Solve : Looking for help with printer driver?

Answer»

Hi,
Bought a new mac which I love. Had a HP laserjet printer that I WANTED to keep using. Tried to install the driver, didn't work. Now somebody gave me another driver that works apparently however, my mac won't install it since it says that I already have a driver (a newer VERSION) installed. I want to disinstall the driver to install the one that will supposedly work. However, can find out how to disinstall the FIRST driver. Can anybody help?
Thanks
M.It's actually called Uninstall.

I'm not really sure with Macs, but I found this:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00270665&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=&product=79502&rule=7437Great! Thanks a lot! Did it work?Don't know yet! It's on my computer at home and I'm at work. I'll try it tonight and let you know.
Thanks again.
M.All right. Does not work! Can't seem to find it and my system is not the one on the HP page. I have OS 10.5.6
Help!
M.here's what you need to do.

Go to system preferences (apple logo in top left corner --> system preferences).

Go to "Print & Fax"

You will see the printers on the left hand side.
Click on the one you want to delete so it's highlighted, then click on the "-" sign in the bottom left corner.

Just to be safe I'd also go to your applications FOLDER (click on finder, then go to applications) and find the Hewlett-Packard folder and delete it.

Then use your installer.

BTW- a good way to know you are using the correct driver is to download it directly from HP's website. If you go there you can choose Mac OS X as your operating system and then download the software for OS 10.5 and you'll be set.

Please let us know what your results are.

Solve : windows xp and itunes download error win32 not valid app?

Answer»

I am sure we are not the only ones, but we get the 'not a valid win32 application' when trying to LOAD the itunes software for a new ipod. Any suggestions?Have you tried downloading iTunes from the Apple website?
Download iTunes here:
http://filehippo.com/download_itunes/

Also, have you tried just using another program? If you have Windows Media Player, I would just use that. Apple is overly controlling over their software, and they will change the format of your music, and they participate in something called "Digital Rights Media", (or DRM,) which basically protects you from copyrighting your music, and controls what devices it will be able to play on... in a SENSE at least.

But, some people like iTunes, and more power to them...Actually, iTunes will not change the format of your music.

You are thinking of the AAC format, which is mp4. By default iTunes will import your NEW music as aac, UNLESS you change the format to whatever your preference is. Why does it do this? AAC (and the setting it's set at) is a higher quality than your default mp3 (128 kbps or 160 kbps usually).

I should also mention that any mp3s that are brought into iTunes will remain mp3's by default. You can, if you'd like, set up iTunes to automatically organize your music. If you do this, it will then copy any music you import in to the iTunes folder (of your choice) and convert them to whatever your preference was set to for the music format.

Windows Media Player does the exact same thing, except without the benefits. It converts (by default) any new music to .WMA... which can ONLY be used with windows media player (unless you download some plugin or 3rd party app). It also doesn't make the quality of the music better than a 160 kbps mp3. socrates, by "new music" you mean when you rip it from a CD, correct?

AAC is a lossless format too, though, I believe, so it's bound to be higher quality.Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 08, 2009, 03:21:48 PM

Yes, I'm referring to music ripped from a CD. Music that is "new" as in new to the digital world. If you take mp3s and throw them into itunes you'd still have mp3's, unless you chose the OPTION I was mentioning before about having iTunes make a copy of all imported music.

You are also correct in that AAC is a lossless format, so it is higher quality.

Solve : Top Menu Bar is not active?

Answer»

When I click on the apple no menu is not ACTIVE or any of the other item on the menu bar. Not being able to shut down or exit. Do I need to reinstall OS X? if what should I do? OjasIf you PRESS command (the apple key), option, and escape all at the same time it'll bring up a "force QUIT" window.

Click on Finder and choose restart. It will then restart finder and you should be able to click on the apple and go to shutdown.

Worst case scenario: if you can't GET it to work just press and hold the power button on the pc for 5-10 seconds and it'll shutdown. You can then turn it back on.

Solve : best system cleaner for mac?

Answer»

I am a PC user and I love the nCleaner system cleaner. It works like a charm. My father's a Mac user and is in need of a GOOD cleaner for his system. What do you all recommend?
ThanksI've never found a need for one on my mac, nor have I ever had a mac user ever need one (I used to work as a tech at apple and am now an apple systems admin).

Are you sure this is what he needs, and that his problems are related to something else?I was thinking that maybe that is what I needed. I am not a computer pro. I bought a mac last YEAR, have always had pc. I like it but it has BEGUN to freeze up sometimes, respond slowly, it acts like a pc full of junk. I don't KNOW how to compress the files, defrag, clean up or anything...i just here that you never have to. So I'm asking how do I know what's wrong with it? I'm no apple expert, but you could try reinstalling the OS from your system disk, after BACKING up your valuable data.

