Solve : Wondershare Time Freeze- free for limited time?

Answer»

I FOUND this offer over at ghacks and thought I would share .I am not SURE how long the promotion is going to last . here is the promotion page http://www.disk-utilities.com/time-freeze/ and the article from ghacks http://www.ghacks.net/2010/04/30/free-wondershare-time-freeze/ I have been using this for a few day`s now and it works really well. one thing I noticed is that you do not NEED to have the program running in the taskbar for it to work.I found the ICON in my taskbar was annoying. when you restart your computer you have the option to protect your system or start the system normally so there is no need to have that icon running in your taskbar. I forgot to mention if you do use this and have your computer in protected mode Anything you DOWNLOAD will be lost on reboot so save your downloads to another drive or reboot into your OS without timefreeze and then download. another really good program like this is Shadow Defender it gives you the ability to set folders that you don`t want protected.Shadow Defender is not free at the moment it`s35$.If ever I find it free, legally I will post back.

Solve : Best Parental Control- Which??

Answer»

Best Parental CONTROL- Which?
My Personal recommendation.

Our subject matter today is about parental control of Internet computers.

Which is the best method of parental control?
One approach is that if your children are mature and have been properly trained by you it should not be necessary to impose controls on them. However, there is a fallacy in this line of reasoning. How?

Most of us with average intelligence and experience do not become 'streetwise' until somewhere into our mid-20s. As far as the Internet is concerned, 'streetwise' means the ability to distinguish between frond and HONESTY when dealing with strangers.

Your teenagers have been subject to abuse his speech and behavior by their fellow students at school. But this does not fully qualify them to deal with all the kinds of things they can find in a world where people can hide their identities.

The Internet is such a world. Might as well send your children to some foreign country where there is no American CONSULATE, rather than let them have free reign of the Internet. Well, yes ,that is an exaggeration. The Internet is not quite that dangerous if you take reasonable steps to implement the right kind of software controls.

One approach is to make some modifications to your operating system network features. You can use a hosts file to restrict access to certain websites. The difficulty with this is that there are news websites springing up all the time with content that you don't want.

Another approach is to buy a commercial package of software that already has a huge list of forbidden sites. From time to time they will update this list for you and it will be stored in your computer.

Another method is to get into your router and modify some settings into your router to prevent access to certain addresses. But this also has the limitation that you have to update the list from time to time. The principal advantage of using your router as a filter is that it will protect all the computers that access access the router.

Of course, before you implement any of these methods, you need to explain to the youngsters in your house why you're doing that this and you need to have their approval and understanding of what you're doing. Otherwise they will find ways to circumvent the filters you put in place. There is no software available that teaches your children respect for your wisdom. That job is up to you.

Now, let's get to the point of what you can do with commercial software. First of all, a lot of this commercial software that has been made is just a waste of your money. It is overpriced and the companies are under funded. They do not have a viable business plan that will keep them going as a successful business. You need to pick a company that already has a successful Internet presence and can afford to subsidize a low-cost product that will suit your needs.

So my recommendation is this..Pick a company that already has a broad spectrum of products and services and has been in business for some time. Building filters to block UNDESIRABLE sites is not Rocket Science. And Many business firms have already found practical solutions to the problem of keeping employees off of sites that have nothing to do with business activity. This USUALLY means that all the computers in the system have to go through one router which has built into it some feature to block out any number of sites. This can be done by using only one DNS provider.
Just one of many such special subscription DNS providers goes by the name of Open DNS. They have both free and paid services.

Here is some information about how you can use their service for just $10 a year for home users. They will allow you to use up to 5 computers to access a private DNS server that specifies precisely what you want and don't want on your home computers. Used correctly, this can be a very effective parental control. It is flexible enough to adjust to the needs of the youngsters in your household.

This is not an advertisement. I do not work for them.
This is a recommendation.

http://www.opendns.com/start/

This is a real company.
OpenDNS

Comments welcome. OpenDNS is good for all users and goes way beyond parental controls. my training provider uses open dns and the also have resteced you running scrits and right clicking , that must of took some work to do

I recently bought a Kodak from Argos, a C142, cost £59.99. 10 megapixels, but quite honestly she should wait till she starts and ask the tutor. There are lots of "best buys" depending on what you want it to do. Some features MIGHT suit a "snapper" but be useless for a photography student.
Yeah I would ask the teacher to help you decided. He/she may be able to get a discount for you.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 05, 2010, 11:55:00 AM

Yeah I would ask the teacher to help you decided. He/she may be able to get a discount for you.

i agree but you try telling a teenager that. lol

she wants one and wants it now! if only schools would teach more academic subjects and less "hobbies". When I was a kid (and a teenager) they had this word, I believe it has fallen into DISUSE.. it's "no".
+ 1 Salmon...I would recommend a Canon PowerShot SX20 IS or G11. They have the manual settings of an SLR and the simplicity of a point-and-shoot. Plus you can add a flash and/or lenses to them if she really gets into it.Quote from: michaewlewis on July 09, 2010, 09:47:41 AM

Quote from: The original question
under £100

This is a young teenager in high school.
The number of models of digital cameras on the market is mind-numbing. So, all I can suggest is do some shopping at your preferred vendors to LOOK at some cameras and, if you want to spend some time searching through reviews, do a Google search on digital camera reviews and browse through some camera review websites.

And, keep in mind, the skill she develops with whatever model of camera she's using, not the brand or model of camera, is probably the biggest factor is getting good pictures.I agree that calling the teacher for a recommendation is the best thing to do. Even if she hasn't started the class yet, most teachers would be happy to talk to future students.

And frankly, someone who teaches a photography class probably knows more about cameras than anyone on this forum.Since the student is likely a junior or senior in high school that is looking at photography for a hobby, and not just something to capture random shots, a cheap ($150) camera isn't going to cut it for most of what she will be learning in class. She will need something with more control than a simple point-and-shoot camera if she wants to learn anything about photography.
The reasons I recommended the more expensive cameras was because they would provide a better start than a point-and-shoot. If she really gets into it, she may want to trade up after a while for an SLR. The ones I pointed out have some of the same features as an SLR, but are quite a bit cheaper.Well, I'm very new hear & am hanging around for a response to my thread & saw this one, thought I'd come reply. I am an avid picture taker, but a terrible camera owner. Everytime I get one it ends up dissapointing me in some way. (Trying to save money & buy a cheaper one usually) But from my experience, there are only two brands I would ever own, Canon & Nikon. Depending on what she needs for class, go a step up. Trust me, as soon as you start learning you want bigger & better. But those are my two brands suggestions.

I've never understood how the heck you can game with a laptop... I mean, I can almost see it with a trackpoint (I love those things) but a touchpad would take a lot of practice. When I wanted to game with my laptop (before I upgraded my desktop) I always hooked up a wireless MOUSE. Actually, come to think of it, I used the wireless mouse even for desktop stuff... I've never realyl liked touchpads.

I miss the trackpoint

Solve : SpywareBlaster 4.4 released!?

Answer»

It's time to update SpywareBlaster.

From here: SpywareBlaster 4.4 released!

