Solve : Mac Desktop: Games freezing and graphics glitching??

Answer»

Alright so my uncle gave me his old desktop mac. Its nice but when I run a game like wow, spore, sims, or any game- it runs really smoothly at first, but eventually freezes, goes black, or the graphics mess up so bad you can't see what's going on. The INTERNET and most other programs don't seem to have any issues and for the most part I love the mac- just really wish the gaming quality was nicer. Wondering what I can do (preferably cheaply) to fix this problem? Is it a MOTHERBOARD issue/processor/heating/ram? I have no clue. Any help would be great You gave no info on which desktop Mac ( some are easy to open, others are not).  See my signature as a sample for minimum useful info to give.  If you need help identifying the machine, DOWNLOAD the free MacTracker for your OS:

http://www.mactracker.ca/

But---

going with your runs OK for a while (eliminates minimum hardware specs), then messes up, I would guess a heating problem.  Clear the vents, blow out the dust bunnies, check the fans and heat sinks ---

ADDITIONAL RAM always helps, as does a reasonably healthy hard DRIVE. Depending on your OS, you may need as much as 20% available space for temporary files.

The info you sent by Private message indicates:

2006-2007 era Mac Mini or iMac, probably.  RAM limits and video cards vary

The mini looks like a white box that you plug your own keyboard and monitor into (like the ones from your old windows machine)

The iMac looks like a flat panel monitor on an L shaped metal stand. If you can tell me which ---- along with Model name and model identifier (available by selecting "More Info..." in that About this Mac panel --- it's in the hardware section at the top.  Also quick check "Diagnostics")

Once we have that, then we can move on to pointing you to the right nut-and-bolt info.

Solve : Converting .zip files?

Answer»

i just downloaded a version of "Wine" which is a free application that will let you run Windows applications. i downloaded it and its a .zip file, im not sure how to change this to something that will enable it to work.... any help please?

Hardware Overview:

  Model NAME:   iMac
  Model Identifier:   iMac5,1
Processor Name:   Intel Core 2 Duo
  Processor Speed:   2 GHz
  Number Of Processors:   1
  Total Number Of Cores:   2
L2 CACHE (per processor):   4 MB
  Memory:   1 GB
  Bus Speed:   667 MHz
  Boot ROM Version:   IM51.0090.B09
  SMC Version:   1.8f2

Try here: http://en.softonic.com/s/winzip-mac:macNot necessary.  You're running a mac with OS X installed.

All you need to do is double CLICK on the zip file to expand it.

It should then create a folder with the contents of the zip file in it.

Open the folder and take what you need.you can do that but the software MAY have additional features you may want.      You might want to reconsider --- if you can't handle a zip file with your Mac, then you definitely do not have the where-with-all to deal with Wine.

Take a peek at
http://wiki.winehq.org/MacOSX

I'd SUGGEST spending the $ for Bootcamp, Parallels, etc.

Did anyone realise that this topic is over 2 weeks old and the OP hasn't replied?

If I put a Belkin Bluetooth USB adaptor into my Toshiba Laptop, will it let me USE my laptop as a Wireless keyboard and write to my iPhone with the latest v4 Software?Bluetooth wireless TECHNOLOGY provides a WAY for mobile professionals to take advantage of using printers while on the road and helps them cut down on the amount of mobile gadgets they'll need to carry.

Yes, that's it in one. I was wanting to save the £50 by not bying an Apple Blutooth Keyboard.

Thanks for you reply.  Pete.I've BRIEFLY looked into this a few weeks ago. Didn't get far.

I've tried an Apple Keyboard with the iPhone. Amazing

You may want to have a look at this cheaper option:

The Camera Connection Kit is basically iPod to SD Card and iPod to USB.
I've seen videos on Youtube of keyboards working using this method. Not sure if it's 100% legit though...

Solve : Mac working with HP Printer?

Answer»

Hi Everyone,
I hope someone can HELP me.  I just bought a HP Photosmart C4680 printer, and tried to install it.  The first stage of the installation WENT fine, and then I got to the set up assistant SECTION.  I get the select drivers window and it doesn't have any printer listed, so I select the my device is not listed button and continue.  The NEXT page my printer is listed so I selected it and continue.  The next page asked me to select a device again but once again no printer is listed so I select the my device isn't listed button again, and this time a pop up window says that I need to download the drivers from the HP website.

