Solve : Adobe Illustrator Crash?

Answer»

I am using a MAC OS on a MIni Mac with CS3. After loading a currpted picture file last week, I have not been able to boot Illustrator since. Initially, the file was not accepted by the MAC in the sense that the THUMB drive I downloaded the file from showed two separate entities.
I reformatted the thumb drive but ALSO downloaded the file on the MAC.
What can I do? ADOBE has not replied to the crash report.
PhilipPhilip,

You could TRY deleting the adobe illustrator preferences file and see if that helps.

It would help if you told us if you're receiving any error messages as well, or if you could describe what exactly happens when you try to open CS3 (does the dock icon bounce, then stop bouncing, ETC).

Anyway, to delete the preference file for adobe illustrator, you'll find it on your hard drive under your home folder (if you don't know where that is, here's the full path:

Hard drive --> Users --> username --> Library --> Preferences.  There should be a file there named something like com.adobe.illustrator.plist

Delete that file and try opening illustrator again.

Let us know what happens, and please include as much information as you can.

Solve : iPod formatted in Windows?

Answer»

Any solutions I started formating the iPod as a drive by RIGHT clicking on it in windows explorer and then choosing Faomat option. ALTHOUGH I cancelled it immediately, I do not see my ipod in itune any longer

Thanks in advance for the helpformat it and complete the format.agreed.  if you finish the format it should start showing up in iTunes as a recovery iPod.

If that doesn't work, we can put your iPod into DISK mode (if you TELL us what KIND of iPod you have).

You may want to try closing out and reopening itunes after you format the iPod.

Solve : Can't print at all?

Answer»

Hello,

I am at work and I've come across a printing issue that no one seems to be able to fix. When I print the job will go to the printer, the printer will say that the job is complete and then the stopped job button SHOWS in the utility window. The job never prints. It doesn't matter which printer I print to or how I print. I've tried printing over AppleTalk, USB, ethernet, Bonjour and IP. Nothing works. My computer can communicate with the printer. But the printer won't print anything I send to it.  It's worth noting that at another venue I had to have my IP CHANGED to be able to print to one specific printer. But since then it has changed back so I can't figure out the problem. I've tried deleting all of my printers and re-adding them. I've tried resetting the printer settings through the print utility. I've reset the PRAM. Nothing works. I am using a PowerBook G4, 10.4.11. PLEASE Help.

Thanks!Have your network admin or LAN admin look at your profile and / or printer profile.  We had people at work who couldn't print, and I was told their profiles had to be REBUILT.Aegis is on the right track.

However, if you have rights to create another profile on the machine itself, you can try that before having to talk to your system admin.

Try making a new profile and see if you can print from that one.  If you can, you know your profile has issues and needs to be rebuilt.  If that still doesn't work, you could be looking at permissions issues with your systems admin, or possibly other issues on your mac not related to your profile.

Is it legal to download this?

Is it legal to download this?

If so, is it legal to install on a pc?  If not, is it legal to intall it on a virtual machine like VMware?

This is a very gray area.

According to apple's terms and conditions in their EULA, they say that their software can only be used on "Apple-branded" devices.  Some PEOPLE have claimed that putting an apple sticker on any machine would technically bypass that, but if you're worried about legality of things I'm going to recommend not trying to use that one in court.is psystar legal? Psystar offers MacOSX on non-apple hardware....there have been legal battles between apple and psystar, and in the latest one, psystar won.

However, to my knowledge apple is appealing the court's decision.I heard that Apple stole OS X from Linux..........I haven't read anything on that before, that's just what I heard.  However, based on that, and depending on the degree of what was actually "stolen" I can see how people could justify downloading OSx86.

Personally, since Leopard is a trademark of Apple which is one of the OSx86 versions, I'd have a hard time downloading it without guilt..         I'm just very curious to hear others' opinions and comments..

I think what I'll end up doing is just buying a MAC computer, since I really need to learn the MAC, and dual boot it with Windows, since they ship with Intel chips now....How convenient, you get a MAC and a PC (so to speak) in one....instead of buying two separate computers..

it's a MAC address... the computer is a Mac

the words "steal" when talking about this type of thing are a bit overzealous- Apple didn't  "steal" OSX from "Linux"- it's simply based off a Linux kernel (darwin I think?) The rest of the code (for the GUI and so forth) they added themselves, as far as I'm aware.

This is SIMILAR to the whole MS stole windows from Apple, apple stole from xerox, etc etc-

they didn't "steal"- they saw neat features, and implemented them on their own. Apple didn't duplicate the xerox star code, they duplicated the functionality- and MS didn't duplicate the Apple GUI on the PC, they duplicated the functionality (well, they tried too... it took a few versions ). Saying they "stole" it is to undermine the vast number of man-hours that both companies (MS and Apple) employees spent WRITING their own versions.

In a similar vein, why does nobody say that MS word is stolen from WordStar? Or that WordStar itself is simply a stolen and enhanced version of EDIT, or e, or that OpenOffice is some kind of BASTARDIZED version of VIM?

No, it's the ideas they "stole"... which, as I said, is a bit of harsh wording.

if a car catches fire, and one passenger breaks the window to escape- and the other passengers do the same- can that first passenger sue the others for stealing his idea? Probably not.

The first person to think of an idea is hardly ever the first person to implement it, anyway. Quote from: blockHEAD on August 04, 2009, 02:59:25 AM

That's incorrect.  Apple's OS X is based on Unix, the same open source OS that linux is based off of (though apple's unix is a bit of a different flavor than most linux distros)

As far as feeling bad about downloading it, I don't... and have downloaded it in the past.  However, his question was: is it legal?  to that I say: probably not. Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 04, 2009, 04:17:17 AM

Solve : macbook won't boot past wheel of death?