Solve : Help with Airport Extreme Wireless router!?!?

Answer»

Hello. I recently bought an Apple Airport Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi and also bought a Wireless 802.11b/g Turbo Mode High-Gain USB Adapter so my computer could have wireless internet. I installed all the software FINE. When I turn on the Airport Extreme it flashes amber for about 2 minutes, the internet works on my Windows XP PC and my Apple iPod touch for these two minutes. When the Airport Extreme light turns GREEN however, the PC and the Itouch lose the internet CONNECTION. I rang Apple Support and they said it was a problem with my PC, but if it was then why would my iPod touch also lose the internet connection? Please help.

If you have a solution to this problem, could someone 'spoon feed' me how to do it becuase I am completely computer illiterate and don't understand COMPUTERS at all! lol

P.S. I cannot create a network yet because my Airport Extreme loses connection before I can do so

Solve : Why do I want to pay $1099-$1999 for a stupid Mac-?

Answer»

Why do I want to pay $1099-$1999 for a stupid Mac-Book.
SERIOUSLY, I could pay a much more affordable $512 for a laptop with Windows XP and more.
AND ITS GOT EXPANSIONS!
As opposed to the always freezing MacBook with its crappyness. (If only that were a word!)

Apple claims to donate laptops to schools. Why is my school still filled with old smelly (not really) computers? (Not that I would want a Mac anyways)

AND WHATS THIS ABOUT PAYING $1099+ FOR AN EASY TO HACK APPLE LAPTOP?!?!!Please don't tease the animals. Order about 5 back issues of MacAddict and you'll find all kinds of stuff relateing to protecting your mac. Also I would not trust running windows XP natviely on my mac even if bill gates came to my house and said it was safe himself. Use an emulator to run windows on Mac instaid.Quote

Is the emulator free? If so, can I have a link? And why exactly would you pay Apple hardware prices to run Windows? I never did get that ONE.... Quote
And why exactly would you pay Apple hardware prices to run Windows? I never did get that one....
Because I was given a Maggot, I mean, Mac.
Now I want to use that Mac as a Windows computer, thus, I want an emulator.Mac's are amazing, running Windows on them is a rediculous idea though.Oxymoron? I must disagree with you, ParadoX...

(I think you have been tracking me on CH)

Macs just are not capable of what they should be. I mean, they cant right click without you pressing Command first...

And when they freeze, you had better hope its not a MacBook, or you are going to have a jolly fun time ripping it open to remove the battery...

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7148748849652085555&q=MAc

I have a Mac... so I know. When mine freezes because I decided to save my document, it automatically thinks that I need to loose it, and freezes up on me. So I press Command, Cloverleaf/Apple, and ESC... Its like "Ending this application may cause your computer to freeze" but its already frozen! So no matter which button I click, OK or Cancel, its going to freeze.
(Pressing OK or Cancel, whatever day it is...)
And nothing happens. Its frozen. I cant even enter the Debugger. So I press the restart combo, and nothing happens. So then I feel like I am dieing. And I press the power button. Nothing happens. So I hold the power button down, nothing happens. And then I have to get up and unplug the dang thing. All my open application's data is gone, and I loose my document...

That's why I stick with my trusty Win 3.1 Laptop, Windows 95 Laptop, Windows 95 PC, My other Windows 98 PC, my good Windows 98 PC, and my other XP (and the XP I am using right now) and I just leave the Mac out of everything...
Besides, Macs have a problem with ThirdParty software...Quote

YAY! SOMEONE agrees with me!

I know that Macs do have their good sides:
Video Editing, Image Editing (Though my PC can do just as fine of a job)
But my PC just seems to do much more.

That and its VERY difficult to program for the Macintosh. You try porting your own application from PC to Mac format and show me the results....Macs are far too expensive. You can get the hardware for half the price and Linux for free..

Ofcourse, if you want an crappy limp dicked one button mouse and a way too trendy queer keyboard you'll have to pay extra.Quote

(Thankyou!!!) Thankyou!!!
(repeat 5,000,000,000 times)Hi,

Not to take side on Mac or Windows (oh, and one Linux box.) Because I use both, I can clearly tell the different between the two. One day, soon after you get your Windows machine, you will see all kinds of virus, and you start to go bold and want to throw your Windows machine out of the window, you will find out the beauty of the Mac. At work, I take CARE of 13 machines, the Windows machine are running almost flawless but it's because I do virus scan, adware scan, spyware scan on all Windows machines every single day, but the Macs, I hardly have to do anything, once setup, that's it. I don't remember when the last time was when I did house cleaning for the Macs.

