Solve : using a powerbook 190 as a phone...?

Answer»

i recently obtained a 10 or 11 year old macintosh POWERBOOK 190. it is running mac OS with a six gigabyte hard drive, and i THINK it has twelve megabytes of ram. i want to KNOW if there is anyway i could use the motorolla MONTANA 33.6 fax modem with it and set it up as a phone. i need a program that is designed for mac OS. the mac has only a floppy disk drive, so, it may be a bit tough to install somthing untill i get some floppies.

thanks in advance. im sure someone will come along eventually and tell me, or, at least point me in the right direction.

if you would like to see pictures of the vintage laptop, i will show you them. the only reason why i got it is because the screen's brackets are busted from the screen, i will rig the screen so it sits upright and doesnt need a prop.  Well, I dont belive you can use it as a phone if its a data modem...

You can make it dial numbers, but I dont know of any tools off hand. We need some good Apple experts on this site someday...yes, it is possible to use a data modem as a phone, i did it once on windows 95 a long time ago, i forgot how though. i do not know if it is possible to do it on Mac OS though. What version of Mac OS? And I'm pretty sure there are some phone apps for 68K macs.

Solve : High level of Seagate 2.5" SATA drives failing?

Answer»

I am receiving about two of these drives daily. (Momentus 5400.2)

Without exception, they are manufactured in China, and have firmware 7.01. Also, they are all out of MAC computers.

Is anyone else coming across these? Has anyone successfully managed to repair one?
This is the same problem I’ve faced and I’ve sent the drives  to a lab called Salvage Data Recovery Lab.
They solved my problem. Now its working fine. I even got my lost data. If you are failed get your drive repaired any where then why don’t you GO recovery labs. I don’t know MUCH about other companies or labs but since I’ve been to Salavagedata recovery labs, I would say it is reasonably economical and justifiable considering the unsurpassed level of expertise, customized SOLUTION, and quality of support and GUARANTY provided.

Solve : Print Jobs stop G5?

Answer»

I have a lab with 25 MAC G5's 1g ram 150 HD and cannot print to a hp 4050 BLACK & white printer from the G5's either directly(ip printing) or thru a print que on a Xserve box. I can however print to this printer with a PC so I know the printer network CONNECTION is good. I have deleted and reinstalled the printer on a couple of G5's and they still cannot print all that happens is the jobs stop and when you click the icon to START jobs it almost immediately stops again.
I have 2 other printers that the G5's do print to 1 is thru the Xserve and 1 is thru ip printing on the machine.

Solve : Problem with dragging?

Answer»

My apple mouse does everything it's supposed to do on my mac OS X except to drag ANYTHING TO ANYPLACE! Example-can't drag icon on desktop down to trash. Mouse DOES do this on another computer so it isn't a problem with the mouse.  Does anyone KNOW why I can't drag and how do I fix it?  Please help!
Thank you,   WeewishmeHello, I'm not too familiar with macs, i have an old apple plus and i believe that with a mac you need to download software to click and drag. I'm not sure why it's like this but I guess Mac Is DIFFERENT from PC in someways.

Solve : I need help with an I - Mac?

Answer»

Hi everyone
I'm new to this forum, my name is William, I am in Western Mass, and I have a friend in PA,[edit][/edit] that needs HELP with her mac, when she tries to play a VCD, or DVD, she gets all kinds of folders that come up, I am not familaur with Mac's - as I use a DELL (very easy to use), how can she easly use her media plater without a LOT of hassle, or having to LOOK through all those files.
This is all the info I have on her computer - I-Mac, power PC G4, System 1.3.9, 2003.
Thank you kindly for any help you can offer.

William

Please forgive my spelling.Chances are, the problem is caused by the false sense that the Apple company creates about being able to view media. Many Macs with their pre-installed software are -not- able to view media.
(Though, MacOS X should be somewhat capible)

Please verify that this is a DVD drive (for DVD's)
Check for other software that refers to a sort of media player.

You may want to check out VLC Media Player for Mac
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
(credits for the link go to Rob_Pomeroy)I would like to whole heartedly thank you for the info you gave me, my friend used it in her Mac, and it worked out great, she asked that I passed on her thanks as well.

Peace
William

Solve : Reading SCSI Zip disks in a USB Zip drive??

Answer»

I'm moving from an older G3 PowerBook (with all SCSI ports) to a newer MacBook with USB CONNECTIONS. I'm wanting to TRANSFER older data to the new laptop where possible. If I write to a 250MB SCSI Zip drive, can I then pop the disk into a 250MB USB Zip drive and load whatever data I need into the MacBook? I'm trying to get some confirmation on the logic / pitfalls of this before buying a used USB Zip drive. (<$50 on eBay) Will newer apps be able to read stuff created with older ones? Can I save the data in some form on the OS9 that will be foreward compatible with newer apps? (Like CONVERTING anything created with Appleworks into SimpleText, e.g.)
Thanks for any and all advice.

Solve : Iomega Zip failure?