Answer»

I came across a Macbook with OS X 10.5.4, when the laptop is turning on, it goes to a screen with a gray apple and spinning wheel under it and it will stay there for hours and not boot. I looked online and tried to boot it in safe mode, which it won't do. I have put in the OS X installation cd/dvd and after it goes in, about 10 seconds later it spits it back out. I have tried to put it in and hold down the C key while the laptop boots, but the cd/dvd won't stay in long enough for it to boot. On my previous internet search I found a post that said some people were having this problem and the power light always stayed amber and they took the battery out and turned the computer back on and it booted. I tried that and it didn't WORK either (fyi, the power light is always amber when the computer is on or off except when the battery was out, then it was green). I did get the laptop to boot into disk diagnostics and it did not find any problems. Any help as to what I need to do to fix this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. The only THING that I could possibly think of doing is to throw it out the window and buy a pc.  Im really not sure of what else to do. Quote from: computeruler on July 24, 2009, 03:12:41 PM

The only thing that I could possibly think of doing is to throw it out the window and buy a pc.  Im really not sure of what else to do.

Really?  If you're not going to provide a solution, don't EVEN bother posting.  My guess is you really don't know much about macs in the first place.

Now, onto buddy's question:
Buddy, my first suggestion is that you bring it into a nearby apple store.  They give you a free appointment, and, if the laptop's under warranty, they'll take care of the issue for you.  If it's not, they'll give you some advice and, if you don't want to fix it, will give you a price to fix it (you can sign up for a free appointment online at www.apple.com/retail)

Seeing as how you're getting an amber light when the computer is on or off, my suggestion is to take the battery out, plug in the power, and then try the first couple of things you've already tried (safe mode, booting from the OS X disc, etc.)

Let me know how things go.ComputeRuler: Not helpful at all. We're trying to help people here, not use the forum as a soapbox to project our own unjustified and Biased opinions.

I wholeheartedly AGREE with this.  I've been a windows user since the original Windows came out, and recently switched to mac for OS 10.4.  While I prefer Mac for most of my work, I still work on Windows machines (and Linux) quite a bit and have great respect for their strengths.

Solve : iTouch FROZEN?

Answer»

Hey guys! Bad news...I tried to START a gun SOUND effect app and it seemed to load properly. I changed the sensitivity and sound effect, then pressed start. Nothing happened and I noticed the usual ad wasn't there. Realising it froze, I pressed the awake button (or whatever it's called) and now it just shows a grey screen. I only bought this a week ago, so if my mom finds out, she'll freak!

Can you attach it to your computer and run recovery?I would have to connect it to my mom's laptop (the original computer it connected to)...

But even now, after hours, it is still grey. I put it on my dock, hoping that if I turn the dock on and off the ipod would follow suit as it normally would. It didn't. Quote from: Helpmeh on August 02, 2009, 08:11:27 PM

You need to try a recovery on your mums laptop. Quote from: Mulreay on August 02, 2009, 08:23:17 PM
You need to try a recovery on your mums laptop.

Actually, it may not even need the recovery.

Try simply rebooting the iPod.  To do this all you have to do is hold the power button at the top of the iPod and hold the home button at the bottom.  Hold them for 10-15 seconds and you should see the iPod reboot. Quote from: socrates on August 03, 2009, 11:30:23 AM

It's not an ipod!Isn't an iTouch a form of iPod -- heck, I don't know.

There should be, as with PDA's and many other handheld devices, a way to reboot it, as Socrates suggests.  It may, or may not, clear the memory, but at least it would be working again. Quote from: Aegis on August 03, 2009, 11:59:48 AM

I've heard multiple userse call iPod Touch's "iTouch"

I assumed this is the case.  I don't see a single thing here that leads me to believe this is not an apple ipod touch.  Furthermore, why post it in the apple forum if it's some knockoff? An apple itouch is from apple it's just not an ipod an iphone, ipod or a ishuffle. My son's Ipod touch and my Iphone both did the same thing and what Socrates suggested WORKED for both.Thank you, Mr. Oilfield!  Let's see what the original poster is able to do.

Technically, iTouch isn't even the name of a product that apple makes, nor is an ishuffle.

By the way- and iPod Touch is in fact, an iPod.

That is correct. An iTouch is an iPod Touch.

Anyway, it wouldn't show up in iTunes until I rebooted in recovery mode...but now it works! THANKS for all your help. If you want to continue arguing whether the iPod Touch can be called an iTouch. Haha.  I'm glad to hear it's working now.

iTunes allows you to listen to samples of the songs.you can go to Rhapsody, which is a site owned by the realplayer guys and just listen to the music you want, if they have it for free. Solve : iTouch certain apps keep closing/freezing?

Hey, just yesterday I purchased an iPod Touch 8gb and was fine with it. Today, after adding the Nike + iPod app from the settings (not knowing what it was) the settings will no longer open (or more specifically, it opens, then closes before anything is DISPLAYED other than the blank box. Also, after selecting a youtube VIDEO, the app freezes (YouTube). How can I remedy these problems?Problem stopped after I unplugged it... Solve : Winamp - Ipod?

Answer»

Can anyone direct me (an entry-level, novice, and not-too-smart senior citizen) to basic operating instructions for using Winamp Pro 5.56 to tranfer music from my old Ipod to my new one?  I was able to copy my music library to Winamp before I accidentally erased the library from the old Ipod.  Now I can't seem to do anything with the library in Winamp.  I thought a program called Anapod would get me out of trouble, but it seems that, like my Winamp upgrade was another waste of $30.  I don't want to waste anyone's time asking for help but if anyone knows of an understandable overview of Winamp on the Internet I would be very appreciative for the URL.  Thank you kindly! My first comment is not so much an answer to your immediate question but a solution to the headaches you've been facing:

Move your music to iTunes and use that (it's so much easier to use than winamp, especially if you are using an iPod in conjunction, and are an entry-level user).

Now, on to your current situation.

If you want to load your playlists from winamp onto your ipod, simply hook up the iPod, right click on whichever playlists you want on the ipod, and CHOOSE "sent to" --> "iPod."

If you don't SEE your iPod at all in winamp, that's another story.Thank you, Socrates, for your response.

I seem limited in my choices to transfer music anywhere, given that my only music library is now in Winamp and I can't seem to copy it or send it, either to my Ipod or to Itunes.

