Solve : Windows ME does not recognize MP3 player?

Answer»

I have a Dell dimension 4100 pentium III 933  With Windows ME.  I have a portable MP3 player S-320 that it will not recognize. I bought it about a year ago and had the same problem then. I found the solution then at the microsoft troubleshooting website, but the solution is no longer there, and I'm having the problem again. Shame on me for not writing it down. Didn't think I would need it again. It had something to do with removing part of a command. It was very simple.....*censored*. I believe a year ago it gave an error MESSAGE    usbntmap.sys was not found     I believe the file is there but the command line needs that change as I said earlier.......any ideas ?     When I plug the MP3 player in the mouse pointer just goes on and off the screen very QUICKLY, if you are not looking at it you would MISS it. Then nothing happens, computer functions normally.

Thanks if you can help.....capecodjgAnd what make/model is the mystery MP3 player? Little details like that can be helpful.....its a S-320 ,, isnt that what he saidWell, he did say that, but he did not say who the manufacturer was. I did a GOOGLE on S320 and it's not a Sony Clie, and it's not a Mercedes, ......

Thanks anyway for your comment.Believe it or not I cannot find the name on the MP3 device anywhere, I even opened it up. The driver cd that was included has some install files on it that are titled MSI, I thought maybe that was the name of the manufacturer.
Thanks for your help ....MSI makes motherboards, but I bet those files refer to Microsoft Installer. Are there any text files on that install CD that would help determine this?Install drivers for the MP3 player.I really hope it's not so easy as he did not even install the drivers and software and expected it to work. You never know, but we'll see...If .DLL files start missing, it's time for drivers.I of course installed the driver that came with the MP3 player. This is not the kind of help I need. I checked the CD for content and there are no text files. The files are:    MSI, cabinet file       MSIcn, Windows installerpackage     MSIen, Windows Installer package       MSItw, Windows installer package

Talk to me about the last message and  .DLL files

If I cannot determine what the manufacturer of this device is......is it HOPELESS to continue ? Quote

I don't know that it is hopeless, but it would be helpful to know that or the method you got it to work in the past.

You might try to boot with a Linux  Live CD and see if it can be recognized and try to identify it that way. knoppix is a good one for that. No danger toi your mamchine as it writes nothing to the hard drive. I will continue thinking about it.  (This probably is not a high dollar item as it has no manufacturer proudly listed.)
