Solve : video care?

Answer»

I have a mac PRO 3.1 8 core with a ATI Radeon HD 2600 Graphics card.  After time the card shuts down my computer.  I took the side cabinet off and put a small personal fan by the card. I believe the built in fan is not doing the job. Can the fan be the PROBLEM ? could the components have been compromised and replacing the fan will not solve the problem.Does the system no LONGER shut down with fan added? If so then it was an overheat condition.

It is possible for a GPU fan to fail and run slower or not at all and cause an overheat. Hopefully the overheat condition didnt do permanent damage to GPU. You WOULD know you have permanent damage if portions of the display show artifacts, lines, voids, or no IMAGE etc.

Solve : Giving Dictionary permanent permission to open?

Answer»

Hi,

I'm on SIERRA 10.12.3 (16D32).

WHENEVER I hi-lite a word, right-click, and choose "Search Dictionary"
I'm presented with a dialog box to allow or cancel this request:
"Do you want to allow this PAGE to open “Dictionary”?"

PLEASE see the attached screenshot.

Why?

Why, if Dictionary is an Apple product embedded in the Sierra OS,
why should I have to grant it permission to open everytime!?

How to turn this off?

How to permanently allow Dictionary to simply look up selected words?

Thanks!

Solve : Imported files are missing?

Answer»

Hey guys,

I imported FILES from my iphone 6 to my pc and stored them in a map on my desktop. I thought the video files weren't imported correctly and thought I clicked SOMETHING wrong so I used ctrl z. after that the entire map was gone including photos and videos and I can't seem to find them on my computer. Can somebody help me on where to find them or have any tips?

Thanks
Are this files STILL on  the iPhone?
Have you considered sing iCloud for all your fiele SHARING between your PC and your iPhone?
http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/
If you have Windows 10, the Apple iCloud works with a Windows PC.
No need to connect your iPhone to your PC. Note: in English we say "folder" or "directory", we don't use the word "map" for that. This often happens with Dutch speakers and can cause confusion. "Map" is a Dutch/English  "false friend" -  it EXISTS in both languages but doesn't mean the same thing in both.

Like Geek says, are they still on your phone?

No the photos and videos aren't on my phone anymore. I cut them from my phone folder to my pc desktop. there I used ctrl z and the folder was gone (on my pc and because I cut them, on my Iphone)

Solve : Why will Apple use AMD chips in new designs??

Answer»

What do you think?
Sometime ago Apple went with Intel CPUs.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple's_transition_to_Intel_processors
Surely you already know that Apple will announce some new hardware with AMD instead of Intel inside. Here is a link from last year:
https://www.extremetech.com/gaming/233389-report-apple-planning-major-macbook-pro-refresh-with-amd-polaris-gpus-touchid-and-oled-function-keys

And you know that iPhones are built around ARM chips. Why? Low power.Think about that. Nobody wants  a five pound phone in his pocket.

And now for some, the switch to AMD might be  a surprise.
Is AMD cheaper?
Better design?
Faster?
More reliable?
ACTUALLY, it is mop than the above. Here's a repot you should read;
http://architosh.com/2017/02/will-apple-forego-intel-why-amds-new-ryzen-chips-look-smart-for-future-macs/
Quote

Yet, the story isn’t really about sheer performance but that AMD’s new chip line delivers stunning performance per watt compared to Intel’s i7. And that’s where this gets interesting for Apple. You see, for more than a half a decade now Apple’s design philosophy for devices has shifted to being more about economy of energy consumption over maximum performance.
This is where there seems to be better alignment. AMD’s new chip is extremely Apple-esque.
Do you agree?     All of these articles are complete nonsense BASED on no actual information from Apple, it's purely to drive traffic to those "news" websites.  You get the exact same things after any company releases a decent product.  Intel release a decent mobile chip, you get articles claiming Apple may move to Intel on mobile.  AMD release a GOOD chip, you get claims Apple will move to them.  Some new tech from ARM comes out, you get nonsense claiming Apple will move their laptops over to using ARM chips.

Are all of these scenarios possible?  Yes they are.  Are any of the articles discussing them or making them out to be something Apple is actually considering based on actual fact?  No they aren't.Read from somewhere

Intel’s GPUs only support three display streams in total. Given that a single 5K monitor requires two of them, that would mean all of them would be used driving the internal display plus one 5K monitor. AMD GPUs, in contrast, support SIX streams. This allows 15-inch MacBook Pro models to use four of them to drive two 5K monitors, a fifth to drive the internal display and still have one left over (which could drive an additional 4K display).

Solve : Apple XServe help needed?

Answer»

Hello. New to the forums. I recently bought 70 Apple Xserve Servers without Hard Drives from a GOV Auction. EMC 1971's, EMC 2107's and EMC 2144's. None of these units have Hard Drives or HD Caddies. I bought a couple of HD's off of Ebay to run some Diagnostics on these units just to see what the Hardware setup is but I'm having problems getting a Diag program to start. I'm not a Mac person, I'm a Windows person so I don't know much about Mac Operating System. My brother, who is more into the Mac stuff gave me a Snow Leopard OS X disc. What I'd like to do is run some sort of Diag program for these servers so I can see what Hardware is in them without having to take each one apart. Things like Make/Model/Processor/NIC Card/Motherboard/Peripherals/etc... How do I boot into these systems with the OS Disk my brother gave me to access this information? What KEYS do I need to press? Thanks in advance.Your trying 10.6 on these then. I'd actually see if you can get these to boot off of a Linux Distro like Ubuntu or Mint and see if it will run it. The Intel CPU's and hardware specs to me I would think that it should run Linux ok. With linux there are tools readily available to see what the hardware specs are. You might even be able to get it to boot off DVD install disc of Linux RUNNING in the LIVE environment and be able to look at specs.

70 of these servers from an auction... curious how much you picked all these up for and what your plans are for that many of them?

My knowledge of Apple is very limited. I dont care for Apple and have been mainly Microsoft and Linux OS for years. Curious if there is ability to get into BIOS on these Xserve servers to see your specs that way. Do you have the option to press Delete key or another hot key to get into the BIOS. From in the BIOS you would be able to see CPU and RAM specs and maybe even GPU for integrated GPU shared memory amount etc.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XserveIf you press and hold "C" immediately after turning it on then it should boot from the CD.  The CD you have should work on both the EMC2107 and the EMC2144 as they use Intel CPUs.  The EMC1971s are much older and use PowerPC CPUs so would only be able to run 10.5 (Leopard) as the NEWEST OS (of course there are Linux distros that will also run on PowerPC).  That said, the PowerPC ones are probably too old to really be useful for anything other than as a collectors item or to play about with.  The Intel ones would be able to be used for SOMETHING although they aren't going to be great in terms of performance per watt.

Solve : Is it worth the effort unlock an old iPhone 4??