I've done this, and went through the installation process again, but once again I get to the same part of the set up assistant section and it does the same thing.  Further checking on the HP website says that since I am operating on the LATEST Mac OX system that the drivers should already be on my Macbook.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what I could try?

Thanks

There's nothing blocking you from doing that.  In fact, you don't need to drag the music to purchased.  All you have to do is import your cd's into iTunes and then PLUG in your iPhone.  Once your iPhone shows up, go to the music tab and tell it which playlist to sync.  You can even pick specific songs if you're on the latest and greatest iPhone OS and iTunes version. Thanks for you reply. I have nowsorted it out, or atleast my iIhone has. Thanks for your reply. Pete.No problem!

Solve : Laptop battery replacement ? ? ??

Answer»

Using a MACBOOK with 10.5 OS and having battery PROBLEMS.  For the past 3-4 months I have noted that I can get no longer then 1-2 hours using only battery power, although it indicates I actually start with 100%.  At the same TIME, I noted that the fan has been running continuesly when ever the computer is ON regardless of being charged or not plugged in while operating.

I felt I needed a new battery and have gotten one and it's INSTALLED.  I continue to have the same problem even with a brand new battery.

Is there some procedure I have omitted in INSTALLING the new battery, or is there a problem with the computer and I didn't really need a new battery??  I charged the new battery to 100% and then used it without the cord to bring it down to 1-2%.  It has been recharged back to 100% twice, but I still am unable to get more then 1-2 hours out of the full charge.

Suggestions would be most welcome.  Thanks   Bob,

There are a few things to check.  First- are you using a lot of applications while using the laptop?  If you're watching movies, editing movies, or playing games it can significantly lower the amount of time the laptop will last off of a battery.

Also, if you go into system preferences under "energy saver" you can change some preferences to help the battery life last longer.  If the fan is continously running loudly (even when not doing anything), you may want to bring in your macbook to the apple store and have them take a look at it (which is free).

One last thing you can do to help the battery is to properly calibrate it.  Charging it to 100% then running it down to 1 or 2% is good, but it's not quite a full calibration.  Follow the ARTICLE here on apple's site to calibrate it properly: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490Problem Solved via a visit to the GENIUS bar the APPLE store.

Checked out the Activity Monitor and learned that an old PRINT program consisting of multiple pages from some months ago, got 'hung-up' and couldn't print hence ran continuously drawing down the battery  ! ! !

Dumped the hung-up pgm and all is back to normal.

IT'S EASY WHEN YOU KNOW HOW ! ! ! !

Thanks for your comments.Good!  The genius bar is always a great help.

Thanks for updating us on the fix!  thanks for introudction on genius bar for me-a computer greenhand. Quote from: socrates on September 28, 2009, 10:30:34 AM

Solve : putting iphone music in itunes?

my brothers computer had to be wiped out and he started all over. unfortunately he was not ABLE to back up anything. Now hes  trying to put the music from his Iphone back onto his computer but having no luck. can someone help with step by step or GIVE me an idea where i might find this out
thank you
maryIf the music was purchased from the iTunes store, just hook it up to your computer and it will ask you if you want to transfer your purchases back to the computer.

If they weren't bought from iTunes, you'll have to find 3rd party software (google "senuti" if you're using a mac) to help you get it back.Hi

the option to DOWNLOAD again From Iphone to  Itunes can only be done with music bought on Itunes ( was already told on Last Post).
You can TRY download it to a PC/Apple and them import to Itunes , that should Work too.

Hope that helps. Quote from: azulyx on October 30, 2009, 07:09:10 AM

Solve : Accessing FTP using Mac?

Answer» HI !

My company is using FTP to transfer files from and to our customers.

Normally, for PC users, we just type the ftp address in the address bar (in Explorer or Browser) then we'll be prompted for username and password then we'll end up in the designated FOLDER.

However, I have a new customer who uses a Mac, and when he log in as we normally do with PC, the FTP administration monitor doesn't see him logging in i.e. no activity is LOGGED. He said he can copy and paste files into the folder, but I cannot see them, and he cannot see the files I put into the folder too.

I know little about Mac, can anyone help?

Thanks a lot.
There is a specific tick box that enables FTP sharing between computers.

