Answer» I've recently taken my old hard drive out of my dead laptop and put it in an enclosure, it works fine except that I cant use the files because apparently I dont own them. I've done all the things that I think I should, properties>SECURITY>ADVANCED>owner>changed it to my new user name>ticked the LITTLE box about OWNERS on subfolders THEN come out and go back to PERMISSIONS>change permissions> add 'EVERYONE' and then my user name and tick the little box about inheriting subfolders and such like
AND THE SWEET FA happens, I have a load of new names in the settings but I still cant access anything due to not having permission!
Any help much appreciated. Good evening middle92 and welcome to CH
Did you try taking ownership of them? and once you take ownership you do have to close out the boxes and then re-open to see if your changes took affect

PS also this link may help you http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421Take owner ship by right clicking and using the take ownership shortcut doesnt work. I've tried those methods described.
Im not sure if this is important but my old laptop was XP and my new one is windows 7 (and I hate it)