MacPCI have no spyware nor viruses on any of the windows machines I work with and I have no headaches from them either. They all run and do as they're supposed to.

And the good thing is that I didn't have to go out of my way to buy over priced Macintosh hardware/software that doesn't allow for any type of configuration at all. And I can actually use a mosue with more than one button! HAH!

Solve : Powerbook G 4 will not connect to wireless home router?

Answer»

My WIFE just acquired a powerbook G 4. It will not connect to our wireless router? message says cannot find server. What kind of router are you USING?

Are you sure that the Mac WiFi DEVICE is compatible with the WiFi router?
The specifications for the router and for the wifi device should say something like:
802.1 G, Wireless G, Wireless A, B, Draft N, N... (Many variants, but, all end in the same result)

Have you tried unplugging the WiFi router for 10 seconds, and plugging it in again? After this, restart the computer (since I dont know how else to reset the IP on the Mac) and reconnect to the network.
Are you sure the router is set up with WiFi?
Can you plug directly into the router and see if it works fine?

Not sure how you release and renew an IP address in Mac... I think on my old Mac, you did it though Internet Explorer... check the Safari settings for network settings, and see if it can either;
A. Detect and repair connection problems
B. Renew IP addressQuote from: ZYLSTRA on February 03, 2009, 10:05:59 PM

Solve : Angry jump drives: PC to Mac-drive not recognized?

Answer»

Ok..pulling my hair out here..so before I get involved in the problem, let me tell you what I am doing and what I have.

I have Software for a Mac that I have on my PC. I want to either burn that onto a DVD or throw it on a jump drive to transfer to the Mac. Problem is none of my jump drives are recognized on the Mac.

What I have:
1.) My laptop is running vista 64-bit
2.) jump drives (I've tried both jump drives and flash USB) formatted to NTSF, FAT32- non of which worked on the Mac

Friends Mac:
1.) running OSX 10.2.8
2.) when I plug my jump drive into the mac, it says it has a volume that the OSx can not read.
3.) Tried to partition the jump drive on the Mac with the OSx drivers, but them my PC will not recognize it.

DVD:
I burned the SW apps for the Mac using my PC. DVD shows up FINE on all PC's in the art studio. Put the DVD into a Mac and it sits there and does not recognize it.

I never had this problem a few years ago. We all swapped jump drives between macs and PC with absolutly no problems.

What has changed and how do we fix this? There has to be a way to put information on a DVD/jump drive on my PC and have the Mac recognize it.

Any help/thoughts WOULD be great!
Thanks!Mac OS X will read and write to FAT 16 and FAT 32, and can only read from, but not write to NTFS volumes. It would be best to format the jump drive to FAT32 on the Windows PC, doing a full (not quick) format. Just in case you did a quick format.I tried them both. The mac still will not pull it up. It tells me that it sees a vilur that it can not read and wants to format it with MAc

Again, here are the steps I've taken:
1.)On the PC, I've formatted the jump drive to FAT 23
2.) wait 10 minutes for the slow thing to format
3.)plug the USB jump drive into the mac
4.) See intsantly the warning telling me that the drive is not recognized by the mac osx
5.) only otions are to ignore (which does nothing for the situation) or partition the unrecognized volume with the mac osx drivers (in which renders the drive useless to my PC)

I've tried three DIFFERENT drives, 4 thumb drives, 2 macs (my wife also has a mac) and tried this on 5 PC computers
The results have all been the same

Couple of questions please:
1> Have you tried formatting these jump drives on a PC other than the Vista 64bit?
Shouldn't be a concern but I'm not a Vista expert. I would try that if you haven't. You never know.
2> Have you tried formatting a jump drive on the MAC and taking it to the other MAC to verify
there is no issue with the MACs reading jump drives.
3> You tried 4 drives on 5 PCs? All format by the Vista 64bit OS?
4> Are you sure you are virus / spyware free?
Just trying to get a feel for the issue. Trying to find the one common DENOMINATOR here.

Problem fixed.

What I had to do is format the jump drive on the Mac, choosing format type ms-dos OPERATING system. It shows up now on the mac and the PC and I can see files now.

All my drives I have formatted using a PC at some point in time. This works fine for PC;s, but the mac's do not like this at all.

Would anyone know why this is? I've used jumps drives many times with mac's and pc's with no issues. It's only when I do a full format using the PC is when they stop working on the mac's.

