The movement marked the transition of Indian nationalism from a middle-class to a mass basis. Gandhiji called off the non cooperation movement due to chauri chaura incident where 22 police men were killed. The movement was turning into violence in many places and he felt that the satyagrahis should be properly trained before the movement and the movement should unfold into stages.
