Answer» I have a HP all in one printer that is attached to my main computer and I have been sharing it on my laptop. Both have WinXP Home. The printer was working on both computers fine until last week and it quit working on the SHARED laptop. I get the following errors:"Printing failed when starting the DOCUMENT". And when I try to GO to the printer properties I get the following "printer properties cannot be DISPLAYED. the print spooler service is not running". The printer is working fine on my main machine. I had zone alarm firewall and changed to PC Tools Firewall, I don't know if this had anything to do with it or not. Thanks What version of PC Tools Firewall are you using???
If you're using their new Free version...you may have issues with it...
If its Firewall Plus Version 2.0 for Windows, the only support being given for this product is a support forum:
http://www.pctools.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=30
Since the software is relatively new and free...I wouldn't recommend it until they work out all the bugs.
I'm an avid user of PC Tools products and sell, as well as recommend them on my site. However, this product is really too new for me to endorse.
You might want to go back to Zone Alarm....
May I ask why you changed? Did "Free" have anything to do with your decision?I am like you, I like PC software. The firewall works great, this is the only issue that I have had so far. The version I am using is 2.0.0.12.
I can dis-able firewalls in both computers and the shared printer will work from both computers, Turn it on, the laptop stops working. I don't know if it has anything to do with the ip address or not. Could sure use some help. Thanks for your response. You need to configure the firewall on the main computer to allow access from other computers on the network...otherwise, the other computers will not have access to the printer connected to the main computer on the network.
Check your firewall settings on the main computer and adjust it to allow network connections.Specifically, you need to allow LAN connections to PORTS 137-139 and 1512.Inserted the IP Address of my laptop into the main computer firewall, Works great. Thanks to all for your help. You're welcome...
Glad it's working for ya...
