Solve : Windows 10 loaded but still boots as Windows 7? |
|
Answer» I finally got my system to Multi-Boot and loaded the Win10 and it's Key codes without any errors reporting. However, the 10 page document that MS provide with the MS USB that I've read twice talks about loading an MS Tool to get new tools on my system. As that hasn't happened this may now be my problem, for some reason I did not see anything linking to Microsoft while their USB was doing it's update. Anyone who's gone through a similar problem installing Windows 10 please let me know. Be sure you have backups of your important files before doing this. You shouldn’t lose your files if you follow this PROCESS, but a mistake or bug could cause you to lose them. Better safe than sorry! He also warns that you have to free up space on your hard drive for a new partition. TAs to Thanks query, you must have bought Win10 already installed. The Win10 USB stick wants to dual boot from it's USB and the hard drive, you have no choice of just choosing one boot system. I can't believe I'm the only fool in Toronto who bought the Win10 software to install it themselves. Maybe it was bought by all experts or smarter people than me. Or, maybe their computer works better than my 6 year old HP Laptop. I'm now waiting for a Refurbished Desktop computer that comes with Win10 Installed to replace my 7 year old Win XP that has a faulty CD drive among other problems. The mayor problem with both computers is the Browsers don't support the systems any more and installing new versions of browsers always fails on these old computers. As to Geek, thanks for the link address. You are a wealth of knowledge. I've already saved all my important files. I know you are getting another computer. I will still explain what I think the problem is. One of the things which makes this difficult is the way in which Windows expects the hard drive to be partitioned. So you need to install Windows 10 first leaving space on the drive to load Windows 7. There is a way to do this without loosing your Windows 7 as it is installed and setup now. Also you could have backed up your Windows 7 drive. Loaded Windows 10 using the Windows 7 licence key as an upgrade and then restored the Windows 7 to a PARTITION on the drive. Then the Windows 10 would boot and offer to start windows 10 or 7. I would have brought say a 500 GB SSD drive setup Windows 10 on the drive using the method above making sure windows 10 was installed at the end of the drive say the last 180 gb leave 20 gb free after the partition. Then restore or copy the old Windows 7 drive to the 250 gb free area between the 100MB boot partition at the beginning of the drive and the 180 gb windows 10 drive. Keep the old drive as a backup of Windows 7. Like most things it is very easy if you have the software like Easues partition manager or Paragon disk manager. Lisa, your how to solution is beyond my rookie computer knowledge and what you would do is expensive just to install an upgrade to my Laptop with Win10. I'm not going to buy a hard drive just to install Win10, and you can't just plug that hard drive into a a laptop. I bought a 64 GB USB to save all my important data and backed up the MS USB stick onto it. I have to give up this installation and I'll pay the store another $40 + tax. Thanks for the reply anyway. Gable. This reply is for Geek. I went to your link for How to dual boot for Win7 and it took me over 2 hours to get through reading the documentation because every time I moved my cursor off the scroll bar I got a black screen the I couldn't get out of or delete. This black screen was for "How to Geek The Best Tech Newsletter Anywhere" which I didn't want to do. This ended up my having to log back into your link again to continue scrolling the document at 6 or more times. Someone at Geek should fix that black screen so you can exit it without subscribing, it's a real pain in the *censored*. I also couldn't get out of so many black screens in my IE browser that I had to reboot my PC. In conclusion, after scrolling most of your document and seeing everything you need to do, to link to, to download, to do this and that, I have decided I couldn't do all that and not go insane. I'm going to gladly pay the $40 + HST to the store that sold me the Win10 software and Microsoft should go back to providing a CD to install their O.S. Have great day everyone, I need one for a change. Gable. Good choice. That #40 will be money well spent if it helps you keep your sanity. I fixed my Font size and scrolling problem reucing it from 24 to 10 font size. My major problem now is it won't connect to my older USB modem now or my new USB modem which is only 1 month old. I also cant't Chat to Microsoft. I tried everything and kept getting Not connected to any networks and saw that a dozen times. I tried Wi-Fi