When I select Manage Playlists / Send Play List To... in Winamp there is no "iTUNES" choice.  Without it, I'm stuck with respect to making such a transfer

There is a choice however for sending the music library from Winamp to my Ipod as you suggested.  I repeatedly attempted the transfer and all seems to look good as it appears to be transferring each song RAPIDLY to the Ipod with a notation beside each song "status waiting."  However, at the END of the final song transfer to the queue each song's notation changes from "status waiting" to "cannot open file."  The Ipod is blank; no transfer has been completed.

I then attempted (by way of purchasing Winamp Pro) to ensure that the songs' format is correct.  I attempted to send the play list to Winamp Pro's format converter and got an error message that "transcoding failed"  and "cannot FIND decoder."

I very much appreciate your effort to solve this problem.  I'm hoping you won't wast your time on this, but if anything simple crosses your mind I welcome any ideas.  I thought about calling on assistance from an elementary school student... but, it's a pride thing.

Thank you kindly. My recommendation would be to find out where winamp is storing your music files.  They have to be somewhere on your computer.  If you can find them, you should be able to import them into iTunes.

If you're not sure how to find it, one easy trick is to go to start --> find and then type in the name of one of your songs.  See if it pops up.

Solve : Updating Firefox - now it keeps freezing?

Answer»

Thank you for the forum and thanks for an Apple section.

I got a new Imac in May.  I got it because my pc's had so many problems.  I have been a computer person since the 80's and finally decided to switch.  The constant updates , virus attacks etc. pushed me over to apple.  I am RUNNING OSX 10.5.7 2.93 processor with 4 gb ram.

Yesterday Firefox updated the browser.  Until now Firefox has been flawless.  Now the browser is freezing.  Seems like old times.  In 2008 Windows updated my XP and i was off the internet for 3 MONTHS until I finally found out the incompatibility with my FIREWALL

I thought I had avoided this update, now I have problems situation by going Apple.  I don't know how to REVERT to the previous browser and anyway these updates are aggressive they don't even tell me they're doing it until I shut down and then I am notified it will start when I turn my computer on again.

Any ideas, anyone?Shammah,

A good first step is to make sure you have all of apple's software updates applied.  To check this, simply click on the apple logo in the top left, and choose "software update."  Install any available updates.

Once this is done, run a disk permissions repair by using disk utility (applications --> utilities --> disk utility).

Once you open disk utility, click on your hard drive on the left hand side and choose "repair disk permissions" in the bottom right.

If it's still not working after that, you can always trash your firefox preferences file.  If it gets to that point, let me know and I'll walk you through it.Thanks Socrates,

Although I have auto update, for unexplainable reasons it updated a new security release on top of an old version.  I think that was the problem.

I updated the version and now it is smooth.  Thanks - still not sure why the schizophrenic updates tho but at least it is working again. That is odd, but I'm glad to hear you got it working.

1) In iTunes, when the iPod is connected you should see it listed on the left side. When you click on it does the right pane display the iPod contents? And on the bottom does it show syncing options? Are they set up properly?

2) In iTunes - EDIT - PREFERENCES - Device Tab:
  A) Make sure "disable automatic syncing" is NOT checked
  B) Is your device listed?

3) I assume there are songs listed in iTunes library. What happens when you click on FILE - SYNC IPOD?OK, thanx for the steps to try Allen, much appreciated, just stepping out now for a few HOURS, will try them when I GET home, and let you know, thanx again.... Great suggestion.  Please let us know if the iPod shows up in itunes after the reinstall.  Once it shows up you'll be in good shape.

Solve : ipod shuffle 2nd gen charge cable overheating?

Answer»

okay so my friend wanted me to load some songs on his shuffle, but he didn't have a charger or usb cable for it, so i picked one up from amazon
( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001OBZ70C/ref=s9_simz_gw_s5_p23_t1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0S2DPW52XQHDEJTXQWM6&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846 ). just RECIEVED it today, and plugged it into my pc. my computer didn't recpgnize it, and neither did itunes. so i tried another usb port, thinking that one might be finicky. no go. went to unplug it, and the cable was hot. not the 'warm from charging' hot, but like burning to the touch hot. it even left slight burn marks on the OUTSIDE rim of the ipod headphone jack. so i immediately unplugged it from the computer and from the ipod. i waited for everything to cool down, and plugged the shuffle into my ihome dock to charge it, and to my *cough* surprise *cough*, it's not charging. so my questions are: why didn't my computer/itunes recognize the shuffle? why did the cable get retardedly hot? why isn't the ipod charging? anyone else encounter these PROBLEMS?

p.s.: i think the answer to the charging question is because the ipod got burned out from the voltage of the usb port, but even then, it wouldn't charge before that strange OCCURRENCE. that cable looks pretty shady to me.  I wouldn't recommend using a 3RD party cable unless it's from a reputable company.  You may just have a bad cable, or you may have fried the iPod.

I would try and get my hands on someone else's official apple dock for it and see if it makes a difference.you have just killed your ipod with that generic cable..

Solve : Inverted album colour? (iPod Touch)?

Answer»

Hey! Whenever I play Boom Boom Pow by the Black Eyed Peas, the album cover that is displayed is red and white, instead of green and black. It is something wrong with the song because I Got A Feeling has the NORMAL cover (and they are in the same album). When I go from Boom Boom Pow to coverflow, the different coloured cover stays until I move to a new album. Did you PURCHASE this song from the iTunes store?  If not, you probably just got the wrong cover with it.  TRY doing a google image SEARCH for the cover.  Once you save the right cover to your computer, you can just drag it to the album art to CHANGE it.I got the album art from iTunes, but I did not download the song from iTunes. I will delete the cover, then re-retrieve it. Quote

If not, you might want to try my suggestion of finding the album cover you want and then bringing it in manually to itunes.  This would insure you have the right one.Well, I got the same album cover from iTunes for I Got A Feeling. I'll have to ask my mom later if I can change the cover art.

Solve : I KNOW I have an Apple?

