Solve : Nintendo DSi? |
Answer» Just today (after my confirmation) I recieved $250 and a DSI. Right now I am slowly making this thread via the DSi's keyboard on it's web browser (powered by Opera [available for 0 points]). The use of the web browser is fun but it takes time to get used to (including no flash or java [possible upside because there are less ads]). A major downside is the 700 something by 800 something resolution (so get used to scrolling where you want to see). I'm not sure if there any DSi-only games, but if there are any, can anyone list some good ones (available from a store in Canada)? See here: http://kotaku.com/5184277/nintendo-plans-nintendo-dsi-enhanced-game-cards-with-dsi+only-features The thing about DSI is the camera and wondering if there's gonna be games that employ the camera such that if you were to ACTUALLY touch the screen with a PENCIL, the game WOULD actually recognize it's a pencil via having seen it in the camera lens.Quote from: 2x3i5x on June 07, 2009, 06:31:11 PM See here: http://kotaku.com/5184277/nintendo-plans-nintendo-dsi-enhanced-game-cards-with-dsi+only-features Well Waario Ware gets fairly close, it recognizes biting, faces abd hands... |

Solve : 12 Bonehead Misconceptions of Computer Science Professors? |
Answer» Hey guys, have you seen this site: 12 Bonehead Misconceptions of Computer Science Professors? Interesting! Check it out and review their comments.I'm starting out by learning VB6. The result of getting a few grades he was unhappy with... ANYWAY, I have to agree, the article was just a rant. It's mislabelled. the author says "professors" plural, and yet generalizes them all based on his experience with a handful. Anyway, Patio, for some reason you've made me want to refute every single one, heh Quote 1. Java is a good first TEACHING language This is curious. The whole entry is supposed to be about Computer Science professors on the whole, and yet, when you look at the first sentence explaining this: Quote I don’t know how many computer science programs start teaching programming using JavaYou don't? So how in the heck is this a misconception that applies to Computer Science professors as a whole, rather then the "misconception" of a single professor? First- Java is no better and no worse then any other programming language for teaching. They are all programming languages. He continues: Quote but there are more than a few, and that’s too many. When you’re going over variables, loops and conditionals, the object-oriented overhead of a language like java is unnecessary and confusing. Inquisitive students can’t just memorize things (i.e. public static void main (String args[])) without demanding to know what it means and why it’s there. "I don't even know how to respond using words small enough he would understand, so I'll be blunt- this is bull-shakespeare. The fact is, when you actually start programming, you're going to have to deal with code that is both unrelated to what your doing at the moment as well as possibly messy, so developing the ability to analyze what is relevant to your task NOW rather then later is useful. Secondly, basing the selection of a teaching language on the syntactic requirements of the language is stupid. He's basically saying "they should use BASIC instead". lastly, this "misconception" is misconcieved. Good computer science courses don't select a single language at all. They usually explain concepts using scheme, and then apply what they learned to a more powerful/standard language- such as C++,C#, or java, since teaching programming using a single language is stupid. This looks one of those zealots that has this big hard-on for Python and thinks it will solve all the worlds problems as soon as everybody tries to learn it. They also have a big problem with anything that is compiled, which I imagine brings him to his second point: Quote 2. Machine language is “basic”In this particular section, we see that the author does not possess a basic understanding of metaphor. Quote Comp Sci people seem to be terribly confused about what ‘basic’ means. When one learns to drive a car, starting the car, making a right turn, a left turn, parking, etc. is basic. Building a parallel gas-electric hybrid engine is not basic. He is right here, however he fails to mention that machine language, and the assembly that is used to generate it, describes actions exactly that way; as a series of logical steps. It takes more steps and work on the part of the programmer to create the equivalent of higher level constructs, but it is by no means difficult. It is the fact that it's so basic that makes it harder to use. Quote Driving a car is more basic than building one because the latter requires significantly more expert knowledge than the former. In the same way, using a simple scripting language requires less depth of understanding that writing in machine language; therefore, computer science education should start with higher level languages and proceed to lower level ones, not vice versa. His mention that "using a simple scripting language" implies that he believes script languages to be superior to Assembly; however he fails to mention the benefits of using Assembly over a scripting language, such as the ability to hand-tune performance IMPROVEMENTS, and even to make script code faster in some instances