Thinking back, this is the common denominator: All the drives worked great BEFORE I formatted them (My jump drives and USB sticks I usually format once and awhile if they start to get flak)

Crazy computer world we live in.. Thanks for all the input!!And to answer the above questions:
1.) Tried this with win xp
2.) Mac has no issues seeing the drive when I format it using the mac
3.) Tried formatiing using both visa 32- bit, 64 bit and win XP
4.) No bugs/virus'

The only thing i can think of is windows is blowing away something the mac needs to see in the main volume header. formatting the drive on the mac using the option ms-dos operating system, seems to put this information back.
Well glad to hear that everything is OK now. I'm not a MAC guy by any stretch, but choosing format type ms-dos operating system on the MAC sounds like FAT16 to me. Like I said before, Mac OS X should read and write to FAT 16 and FAT 32, and can only read from, but not write to NTFS volumes. FAT32 should have worked on all the drives and PCs involved. It still would be worth investigating even though for now you have achieved your goal.
Persistence, as on your part with this problem, always pays off.
The trick is to calmly try everything BEFORE you pull all your hair out.
Me, I end up grinding my teeth. I have only nubs left. If you ever figure it out drop me a line. Always curious.
If I had to guess, it's on the MAC side.

Solve : Outlook for MAC - sent items disappeared?

Answer»

I have an ongoing Office 365 subscription.
On my iMAC (High Sierra) I am using Outlook but suddenly all my sent items disappeared.

Recently our email server changed so I had to change the settings to make sure I could still send/receive from the MAC.
It LOOKS like this somehow caused the damage! (or it could be a coincidence?). Anyway, all the OLD sent emails have disappeared.
However, when I now send an email from the Mac it does stay in the sent items.

I also changed the settings on my PC and that had no effect on the sent items on the PC.

Actually this iMac belongs to my better half, and she is not best pleased about losing the sent items emails, as so MANY were very important.

I am not really a Mac USER so I do not know where to start with this
Can anyone help pleaseI know what has happened here...

On my PC outlook is set as a POP account.
On the iMac outlook is set as an IMAP account.

So since the server changed, everything on the iMac was lost

I wish our provider had asked me the right questions when he said do I need any of the old emails!
Big lesson learnt here.Thank you Kerry for posting the solution, good to know you sorted it

Solve : Apple driver is missing?

Answer»

Hello everyone !

Ever since I updated my iTunes and my iPhone and iPad software, My laptop stopped recognising my devices.
My laptop has Windows 10 64bit operating system.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the new version iTunes 12.10.2 many times. I followed the correct order of the procedure as recommended by Apple.
I restarted the Apple Mobile Device service but this didn't solve the PROBLEM.
I REALISED that the Apple UBS DRIVER is missing from my Device Manager. ( as you can see in the Photo).
I tried to install it manually but again this was not helpful.
Then I uninstall this version of iTunes and downloaded an older ONE ( iTunes 12.4.3.1). Again the driver still hasn't been installed.

I don't know what is the problem. I SEARCHED the internet and tried all the tricks. Could you please help me tackle this problem. I really need to backup my iPad.

Thank you.

Solve : Why is backup on I-cloud so difficult.?

Answer»

I just had to PURCHASE the 50GB option for my wife's iPhone SE. My wife's iPhone is trying to back up almost 9 GB of data. I have no idea what is taking up so much space. All I see is a big stupid PURPLE bar that says 8.8 GB of backup. Doesn't tell me what I am backing up. It doesn't allow to selectively REMOVE parts of the backups that are large so that I can reduce the backup footprint. I'm not backing up any photos.

Under Setting --> Apple ID Name --> iCloud --> Manage Storage --> Backups --> Documents and Data = 8.8 GB. When I CLICK on the particular backup --> Choose Data to Back Up the largest item is Facebook at 37.3 MB. Again photos aren't selected.

After the backup completed, I see "No Archives Available" under both bookmarks and contacts under Advance --> Restore section. Did these items actually backup or not?

This is beyond frustrating.

Solve : Fake News. Apple MAC with AMD CPU.?

Answer»

Not true.
See here:
The thinking is that APPLE would commission a semi-custom processor for use in Apple's Macs -- essentially an Apple-defined product that INCORPORATES a substantial amount of AMD's intellectual property (e.g. processor cores, graphics processors, and so on). Here's why that's highly unlikely. Apple wants complete control
https://www.fool.com/investing/2018/04/05/dont-expect-apple-inc-to-use-amd-processors-in-the.aspx
Quote

On April 2, Bloomberg reported that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) intends to eventually transition its Mac computers away from Intel
Don't HOLD your breath.

