Solve : recording frm cassette player to computer or CD?

Answer»

I am trying to RECORD from a cassette player to the computer or to a CD. I have downloaded Audacity and it appears everything is working EXCEPT I do not have an option to record from line-in. I have looked in sound mixer and no line-in option shows as active or disabled.

I can't find the driver at the CREATIVE Labs website to download a newer version. Can you tell me if I need to buy a NEW sound card or which driver I should download to give me a line-in option for recording?

I have included below what little I know about the computer specs etc. I am a complete novice and I am deathly afraid I will try to install a wrong item and trash my computer.

All ideas greatly appreciated!!!

My sound driver is Audigy SB 6.0.1.1304 installed 10/25/07. My computer is an old Gateway (approximately 2004).

Can you post the exact model of your computer? What processor do you have? How much RAM?

I see you're running Windows Vista, even though you have an older computer. Do you have a port on back of your computer labeled "line-in"? Are the various sound ports, or jacks, color coded? If so, what color is the one for line-in?I think this is the information you asked for:
Memory: 1024 M Bytes
Processor: Intel PENTIUM 4
Model: D850EMV2 AAA87987-603
Bios: MV85010A.15A.0075.P13.0209191141 (09/19/02)

I'm not sure about the model number of the computer. I think it is Gateway E-6100. Can you tell me where to find that information?

Thank you SO MUCH for the response. I really want to resolve this issue and I am loving the learning process.I see the Gateway E-6100 has 5 PCI slots. So, you have plenty of room for expansion with add-on cards. I'm inclined to think installing a new sound card may be the best solution in this case. Here's an inexpensive card that might just do the trick: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829126004 , from U.S. supplier newegg.com.

I have done more research and it appears the Model # is Model: Gateway 700 RETAIL
Serial #: 0029012155Edit
Ship Date: December 2002
Warranty Info: EXPIRED

Will the sound card you recommended be something I can install myself? I am not afraid of a screw driver, but I am really a rank beginner with this stuff and have never looked inside the tower.

Again, I send tons of gratitude! You can use the Mic jack to record into. "Mic" is just a higher amplified "Line-in" You'll have to adjust the volume way down and tinker with it some.

If you double click the speaker in the taskbar you can check if your "Line-in" is muted. If its not there select Options--> Properties.

In the Properties window select Recording and then select the appropriate recording devices you want to be available.

[attachment deleted by admin]I used the mic jack as well, and tinkered with the quality in audacity. It came out pretty well. Just wanted to say it works Glad to hear it!
