Solve : Enso Words - Universal Spell Check?

Answer» http://www.humanized.com/enso/words/

Quote
Spell check is a necessary feature of whichever program you use for writing text, yet it has never been available everywhere ... until now. Enso Words gives you spell-check power for all of your favorite programs, from Microsoft Word and Mozilla Firefox to Macromedia FIREWORKS. It's so simple and elegant, that it FEELS like magic.
By some estimates, the English language includes almost one million words. With the simple command "define," Enso Words gives you the definitions or synonyms of any word you can see in any application, from your text EDITOR to your favorite browser.
Typically, finding out how many words or characters you've written is an arduous process. Not so with Enso Words: Just use the "word count" or "character count" commands to get the information you need. You won't have to type more than three keys, and, better yet, won't have to memorize arcane shortcuts. That's the power of Enso.

Solve : Add A Second Clock To The System Tray In Vista?

Answer» HERE

If you are familiar with Windows operating system, you will know that a clock resides within the System Tray. The time that the clock displays is determined by your time zone. Vista lets you add multiple CLOCKS to the System Tray in case you need to know the time in more than one time zone. For example, if you are traveling, you may want to keep track of the LOCAL time and the time back at home. Vista lets you monitor the time in two additional time zones.

To add a second clock to the System Tray to keep track of additional time zones:

1. Double click the clock within the System Tray.
2. Click Date and Time SETTINGS.
3. Select the Additional Clocks tab.
4. Click SHOW this clock and use the drop down arrow to select the proper time zone.
5. Click OK.

You can view the time for the additional time zone you selected by clicking the time in the System Tray.

Solve : Desktop Sidebar?

Answer» HERE

Enhance XP with a Vista-like sidebar that INCLUDES: calendars, calculators, and more.

Here's something else that Windows XP USERS may be jealous about when it comes to Vista: the nifty sidebar that displays a variety of applets that can grab information from the Internet, or show other information, such as a clock, or pictures from your PC. Well, XP users need not suffer sidebar envy any longer -- they have this program. It looks and WORKS much like Windows Vista's sidebar, and comes with many pre-installed applets, including a weather watcher, clock, performance monitor, news grabber, media player, quick launch pad, and plenty more.

In addition to the applets that COME with the program, there are many more you can download from the developer's site. In addition, you can download different skins to change the way it LOOK. Desktop Sidebar works with Windows Vista, as well as with XP, although there's no real reason to use it instead of Vista's built-in sidebar. Still, it's nice to have the option if you want it. After all, the program is free, so it may even be worth a try for Vista users.

Solve : Crystal XP - Vista only?

Answer» HERE

Quote
Gain greater control over window transparency in Windows Vista.

Microsoft makes a big deal about Windows Vista's Aero interface, which includes transparent windows, but the truth is, that transparency is less than OVERWHELMING. For starters, only windows borders are transparent. In addition, not all windows have transparent windows. And you can't easily control BORDER transparency.

Crystal XP changes all that. It lets you make entire windows transparent, not just borders. And you can easily change the level of transparency as well. In addition, you can change transparency on an application-by-application basis, something you can't normally do in Vista. The program has another nice EXTRA as well --- it will display your CPU USE, in percentage.

Note that the program only works in Windows Vista. And the program is still in beta, so if that makes you uncomfortable, don't download.

You're determined to bugger my Vista install...aren't you ? ?

I have to test those things on someone's machine, don't I?...HEHEHE

Solve : Windows Vista Recovery Disc Download?

Answer» HERE

If you're like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you're like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers. Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don't give you a real Windows Vista installation disc with your purchase. Instead, they bundle what they call a "recovery disc" (that's if you're lucky - otherwise you'll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that.

It doesn't matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license - your computer manufacturer just don't want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.

The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one PURPOSE. It's not just a way to get Windows installed, it's also the only way of recovering a borked installation. The Windows Vista DVD has a "recovery center" that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery CONSOLE for advanced recovery purposes.

MICROSOFT seems to have realized this problem, and have thankfully made a recovery disc for this purpose. It contains the contents of the Windows Vista DVD's "recovery center," as we've come to refer to it. It cannot be used to install or reinstall Windows Vista, and just serves as a Windows PE interface to recovering your PC. Technically, one could re-create this installation media with freely-downloadable media from Microsoft (namely the Microsoft WAIK kit, a multi-gigabyte download); but it's *censored*-decent of Microsoft to make this available to Windows' users who might not be capable of creating such a thing on their own.

