Answer» Hey guys, any gamers out there will have noticed that more and more games run on Steam. Other than what comes out of my kettle, what the heck is "steam"?http://store.steampowered.com/ One of Valve's brilliant ideas . For downloading games, digital rights management (copy protection), and multiplayer stuff. Not that I'm against copy protection or anything, but a lot of people have issues with Steam. Personally, I've only ever had one issue, which I have yet to rectify, but that's another story. (Of course, I only own one Steam game. Refuse to get another at this point.) Nyir, 1. Exactly what games are you having issues with? Is it ALL Steam games? Certain ones? Please provide a complete list of what Steam games you have, which ones install ok, and which ones fail. 2. Are you trying to install the games over their old, existing directories? If you are, don't. Back up any save files you want and delete the old installations. Trying to install any game over an old installation will often RESULT in errors overwriting certain files or a failed installation. 3. Have you completely deleted, rebooted, then reinstalled Steam? 4. Is ANY other non-Steam game or program giving issues at all?Alright, as it stands, I intend to re install Dawn of War II and Empire: Total Wars. As for installing over the old directories, I'm not sure, though that would probably make sense if that is the problem since the restore didn't work properly. I recently deleted steam because it was driving me insane (wasn't letting the system shut down properly), so I'll try installing it again. It seems that only the Steam games are having problems. Installed several other non-steam games without any trouble. Quote from: Nyir on July 14, 2009, 03:17:56 AM Alright, as it stands, I intend to re install Dawn of War II and Empire: Total Wars. Yeah, I had the same problem with Steam on my XP system, wouldn't shutdown properly as long as Steam was running. Never bothered finding a solution, since Steam won't let me play Dawn of War II because it says my cd-key is already registered to someone else. I find that interesting since I got the game brand new directly from the distributor. Long story, not relevant. Like I said, try completely removing Steam and any games associated with it. Completely remove any directories/files associated with either. If you're comfortable enough, check for and remove any registry entries pertaining to Steam or Steam powered games. Reboot, then try again. Steam is horrible. It's got to be one of the worst things I've ever seen a game COMPANY do. I thought SecuROM was annoying, but Steam definitely takes the cake.Hahaha, yeah, steam is rather irritating. Thanks for all your help, it has been greatly appreciated. |