System Preferences > Sharing > Options (bottom right) > Tick - 'Share Files and Folders Using FTP'

When you are sharing the files using FTP, are you using a GENERIC folder to place the files in? On a Mac there is a 'Drop Box' folder that only the user who's account it is can OPEN, but others can 'drop' files into. This can be located at 'Username' > Public > Drop Box.On my end, my company is running Win XP on PC, and we have designated folder for each user. Once they log in they'll end up in their own folders and cannot access the others. FTP software is required for the Mac. Search MacUpdate.com for options.

Transmit (www.panic.com) is my favourite paid app.
CyberDuck (www.cyberduck.ch) is probably the best free option.

grnidbttfly,
How old is your son? Is he old enough to be able to describe his activity?
Do you get any error messages when trying to use your browsers?
What exactly happens when you try to use them?
What is your exact OS?You also didn't take the time to ask. When it comes to troubleshooting, about 80% of the people aren't going to give the necessary information. We sometimes have to pull a few TEETH to get the info we need.

Solve : AntiVirus for Mac?

Answer»

I just got my first Mac and I know EVERYONE says you don't have to worry about viruses on a Mac, but I'm used to PCs and I don't feel safe running a computer with no virus software. Also, I'm constantly sharing files with PEOPLE and emailing them back and fourth so I'd like to make sure that if SOMEONE sends me an infected file I don't pass it on to another friend.

My question is, what antivirus software does everyone recommend? I know on a PC Norton and McAfee and memory hogs, so I'm sure they probably are on a Mac also. There are plenty of free antivirus programs for a PC too, so I was wondering if there were any good free ones for a Mac.

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Solve : Ipod not working :(?

Answer»

Quote from: Anythingwill on August 20, 2008, 11:32:44 AM

No, when i move it nothing happens. On screen it still shows the little lock to say that hold is on

(and before you start wondering, i only see the menu with the little lock because it comes on when you plug it in. I, of course, can't turn it on with the hold switch messed up)

It could be defective then. Try turning the hold switch to the off position (so you don't see any red coloring on the switch) and then try the reset I recommended. If it doesn't reset then it is probably a HARDWARE problem with the switch.

Otherwise, if you live near an apple store, feel free to sign up for a genius bar appointment on their WEBSITE (apple.com/retail). The appointments are free and they could tell you for sure what the problem is.

Solve : File sharing between a PC and a Mac ????

Answer»

I have a network setup in my house with 3 PCs and I just got a MacBook Pro and I’m wondering, how do I file share between the PCs and the Mac?
I was reading some articles online, but nothing seemed to really work. I want to be able to share a folder on the network, just like you do on a PC. I can get my PCs to see my Mac on the network, but not the files I want to share. I have tried so many different things that I don’t even know where to start.
On a PC it’s as simple as right clicking on the folder you want to share and clicking on “share this folder”.
This is my first Mac, so bare with me.
I would appreciate any help you can give me.
Thanks in advance.
Sharing your Mac's files are really simple.

Go into your System Preferences - Click the Sharing folder (under Internet & Networking):

Make sure file sharing is ticked in the left hand COLUMN, and click on that section to select it
Under 'Shared Folders' click on your account and then CHOOSE 'Options' in the bottom right
Tick the option for sharing using SMB, and make sure your account is ticked in the lower box.
Click 'Done'

On a Mac you can right click any folder/file you want to share, choose 'Get Info' and under the 'General' section tick the 'Shared Folder' box - voila you have now shared your folders with a Windows PC.

Bare in mind FIREWALLS may play a PART in access issues.
On the Mac under system prefs>sharing>tick windows sharing. Then have a sharing folder on your desktop>name it so that Windows can find it.
You will find that it is easier to do on the Mac than it is on Windows.

So you wouldn't be ABLE to use that disc on any other machine (this would most likely be in fringement of their LICENSING laws anyway).agreed

Solve : Connecting Vista to a Mac?

Answer»

Hi all

I'm TRYING to connect a Vista PC to a mac and I'm having problems.

The first problem is I really don't know anything about Macs so please bear with me.

I've been following directions I found online which say to enable 'Windows Sharing' in the mac system settings but when I got to the screen there is no option for 'Windows Sharing'

Is there something else I should have done first?

The mac is OS X Version 10.5.4 and the pc is a Vista.

Both computers are connected to a router for internet access and this works fine. I just need to transfer very big files between the 2 and I thought this would be the easist way. Aparently not.

Any help would be much apprecated.

OK,thans. i'll kep eye out for him.
Sorry, I'm out on work trips frequently and am away from the forums at times.

