What is meant by the apparent size of an object ? With a neat and labelled diagram, explain the relation between the apparent sizeof an object and the angle subtended by the object at the eye.

Answer»

Solution :An object appears SMALL or big depending UPON the size of its image formed on the RETINA of the eye. The size of an object as perceived by the eye is called the APPARENT size of an object . Consider two object of the same size, one held enar the eye and the other away from the eye as shown in the following figure . THe nerarby object (PQ) appears larger than the distant object `(P_(1)Q_(1))`

distant object at the eye. This shows that the apparent size of an object depends upon the able subtended by the object at the eye. The greater the angle subtended by the object at the eye, the greater is the apparent size of the object. Similarly, the SMALLER the angle subtended by the object at the eye, the smaller is the apparent size of the object.