Quote

Prevent the installation of spyware, malware, and other potentially unwanted software!

New in this version:
-Improved browser detection
-Tweaks to support for Windows XP/Vista/7
-Fixes rare issues checking for updates via HTTPS servers
-Improved enabling AutoUpdate on Windows XP Limited Accounts
-Improved enabling AutoUpdate while running other security software that restricts permissions / blocks SYSTEM changes
-Improved AutoUpdate license entry
-Numerous additional bug fixes, optimizations, and tweaks

This 4.4 release provides enhanced protection, performance, and bug fixes.

UPDATING OPTIONS IN SPYWAREBLASTER
SpywareBlaster still offers the built-in Check for Updates feature. This feature is completely free and allows you to keep up-to-date by clicking on a button in the SpywareBlaster interface.

SpywareBlaster also offers SpywareBlaster AutoUpdate - a sleek, automated, no-nonsense updating solution. Just SET it up, and AutoUpdate will check at every system boot for the latest updates and ENABLE the newest protection (other options are available).

As much as we would like to provide auto-updating functionality for free, costs are simply too great to make it feasible. AutoUpdate functionality is $9.95 (US) per year, which helps to cover the bandwidth costs. The Check for Updates FUNCTION remains completely free, as does SpywareBlaster. You only need to pay if you wish to have the extra convenience of AutoUpdate.

SpywareBlaster is freeware.
Download the latest version here:

Solve : Community-Powered Software for Windows??

Answer»

Yes!!!

SlimWare Utilities has released a couple of PRETTY cool "Cloud" based utilities for optimizing and cleaning up Windows based Operating SYSTEMS.

I have TRIED (and will keep) both SlimComputer and SlimCleaner. They are feature packed and will give any user the ability to manage their computers performance.

I have not used SlimDrivers yet as I personally don't FEEL that RELYING on third party software to manage my drivers is a good thing. There are too many operating systems and configurations. Updating a driver when it shouldn't be can have disastrous results. If you do decide to use this then take precautions and back-up your personal data before hand.

Solve : PE Guard?

Answer»

PE Guard is a free tool that protects your computer from virus or malicious programs. It does so by preventing:

* A virus / program trying to copy itself to your system. (PowerGuard Mode)
* A virus / program trying to inject itself into one of your PE(Portable Executeable) files.
* Any rootkit / program trying to write a NEW Driver(.sys) file in your system. (PowerGuard Mode)

Once installed, click Next when the First run wizard DIALOG box appears. Once the wizard is complete, HIT Finish.

This program has no GUI(Graphics User Interface) and WORKS directly from the system tray. There are two modes, Power GUARD and Normal GUARD. It is recommended that you let it run in Power GUARD mode for maximum security.

Now lets talk about it’s daily life usage. You insert a virus infected USB flash drive and viruses such as autorun virus and others try to copy themselves to the computer. Once the virus infects your computer they try to inject themselves into as many executable files as possible.

There are two modes, Power GUARD and Normal GUARD. It is recommended that you let it run in Power GUARD mode for maximum security.

This program makes sure both actions taken by the virus are stopped immediately. In other words you can say that this program provides first line of defense against viruses. download: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/PE-GUARD.shtml

Something any antivirus program can prevent.

Without the fatty gristle- AKA- blacklists.

This is a good start to an effective method of stopping an infection by stopping it AT the infection vector. AV programs ALL work through "blacklists"; if a program is on the blacklist, it's a virus. Warranted, these blacklists have been given fancy names like "heuristic analysis" Or the more popular "Signature" but it's still a blacklist. The problem is that they have oversimplified the issue of malware; what should be analyzed with heuristics is NOT the program itself but rather what the program does; almost all malware does certain things, such as installing itself in the registry, making sure satellite processes are still alive, monitoring registry keys, etc. Rather then examining the executable for a specific pattern of bytes, instead a far more agressive approach involving attaching to the process as a Debugger and examining it's code flow.Quote from: bobgar34 on September 19, 2009, 01:18:34 PM

Solve : Great Site for Custom Built PCs?

Answer»

Hey,

I recently needed to buy a new pc and wanted to customise my own. So I had a search around and i found this great site called CosCom.

The site itself looks quite plain but I went ahead and ordered a custom pc (for a very nice low price). When you order there is no payment involved until they have checked your custom order for compatibility. Once they checked my order, which they did very fast, I received an email invoice for the payment. I thought this was a great service as it adds the assurance of an experienced person.

Once I paid the invoice I received the pc within a week, this was impressive as it was a completley custom built pc. The computer itself was great, it was fast and didn't come with all the annoying programs that big companies install.

They have a uk support line and an online contact form.

Check out their website: http://www.coscom-pcs.co.uk/

Duncan CowanTheir website leaves a lot to be desired, it really doesn't INSTIL trust in them as a company IMO. Their choice of PSUs is, again IMO, terrible in a lot of systems, using unknown/no-name/generic/low quality units as well as cases. I certainly wouldn't spec any systems the way they have, but that's somewhat of a personal choice.
How was the cabling? Have you had to contact support? If so, how were they?
What kind of system did you get, if you don't mind me asking?
I'm always curious to hear about companies like these as I'd be more than happy to spread the word.Smells like Spam...From what I can tell they are a fairly new company and are still updating their website. I will agree that their PSU choices are quite slim, covering only the low end ones and the very expenive high end ones, however i have heard that the CIT gold units are quite reliable based on reviews I have read. Also I thought that their CASE choices were quite GOOD, ranging from cheap ones to expensive ones with ones in the middle.
By spec the systems do you mean the choices of components or the custom packages specs??

The cabling, although I am not an expert was quite good, it was all tucked away behind the motherboard tray and was tied up with cable ties.
I have not had to contact customer support, and i hopefully wont have to, however the number is a local UK number.

My system was:
CM Storm Scout Midi Tower
Asus M4N75TD nForce 750a Motherboard (DDR3 RAM) - AMD
AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.40 Ghz
Thermaltake CL-P0456 Big Typhoon 14 Pro
Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 - 1GB
Thermaltake 650W W0104 Toughpower
Kingston HyperX 2GB 1600MHz CL9 DDR3
Samsung SH-S223L 22X Lightscribe DVD Drive
Western Digital 1TB Caviar Green SATAII Hard Drive
No Second Hard Drive
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium [64bit]
No Monitor
TP-Link Wireless N Adapter
Creative SoundBlaster X-FI Xtreme Audio Sound Card

For just over £800, which i thought was quite good value as even buying the parts myself would cost me that much or more!

Patio: Definetley not spam, not unless im writing this from an imaginary computer I've got to be honest - until I looked up your previous posts I also thought it might be spam. But I now believe it's not.Haha, perhaps i was a little over enthusiastic in my first post, i must admit that there are some downsides to the company. Namely the site, but as i say I have noticed that they are still adding things so who knows..?My apologies Duncan...Welcome Aboard...

