OpenOffice.org is the probably the best known freeware alternative to MS Office; it's a full-featured office suite with word processing, spreadsheet, etc. If you merely wanted a basic word processor, you could get AbiWord. But since you mentioned word processing and spreadsheet, you might as well get OpenOffice.org and use it's word processor.
