James Joyce in his story ‘Eveline’ grapples with many vital aspects of contemporary society. 

The most important of them are as follows:

1. The major focus of “Eveline” is the oppressed status of women in the Irish society as is shown with the protagonist Eveline. After the death of her mother she is forced to take up on a dead end job in the stores, care for her younger siblings and endure the tyrannical authority of her father, To escape there responsibilities and tyranny, she plans to elope with Frank although she changes her mind at the last moment.

2. Eveline is not given the right to choose her husband and her father quarrels with Frank, her boyfriend.

जेम्स ज्वायस की कहानी एवलीन तत्कालीन समाज के बहुत से पहलुओं से संघर्ष करती है। 

उनमें से सर्वाधिक महत्वपूर्ण निम्न है:

1. कहानी ‘‘एवलीन” का मुख्य बिन्दु आइरिश समाज में महिलाओं के शोषण का है, जैसा कि कहानी की नायिका | एवलीन को दिखाया गया है। माँ की मृत्यु के पश्चात उसे स्टोर्स में उन्नति रहित नौकरी करने को मजबूर किया जाता है, साथ में दो छोटे बच्चों की देखभाल की भी जिम्मेदारी उसे दी जाती है और पिता के अत्याचार भी उसे सहन करने पड़ते हैं। इस अत्याचार और जिम्मेदारियों से बचने के लिये वह फ्रैंक के साथ भागने की योजना बनाती है। यद्यपि अंतिम क्षण में वह अपना मन बदल लेती है।
2. एलीवन को अपना पति चुनने का अधिकार नहीं दिया जाता है तथा उसका पिता फ्रैंक से झगड़ा करता है।