Thanks Zylstra for letting them know about my periods of absence

Davva, here's what you need to do:

Go to your system preferences, and click on "sharing."

On the left hand side check the box that says "file sharing." It should then change to "file sharing: on" on the right hand side. It should also TELL you how to get to your mac share via your vista computer (like by browsing or going to afp://IP.Address.Here)

You'll notice that you have the ability to choose what folders are shared from that menu as well. Click on the plus sign under "shared folders" to add more folders that are shared. By default the only one shared is your "public" folder.

You'll also notice on the right hand side that you can choose what abilities each user has (read, write, both).

Let me know if you get stuck.btw: here's a newer article on how to setup the file sharing (the one Zylstra sent you was a good one but isn't really meant for OS 10.5)

Solve : Can't Send Mail?

Answer»

I'm getting ERRORS when trying to send mail through Mail. I sent mail yesterday and it worked but today its telling me that it cannot find the server. How can I fix this?Have you got any details on your provider?

Are you using a mac.com address or internet providers address? What has been done on or to the machine in the last 24 HOURS of you having the problem?

Double check your Mail account settings and ensure your log in name and password are correct (mine were reset once after a software update).I would like to know how you are sending the emails and what the error messages are. What exactly are the error messages? What kind of account do you have? ie: mac.com, gmail? Do you have an internet connection?

First I would check internet CONNECTIVITY, then I would check to see if I am still LOGGED in. Maybe your credentials got reset. It happens.

Solve : EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES ON MAC?

MY MAC OSX VERSION 10.3.9 DOESN'T LET ME READ ANY HARD DRIVES, HAVE TRIED TO PLUG IN 4 DIFFERENT ONES AND NONE APPEAR ON MY FINDER OR ANYWHERE. I HAVE USED USB SMALL DRIVES AND THOSE WORK PERFECTLY AND ANYTHING THAT I CONNECT THRU MY USB WORKS JUST FINE EXCEPT FOR EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES. I HAVE NO IDEA SO IF ANYONE HAS A SUGGESTION PLEASE HELP.

THANKS
DO THEY WORK ON ANOTHER COMPUTER?

Please don't use caps.yea they all work in other computers, checked in both Mac and PC.Sorry, it seems this post has slipped.

Unfortunately, this post wouldn't count much as I know null about Mac or Apple of that matter.

Hopefully someone will be along with some suggestions, unless you have solved the problem already. If you open up disk utility (go to your hd--> applications --> utilities --> disk utility) you can see what drives are even being recognized.

My first suggestion is that you're attempting to use external hard drives that are powered via usb 2 and your computer only has usb 1.1

Are you plugging your external drives into a power source or are you relying on the computer for the power source?

Solve : Apple mac and zip drive?

Answer»

I have a faulty zip disc which I would like to try to recover data from. However I can't get it to mount on the desktop. Any IDEAS on how I can access it? Sometimes it does appear and suggests I initialise it. If I do this and all data is wiped what are my chances of retrieving data using something like Boomerang?
Would really like to mount the disc though so I can see what I can retrieve.
I use an applemac OSX and the zip drive is separate and run with a USB cable.
Thank you
SueOpen up disk utility (found at hd --> APPLICATIONS --> utilities --> disk utility).

Once open, on the left hand side you should see what drives/disks are recognized. if you click on the zip drive (if you see it), you can then click on "mount." This will attempt to mount the drive.

If you are STILL having issues I'd recommend Drive Genius or something of that SORT to recover the data.

FBNot sure how that applies to anything...SORRY i skimmed over it and it seemed to talk about someone Mac users switching to vista? If not google will help.

FBOh think it's just an article about a MAC user that switched to Vista.Check this out:
http://derekh.com/index.php/2007/03/29/vista-drivers-for-your-mac-macbook-bootcamp-12/

Also, can you directly connect your laptop to your router via Ethernet to download the drivers? Or is your MacBook so far set by Apples poor standards that it doesnt have Ethernet? (All laptops should have Ethernet... even if the plugin is too big for aesthetics) The drivers are on your mac. First, boot into the mac side and do a software update. Mac sure all software is up to date.

Once this is done, open up boot camp assistant (applications--> utilities--> boot camp assistant).

When you go through the assistant it should ask you if you want to burn a drivers cd for vista. If you chose "no," then you'd be in your CURRENT situation.

Solve : Computer recognizes iPod touch as camera?

