Solve : reinstalled windows xp now no sound?

Answer»

i had to reinstall windows xp and "rebuild" EVERYTHING which has been a pain. now i have no sound, windows media player tells me that i do not have a sound device, i look in device manager and there is a yellow ! NEXT to "audio device on high definition audio bus" and "SM bus controller". i have loaded all drivers from the dell cd and ran windows update several times to no avail. any ideas on how to SOLVE what i imagine is a simple fix?

You need to install the chipset driver from Dell how does that happen?ALLAN,

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I did a Google search on "install chip from Dell" and found this website:

http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19?c=us&s=dhs&cs=19&l=en

this enabled me to identify the "missing" components and/or drivers and then download them. after a lengthy install everything works as it did before.

many thanks,You're welcome.i had to reinstall windows xp and "rebuild" everything which has been a pain. now i have no sound, windows media player tells me that i do not have a sound device, i look in device manager and there is a yellow ! next to "audio device on high definition audio bus" and "sm bus controller". As was stated above to the OP you need to DLoad and install your Chipset drivers from the MBoard manuf. site...chipset drivers 1st...re-boot...then all additional drivers.
