Solve : trouble reinstalling windows?

Answer»

My PC has been shutting itself off at random for a while now, mostly when running programs/games. I decided to reinstall windows in an attempt to rid the problem but the PC keeps shutting down during the reinstall.
How can I stop this from happening, even if just 'til the installation finishes?

and does anyone have any good reasons as to why this might be happening? I've heard dust and fan issues might be responsible but I see no problem with either - I cleared the dust a few weeks ago and there wasn't that much there anyway. What OS do you have? you say windows but there are a few OS's of windows.
What protection did you have?
How did you uninstall the OS?By using an appropriate program that says Format C:?
Are you still able to boot?
Let me know

Jonas Oh sorry, forgot the specs.

Windows XP home edition
version 2002 service pack 2

Fujitsu Siemens intel (R)
Pentium (R) 4CPU 3.06 GhZ
960 mb rams.

you mean like virus detectors?

Windows firewall
Spy bot Search and destroy
Add Aware
AVG free
Spy ware blaster
Spy ware doctor
Norton

I run checks regularly.

How did you uninstall the OS?

I just put in the Windows XP CD and clicked install. After a few points a message said this new install would wipe the previous install. When I clicked to continue a message on the side said the installation would take 58 mins, then the PC restarted taking me to a dos like screen where I was given the choice to repair or fully install. I tried both of them but both crashed the cpu shortly in. Sorry if that doesn't help. Nothing has been wiped BTW.

don't know what that is exactly, I just did it like above. I thought all you had to do is stick in the CD and reinstall, simple.
BTW the cpu has been shutting down long before now, it has nothing to do with my attempt to wipe the PC - apart from it being the reason I'm doing it. I get the feeling the same thing will happen no matter what method I use.

Are you still able to boot?
yup, but when my CPU does switch off on its own I'm unable to switch it back on straight away. It just freezes at the start up screen. I usually have to leave it alone for a while before it works right again.

Edit: just downloaded a program called SpeedFan and it has my temp around 54-56C. Is that good or bad?For the temperature: I do not know much about that but it is the exact same of my laptop and I don't have that kind of problem so.

Did you scan your computer for any unwanted software?
If I was you I should Dload and run Ccleaner first.
run it on the Issue part.

The way that you are trying to reinstall XP isn't the way how you are suppose to do it.
You are supposed to wipe all data including windows files and apps.
Therefor you 'll need a porg that's able to do that.(I don't know anything about that.)

Before reinstalling try this: (Be sure to have the CD, but that's no porb I guess)
-Start -> run -> type "CHKSDK"
then reboot and
-start -> run -> type "SFC /SCANONCE"
reboot
while you are booting the PC will scan you windows files to see if they are still how they are suppose to be.
(sorry for my bad explanation)

Let me know how it turns out.

just did it. Got lots of issues but they're removed now. Don't know if it's done anything yet.

I'll wait 'til I fix this shut down problem before I go doing that. I'd hate to be stuck with an empty hard drive.

Tried it. It opened a dos box, loaded something in 3 different parts then disappeared. I rebooted and nothing happened from there. Normal?

when I typed that in a minimized dos screen flashed up then vanished. After restarting a loading BAR came up that said it was checking the system for faults. It took about fifteen mins to complete then it just disappeared. And now I'm here.

don't know if any of this has done anything.

thanks for the help anyway.well the PC shut down while I was watching a movie so I guess it didn't work.

Any other suggestions? The way that the process ran is normal but I had hoped that it would be fixed afterwards.
If the shutdown issue is a software problem that it should be over when you format the drive but that is only IF it is an software problem.
Sow I would wait until you know it for sure.
For as far as I can tell I think it is a hardware problem. (But I do not know much about hardware so...)
I'm out of suggestions sorry.
Just hang around till someone else knows an answer.

Jonas maybe I should try third times the charm in the hardware section.

Oh, and since I attempted to reinstall windows (my way) I keep on getting a choice during startup to either enter windows setup or start up normally. If I don't do anything it goes into windows setup (in dos) automatically. How do I stop this? It happens without the Windows CD being in the drive.

I've also noticed my drivers (not really sure which - something to do with graphics I assume seeing as it happens when I try play games - it's the Fujitsu driver CD that came with the cpu anyway) have stopped working (since the above attempt too) so I figured I'd just reinstall them from the disc, but before I could start I received an error message telling me to remove ATI catalyst control center first. I gave it a shot and during the uninstall an error message popped up saying I have 1 min before the PC shuts down, and so it did. It might just be a safety thing activated by the comp but it reminded me of that old MSblast virus.

thanks again

Did you already tried System restore?
Start -> All programs -> Accessories -> system tools -> system restore
Go to a restoring point just before you tried reinstalling Windows
about that possibility of a virus you might try Windows OneCare Live it has a 90 day trial so that won't be any problem to scan. (As far as I have tried protection this came out the best)
Good luck

Jonas Remove the side, first make sure all the fans are running then direct a desk fan at the computer and see how it goes.Quote

that worked. Thanks.

I can't get that thing to work. I keep getting this message: network problems are preventing windows live one-care installation from continuing at this time. PLEASE check your network connection and try again.

I'll try this later. As I said, I already opened the PC a while ago and didn't find anything strange. But it couldn't hurt to try again. Although I don't have a desk fan so I'll have to make do with something else.

thankssorry about the double post but I did a log scan with Hijack this just to RULE out any software problems.