Answer»

After searching the data base, no questions were asked as dumb as this one, but here goes. I was given a Mac tower with an unknown history. All I know is that I have a Mac tower. Its clean inside and out and hums when I push the start button. Here is what I can tell you about it. It's grey with a blue Apple on each side(my first clue) and has a plastic loop handle at all 4 corners(makes it easy to carry).  One side of it opens up by a ring handle exposing the inside nicely.Motherboard and stuff lays down in front of me and everything inside is connected. I see 3 Seagate hard drives in bottom of the case. Info on the end of the case (outside ) says Macserver G4, Family M5183, and the year 2000. I'm totally clueless as to any other info as to what OS it is or any of that info a lot of you folks REFER to. Can anybody tell me what this thing is called? When I push the start button, it fires up and hums, then makes 3 loud beeps, in SEQUENCE with a flashing light in the start button itself Then the light flashes once, pause, then 3 times. over and over. No display on a known good monitor. It actually worked one time out of the blue and I was able to click around with the mouse a few places, only to have it lock up after about 5 minuets. Can anyone direct me on what to try at this point? I REMOVED the small battery and DVOM showed it at 3.6 volts  Pushed the "cuda" button (read that some where) No change. Any help at all would be really great. I paid nothing for it, and I may have gotten my moneys worth! But I figured its worth a shot. This website has a great reputation(as stated on the Today show this morning). Thanks for listening and I hope you can help me with what little I know about this. Thanks again, PD. Open the Mac and look for a serial number. If u find one go to Apple support site and TYPE the serial #. It will give u all the information to that specific MAC. If u can not find a serial# call APPLE and they will instruct u on where to look inside the MAC for the serial #. They should not charge u for this help. Good luck. This is good advice.  It will at least give you the information as far as hardware specs go.

Once you find the hardware specs I would try searching for error codes for that machine (the 3 beeps and blinking lights is definitely indicating some type of hardware failure.  My first guess is either cpu or power supply issues).

Solve : website won't load correctly?

The website has worked in the past, and now the website will not work. It will take 3 minutes to LOAD and it will be a partial load. The format will be off, images/screencaps will not load. By using a proxy, I was allowed to access it on my computer, so I know the website is still working. I have no filters or firewalls on my computer that I know of. Unless something was clicked on by accident. Please HELP with any suggestions. I have a MacBook running with Mac OSx version 10.5.8
Thank you. What browser are you using?  Safari or Firefox?  Also, what version?

My first thought is to make sure you are up to date firefox UPDATES if you're using firefox.

Also, make sure that if the page is using Flash or Silverlight that you have the newest versions of those installed.I use both Safari and Firefox, both are up to current updates. As well, so is Adobe Flash player and still nothing. Quote from: nlfreder on September 21, 2009, 03:17:14 PM

Have you looked at the code for the website to see what plugin (if any) it's using?  If it's not flash player, you may need silverlight or something else. The PLUG in is Adobe Flash I believe because when I used a proxy to access it, it said need to download Adobe Flash and I have it already. Like I said I could access the site before. Please continue helpingWhen you say safari and firefox are up to current updates, can you be more specific?  I want to know what versions you're using.

Also, flash may be part of the site, but there may be more than flash.  Are you familiar with html code?

One thing that would help a lot is if you tell me what site you're trying to access.  If I can look at the code for the site I can better help you to assess what you're missing. What is the site URL?

The site you sent me is only using 3 things:  Shockwave, Flash, and Javascript.  If it's still not working, you need to make sure shockwave and flash are up-to-date and javascript is turned on.  Other than that, all I can say is to try trashing your firefox and/or safari preference file and try it again.

Solve : Darwine Issue?

Answer»

So I downloaded an application called Darwine, an application that used WINE to be able to read Windows applications. Later, I decided to uninstall it, and being given no uninstall instructions, I simply dragged and dropped to the TRASH can. Now on my System Profiler it says:

  System Version:   Mac OS X 10.5.7 (9J61)
  Kernel Version:   Darwin 9.7.0
  Boot Volume:   Macintosh HD
  Boot Mode:   Normal

And when I try to use .exe's on my computer to install Mac applications, most cases the little undeleted and undetected corrupted fragment of Darwine tries to RUN it and ends up giving me a bunch of gibberish special characters, and it LOOKED nothing like when it was fully installed Darwine. Can I replace the Darwin kernel with the latest software update, or do I need to manually change the kernel back to that of the Mac OSX's? I am in dire need of help because I need some programs to get to for work.you're getting TWO things confused:  Darwine and Darwin.

Darwin is the kernel of Unix that Mac's OS uses.  You don't need to get rid of that.

Darwine is what is causing the exe files to be associated with itself.

I would do a google search for "fully remove Darwine" and see what you can find.  You simply need to delete the files that are associated with darwine so the .exe files don't try to open in Darwine.

Uhm, I followed this link and I couldn't find my username.wine to delete. I deleted the first and last steps in the removal instructions, but I can't find the second file. Where could I find it? When I still boot some exes, it still uses the Darwine loader. Quote from: HopefulMac on October 01, 2009, 09:22:20 PM

Solve : The ARROW on a Podcast Title does not link me to iTunes Store but to Websites.?

Answer»

In iTunes, I used to click the arrow on a podcast title and it would take me to the podcast in the iTunes store. It would link to the podcast in iTunes and I could see other titles and info.

I just installed a new Hard drive and re-installed iTunes and when I click the arrow, it takes me to the podcast's website. I don't want it to open a separate website that has the podcast on it, I want it to open in the iTunes store like it used to.

[attachment deleted by ADMIN]Kris,

Does it do this on all podcasts, or just one?

Also, what operating system are you on?  Windows XP, Vista, 7, Mac OS 10.4, 10.5, 10.6?Yes, this happens on all of them.

I am running Windows XP and iTunes 9.0.0.70.

It installed the new version when I downloaded it from Apple.Kris,

I'm curious.  If you go to a song (not a podcast) and click the same arrow next to the album or artist name, does it take you to a website or to their page in the iTunes store?

Also, iTunes 9.1 is out- you may want to update to that.Ok, I just update iTunes and it still does it!