when you understand how the interpreter operates on it. Additionally, understanding assembly language increases once ability to solve computer problems as a whole- debugging issues with computers is a lot easier when you understand registers, return addresses, and stack frames, all three of which are completely hidden from you in a "sophisticated" scripting language. The authors love of scripting languages means that he likes to open notepad, and simply write code without thinking about design. This probably introduces his next point: Quote 3. You should write code on paper before you write it on a computer You should. He rambles on, however... Quote Writing code by hand is stupid. It is entirely inconsistent with the interactive and iterative design process that comes naturally to hackers and painters alike.HAHAHAHA No, of course not. writing code out by hand doesn't possibly make it easier to design a application. Of course, it helps if your application does s omething useful and/or is large enough. His statements to the contrary merely prove he s pends his time with page-long script files doing basic useless tasks. Quote Professional software developers make extensive use of API documentation, reference guides, forum discussions, etc. to make troubleshoot problems and make their code more efficient and effective. This is wrong. Amateur software developers do that. professional software developers do this thing called "debugging". You don't need any reference material to see that your trying to access past the end of the string. Additionally, writing out code on paper can help concrete the idea in your head- and possibly reveal problems. of course you can do that as you type it out, but as you re-hash the problem in your mind your constantly thinking of possible flaws in your solution, rather then coming up with a solution, typing it out, and debugging for 2 hours only to discover that you were doing something horribly wrong. Quote Writing code by hand tests your ability to write trivially simple software without making errors. Real programmers must be capable of making complex software and detecting their errors with a variety of automated tools.Again- no. Real programmers must be capable of not making errors in the first place and writing the code out by hand first facilitates this. And when there is an error, there will be fewer of them, and having the algorithm in question solidified in ones brain by writing out the code (the action of writing by hand actually stimulates the memory more then typing it out does, believe it or not, since, rather then a mindless jumble of nonsense that goes straight from the brain to the fingertips, as typing does, one needs to invoke their cerebellum and muscle memory going back to early grade school for printing out letters and symbols. it is this "primitive" memory recall that helps "open up" long term memory. It makes one think about each line of code, each operation, separately, because you are writing it out separately; it helps detect errors in logic. (syntax errors can be caught later, if they exist). Quote Teaching or testing coding using pencil and paper is inconsistent with both the natural mode of human action and the practical realities of software development.Just because program code is executed on the computer doesn't make the computer the best way to learn how to write it. Kind of like how implying he has any sort of practical experience with software development does not make this author know what he's talking about. Quote 4. Lectures are an effective method of teaching programmingLectures in programming classes are no more or less effective a teaching tool then in other classes. For example, English courses have lectures about various grammatical scenarios- these are applied later when you write essays. Math classes explain various rules regarding mathematical operations and functions in lectures. these are applied later as well. Just as how Computer Science can have concepts explained via lectures and have that material used later when actually writing some code down. The main point here is the lecture is pointless if you cannot review it later, by either taking notes or even making an audio recording. It's the all-important memory concept known as "repetition" which may be why I consider this particular author here a complete douchebag, since he insists on repeatedly proving it. Quote 5. Algorithm design is learned by reading existing algorithmsUm. they do. Quote Designing algorithms is about finding innovative solutions to difficult problems.Yes. very good. here, have a gold sticker. Quote Algorithm design courses are about studying existing solutions to rather simple problems. And Math Proofs are about studying previous math proofs. What's your point? Quote Learning how a particular problem can be solves provides approximately zero insight into how to solve problems you’ve never encountered before.Ah, I see. this makes perfect sense. See, an algorithm design course is supposed to find Computer science problems that have no solution and set the students to trying to solve it! Makes perfect sense! OH WAIT! NO IT DOES NOT! lastly, it DOES provide insight, since many of the general algorithmic designs can be dedicated to a vast number of problems- the "divide and conquer" strategy is used for the