Of the total population, 59% spoke Dutch and lived in the Flemish region, 40% spoke French and lived in the Wallonia region, 1% spoke German. The population in Brussels, however, consisted of 80% French speaking and 20% Dutch speaking people. The ethnic composition in Srilanka is diverse. Of the total population, 74% spoke Sinhala and most of them followed Buddhism, 18% spoke Tamil of which 13% were Srilankan Tamils. Most of the Tamils followed Hinduism or Islam. About 7% people followed Christianity an belonged to both Sinhala and Tamil speaking communities.