Yes, when I click the song, it does come up to the iTunes page in the store.Kris,

I believe that link is set by whomever creates the podcast.  It's very likely that there is no issue at all- the podcast creators just wanted the link to go to their site and not to the iTunes store.I checked the URLs and they all go to their websites. I tried to copy the URLs from iTunes, but I don't see a way to EDIT the podcast URLs. I tried to go to Advanced and Subscribe to Audiostream, then PASTE the URLs, but it still didn't work.

Yeah, I'm 99% sure that the web addresses are set by the people who submit the podcasts.  Sorry.Ok!! It's fixed! I had to track down an Apple guy at Best Buy.

Solve : IMac problem!! Does not display!?

Answer»

When i turn the computer on it just stays blank like if the video card is not working or it could ALSO be the motherboard! Does anyone know how i can figure out whats going on with my computer?

Thank u in advance! What model iMac is it?  If you have another monitor (and the appropriate adapter) you could hook that up and see if it's just your monitor that's shot.

Are you seeing a light on the iMac or HEARING sound to know that it's actually turning on?yess the white light in the FRONT of the computer turns on and i hear it also! Its an iMac G5! i dont really have another monitor  Here are a couple things you can try:  First, try unplugging the power completely from the iMac and letting it sit for 1 minute.  Then plug it back in and turn it on.  Any video?

Other option is this:

When you first HIT the power button, press command, option, P, and R all at the same time and hold them down until you hear the apple chime two times.  This resets the PRAM, which can fix common video issues.

Solve : opening email attachments on emac computer?

Answer»

I just bought a used emac computer and I know almost nothing about computers in general so I REALLY need HELP. I do know that my os is mac os x 10.4. I have firefox and safari, if that means anything. I have been trying to open attachments in my yahoo email. The attachments end in .wmv . When I click on "download file" it gives me the message that no application is available to open file. Please tell me something! I'm stumped!coleen,

You're in luck, as that issue is an easy fix with one download.  .WMV stand for windows media VIDEO, and is made for windows media player (on windows).

You just need to download a program called "flip4mac."  There is a paid version, but there is also a free one (just google "flip4mac").

Download and install that program, then reboot your computer.  Once it's installed the video should open in quicktime.

Let me know how that goes. Thanks so much! That helped so much. Now I have another question. I cannot open a file on my college's website that holds the rubics for the papers I have to write. Is there something else I have to download and install? Can you be a little more specific?  Do you get an error?  Does the page come up blank?

If you're missing a plugin it's likely flash.  Try downloading flash from adobe.com (click get flash)on the website is a tab called doc share. I click on this and the list of documents come up. I click on the document I want to open. The system downloads the document, then when I click on it to open it I get a message saying that there is no application to open this file. I have adobe flash installed and it seems to be working just fine. There are also some email attachments I cannot open for the same reason. Quote from: coleen on September 15, 2009, 12:59:52 PM

If it's the attachment you're having trouble with, it's just that you're missing an application, not a plugin.

Can you tell me what extension the attachments are? Microsoft Excel 2007... you'd probably need a version of office to open those. ( or maybe OpenOffice, not sure)

BC_Programmer is right.

.XLSX is a microsoft office 2007 (or 2008 on mac) document.

You can only open these files if you have either Office 2008 or Open Office.

Do you own Office 2008?  If you do, that'd be easiest.  If not, Open office is a free download.I tried to download the free version of open office. It did download, but nothing came up for me to install it.  Now I don't know where the download went. Hey, I told you I was VERY computer ignorant...lolIf you have one of the newer apple OS's, the download is likely in your "Downloads" folder.  Open up finder and click on "downloads" on the LEFT hand side.  It should be in there.new info...the documents I am trying to open were created using Microsoft Excel 2007. And I still can't figure out how to download and install much of anything...  Oh, by the way, thanks for all your help and patience. That's not new info, both myself and another poster had mentioned that as soon as you said .xlsx

Did you try what I said about getting to downloads?I'm sorry, yes microsoft excel was mentioned. And I inadvertently cleared the download file.Ok.  Try downloading open office again.  Try not to zip through the download process, as it will usually ask you where you want to save it.  If you pay close attention, you can follow that to find where the installer is at.

Solve : installing itunes causes cpu to run at 50% continuously?

Answer»

Yesterday i tried to plug in my ipod nano second generation LIKE always and "nothing" itunes did not recognize it and i noticed my CPU was running at 50% even when i shut down everything, 50%.
I tried uninstalling itunes then reinstalling it, the same thing. I completely removed itunes and plugged in my ipod, of course nothing happened but CPU stayed at low %. as soon as i reinstalled itunes the CPU went back to 50%.
I like my ipod and WOULD like to remedy this situation but i am stumped! any help would be greatly appreciated! When you say "nothing" happened, do you mean nothing happened both on the computer and the iPod?  Is the iPod showing anything on the screen at all? (plugged in, or not plugged in).

You can also check in system profiler to see if the iPod is even showing as being hooked up on your usb port.  If you need help with that, I can assist.

Let us know though what exactly is happening.

Also, what OS are you on?  What type of computer are you using?  When you say the CPU is at 50%, where are you seeing this?I am using an HP Pavilion with Windows Vista, When i plugged in my ipod i did not see anything either on the computer or itunes, i checked the task manager and seen the 50% CPU usage.

I thought maybe itunes got corrupted or even the ipod, i always use "safely remove hardware" before disconnecting the ipod. and i tried the ipod on another computer and it was fine.

The ipod does show up on the device manager with this "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" i figured that was due to itunes not being on the computer.

as soon as i install itunes the CPU will go up to 50% and STAY that way even when i shut down itunes, and the ipod will not show up in itunes, if i run anything else like my DVD burner while itunes is installed the CPU will stay at 100% and i will hear the fan rev up an PC will shut itself down.

i have been fine for months until the other day, it is driving me crazy. thank for all the help i can use it.

What kind of iPod is it?  I would recommend putting it into disk mode (here's one example) http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363

Once it's in disk mode, HOOK it up to your computer and restore the iPod using iTunes.

