Solve : XP and Vista Printer Driver issues?

Answer»

I've read a bunch of posts on this problem, but none of them are answering my issue, so I apologize if I missed it.

I just bought an HP Pavillion laptop with Vista Home Premium SP1 installed.
I am also running a Compaq Presario laptop with XP Home SP2 installed.

I am running a Lexmark X5270 AIO printer which is attached to my XP laptop via USB with the XP driver installed on the XP MACHINE and has no problems.

I've downloaded the Vista printer driver to the Vista machine and can print from the Vista machine when it's attached to the printer via the USB.

However, I'm trying to set up my Vista computer to print wirelessly to my printer as it's connected to my XP machine. It detects the printer on the XP machine, but it wants to install a different driver. When I SELECT the printer, it says that I must install the driver (of which I already have the Vista version on my Vista computer). When I click to "download driver", it FREEZES until I stop the program.

Can anyone point me in the RIGHT direction to make the printer work wirelessly from my Vista machine through my XP machine? I'm sure it's an easy step I'm missing, I just can't see it! Thanks!Uninstall Vista Driver and instead force XP driver down the Vistas throat....Generally NT drivers are backwards compatible, so Vista may blat about the driver not being signed by MS, allow anyways.

Now you have 2 systems with same driver, so there is no need for translation, there is a passthrough of the print TASK from the spooler service of the one system to the spooler service of the other and it should print without the blat from now on.

I had an issue like this with a Windows 2000 File Server/Print Server and Windows XP and Vista client systems, fix was to force XP and Vista systems to take Windows 2000 Pro drivers for the shared laser printer.

It generally works better when the shared printer is connected to a newer OS than the clients or same. You can generally force it to be same via installation of prior NT printer drivers.

Hope this works for you as it has for me!