Answer»

I have a one year old (2006) iMac and an external Iomega 100 Zip drive that is less than one year old. A zip disc was in the drive, and I left the computer for a little while, causing it to go to sleep. When I RETURNED, I pressed the spacebar to wake it up, and an error message came on saying the device was not removed properly, but I didn't try to remove it. Maybe I should have clicked the "OK" button on the message, but I didn't do anything, and after a few minutes the zip disc ejected itself (by itself) and the message went away. When I re-inserted the zip disc, this message came up: "The disc you inserted was not readable by this computer." I then re-started the machine, re-inserted the zip disc, and the same message came up. Other zip discs have worked fine since this happened. Did I lose the data on my disc? Did the machine going to sleep with the disc in the zip drive and/or not clicking the "OK" button cause this to happen? Thanks for your help.If possible, use the DiskCheck program on the removable drive

It may be possible that you need to reformat the drive, using a Windows computer (which, can sometimes be better at managing these problems)

To remove a device with the Macintosh OS
Either drag it to the trash can, or select the device on the desktop, and press that funny cloverleaf-type key and E to Eject
Due to the nature of the function, if the external drive has an actual hard drive inside it, you should ALWAYS eject the drive firstyes, in mac going into sleep will sometimes forcefully "eject" the drive causing it to be unreadable, this happened to a 60gb Western Digital external hard drive a teacher was using in my 3d GRAPHICS and design CLASS.. quite funny, it wouldnt work on her computer anymore, so she had to  log onto her computer via one of the student EMacs, and transfer the data back to her computer because the hard drive worked on every other computer but hers (sometimes when this happens it will not work on any other computer at all), then she had to format it, plug it back into her computer, and put the data back onto it. macs are a bit tempermental about hot SWAPPING drives...

Solve : prohibitory sign?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a problem with my powerbook G4 (12 inch).
MacOS 10.3 will not boot. I used the cd included with
the mac to check the hardware. Everything seems fine.
On the other hand the disk utility program found many
problems that it could not solve. I thus tried to
reinstalled macOS with the system that was provided
with the computer choosing the option that would not
delete my data (last BACKUP was in August of last year
), but it first said that it would take 8 hours! and
then blocked and nothing happened... I just shut the
computer down... probably a bad idea.

I then took a second powerbook with the same system
and connected it to mine using a firewire. I was able
to see the harddisk and start all my programs e.g.
powerpoint presentation or look at my pictures. All
the data is safe. The problem is that although I am
able to access it through the second mac I can't copy
it or save it. I tried to do the copy using the unix
command as well, as previously this blocked both
computer and I had to reboot. Regular data recovery
softwares blocked both computers as well.
I noticed a funny thing: when using unix I saw that
there was an "f" in front of the disk corresponding to
my harddisk. I have never seen that before but it
seems to me that the problem is a QUESTION of user
rights. I tried to change the rights to access to my
data and copy it but without success.

I then gave up and tried to get my computer fixed at
a macintosh shop in Karlsruhe, Germany called Gravis.
Avoid these guys, they are useless and expensive. They
basically tried the very same things I had tried
myself and charged me for that.

Does anyone know how to solve this problem or has
seen this problem before and can tell me whether there
is some hope to recover the data. It would also help
if you could tell me where to get it fixed. I live in
Brussels, Belgium.

Thanks a lot in advance.the quickest solution would be to whip the hard disk out and put it into another mac, pc, or EXTERNAL drive case and copy the files you need to recover.

Then (with the disk reinstalled in a mac) reformat the drive as it sounds like you have bad or damaged sectors on the drive. Personally I'd replace the drive because usually once a drive is damaged the errors spread even after a low level formatHOW TO BOOT FROM CD FOR APPLE NOTEBOOK G4? WHENEVER POWER ON MY NOTEBOOK, GLOBE IMAGE APPEAR AT CENTER. AFTER A FEW SECOND HAPPY LOGO ALTERNATELY APPEAR WITH QUESTION MARK. HOW TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEMA quick note about using the Macintosh operating system

The Macintosh OS is not as stable as the Apple company may lead you to think. Because of how the OS operates, data loss of system files that go corrupt may occure. It is reccomended that you reinstall your operating system at least once a year. Do not use the format option that deletes all your data, just use the option that reinstalls the OS over the current OS without harming your files. It is still a good idea to BACK up your files.

You may want to try Apple support also www.apple.com I belive they have a forum style support.

I recived the question mark over a folder icon when I had some sort of RAM clear or system settings clear done. This requires a key combo when your Mac starts

Solve : Website won't open with MAC OS?

Answer»

I just bought a MacBook, and I love it.  But, I have a school online simulation for hospitality called BYOB www.buildyourownbar.ca , and it doesn't recognize MAC OS to run it.  Is there a way that I coud run something that would emulate all things internet explorer so that I could continue with my school simulation.  I already know that opera, and firefox do not work on it, as well as the safari that is on my computer.  I asked them, and they say they only do stuff for internet explorer, but as far as I have found, internet explorer was discontinued for Mac.  What about if I installed Windows XP in my computer, would this work?Just had a look at the site in Safari and it seems to work OK on my Mac - which PART of the site dosn't work for you? The site appears to require Macromedia Flash Player available ,

http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

Hope that helpsno, its not when you type in the e-mail address, its when I log into the interface.  The interface works like THE SIMS the game.  THANKS for trying anyway.  Anybody else???Expolorer has been discontinued on the mac, however it is still available.  Last time I checked it was still available under DOWNLOADS at apples website (although that was quite a while ago).  If you can't find it there do a google search and I'm sure you could find a download site for it.
As far as running Windows XP, I BELIEVE that would probably work as well.

Solve : Is the ZFS File System Apple's Secret Weapon??