Answer»

Is it worth the effort  unlock an old iPhone 4?
I have an old Apple iPhone four that is in good condition and would like to put it back to work as a cell phone and not be just another gadget to have around. Let me explain.
A few years ago our family started a small business and we all got cell phones from AT&T at that time. Well, to make the story short the business collapsed and eventually we finished up our contract with AT&T. And we ended up with some Apple iPhone fours that we no longer wanted to use.
The idea of unlocking an Apple iPhone was considered to be something that nice people just do not do. It was, some said, against the law to unlock an iPhone unless you're in good standing with the carrier. Well, we weren't exactly in good standing with the carrier because our business had failed and we are not ABLE to pay off all of our debts. You've probably heard that story before.
Well, some years later one of my little smart phones has died on me and I am thinking of now porting over the Sim card into my Apple iPhone four. This is the iPhone four that came before the model 4 S.

On the Internet there are now many posts, some made even within the last year, about how easy it is to not change the carrier for an older iPhone f 4. Well, I'm a little reluctant to try this because the information seems to be either too complicated or even contradictory. So I thought I would just present the idea here and see if there is some users online here that have already done this with the iPhone f4.
Certainly I don't WANT to have to pay money for anything, I would rather use free tools if available. If I have to pay for anything, I would just as soon go out and buy a new phone. But since I  have the Apple iPhone and it does work .

I already tried putting in a new Sim card and I get some very strange behavior that I do not understand. I'm not sure how the Sim card COULD've done that. Anyway, I cannot use the phone or install because the screen becomes unusable with the new Sim card. Doesn't make any sense to me, but somehow the new Sim card puts the screen on magnify and I have a hard time doing anything with it. So I'm ready to give up on the project.

But before giving up, I thought I would just ask if anybody here is familiar with the trying to do unlock on the iPhone four.
I have heard of people "Jail Breaking" them so that they can use them outside of AT&T. I myself avoid Apple products when I can, so I am of no help on this because I haven't jail broken any of these to say how hard or easy it is. Not sure if sharing info on jail breaking is allowed here so I am taking the safer approach of saying the info is out there on how to do it but i am not linking it here.  If you got your phone as PART of a contract, the first step is to contact your mobile network and obtain a personal unblocking code (PUC). Most networks will provide this service for free after a certain time PERIOD, but if you want to unlock before your contract is up – or if you’re on a pay-as-you-go contract – you’ll probably need to shell out up to 20-30$ for the privilege.

Solve : How to completely reset an iPhone??

Answer»

How to completely reset an iPhone?Connect your device to your computer using the cable that came with it.
Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod when it appears in iTunes.
In the Summary panel, click Restore.
Click Restore again to confirm that you want to restore your device to factory settings and delete all data and content. From Apple:  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201351

Follow these steps:

If you paired an Apple Watch with your iPhone, unpair your Apple Watch.
    Back up your iOS device.
Tap Settings > iCloud. Scroll down and tap Sign Out. In iOS 7 or earlier, tap Delete Account.
Tap Sign Out again, then tap Delete from My iPhone and enter your password.
Go back to Settings and tap General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. If you turned on Find My iPhone, you might need to enter your Apple ID and password.
If asked for your device passcode or Restrictions passcode, enter it. Then tap Erase [device].
Contact your carrier for help transferring service to a new owner. If you aren't using a SIM card with your device, you can contact them to get help transferring service to the new owner.

Then you are asking for a 'forensic' erase o the iPhone.
Are you trying to hide from the FBI?
Here is why I made the above remark. Whenever somebody comes to this forum ans asks about doing a full wipe out of data on a computer, phone or other data-storage device, we become suspicious ans to why the average person WOULD ever want to do such thing.
To fully wipe a device to forensic clean does not MAKE it work any better. You old data is not going to pop up and get into anything. You new girlfriend will not get the love letters you sent to your EX.

WE don't become suspicious, you do. It is none of our business why someone wants to reset a phone and your COMMENTS are uncalled for. If you don't want to provide assistance, don't post anything. Stop being the Internet police.Allan, I got the point.
Back to topic. Here is a method that might work, but is not perfect.
He could erase as much data as he can and then put new bogus data on the iPhone. The bogus stuff with overwrite some of the same memory area of the data marked for deletion.. Any  OS will over write data marked for deletion as the storage device becomes near full. After that, one could erase the bogus data. Any LATER attempt to recover data using covert methods will have a lot of bogus data and maybe some of the original data.

That is the best answer I can think of. Otherwise just destroy  the phone

EDIT: Here is a link to a site that claims to have an way to do it.
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201351
I have not done . The site claims to be part of Apple support.

Essentially, yes, compress it. Wikihow has a PRETTY good guide on it: http://www.wikihow.com/Compress-Video sorry I didn't give a better answer.
Sorry I didn't give a better answer.
You did not say what file type, or APPARENTLY I didn't see that. A common file type use for editing movies is the AVI file type. If your video is that type, then you can find utilities that will cut that type of file into smaller PIECES. This is often needed for doing anything to very large files.
Here is one website that explains this in some more detail.

I hope that is of some help.

Solve : time machine, back ups, sync, etc. HELP?

Answer»

Can someone help please.  I just need some clarifications and i can't find anybody to GIVE me straight answers.
I have macbook air.  i keep all photos, files on external HD.  i back up with time machine.  if HD not plugged into laptop, time machine shows no back up for that. if i plug it in, i can see my backup files.  I thought the idea of time machine was if something happened to my HD, (lost, etc) i would still have my files .  So why does it need to be plugged in then?  What i want to do is put another whole set of what is on my HD ONTO a cloud or something and it be exactly the same as my HD and be updated as i update my HD.  What do i use?  cloud?  back up service?  sync?   I keep researching and never find an answer, i just get more confused.  You're basically right about needing to create an additional cloud backup. Time machine basically just automates the process of backing up the contents of your Macbook's HD to your external drive - it doesn't create an off-site copy. ONE option is to keep using Time Machine in the same way, and then use a cloud service separately (iCloud, Google Drive, etc.). I'm fairly sure there are products out there that will do both automatically, at the same time though, i.e. local drive storage and cloud backup. If you search for cloud and local backup, I'm sure you'll find one. It will come at a cost though!

Solve : How can I transfer my iPhone telephone list to my Pc??

Answer»

Can I transfer phone numbers between devices? How?
It is hard for me to type on the tiny little keyboard of my Apple iPhone 4. I would like to transfer the phone number LIST to my PC and edit it using my PC. I already have a long list of PERSONAL numbers already on my PC.
The plan is to use my PC to edit and add numbers to the list and them sen it back to the iPhone. It would be nice if I could also do that with my Android devices.
Any SUGGESTIONS would be appreciated.

Solve : Working on A Small Project of Building An External Mic for A iPhone?

