Dobereiner Periodic Table

Advantage: To predict the atomic mass of middle element in each triad.

Limitation: Dobereiner could identify only three triads.

Newland Periodic table

Advantage: Every eighth element had properties similar to that of first/co-related the properties of elements with their atomic mass.

Limitation: It was only applicable up to Calcium/only 56 elements and no future element.

Mendeleev's Periodic Table

Advantage: Elements with similar properties could be grouped / He predicted the existence of new elements that had not been discovered at that time.

Limitation: No fixed position for hydrogen/position of isotopes/ Atomic masses do not increase in a regular manner.

Does Anne Frank really love with Peter Van Daan? Why does she feel she can open her heart to Peter?

Answer»

A young girl who is anxiously waiting for her first periods needs emotional support and physical caring. But Anne gets neither. She is stranger to her mother who doesn’t know what Anne thinks about the most ordinary things. She does not get along with Margot very well either. She adored her father but the age difference prevented her from talking delicate matters like sex and sexuality with him. It is quite natural for a girl of Anne’s age to get attracted towards Peter Van Daan. In Peter she finds someone who can share her innermost feelings. They are young and can talk on sex and sexuality. They develop a relationship which just falls short of love. Anne feels it more intensely. She writes : “he gave me such a warm, tender look that I started glowing inside”. But Anne makes another confession: “Don’t think I’m in love because I’m not, but I do have the feeling that something beautiful is going to develop between Peter and me.” It is “a kind of friendship and a feeling of trust.”

Anne’s first love was Peter Schiff and not Peter Van Daan. She herself doesn’t know when “Peter Schiff and Peter Van Daan” have melted into one Peter. And now she longs for Peter van Daan desperately. This develops into an intimacy and trust. She is free to talk on sex and sexuality freely with Peter. And then the moment comes when she receives the first kiss on her left cheek and ear.

Anne continues this relationship inspite of the fact that she faces hostile reactions from everyone. Her mother stops her from meeting Peter so often. Mrs. Van Daan doesn’t favour such a relationship. What shocks Anne is the attitude of her father. He warns Anne not to go too far and restrain herself. Even Margot feels jealous of Anne’s relationship with Peter as she has no one to whom she can open out her heart and share her feelings.

Why is Anne's diary regarded as a valuable and authentic account of those times?

Answer»

Anne Frank’s diary is considered to be a valuable, historical record because neither it is fiction nor has it been composed after the incidents took place. It is the diary of someone who lived the history of the Second World War. She was an eye witness to the Holocaust, and she recorded her firsthand experience from a personal, political and social aspect. This record made by an ordinary citizen became a historical document because it was not a conscious project to document history taken up by a scholar. Rather it recounts the lived experiences of a young girl, living through the horrors of war and persecution on the grounds of ethnicity. As Anne didn’t share her feelings with anyone, she recorded them in her diary as if she were confiding to her diary named Kitty as it comforted her. She maintained it from June 12th, 1942 to August 1st, 1944. Initially, she only wrote about herself but later on she edited her diary for posterity after hearing a March 1944 radio broadcast from an exiled Dutch Government official who urged the Dutch people to keep journals and letters that would help to provide a record of what life was like under the Nazis.

The diary was considered to be authentic because Miep Gies had recovered five notebooks and some 300 loose papers containing Anne’s writings from the Secret Annexe shortly after the Frank’s arrest by the Nazis. She had hidden them in her desk and gave it to Otto Frank, the only survivor of the family, on his release from Auschwitz, who got the diary published.

Anne’s diary provides an invaluable insight into the times, lives and hardships. It shows a rare insight from a child’s point of view.

(c)  The speaker raised this objection because Antony was a good friend of Caesar & it was sure that he would speak ill of the conspirators & this could ignite the mob into frenzy.

(d)  Disapprove / Disagree

614.

Mark Antony, with the help of his oratory skills, succeeded in winning the mob over to his side. This led to the downfall of the conspirators. Write in 100-200 words, how with the power of words he could effect a change in his listeners.

Answer»

Mark Antony is a clever statesman and a good friend of Caesar. He is foresighted enough to judge that Brutus is a famous public figure and has already won the approval of the plebeians, instead of censure, after killing Caesar. Now, it is upto him to turn the tide, which threatens to flow on the side of the conspirators. Antony proves to be strong in all the ways Brutus proves to be weak. His impulsive, improvisatory nature serves him perfectly to persuade the conspirators that he is on their side, thus gaining leniency. Throughout his speech, he keeps repeating, ‘Brutus is an honorable man.’ “I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him,” whereas he does just the opposite. He is able to persuade the plebeians of the conspirators’ injustice and gains mass support. He contradicts the charges of Brutus that Caesar was ambitious by pointing out that Caesar had refused the crown thrice, had filled the coffers of Rome and wept for all Romans. Not too scrupulous to stoop to deceit and duplicity, as Brutus claims to be, Antony proves himself to be a consummate politician, using gestures and rhetoric to his advantage. He graphically displays all the stabs, Brutus and others have inflicted on Caesar’s body and uses Caesar’s body to exploit the plebeians emotionally. He responds to subtle cues, tailors his words very deftly and uses the most appropriate actions to incite the people. He deliberately thrusts the words ‘mutiny’ and ‘riot’ at them and gets the desired results.