(Understand the nature of Forums...we see alot of this )Haha, i understand entirley. Its my first review so I appologise for it not being great!Well, each to their own. I would just never buy anything made by CIT, whether it's a PSU or a case. Do you have a link to the good reviews of the CIT Gold units? I'd be interested to read them.
I may have been a little hasty judging their case choices - I looked through a few of their systems and saw CIT and the Thermaltake Level 10, and jumped the gun. The rest of their choices seem OK. The CIT I jumped on because it's CIT, and the Thermaltake partly because it's Thermaltake, partly because it's a terrible case, and partly because the system they have in that case will overheat.

By spec the systems, I meant their choice of prebuilt systems - none of them seem to jump ut at me as being particularly good value for money, and their high-end extreme build just isn't that extreme.
It's great to see a company with a "real" UK number for support, that's one major plus I will give them without hesitation.

Again, I'm not trying to be overly negative although I may come across that way - I'm just interested from a personal and professional point of view. Consider me biased if you like, I suppose I might be, but I'm really not trying to be.Im not sure they are at all overpriced, i went through a package and using amazon put together one and it was around the same amount, considering your getting it built and all the support, i think thats quite good.

Personally, I'd take Calum's advice on a piece of Computer hardware a lot faster then any number of anonymous reviewers. Especially since in this case the anonymous reviewers clearly are unaware of the major flaw with most CIT products- they are cheap. They instead consider this a advantage. Certainly you should go for the best price point but there comes a time when you should wonder how reliable something is when it costs less then half as much as equivalent models from other vendors.

Calum builds PCs for a living himself He knows his stuff when it comes to things like that There could be something being OVERLOOKED though. (maybe they change the case or add more fans or something)

Their website leaves a lot to be desired

I like it, makes me feel a lot better about mine, Anonymous PSU reviews really aren't worth much - only trust PSU reviews with a proper testing methodology, such as the reviews at [H] and johnnyguru. See this for some more details.
Regarding the case, I've built that system with a Megahalems, push/pull Sharkoon 2000rpm fans, and one 5970. The 5970 ran very hot, as did the CPU - although in that build the CPU was at 4GHz, not stock. I thought I read that it was overclocked, in which case the CPU will be very cool (with a heatsink that's totally overkill, no need for an aftermarket cooler on a Gulftown at stock speeds) but the Rampage III will run very hot, as will the two 5970s and the HDDs. So, I do apologise, that's my mistake for reading too quickly.
As for the overpriced comment, I wouldn't want to link to the company I work for's setups as some might consider it spam, but just comparing their range vs. "ours" they don't stack up too well IMO. As I said above though, I could certainly be biased, and I really don't mean to give offence or be seen as bashing anyone else, I'm just giving my own opinion.Quote from: duncan _c on September 07, 2010, 03:05:49 PM

Don't let the local UK number fool you. I work in Gabon and if you wanted to call me at my desk right now I will give you a UK land line number.

In the UK (I expect this works elsewhere) you can rent a UK number and have calls to it connect to a phone line anywhere in the world.

However...

That phone number is a Liverpool / Merseyside phone number, Their registered address is also in Liverpool.

CosCom
23 North Road
Liverpool
Merseyside
L19 0LP

That company is listed in a number of Liverpool / Merseyside business directories.

Google Maps Street View shows a leafy residential street in Cressignton Park, Garston.

The local authority received a planning application for that address in the name of Mrs Hilary Cowan, dated 17 March 2009

Quote
To carry out alterations to rear and side elevation, incorporating new patio door raised deck at rear, installation of 2 no. rooflights at side elevation, removal of staircase at rear and erection of GLAZED canopy at rear.

Hilary also rents out a fisherman's cottage in Wester Ross, Scotland.

A people search also reveals Peter Cowan age 50-54 at the L19 address.

Solve : Kingston 4GB DataTraveler Generation 3 (G3) USB Flash Drive at low price?

Answer»

I hesitated to mention a small item like this in this section of the forum but where else would I put it?

Anyway, buy.com has this Kingston 4GB DataTraveler Generation 3 (G3) USB Flash Drive (White & Gray) for $6.95 and shipping is free. I don't know whether this is a temporary deal at this price and with the free shipping.

I don't even own this flash drive; I'm just posting the topic because it's a good buy. I have owned a 2GB Kingston DataTraveler and liked it. Unfortunately, I lost it. But, I don't think any technical review of the product is necessary. It's just a flash drive. However, I have a favorable opinion of the Kingston brand, having used Kingston RAM over the years and the 2GB flash drive previously mentioned. The prices on flash drives are amazing. I just bought a 4 GB Sandisk flash drive at Walmart for $9.95. I didn't need it, but I couldn't pass up a deal like that.I bought a Kingston Data Traveler Mini 4 GB for 5.99 UK pounds in my local BRANCH of Staples about 6 months ago. They were on offer then, but now this is the regular price. I see that 16 GB drives are now well under 20 uk pounds from some online suppliers. My first flash drive was 128 MB and cost 15 pounds quite a few years ago now. We now have the following flash drives at our house

128 MB ... can't bring myself to throw it away.
1 GB - Girlfriend uses to take jpegs to photo printing shop
1 GB - Bootable. Grub4dos, can boot from selectable ISO of Ubuntu 10.4 live CD or Windows 7 Recovery Disk
4 GB - dedicated to Readyboost
4 GB - My 40 UK pounds Toshiba DVD player has a USB port and plays AVIs and MPEGs.*
8 GB - As above.

At this time, according to Google 10 British pounds = 15.94600 U.S. dollars

* Our next TV will probably have these features too.

I had a 128MB Lexar Jumpdrive; I got it after my first, a 256MB Sandisk Cruzer Mini. This has since failed. I ended up throwing away the 128MB because my laptop fell backwards on top of hit (it had it's USB port in the back) and pretty well snapped it in half. I was able to use it for quite some time by simply putting it back TOGETHER, but it was intermittent. I decided to try to solder it back together... That unfortunately failed since it didn't work at all, so I tossed it.

flash drive:

256MB Cruzer Mini (a newer style then the original I had, far slimmer (the old one is about the size of my thumb)). And it works, which is a big plus over the other one.

512MB Cruzer Micro (one of those sliding types); use this for transferring smaller files to and from other PCs, usually when they cannot connect to the network for whatever reason.

512MB Memorex Traveldrive.Again, for transferring files. No idea why I can't just have one for this purpose. Oh well.

2GB Kingston Datatraveler Same as above, pretty much, as far as purpose goes. looks like any other datatraveler, except it's green.

2x 8GB Kingston Datatravelers; these were being sold for $9.99 so I snapped two up. One is for storage/transfer of LARGER files (which for some reason refuse to transfer over the network) as well as holding a set of troubleshooting tools and scanner program installers so I can just pop it in to a troubled PC and hopefully figure out what's going on.

another 2 8GB SanDisk Cruzers. One has Linux Mint 9 on it, the other- hmm, I'm not sure. I think it might be empty. Although I also think I lost it, I can't seem to find it for the life of me. Oh well, they always seem to turn up. I don't buy USB flash drives anymore because they don't tell you what the read/write speeds are. I got a Sandisk 16GB and it is extremely slow on the writes, the reads are just fine. An old 2GB is twice as fast.
I now use SDHC Class 6 or 10 with a USB adapter. At least, you have some idea of the speed before you buy. The Class 6 is twice as fast on the writes as the Sandisk USB. The Class 10 is 3X the speed. The reads are all about the same.Quote from: Computer_Commando on October 11, 2010, 06:09:48 PM

Well, bully for you That´s OK if your are rich. (or fantasising). Would such a device fit in your pocket and/or plug into a TV or DVD player without an additional power supply?