This should help.Should itunes push your CPU to 50% even when its shut down?No.  iTunes shouldn't push your CPU to 50% at all unless you're on a really old machine.if you are running windows then;

start-->run-->services.msc
double click on Bonjour and disable.

next time you restart it should be fine. Quote from: freeforall on SEPTEMBER 29, 2009, 06:37:07 PM

Solve : Mac g3?

Answer»

Hi comda here,

I have a mac G3 and the other day i tried to boot it it started and while starting it froze. I tried to turn it on a few times after that i got a message to resart my computer by holding down the restart button. Then it does the same thing after i restart it, it freezes!?

Any help or suggestions will be useful
The computer components:

400MHz proccesor
512 mg RAM
cd rom
80 Gb hard drive
Hmm... I would place MONEY on the idea that your hard drive is starting to go out on you. Is it making an weird noises, such as clicking, or a grinding?no no i can here it turn on but then i can't here it no more it's as if if shuts downcomda,  Is the screen you're seeing that SAYS to restart a gray one that doesn't let you move your mouse or do anything?

If so, that's called a kernal panic.

I would highly recommend using your mac os x install disc (or classic install disc if you are on that) and try using disk utility to repair your hard drive.whats the disk utility and YES that screen has come up and i mentioned that earlier.Do you have a mac OS install disc?

If so, is it a classic disc (9.2 or earlier)
or a os X disc (10.0 or later)

If it's an OS X disc, just boot from the cd/dvd by holding down "c" when you boot and then go to utilities at the top menu, and choose "disk utility."

From there you can click on your hard drive on the left then click repair disk in the bottom right.

How do I know what is safe to delete, and how do I delete the things I don't need without deleting the things I do? In case you don't remember, I have an EMAC with a mac os x 10.4.11.

It's me again!! Was just going through everything in my trash and there is a lot of junk in there that I know I don't need. But there is quite a few thing that I don't have any idea what they are. They say something like "recovered file #16" and some other stuff that I don't understand at all. If I permanently delete them from my trash will it effect the things I have downloaded like Firefox and Adobe flash? Thanks for your help!

Coleen,

Unless you accidentally put some files in the trash, it's safe to delete them.

If you want help actually going through what may or may not be safe to delete, you're going to have to list them out here so we can help you decipher what everything is.those "recovered" files could be almost anything. you can safely just empty the trash and not worry about it. they are just files that the os thinks were lost, and most of the time they are just cache files that the creating apps deletes when you quit anyway. you will get them more often if you empty the trash right before shut down, or have a lot of apps open when you do a shut down and so they get killed as OPPOSED to completely quitting as they like (so i get them all the time.).Because these things are in the trash and your computer hasn't given you any FITS then it's safe to empty the trash.

Solve : reinstalling OS on ibook g4?

Answer»
Looks like I am fated to work on G4's.

OK, I got a G4 that needed a new hard drive and now that I have replaced it and reinstalled OSX I have TWO hard drives with information on them.

1. an external 500GB that I was told I could use to do the reinstall and
2. the replaced hard drive that I have placed in an enclosure.

The 500GB attaches via firewire but when I do a window comes up saying that I have plugged in a drive that can not be read, did I want to initialize or format.

The original hard drive comes up and is easily read.

My QUESTIONS are:

Do I initialize the 500GB drive? Will that allow me to restore information or will it wipe the drive? With the original drive, can I just copy over the information to the same folder on the new drive (ie Library to Library)?

Thanks
Kando,

You can click "initialize" safely without wiping the drive, but there's a good chance that if it's saying the drive can't be read, it won't mount at all.

If the hard drive has an Intel version of OS X on it, it cannot be used to install OS X on your G4.  My guess is that's the problem. Thanks, I don't think that was it. The 500gb Firewire external was supposed to have a backup from the original internal hard drive and that was how the restore was to be done. It is a PowerPC so no Intel. Don't know why it came up that way.

The original hard drive in the usb enclosure WORKED well enough that I was able to copy the Library and a COUPLE of other folders over to the new hard drive. I did not do any of the applications since that folder seemed to be missing. The user has those disks so no problem there. I think they are just going to reformat the 500gb and use it for storage.

Thanks for the answers.No problem!

Solve : old school g4 to new network?

Answer»

Ok, don't laugh at this one. A teacher brought in a G4 mac for use in her classroom. It is running 9.2. She wants to use it as an extra computer for writing, and non-intensive web surfing. Now, I have put in the proxy address that the school uses and connected it to the hub in the class. I get a good address, 10.30..., but when opening the browser, IE5 for Mac, I get a message that the connection can not be made. Is there some setting that I missed that is stopping IE from getting to the home page in spite of having a good IP address? DHCP is set, the proxy is set, the connection is good, what else is there?

I used Finder to check the network I get a good address for the school's network, I just can not get IE to connect to websites.

I get 10.30.178.80 which is in the correct range for the school and like I said, it is set to get the address via DHCP.

This is an ethernet and the the other computers in the class are all online as is the network printer.

What am I missing?

Thanksmight be that the network administrator needs to explicitly add new network computers to get them to access the web. (common practice, actually)No, that is not it. I am the one that can add computers to the school network. I do it all the time with teacher's laptops, macbooks, ibooks and the occasional ipod touch. I know the settings are correct, but I have not hooked up an apple computer this old to the network.

The wired computers just need the proxy set in their browser and the wireless just need the ssid and security password in the network settings and proxy in the browser.

Thanks for the reply, anyone else have an IDEA?Have u try different browers?. Firefox works great. I looked at early versions of Firefox, but, they REQUIRE OS 10 as far back as version 2.0.Would a version of Linux work on this machine? Still can't connect and hopefully that is an option.I know yellowdog linux works on powerpc processors.

My best RECOMMENDATION though would be to upgrade that machine to OS X.  You could easily find a cheap copy of 10.3 or 10.4 to put on it, and it'd be a lot easier than throwing yellow dog on it.
I will pass it on to the teacher, not SURE if she wants to spend money on it. She brought it to school to make room in her APARTMENT. Now she has a couple of Macbooks, more outlay of money may not be in the books.Ok, been a while but I had to post an update. The teacher did not want to purchase the new OS so I went looking for other options. Found out that Ubuntu was available for the PowerPC and downloaded an ISO. Installed it to the G4 and it is running like a charm.