Unlike Brutus, who prides himself on solely acting with respect to virtue and blinding himself to his personal concerns, Antony never separates his private affairs from his public actions. So, Antony’s eulogy at Caesar’s funeral is a master-stoke, and the mention of Caesar’s will that leaves money and his property to all Romans, acts as the final nail in the coffin of the conspirators. So Antony’s speech is a combination of wit, irony, sarcasm, pathos and satire.

"One needs to have an alert mind during crisis in order to overcome the odds. Michael's presence of mind was instrumental in saving Sebastian." Comment.

Answer»

During any crisis if your mind is alert then you can overcome the crisis easily. It is really important to maintain your cool rather than panicking. One should have mental agility instead of getting stressed. Getting stressed or panicking would only worsen the situation. We see in ‘Virtually True’ Michael played all the games that Sebastian told him to play and tried to rescue him, but was unsuccessful. Despite failing at rescuing Sebastian in so many attempts, he doesn’t lose heart and tries another time cool-headedly and using his presence of mind. While playing the last game War Zone, he pulled Sebastian up in the helicopter the moment he got a chance, thus saving his life. His presence of mind played a key role in saving Sebastian’s life.

Helen herself wrote ‘I came, I saw, I conquered’ as the first baby in the family does. She started walking when she was one-year-old. Her mother had just taken her out of the bath-tub and was holding her in her lap when she started walking towards the leaves that danced in the sunlight. Even her naming ceremony was a big event. She was not to be lightly named being the first baby in the family. She imitated every one and learnt talking at an early age. Everyone was attracted towards her due to these qualities.

Answer any one of the following questions in 100–120 words:Inspite of having a melodious voice and being a crowd puller, the nightingale turns out to be a loser and dies. How far is she responsible for her own downfall?

Answer»

In order to survive in the manipulative world today, it is important to have worldly wisdom. It is only our individuality and reasoning that can save us from getting duped and exploited by the people like frog. We must know our limitations and capabilities to be able to decide the course of our lives.

In the poem ‘Frog and the Nightingale’, the nightingale had unmatched singing talent. She had a soft, pleasant and melodious voice. Her popularity in the Bingle Bog left its creatures enraptured and made her discover her worth as a singer. It was the frog who commercially exploited her talent and made money. Driven by a desire to be a sensational singer, she sang for excessively long hours and lost out on sleep and thus exhausted herself. The nightingale was herself to blame for her tragic end. It was more of nightingale’s gullibility than the frog’s scheming that led to her downfall and death. We should beware of such type of greedy, money-minded, hypocritical, inconsiderate and selfish people.

622.

Give a character-sketch of Margot Frank, Anne’s elder sister.

Answer»

Margot Frank is Anne’s elder sister. She is three years elder to Anne. When her diary begins in 1942, Margot is sixteen years old. She is a foil to her restless and rebellious young sister, Anne. She is humble and is always at peace with herself. She knows how to please others, particularly the adults. Like her mother, Margot also fails to give an emotional support to her younger sister. She keeps a deliberate distance from her. She sometimes enters into argument with her. She is considered a perfect model and her mother expects Anne to emulate her. We find that it is Margot who is first called up by the Gastapo in Amesterdam. This is a signal for the Franks that the Nazis will arrest them and send them to their concentration camps. This forces Mr. Otto Frank to go into hiding in a secret annex with his family.

Anne easily sees the difference between the way her mother and the Van Daan deal with Margot and the way they deal with her. Margot fits in well with the whole family and other adults in the annex but Anne doesn’t. Anne writes : “Margot’s and mother’s personalities are so alien to me ....... . Margot is naturally good, kind and clever, perfection itself.”

Even Frank treats Margot as the “cleverest, the kindest, the prettiest and the best”. Anne is never taken seriously as she is always considered to be the clown and mischief-maker of the family. Margot is very studious. She sends her Latin lessons to a teacher regularly. Margot is alone and she is a little jealous of Anne’s passionate relationship with Peter. She writes to Anne. “I am just sorry I haven’t found anyone with whom to share my thoughts and feelings”.

623.

Give a character sketch of Anne’s mother, Edith Frank.