QuickSort Algorithm, the Binary Search Algorithm, as well as in the creation of optimized palettes via the Octree method, and far more. one can deduce therefore that there is a chance that problems not yet encountered have solutions that can involve a divide and conquer strategy. Additionally, one can learn that every recursive definition has an iterative equivalent. Quote 6. You can just ‘pick up’ prolog in a WEEK for a courseYou should, if you have any experience with programming at all. Quote There’s this crazy belief among Comp Sci. faculty that all languages are basically the same,They are, you dumbass. Quote so after learning the principles behind languages you can use whatever.pretty much. Quote This is *censored*. Is not. Quote This is like claiming that since someone studied Spannish grammar in grade school, they can speak Spanish fluently, in any of Spanish, Mexican or Columbian accents. No it isn't. It's more like writing a 12 point essay about misconceptions and riddling them with your own ineptitude and then claiming they actually have more truth in them then Bill Clinton has celibacy. Quote The leap between structured and object-oriented programming is huge,Only if you have short legs. And it isn't. an Object is just a structure in memory. C is not object oriented but you can work with objects in the form of structures. Quote and it pales in comparison to the leap between object-oriented languages and declarative languages. much as when you read your test scores you paled. At least this is all I can GATHER, from your repeated spewings. Quote 7. Exams measure understanding of programmingNo, and I doubt the teachers claim this. but they are a required part of the course. so Get over it. Quote 8. GUI’s are not an important aspect of learning to codeThey aren't. I'm not even going to bother to quote and refute the actual body of this point, because it's as blunt as the author himself. Quote 9. Programming Requires CalculusRequires, no. helps, yes. This once again proves that this particular programmer (the author) hasn't actually done as much software development as his claims would seem to suggest. Quote 10. Linux will rapidly overtake Windows among consumersThis I have to agree with. but at the same time it has absolutely nothing to do with software development or computer science courses, so I'm apt to consider that perhaps the author has ran out of relevant points. Quote 11. LaTeX will overtake WYSIWYG text editors because LaTeX gives you more controlI love how the author refutes this claim, but earlier on pretty much implied that script languages will overtake compiled languages because they are more "basic" Which at the time also implies that he hasn't written a interpreter before. They are not basic. Quote 12. You can buy gates at RadioShackAnd with this, the author once again proves that he is really just complaining about the teacher he had, and not about CS teachers in general.Another instant classic... Well Done BC.That was a good one, BC! Quote Real programmers must be capable of not making errors in the first place and writing the code out by hand first facilitates this. Think about Toyota! Who made that blunder? A hacker that does not have time for making notes?Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 01, 2010, 05:48:28 PM That was a good one, BC! Exactly! I've found, that even when I "know" exactly how I'm going to design something, if I actually write down the various interfaces and design it on paper, it always turns out better. When I write stuff "by FEEL" I usually end up with code that's no longer used, variable declarations all over the place, and a generally "messy" feel to everything. That and it's usually full of hacks. Basically, I get the same result when I modify someone elses code- the main thing is I really have no idea what is going on with the code but am somehow able to pretend otherwise. Also, Time can be saved by doing that little bit of extra work- my first version of my Expression evaluator that I used for a now lost "colour picker" program took nearly a year to get the way I had it at that point and was basically a bunch of features messily tacked onto a functionparser that I found online. When I lost all of that and ended up having the rewrite a new one from scratch, I decided NOT to just jump into writing it, but instead plan out how it was going to work- what objects will there be? How will they interact? It took me an hour to design everything, and then another 9 hours to implement it- the new version is actually written by me fully, and it was ten times more capable then the older version. Same story with most of my older projects- I had a clear vision so to speak when I started them, but as I worked on them that vision became fuzzy, and now they are abandoned messes with major bugs that can only be fixed with a complete redesign. So I suppose in a way I had to learn the hard way how important a good design was right from the start. That was sort of Visual Basic 2.0's fault, it has a more "do first, ask questions later" type feel to it. |

I think that's asking for trouble. I've never used more than a few add-ons and, even at that, I found a problem with one, a skin named Walnut. I liked its appearance but I discovered that having it installed caused sluggishness in viewing and navigating bookmarks. When I uninstalled Walnut, the problem stopped. Solve : Vista and Windows 7? |