Answer»

I am working for a while now on a small project of building an external mic for the iPhone to be hooked in parallel to headphones (via the 3.5 mm jack). Basically, I want to replace the iPhone's original headset microphone with another microphone, but still use the headphones to listen.
Below is an image of the prototype structure (based on 2 existing products, but it is actually not working; probably due to impedance issue):

Some clarifications on the image:
item #5 - split point between microphone jack and headphones jack. item #4 - iPhone PLUG 3.5 mm item #3 - a microphone which for now is NOT working since the iPhone seems NOT to identify it (probably impedance issues - it's impedance about is about 650 Ohm) item #2 - simple headphones jack (any headphones with 3.5 mm plug can hook there) item #1 - microphone jack hooked to the external microphone I have for now. I would like to focus my question on the electrical aspects of my project for now. Known data I gathered so far (please feel free to correct any MISTAKE you identify):
iPhone supply's 1.5 V on the TRRS 3.5 mm jack. the TRRS plug of iPhone is built of from 4 pins: Left/Right/Ground/Mic Questions:
What's the power consumption per EACH PART of the iPhone headset? Each part means that there are 2 components - headphones & microphone and I need the separated power consumption (especially the microphone!) What's the current the iPhone drive on the headset microphone and what's the current DRIVEN on the headphones? Read some other answers on the impedance topic, that the iPhone identifies external microphone (on the headset for example) only if the impedance is ±1650 Ohm, but than, I read another answer which claims the required impedance is ±5000 Ohm. Any ideas what is correct? Should I plan that the microphone impedance (includes the wire) to be 1650 Ohm (or 5000 Ohm based on the answer I will get for question #3) OR the whole prototype (microphone + wires + regular headphones I will hook to 3.5 mm CONNECTOR) should be together the 1650 Ohm / 5000 Ohm? Is this correct to say that the 1.5 V supplied by the iPhone 3.5 mm audio output, means that the right/left/mic pins are positive contacts with 1.5 V vs. the ground pin (means that we have 3 parallel circuits sourced by one 1.5 V power source).
You could calculate your current for each device by I = V/R voltage at 1.5 Volts, what is your Resistance R if its 3 Ohms at 1.5 volts then I = Current = .5 Amps ( aka 500mA ). Then add up the draw of the devices and then you know.

SO

I = V/R

IS for example

.5 = 1.5/3

Solve : Why does sierra have a floating 2nd display??

Answer» HI!

Please have a look at the attached screenshots.

Why the floating -2nd- display below the main, primary, display?

What is the smaller display box below the main one that I can
left-click-hold and drag around?

Why do I need this?

I don't have multiple screens.

I'm working on a new MacBook (see screenshot).

Why the floating display?

This causes the most annoying thing: wherever I've put
it, when I mouse into that area my mouse disappears off-
screen, causing me to have to mouse back up to see it.

I hate that!

Is there a way to turn this feature off?

Thanks!

For some reason, your Mac thinks you have an external display connected to it. If you pretend along with it, select Mirror, and the mouse should stay on your desktop where it belongs.

It's possible that resetting the NVRAM COULD resolve the issue: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063, or booting into Safe Mode: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262, or resetting the SMC: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

Solve : Transferring between Windows & Mac "don't have permission to see contents"?

Answer»

Hi,

I am transferring some files from an old windows laptop to my Macbook via an external harddrive.

When I try to open the FOLDER on my Macbook I GET the message "The folder "xyz" can't be opened because you don't have permission to SEE its contents".

I've trying going to get info > sharing and permissions and it says "You have custom access" so nothing I can change.

I guess it's some settings I have to change on my windows laptop before transferring to the external HD?

ThanksTry connecting it to another Windows system first and see if you then have access to the data. One brute force method of access would involve a system with Linux running, but you would NEED a PC with Windows or Linux to try both. From the mac computer itself, I have doubts that there is a way around this. I find Apple products frustrating when it COMES to certain things before they give you enough access to get by but not enough to feel like an admin that can take control of stuff like data permissions.

Solve : One website not loading on any device connected to WiFi?

Answer»

So out of nowhere this one website is not working on my computer. It won't load and it eventually goes to an error message. I've tried other devices, other browsers, and it won't work. I then tried it on my phone, after disconnecting from the wifi, and the website loaded no problem. So the problem is definitely the wifi. Now I don't get this because it worked 2 days ago no problem. From reading other posts I'm ASSUMING it is a problem with the DNS Server. I have Comcast Xfinity but I can't figure it out from reading other forum discussions because they're all pretty old or different problems. So to summarize, One website is not working on my computer. All other websites work fine. The wifi CONNECTION is good. The one website that doesn't work on chrome, my default browser, doesn't work on any other browsers or on any other devices. When I tried it on my phone, after disconnecting from the wifi, it worked. PLEASE helpAre you using any kind of proxy for website REQUESTS?

Any non-factory config on your router (firewall, DHCP, anything)? Have you tried factory-resetting the router yet?I took a couple screenshots of my network settings. Not completely sure if I am using a proxy. No non factory firewalls and I'm not sure about the DHCP. Maybe you can help from the screenshots. I did reset the router.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Another thing, This problem occurred after visiting photobucket for the first time in a while. I was trying to post a picture to a forum. Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it.Very strange. I can't think of any reason why a single website would not work, only on Wi-Fi... the nature of the connection should be completely opaque to the website, it doesn't know which adapter you're using. Is your Wi-Fi especially slow?I'm stumped. The wi-fi is good. Not slow at all. What site is it?

www.hkpro.comAre you using a proxy or VPN to connect?I'm not sure. Do you know how I would find that out? I attached a couple screenshots of my network settings in an earlier reply. You'd remember setting it up if you had

Solve : Got a iPad as a gift, can not get mail.?

Answer»

A fiend age me here old iPad as a gift. She set up a i cloud account for me. On my PC  I can get the email.

I ask Seri to get  my email  and she tells me I do not have an App called mail.
I tried getting an app and they want me to  it.
What-am I doing wrong?
How can I get my e-mail on my  iPad?
Seri does not understand me.

The first thing you're doing wrong is not proofreading your posts. I've asked you many times before - if you are going to use voice-to-text, at least have the courtesy to proof and correct your posts.Thank you Alan for your patience. I have a HARD time with everything. Right now even my voice recognition software is nagging me that needs major Dinsmore training. It is very, very irritating. It wants me to read a LONG story that's written in itsy-bitsy teeny-weeny type font.
And then the spelling correction that sin this browser NAGS me about words that are possible or permissible in speech recognition but not recognize by my browsers spellchecker. So, after a while, I feel like giving up on the spellchecking stuff.
Anyway, about mine problem with the iPad.
It is very hard to satisfy the requirements for the iPad to get an e-mail account up. The iPad has a feature that I like, you can magnify almost anything on the screen. Except when you're trying to start up an e-mail client. It hides the password and then the type font is again a teeny-weeny itsy-bitsy little font that a person with low vision cannot see.
When will computer manufacturers realize that about 20% of the people that buy tablet computers are hoping that the tablet will enlarge the font and make it visible for people with low vision problems. Apple and Microsoft and the others are shortchanging about 20% of the elderly population by not making it user-friendly for people that have vision problems.
I don't need a itsy-bitsy teeny-weeny font when I am entering a password or answering a question. There's nobody looking over my shoulder, I'm not in a public place, I'm in the privacy of my home and I'm by myself and I like the font to be huge so I can tell what it's saying.
Thank you for letting me rant. This am doing with the speech recognition unit and I'm not even going to try to proofread it. It looks good to me and if I go back and try to proofread it it will take me three times as long to post it. And I do catch a MISTAKE and try to corrected I'll make it worse.
20 stand my problem, try bringing up your screen on your TV set and then sitting as far away from LSU can, like about 40 feet or so and try to edit something that's written in a very small font.
Again, thank you for your patience. I go to this forum because I'm pretty sure they would not let me stay on any other form out there.
I will probably have to forget about ever using my iPad to check my e-mail. Unless there is an e-mail client that's much more friendly and issued a use that what I have found so far.