Answer»

Edith Frank or Anne’s mother is a highly sentimental, conservative, cold and critical character. She is a foil to her complex daughter Anne who shows maturity and understanding of people and things which are far beyond her years. Anne needs emotional support and understanding during the tumultuous times in the annex. Ironically, Edith Frank is lacking in such finer feelings. She fails to lend any emotional support to her younger daughter. Anne also doesn’t show much and love and sympathy with her mother during the early period of her hiding in the annex. She has a few kind words to say about Mrs. Edith Frank. An adolescent girl looks for love and sympathy. But she finds her mother lacking in such finer human feelings. She is cold, critical and uncaring towards Anne. Atleast, Anne thinks so about her mother during her early years in the annex. She is a source of Anne’s anger and frustration. Actually, she finds herself helpless as she doesn’t know how to express her love to her children. It is quite surprising that Anne seldomly comments on her mother’s positive traits or behaviour.

Later in life, Anne develops a better understanding of Mrs. Edith Frank as a mother and as a wife. Anne’s growing maturity makes her a little more objective towards her mother. She gets a more balanced perspective. She regrets her quick and rash judgement of her mother. Mrs. Edith Frank shows utter lack of understanding when she stops Anne from going upstairs to meet Peter. Mrs. Edith Frank’s inability to provide emotional support for her daughter leads Anne to find an outlet for expressing her innermost feeling. It is through ‘Kitty’ or her diary. Anne moves closer to Peter because he can share her feelings and talk about sex and sexuality.

Answer the following questions based on the prescribed novel text forextended reading in about 200–250 words:               The Diary of a Young GirlHow does Anne reveal that to be ill in hiding was dreadful?

Answer»

The Diary of a Young Girl

In the winter of 1944, the Russian Army was on the advance. The Nazis decided to take as many prisoners as possible, who were still capable of working, back to Germany. The health of the women prisoners was a primary factor. Edith may not go along. Margot and Anne are then considered.

At the end of October or the beginning of November 1944, Margot and Anne Frank are crammed into a crowded freight train bound for the concentration camp at Bergen - Belsen. Edith Frank is left behind at Auschwitz.

After an awful train journey lasting three days, Margot and Anne arrives at Bergen - Belsen. More and more prisoners are being sent to Bergen-Belsen from the other concentration camps.

In winter of 1944-1945, the situation at Bergen - Belsen deteriorates. There is little or no food and the sanitary conditions are dreadful. Many of the prisoners become ill. There was no treatment facility. Margot and Anne Frank come down with typhus. They both die just weeks before the camp is liberated.

626.

What problems do Margot and Anne face with regard to the way their parents treat them?

Answer»

Problems Margot and Anne face

— restricted atmosphere of Annexe- over protective parents

— Anne became tired of her parents' critical approach

— she wanted to be independent

— rebuked by mother and sister, had 'bust ups' with her mother

— Anne was a daddy’s girl – father tried to check her rebellious spirit but in vain

— could not confide in her mother, accused parents of deserting - no emotional support.

— mother's sarcasm and quick temper had been the source of Anne's anger and depression

— whereas Margot obliged to parents and received care, support and privilege from both

— they did not talk about their personal feelings with their parents because they thought that they would not understand

— wanted their parents to acknowledge their maturity and independence of spirit liked to be treated as adults

— expected a cordial approach and understanding from them

Detailed Answer :

Margot and Anne both had become tired of their parents in spite of the fact that they still loved them. They wanted to make their own decisions without being chaperoned by their parents. Their parents were not so strict and let them read everything, but Margot and Anne were sick and tired of having to listen to their comments all day long. The customary ritual of giving them little kisses at all hours of the day was also quite tiresome to these girls, who were almost on the threshold of adulthood. The cute nicknames seemed affected. They would have liked nothing better than to get a break from their parents. Margot and Anne did not talk about all this to their parents because they felt that their parents would fail to understand. These young women were growing up with their own set of opinions, ideals and principles. Therefore, they wanted their parents to acknowledge their maturity and independence of spirit, taking them as young adults rather than children.

Answer the following questions based on the prescribed novel text forextended reading in about 200–250 words:                        The Story of My lifeHow did Helen take the preliminary and final examinations for Radcliffe college?

Answer»

                              The Story of My life

On the 29th and 30th of June, 1899, Helen took her final examinations for Radcliffe. Mr. Eugene C. Vining, an instructor at the Perkins Institution for the Blind, was employed to copy the papers for her in American Braille. The Braille worked well enough in the languages. It did not work well in the case of geometry and algebra. Helen was badly perplexed because she had used only the English Braille in her algebra. The symbols in the American Braille were different from those in the English Braille. Helen was not familiar with its signs. Mr. Keith had relied too much on her ability to solve problems mentally, so she was very slow in her work. She had to read the examples repeatedly to understand what she was required to do. She was not sure if she really read  the signs correctly. Mr. Keith could not help her. Helen remained confused. The administrative board of Radcliffe made the examination very difficult for her, knowingly or unknowingly. However, she overcame all obstacles and cleared her exams.