The rumour that Apple may use AMD processors is based on information from data-mining of macOS Catalina 10.15.4 in a Beta RELEASE that was available last wednesday. (Feb 5th). It was found that the new Beta had a number of AMD Processor Codenames as well as codenames for a few other unreleased AMD processor products, which were not present in previous releases. Thus the rumour RELATED to the possible availability of AMD processors, which seems reasonable to me as a likely reason such AMD-related code-names are present in the codebase.

The link you provided which you seem to feel debunks the rumour is from April of 2018, And only counters a much weaker rumour from that time frame.

Solve : What to do before donating an old iPhone?

Answer»

Before donating an old iPhone, it is NECESSARY to factory reset the iPhone to prevent personal information from revealing. To factory reset iPhone, you can:
1. Go to Settings - General - Reset - Reset All Content and Settings.
2. Connect the iPhone to iTunes to restore it or put the iPhone into recovery mode FIRST and then restore it with iTunes.
3. Besides, using a TOOL called Joyoshare iPasscode Unlocker is also workable. This tool can factory reset any iOS device without any trouble. Even if you want to completely reset an iPhone without knowing PASSCODE, it can also help you out.

Remember, we can't see your computer. What mean buy it moving slow is it's moving slow while importing new cd's i am using a computer with windows xp and since i started using that computer(a month ago) it is a whole lot slower from when i use to use my old vista computer and my vista computer is a piece of junk ,so i don't know why the better pc(the xp one) wouldnt import my songs at a fast speed.First of all, check itunes preferences
(edit, preferences, advanced, importing) and check to make sure your cd/dvd drive is set to your preferred speed (I'm assuming you want max).

Second, are you sure this drive is capable of doing faster? Was this the same drive as what was in the vista pc?Quote from: socrates on January 23, 2008, 01:49:51 PM

It's normally plastered all over the tray, or on the box, or in the manual, or on the website.

Have you CHECKED the Preferences PAGE to see what speed the burner is set to burn within iTunes, as was suggested a few posts ago?Quote from: SID on January 24, 2008, 04:04:42 PM

Solve : Ipod touch applications?

Answer»

I really wanna ADD more applications, such as games etc. But I don't KNOW how! I went to apple.com and it said if theres an app I like, I have to tap the + button. I did and it just said add as a book mark :/... Someone please teach me how to download applications, illegaly or legally don't care!We cant help you put things on it illegally
Which, unfortunately, is the only way you would probably be able to.

Apple has this strange like for closing up their systems and preventing users from putting non-apple software on it. This is what they like to call: "Security protection"

If you go here:
http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/
Down at the bottom left side of the page, Apple does have some software that they made that you can put on to your iPod touch.

The rumor is that they're working on an SDK, allowing people to create applications for the ipod touch.

They are already working on the SDK for the iPhone, so I really doubt they wouldn't allow it to go to the iPod touch.

What you're referring to arsenal is the new ability to add WEBSITES onto the iPod touch's main SCREEN... not applications.

Solve : Burning a cd?

Answer»

Can I burn a cd without having to upload it to an iTunes LIBRARY. And if so, how? Thanks! Do you mean burn a cd as in create your own cd, or do you mean RIP a cd, as in save the contents to your computer?

Furthermore, I realize you posted in the apple forum, but are you on Mac's OS, or are you on windows? If you're on Mac OS, tell me what version you're using, so I can tell you what you are or aren't able to do. (If you don't know, click on the apple in the top left, then click on "about this mac." It should SAY Mac OS X Version 10.X.X.
a) burn a cd like make a copy of a music cd. I know I can download it to iTunes and then burn the playlist to a CD but I was just WONDERING if there was an easier way.

b) I'm running Mac OS LeopardThe iTunes way is pretty darn easy.. Click import, then click burn.

However, if you're LOOKING for a program that makes copies of cd's (just PUT in cd, hit burn, and then put in blank one once it's done saving to the hard drive), there are plenty out there.

I myself use Roxio's Toast, but it's a full-function burning suite that you might not need (it's around $90). However, there are much cheaper ones that'll do the same thing. Just do a google search for cd burning mac.Are you even talking about burning a music cd?

If your talking about just burning a data cd. Just right click or apple click the desktop and create a burn folder. Shove everything in it and hit the burn button.Quote from: geissap on February 29, 2008, 12:29:11 PM

If your talking about just burning a data cd. Just right click or apple click the desktop and create a burn folder. Shove everything in it and hit the burn button.

exactly. If you're not actually trying to do a music cd, and just looking to do data... this is the easiest way to go. FYI, you don't have to right click or apple click, you can click File --> New burn folder, and continue with the rest of geissap's advice.