Just an update and thanks for the answers. Thanks for the update.  Glad to hear they have ubuntu now for PPC.

Enjoy.

Solve : My Ipod Nano freezes!!!?

Answer»

I have a 3rd generation Ipod nano 8GB, and yesterday the BATTERY was empty so i plugged it into the USB on my laptop and on my computer it said that the device was not recognized and it wouldn't EVEN let me eject it so i had to take it out without ejecting it and on the Ipod it just showed the "Connected...Eject before disconnecting" screen and it wouldn't even shut off. Can someone please explain this to me so I know what to do if it happens again. Thanks all http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320?viewlocale=en_US]Ive tried that already, but my problem was that my iPod nano wouldnt shut off and it didn't come up on iTunes so I couldnt eject it that way. I got the problem fixed now (I just unplugged it from my computer and just let it sit until the battery was dead and plugged it in again and everything was FINE). But I just want to know why it did that and if there's something different I should do if it happens again. Thanks tho  No, there's nothing else you need to do if it happens again.  If it's truly frozen like that, you did the right thing.

If it starts happening frequently, it could be a bigger issue and you might want to take it into the apple store to get it repaired (free as long as it's under the one YEAR or applecare warranty).

It just happens sometimes, just like with computers.  Sometimes they freeze.Alright, thanks  I just wasn't sure what else to do cuz it's CAUSED problems before when I've disconnected the iPod before ejecting it. ThanksYeah, you definitely don't want to disconnect the iPod before ejecting it, unless you have to.

Doing that too much can damage files on your Nano, and, worst case, corrupt your library on your Nano causing you to restore it fresh and reload the music on it.

Solve : Itunes 9?

I recently down loaded Itunes 9.  When I tried to go to the Itunes store, it told me I needed a newer version of Safari.

When I tried to download the newer Safari.  It told me I had to get an update of Macos.

When I tried to download more RECENT MacOs, It said I needed 1.4 g of MEMORY which I did not have.

I have an EMac with limited memory.

Is there any way that I can go back to the previous version of Itunes which worked well for me.

Yeah. That's not how you uninstall programs. If you're using XP go to Control Panel - ADD/REMOVE. If Vista, go to Control Panel - Programs & FeaturesI finally got rid of itunes 9 and downloaded itunes 8.

But....I couldn't get it to install.  What do I do after downloading it?

By the way I am on a MAC....EMac.

Run the installer (double-click on the .exe file). Quote from: Allan on October 24, 2009, 07:03:59 AM
Run the installer (double-click on the .exe file).

OP said that they were on an eMac, so it's not an .exe file.

In order to install it you'll need to double click on the .dmg or .pkg file.  It should be on your desktop, depending on your preferences for downloaded files.

Once you open the file, click through the installer (continue, continue, continue...) and you should be set.

Yeah, unless you've used one (or were a big apple guy/gal) it PROBABLY wouldn't have come to mind.

Yes, macs can see windows formatting.

Macs can see Fat, fat32, exFat (I believe, but I COULD be wrong on exFat), and NTFS.

However, with NTFS, macs cannot write to the drives, just read them.  So have the external hard drive in windows FAT32 format and then it works in mac and windows. Right? Quote from: Helpmeh on October 20, 2009, 06:59:44 PM

Yes.  Or if you want to format it via Disk Utility on your mac, you can format as FAT and it'll work between windows and mac as WELL (and linux).

Yeah. I have a USB thumb drive, it's formatted as FAT32 (I did it on windows) and my friend's mac reads it easily!

Solve : Muting Apps in iTouch??

Solve : how to wipe hard drive on an Apple iBook G4 with no Mac OS X installation disk??

Answer»

I recently purchased an Apple iBook G4 at a yard SALE (w/o Mac OS X disks). I want to wipe out all the files from the previous owner, (w/o having to reinstall Mac OS X) but don't know how...any suggestions?Hi Richard

You Can Try create a New User and Delete the Old One.
Most of Times  files and Application are Related to User and not to All Users.

Hope That Helps Agreed.  The only other way you can remove everything is to have the original mac os install discs.

If you want to just delete the old account, open up system preferences, go to "Accounts," create a new account, then login with the new account.  Once you're in with the new account, you can go back to system preferences and delete the old account.I have a mac iBook G4, (w/OS X 10.4.11) with no installation disks. When I attempt to startup, it goes to a grey SCREEN and states several codes, including: "panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002E1Ec4): Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerBook6,7".

At the bottom of the screen, it also states: panic: We are HANGING here...

Can SOMEBODY please help me out here and point me in the right direction. I'd like to be able to repair this problem myself, if possible. Once again, the only way to fix your issue is with mac os install discs.

You could run a disk repair from another friend's mac, but it still won't fix the OS corruption issues you're having.

I would look on EBAY for some Tiger install cd's/dvd.  They should be fairly cheap there.

Ah, I remember back in the day..... and I'm quite pleasantly surprised the profile link picture is STILL CBMatt. I do suppose most of the members around here wouldn't realise how that came about.

And actually, I've already gotten the Mac, and for quite a reasonable price. I'm planning on using it solely as my recording computer; however, that process is taking a while to get into....
You see, my current laptop doesn't run Pro Tools (the recording software) very well at all (*SIGH*, Vista...), so I bought a MacBook Pro for that purpose. However, my Mbox (recording hardware) can't run on OS X 10.6.  :/

So, the plan is to dual-boot XP on my Mac. Problem solved. I can record, and all shall be good

Solve : Does iTunes force an upgrade from iOS 3.1.3 to 4??

Answer»

A dodgy third-party CHARGER just crashed my iPhone, and I can't restore USING iTunes (I get an error). I'm hoping to erase EVERYTHING on the phone (from the phone), then use iTunes to reinstall 3.1.3

But will it force an upgrade to iOS4 like it did from 3.1.2 to 3.1.3?