Answer»
Sun Microsystems's CEO Jonathan Schwartz said Apple's upcoming Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard would rely on a file system that his engineers created: ZFS.

Apple Inc. collects secrets like a pack rat collects shiny things. It's part of the company's culture. So when someone breaks the code of silence, it sets virtual seismographic needles scratching. That happened this week, when Sun Microsystems Inc.'s CEO Jonathan Schwartz said Apple's upcoming Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, would rely on a file system that engineers at his company have spent years creating: ZFS.

Just what is ZFS, and why did it send Mac enthusiasts spinning? Read on. ...

What does ZFS stand for? At one time, it was an acronym for Zettabyte File System, but Sun now prefers that the name stand on its own. "Zetta," by the way, is one of the standard SI prefixes -- as are the much more familiar "kilo," "mega" and "giga" -- and represents 1021, or 100,000,000,000,000,000,000. According to Sun, "The largest SI prefix we liked was 'zetta.'" Sun was obviously seeking to EVOKE a really big number to remind everyone of the file system's data (and number of files) capacity. Sort of like Super Size Me -- the movie -- but bigger. Way bigger.

Got it. Now what is it? ZFS is a 128-bit file system that Sun announced in 2004 but didn't integrate with its Solaris operating system until 2006. Among ZFS' selling points is huge capacity, storage pooling, fast data snapshots and copy-on-write. As a 128-bit file system, it can store 18 billion billion times more data than current 64-bit systems, such as NTFS, which is Microsoft Corp.'s file system for Windows. According to calculations on Wikipedia, it would take about 9,000 years to max out ZFS' file limit if 1,000 files were created every second. Pooling eliminates partitions, and much of the hassle with storage, such as figuring which "volume" to stick files on, or how to manage a new external drive.

"You don't have to worry about the details of what's going on with your disks, your storage or your file systems," Jeff Bonwick, chief architect of ZFS, said when Sun rolled out the file system in 2004. "You add disks to your storage pool, file systems consume space automatically as they need it, and administrators don't have to get involved." And copy-on-write, which copies modified data to a new block rather than overwriting existing data, is pertinent here because it's one of the most-common methods used to take quick "snapshots" of a disk (or in the case of ZFS, the storage pool) as point-in-time backups.

How big a file?

Without that information, the quote is completely meaningless, as you have noticed. If each file was one thousandth the max size, the filesystem would get maxed out in 1 second.

But, let's fire up Windows Calculator!

100000000000000000000 bytes is the limit, (10^21)
283824000000 is the number of seconds in 9000 years

352331022 is the one divided by the other,

divide by 1000

352,331.022 is the rough file size, around 350 Kb

Still completely meaningless.

Although it's suspiciously close to the old 5.25 inch floppy disk capacity of 360 kb that was common when Apples first appeared in the 1980s. Maybe that's the bit that got left out? A variant of hard drives storing the equivalent of a pile of floppy disks N miles high or whatever.Well, SINCE Rob P*(EGGHEAD)  isn't around for the most part anymore...I'd  have to say that you "contrex" are pretty much next inline for one of the forum freakin genius roles here !!  your posts are very straightforward and great info* > just don't say nothing to  G-man !!!

Thanks, honvetops, that's a very nice thing you said, and it makes me feel very humble, because I remember I have been less than polite to you on at least one occasion.
ahhh  *censored*.  I take grief at work for a living (dispatcher) member Louie taxie !!

I can be a dck~  I deserve most of it  *

(Raptor RUBS off on me !!!)   Wouldent you have to have a larger hard drive capacity so that you could actually unleash the power if the ZFS system?

I know that if you had a 120GB HDD, it would only be able to store 120GB, but, the ZFS would only allow more space to be taken >if< you had a larger drive.

Meaning the current NTFS system has a certain limit as to how much space can be allocated within.

Only plus I see here is:
ZFS would store and retrieve information slightly faster.

(someone verify this, I have no idea what I am talking about)

Is the Mac still all UFS?

With the hdd pooling option, you could put a thousand 500gb hard drives together to create one massive volume.

If it would take 9,000 years to max out zfs's capabilities, I hope hard drives get a lot faster! 1,000,000 rpm.... So overall, it really cant do more than the NTFS file system if you are a normal user... (and dont plan on hosting a large shared server) Ya, I guess the only uses would be for computers like this one that is used for scientific studies and simulations. Maybe very large databases, too. Well I know alot about older Macs, specifically the PowerBook 500 series.

SNAP!I've been fixing and updating 95 and up for friends. then someone brought me a mac dated 12/31/94. no way to net that I could find, It would not download from cd's I made from inet downloads. everything I tried to feed it was old power mac. but it said it didn't know what created it. it's setting on the floor collecting dust for me! made me feel  "or realize" how stupid I am.Alot, I use Mac since the BEGINNING, the Mac 128K For work, I need to know both Mac and Windows, I have to say, the OSX is definitly superio. I am more productive on the Mac. The Mac OSX is stable, the underline UNIX is powerful I use the Mac Mini to host serval websites. I never need to do virus scan, registery clearning... The Mac display looks so much nicer too, I have two identical 22" widescreens, the one on the PC doesn't look half as good. Mac softwares are generally better written. Hardly ever need to reboot even when a bad software crashs....
I can go on and on.

