Define : (a) Osmosis (b) Freezing point |
Answer» (a) Osmosis : A process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a semi-permeable memebrane concentrated one. When the membrane permits the solvent molecules to come out through the membrane, it is called exosmosis. When the membrane permits the solvent molecules to enter inside, it is called endosmosis. The minimum excess pressure that has to be applied on the solution to prevent the entry of the solvent into the solution through the semi-permeable membrane is called the osmotic pressure. (b) Freezing point : Freezing point of a substance is the temperature at which the solid and liquid forms of a substance are in equilibrium i.e., solid and liquid form of a substance have same vapour pressure Freezing point of the solution is always lower than that of pure solvent. the decrease in freezing point is known as depression in freezing point. |

Explain any two chemical methods of food preservation. |
Answer» Chemical methods : Chemically presevation can be done by adding sugar, salt or vinegar in food Chemicals like sodium benoate, salts or sorbic acid and propionic acid etc. are used as preservatives. (a) Preservation by addition of sugar and then applying heat is highly important method in case of fruits to prepare jams, jellies and marmalades, This method is simple, cheap and easy to adopt. (b) Salting is also used to control the growth of fungus or micro-organisums in food storing. It is mainly used in preparation of pickles of raw mango, lemon, chillies, etc., and to preserve fish products. The anti-microbial activity of common salt is due to osmosis, a cell loses water, dies or remains dormant. It is an oldest method to preserve food. |

By method, show that the quadrilateral with vertices A(1,2,-1), B(8,-3,-4), C(5,-1,1),D(-2,1,4) is a parallelogram. |
Answer» Let `bar(a)=i+2hat(j)-k, bar(b)=8i-3j-4k,` `bar(c)=5i-4j+k, d=-2i+j+4k`, Let `bar(e)=(bar(a)+bar(c))/(2)=3i-j` ...(1) Let `bar(f)=(bar(b)+d)/(2)=3i-j` ...(2) From equation (1) and (2), we get `bar(e)=bar(f)` This shows that the point `E(bar(e))` is the midpoint of diagonals AC and BD . Therefore, diagonals AC and BD bisect each other at the point E(e). `:.` The quadrilateral ABCD is a parallelogram. Hence Proved. |

Explain the formatin of stationary wave by analytical method. Show that nodes and antinodes are equally spaced in a stationary wave. The speed limit for a vehicle on road is 120 km/hr. A policeman detects a drop of 10 % in the pitch of horn of a car as it passes him. Is the policeman justified in punishing the car driver for crossing the speed limit ? ( Given : Velocity of sound = 340 m/s ) |
Answer» conditions for antinodes : when ` A = pm 2 a ` , the particles are these points vibrate with maximum amplitude which are called antinodes. We have ` A = 2a cos "" ( 2pi x ) / ( lamda) ` ` therefore pm 2 a = 2a cos "" ( 2 pi x ) /( lamda ) ` ` therefore cos "" ( 2pi x ) /( lamda) = pm 1 ` ` therefore ( 2pi x ) /( lamda ) = 0, pi, 2pi,...... ` ` therefore x = ( lamda p) /( 2 ) = p(( lamda ) /( 2 )) ` where p = 0, 1, 2 ............. For x = 0 , ` ( lamda) /( 2 ) , lamda , ( 3lamda) /( 2 ) `.... antinodes are prouduced. The distance between any two successive antinodes is ` ( lamda ) / ( 2 ) ` Condition for nodes : When A = 0 the particles at these points are permanently at rest which are called nodes. We have, ` A = 2a cos "" ( 2pi x ) / ( x ) ` ` 2a cos (( 2pi x ) /( lamda ) ) = 0 ` ` therefore cos (( 2pi x ) /( lamda ) ) = 0 ` `( 2 pi x ) /( lamda ) = (pi) / ( 2 ), ( 3pi ) /( 2 ), ( 5pi ) /(2) `.... ` x = ( 2P - 1 ) ( lamda)/( 4 ) ` Where P = 1, 2 , ............ For ` x = ( lamda ) /( 4 ) , ( 3lamda ) / ( 4 ), ( 5lamda ) / ( 4 ) .... ` nodes are produced The distance between any two successive nodes is ` ( lamda ) /( 2 ) ` The distance between any two adjacent antinode is ` ( lamda ) /( 4 ) `. Hence, in stationary waves, the nodes and antinodes are equispaced. Numerical : Given : ` " " n_ 2 = n _ 1 - 10 % n _ 1 , v= 340 m//s ` `" " n _ 2 = n _ 1 - ( 1)/( 10) n _ 1 = ( 9 ) /( 10 ) n _ 1 ` When the car approaches the policeman, apparent fequency is ` n _ 1 = ( v + v _ 0 ) /( v - v _s ) xx n " " `... (i) where ` v _ 0 = 0 ` and when the car passes the policeman apparent fequency is ` n _ 2 = ( v - v _ 0 )/( v + v _ s ) xx n " " ` ... (ii) where, ` v _ 0 = 0 ` and `v _ s ` is the speed of car. On dividing equation (i) by (ii) ` therefore " " ( n_ 1 ) /( n _ 2 ) = ( v + v _ s ) /( v - v _ s ) ` ` therefore ( n _ 1 )/((9 ) / ( 10 ) n _ 1 ) = ( 340 + v _ s ) /( 340 - v _ s ) ` ` therefore ( 10 )/( 9 ) = ( 340 + v _ s ) /( 340 - v _ s ) ` ` v _ s = 17.89 ` m/s ` = 64.42 km//hr ` ( speed of car ) The speed limit is 120 km/hr whereas the speed of car is 64.42 km/hr. Hence the policeman is not justified in his action. |

Define practical simple pendulum. Show that motion of bob of pendulum with small amplitude is linear S.H.M. Hence obtain an expression for its period. What are the factors on which its period depends ? The total free surface energy of a liquid drop is ` pi sqrt 2 ` times the surface tensin of the liquid. Calculate the diameter of the drop in S.I unit. |
Answer» Factors on which its period depends are : (a) Period of simple pendulum is directly proportional to the square root of its length i.e., ` " " T prop sqrt L ` ( b ) Period of simple pendulum is inversely proportional to the square root of acceleration due to gravity. i.e., ` T prop ( 1 ) /( sqrt g ) ` Numerical : Given : ` " "E = pi sqrt 2 T ` ` E = T Delta A ` ` E = 4pi r ^ 2 T" " [ because Delta A = 4pi r ^ 2 ] ` ` pi sqrt 2 T = 4pi r ^ 2 T ` ` 2 sqrt 2 r^ 2 = 1 ` ` therefore " " r ^ 2 = ( 1 ) /( 2 sqrt 2 ) ` ` rArr r = (( 1 )/ ( 2 sqrt 2 ))^ ( 1//2) = 0.5946 ` ` therefore ` Diametre , ` d = 2 r ` ` = 2 xx 0.5946 ` ` = 1.1893 m ` |