I didn't need it, but I couldn't pass up a deal like that.

I have more than one 32GB flash drives. I'm still not sure why... The Sony Micro Vault Clicks are pretty cool. Sandisk makes some higher end flash drives that have better read/write speeds but I haven't found a reason to need blinding speeds for a flash drive. A 500GB portable drive costs as much as a large flash drive...

I've never had any issues with my Kingstons (both 2GB, NEW and old style). They are among my smallest but I seem to them more often than the bigger ones.

* Our next TV will probably have these features too.

It's a worthy feature IMHO. Optionally, and cheaper then a large flat screen, you can get an entertainment center with a USB post. Quote from: Salmon Trout on October 12, 2010, 02:51:53 AM

What are you talking about? The adapter is $6.00. It's a little bit wider than most flash drives.

I don't really have any recommendations except that I have a Dell RIGHT now and it WORKS good. But I would be really interested in what you expert computer gurus can suggest here. I know he didn't list 1)useage 2) budget 3)geographical but would you point us in a direction. For instance, if for general use/business use, on a budget of under $1000 if possible, and not sure about what the moderator meant for geographical??? Solve : Buy an iMac. O_O?

Answer»

If you want to easily upgrade, or if you want to save money, I would say GO for a Windows PC. Personally, I've never had much luck with Macs, but I know people who swear by them. At the end of the day, they're both PCs and both can GET the job done.Go to any Apple store or superstore that SELL Apple and play with it. That's the best way to find out if you're considering one.

Hi
I want to buy a new machine. I have always used PCs at home, work.

I am now toying with the idea, that may be I should get myself an IMAC. I guess what's holding me back is I don't know anything about Macs, never used them. As a result I am unable to evaluate the specifications .

Also, is it difficult to do upgrades to memory, hard disk extra once I buy it.

So is it better to get a PC or an iMac?
Thanks.

Solve : Firefox addon: BarTab?

Answer»

Just learned about this great new Firefox addon that I'd highly RECOMMEND to other Firefox users who're LIKE me and love dozens of tabs open, but hate how much resources it TAKES. Basically this addon will allow your tabs to be open but will KEEP the pages closed if inactive, so if you've got tabs that you are just keeping open to review later they're visible in the tab bar but the page isn't actually open until you click the tab.

This is actually GOING to be a feature that is going to be incorporated into Firefox 4, but for those who want it now, get BarTab from the below link.

Ah... I see. I thought you contradicted yourself in that post, saying first that it didn't work and then saying it did!

I mention two different programs.I know that now! But I was sick when I posted that message.I just discovered this is useful to delete a large file/folder. Windows can take a while sometimes. LockHunter did it instantly. It doesn't have to be locked. You can use it to delete any file.Interesting... lately I've used either Process Explorer's "File" view or the sysinternals "handle" program to locate the process that has a open file- although I don't need to feature often.

usually when I find a file is locked it's because I was working on my file library and had to change something and it required me to stop running it (so none of the cleanup ran).

I didn't even know Unlocker didn't work on 64-bit, actually... Downloading LockHunter now Unlocker 1.8.9 - Update March/8/2010 is x64 compatible.

- Fixed bug: Handles should not be MISSING anymore on Windows7.
- Fixed bug: Potential conflict with regular explorer use when opening multiple files or other SHELL extensions such as 7-zip.
- Fixed bug: UI should now appear properly when done from clean install.
- Fixed bug: No hangs due to looping junctions should happen anymore.
- Fixed bug: Deleting junctions will not erase original files anymore.
- Fixed bug: Managing your computer on Windows 7 will not crash anymore.
- Fixed bug: Bitmap handles should not leak anymore from the shell extension.
- Fixed bug: Many other potential sources of bugs and crashes.
- Improved BEHAVIOR: When deleting files they will be sent first to the recycle bin if possible, only if not possible more abrasive deletion will be used.
- Improved behavior: Unlocker can be started directly from the start menu to browse to the DESIRED file or folder.
- Promotional feature: Added fully optional shortcuts to eBay during the installation. Simply untick "eBay shortcuts" in the choose components page during install if you do not wish to have those. It still does not work on my Windows 7 64 bit.

Not sure what you're asking here...
Whats that MACHINE worth ? ? Or what should you spend on a new one...Its both all i want to know is whats a good price to sell the computer at and if someone can recommend a gaming laptop in which i can buy after i sold my old computer. It's a bit difficult to say, since you've only given the specifications for your motherboard.

Re: the laptop... I wouldn't know. Gaming is not something I think laptops should ever be purchased to do, since in a few years they will be regarded as barely able to handle office tasks. (much like Pentium 133 machines now)

Solve : Comodo Internet Security?

Hi guys, I found Comodo Internet Security and it says in its feature - Free to both business and home users
Source: http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/free-internet-security.php

Okay, here we go...
I have 40 clients (business partners). Each of them having their own 1 server with a production DATABASE. The OS of their server is Windows Server 2003. I advised them not to install free editions or cracks of anti-virus software in server specially for business use. All my clients are cleared with that.

They have also workstations (XP, Vista, 7) and found out that they are using free edition anti-virus software. Since this is for business use, any opinion?

They want to lessen their expenses 'cause licenses are very expensive in our country, can I suggest Comodo Internet Security for them?

How about MBAM and SAS, can they use it for business use? Can someone recommend me a decent bit of anti-virus software for business use? Open source would be nice.

Please advise.Nice software ,I would like to try in my PC !!I wouldn't have Comodo in the house little lone on my PC. to answer you question as to business software best to ask SUPPORT this question for each software or read the EOLA. Quote from: sagebrush on January 20, 2011, 06:13:08 AM

Why??When they were just a firewall, love it. When they added all the extra crap and became a security suite they trashed my system with an automatic upgrade they CLAIM couldn't HAPPEN. I know I didn't upgrade to the new suite but it was there somehow.
That and their sale of certs to malware writers don't set right with me.

Solve : Which gaming laptop is best???

Answer»

I'm new to this site but I just wanted to get some feedback as to which gaming laptop is worth spending the money on. The 3 laptops that I was looking into were 1- Alienware M17x, 2- Dell XPS 17", or 3- Ibuypower Battalion 101 17" X2700.
I am looking for the BEST of these 3 (or any better suggestions) for reliability, video/graphics, and general speed. If anyone is familiar with these laptops, I would greatly appreciate any info you can give me. Thank-you!Wait. How much $$ do you envision spending on your laptop?

Then we find the best for your budget. The Alienware is pretty good but comes with a hefty pricetag. The price range I was looking at was between $1500-2200. I've tended to go much cheaper in the past but that has just gotten me headaches with all parts that broke. I've gone through 3 cheap acer's and Hp's in less than 4 years so I'm ready to go with something more reliable...which poses another question. Are these laptops that Im looking into worth spending the money on for reliability?IMHO gaming and laptop should NEVER be used in the same sentence...