Solve : Can I make my old iPhone into a bluetooth microphone??

Answer»

Rather than bu a Bluetooth microphone, can I just USE my iPhone 4 as a Bluetooth microphone? I have not tried it, but I think there is an app somewhere that does just that.

(There is ONE for Android. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wo.voice&hl=en)

Has anybody here ever don it with an iPhone?
If one is out there google should point the way. The biggest problem with Apple devices is how much control Apple has in installing programs/applications. Its one of the reasons why I avoid Apple products is that I LIKE being able to mess around with stuff and not be so restricted. This though comes at the risk of being more vulnerable to malware/virus's, but I am not just a user, i like having control of being able to ALTER and develop for devices I use without apples RESTRICTIONS.

Solve : How to make my Mac run faster??

Answer»

Hi!
What are the ways to make my Mac faster?Depending on BIOS you may or may not be able to overclock.

Perform a clean install after backing up data to an EXTERNAL drive or cloud STORAGE... Most slow downs are caused by running the same build for too long without a rebuild. After a rebuild it might feel like a totally new computer.

If your trying to run new software and your computer barely meets the requirements there is not MUCH to be done, however a SSD drive upgrade from a HDD can make for faster load times. SSD's are cheap but some Mac's are TRICKY with drive upgrades.

*** What is running slow with your Mac?Do you know some TOOLS Mac cleaner, you can use it to clean your Mac data regularly, then  your Mac will run faster

Solve : iPhone 4 (ios 7.1.2) bluetooth not seeing MCUI app??

Answer»

I have an app installed on my iPhone 4 that I need to make adjustments to the controller on my myo-electric prosthetic arm. I'm not too familiar with iPhones. I use Android and this app is not available for Android. All I can afford is this old iphone 4 that RUNS ios 7.1.2 which is suppose to run the app (which it does) (app requires ios 7.1 or newer), but this phone can't SEE the device.  (MCProPlusETD4952) in bluetooth SEARCH. The app tells me to "turn on bluetooth" but the phone bluetooth is on (eg it see's my Yamaha YB-11 audio adapter). It also does not show my laptop in bluetooth search but it will receive a BT request from my laptop and it will CONNECT to it. My laptop BT shows this iphone, YB-11 adapter and MCUI (prosthetic arm controller). So why is this app not connecting via BT? Screenshots are here:

Solve : How do I Wipe my Apple iPhone 4??

Answer»

I have had it for a few years now,...
-  but never really learned much about how it works.

Instead of trying to read the instructions, I THOUGHT I could just ask. I want to get rid of STUFF I do not need and make more room for some MP4 videos I want to have on this iPhone.

No, do not use it anymore as a phone. But is NICE for a way to take some MP4  movies with me with I am away from the house.

Is there an easy way to wipe most of the USER option stuff and reload it?

Thanks.
This is what I followed when I wiped my iPhone 6. It should be useful. It's apple's official support site, so it should work fine.Hello CaptainStark. Solve : New to Apple products?

I have always been an Android user. I need to buy an IPAD for my niece to use for school. Is there any certain version I need so I will be able to download the latest apps? It's not so much the latest apps as it is the latest OS, which enables a bunch of new FEATURES. Also, the speed of the newer iPads is significantly faster than older ones. I'd suggest just a basic iPad 9.7 inch 2017 version (referred to by Apple as just "iPad") if she doesn't need the higher end iPad models (pro, etc). Here's a model COMPARISON: https://www.apple.com/ipad/compare/She is 8 years old so I don't THINK she needs anything other than something basic.

Solve : Run Windows or Linux on an old iPhone 4 or 4S??

Answer»

Hello. I WANTED to run some OLD version of windows on one of my old iPhone 4 that is laying around or my 4S I mosly use for music. Legally. I was thinking something like 95 or 98, maybe older. Or at least some version of Linux. Again, legally. If possible, without a computer, as MINE needs to go through Startup Repair, and without jailbreak, if possible. If I can do it legally, I will do jailbreak if I have to, if I can without PC if it is not fixed yet. I will do jailbrwak IF I have to, I I can do all this legally, that is. Just wanted to do this out of curiosity. Sorry if this is the wrong forum.

And linux is an option, if all this is legal, that is.Short answer: No. The iPhone does not use a Intel based CPU. And the hardware is not even close to a PC design.

Long  answer:  Go buy a Windows phone and find out that it will not work on many windows programs. Windows phone is a waste of time. You can get a cheap Windows 8 phone on eBay for about $25, but it is hard to get any old  windows to run. I got one and found it would not run the program I wanted. But the program has another version that runs  my iPhone 4.

Better answer:  If you get the iPhone to work,  it can be good news. There are a lot of good free programs for the iPhone 4. Look in the Apple store for some free stuff that has been around for awhile. It will cost you nothing to try.
Quote

iPhone 4
System on chip:    Apple A4
CPU   1 GHz (Underclocked to 800 MHz) single core 32-bit ARM Cortex-A8 "Hummingbird"
GPU   PowerVR SGX535
Memory   512 MB DRAM

For Windows you would need a x86 or x64 type of CPU not an ARM.

For Linux there is the ArchLinux ARM Project but I havent messed with it any. https://archlinuxarm.org/

Android install on that might be easiest one jail broken BUT then you need drivers that android may not have drivers for.

As geek stated its best to just buy a Windows based tablet. I bought one for $70 on amazon the other day that has an Intel Atom CPU 2GB RAM and 32GB storage with 6GB free as seen at LINK below. Only issue is that there is an update for Windows 10 and it states i need 8GB free and only have 6 GB free so i am going to have to span the internal 32GB drive to SDCARD to make it look like the internal storage is larger in order to have 8GB free for update or delete some data like unneeded BUNDLED programs from it to get the 8GB free to perform updates. They also sell a 16GB version and no way can that be getting updates successfully with Windows 10 if the 32GB isnt big enough. I will some how get it to update through a crafty method, but for average user not being able to get an update due to too small of internal storage capacity is pretty bad. It might be why it was cheap, but I like a challenge/puzzle to work out and so I'm going to keep it and get around the space issue. https://www.amazon.com/NuVision-8-inch-Touchscreen-Quad-Core-Processor/dp/B01H3B17R8

Btw I found an ability to use symbolic links in Windows to span a 90GB SSD to a 64GB USB Flash drive before to have a C: drive that has around 150GB of storage capacity allowing me to install games spanned across SSD to USB storage and thats the direction I would go is add a microSD card to it in which i have a 16GB card free, that should simulate a volume with available space as 22GB free in which Windows should then update successfully. https://www.techrepublic.com/article/how-to-take-advantage-of-symbolic-links-in-window-10/