Why would someone want to waste $300 to get this Vista crap while one can get OSX for half of the price and twice as stable. Bill gate eats the dust here.

B.I voted option 6...Like the surface of mars. i know there was proof of water on mars to i do know a little bit

Basically no...i don't really know about Macs. I'm going to have to learn because next year we're going to be using Macs for Media Studies in school.  im suprised that no one CHOSE option 1
i mean how could apple survive??
they should have been bankrupt by now...IF there wasnt that ipod
hey dudeoxide this is for u "domes"and what does my theory of domes have to do anything with apple. Macs are used for like movies and............stuff, thats why Media Studies use Macs in school, we make a whole LOAD of movies. One reason why i chose it...

Solve : Website Blocking?

Answer»

I have been looking for a way to block certain websites so that they cannot be ACCESSED from my computer. It seems as though every answer to this question only applies to Windows. Does anyone know of a way to do this on a Mac with the Safari browser?SkipJohnson, if you have a ROUTER, try entering the router administration configuration.
Your router MAY have filtering software or the ability to block specific URL's.

Look through the Safari SETTINGS and see if you can find something for internet filtering, specifically a RASCI SETTING, or other identifying software.

Also, if that doesn't work, switch to FireFox, and then go to the following URL:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search?q=parental&status=4

Download FireFox at:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

You will find that FireFox is more capable than Safari... Safari is very limited, and just not very supportive of all scripting.

Solve : Problems booting from MacOS X 10.4 DVD?

Answer»

I'm trying to upgrade my iMac G4 from Mac OS X 10.2.8 to 10.4 but it refuses to boot from the DVD.

A friend gave me the ISO file with the DVD image, which I burned to DVD and put in the DRIVE. The instructions on the "How to" file from the DVD say to set the DVD as the startup disk, and so I did so.

Unfortunately, every time I reboot the system, it just RESTARTS the existing 10.2.8.

Any ideas?

Could it be a corrupt ISO? or maybe its am Intel ISO instead of the PPC version, how do I check? I've found this link which says how to make a DVD bootable on MacOS
http://creativebits.org/mac_os_x/make_a_dvd_copy_of_mac_os_x_tiger

But the problem is that my iMac only has a DVDcombo, and my DVD burner is on an X86 system.

Does anyone know how to burn a Mac bootable DVD on linux/Windoze?When you have your upgrade/OS CD in the computer, turn the computer off, then press and hold the C key
if that doesent work
Turn it on, and just before you see that stupid smiley face thing, press and hold the C key

Tried that. It didn't work

I've managed to borrow a USB DVD burner to plug into the iMac, now for the next problem ...

When I start the "Disk Utility" application on Mac OS X 10.2 and TRY to find the "Burn" option on the application toolbar, its not there!

Where do I find it?

Solve : Dreamweaver to HTML files on Mac?

Answer»

I have a series of identically tagged HTML files created using Dreamweaver.  Each ONE embeds a DIFFERENT movie file.  When uploaded to the host site, the different files seeme to be treated differently.  In one case, an extra embed tag is  created at the end of the line, and this seems to enable the movie to play. In other cases, no extra embed tag is created, and the movie fails to play.  I have tried adding the extra embed tags to my Dreamweaver PAGE, but they seem to disappear when uploaded to the sever.  Does anyone know why the same files would be treated differently in the upload process?  *Moderators: You might want to move this one to WebDesign
I dont use Tags on my websites, so I cant guarentee if I UNDERSTAND your question

Are you uploading the video files when you upload the HTML files?
Also, check where the embeded video source is. You might want to use the full address format
(eg: instead of /movies/mymovie.mov have it http://www.mywebsite.com/movies/mymovie.mov ... try that on one of your pages and see if it works)

If its still not working, try using an FTP CONNECTION for your file transfer upload instead of using Dreamweaver

Solve : Disappearing Files on Mac Linked to Virus??

Answer»

We have a macintosh G4, RUNNING OS 9.2.  Recently everything is a major folder on our system disappeared.  Not detectable through using unerase.

I copied everything ELSE on the hard drive to an external drive, then located the files for the email database, (using entourage, so files were located in a Microsoft user data file).

In attempting to open these from the external drive with another computer using Entourage, everything on the external drive disappeared.   I then discussed this with an associate who recalled prior to the INITIAL problem having opened an email; she believes the subject line was "A postcard for you".

We think this was a virus that seems to cause a disappearance of folders, but the volumn still seems to be present.  For example, on the external drive (350 gig) it still registered 268 gig, which was the free space with the recent transfer.

Number one for US is restoring the email files.  The rest is websites that have been backed up through other means.  Any suggestions?  Really APPRECIATE guidance to rid this system of a virus, if this is the case and to restore the email files.
Thanks,
TeresaIf no one replies:

It sounds like the system has gone corrupt.

No problem
This is common on Apple/Mac computers
Due to the nature of how the OS operates, the system can go corrupt after time. It is recommended that you reinstall the Operating System to replace the current OS files.

Put in your install CD
Do not format the drive
Only select the option that replaces the Operating System files

Solve : deleting favorites?

Answer»

I can't delete sites from my FAVORITES list. I have an iMac G5. I can't drag them out and can't use CONTROL click to open a choice list. Any help?Which browser are you using?