Answer»

Whenever i plugin my ipod it appears as a camera and won't show up in "my computer" under hard drives or devices with removable storage. I"m running windows xp and I just installed service pack 3, so i'm assuming my usb drivers are updated. Any SUGGESTIONS?Your iPod Touch will be recognized as a camera if you have images in the photo gallery.
It will not show up in My Computer as a removable storage device.
You MUST use iTunes to access it.

I assume you're a new Apple user?Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on APRIL 12, 2010, 07:58:58 PM

You must use iTunes to access it.

http://www.getsharepod.com/ *Must use an itunes-like program. True. Also when iTunes updates it will block SharePod so you have to wait a few days for the developer to figure out the new block and release the new version.

But for backing up your MUSIC it's about the fastest thing I've found.

Solve : Apple/Setting up Macintosh Time Machine?

Answer»

Apple / Setting up Macintosh Time Machine on: April 29, 2010, 03:17:52 PM
Being a newbie to Mac, and TRYING to SET up Time Machine to back up files, etc, I am floundering. When I click on the time machine icon, I get a window that says "a storage location for Time Machine backups isn't set up. So I click on the option to choose a storage location. Then I get a window that shows an "off/on" switch and "choose backup disk." The switch is in the off position. There are 2 choices, switch it to the "on" position or click on "choose backup disk." With both selections I am taken to another window that is blank except for a section to click on at the bottom that says "set up time capsule." When I click on that another window pops up that says "searching for airport wireless devices." Then it is unable to FIND wireless devices because I have none. A vicious circle.Do you have an external drive to use as your Time Machine backup?Yes. I have also FOUND that if I click on TM in the top of the screen it shows Time Machine Not Configured, (but is not highlighted which tells me it is configured), Browse other TM disks and when I do this I go to another window that says "these disks contain TM backups. Choose the disk you want to use with TM. There is a blank screen, no choices, Open TM system preferences. Opening system preferences takes me back to the original problem.
Also when I click and hold on TM in the dashboard choices are TM preferences, Back up now, (a few days ago I clicked on Back up now and I GOT another message that said I have not backed up my files for 147 days, lately it says TM error, no backup volume has been selected, to select a backup volume open System Preferences and choose TM, the Mac was purchased in Oct of 09), Browse other TM disks, Remove from Dock, Show TM. That's the latest. Quote from: jekyll on May 19, 2010, 03:03:02 PM

If you do NOT have a TIME CAPSULE then I assume you have a wired router/wireless router? What kind of router do you have? If you do not have a time capsule then you will need an external hard drive to use as your backups. So once you get a USB external hard drive just plug it in to your computer then click time machine on and choose the new hard drive as your backup.

Solve : iTunes clipping/skipping during playback?

Answer»

I replaced the IDE cable and defragged the hard-drive.

The drive is still relatively slow and in PIO mode.

One thing I noticed is that the CR/ROM drive has it's jumper (after I spent some time reading what a jumper was) set to CS (for Cable Select?) and the "E" drive is set to "Slave". Should one of these be set to "Master"? If so, which one? Or is this really not an issue or the cause of my issues?

Once again, the advice is enormously appreciated. As annoying as this has been for me, I've learned quite a bit about my computer, and I THANK you guys for helping out.

Cheers and Happy New Year!Quote from: tank03 on December 31, 2008, 11:13:02 AM

Ahh, that's a interesting tidbit; now we have something else to try.

"Cable Select" is usually set on both drives to configure them to assign themselves to master/slave based on their positions on the cable. The end would become master, and the middle would be Slave.

Try setting the CD-ROM drive to Master via the jumper, and see if that MAKES any difference.

you're quite welcome. Personally, I've done the most learning in times of peril. (HD crashes) or my famous, "hmm, I wonder if it will go faster if I turn the power cable around". a loud sizzling noise, the breaker being tripped, and a smokey smell later, I discovered that it didn't.Well, I've set the jumper on the CD/ROM to master and ensured the hardrive was set to slave and there has been no change.

Additionally, I've tried all the recommedations found at the WesternDigital support site (i.e. uninstall drivers and reboot, ensure running XP service pack 3) without success.

I'm at a loss as to what to do next. Perhaps there is no solution to my problem and it's time to pack it in?

If anyone has anything further to suggest I'd be interested, but I'm starting to think that this may be beyond my meager abilties to solve.

I think I may have solved the problem.