Solve : HELP! OS 8.6?

Answer»

Hi All,
I am not familiar with apple at all. I need to get some information off of an old power mac G3. I have tried using a jump drive but figured out they only work with OS X or later. I do not have a floppy drive that works with this COMPUTER, so the only think I can think of is to e-mail the information to myself. I can connect to the internet but I am not able to get onto my hotmail account, also I have tried setting up Outlook with a different account but can not send or recieve any e-mails through that. This computer also has access to a network, but I am not sure how to get onto the network. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thanks! Why are you not able to get to your hotmail account? You need to give more information. Is the page timing out? Are you receiving an error message?I will go to www.hotmail.com and the screen will just stay blank and nothing will load, so i'm assuming it is timing out? I am not receiving an error message at allis it just hotmail.com that's doing that, or is it all websites? I know you said you can connect to the internet, but I want to be sure we're on the same page.Yes I can connect to the internet, i have tried hotmail.com and my SCHOOLS website neither of them work. I went to google, which works and I searched for hotmail and the search WORKED and when I clicked on hotmail, the same blank page came up.Sounds like you might be missing a component for your browser that's needed... but I wouldn't know for sure as I refuse to use hotmail.

What browser are you using? Also, what version is the browser? It sounds like the cache should be cleared out.

(I cant recall off the top of my head how to do that.. unfortunately)

So, lets LOOK at one last thing that should also be considered:
Are you using the Classic version of MSN Hotmail? Or are you using the new "upgraded" version?

The older version, though it still works, will send you into a neverending redirect occasionally. This could be the problem as well. (Which, clearing the cache should help)
I am not sure what you mean about what version of hotmail I am using, I have just tried to got to www.hotmail.com and get into it, and the web page won't even load. I have also tried to get into my school e-mail account and my schools home page won't load either.
I am not 100% sure what version of internet explorer I am using and I am not in town to look to that computer right now, but I do know that it is a pretty old version of explorer.

The reason that I need to get into some form of e-mail is because I need to transfer files from my mac to another computer, I don't have a cd burner on the mac and the floppy drive doesn't work. There is also a network that I can connect to but I do not know how to do that either, because as I said before I don't know anything about macs.If you're using IE, I believe the way to clear out the cache is under edit --> preferences. Look around in there for "delete temporary files," or something of that nature, and that should take care of your issue.

Very interesting video about pricing information you might want to know. Most computer PRODUCTS are made in Asia, which is MUCH closer to Australia than it is to the United States. So it probably is not transportation COSTS. My Macbook pro which I purchased for TRAVELING and conferencing needs did cost some $2,199 AU in Sydney store 6 months ago.

Solve : Deleted folders on Mac OSX Jaguar?

Answer»

I have a Mac powerbook G4 with the OLD OSX Jaguar operating system. I accidentally deleted some folders in the Applications section thinking they were nothing important but soon realized my mistake. Now, when I click on the System Preferences nothing happens and now I can't set the Date and Time. HELP! FrankDid you check the trash bin?

Do you happen to use any backup software? If so, restore from the backup prior to when this happened.

You MAY need to reinstall the entire operating system, once a file is deleted in the Mac OS, you can not get them back. Do you know what file(s) you deleted from the application folder?

Also, have you TRIED some of the simple steps like rebooting and then trying system preferences again?

Removing something from the application folder should not have affected your date & time or your system preferences. I could see you having some issues if you deleted some of the utilities in applications/utilities... but it still shouldn't cause what you're claiming.

Solve : Windows Media for Leopard?

Answer»

I need to be able to watch window media videos online through Safari, but I can't find a plug-in for Leopard. I downloaded Flip4Mac, but I still can't watch videos. I read the majority of the pdf and how to watch videos in the browser by turning off the SUPPORT, but that didn't work either. What am I doing WRONG? I need the plug in for school! I appreciate all the help! Do you have the newest version of FlipMac?
(Download it here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=915d874d-d747-4180-a400-5f06b1b5e559&DisplayLang=en )
Microsoft is no longer going through the [painful] process of developing WMP for the Macintosh, and therefor, it will be more difficult to use WMV/WMA files.

Have you tried opening videos in FireFox?
(www.firefox.com)I have already downloaded the latest version of Flip4mac.. I rather not have to download firefox, but if I have to I will.

The other solution would be to re-install Safari, if thats possible. It may be a plugins association that is causing the problem. If you reinstall Safari, as well as Flip4Mac, it should correct the issue. How do I reinstall Safari?