--OoberI have Internet Explorer 5.2While I don't have alot of experience with IE5.2 on the Mac, I did find this on the internet. See if it helps you:

"To edit your favorites, select Window and click Favorites from that menu. Select the icon next to the page you want to delete, and then press the Delete button."

Is this what you have already tried? If not, does it work? You might also want to try pressing Apple-Shift-F from the Finder which is the keystroke that supposedly brings up the favorites FOLDER. You may be able to drag the unwanted favorites out of the folder and into the trash can.

Keep us up to date.

--OoberI've tried all that. Still nothing seems to work. Anyone have a solution?Use Safari   Safari is good.......I just stumbled across this forum and hope to find some answers on it... I'm glad a separate Apple SECTION is here since it's a bit manageable.  I think I know how to answer your question about deleting favorites in IE; it's been a long time since you posted the question and have probably already found the answer, but maybe this will help anyone else looking for the same thing: move your cursor over the item you want to delete, then hold the mouse button down until a contextual menu APPEARS. One ot the choices of that menu will be to delete. Click delete and you're done! That does nothing.I'm sorry that didn't help. I see from earlier posts you're running IE 5.2  I'm using IE 5.1.7 on an older G3 Powerbook that's running OS9.1

Solve : Programing Tools for old Macintosh?

Answer»

Hello All!

Could anyone point me out a sofware programming tool that works on my Macintosh SE running System 6.08?

Thanks! You might try searching your Mac (using Sherlock) for
Hypercard

It is a programming tool for old mac systems, that can work on NEWER ones.
(Most Macintosh viruses were made using Hypercard, but now Hypercard is  no LONGER included in newer Macintosh versions) I saw hypercard. It is interesting if I could interface it with code in compiled in C or C++ or even Pascal. I want to use the computer to CONTROL some stuff via serial port. Hypercard would be great for the interface but so far I don't KNOW if I can use it that way.Unfortunately, programming for the Macintosh Operating System is quite hard

Thats why Macs dont get viruses, and for the same reason, why there is a huge lack of FREE applications (and applications all together)

You might check into some runtime environments, like GTK, which might allow you to implement another language.

Solve : Trying to erase hard drive?

Answer»

I have an old Mac G3. I'm currently running OS 8.6. I've been having trouble with lots of crashes, and the box on hardbooting says there are errors that the disk software cannot fix.
So, I've been trying to use the CD as a startup disk in order to erase the HARD drive. But when I start from the CD I get a bomb message.
Is there another WAY to startup the COMPUTER other than the hard drive as startup?

thanksWhat bomb message are you receiving?

Try this:
Put the CD in
After you hear the Mac startup sound, press and hold the C key
(if that doesnt WORK, then try pressing and holding the C key and then starting up your Non-PC Macintosh)

And if, once again, that doesn't work, after the Mac startup sound, press and hold the SHIFT key
(Or try the same thing with the S key)

Try that, and let us know what happens

Solve : The cost of an iPhone service plan?

Answer»

Here is a good article talking about iPhone service charge from TUAW.

The rub with the iPhone isn't the price of the device itself, but RATHER the unknown price of the phone plan you'll be required to buy along with it. When I buy an iPod, it is mine free and clear. I don't need to pay a monthly service charge (which is signed in blood) to ensure that the darned thing will continue to function. That won't be the case with the iPhone. I'm almost certain that you will not be able to buy an 'unlocked' iPhone (that is an iPhone that you can use on any network, without having to buy a plan) for at least a year after its introduction.

'But how much could a phone plan cost?'

The TRUTH is, we don't know yet. AT&T and Apple could be COOKING up some special deal for iPhone buyers, but for the sake of argument let's just look at AT&T's current rates (as listed on Cingular.com) for the type of services that you would want on your iPhone to take advantage of all those super cool features. Here's the breakdown:
450 minutes talktime per month (includes 5000 nights and weekend minutes): $39.99
Smartphone Connect Unlimited (this is unlimited data transfer, since an internet communicator is sort of pointless with a data transfer cap): $19.99
Messenger Starter (200 text messages per month, unlimited texts to other AT&T customers): $9.99

That's a grand TOTAL of $69.97 in services for your iPhone before taxes (and that's kind of on the low end of the available services. I'm sure lots of people will want more talk time, or more text messages.). Now, let's assume that Apple and AT&T will only REQUIRE that you sign up for a year (I'm betting the iPhone will require a 2 year contract), that translates to about $839.64 for the first year of services (before taxes once again). Tack on $500 for the iPhone itself Spam trying to convince us to not buy something?  Interesting.Maybe if you dont have service, it reverts to just an iPod.

(Nevertheless, I dont like the Apple computer company)

It all costs too much.
I guess if you have the money, it might not be so useless.

Solve : iPhone release date maybe delay to July?

Answer»

Insiders from apple said that apple iPhone release date maybe delay to the end of June or early July.

Refer to this article taking about software Q/A and OS issues about iPhone.

While people like AT&T’s COO and Apple themselves continue to maintain that the iPhone is still on track for June, everyone is still skeptical that SOMETHING else is probably brewing behind closed doors. After all, Apple told us that Leopard was on track for Spring just a couple weeks before they announced that it was being pushed ’till October, and some sources have told Ars that they were made aware of the October date by Apple long before the rest of the world knew. That information is confirmed once again by a close source this morning, and he has some not-so-great news about that pesky iPhone delay rumor. He Who Shall Not Be Named™ has told us, “Apple knew two months ago that Leopard was going to be delayed SINCE all of the key ENGINEERS are now in Taipei.”