Answer» Quote My fresh windows 7 install consumed a massive 1.2GB out of 4GBThen get another 4 gigs. Quote from: Kurtiskain on January 12, 2010, 04:36:02 AM My fresh windows 7 install consumed a massive 1.2GB out of 4GB (3.5GB usable) of ram just at login, with average cpu usage at 30% idleSomething must be out of kilter here. I believe that's definitely not normal. It's not what I've experienced with Windows 7.Comparing Vista/Win7 vs. XP in memory usage is apples and oranges as they utilise RAM totally different... Have a Read... As a side note i've removed Window Blinds from many machines and seen immediate improvement...customers noticed as well...Quote from: soybean on January 12, 2010, 08:26:57 AM Something must be out of kilter here. I believe that's definitely not normal. It's not what I've experienced with Windows 7. Actually, it is. It's called Superfetch. See, Vista/7 don't leave unused RAM... well, unused. It's no good. why have 8GB of RAM when you only use that last memory stick when you load up 15 copies of AutoCAD? Waste of money. So Unused memory is used to Cache data- anything else requests RAM, and if there isn't any available, Superfetch yields some of it's cache RAM. Quote Mine works fine if I am only playing music and surfing the net...Its games where it falls down. OpenAL games are fine, it is the DirectSound3D games like Fallout 3 where I get let down. What's the point of having a high range vid card, a nice PCI-e Audio card and high range 5.1 speakers if you can't use them properly?2.1. Directsound works fine for me; and I did have access to a few extra sets of speakers to test out, couldn't find any problems; only had them for a day or so, though. games are able to detect and use EAX 5.0 just fine. That being said, MY X-Fi actually has a X-Fi chip (extremeGamer) ; the X-Fi extreme Audio does not, it's purely software emulation. This might also explain why you have higher processor usage. (in fact, what you have is no better hardware-wise then an Audigy SE, which also didn't have the audigy chip) I believe MS made a few changes starting with vista with regards to host-based processing within drivers; which might explain the higher CPU consumption. Quote My fresh windows 7 install consumed a massive 1.2GB out of 4GB (3.5GB usable) of ram just at login, with average cpu usage at 30% idle actually, you probably had far more usable. right now I have 26 megabytes "free" of 8 GB. but really, the 6288K of cached RAM (as shown in task manager) is also "free" RAM in that if a application requests it SuperFetch will give it up. And I could rant for hours about WindowBlinds and StarDock. While the AeroGlass solutions for XP look alright, they don't make the desktop composited, and rather leverage the SetLayeredWindowAttributes() API to make a knock off by making the transclucent. It doesn't blur it, however, which is pretty important, and either way, it doesn't make the desktop DX enabled. It uses 400MB of RAM. as I speak my dwm.exe is using 28MB. Anyone else remember when they said Windows XP was a memory hog? Back then the maximum memory you could affordably get was maybe 1gb..... Now, when you can easily put 16gb in a desktop computer, what the big deal with W7 taking up 1gb? Give it a few more years and we'll be used to 1.5gb usage and then Windows 21 (kernel 8.2) will come out, using 8gb of ram, and everyone will be longing again for the Windows 7 days.Quote from: michaewlewis on January 12, 2010, 02:48:10 PM Anyone else remember when they said Windows XP was a memory hog? Windows 3.1 could run with 1MB of RAM. windows 95 is RIDICULOUS and BLOATED because it at least 4MB!Quote Windows 3.1 could run with 1MB of RAM. windows 95 is RIDICULOUS and BLOATED because it <requires> at least 4MB! So true...and not that long ago either. and have you installed Office 4.3? like, what kind of program needs 90 megabytes of disk space? Microsoft is AWFUL and MAKES BLOATWARE ALL the time! I mean, really, why else would the fdisk on DOS 6 be bigger then the one that came with DOS 3, huh? Why!? "Because it adds support for INT13H drive access and adds support for drives larger then 40MB?" Nonsense! Nonsense! It's because it's a conspiracy to take up more space! they are in league with hard drive vendors! I prefer not to go with Microsoft's bloatware, I instead prefer to have 400MB of RAM consumed by a third party, stardock application with known stability issues, and subsequently I will blame all crashes that are most certainly caused by it on MS too, just because. I mean, really, there is no reason for kernel32.dll to be larger in windows vista then it is in windows 95, I mean, they could easily add the thousands of features they have added to it in the meantime without making the file larger! It's actually a interesting pattern. When MS makes something bigger, no matter then amount, it doesn't appear to matter how much better it is, it's still bloat. This is a most curious scenario stemming from confusion over what exactly "bloat" is. I mean, would you call a feature you use every single day "bloat"? Would you prefer, instead, to use some esoteric drawn out method to perform the exact same thing? I mean, sure, it takes longer, but it's streamlined because there is no bloat-y menu