In the interest of exploring and learning about how my machine operates, I entered the BIOS mode (never done that before) at startup and found various settings for the drives. I noticed that on drive channel 2 the master was set to "CD/ROM" and the slave was set to "Off". Taking a chance I set it to "Auto" and returned to Normal mode.

When I checked the properties of the IDE secondary channel using the Device Manager I noticed the current tranfer mode for the "E" drive changed from "PIO" to "UDMA 5".

I haven't yet tried the iTunes, but my "E" drive is now significantly faster than it ever was before. It's the performance I was expecting , but never got, when I first had it installed.

Everything seems OK to me, but does anyone thinnk my solution may prove to be a bad idea in the long run? Is there a reason it was set-up as it was previously? Admittedly, I'm just poking around in the dark as I have no idea what any of these things really do so if you think I'm causing more harm then good, please let me know.

In the meantime, I'm off to test my iTunes and see how that runs. I'll report back my findings.

Again, many thanks to those who have offered advice. It was greatly appreciated.hooray! looks like you fixed it

the reason it was set was probably simply because the folks that installed it for you were slacking off. I LOVE their little spin-up excuse though, since hard drives spin up the moment they get power (power management options notwithstanding).

Good sleuthing in the BIOS to solve your issue, though.

Not sure what the setting would mean, but if I had to guess I'd say the BIOS was basically treating it as a CD-ROM drive; why it wouldn't use a UDMA mode for a CD-ROM drive I haven't a clue.

It's nice to see threads have a happy ending I'm exceptionally happy to report that everything (including the iTunes) is working flawlessly.

Apparently, that channel needed to be "turned on" via BIOS.

Thanks for all the help, I've learned quite alot this past week.

Cheers!Hi, I'm also having this problem. I checked for answers on the Apple help forum and the only suggestion was to wait for a newer version.

I am running the most recent version of iTunes on Windows 7 Ultimate 64x, on a computer with 2gig of RAM. I assume my sound driver is up to date as I just recently reinstalled my OS.
I don't get this issue with Windows Media Player or any other media player on my computer. It also happens when I plug in SPEAKERS so yeah definitely iTunes.

I can't remember when I started having this issue, but I think it's only recently or I would've noticed earlier and done something about it. Perhaps it's the LATEST version of iTunes?

Solve : MacDell?

Answer»

I have much experience with mac's os on pc hardware as well as windows on mac's.

First: According to Apple's license agreement (for their os), you can only install the software on an "apple branded" computer. Most people get around this by throwing an apple sticker on the machine and call it good. Whether this would hold up legally or not I'm not sure.

Second: Because mac's os was written to work with CERTAIN hardware drivers, having mac's os work with your pc hardware is very iffy (completely depends on the computer and your abilities). Some people have managed to get working drivers for everything on their pc, while others are still searching for ways to get their wireless card working, etc.

Third: Boot Camp is a good option for INSTALLING windows on an INTEL Mac. This is NOT an emulator, but more of a bootloader with drivers for windows (xp or vista). Once you have it installed it runs natively, utilizing all hardware on your mac. The downside to this is having to reboot every time you want to switch OPERATING systems. This is where parallels is a great option.i dont think a mac sticker COUNTS... see i was right for once!!! it is illeagle!no it's illegal. I don't think sick birds have anything to do with macs. You may think that it sounds ridiculous but there are multiple websites out there with instructions and faqs on how to setup your pc with apple's OS and they are getting away with it for now due to the controversy of the "apple branded" computer.

Solve : 120 GB iPod - Windows Write Failure?

Answer»

I bought a 120 gb iPod about 3 weeks ago and have had nothing but problems. Every times I TRY to sync it, it says -

Delayed Write Failed
WINDOWS was unable to save all the data for the file x. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or NETWORK connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

I have had a 30 gb iPod for years and this NEVER happened.

I have restored it 20 times
I have tried it in other USB ports
I have tried other iPod USB cords
I have defraged the HD
I have tried to restore the computer
I have tried uninstalled the DRIVER
I have reinstalled the driver
I have opened iTunes first, the the iPod
I have checked the antivirus and the firewall

I have uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it and it worked for a week or so, but now it won't sync again.

Some say it could be the HD, but I have been able to burn DVDs, use flash drives, and SD slots, and they did not show a write error.

I have tried to sync it with another computer and it works. I have used it in my car, home stereo, and personal use, and it works. So, I don't think it is the iPod. ??

I have Windows XP - Service Pack 3, and I connect to the USB slot on the computer.