Note: Not everything can grow to the Flash Media though. You select a folder location that is mapped as a folder on the C: drive but its really the flash drive and this simulates combined storage space. If you were to download 10GB and the SSD only has 6GB free, unless the download is to the symbolic linked area it will fail when it runs out of SSD space. So thats the only catch. So basically I create a symbolic link to the area that Microsoft downloads the patch info to and then it updates the internal storage from the symbolic linked external storage in which to Windows it wouldnt care that its done this way.Okay. Windows... some people have figured out how to do it, that's why I asked. Maybe an ARM version of Linux at least? I know there are ARM versions of Linux. If I can legally, that is. I would use one of my two Androids, but they are my main phones. I just wanted to do this out of curiosity, though.I just found out about this app called BOCHS that can boot or emulate Windows or Linux on an iPhone - I might be able to use that, it appears legal, might use that.

Solve : iPOD to run iOS 7.1 or later??

Answer»

I need to buy a used / refurbished, etc iPod Touch as cheap as possible which will run iOS 7.1 or later. I'm a double amputee and I have a myo-electric controlled prosthetic arm. The app available to adjust the controller on my arm requires iOS 7.1 or later. I only have a PC running Windows OS and a cheap Android PHONE. This app will not run on either.
I have never owned any Apple device so I'm in the dark about what I need, other than this app requires iOS 7.1 or later, I need a touch screen, it needs WiFi and Bluetooth capability, and it needs to fit in my pocket (if possible). Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
The app is here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/motion-control-user-interface/id787443186?mt=8An iPhone 4 or above will work. Here are the iOSes that apple phones (4 and up) will go up to:

iPhone 4- up to iOS 7.1.2
iPhone 4S - up to iOS 9.3.5
iPhone 5 - up to iOS 10.3.3
iPhone 5c - up to iOS 10.3.3
iPhone 5S and up - iOS 11 (latest)

Please note Apple also has released the iPhone 6, 6s, 6 and 6s plus, 7 and 7 plus, 8 and 8 plus, and the iPhone X. Not to confuse you, be very careful and considerate when making the decision. The iPhone X has no home button, EXITS apps by swiping up.Are the requirements the same with iPod as with iPhone? In other words, I need a 4th generation iPod or later?Sorry, I thought you meant iPhones. The iPod touch 5th and 6th gen should do just fine, as they can run iOS 7.1, but you might need to do a little updting on the 5th gen if not already updated.
The iPod 5th gen can go up to iOS 9.3.5
The iPod 6th gen can run the latest iOS 11
Anything lower than the 5th gen will not run iOS 7.1, so you can get the app on the iPod touch 5th and 6th generations. Thanks Coco. Now I'm off to ebay to see what's AFFORDABLE...You need the iPod 5th generation or higher. Preferably the iPod 6th gen, as it is
only about 3 yrs old and can run the latest
iOS. Future proof, 6th gen!

Solve : The app 'Find My Phone' 'for Apple is harmfull.?

Answer»

This is  dictation.

This is a negative report about a specific Apple application. 'Find My Phone'

Recently I had a bad experience with an application that is called 'Find My Phone' and is available on the Apple store. Often this program is used to help people locate an iPhone when it has been misplaced. There are also other programs that function the same way. This post is about a bad experience specific to that particular application. I do not know if the problem is present on other applications that serve the same purpose.
And by the way, I have both Apple and android products as well as mine Windows computer. I do not claim to be an expert on Apple products, I just use them.
I am not going to go into a detailed report about what happened to me. Except to say that it was disturbing to me and to my family what happened. Apparently this experience has been duplicated by others and I do not mean just once or twice. The problem has been known for many years yet they never has, to my knowledge, then a credible explanation as to why this particular application malfunctions. But it does now function. It does so in a way that could be harmless or potentially dangerous.
Rather than trying to analyze the technical aspects, but they. Just imagine
got some brightly colored knitting yarn and decided to tie it onto things that I lose. I could tie on a 3 foot piece of yarn on my eyeglasses. I could tie a piece of yarn onto my wallet. I might time. Sometimes metaphors can be used to express an idea without getting stuck in the technicalities.
The let me say that I am a person that easily loses things. Even inside my own bedroom or my own office area. The one of the ways that I try to help myself is to put little colored tags on things or wrap little bit so wire around things or stick a piece of paper on something that I want to notice. I have poor eyesight and often I cannot find things because the color just blends into the background.
Let's just say that I started to put colored yarn on things. I would put a bright yellow piece of yarn on my eyeglasses, about 3 feet long. Next, I would put a bright green piece of yarn on my wallet, again about 3 foot long. And I might do the same for my shoes. And of course, I would do it with my iPhone and my android. Would that be a logical CHOICE or person who has trouble finding things?
Please understand that this is only a metaphor. I don't really do that. Except sometimes. Obviously having strings of yarn that are HANGING around could be dangerous. I could step on something and trip over. Or the Kitty cat could come along and pull it down to the floor and break it . So, obviously, it would be very dangerous to depend on a piece of colored yarn to help me find a lost object.
Now then, back to topic. Using a piece of software that has been untested and unproven is potentially dangerous if you use it for something very important. And that rule does apply in the case of find my phone. People are using the find my phone app for serious things. So serious, that there is the potential of a loss of property and even bodily harm because of the use of such unreliable software. Now what makes me very angry is there never has been any kind of retraction, this claim are or warning about the danger of using such an unreliable program.
Now if the program were to be used just as a game or a novelty on amusement or a party trick, that would be understandable. But people are using it for very serious things. They expected to be used for finding a very expensive piece of computer equipment, such as a high-end laptop. That is not a good idea. First of all, you should never leave an expensive laptop in some place where could be easily lost or stolen. That is just stupid. Then using an unreliable program to try to locate a missing laptop is very foolish. What are you going to do you find the laptop is in somebody else's house? How do you really know what's inside their house?
I am not going to give links about this. Four years this has been reported on the Internet and nobody's ever done anything about it. So apparently, Apple and the people who write such apps, don't really care. But I am posting this here so you know. To not rely on the find my phone app to locate a stolen laptop.. As for your phone, if you are a person that easily loses things, only used cheap throwaway phones. Stop using expensive phones.

If this is of any interest to you I could supply you a bunch of links about horror stories people have using the mentioned application. I have not find any such course stories relating to sailor applications, the only one that comes up is called 'Find My Phone'.

End dictation. There may be errors that I can not spot. "Find my Phone" is for Android phones from Google. "Find my iPhone" is the Apple App from Apple for Apple phones.

Quote

They expected to be used for finding a very expensive piece of computer equipment, such as a high-end laptop.

People are not using Find my *Phone* and Find my *iPhone* to find a high end laptop, as those work exclusively with Android and Apple phones and tablets. (For Apple, they have a *separate* "Find My Mac" service). So now we know you don't even understand what the apps do or how they work. That's probably why you had to provide a useless analogy. "Find my Phone" and "Find my IPhone" I might add, are similar useless at locating a missing pet.