Somebody from Foxconn/Hon Hai that “it does not look feasible that Apple will be able to ship units out in May to make the iPhone shipping date in the US (June),expect units to trickle by end of June or early July."It is doubtful they will have enough units on hand to meet the demand.”

Insiders said The issue with the iPhone is not the battery, but the software Q/A and OS-related issues.”Anyone here going to get an IPhone???No, I'd rather shoot myself in the head. The numbers are on a touch screen......what were they smoking when they thought of that

It can be really easily damaged, like the ipod mini screen when it first came out. It's going to be in your pocket all day, being sqashed under the pressure and heat, and then SNAP.......... Quote from: Raptor on April 23, 2007, 06:07:59 AM

Solve : Scsi drive access via DOS OS 6.2?

Answer»

Posted this under DOS, and was suggested to post here.

Here is the problem.
A connor HD from MacPlus system. on which have CV and other Thesis data  to retrieve.

Has tried the MacOpener route, as well as other file openers without success.

Now as a last hope he is trying to get to this DRIVE via DOS 6.2

Has installed the HD as a SCSI drive through ADAPTEC 2910 PCI card. with DOS drivers.

Has been ABLE to Identify in Autoexec.bat and or Config.sys the Card.

So far he is able to get the IDE HD as C: drive identified.  Nothing else on this HD except DOS 6.2

What is the line to use in Autoexec.bat and/or Config.sys to have system recognise the SCSI srive as D:\ drive and the CD rom as E:\ Drive.

I guess that what he would require is the listing of autoexec.bat and config.sys to configure recognition of  the two Hard DRIVES, and CDrom drive.

Allowing him to transfer the files from the SCSI drive to IDE and/or CDROM

Your input, assistance is greatly appreciated.
So this drive is from an Apple system and formatted with an Apple OS and you want to READ it in DOS? DOS is loaded on it somehow as well? I am not clear on this part.if you need access scsi drive under dos, you msut install this scsi driver for dos,
like disk, cdrom, edit config.sys, LOAD this driver, dos can access.bridsnet, you can use any boot disk like
http://www.techadvice.com/W98/S/Startup-Disk_w98.htm
It contains ASPI2DOS.SYS

Solve : An Apple program bridge??

And to uninstall a program, if I remember right, all I have to do is move the entire app to the trashcan then empty the can, correct? If an application comes with an uninstaller, use it

OK, so this WineHQ program, how well would it handle a game such as Battle for Middle Earth if I ran it and played it on my macbook do you think?
If you want to play Games, you are just going to have to get a PC

WineHQ should be able to play them, but no program would ever allow you to play it at its best performance.
You might have to lower any graphic detail levels, and other performance options.

WineHQ has a LIST of compatible programs, check and see if its listed on their website.

I've heard though that installing windows on a mac and then using bootcamp does allow for pretty good gaming, is there any truth to this?
(Heads up: My post is a bit scattered...)
Do you have an Intel Based Mac?

http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

You have to realize one thing:
No mater what software you use, you are always emulating the Windows environment. Its not actually Windows.
Thus, some performance loss will happen. You may get more errors with special file types as well.

Running two operating systems at once can be a problem.

Bootcamp, however, appears to run the Windows OS on its own.
If it does run it on its own, then yes, it should run fine, but some of the Mac hardware might not be up to Windows standards, but nevertheless, it should still work

Bootcamp is in its BETA stages, keep this in mind. You might encounter errors from this, but it should be somewhat smooth.

Solve : My iPod Review?

Answer»

I've had an iPod 5g for about six months now and thought it was about time for a review on it. Overall, I think it's an okay mp3 player. Just okay.
It is nice that you can listen to music, watch videos, and view pictures, ebooks, etc. with it.

You can even play games on it. I really like the music trivia game. It plays a clip from one of the songs in your library and lists the title along with four other song titles and you have to choose the correct song. It's fun.

Viewing pictures is very nice. You can scroll through your image library with the click wheel very quickly, without the images freezing or slowing down. It has very good resolution for such a small screen.

Watching videos on the small screen can be a little difficult... because it's small. I usually have to hold the iPod fairly close to watch it comfortably. But that's no surprise. I expected that much from a small screen. It is also annoying that I had to convert all of my videos to the apple approved format.

It plays mp3 music just like every other mp3 player. It also plays the apple's proprietary format, AAC, which I don't know much about. I haven't USED it.

Using the click wheel to scroll through the menus is cumbersome. It can be difficult to select an item because the click wheel is touch sensitive and usually moves to the next item while you are lifting your finger to open the song you want. So then, you have to try the click wheel again and move up one song. Which of course, when you finish scrolling back and forth to reach the one song you want (not easily), when you lift your finger, it moves again.
The menu system is actually fairly simple. Categories are broken up logically and it is easy to find the things you need.

I do wish there was an easier way to change the shuffle and repeat settings for music. If I want to turn off the shuffle option, I have to navigate to the root menu and then scroll to the settings folder and find the shuffle option. Then find the appropriate shuffle setting to select it. Then, in order to change any music, I have to navigate to the now playing list. It seems there should be an easier way! It's definitely not something you want to do while driving.