Others may have differing opinions.Quote from: patio on January 05, 2011, 03:03:41 PM

IMHO gaming and laptop should never be used in the same sentence...

Others may have differing opinions.

I agree, especially when spending that kinda cash. The thing is that I really dont use my laptop at all for gaming. It's just that in my past experiences, I have had many video/graphics problems and from what I've been researching, gaming laptops seem to be the more reliable option. If you have any other suggestions for a reliable laptop, please let me know. Newegg sells laptops. There's many customer reviews on the laptops they sell. Maybe that will help give you more info on people's experiences with various laptop brands and configurations.

Laptops can be used for gaming, yes. But you'd probably aim for a desktop if you wanted to really push the gaming performance. If you just want a good laptop that will last and gaming isn't a priority, go for a business class laptop like the Dell Latitude or Precision series. It seems that they put higher quality stuff in those laptops and in my opinion is worth the expense.
They can usually be upgraded to much better specs than consumer laptops, too. (the Dell Precision M6500 can be upgraded to 32gb of RAM, an i7 extreme, and 2 HDDs)Quote from: 2x3i5x on January 06, 2011, 01:49:30 PM

What is the best way crackup your computer?
MANY prefer Disk Cloning over over files backup.
Wikipedia has some INTEREST material about how to use Disk Cloning as a piratical and reliable backup plan.
Quote
Disk cloning is the process of copying the contents of one computer hard disk to another disk or to an "image" file. Often, the contents of the first disk are written to an image file as an intermediate step, and the second disk is loaded with the contents of the image. This procedure is also useful when moving to a larger capacity disk or to restore the disk to a previous state.

Solve : Best gaming HDD for gaming?

Answer»

Hey guy's

Can I get some recommendations on what is the best Hard DRIVE i can get for my system for about$60-$70?

here are two: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136544
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6076939&csid=ITD&body=MAIN

My current specs are on the side.

ThanksFor gaming, I would SUGGEST getting a solid state drive. They're loads faster than traditional hard drives, but still a bit pricey. You can get a 32GB ssd for the same PRICE as a 750gb hard drive. If you need the storage space, buy another cheap, USED hard drive and add it to your system.

Solve : Pandora provides good music listening online?

Answer»

I'm recommending Pandora for anyone who would like to listen to music streaming over the Internet. Pandora is personalized internet radio that is designed to help you discover new music you'll love mixed in with music you already know.

You can choose between the free account, which provides up to 40 hours of free listening per month. If the 40 hour limit is reached and more time is DESIRED, pay just 99 cents for the rest of that calendar month. The free account does involve some ads.

For unlimited ad-free listening, a paid account costing $36 per year is available. Pandora's streaming music is only available in the U.S. Smartphone and iPad users can also access Pandora's music.

Once you've created an account, you can design your own "stations"; you can configure a STATION to give you the kind of music you choose. Biographical information on musicians is also available from Pandora.
I paid for the subscription a few months ago and am glad I did. I listen to Pandora at work very frequently and was hitting the 40 hours a month earlier and earlier every month.
Plus, with the paid subscription, you can listen for five hours straight without interruption. I think the free version times out at an hour. Also, I never saw or heard any ads when I was on the free version. No clue why.

So, I recommend Pandora, too. Quote

Also, I never saw or heard any ads when I was on the free version. No clue why.

That's something they've started doing recently, the last year or so. I use it a lot less now that they have the ads.Well, I can't fault them for using ads in the free service. There has to be a revenue SOURCE somewhere to support that.

I find the ads not too ANNOYING. They tend to be short and not too frequent. In my original post, I forgot to mention artists and songs can be bookmarked in Pandora's bookmarks. To see your bookmarks, click on Your Profile, on the upper left portion of Pandora.com.

Solve : When Will We See a 3 lb High End Computer??

Dear Forum,
This is my dream. Something like an Apple MacBook Air with a quad processor. It seems to me that this is what everyone wants, and the computer manufacturers are missing it. Doesn't seem it would be that hard to do, or am I missing something?
Does anyone know if anyone is comming out with a low COST AMD Fusion based unit (the 350)?
Thanks!

New 2010 MacBook Air "netbook" gets lousy reviews

Apple fanbois may not like to hear this, but the new 2010 MacBook Air hasn't been an unqualified hit. It wasn't greeted with the slavish devotion USUALLY heaped on the new shiny from Infinite Loop. Apple launched its updated skinny laptop yesterday, but there are a surprising number of bad reviews out there. Many can't resist comparing the 11.6 inch model to a netbook -- you know, the underpowered, toy computers that Apple said it would would never make. In IT Blogwatch, bloggers clearly aren't all fanbois.

To me it's a netbook; tiny screen, flash storage only, with a hefty Apple price premium. So I'm not sure whay the OP thinks "everyone" wants? A styled netbook?

Right!
There are a lot of negatives to the Air, but I am saying doing it right, with a full blown processor and enough memory to make it a useable computer.Ok, I guess I see what you mean, but my thought is that in the market segment you seem to be pointing to, namely netbooks, price is a big factor, so is battery running time, and other things, and possibly the manufacturers do not see MUCH point in offering a product which will cost as much as a low-to-medium end laptop but have a tiny screen and no hard drive.
And that doesn't even address the heat issues that will arise when you toss a high clock quad core, heaps of RAM, and a dedicated GPU into a tiny box a little larger then the size of a DVD case, which means more fans, which means even more power draw and less battery life. Nor the fact that such a configuration would be more for high-end gaming, not casual web surfing and e-mail and so forth which is what netbooks are essentially designed for- just because the Air happens to be a mac product doesn't mean it somehow should exceed that inbuilt design consideration and become a gaming PC.

You don't need a quad core to surf. You don't need a dedicated graphics card to watch youtube videos, and you don't need gobs of RAM to do either of those things; and they all draw more power which takes away from one of the huge advantages of a netbook, which is that they usually last a lot longer on a charge then a standard laptop (given both are RELATIVELY new) my laptop lasts about two and a half to three hours; netbooks often achieve over 5 hours of ontime per charge.

It's a game of tradeoffs. If you want a "gaming machine" you either buy or build a proper desktop machine for that purpose or fool yourself into thinking that dropping several thousand dollars on a gaming laptop is worth being able to play the ABSOLUTE newest games for a few months. If you want a extremely portable, long battery life device for checking your e-mail and browsing, you get a netbook. You can't have both*.

* In the same machine. You can have a separate desktop machine for gaming and a netbook, so you can have "both" in that sense

Solve : Compare these 3 laptops, best laptop under $400??

Answer»

Which laptop is better? (listed below) It will be used for light video gaming (WoW) and light Photoshop editing, it will also be used for surfing the web and video editing.

