Why does the author describe Ali as \'a pitiable figure a century behind his time? |
| Answer» The pitiable figure being referred to here is Coachman Ali. He is looking pitiable because of his miserable condition. He was looking quite old; he wore tattered clothes. The disappointment of not receiving any letter from his beloved but separated daughter further depressed him. His life seemed to have stop evolving after his daughter, Miriam had run away with a soldier from Punjab. He looked a century behind his time because after Miriam’s sudden separation, he had stopped looking after himself properly. | |