Now that I've had my iPod for a while, I wish I would have bought a Zune. (My WIFE insisted on the iPod) The Zune has a bigger display, bluetooth, and it supports more standard media formats. iPod only supports mp3 and the apple standard formats.

Last comment. I can't easily run with my iPod. If I clip it to my pants, the constant motion and jarring of the iPod can make it freeze. This probably isn't a problem with the flash memory iPods, but with the ones with hard drives, it is. I would run with it on my arm, but the strap I have isn't very comfortable and tends to either cut off circulation or slide around too much. And I'm not about to hold it while I do my 5-10 mile runs!

Nice reply!!

Ok as far as i-pods go i don't think there the future of mp3s at all , ive had a philips mp3 for ages now and i have to say its so good much BETTER than apples i-pod , i don't like the smooth scrolling circle in the middle and i don't like the way the play lists arranges on them , I-tune is the worst program ever invented by apple its so confusing to use and most people who have mp3s are collage students and im sure they don't have the time to mess around with importing crap from one player to the next takes ages i like the basic philips one i have just press play and boom theres the music it also has a voice activator where you can actually say the song you want rather than scroll through a 1000 of them ...... scrap the i-pod bring on a basic flash drive i say

You reminded me of another thing I wanted to say about the iPod.
The worst thing about the iPod is iTunes. As soon as you install iTunes, it asks you if you want it to organize your music collection. This is a very bad idea. Especially if you have custom CDs or an album with different artists. It takes all of your music and puts each song and sorts them by ARTIST in the My Music directory, creating hundreds of artist folders and completely disorganizing any preplanned scheme you are used to. I was extremely upset when I found out what it did to my years of personalization.

Oh, and congrats on your new ranking stony! yeah, i also got an ipod 5th generation 60gb,huh...sucks...

If i know earlier...i rather wait for playstation 3 http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=23&name=MP3-Players

Take a look at some of those

Some are more expensive, yes, but some are cheaper, and do the same thing, and some are of better value.

Notice that many of them hold more than 5GB as well. Quote from: Richenstony on September 27, 2007, 09:47:35 AM

Nice man !

Thanks so friendly as always... . *sighs*

Solve : Adobe photoshop 5.5 clone tool?

Answer»

I recently used Adobe Photoshop 5.5 clone tool.
I then tried to USE it on another photo.
I only got a very light "ghosting" of area I was cloning.
What is the problem?
Are my scratch disk full?
I did not get a warning that this was the problem.
Any thoughts? Thanks. It might be a problem with the ACTUAL brush TYPE.
Select the Brush Selection tool (somewhere near the top of the screen) and make sure that you are using a brush with a hard edge (unless you want it feathered)

The cloning tool requires that you have selected a distance to copy from. Press and hold the ALT button while you have the cloning tool selected. Now click on the area of the photo you want to copy, and then click and hold the area you want it COPIED to.

Is this the information you were LOOKING for?

Solve : itunes update?

Answer»

About every week there is a new update for itunes and it doesn't really change itunes very much. Is doing this every week required or can i just ignore it?iTunes, to tell the truth, isnt the greatest software on earth (at least in my opinion)

Other than that:
Your updates are probably security RELATED. It MAY be a slight security risk to STOP installing updates (not a big one, but every few MONTHS its a good idea to CHECK for updates to make sure)
(Yes, security updates. That is the only reason I can think of for why they would be weekly.)

Somewhere, there should be a settings/preferences/options area in your menu bar. (click here to see what a menu bar looks like)
Search your preferences for "Updates" and change how often it checks for them.

Solve : HD transfer from Mac to PC?

Answer»

I had been using an external hard drive to back up my macbook.  I recently purchased a new hard drive, and no longer need my old external hard drive and would like to format it for use with a PC.  How do I do this, as I can't get any PC's to recognize the drive, likely because it's FORMATED in MAC OS (extended).  I TRIED formatting it using my parallels side, but the virtual machine wouldn't recognize the drive either.

Thanks a lot.Hello, if I may clarify:
You are trying to format the drive using XP on a Virtual Machine?
I think you will find that this operation might not be possible.

(Translated: Mac is evil, evil, evil, evil, evil, evil)

"I recently purchased a new hard drive"
Do you mean a new hard drive, or a new COMPUTER? (sorry if it sounds like a stupid question, but a lot of users here get their terminology wrong)

What operating system is the PC using?
If you have Vista:
Click Start> Control Panel> Maitenence> Under "Administrative Tools" find "Create and Format Hard Disk Partitions" and click it
Find your USB drive, and format it. Hi,
I am trying to format the HD using the Mac side.  The only options available include Mac formats, and MS-DOS and UNIX.  Would MS-DOS even be an acceptable format for a PC running Windows XP?  I would LOVE to format it using my windows VM, but it does not recognize the drive.

Thanks Quote from: Atlas on September 19, 2007, 09:42:50 PM

Good Evening:
If you can, use the NTFS format to format a drive for the Windows operating system.
MS-DOS may be acceptable to get it detected by Windows, but once you get Windows to recognize the format, you will want to format it again in Windows and use the NTFS file format if you plan on using this for any Windows 2000 and up PC's, if you plan on connecting it to a ME, 98, or 98SE computer, you will need to use the FAT32 format.

Solve : backwards itunes: HELP!?