connection and it wanted ISP info that I couldn't provide before failing. I tried Dial-up and it wants User name, Password and stuff the ISP never gave me but it claims they did. I tried changing Firewall protections changes, but taht failed, some I reset them to defaults. I also can't get their online Help info because it can't connect to the internet.I'm not going to go out and buy another mobile modem, that would be ridiculous. I've wasted about 3 hours trying everything to get an Internet connection. If anyone has gone through these problems witrh Windows 10 or has some usefull suggestions I would like to hear from you. I'm stumped now and it seems like my previous Windows 7 wasn't so bad after all, except I never had a backup, Unles the Windows 10 did a back-up I don't know about. Thanks, Gaable. I just had an idea but can't seem to implement it myself in Windows 10 with no internet connections. I downloaded Google Chrome on my Desktop computer that runs Windows XP but it didn't give me a choice as to where to put the download. I've tried to copy chrome using my XP to my USB, but that failed. I've tried to copy Chrome using my XP from the Internet to one of my USB drives so I could load it into Windows 10. But that failed to get to my USB. Anyone have any ideas as to how to get Chrome loaded to my Windows 10 Laptop when I have no communications please let me know. Thanks, Gable. Hi Gable. When you install chrome onto a computer there is a small program which is loaded first, then the main program downloads. Even if you install the first part onto Windows 10 you need an internet connection to complete the install. You said on 07 December 2019 Quote from: Gable on December 07, 2019, 08:37:42 PM
Please give more detail about the USB modem. If it is a 4g cellphone modem it doesn't need any password or user loaded it uses the cellphone card for the details. The modem if supported by Windows 10 will load the software you need to use it. I think from your experience with windows before 10 you are expecting to need to do steps to get things working. With windows 10 there is still some steps just different ones. Like it is possible the modem uses usb for power supply and setup and the network is wireless so not thru the usb cable. Lisa_Marie, I don't know the size of my old USB modem but it doesn't connect to the internet and fails with no Internet connection the same happens to my new USB Waiwei modem. I spent the afternoon on Windows 10 again and tried to copy Chrome, Netscape and internet Explorer from one of my USB's but couldn't load anything into Windows 10. That USB usually lights up when it's connected but it didn't and I tried everything in Windows 10 to get it to recognize the USB. As usual nothing worked. If only I had the fore-site to save all my browsers before I installed Windows 10. Thanks for the reply Gable. If the USB isn't supplying power to any device even pen drives then you have a problem with the usb ports in the Laptop. can you plug the USB Haiwei modem into a usb charger close to your Laptop. Check if you have a power light and a 4 g lite which could take a few minutes to connect. When these are on then the modem is ready to except Wireless connections. I'm having to assume this as I don't know what Haiwei modem you have, like the model number would really help. Also if you can remove the main battery and disconnect the power supply for a few minutes to the laptop this could reset the USB power supply and get USB devices to work. Is this your original windows 7 laptop upgraded to 10 if so if you press the windows key and x key and then select device manager is there any devices with exclamation marks if so what devices are they. I had the same problem with Wndows 10 still loading as Windows 7. The Installation did not get completed because first you set your set your boot up Esc, F1, to duel-boot your O.S. Go to advanced section and change Disabled to Enabled, save and exit the boot. You will need a USB stick with 10 GB or more of free space on it so your Windows 10 USB stick can be saved to it along with important files and other stuff. Your Install didn't complete that's why your seeing Windows 7 at boot-up. Backup your Windows USB stick and maybe a Google Chrome browser and any important files you want saved. Then reboot. Put your Windows USB stick back in and start it again in whatever computer port it's in. If system wants to upgrade your Windows stick, say NO. That saves hours of your time and if you run into obsolete virus CHECKERS don't update them, delete them and save another hour. When the Windows 10 completes you have to leave it turned on while Windows checks and verifies everything it can, which causes several system re-boots that takes at least another hour. I spent over 9 hours making all the wrong choices. Good Luck, Gable. |
