Solve : Would win98 run in nowadays fast CPUs??

Answer»

Hi! I was just wandering... how would win98SE run in latest-tech machines (talk about dual core CPUs)? I mean will it run at all? I always liked win98SE rather than XP or Vista, but never tried it on anything faster than a P3 500mhz...
If it wouldnt work at all... then which would be the fastest hardware on which you could use Win98SE?

Thx in advance...
Well you've certainly piqued my interest although i haven't completed my dual-core build as of yet i've decided that will be the first OS it will see...
The only concern is of course driver issues but my board has yet to arrive.
Will let you know how HARD it crashes the first time...

From everything i've read WIN98 has to be tweaked for it to work but it maxes out at 1G of RAM...haven't seen anything on processor speeds though. I'm not even sure it will take full advantage of dual cores.

As to the OS issue you may want to give Win2k a try or check out a machine it's already installed on...very stable, not quite as many features as XP but a big step up from Win98.Quote from: patio on August 01, 2007, 05:05:57 PM

Somewhere in the depths of my old BRAIN, I'm getting the feeling that this is 512M, not 1G.
But I can't remember enough details to do anything more than toss this out there, and hope it is not too far off the mark. I'm sure you'll check around and find out.

I thought I had some good stuff on it in my bookmarks, and so far have found: http://www.dewassoc.com/support/win98/win9x_512memory.htm
but that is not the one that I was looking for.
If I COME across more sites/pages, I'll POST links.

Edit: some mention of it in this thread.

I wouldn't imagine Win98 supporting dual core, as even XP Home does not.
Not sure about any other issues, but drivers could be a problem with newer hardware, as could support.
As patio suggested, Win2k would be a good choice, it's fairly similar to 98 in look and feel from my point of view but better (again, only my opinion).