option. It's curious how PEOPLE are quick to exclaim how bloated something is (almost 100% of the time it's a MS product), and yet cannot, after questioning, really define what bloat is nor what part of the product is bloat, it's just a baseless claim based on observations by half-wits who enjoy looking at wave files in notepad seeking evidence of wrongdoing by third party's to microsoft, and somehow coming to the glorious conclusion that MS is also using this "pirated" software. It's geniuses like that, which lack any sort of understanding about even how coffee is brewed in the software industry somehow standing on a soapbox making claims as if they actually understood the difference between a apartment threaded and a free-threaded COM component that annoy me. And people actually believe these people, which I find even more unbelievable. It's like the people saying that "windows is full of bugs" and then when asked for a single example quote a bug in something like lotus notes or something equally stupid. Quote from: kpac on January 12, 2010, 04:57:56 AM Then get another 4 gigs. My boards max is 4GB and I'm running 32-bit Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 12, 2010, 01:04:42 PM Actually, it is. It's called Superfetch. It is true that the X-Fi Extreme Audio card is not a true X-Fi card, though I got it for $45 NZD, and the X-Fi Titanium was selling for $150 NZD, it does what I want it to do anyhow. EAX or Driectsound3D do not work under Vista/Windows 7...even creative says so: http://apcmag.com/creative_puts_eax_back_into_vista.htm it is to do with the way the driver stack was re-written, and that the way Direct Sound no longer supports it, and to get the 3D positioning and EAX effects in games and applications you need ALchemy to convert the Driect Sound commands into OpenAL so that the card can process them. I tried ALchemy and found this to be true, Fallout 3, with it turned off, I have no clue where a voice is coming from, be it left or right, behind or forward. ALchemy turned on, I can tell where they are just by the audio positioning, i can tell if a person is to my right, left or behind me. EAX reverb and environment effects came back too.....but the game simply crashes in places with a high amount of 'voices'. And okay, so I admit I was wrong with the RAM and Window Blinds, I found that the indexing service was to blame for the CPU usage though What about using the patched Uxtheme.dll? it is still using the original XP theme engine, while giving nice shiny black or dark red themes I used a patched uxtheme myself; used the Royal Noir theme.... or maybe it wasn't patched and the theme was signed.... I don't really remember. I've patched it before, though. EAX works for me in crysis, Quake 2:Evolved, ioQuake3, and gzdoom (although I don't know what tech gzdoom uses, it just has a "3d sound" option. I know that quake 2:evolved uses OpenAL for sound, as well, since without it it doesn't have any, heh. I was going to say half-life 2 worked with 3d sound, but it doesn't appear to have that as an option. I find the ARTICLE interesting; since it was only relatively recently that the audio stack was even put into kernel mode, for speed reasons. Quote But it was completely rewritten, so drivers that took advantage of features in the older audio stack, such as Direct Sound's 3D hardware acceleration, Nothing has changed. Windows 2000 dsound.dll: (I was going to use XP but... meh. Quote Microsoft (R) COFF/PE Dumper Version 9.00.21022.08 Windows Vista C:\windows\system32\dsound.dll: Quote Microsoft (R) COFF/PE Dumper Version 9.00.21022.08 what's critical here is the DllCanUnloadNow and DllGetClassObject; this marks these two dlls as COM components. COM components are always user-mode. My point? DirectSound3d has been in user mode all along; meanwhile, with w2k and XP, the Kernel MIXER is what was in the kernel. What interfaces with the kernel-mode mixer? the drivers. Basically, the article is wrong about it. They say that it goes Application->Kernel mixer->Direct Sound->Driver. but what is actually happening is it goes Application->DirectSound API->Driver->Kernel Mixer In fact, this is essentially part of the directsound API; also, Directsound3d includes emulation of 3d sound hardware where none is available. Guess what DirectSound asks to see if it's available? The driver. Because that is the next layer down. If the manufacturer is to lazy to create a proper driver, they might you know, simply return that it doesn't have that capability. Of additional note, only of the kernel-mode sound architecture was moved to User-mode; the main goal of which was to make it so that failed sound driver installs or simply crappy buggy drivers won't cause a Blue screen error, and so you can switch Sound drivers without a reboot. Additionally, switching some of the low-level stuff to user-mode meant that a lot of the requests made by applications could be services without switching to kernel mode; simple stuff like asking for the capabilities of the hardware and so forth no longer require a JUMP to Ring 0 code. Also, I might point out that the previous mixers use 16-bit Integer arithmetic; the new architecture uses 32-bit floating point, which improves accuracy and fidelity across the board. It's a bit unfortunate, but as a result Vista's audio stack is not