On hearing a noise I ran outside my house........Write a story in about 200 to 250 words on the following clue.

Answer»

The Judgement

On hearing a noise, I ran outside. I saw two men were quarreling and fighting. When the people around asked them the cause of their quarrel, the first man said, “This man has taken my dog.” The second man said, “I got it! It is mine!”. I said “fighting is not the solution of the problem.” “It is not good to fight on the street in this way”. They said, “Then what should we do.” I said, “Let’s go to Shyam who is the most intelligent man in the village and he had solved many such kind of problems.” Everybody said, “Yes, let’s go there.”

Shyam was reading a newspaper when we told him the matter. He said, “cut the dog and give the two halves to the men.”. He asked the second man, “Do you agree. He said “Yes”. Let the dog die, If I don’t get it. But the first man said, “The dog will die if it will be cut down, please don’t cut it, give it to him.” Shyam said, “give the dog to the first man because he is the owner.” All said, “How can you say?”, “Simply”. The real owner has the real affection with the dog”. “The second man didn’t care that the dog be alive or dead but the first man loved his dog so he was ready to sacrifice it in order to save his life.”

All appreciated the wisdom of Shyam. By using his wit and wisdom he simply solved such a complex problem.

Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow. 1. The world’s first bookless library has been set up in the state of Texas in the United States. Unlike the rows upon rows of books that are found in a conventional library anywhere in the world, at the bookless library there are high-tech gadgets that have replaced the books as found in other libraries. 2. The borrowers of books from the high-tech bookless library have a different set of rules to follow when borrowing books. Instead of taking home books for reading, the members of the library, who are registered residents of the south Texas county of Bexar, can now access their choice of reading matter from e-readers. Also, instead of having to pay a fee for membership of the library and for borrowing books and other facilities, the members can borrow reading matter from the bookless library for free. 3. That the services of this library have found favour with its readers is clearly visible from the growing readership numbers of this library. Since its start in September, the county’s 1.7 million residents have been able to check out and take home the machines for reading purposes and accessing the catalogue. They are also able to use their own devices to check out and access the catalogue of the library. The BiblioTech of 1.5 million books, currently has 600 e-readers, 200 pre-loaded enhanced e-readers for children and 48 computer stations for use by its readers. In addition, there are ten laptops, and 40 tablets available on the premises for use by readers. 4. Not satisfied with simply providing e-reading services, the BiblioTech has created a list of higher ambitions for itself. The most prominent of these include their ambition to give the county’s residents the necessary tools to thrive as citizens of the 21st century. For them a well-connected citizen of this century is one who strives for enhancing his education and literacy and promoting reading as a recreation. 5. As part of reader services at the BiblioTech, its Special Project Co-ordinator, Laura Cole comments that the library authorities wanted to create the best and most costeffective way of providing library services. This was specially suitable for the Texas 2 county’s residents as the population here is geographically distanced from existing services. In fact, prior to the arrival of this digitalized service, there has never been a public library or a book store in the area. Thus, a digital alternative in their midst was an obvious and necessary choice. Geography doesn’t matter if your library is in the clouds’, adds Laura Cole, referring to the ‘cloud’ system where the books of the library are stored online. 6. Answering queries about readers’ concerns that library users may feel put off by technology. Cole is proud to concur that her staff are willing to dedicate their time to help readers and visitors, who find it difficult to handle the system on their own. Hence, readers do not feel intimated by the gadgetry and feel empowered to be able to access books according to this novel system of procuring reading matter. 7. Even replacement costs for damages or breakdowns have been factored into the working system of the library. Thus, readers are not turned away from the library doors simply because the system is not functioning on any particular day. To prevent thefts from depleting their stocks, the devices are geared in such a way that users cannot access its internet once they leave the premises of the library. On the basis of your reading of the passage, answer the following questions by choosing the best of the given choices (a) The borrowers in a high-tech library have to follow(i) a different set of rules(ii) the same set of rules(iii) absolutely no rules(iv) rules of their own making(b) The bookless library is located in (i) the Texas county of Biblio tech (ii) the Texas county of Bexar (iii) the city of middle USA (iv) Washington USA (c) The bookless library is highly suitable to this county because (i) the public library is not functioning well (ii) the people here are avid readers (iii) there is plenty of reading matter in this library (iv) it is geographically distanced from existing library services (d) Which of these is not according to the passage (i) The high tech library is the best and cost effective way of producing books for reading (ii) Library users sometimes feel put off by technology (iii) Users are not able to access the internet once they leave the library (iv) The staff of the library is unsupportive