I'm going to go try Firefox, and if that doesn't work I'll try reinstall everything. I might have messed up, after all I am new to this! It comes up blank in firefox... but I can download the file and watch it but I just can't watch it in the browser Frankly I did do the courage to try installing it on my Macbook but it instead HURT my Rhub turbomeeting functionings. That was the day I last try this pc - mac combination...Sorry, I would have responded but I've been out of TOWN for the past couple of weeks.

I highly, highly recommend DOWNLOADING a free plugin called Perian. It's a great utility that allowed me to play almost all video formats in quicktime.

Try removing and reinstalling flip4mac (make sure you have the latest version), and then install perian (just for your other video formats).

let us know how it goes!I forgot to mention that they not too long ago released the correct version of flip4mac for leopard. http://www.macworld.com/article/131280/2007/12/flip4mac.html

If you had tiger or an older OS and then upgraded to leopard, chances are you have the wrong version of flip4mac. Remove it and install the newest version, and you should be good.

Hi, I have an old Imac G3 (slot loading) and I was MOVING some file around with it in a PC (USING Mac drive) And somehow I managed to mess up the system FOLDER which now needs to be "Re-blessed" however I don't have the OS 9 CD which is needed to do this. Is there anyway to "Re-bless" the system folder without the CD? Or atleast get it to boot up so I can Set the start up DISK?I'm not an os 9 expert by any means, but I believe if you hold option while booting it should allow you to choose what system you want to boot off of.

However, from the way it sounds, you are probably GOING to need your os 9 cd. You could always try ebay for it...?

now wine i am in apple terminal how do i do the same thing.
pls help
i am trying to learn UNIX its defrint.
thanksWait, can you more clearly explain what you're trying to do?
OS X doesn't use drive letters.
You can OPEN Terminal, and type cd /Volumes, then type ls, (WITHOUT the commas, OBVIOUSLY), to see the drives in your system. The boot partition is, obviously, mounted as /
Here's a screenshot.

In the above screenshot, "John" is a CD-ROM.Yes, in UNIX, hard drives and other devices are trated as if they are files, listed in different parts of the directory.

Solve : Copying Music Between iPods?

Answer»

My sister has music on her iPod that she got from a friend's iTunes library. I can obviously see her music when her iPod is connected to my iTunes library. I've been told that on a PC I could open her library folder and manually copy it to my library but I don't know if that is true and if it is how to do it on a Mac. Is there any other way of copying her music off her iPod to my iTunes library without me having to burn a CD of her music and then manually adding it?Unfortunately, this is ILLEGAL to do. You cannot legally share music in this matter.
We cannot assist you in doing this. Burned music is only for personal use, and cannot be shared with a THIRD part or ANYONE else but the person who purchased the COMPUTER. it happened to me when i had a new ipod but a friend told me that i cannot copy a song from other ipod to my itunes library. but i found out that there is a software were you can copy other music from other ipod to your itunes library. try idump. just try it i forgot what the name of the software coz im not using it any more.

Solve : Lost administrator password on Mac?

Answer»

A Japanese friend of my wife's gave her , her old Mac OS computer before she left. The big problem is she said she forgot her password! I have been able to access the Unix language (similar to DOS) and performed all sorts of commands (I got from the internet) to try to get passed the password but no luck! There is a CD in the Mac's drive marked DRIVERS but would be good to have the OS cd.
Has anyone got any good suggestions Thankssorry so late in responding, but you are in ok shape, as LONG as your friend didn't put a master password on the pc.

You need to get your OS install disc, and put it in the drive. Boot to the cd by holding C while starting the computer. It will come up with a menu, looking like it's going to install the OS.

Look at the top, and there's a "utilities" menu. Click on that and click on something like "reset password." It'll reset the admin password with whatever you type, just as long as someone hasn't set a master password.Thank you Socrates for your help. I do not have the original OS install disc. I WONDER if I picked one up on e-Bay if it would do the same trick? Only problem is I am not exactly sure of the version of OS to get. I wonder if I can find this somewhere in the Unix programme I can access in the computer? Is there some command you can enter that will give the version of the OS?
Again I much appreciated your reply
kind regards
HamI'm guesisng there is not a unix command that will tell you the OS version, but if you purchased another OS cd from ebay it'd do the trick.

If you could actually get into mac os you could find out the version, but if that were the case you wouldn't even be needing the os disc.

My recommendation: Bring it in to your local apple store. They should be able to help you as they have various OS versions at the store. They should be able to reset the password for you.