PLEASE HELP! Honestly, you've done about as much troubleshooting as is needed for this situation.

What I would do:

Go to your local apple store. Since it's a new iPod it's under warranty and they will fix any issues for free (assuming the ipod wasn't dropped and dented or something like that).

If you go to apple.com/retail and then look up your local store you can actually sign up for the appointment before you go (it's called the "Genius Bar").

If your computer is a laptop I highly recommend bringing that in as well. Tell them exactly what you said here (what you've tried, what the symptoms are) and they'll be able to find the issue for you.

Solve : Will downloading to an ext. hard drive make my computer get a virus??

Answer»

If i hook an ext. Hard drive up to download music and I get a bad file, will the virus effect my COMPUTER or just the ext. hard drive? Cause I bought an expensive macbook pro and dont want to RUIN it like I did my old pc by downloading, but I still need my tunes. Thanks for the helpNot sure, but I think Itunes is safe.

However, downloading viruses, to your computer or another hard drive is always dangerous.

Where exactly are you downloading from?i would likely be downloading torrents. usually from mininova. not itunesNot all torrents contain viruses, but most of them do.
If you don't run them, it is unlikely they will INFECT your computer. It's very unlikely you'll have any virus issues though on your MBP as most of the viruses included with torrents are written for Windows, not for Mac's OS.

It never hurts though to have an antivirus solution just in case.Unless they are downloading mac software VIA torrent. Torrents of Mac software would likely also (if infected) have mac-specific malware.

If they are downloading windows-oriented software, they will likely not infect their macbook pro- but whatever Windows machine they end up using the torrent contents on could be at risk. That's true, although much more unlikely than windows torrents. I've been using torrents on a no-antivirus mac now for 3 years without any issues.

I will agree though that it's much more likely that you'd have a mac virus attached to a mac torrent VERSUS a windows torrent having a mac virus.

Solve : Ipod 6G TV Out?

Answer»

Hey

I've got an 80gb sixth generation ipod, and I thought I'd try connecting it to the TV. Yes I realise that it requires the special TV accessory.

However, I happened to have a USB to composite cable, and a USB female to female adapter (pics below). So what i tried was to connect it together with the ipod charger and see if - just on a long shot - it would allow me to send it to the tv. Now it didn't work, but i just wanted to see if it has to do with the wrong cable, or just a "broken" cable.

Has anyone happened to have tried ANYTHING like this, or know if there's a specific REASON why it wouldn't work?

I figure the problem has to do with the fact that the usb charger is meant as a charger, but i had just figured it's just a cable, it should still be able to transmit the DATA. What do you guys THINK?

Thanks

[Saving space - attachment deleted by admin]The issue isn't that the cable isn't capable of doing what you're trying to do. The issue is that the iPod isn't meant to send that signal through the cord you have.

Unfortunately, your only option is to buy a video cord meant to go from your iPod to your TV.

There are plenty of them out there though, and you can always look on EBAY for used ones.

Take the computer, and a legal signed receipt from the store showing that she is the legal owner, and details of the previous legal owner, and some cash, to a proper Apple store and maybe they will sort it out.

Or ask this "store" for your money back. If the Mac was legally theirs, they would have the password.

Or ask the police to help you. It may be stolen.

Regarding these stories, the more elaborate the lead-in to the "no password" part, the LESS likely I am to believe them. Mind you, I don't believe any of them anyway.

Solve : How to import MP3 into Itunes and Ipod?

Please don't bother with posting if you have no idea what you're talking about.

CUERVO,
iTunes and iPod are fully capable of handling MP3's. In fact, it is the only format I use. How EXACTLY are you trying to import the MP3 you downloaded? Are you getting an error message or is the MP3 showing up in your library as gray? Have you tried simply clicking on the file and DRAGGING it and dropping it into your iTunes library?

Also, keep in mind that when you add files to your playlist, you don't use the Import feature. You are actually supposed to go to File > Add File to Library. If this isn't what you are doing, give it a try.

I type in sudo -s and immediately get the request for my password but then it does not allow me to type it in - curser just stays put. What am I doing wrong? It seems to me that your ISSUE is that you're using the SWITCH ("-s") which tells sudo to use the already logged in user's credentials.

It might help if you tell us what exactly you're TRYING to do.Thanks - I got it SOLVED. If you don't mind, would you please post your solution here in case anyone else has a similar issue to yours?