hardware accelerated. Of course, neither is Windows XP's by default, but when you add hardware like an Audigy 2 or X-Fi sound card (that has a DSP) and the requisite drivers, you basically hardware-accelerate Windows XP's audio. Vista doesn't really work this way, and though the software audio is dramatically improved, you can't just accelerate it by adding a sound card with hardware acceleration. Truthfully, this is primarily a concern of games, which we hope won't be affected much. The only company making mass-market audio cards with hardware acceleration is Creative, and they're doing a good job of promoting OpenAL as the audio standard for games. OpenAL drivers under Vista should allow for hardware acceleration of 3D audio every bit as good as the latest DirectX + EAX. This is the important point; when you were using XP, your 3d sound was never hardware accelerated to begin with; it's always been a emulation. So, now you get crashes in certain 3d-sound modes. This is curious; and most notably does not involve any windows architecture change at all- your 3d-sound is still emulated by the creative drivers; it passes the "emulation" to the mixer and that get's output. since that passed stream is flat (no 3d calculation, no voices, etc) then it's logical to assume that your crashes are occuring because of creative's sloppy work with the emulation. if it's any consolation; the driver works fine for any number of voices if it doesn't have to fall-back on emulation and has the actual hardware to work with. As a closing remark, it's curious how the article you linked was posted 4 days before windows vista was released. |

Solve : What's wrong with Vista?? |
Answer» ME was totally screwed up attempt to make Win 98 better, like it was something wrong with 98....It's not any one thing in particular that gave Vista a bad rep. It's a combination of things creating domino effects... Its original code base, which got scrapped and rewritten with Server 2003 Windows Vista's codebase was never scrapped and rewritten. some portions of the kernel were, but that was far less then 20%. (IF it was a totally rewritten codebase, I wonder why they rewrote the exact same WMF rendering bug that's been there since win95?) Quote Considering that Windows 7 can run on a netbook and Vista struggles in that department, it seems that there wasn't much in the way of code optimization in Vista. Perhaps the 11th hour rush post-code scrap had something to do with that? Perhaps Microsoft thought that people would throw hardware at the problem instead of sticking with XP? Actually, the main reason Post RTM Vista and windows 7 run better on netbooks are simply better default options and better detection of low-end hardware to enable those options. Netmeeting was probably removed because so many viruses/malware take advantage of the default service configuration on XP to use it; also, most people, well, never use it. Quote from: Broni on December 30, 2009, 02:31:52 PM ME was totally screwed up attempt to make Win 98 better, like it was something wrong with 98....I can only attribute ME with MS Bob and blame both on that bad MS innovation, it was similar to 'casual Friday'. I think they called it 'drunken Monday'...MS has a long history of fixing things, which were not broken, removing features, which most people will miss and adding features, which nobody wants.well, consider it this way: when they were developing earlier versions of Excel (<5) they figured everybody used excel for "what if" tests; like, "What if I made this much less a month" or "what if my dog needed more expensive special food" and see how it would reflect on the budget. Turns out, people were simply STORING LISTS in Excel, and not really performing what if tests at all; the Excel team, armed with this knowledge, (after performing some real world usability tests, outside the lab) added the Fill-Down and Fill Left commands, and sort and other features that help manage lists. It was simply a case of expecting people to use it for what it was designed for. Heck, even today people keep things in Excel that really should go in a database. It's kind of like the Clock; a lot of the time, people would use it as a CALENDAR, to see, for example, what day the 24 falls on or whatever. What people didn't realize, is changing ANYTHING in the dialog from double-clicking the clock in the tasbar resulting in a change of the system time. This caused problems sometimes for things like alarms and alerts. MS discovered that people were doing it "the wrong way" and made it the "right way" by making it show a clock that would serve as a calendar that would not change the system time/date. The only thing i miss lately is hardware profiles...a handy feature.Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 29, 2009, 08:45:15 AM I was a naysayer myself until I tried it, too. At least I knew that many of my conceptions were preconceived. Then...when did XP start being considered as a good OS. I never heard half as much about the problems with XP than those of Vista. Besides, if vista is the fantastic, user-friendly OS that microsoft has made it out to be, why release windows 7 so soon after it? However, I think I was about 9 or 10 the first time I used a pc with XP so I can't say I know half as much about how windows xp was viewed upon released than some of the computer guru's here.Quote why release windows 7 so soon after it?Says who? toucheHuh?Quote from: Broni on January 25, 2010, 09:42:57 AM Huh?http://www.thefreedictionary.com/toucheHuh? I'd rather go to http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds and get the Slim version, which is not bundled with the toolbar. Solve : DriveSpacio? |
