Solve : Windows Media Player starting on its own!?

Answer»

I was wondering if anyone could help me at all. Windows Media player keeps on STARTING without any prompting. This can happen at any time, whether or not I've used Media player this session, and regardless whether I am currently on the internet or not. I have scanned for viruses and adware and nothing shows. Is there anyway I can find out what program is starting it up, or even better, stop it completely?

If anyone could help at all I would be very appreciative.Does it randomly start or at Windows start-up? What scanners have you used?

Did you download the latest version of Windows Media Player? (10)It starts completely randomly, and I don't think its ever happened immediately at Windows startup. I have eTrust EZ Antivirus as the one on my system, and have also performed online scanes with Trend Micro and RAV. I have also scanned with Lavasoft Ad-Aware. I've downloaded Media Player 10 (as well as the last few windows updates) and it STILL happens. Sometimes it can go hours without happening and sometimes it will start up, I'll close it, and it will start again. It doesn't load any particular file when it starts either. Makes me think another program is causing it to load using the pathname, but I don't know how to check if this is happening.

Thanks. What if you uninstall Windows Media Player and then reinstall it?if you are using adsl cable check your settings>http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=260023I've tried setting my settings in Media Player to various things, and it still happens. I would try uninstalling it but I don't know how. I can't find an uninstall program and Media Player isn't listed in the add/remove programs list.I could not find any related information on http://www.microsoft.com

But Google found this forum message that has got three good points.

There are possible conclusion here:

1: Autoupdate is checking to see if you can update your windows media version

2: you've some how assigned a file extension to windows media player which is being used by those programs that trigger it.

3: if your using IE5 or IE5.5 you might have fallen foul of an exploit that was about round that time with olderversions of Media player that could trigger code through executing as if it was a remote URL to a file.

There should be relevant information on this areas through the USE of a search engine like google, or if anyone else would like to add to these or other possibilities.

1) I think Media Player's autoupdate is another program, which doesn't need it to run but I'm not sure. How do I stop it doing this anyway, other than blocking it via my firewall?

2) I've told Media Player not to open any file at all and yet it still happens.

3) I'm using IE6 but I have PROBABLY used 5.5 previously, so the exploit may have got through. Any ideas on how to stop it?

Additionally there are three programs listed by my firewall as being related to Media Player, all in the same directory. They are setup_WM.exe, wmsetsdk.exe and wmplayer.exe - the first two are listed as "Microsoft Windows Media Configuration Utility" and the latter as "Windows Media Player".

I appreciate all your help and I think I might just uninstall the program - if I can find out how to. Any ideas?Quote

I use Windows Media Player 9 and my Firewall only detects WMplayer.exe and Setup_WM.exe.

The only Google search result for wmsetsdk.exe

C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER\WMSETSDK.EXE

Seems to be native to Windows Media Player 10.

I am quite clueless. Have you tried contacting Microsoft Technical Support? Either by phone or E-mail.. Phone's expensive, E-mail is never replied to. But hey, no pain no gain.Timothy John......If you wish to remove Windows media player....go to control panel .....then click on add/remove programs......when that window opens.....look over on the left side ........"ADD or REMOVE windows COMPONENTS"......click on that ...a list will be generated and scroll down until you see WMP and remove it .

Hope this helps .