1) HP: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/hewlett-packard-hp-15-6-laptop-featuring-intel-pentium-processor-t4500-g62-219wm-silver-english-refurbished-g62-219wm/10161909.aspx?path=23857e0c67847d2607981678b26db9d7en02

2) Toshiba: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/toshiba-toshiba-satellite-15-6-laptop-featuring-amd-processor-e350-c650d-007-black-c650d-007/10161730.aspx?path=d4860e655368a733b4acaf1d62ce6045en02&lang=en-CA&pcname=&sku=10161730&ActiveTab=Tab_specs

They both seem pretty similar, I'm wonder which is better, the one with faster CPU but less RAM or slower CPU but more RAM? So far I've asked 2 other people and one said get the HP the other said get the Toshiba.

Also, do you have any recommendations for a good laptop under $400?

I also found this Gateway laptop, seems to be better than the above 2, what do you guys think?

Thanks!I would go with the HP. In the OFFICE we bought few cheap HP laptops and they behave pretty well. Also I'm skeptic about AMD processors if it's about a laptop. Based on your primary requirements for video work i would eliminate the Toshiba and chose between the HP and the Gateway. I have never owned a gateway computer so i cannot relate to any after purchase aspects as to whether experiences have been good or bad. So if i ignore that factor for the moment it appears to me that the gateway offers your best options re the video requirements due to better video ports and more USB connection ports. Something you may wish to concider re the purchase is doing so with a credit card if the card you use has extended warranty provisions particularly on the refurbished computer as it probably is sold with a short warranty period. truenorthQuote from: truenorth on March 13, 2011, 05:15:22 PM

Well, I didn't disagree, but I suppose I could disagree if that makes it easier for you to be a jerk. I do see that this is how it was qualified, but only via implication:

Quote

Neither of those help with video editing. At all. I'm pretty sure they mean software like Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas or maybe just Windows movie Maker or Camtasia/Camstudio, not any sort of highly connectified editing like one would have done a few years ago with an Amiga (with composite inputs/outputs,effects, etc) More USB Ports are nice, but I don't think they fit in with the requirements as I understand them.

This may help future posters as well, so I'll paste in the specifications from the three here; a bit long but saves link/tab hopping to try to compare.

Overview: the HP has only 1GB of RAM. seriously, that hardly runs windows 7 by itself, let alone a video editing application- or photoshop. the fact that it's 1GB is DDR3 doesn't really help, because this just means that UPGRADING to a more usable amount of RAM for win7 is going to be more expensive. 1GB of DDR3 isn't going to be faster then 3GB (Toshiba) or 4GB(Gateway). It also posesses the only machine of the three with an Intel graphics chip, which isn't in and of itself a bad thing but with a choice a dedicated chip (one that actually does the graphics processing, instead of just passing it off to the CPU) is always a better option.

The Toshiba has what appears to be the "slowest" processor, but Ghz don't really translate across architecture barriers (Intel-> AMD). The Gateway clearly wins out in this regard I would think.

Given the same choice, I would probably get the Gateway; The only downside is the slower hard drive, but those can be replaced easier than a processor (the toshiba's 1.6Ghz gives me pause, even though it is AMD) and cheaper then the purchase of more DDR3 RAM. Also I think the Toshiba's processor might be 32-bit, but I'm not sure. The spec sheet doesn't say 64-bit explicitly like the other two so I'm not sure wether the OS is 32-bit and if that's the case wether it's because the processor is as well.

My question was more, why eliminate the toshiba based on the requirements? It's definitely better then the HP in almost every respect (aside from the lower RPM hard drive). In the case of the HP the 7200RPM will be mostly used to facilitate heavy USAGE of the pagefile, so it's hard to say wether it will offer much of an advantage, particularly running WoW, photoshop, or various video editors. USB ports and Video output don't even come into play at all near as I can tell, And It's not like USB Hubs aren't hard to come by. Personally I cannot really think of any USB devices that would need to be connected in order to facilitate the quoted use cases. Certainly the External display compatibility is irrelevant as well (but to be fair, EVERYTHING about a computer becomes smoother when you use dual displays... although that also means having another monitor.). The gateway I certainly the better of the three, but the toshiba was hardly preemptively excluded; in fact if any of them were preemptively excluded it would be the HP. 1GB on Vista/7 is simply a bad joke, regardless of wether it is DDR3. And the reason the gateway is better IMO is because it has a better Processor, more RAM, and a larger hard drive, all of which are actually relevant to the use cases that the OP has given.

What BC said makes sense to me.
YET I would prefer Toshiba. I think the ATI Radeon HD 6310is the better choice for graphics. And I don't care about 64 bit. Not yet. Of course, this is more perception that fact.Don't confuse me with facts. Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 14, 2011, 03:21:52 PM

Right . I am used to 16 bit. In fact, my early bytes were 8 bit. And I don't have many teeth left. So If I go a 64 bit system, it would likely only use 40 bits.Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 14, 2011, 05:49:39 PM

As for books, if I'm going to get a book, I'm going to get one that I KNOW is used, and generally accurate- that means something like the Llama book for Perl, or the Mouse book for Python (or the Python book for python, since I somewhat know python (enough to write a chat-script colourizer) and the "mouse" book is a beginner's guide).

There aren't really any "De Facto" standard books for anything but programming languages and a few applications, though.Tanks to Patio and BC_programmer for input.

Solve : Acribis Backup Video Ad.?

Answer»

Acribis Backup Video Ad.
This is a recommendation to watch an advertisement from Acronis, a software company.

No, not a recommendation to buy their product.
Instead, a recommendation to watch their advertisement video.

It'll only take you about three minutes of your time and it helps people be AWARE of the importance of having a backup method. It is a low key, a low pressure advertisement that portrays ordinary people who are intelligent and PRODUCTIVE but somewhat complacent when it comes to backing up information on their laptops. Would that apply to you?
Here is the video.

http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/
(Scroll down to see the video)

I think the product is very overpriced. Yet on the other hand, what value would you put on everything you've worked on for the past six months? Most likely a lot more than the $50 they're asking for the program.

My personal recommendation is not worth MUCH. I'm not in your category. I am an old retired technician /programmer that learned LONG ago to have a backup thing. I never was smart enough to get by without nit.

Recommendation:
Either have backup plan,
Chance encounter blackout ban.
It can be had for $23.99 U.S. every day via their site...so the price quoted is misleading at best...
The Free alternative that accomplishes the same thing and is easy to use would be Macrium Reflect.Windows 7 has IMAGE Backup built in.

Solve : Recommend Me a Wireless-N Router?

Answer»

So I have this slight problem. Possibly I've set my expectations too high, but in my opinion I don't think I'm asking too much. I'll try to keep this as short as possible.

My current router is a Linksys WRVS4400N v1.1. I've had it for a while, but have ALWAYS experienced problems with every firmware I've installed to it. The first problem was a T-Mobile phone that couldn't connect to it. A firmware upgrade fixed this issue, but now FTP transfers fail. Another upgrade to firmware 1.1.08 and all was well. Another upgrade to version 1.1.13 and now WPA2 doesn't work. The wireless computers couldn't hold a connection for more than 5 minutes when using WPA2 and since 802.11n standards require WPA2 with AES encryption, back to version 1.1.08 I went. All of a sudden now my download speed is being robbed. I'm suppose to be getting 15Mbps. I'm really getting about 2-5Mbps and sometimes, but not often, 10Mbps. This makes time sensitive data, such as streaming Netflix, very frustrating. Ping times average around 150-200ms... I'm tired of this POS router.