Answer» http://www.drivespacio.f-sw.com/download.html How many times have you run out of space on your C: drive and wondered… where did all my free space go? Drives tab in DriveSpacio will show you a GRAPHICAL view of all drives on your computer, with all sorts of great charts and graphs. DriveSpacio integrates into Windows Explorer so you are able to right click on a drive and analyze it. You can also launch the application and open a specific drive, or even just a specific sub-folder if you want. I find this to be helpful because I can choose to only look in my user folder. The INTERFACE has an explorer type feel and you can go through each folder and directory to get statistics, and the graph on the right-hand pane will change based on where in the tree you are. More INFO, and screenshots: http://blogs.howtogeek.com/mysticgeek/2008/09/10/reclaim-your-hard-drive-space-the-easy-way/Nice.....Very Nice INDEED.......Started to use it myself.Quote from: Broni on September 12, 2008, 05:51:28 PM Started to use it myself. One says, "I've lost my electron." "Are you sure?" "I'm positive." I kill myself. Quote from: Aegis on September 13, 2008, 10:24:30 PM Two hydrogen atoms walk into a bar. Solve : RoboForm? |
Answer» RoboForm is a secure password manager that can automatically log you into your web accounts with a single click. Argh, it uninstalled all my themes and addons for Firefox 2. That was VERY Ruuuuude!! What? Do you mean me saying that, or what RoboForm did was rude? Quote or what RoboForm did was rude? Exactly.I quit recommending this program long time ago as they used to have hidden toolbars install etc. I'd personally steer clear of it. Firefox will do all it does anyways and in conjunction with MozBack you can backup all your Profile and password data anyways...Evil, you seem suspicious about something.... It's early. Give me a few hours and my sarcasm skills will be better....Okay then.... Personally, I wouldn't try it. I just said it was interesting. Please see Here when POSTING a Review...Been using Roboform for over 2 years. Still get new updates (paid version) & you can disable or configure the toolbars to you liking. |

Solve : Wink? |
Answer» http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,27122-order,1-page,1/description.html?tk=nl_ddxdwn Those who need to create tutorials for how to use software now have an easy way to create them--with Wink. This program makes it quite easy to CAPTURE screenshots and mouse movements, then ADD explanatory boxes, buttons, and titles, and package it together as a presentation in a variety of formats, including Flash, PDF, Postscript, a STANDALONE .exe file, and more. Capturing screens is literally as easy as pressing a button on your keyboard, and adding explanations and annotations is nearly as simple. You can also easily record and add an audio narration. And you can easily preview and edit presentations. Given that Wink is free and so simple to use, anyone who creates tutorials would find it worthwhile to give it a try. I remember hearing somewhere that Saviour USED this or something, don't remember. Anyways, looks interesting...Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on September 13, 2008, 01:41:41 AM I remember hearing somewhere that Saviour used this or something, don't remember. Similar spelling? Solve : Defraggler - from the makers of CCleaner and Recuva? |
Answer» I use this PROGRAM all the time. I have had no problems with it at all. I wonder if Piriform will ever release anything else besides this, CCleaner, & Recuva. Who cares? Once they continue the development of these two excellent programs... A lot of companies keep releasing new software and forget to update the old ones, which are usually the best. Quote from: kpac on September 15, 2008, 02:28:43 PM Quote from: lordvader781 on September 15, 2008, 09:09:00 AMI wonder if Piriform will ever release anything else besides this, CCleaner, & Recuva. Piriform isn't like Microsoft or any other massive software company. They only have three programs whereas Microsoft has too many to even count. I don't think it would hurt them to add a few more.Just so not only kudos are posted, Vista users may want to read these: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=17307 http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=16464 There are also some reports about it being SLOW. I can't SAY anything about, because I STARTED it before I went to bed. |

Solve : Chromifox? |