"Find my Phone" and "Find my iPhone" allow you to use the Phone's GPS to keep track of where it is, and you can see a general area of where it is when you lose it. Can be very useful if you've misplaced it during say a trip and it could have been misplaced in any number of places you had been. The phone(s) can also be locked remotely, which means if it was stolen your private data cannot be accessed. It can also take pictures using the phone's camera.

If the phone is stolen, rather than simply misplaced, then you can track where it goes. As far as actually recovering the phone, having GPS tracking/location information will typically be enough to encourage local police to assist in recovery. Since most thefts are thefts of opportunity, the appearance of police with you has a substantially better chance of them returning it, usually with some barely plausible but not easily disprovable story like "Oh I was just holding it for you".

The instances where the feature is less useful are the criminals who know what they are doing. The Find my iPhone and Find my Phone services only work if the phone is turned on and has an Internet connection. Removing the SIM card and not connecting the phone to the Internet, and then resetting it, is enough to evade the utility. However those are actually far less common.

Quote

Ahh of course. That's theft solved! Similarly, one can avoid being murdered if you don't let people kill you.

At best the software could be part of a plan approved by local police.

I read the Apple documentation and found no help on howto recovery a stolen laptop.

In fact, it is hard to prove laptop ownership. You can not just go up to a house and walk in and find your laptop. You, not the thief will spend the night in jail.

This article was published a few months ago.  I should have been 8 years ago.

Sorry, but it’s been posted here before. Police simply don’t consider a find my iPhone hit just cause to go to someone’s home, and no court will issue a warrant based on just that anyway, so they’d not be able to go in or do anything. The location is considered approximate, and tells nothing about whom there may actually posses the device giving the location data.
The GPS system can not identify the enemy.

Does part of the function of "find my iphone" include legal advice on current law regarding stolen goods? No. That doesn't even make any sense.

Does it make possible legal recovery of stolen goods?

Yes. I quite literally stated as much in my previous post.

Can it protect a vigilant owner from a hostile thief?

As I mentioned, if a "hostile thief" is somebody who has a good idea how to circumvent the technology than no, it doesn't offer much protection.

If a phone is lost, "Find my iPhone" can be used to find it if it was misplaced.  That can be particularly useful if one doesn't notice it is missing for a while- it could have easily been misplaced in any number of places.

You are looking at the documentation for how to use the software.

Alright? I never stated otherwise.

As I noted, and you will probably ignore again, if the device is simply lost, and not stolen, the software can be used to find where it is.

When iPhones and laptops get stolen, it's usually a crime of opportunity, without much sophisticated planning. Somebody with loose morals sees an opportunity, like a iPhone or laptop that is unattended and swipes it. The appearance of the owner with confident claims that "they know they have it" is often enough for them to go "oh you misunderstand, I saw it was left alone and I kept it safe!" and they return it.

Oftentimes local law enforcement will happily help by merely being present- That can often be enough to make the thief capitulate. (This isn't always the case, and there are plenty of examples of both). The results of the App itself are evidence but it is not enough on it's own. If the thief answers the door with the stolen phone in their hand which can be made to make sounds through the "Find my iPhone" App by you then that could very well meet the criteria- Not to mention a thief stupid enough to answer the door with something they just stole in their hand isn't likely to have a full grasp of the law regarding this situation.

It's much less useful against the far less common thief who actually knows how to "protect" themselves to prevent you from being able to do anything. In those situations of course there isn't much you or law enforcement can do. the granularity of the GPS is not enough to count as probable cause for any sort of search. But that happens far less often, and such thieves are usually looking to steal and then resell the product to make money, and a Phone or laptop that was connected up with the "Find my iPhone" and "Find my Mac" feature becomes mostly worthless for that. An iPhone can be locked remotely. It actually turns out that you cannot actually forcibly reset or unlock it either- the icloud lock has to be released first. Aside from securing your personal data, That makes the phones worthless to them- Certainly far more worthless than a phone that doesn't have "find my iPhone" prepared on it, which can be fairly effortlessly reset and then resold on eBay.Struggling to see what the issue is here, the app isn't designed for people to track down thieves of stolen devices and to attempt to get the device back themselves.  If people are using it for that then it's hardly the fault of the app.

I've used the Android device locator many times, even for something as simple as me going out somewhere and realising I don't have my phone, it's been great for the peace of mind to be able to check that I have in fact just left it at home and not dropped it en route.

It has already saved me before when I was in university and my phone must have fallen out my pocket in a lecture and got caught in the folding seat. I only noticed that I didn't have it about an hour after I'd left the lecture by which point I'd already GONE for lunch, hung around with others and wandered all over the campus in and out of different buildings.  Realistically I could have dropped my phone in any of those locations however I was able to run to a PC and locate the exact building that the phone was in.  I was then able to call security to let me into the building where I set off an alarm on the phone to allow me to find it.

That's not the first time either, back in high school I must have left my phone sitting on a desk and only realised later that night when I was back at home.  I stupidly didn't have a device locator app installed (back then it wasn't built into the OS, think this was back in the days when I was running Android 2.2 "Froyo") but I was able to use "Plan B" from Lookout which I was able to install remotely and get the device's location which showed that it was somewhere around the area of the school office.  Turns out that it hadn't been stolen and someone had handed it in to lost property.

It's also not just about the ability to locate the device.  With Android Device Manager I can also lock the device down to require my Google Account to unlock while displaying a message on the screen (such as with my contact details) or if it comes to it and I find the device has been stolen, I can at least remotely wipe it to clear off any sensitive data.camerongray,
Thank you. Your post helps balance this topic. As you said, the app was not designed to catch criminals. Still, in some cases, it has done that.

My experience was very negative to the extreme. Two policemen came to my door and stated pounding the front door at 2 am in the morning. They claimed I was holding a stolen Apple laptop on my property.. That was not true. The scenario became tense.  They insisted to going over all of my halt acre annoying other three other family members living on the back of my property.

The laptop was never found and we never heard anymore about it. No explanation. They said the app was 'Find My Phone'**  and did not provided enough detail to allow me to find out what was going on. And they had guns.

** In California English 'Find My Phone' and 'Find My iPhone' are acoustically equal.
Thant is why I call it by what I heard. The also said an 'Apple Laptop'. I have no idea what an Apple laptop is. Anyway, no strange device has shown up on my router. All devices found in the router's list  are things that belong to our family.

My gut feeling is to blame the app, not my Comcast router. But I might be wrong. I wasted half an hour trying to speak with Comcast during business hours. Is that evidence that Comcast does not want to address this issue?  What does comcast have to do with your story?BC, I will answer the question. But first...

Sorry, MacBook Pro doesn't have any GPS chips.
However, , you can locate the location of your MacBook pretty easily with the Wi-Fi.
I've tried Find my Mac with the iCloud and the locating service is pretty accurate.

