Solve : System Restore help?

Answer»

I'm have a laptop running on windows XP SP2. I am able to CREATE a restore point, but when I try to restore the system to that or any other system created restore points, it does not restore. It gives a message saying it cannot restore to the date/time requested and that CHOSE another restore point.

I ROLLED back the system to the factory default and tried creating a new restore point, still it refuses to do so. Any ideas please ??Have you tried to restore in safe mode?

Do you have Norton ANTIVIRUS or any Symantec programs installed on your computer? If so, you will have to turn off protection for norton products for system restore to work.hey guys,

Thanks for the help. The restoration in safe mode helped ... cheers!
Anyways, I dont have Norton running, but thanks for the SUGGESTION though.I have manually created two restore points (restore1 & restore2) on a laptop with win xp sp3. I would like to turn off the System Restore so that windows doesn't create more restore points. I know there is an option to allocate the amount of disk space for Sys Restore.

  • would all the Restore Points be deleted when I turn back Sys Restore On ?
OR
  • turning the Sys Restore off, can I just have my two restore points and use it ?
If you turn system restore off you lose all previous restore points...no matter when they were created. Thanks for the response.
So, what about when the disk quota reaches its maximum allocated space ? I mean, as i have already created my desired restore points(1 and 2), if I reduce the disk quota, would my restore points 1 and 2 be over-written with the automatic restore points created by windows ?When the disk quota reaches its maximum allocated space, the oldest restore point is deleted. So, does that mean I cannot preserve my first restore point in any way ? How would I know how much disk space has already been used for restore points out of the maximum allocation of 2.8gb (which is for win XP) ? ... so that i might restore the system to the best restore point before its deleted. Or can i delete the unwanted restore points so as to keep/preserve only the desired ones ?

I would appreciate your response. No, you can't delete single restore point, because they're tied up to each other.
Turn System restore on/off will delete all restore points.
Using Disk Cleanup, you can remove all restore points, but the last one.

To check how much space is already used, open command prompt, and run:
vssadmin list shadowstorage
