Solve : Saving photos to DVD?

Answer»

In conversation with a friend the other day, the idea of saving his digital pictures to DVD came up. Having no experience with this, I thought I'd ask here.

He has accumulated quite a few pictures. Not professional.... just family stuff.

It would be nice to burn them to DVD, such that they would be able to be viewed without a computer, from any typical DVD player. Slideshow maybe? or flip through them using the remote somehow? .... again, I have no experience with this.

I'm thinking that accomplishing this should not be a big deal.

Is there freeware out there that will do the job? Any recommendations?
(I'm googling a bit, and finding a lot of commercial software that says it will do it. And it also looks to have a lot of EXTRA features/options)

Hopefully there are some out there with experience with this. All advice and comments welcomed.

Thanks.

p.s. He has WinXP.

My 2 first stops for things like this are usually majorgeeks...multimedia Section and sourceforge...same category.
Don't do much picture album work but i bet they've got some fine Free tools for it...Many DVD players today supports displaying images without you having to do anything to them. I.e. just burn them to a disc and the DVD player will be able to display them.
If the DVD player doesn't support pictures (if it's an older player for example) I believe the pictures will have to be converted to MPEG-2 video. This will seriously degrade the quality of most pictures, since they will be downsized to standard DVD resolution. (720×480 NTSC or 720×576 PAL).
While the pictures would look good on any SD TV they wouldn't on a computer screen or HD TV.
So your friend may want to consider how compatible he wants this picture disc to be.You might want to spice the photo's up a bit in a slide show with transitions, and sounds into a video type display. Perhaps start with windows movie maker. Some other programs, including online can be found here at Digital Inspiration...Quote from: patio on April 10, 2008, 01:27:03 PM

Tried MajorGeeks. Saw one description that sounded like it was the right THING, but it was $19.99.

Sourceforge... I never can find my way around there. I just gave it a shot, and didn't find anything,... but that doesn't mean that it is not there.

Lost me a bit with the last sentence.

Why would compatibility be a concern? Maybe if this were to be his only copy? is that it?

I think what he wants to be able to do, is to easily pick out the pictures he wants - kids, family stuff, etc. - save them to idiot-proof DVD, and give the DVD to Grandma. She can put it in her DVD player and flip through the pics.
No computer, and super simple and easy to view.

As far as saving his pictures for himself, I suppose he is just going to burn them all to CD or DVD as data files.

Maybe later.
I think for this situation, it is best to start with a minimum of bells and whistles.

I do think that a recorded audio commentary would be very nice.... if possible. But that would be after the first steps are mastered.

I saw Windows Movie Maker mentioned at the link that you gave me above.
And I remember seeing it mentioned elsewhere too.
Thanks.
I'm going to try to find more to read about on that.

Are you familiar with Windows Movie Maker? Finally - just today, I got to play with this WinXP computer, albeit very briefly.

I may not have a good grasp on the way things are, but as I see it - to summarize:

We'll be able to use Windows Movie Maker to create a 'project'. CHOOSE the pics, put them in order, etc.

But.... we need something to burn the saved project to DVD, as a video DVD.
So far, all I've found - freeware WISE - to burn DVDs will burn only data DVDs.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

No ideas at all? .... anybody??

Have you got Windows DVD maker? It was pre-installed in mine but its Windows Vista so i'm not sure.

I use that all the time. Its very simple to use and find your way around it.Check out Microsoft PhotoStory. I says it supports burning dvds now.