No, no model of Mac has ever shipped with a GPS chip.
Location services on Macs determine use Wi-Fi hotspot geolocation. It’s not as good as GPS, but is good enough for most uses.
https://www.quora.com/Does-the-MacBook-Pro-have-a-GPS-chip-inside-of-it

The Comcast router gives out misleading information. This was considered before on other sites. The router has a 'virtual Wi-Fi' that appears to be a public hot spot. It gives out bad information about the location of any device that uses the Wi-Fi for location. Don't get me started on that topic.

I called Comcast (AKA Xfinity) and made a deal to upgrade me and shut off  wireless for everybody. I think this is the end of the story.
More detail.
Comcast and Xfinity are the same.
One name is mostly for cable TV, the other for Internet services.
My Comcast router can also have a 'virtual wireless'  gateway for guests. Only Comcast has control over this.It has been ranted elsewhere. One would think con tarty to common law. In effect, they have a lemonade stand on my front lawn.

I talked at length to a service representative. Now the thing does not participate in the Xnfinity stuff. Below is a screen shot.

I am CASA-4965 at about  -25 db and the Xfinity thing is down at -82 db. That means some body else is hosting the thing. But not me anymore.

I am waiting to serif the cops go to one of the neighbors and baton the door at 2 AM in the morning. Just making a jest. It is not funny at all.

Solve : Do you think Apple will drop Intel and go AMD??

Answer»

Do you?
Have you READ this thing in MacWorld ?

Apple should drop Intel for AMD
Rumor has it that Apple is planning to PRODUCE its own CPUs and GPUs for Macs. Those T2 processors we have today are just a tiny first step—the big leap is to take something like the A12X and build a MacBook around it. It makes sense from the perspective of both power-to-performance ratio and a cost-to-performance ratio. Perhaps more importantly, it puts Apple fully in control of its whole platform, and allows the company to innovate in ways it can’t when it cedes the very heart of its computers to other companies.
Myself, It is hard to believe.
What do you think?
But fist look at this:
Apple is actively working on Macs that replace Intel CPUs
A new Bloomberg report claims Apple is working on its own CPUs for the Mac, with the intent to ultimately replace the Intel chips in its computers with those it designs in-house.
According to Bloomberg's sources, the project (which is internally called Kalamata) is in the very early planning stages, but it has been approved by executives at the company. The report says that Apple could ship computers based on its own processors as early as 2020, but the report also says this would be part of a "multi-step transition" in a larger effort to make iOS devices and Macs "work more similarly and seamlessly together." Apple could STILL change or drop these plans in the future.

I can't see any reason to move to AMD, nor does that article particularly give any compelling reasons for them to do it.  I can definitely see the moving to ARM in the future which is what most articles about "Apple dropping Intel" are about and given the current year on year performance gains on ARM vs on x86 along with Apple already having experience of switching CPU architecture multiple times in the past, I wouldn't see this as a particularly bad thing either.

As for the move to AMD, I cannot see this happening (for the CPUs anyway, they already use AMD for GPUs) - Out of the reasons in the article, literally the only one that's remotely valid is price to performance ratio. The fact that one of the points is that the AMD subreddit has more members than the Intel one (clearly forgetting that AMD both make CPUs and GPUs) clearly shows the author was clutching at straws.

For Apple to move to AMD, it means they would have to support both Intel and AMD with their software whereas currently they only need to support Intel.  Intel also tend to be ahead of AMD when it comes to mobile chips (which is a fairly large part of Apple's market) and Intel also supports technologies such as Quick Sync which massively accelerates video encoding.  This is likely why my MacBook Pro can render H.264 video almost twice as fast as my Ryzen 7 1700x desktop!

Then let's not forget that AMD don't currently have any sort of official support for ThunderBolt 3 which is one of the key features of the new Macs - having used it on my MacBook Pro with a ThunderBolt 3 docking station, I can't see myself getting a machine without it in the future. Apple even now have official eGPU support over ThunderBolt 3.Thunderbolt 3

Your remark about ThunderBolt 3 got me. I plead ignorance.

So I am now trying to get up-to-date on ThunderBolt 3 stuff.

This will take awhile.
It's essentially a new port co developed by Intel and Apple (although it's also available on PCs too) which uses a single USB C connector to carry power, USB, DisplayPort and, most importantly, PCI-E over a single cable.  This allows connection of regular USB peripherals and monitors all the way thorough to PCI Express devices such as full graphics CARDS.  With my system I use a ThunderBolt 3 docking station (CalDigit TS3 Plus) connected to all my devices so with a single cable into my laptop I can connect power, a pair of monitors, keyboard, mouse, audio interface connected to my speakers and a gigabit wired network.  If I wanted to I could even daisy chain a GPU off of the dock and still have a single cable to the laptop.  It's also fully backwards compatible so you can still connect regular USB and displayport devices.  It's by far the most flexible interface available on the market.Let's see if I have this right.
It is not just a smaller connector and higher speed.
It is also a more complex protocol.
It requires new design back into the CPU and GPU.

That last thing is hard for me to grasp. It would suggest only devices with the best CPU/GPU could offer the full range of new features of  Thunderbolt 3.

So then,if AMD is not into this new stuff, they can not come to the party.
Is that right?

Yeah, the connector carries PCI Express and is pretty tightly tied to the chipset (and GPU on some machines).  As far as I'm aware it's now royalty free but would still require CPU and chipset support which AMD don't currently offer.

There is a security weakness in Face tiem. If you do something stupid, you can hear the other PERSON's conversation -before they know you want to face time them.

You may have now hear about it. So what? Well Apple makes such a thing about security. But does it really matter? I was found by a youngster who was not looking for a flaw. Now comes the funny part. The real absurd part.

Guess what HAPPENED when his mother talked to Apple support.

GOOGLE it yourself. Everybody has the story. But the ONE that is often skipped is about the woman who claims she tried to tell them and the support person really brushed her off. He told her she was not authorized to report a bug in the program. Unless she paid Apple $99 up FRONT.

Solve : Non-original lightning cables?

Answer»

Hey everyone. I’m seeking some advice for buying a lightning cable. The thing is, i think to originals from Apple is really expensive, but i’ve found some that is alot cheaper danish site: https://www.avxperten.dk/lightning-kabel/ (we dont have amazon in denmark). The cables is not produced by Apple, but is still MFI approved. What is your experience with lightning cables that isn’t produced by Apple but still approved for use on an iphone? Here in the United States with have a wide choice of vendors. My PERSONAL experience has been mixed, a few are bad but most offbrand's had been very good.
The cable YEAR referred to is also called a charging cord. Specifically, it is accord that adapts a standard USB connection over to the smaller USB connection that is now standard on iPhone and I had device.
Okay, thank you for answering my question I have experience using an iPhone for over 7 years. I will say this, it used to be easier, but with new cables is complete nonsense. Not the ORIGINAL ones work 50 to 50. I bought quality ones that are not cheap, which after a couple of hours of work stopped working, and took the cheapest Chinese WORKED until the contacts inside were ERASED. I always use only the original. if I’m breaking, then I’m buying second-hand, not so expensive, better than Chinese.

