Solve : Renaming folders (serially); Frustration with available programs? |
Answer» Salmon Trout Salmon Trout No, you can select multiple folders in Explorer or in search results and RIGHT click one or all of them them and then select Better File Rename if you have allowed that program to add its entry to the context menu. The normal procedure of clicking on then first, holding down SHIFT and clicking the last to select a whole group did NOT work.Quote from: Sebastian42 on April 26, 2010, 12:04:29 PM The normal procedure of clicking on then first, holding down SHIFT and clicking the last to select a whole group did NOT work. You cannot do this in Windows Explorer? I do not understand your "did NOT work". This is a bad way to describe a problem on a forum. Please SAY exactly what happened. Otherwise we may think the problem is you. 1. Click first folder, then shift-click last folder 2. Right click ensemble of folders, choose Better File Rename 3. or control-click desired folders 4. Right click one of these folders, choose Better File Rename Quote from: Salmon Trout on April 26, 2010, 12:30:26 PM You cannot do this in Windows Explorer? In Windows Explorer I CAN do it. I was trying to select the folders (for renaming) in Better File Renamer, THAT is where the group from the first to the last folder selected did not become selected/highlit when I held SHIFT down. Did you try CTRL+down ?I did not try CTRL down, because that normally adds only one ITEM at a time. I'm trying to get AWAY from doing it 'manually'. BULK renaming is the aim.Quote from: Sebastian42 on April 27, 2010, 09:11:27 AM I did not try CTRL down, because that normally adds only one item at a time. have you BEEN unable to use WINDOWS explorer to SELECT a group of FOLDERS and then right click THEM and use the better file rename option AS suggested by Salmon Trout?I have not tried to work from both Explorer AND Better File Renamer. I have tried to select the folders in Better File Renamer. It sounds WEIRD, but if it works ..... I better have another try.Quote from: Sebastian42 on April 27, 2010, 09:57:31 AM I have not tried to work from both Explorer AND Better File Renamer. The idea is, you select them first, in Explorer, then you send them to Better File Rename by right click/context menu. What's so hard about that? It doesn't sound hard at all, it just never occured to me to use Explorer AS WELL as the renaming program. Quote from: Sebastian42 on April 28, 2010, 04:48:23 AM It doesn't sound hard at all, it just never occured to me to use Explorer AS WELL as the renaming program. Many, many programs which perform operations on files work this way, either by default or as an option. Why bother re-inventing the wheel when Windows already has a (reasonably) good file/folder selection program? Why indeed ? By next week I should have been able to try it out, and will report back. Indeed, I was able to select a group of folders and in their context menu find 'Better File Renamer'. That makes this software suitable; and maybe the same applies to programs I tried before I first posted my question. Thank you. |