So off I go on my search for a new router. Reading reviews on Newegg and Cnet. I found the DIR-655 by D-Link, but after reading many bad reviews about the wireless restarting randomly, it was to the poo poo list with that one. I swear against Netgear due to the many many problems I've seen with them and our clients. (I work as an IT tech.) So all Netgears I just skipped over. Linksys I looked at as well, but I'm kinda avoiding them too.

TP-Link routers kinda caught my eye. Especially since the one I was looking at supported DD-WRT. Which I've been wanting to experiment with. The one I'm looking at is the TL-WR1043ND. The current firmware doesn't support remote access via HTTPS and apparently doesn't support daylight savings time from what I've heard. Two small issues which I think I may be able to ignore/work around. Such as setting the remote management port to 443, if that'll work, and configuring the router to obtain time through an NTP server. I could also install DD-WRT, but after reading their list of supported devices, it says that the 802.11n will run at the speeds of the 802.11g, but everything else works... Which is kind of like saying that your getting this great sports car with no tires if you ask me.

So I started looking at another TP-Link model WR941ND. This had no complaints between DD-WRT and 802.11n, but unfortunately it's only supported up to version 2.0 and their current version is 4.0.

So this is the problem. Apparently no one makes a router that just works. Only routers which either have no advanced features for any price what so ever, or features that they "say" they have, but when you get them, don't work. I'm hoping you guys can prove me wrong and recommend me a non-junk router that actually does what it's suppose to do.

The key features I'm looking for is.

  • 802.11n
  • Gigabit ports
  • UPnP
  • DHCP Reservation
Quote
Possibly I've set my expectations too high
Yes.
Contrary to popular wishing, 802.11 anything is stuck in the mud. The original spec never was for speeds above 10 M bps, but it was pushed to 54 M bps to improve the market. It is NOT scalable. Current regulations hem it in for power and spectrum use.

It will not get better until the FCC, or the equivalent agency, really opens up the SHF spectrum to super broadband networking. Right now, you have to use private licensed network to get the bandwidth you want. And with heavy restrictions.

Yeah, they are talking about it. But the fact is the current offerings are overpriced and under perform. And it is not scalable.

With proper regulation, or de-regulation, everybody could have a 2 gigabit broad band into every home, office or school that wants it.

But not yet. Not a t a price you can afford.
The 802.11 n and whatever-is-next is a dead-end.

Why 2.4 GHz is a dead end for Wi-Fi

I have the DIR-655, and I haven't had any problems with anything whatsoever. It isn't supported by DD-WRT, though. Although I don't see the point (aside from tinkering) myself, since my router does everything I need, services several wireless devices and computers without problems, all with WPA2 TKIP and AES encryption, and the gigabit LAN ports work well, as long as one uses a CAT5e or CAT6 cable (as opposed to a normal CAT5 cable).

Being that I've only used this router and some average Linksys WRT54G router I don't really have a lot to compare with. Some of my friends who administer servers swear by the DIR-615 and DIR-815; mostly because those two are supported by DD-WRT.

Well, to be fair, most of the "problems" are more or less problems of DD-WRT; it's not the router supporting DD-WRT, it's whether DD-WRT supports the router.

As I noted, I'm using a DIR-655, which isn't supported by the DD-WRT firmware. However, it is doing, without any problems, everything in your small list except for uPnP, which I don't use and cannot comment on. If DD-WRT is important, I've heard good things about the DIR-615 and DIR-815; aside from that I cannot really provide any anecdotal information about any other brands or specific models.Thank you both for your replies.

Contrary to popular wishing, 802.11 anything is stuck in the mud. The original spec never was for speeds above 10 M bps, but it was pushed to 54 M bps to improve the market. It is NOT scalable. Current regulations hem it in for power and spectrum use
I've never had an issue with the speeds of wireless being that LOW. I'm currently running 72Mbps locally off my wireless-n card and Linksys WRVS4400N regardless of my placement within the home. Which I know isn't great when you HEAR about other routers pushing 300Mbps, but it's much faster than 10Mbps I can say that. The speed issues I'm facing currently are experienced on a wired and wireless connection. Connecting directly to the modem from a PC works perfectly. When I mentioned my expectations being too high, I was really referring to finding a router that actually works, period. Not one that says it supports WPA2 and when you use WPA2, you have to reboot your router every 5 minutes. As well as various other problems both related and unrelated to Wi-Fi.

It will not get better until the FCC, or the equivalent agency, really opens up the SHF spectrum to super broadband networking. Right now, you have to use private licensed network to get the bandwidth you want. And with heavy restrictions.
So the good old US government bones us in the rear end again. When have they ever done anything to help the people in any way? But that's a whole other topic for a whole other forum.

Why 2.4 GHz is a dead end for Wi-Fi
(The above is a ZDnet article from last year. Not much has changed yet.)
That was an interesting read. I did know that microwaves produced interference within a wireless network, but from that article, it seems that the most interference from them can be avoided using channel 1. Which is something I didn't know. However, I can deal with the three minutes of a bogged down network while me or my neighbor nukes a can of Spaghettios.

The DIR-655 has a 4/5 rating on Newegg out of 1,663 ratings. Which is good, but I'm not necessarily what you would call the luckiest person in the world. I just moved into my first home at the end of last year. Within the first two months, my stove caught on fire, my pipes froze, the propane company held me responsible for the debt of the previous tenants, my roof was leaking, light fixtures were falling off the ceiling, several problems with the furnace, and the thermostat going up in smoke. That's all off the top of my head, and as you can see, if anyone is going to get a defective device, it's going to be me. I was having high hopes for the DIR-655, but after reading review after review of the wireless problem, I turned it down. It would be one thing if it was only one or two people, but I must have read about six or seven reviews claiming the same thing. Here are some quoted reviews from Newegg.

Wireless signal routinely drops for variable amounts of time several times per day.

This product was great till I upgraded the firmware. Horrible speeds at random times of the day using wireless connection. I thought it was my ISP fault till I plugged in through LAN. Just pinging the router through wireless would get me latency times over 1000ms and frequent packet loss. I've notice it occur when streaming media or playing Online games. This thing is garbage now since I cannot reverse Firmware update. Avoid this product
Quote
Pros: It does (occasionally) transmit signals wirelessly.

Cons: I bought it so that my wife could have wireless connection to her lap top.

Because of this purchase, I now live in fear that my wife will kill me in my sleep.

Reliability: There are many topics regarding the Wireless network restarting. My problem isn't the wireless restarting. It's that when the wireless restarts, it disconnections ALL my connections.

DIR-655 System Log: Wireless restart
DIR-655 System Log: All Wireless shut down
DIR-655 System Log: DISCONNECT all stations
DIR-655 System Log: Wireless restart
DIR-655 System Log: Wireless link is down
DIR-655 System Log: Wireless schedule init
DIR-655 System Log: Wireless link is up
DIR-655 System Log: Device initialized
DIR-655 System Log: LAN Ethernet Carrier Detected
DIR-655 System Log: LAN interface is up
DIR-655 System Log: WAN interface cable has been connected
DIR-655 System Log: Bringing up WAN using Static IP Address

This happens frequently and as I work from home, I need to invest in a more stable product. It's ok for casual use but it does annoy.