Solve : How can I normally start my iMac after a botched update to macOS High Sierra??

Answer»

I tried to update my 27-inch iMac (currently with Sierra) to macOS High Sierra which has totally messed it up. (I believe my iMac is a 2010 model, as I remember purchasing it new in box in 2011, but it was advertised as the older model and purchased on a discount). My wish to update started with a problem in my wired Apple keyboard; keys like caps lock, tab, escape stopped working for the last few weeks. I tried fixing it by trying different things in Settings (based on recommendations from various sites); nothing worked, so I hoped updating the OS to a newer version might help. Bad idea. My iMac was thrown into a loop of the error: something like "an error occurred while verifying firmware" or something. From there, it's all got really complicated. As I was trying different things to start my computer normally again (at this point, I didn't care about the keyboard keys or updating to High Sierra; I just wanted my computer back), I might have even mistakenly erased the HD or something. I realized this when I wasn't seeing any disk to choose to restore the system from my time machine or anything. All I saw was my external hard drive/backup machine (G drive).

Please don't recommend starting the iMac by pressing Command+R keys or such, because I suspect my keyboard has stopped working entirely since none of those suggestions worked. Moreover, before trying to update to High Sierra, one of my attempts to make my keyboard keys work was to set the command and control keys as capslock and escape keys (since those last two keys had stopped working, as noted before, and I needed the capslock etc keys more than command/option; or so I thought, argh). So, now my keyboard cannot help me boot my computer in the safe mode or anything. How can I normally turn on and use my computer again? This is terrible with impending project deadlines. I'd greatly appreciate any help.

P.S. My iMac has ALSO been terribly slow for a long time now. I wonder if it's burned down completely or something. And the update attempt was the last straw. I have to admit I didn't have time to figure out what is causing it. Whether is a virus or maybe even virus protection software (these problems might have heightened after installing avast software, for example--I am not sure). Is yours on the support list under system requirements at the link below:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacOS_High_Sierra

Did you get this OS update through NORMAL means through Apple, or are you attempting to install it some other way?

Do you have your original installation media to set it back to new factory install?

Is there a computer REPAIR shop in your area that can help you diagnose problems with the Apple hardware that you might not be able to test yourself?YES, that is the system I tried to upgrade to (my current os is sierra).

Yes, I clicked on update through Apple.

I think I do have some CDs for the original settings-I can check. But I was kind of hoping just being able to get rid of the high sierra error and log into my imac as usual. I believe factory settings will erase everything. While I do believe my external disk should have backed up my stuff, I cannot be sure. I guess I can test to see in a different computer (Borrowed laptop).

There might be a shop around but was considering it as a last resort (esp. for a larger computer and when I don’t have much time outside of my work currently) and see if there’s a way to fix this on my own first. Looks to be a common issue with failed updates making a keyboard malfunction: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/254140/my-usb-apple-keyboard-stopped-working-after-upgrading-to-sierraAh! You can try downloading anti-MALWARE program and that should help to get rid of any PUPs, malware or outdated files and possible system vulnerabilities. Cleaning junk files might make a significant difference on the speed and performanceOliviaRoss is right, mainly junk files and malware can slow down your mac. Aside from cleaning our your files, you may want to just sync your photos with ICLOUD so they won't take up too much space. You can also clear the cache: Launch CleanMyMac, then choose System Junk. Press Scan and then Clean.Clean junk files and app cache. this would make it run faster.

Solve : Evaluating 2 Macs?

Is it possible to say whether one MacBook model is better then the other? The two I am interested in is:
A. 2017 13" 3.1GHZ dual core i5
B. 2018 13" 2.3GHZ quad core i5

For a bit of background; I took my 2017 Mac for the keyboard recall REPAIR, the store broke the screen in the process and GAVE me the 2018 Mac as a resolution. It feels slower, but Apple tells me to wait for the Mojave update as the source of the issue. I am a neanderthal with TECHNOLOGY and have no idea if I have been fudged over or not..

anyway i was wondering if anyone had a copy of it or knew where to get a copy
i GOT a PC game that was made buy after dark and it said it had a bonus screen saver but it wasn't the one i was was looking for *sigh*If unable to be found on Google search then you can see if you can find it on ebay or amazon for sale. I have found old software and games at both of those locations for sale. Biggest thing is knowing the exact title. I looked for after dark screen savers and found some but it was the flying toasters etc.

Not sure about if Apple has any "Abandonware" WEBSITES or not but that would be ANOTHER place to look.

Is there any way to know if you have a malware in your Macbook using the available tools/software already installed in the computer?

Someone told me there are no viruses in Mac so what I probably have is a malware.

I just have this macbook for a year and now it keeps hanging twice or three times a month since 2 MONTHS ago. I suspect I have been infected by malware.Hey boruto, I worked (briefly) in apple product support and they endorse the use of Malwarebytes for malware.  I would definitely download the free version for Mac and run a scan.  Other things to check are making sure the software is up to date and that you have at least 15% free space on the hard DRIVE.  Cleaning up junk FILES on a Mac is quite a bit more involved than on windows.  Steps can be found on the official apple support page.Okay thanks for the info. Is there something on Macbook similar to the CC Cleaner in Windows? Can't seem to locate where the CC cleaner is (that is if they also have one)https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner-macDownload and run MalwareBytesYou should MAKE your MacBook scan again but make sure this time you need to make it full scan it will be time taking but at the end of scanning you will be found malware if any is there in your pc otherwise some other reason for hanging and slow speed.

yeah just have iTunes sync the file to your ipod, should be converting the file anyway......Unless he's doing it the old fashioned way of just regular drap and drop in Win Explorer. If you are using iTunes, right click on the song and click 'Convert to AAC' or 'Create AAC version.'

That will convert the song into a format your iPod should be able to play.

All MP3 encoders aren't the same, so the one that was used to make that MP3 might not have created a final product that works on iPod. Quote from: TorrentIt on May 04, 2009, 03:03:10 PM

This is incorrect.

.MP4 files are the native codec used on the iPod.  However, iPods are fully capable of playing mp3's.

The other posters are probably correct in that the program that converted these to mp3's probably converted them in a funky manner.

If the songs will play in itunes at all, try the "convert to aac" option as suggested.

Solve : keyboard problem with mac mini?

My mini does not RESPOND to the space bar on the keyboard. No problem with the keyboard when used with other computers. How can I rectify? Is it just the spacebar, and just on this keyboard?  Have you tried other keyboards on the mac mini? The keyboard works OK when connected to other computers. The problem only exists on this one apple Mac mini and only space bar. All other keyboard buttons register.

FredTry resetting the keyboard SHORTCUT preferences in SYSTEM Preferences. The space bar may have BEN set up a s a shortcut for a 3rd party program currently installed. You never stated what kind of keyboard you have??? if it is one of those keyboards from Apple (the little white one where you have to have a hammer to type) get rid of it. I just changed keyboards, no more little white one from apple and repplaced with a Logitech that works with Mac. GOOD luck