Answer» Look what I found! Chromifox, from the developer of Camifox, is another blatant rip-off of another default theme from another great open source web browser! This time, the target is Google Chrome, or more specifically Chromium, the open source project behind it.I new they were gonna make this theme Im using it now.In my opinion, best theme besides MacFox Graphite IIQuote Argh, FF3It's time....ask Carbon for details Tada! http://www.teamhackaday.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2843Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on SEPTEMBER 13, 2008, 11:36:43 AM Tada! YAY!!!!!! Good Luck!Geez Carbon, Pink Floyid took that game so seriously, that one which we won, I guess the only option was him winning himself, CAUSE when you n me JOINED forces and were winning, he deleted the old game n made a new one....which has no Ivy team in it. HAHA funny, and he even blocked my pm Interesting... Two questions though. 1) Why did you post it here? 2) Why is it locked? I posted in here cause I saw you here and I don't know why it is locked now, anyway lets forget about that. How can I update to FF3?You gotta download it. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/Oh thanks Old man!! |

Solve : RightMark CPU Clock Utility? |
Answer» HERE Works nice.... Quote RightMark CPU Clock Utility descriptionI'll try that, thanx! Does it work better than for example "clockgen" and is it EASY to use? I don't know, if it's better, but it's simple, and it doesn't require installation.Been using it for quite a while now. It's not without it's issues, but it is a useful tool.Quote It's not without it's issuesCan you tell more?On certain CPUs and with some operating systems, speeds and voltages are sometimes not detected or adjusted properly. Example: on my family's PC, with Athlon 64 3500+ and XP X64, the speed was not adjusted until I added the /pmtimer switch to boot.ini. Without that, RMClock couldn't do a thing. When I resume from standby on my laptop, the speed is shown as higher than it is (I can't recall the exact number as it's been a while, I don't use standby often, but it's the same all over, i.e. the slowest speed is shown, for example, .5GHz higher and so is the highest). It's best to see if anyone else has used it successfully with your specific CPU if it's new before expecting it to work. Having said that, there aren't many completely issue-free programs out there, so don't let it put you off - it's worth a shot if you want to lower the HEAT output of your PC and/or save battery power. Thanks I dont get anything about this software how do i set new clock speeds?? ThanxQuote from: FilluX on March 09, 2008, 06:53:51 AM I dont get anything about this software how do i set new clock speeds?? Uh-Oh.....RMClock is generally used to slow your CPU down in order to generate less heat . . . it can't be used to overclock (if that's what you want to do) unless your multiplier is unlocked (yours isn't). |

Solve : AutoBackup? |
Answer» HERE Something that most technicians are familiar with is the WHOLE backup process before a computer format. Backup the My Documents folder, favorites, address books, the desktop and find your WAY to the Outlook Express email storage which is hidden under many subfolders etc.. It would be great if there was a program that could do all this for you. Well, there is. AutoBackup is a small, portable application that allows you to pick and choose what you (or your client) want to back up with simple check BOXES. The program does the rest. After the format, you can also use AutoBackup to restore all the files back to where they should be. For a list of what AutoBackup supports backing up and restoring, read on. The application supports backing up and restoring the following files: * Shared Documents * My Documents Folder * Windows Desktop * IE Favorites * IE Cookies * Outlook Express messages and settings * Outlook Express Address Book * Outlook PST file * Windows Activation File * Office Activation Files * OPERA Bookmarks and Settings * Firefox Bookmarks and Settings * Thunderbird Profiles * Lotus Notes DATA * Dialup Settings (rasphone.pbk) * Windows Fonts * TCP/IP Parametres Also runs as a Bart's PE plugin ! ! Nice Find.See? Sometimes, I post something what is NOT gonna mess up your Vista setup.....LOLBe careful not to throw your elbow out patting yourself on the back...Being knighted, I have enough armor to protect my elbow...hehehe |

Solve : Vista4Experts? |
Answer» http://www.ntcore.com/vista4experts.php Quote Vista4Experts is kind of a treat for computer experts who don't want security center notifications, User Account Control dialogs, automatic Windows Defender scannings, automatic update installations (which cause you to reboot your system if you don't react quickly enough). People who want MSDN (or google) set as DEFAULT search engine in the Internet Explorer search bar, who want the start menu power button to shut down the system instead of hibernating it, etc. These and many more fixes are included in Vista4Experts. All of these changes can be discarded, enabled or reversed. Vista4Experts is the first expert utility of its kind and works on every platform. Quote I realize, of course, that many fixes in Vista4Experts lower Windows Vista's default security, but that's the difference between users who feel enough confident to decide what's best for their system and users who don't. Many of Windows Vista's security features are extremely annoying to many developers and other IT experts. You're seriously out to get me now...aren't you ? ? <-----patio insideI like the utility idea. It's UNFORTUNATE though that most users have to resort to a third-party utility such as this to do this. Microsoft really should just allow users to disable / enable what they want giving plenty of warnings about the potential dangers. |