I SUPPOSE since my phone is near-unusable now I may not have MUCH choice but to upgrade :/ More than half my applications are in folders (Categories), but I can't "free" them because every time I try to use Categories it crashes lol. Hmmm....Not sure about this one...

You can plug into iTunes, click Restore iPod, then Sync it. Your iPhone backup will be implemented onto your iPhone. Nothing will be lost.

Solve : having trouble installing newest version of itunes?

Answer»

Hi, this is all new to me so here goes:

My ipod recently died so I got a new ONE.  I need to install the newest version of itunes for it to work.  I downloaded it and started to install it.  Got this message:  Service 'Bonjour SERVICES' failed to start.  Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.

I talked with a guy from itunes who told me it was because I have Mcaffe and need to disable my firewall.  I don't have Mcaffe.  So I disabled my firewall though from what I do have.  Still didn't work.

I tried uninstalling itunes and reinstalling; didn't work.

I tried running a Malware scan and removed anything it had and then tried to download and REINSTALL and that didn't work either.

I tried uninstalling/shutting down.  Redownloading/shutting down.  reinstalling-that didn't work either.

Called itunes again.  They guy told me to removed windows and then install and then re install windows then it will work.  He was rude and told me that would work but people are too lazy to back up files to do it.  I am not good at computers, I am a mom of 3 back in school and can't afford to lose documents and do not know how to do that properly...any help?

Thanks so much!  First of all, DO NOT uninstall Windows. That person you spoke with doesn't care about you or your system and is going to blame anything other than Apple software for the problem. And by the way, the bonjour service does not need to be running for itunes to be installed or work.

Second, are you logged on as the administrator? And what version of Windows are you running?

Third, you should also post on the Apple support FORUMS at the Apple website. Some of the folks there are very helpful - and you might even see the same problem listed by someone else. Thanks Allan.  I did read all of those posts on those forums and tried all of them, without success.  You are correct, there are many that are having the same problems as me but it seems like one of the answers to fix has helped them over come this problem, but it hasn't for me!

I have no plans on removing windows, looking for other options because I wouldn't even know how to do it!

Yes, I have been logged on as the administrator for all of my attempts to install itunes.

Someone has mentioned installing a windows clean up of some sort?  When I checked into this it looked like it might remove files I have so I am afraid to try.

Do you have any ideas?  I have posted this same question to some other sites for help and you are the first to respond so THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

forgot to mention I have Windows xpDo you have an older version of itunes installed? If so, go to ADD / REMOVE programs and uninstall it. While you are in ADD/REMOVE look for Bonjour and if you see it, uninstall it. Then reboot and let's go from there.

And which service pack version of XP are you running?I did have an older version of itunes.  I did remove and uninstalled it along with everything else that had to do with itunes.  I did have bonjour in there after attempting to install the new itunes and have uninstalled that as well.

I do want to mention that I read somewhere to uninstall 'Apple mobile device system' (or something similarly named to that) and then try to install and it actually worked.  Then went to plug ipod in and it wouldn't recognize it because I didn't have the 'Apple mobile device system' and suggested I uninstall and re install and it wouldn't work again.

I don't know what kind of xp I am running, how do I find that out?

I am at work right now but will run any ideas given to me when I get home tonight.

Thanks again You can download and reinstall Apple Mobile Device Support either from Apple or from here: http://apple-mobile-device-support.updatestar.com/

I provided that link because I'm having trouble getting to Apple support right now.

Double-click on My Computer to see what version of the OS you are running.I re read the post I had previously written and realized that it looks confusing.  After I downloaded the newer version of itunes, I went to install.  When I got to the service error : Bonjour services failed to start; abort or retry?, I went into add or remove programs and uninstalled the Apple Mobile Device support.  I then hit retry and it worked, I actually had downloaded the newest version of itunes, but it wouldn't let me use my ipod with it because I didn't have the Apple mobile device support.  It then told me to uninstall everything itunes and try to reinstall itunes again and when I did that I kept getting what I had originally got:  Service 'Bonjour Services' failed to start.  Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.  abort or retry?

So, do you think I can do what I did above and then install Apple mobile device support from the link you provided, or am I TOTALLY out in left field?  Okay, perhaps my posts were equally confusing.

Uninstall everything Apple (itunes, mobile support, bonjour).

Reboot

Download and install Bonjour and Apple Mobile Support.

Reboot

Download and install itunes.

Let us know what happens.Haven't tried that yet!  I will try that this evening and let you know how it goes.

Thanks againOk.  I uninstalled everything.

Rebooted

Downloaded and installed Bonjour

The link you sent me to install Apple mobile support was 29.99 or more which included some other software as well.  I tried finding the download of the Apple mobile support for free and every other site I went to said that it comes in the itunes install bundle and isn't available seperately.  So I was only able to download Bonjour.

Rebooted.

Downloaded itunes, went to install and had the same problem with the same error message.

Right when that was happening I got a message from my SecureIT which stated there was a virus alert which stated this:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple Mobile Device
Support\NetDrivers\WdfCoInstaller01009.dll

I also tried again to install by disabling my firewalls and that didn't work either.

You had asked before and I forgot to tell you; I have service pack 3Okay. Try everything again but this time before installing itunes disable your antivirus software (you can re-enable it immediately after the installation is complete). Then reboot and let's see if it works.K.  Sounds good.  I probably won't be able to get to it till Wed night.  I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks againYep. I remember I also had some trouble with itunes on an XP system a couple of years back and for the life of me can't remember what I had to do to get it up and running.

Solve : Invisible Facebook Icons?

Answer»

I just got a NEW Macbook Pro and for some reason when I log onto my facebook page, the icons are missing (the notifications ICON, the friend REQUEST icon, even the green CIRCLES indicating that a friend is online).  This problem is not a facebook problem, because when I log onto my facebook page on other computers, the icons are there, so it is unique to my laptop.  Any ideas on how to fix this problem? This sounds like a browser cache problem.

Which browser are you using? SAFARI?I'm using FirefoxHave a look here