The best part is that it's free to have them help you. just go to apple.com/retail and select your local store's website, and you can sign up for an appointment before going in.Thanks again Socrates, you've given me some good ideas to pursue. I just hope like you said, there is not a master password set on the computer.
Cheers,
HamNo problem. Let me know if you get it working.I just BOUGHT a "Mac OS"CD on E Bay. it's being mailed to me, so may take 4 or 5 days being Saturday tomorrow. Yes, definitely to let you know how it goes, is the minimum I can do for your help plus of course it'll be a useful thread for anyone caught in the same predicament. This computer forum is great!!
Thanks again for keeping in contact,
regards Ham.No problem, Ham. Glad to hear you found a cd to purchase.I got my OS CD TODAY and was attempting to try it out but now there is absolutely no picture on the screen (CRT). I discovered other people had been switching it on and off. Maybe with old age(it's an imac G3 model), the tube has finally blown? I don't know.
It's very frustrating, picking up that OS CD on e Bay only to find now the computer has another major problem - unless easily fixed - I think I'll just quit this little project.
But I'm sure what you say would've worked because I've seen the same advice on the internet. Thanks for your help anyway. That's unfortunate.

Remember, you can always bring it to the apple store and have a Mac Genius look at it for free...

Solve : Help me with my Mac?

Answer»

So here's the story.
My brother in laws mother gave me a mac...a real old school one. It's shaped like a wedge. But ever since I've got it I can't install anything...I don't really know how to, nor does anyone else because we've always been PC people. Everytime I do some bloody error COMES up. It says Authorization in big bold letters and then tells me I can't install this program on the computer. I have no clue what to do, I can't install flash, firefox, nothing.
If someone could please help that would be wonderful!

Cheers
Can you tell us exactly what OS it is? I believe a wedge is not an Operating System....
Also tell us what the full error message is.Hey Novicecutie, Like CD said, it would help a whole lot if you could tell us a few things ie OS, Model Number, and it might help if you asked your bro-in-law to tell you if he had any problems and was the Mac in good running order when he gave it to you.

If it is a model made before Steve Job left the company and then came back it may still have "forever call in tech support" which was ordered by the courts in a class action suit that ordered Apple to honor it's "lifetime" support promise back when most computer companies did that sort of thing. At least Apple is still around while most of the PC companies that were almost giants were felled by realities either known from the get go or found out quickly after jumping into the business both feet first and eyes closed. At least that's the way that i see it/ but i digressed. Please accept my apologies.novicecutie, to check the OS version, click on the apple in the top left corner, then click on "about this mac." It should tell you the info we need.Oh alright sorry guys haha It's a Mac OS X? yeah that's what it says. Hopefully this will help.

ThanksIt should also say the full version name though after it. Like Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4, etc.It says it's a Mac OS X version 10.1.5.

The password that it's asking for is just any Administrator password...

You need to know one of the adminstrator's passwords to install software, or else you're going to have to find your Mac OS X install disc, which will allow you to reset the password if needed.Alright so, NEITHER him nor his mother know the password. She forgot it and never told him. So how do I wipe the computer and START over?
and if I do wipe it and start over, will it include shockwave...or even let me download it? because right now I can't download anything. once again "...or else you're going to have to find your Mac OS X install disc, which will allow you to reset the password if needed."

If you have the disk, you can reset the password. Let me know if you have it or not.

Or you could take the EASIER route and just bring it to an apple store. They'll help you out if you don't have the disk. Just make an APPOINTMENT online at www.apple.com/retail.

It's free.

Solve : G4 cpu replacement not working?

Answer»

Hi; I just tried REPLACING my cpu in my quicksilver 733hhz with a dual 1ghz from a quicksilver 2002.
No boot, no start-up chord (which I THINK WOULD show that the cpu is recognized). When I put the 733 back in everything works fine. Upgrades sellers sell the same CPUS to fit both machines, as far as I can SEE. Praps the replacement is dud.
Anyone any ideas? Thanks.Since the old cpu works again when you put it in, it sounds like the new one is either the wrong kind or a dud. I'd talk to where you bought it from.

Solve : Installed windows onto mac, can't get back to mac?

Answer»

Help! Installed Windows on my mac so I could use Microsoft EXPRESSIONS Web, now I can't figure out how to get back to the Mac system. PLEASE, can someone help me! First, did you use a program such as VMware or Parallels? Or did you use bootcamp?

I USED boot campWhen you first turn on the computer, HOLD the "option" key. It will come up asking which system you want to boot, windows or mac (assuming you didn't wipe the mac PARTITION)