I agree, but the main reason I was considering DD-WRT was because of problems I've read with the factory firmware. Which I say is a problem with the router. DD-WRT was more of a second chance option for me. Say if the router doesn't work, instead of buying another one, I'll just try with DD-WRT.

I also failed to mention another router I've dealt with. The Trendnet TEW-691GR. This is the router I currently have installed in my parents home and when I was living there, worked great and seeing as they haven't called me, it must still be working great. I just checked it's current uptime, which is 17 days. It probably would've been longer, but a power outage most likely brought it down.

The only thing that bugs me about this router is the fact that with my wireless-n card, my speeds to the Internet were very slow. Even though the local wireless speed was pushing more than 100Mbps. After troubleshooting the problem, I narrowed it down to a driver issue for my wireless card. If I turn off wireless-n mode on my card, the speeds are great. The Linux driver for my card, however, works great with N mode enabled. This is really the only thing, besides the no support for HTTPS remote management, that is keeping me from purchasing this router, but with the terrible reviews and problems with every other router, I'm now considering just dealing with it. I really don't need the Wireless-N speeds currently. If I do, I can always boot to Linux or call Trendnet support and see how good they are.

Thanks again for your replies.

This is PRETTY cool and I would encourage everyone to check it out. Be sure to create an account at VirusTotal so you can submit unknown apps to the scanner and make everyones DEVICE using the VirusTotal app safer.

VirusTotal for Android checks the APPLICATIONS installed in your Android phone against VirusTotal (http://www.virustotal.com).

Solve : Introduction to Watchdog Timers?

Answer»

This is my recommended reading for IT newbies and others interested in unattended remote computer systems. This COULD even apply apply to a personal user who has to be away from home for a long time but needs his desktop on line 24 hours and 7 days. Quote

For those embedded systems that can't be constantly watched by a human, watchdog timers MAY be the solution.
Most embedded systems need to be self-reliant. It's not usually possible to wait for someone to reboot them if the software hangs. Some embedded designs, such as space probes, are simply not accessible to human OPERATORS. If their software ever hangs, such systems are permanently disabled. In other cases, the speed with which a human operator might reset the system would be too slow to meet the uptime requirements of the product.

Solve : Clipboard Manager (for Windows Vista and Windows 7)?

Answer»

I only installed this 5 days ago but I'm going to go ahead and POST a recommendation for it. It's a clipboard manager that installs as a gadget on the SIDEBAR in Windows VISTA and Windows 7. I'm using it with Windows 7 and I like it very much.

For those of you who MAY never have used a clipboard utility that provides enhanced clipboard functionality beyond the standard Windows clipboard, the main advantage of a clipboard manager is that it holds many copy actions in memory, not just the most recent. With Clipboard Manager, you can set the amount of hard drive space to be used for storing clipboard items. You can clear all items stored with a two clicks or you can selectively delete items from the clipboard. You can search retained clipboard history via a filter/search BOX on the gadget.

Solve : I just became aware of this device today and think it may prove usefull?

Don't know how long this type of device has been around. However a serious user of external HDD's it occurs to me that this could be a very nice manner of expanding the utilization and versatility of external HDD"s. I see some great advantages to this piece of hardware. You would NOT be required to have a separate case for each HDD. It seems compatible to both laptop and PC (Apple as well) internal drives. This unit is only for SATA drives and connects externally VIA a 2.0 USB port. The flyer that includes this device arrived today from Tiger Direct and i decided to pass it along for the possible benefit of CH members, truenorth

With the drive being in the open by using the Hard Drive Dock in your link, any heat problem is basically eliminated. And then, it also provides the convenience of being able to quickly swap drives in it. 30 Bucks ? ?...i'll take one...I NORMALLY avoid anything branded "Thermaltake" like the plague, but these are actually pretty good. For $30, it's a no-brainer if you even think you may use it one day, it saves so much hassle. For some reason I can't open Tiger Direct today. What is everybody looking at?

oh, cool. Is there anything special about the termaltake one, or would the $20 Rosewill one from newegg be just as good?Since both ThermalTake and Rosewill both sell PSU's i'd go out on a limb and say neither manufactures this device...

That's true. This is intended to be in between a normal USB/Firewire external HDD and an internal drive in terms of portability - it's something you probably wouldn't use every day, but to plug in a drive for weekly backups, etc it's very handy.
Saying that, we have several we use at work to do preliminary tests on hard drives, these have been in use for a few years and are still going strong, so they do seem fairly robust. besides ... it's not like they're $100 or something.

Solve : I plan to buy a new laptop, please recommend one?

Answer»

Hi all friends,

My laptop has been used for a LONG time, it is very old. So I want to buy a new one, but don't know which one I should buy. COULD you please recommend one to me? Or What's brand of the alptop you own. Thanks a lot. This area is not really for asking for recommendations.
But. since you ask, I went and got a refurbished Dell laptop awhile back. It is not a nice and fast as some new laptops, but it is still very functional and everything I need works. The Bluetooth does not work. But I don't use the Bluetooth. Had to replace the HARD drive. Otherwise, it is a low-maintenance laptop. It is an Inspiron E1705, which is now very dated. Won't win any contests. It just works.

If I had the money, I would buy an Apple Laptop and just forget Windows. But new Apples can do Windows it you want.
This was from last year.
Top 7 Ultrathin Windows LaptopsAsus has beautiful laptops at great prices such as the bamboo series or for more powerful computers, the G series. As far as Apple is CONCERNED, their computers are over priced, and over hyped. However, OS x snow leopard is beautiful and easy to use. You could see into making a dual boot hackintosh with snow leopard and windows 7 I suppose.

The three I mention all work.

The are not as clean as windows explorer, it you have changed fonts and size these alternative viewers have a LITTLE trouble with adjusting the fonts, icons and spacing. It notice that right off because of my vision problem.

My favorite is Free Commander. It gives you a two pane view and you can be looking at folders in one area and contents of a specific folder over on a different drive. Neat when you want to do a manual update for two drives with specific files only.

The one called explorer++ seems to be a 'portable' files viewer. You can put it on a USB stick and do not have to install it. Seems to work good enough for a helper, but not a real replacement.

Cubic Explorer would be the best choice for a replacement if you are having trouble with Windows Explorer. It has more options so that it is operatically your 'My Computer' and 'Control Panel' in one. But I have not used it enough yer to prefer it over by first choice. I have shortcuts to all three on my desktop and it is full to try things with them.
So far, none of these has DONE any damage.

For me, the big advantage is you can have two disparate programs viewing your file structure and each none can have settings that suit your needs for the moment.

Of course, you don't have to have these programs, but they are a reel help when you find the built-in Windows Explorer is awkward for your preferences. You fan drag and drop between the n all. And each one may have a different visual presentation.

I like having more choices.