Answer»

i had my laptop stolen and therefore i lost all my music files, but they are all still on my ipod. i now have a new laptop, but is there a way to restore my music back onto my new laptop through my ipod? i phoned apple and they said there was software available but because i don't have  a mac they could not tell me what it was. can anyone help?Although Apple’s iTunes program is very good at keeping a computer-based library synchronized to an iPod automatically, or for manually transferring tracks from your computer’s iTunes library onto your iPod, it provides extremely limited functionality for transferring information in the opposite direction—from your iPod back to your computer.

One of the likely reasons for Apple to have taken such a restrictive approach to this is to combat piracy and thereby maintain good relations with the music labels that are currently selling their content via Apple’s iTunes Store. In reality, however, there are any number of legitimate reasons why a user MAY want to copy music from their iPod back to their computer, such as recovering from a catastrophic system failure, or easily transferring a large iTunes library over to a new computer.

Before we get into the details of how to copy media content from the iPod back to your computer, it’s important to begin with a discussion of how that content is actually stored on the iPod. An understanding of how the iPod stores its content will make it more clear as to what the various recovery or copying options actually do, and help decide on what the best option is for a particular situation.

Unlike many other portable media players, the iPod stores its content using a database methodology. iTunes copies the content itself to a hidden directory structure on the iPod and then updates a database stored on the iPod. It is this database that is used both by iTunes and the iPod interface itself to index and catalog the content that is stored on the iPod.

For the most part, this database information is gleaned from the internal header tags within the media files themselves, in much the same way that iTunes indexes and catalogs your media library. Information such as the track name, artist, ALBUM, genre, and a myriad of other information that you can find for each track in iTunes is actually stored in each file, and the name of the file has no bearing on what iTunes or the iPod sees or how it catalogs any given media file. In fact, the only time the file name is ever used by iTunes is if the tags themselves are not present.

The iPod database also contains additional information about your music that is not normally stored within the tracks themselves. This includes your playlists and the listing of their content, as well as track metadata such as rating, play count, last played time, skip count, last skipped time, and more.

This particular means of storing information on the iPod has both advantages and disadvantages. The major advantage to this approach is that music is catalogued in such a way that it is easily and rapidly accessible from the various menus on the iPod itself, without having to search through individual track information or build a separate cache. The disadvantage is that the music must be tagged properly in order for this to work, and of course this obscures the actual layout of the music files themselves, making it more difficult to find and copy specific tracks from the iPod back to the computer.

Fortunately, a number of third-party utilities have been developed that can read these iPod databases directly, and use them to not only locate specific tracks to recover, but in some cases even recover playlists and other additional metadata such as rating and play count.

On the iPod itself, all of the internal iPod information is located in a hidden folder called iPod_Control. Most of the information in this folder pertains to internal iPod operations, such as device configuration and settings and the library database described above. However, beneath this iPod_Control folder is a Music folder that contains all of the individual AUDIO and video files that are stored on that particular iPod. The only information not stored here is photos, which we will discuss separately later in this article.

The files in the Music folder won’t necessarily be organized in any meaningful way for a human, since they are expected to be accessed via the iPod’s library database, which contains all of the information and other metadata for each track cross-referenced with the location of these individual files.

Disaster Recovery

So you have a nice big 80GB iPod with your entire media library loaded onto it, synchronizing automatically with your iTunes library, when suddenly the unthinkable happens… Your computer’s hard drive decides that it’s been spinning for long enough, and gives up on you.

You now suddenly find yourself in the position where your only copy of your music library is on your iPod itself, and you need to get those tracks back off the iPod onto your computer, so you can rebuild your iTunes library.

In a situation where you’ve been using automatic synchronization with your iTunes library, and you suddenly find you no longer have an iTunes library to sync with, there are a couple of additional considerations that are important to keep in mind.

Automatic iPod synchronization from iTunes is, for the most part, a one-way experience. Some information does come back in the other direction, such as ratings and play counts, but the bottom line is that iTunes considers the library on your computer to be “authoritative”—meaning that the iPod mirrors the iTunes library, rather than the other way around.

The unfortunate downside to this is that if you have an empty iTunes library on your computer, an iPod that is automatically syncing to it will happily mirror the content of your empty library. In other words, everything on the iPod will be deleted and replaced with, well… nothing.

The good news, however, is that this is only really a problem if you’re actually using the same library as you were syncing with before. iTunes is intelligent enough to notice when an iPod that you connect was previously associated to a different iTunes library database, and prompt you with a warning as to what you want to do next:

If you are trying to recover your music from your iPod, you obviously do not want to select Erase and Sync. Simply click Cancel INSTEAD, and your iPod will remain CONNECTED to your computer, but the auto-sync process will not run.

Solve : Connecting my Macbook Pro to a TV?

Answer»

Okay, so I just got an LCD HDTV, and I am wondering what KINDA of cables I need to connect the two.  I have been looking all over and can't find any clear information on it.  Basically, the TV has the HDMI hook-ups and a VGA hookup, and my MacBook PRO has, obviously, the DMI connector.

Now, the guy at the store said all I needed was a DMI to VGA CORDHOWEVER, the one Apple makes is like 3-inches, so I'll need a longer one, but what I've read on most places is that you need a seperate cable for AUDIO.  What I need to know is is this true, and if so, is there some kind of cable out there that I can't find that transmits both audio and video into the TV from my MacBook Pro, and if so how much and where can I find it.

Sorry if it's not clear enough, it's the best I could make it for now.  Thanks.
