i got this problem many times even after reinstalling OS 2 timesWhy are you trying to install standard VGA driver, not your video card driver?
I'm confused here...what is happening? You have video problems, Device Manager errors...?Quote from: Broni on April 27, 2008, 03:29:04 PM

It's something to do with the ATI drivers and this is a very common problem. Some ATI drivers will not install if there is an older ATI driver installed.

To the original poster, give me a little bit and I'll prepare some steps for you.First, go to ATI's website and download the LATEST Catalyst driver for your machine.

Go into Add/Remove PROGRAMS and remove anything "ATI". Go into the Device Manager (right click My Computer, click properties, click Hardware tab, click Device Manager) and look under "Display Adaptors". Delete any ATI hardware listed there. Restart your computer.

After the restart, Windows may detect your video card again and attempt to install a driver for it, cancel this. Install the ATI Catalyst driver you downloaded.i did everything . even i use the driver cleaner in safe mode (disabling antivirus) with cab clear. after that i reinstall the OS . after that how can an old driver be in the system as all REGISTRY settings are new. even after this the display driver adaptor say such error message. in device manager a yellow ? mark device is there (VGA controller) when i uninstall it and reboot system says new hardware found and trying to search the driver but failed . so what can i do further?Formatting the drive was a bit drastic and unnecessary. But now that you've done that, repeat the same procedure as before (remove all ATI software from Add/Remove Programs, remove from Device Manager, etc.) and then download and run the Catalyst removal tool from http://support.ati.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=1447.

After that, restart and try to reinstall the driver.i tried with the catalyst uninstall utility before posting in this forum. should i install the original driver supplied in a CD while purchasing the notebook?Try all of the steps again AND that tool. The tool alone or just uninstall doesn't always work. They need to be done together.
