Solution :As we go up and up in earth.s atmosphere, it goes on becoming rarer and more rarer. As a result, the atmospheric layer near the earth.s surface has maximum REFRACTIVE index and the refractive index GRADUALLY DECREASES with increase in height. When light ray from a star enters into earth.s atmosphere, Star star position, Ray path . Refractive index increasing it travels from rarer to denser MEDIUM and hence continues to bend towards the normal. As a result, an observer on earth considers the apparent position of star to be at a higher altitude as shown in FIG. 118.
