Solve : So many tools;so little time : )?

Answer»

I use a firewall, Malware Bytes & medium security settings. i'm sure I need more security, but there's so many tools that do so much, it's CONFUSING. should I use Windows defender & also Ad-Aware , SpyBot search & destroy, etc? Which are really essential ? Help, please ?
BTW : I love this website !You should NOT use Defender, AdAware or Spybot.

A good anti virus app (which you haven't mentioned) plus MANUAL scans with either MalwareBytes or Super AntiSpyware are fine. I also use SpywareBlaster for passive protection. My current protection package:

The Anti-Virus app of your CHOICE...mine right now is MSE
MalwareBytes Anti-Malware.
SuperAnti-Spyware.
Stinger (on demand Trojan scanner)
WinPatrol (notifies you of any apps attempting to make changes to the PC)

I've ran this for approx. 4 years now with zero issues on a PC that's on 24/7 and gets heavy net usage...

BTW all the above is Free.Quote from: sherry! on April 05, 2013, 02:30:42 PM

Would be helpful to KNOW what version of Windows you have. In Windows 8, Windows Defender is an antivirus program; this is not the case for previous versions of Windows. I have no opinion on it, I'm just stating a fact about it. Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Defender
I have Windows 7. I don't have really heavy usage on my pc, & I shut down the power when i'm done for the day.

Something else I wonder about : I get notifications about Apple software updates. I don't know anything about that. Can I disable/delete this? I asked my ISP about Stinger and WinPatrol; they nixed both as being 'ineffective'.
They recommended Norton ( which they sell, of course). This has happened b-4 when I asked them about one-program-or-another.
I don't quite get it ; how do we know what to do about various protection programs with different opinions out there ? This may be a 'niggling' problem to experts, but leaves some of us guessing. You can be sure your ISP gets some financial benefit from selling Norton, so don't expect to get an UNBIASED opinion from them. However, I believe Norton is OK; I've been using a trial version that came with my fairly new laptop, with Windows 8. Primarily, I'd emphasize the first three items recommended by patio:

The Anti-Virus app of your choice...mine right now is MSE
MalwareBytes Anti-Malware.
SuperAnti-Spyware.

My Anti-Virus app choice now is avast! Free Antivirus. It's what I've been using for quite on my Windows 7 desktop system and I'll probably install it on my laptop when the Norton trial expires. But, there are numerous good choices, so feel free to continue the discussion if you like. I'm not suprised at all your ISP would say that about 2 fine products...
Doesn't mean you have to listen to them...or not.