NeoSmart Technologies is hosting a copy of the Windows Vista Recovery Disc for your convenience. It is a 120 MiB download, and in the standard ISO format.

Solve : strip down bloated vista?

Answer» http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=205920302
Quote
A free software tool that promises to strip down the Windows Vista operating system -- which even some Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) officials have called "bloated" -- to a MINIMALIST state is attracting big interest on the Internet.

vLite, created by DEVELOPER Dino Nuhagic, automatically removes a number of non-essential Windows Vista components in order to pare the OS's heavy footprint by half or more.

vLite allows users to preselect numerous Vista features for automatic removal prior to installing the OS on their personal computers. Among them: Windows MEDIA Player, Windows Photo Viewer, MSN Installer, Wallpapers, SlideShow, Windows Mail and other utilities.

Solve : VirusTotal Uploader?

Answer» HERE

Easily scan suspicious files for viruses with this uploading tool and its related free service.

Sometimes you need to check out a file before dare to open it. For those occasions, VirusTotal.com's free online service is invaluable. VirusTotal.com scans files with dozens of SECURITY programs to check for viruses and other malware. The VirusTotal Uploader adds a one-click mechanism to Windows's context menu to MAKE this process even easier.

VirusTotal.com uses a boggling number--32 at last count--of programs to check for viruses. There are no guarantees, of course, but if your file gets a clean bill of health from Avast, AVG, Kaspersky, McAfee, Panda, and Sophos (to name a few), you may not feel the need to seek out opinion number 33.

Scans on VirusTotal.com are pretty FAST--especially considering how many scanners are firing at once--but queue INFO and status bars let you know how things are going. VirusTotal Uploader speeds things up further, inserting an OPTION into the Windows context menu. Right-click a file, select "Send To," and choose "VirusTotal" from the send-to options. Then just sit back and wait for the diagnosis, the second opinion...and on through the thirty-second opinion.

Solve : New Product Review Auslogics Defrag?

Answer» DLoad Link

Downloaded a new (to me) defragmentation utility and took it around the block...

Systems tested on:
Win2K
Windows XP
Vista (32 bit only)

NOTE: Each corresponding partition tested was an average size of 50G

I'll have to say i was impressed for a freebie.
Very responsive , neat clean interface with no bells and whistles, no nag screens asking for purchase.

Win2K times: up to 35% faster than Windows defrag and about 30% faster than Diskeeper Lite ( which has been my tool of choice)
XP times: Same as above.
Vista times: Approximately 50% faster.

So intrigued by the speed i tested a bit further.
Normally if i run DisKeeper Lite to completion and immediately run it again it finishes pretty RAPIDLY...with most of the time being used up reading the FAT contents.
So after Auslogics finished way ahead of time i immediately ran Diskeeper Lite to see if the results were the same.
Unfortunately DisKeeper still ACTED like it had work to do and ran a bit longer than a 2nd run after DKLite's test runs back to back.I don't at this time know the full reason but i suspect it skips the swapfile which is not all that critical. It may just have a more EFFICIENT engine for doing it's job.

Conclusion: For anyone who is complacent about running their utilities on a regular basis this is for you. If a tool can get the job done faster and means you may use it more often to keep things running smoothly then grab it now.

Did i mention it's FREE ? ?

Solve : CodeStuff's Starter?

Answer»

Available from CodeStuff's website:

Quote

Starter v5.6.2.8

Starter is YET another startup manager for MICROSOFT Windows

As a primary purpose, Starter allows one to view and manage all the programs that are starting automatically whenever operating system is loading. It enumerates all the hidden registry entries, startup folders' items and some of the initialization files, so that the user COULD choose to temporarily disable selected entries, edit them, create new, or delete them permanently.

Secondary purpose is to list all the running processes with possibility to view extended process' information (such as used DLLs, memory usage, thread COUNT, priorities etc.), and to terminate selected process (even a Windows NT service, having enough access rights).

Another one is Windows' services (and drivers) manager with some advanced features.

Starter is a real Freeware and is not crippled in any way among the similar products. The user interface is pretty simple and has a lot of options that are self-explanatory.

There was a nice REVIEW of this program in the local paper this week. Thought I'd share it with you all.Nice find. It could use a few more features, but it's pretty handy as-is. Thanks for the info.

Solve : Task Killer?

Answer» http://www.rsdsoft.com/task_killer/

Free!
Win95, 98, Me, NT, 2000, XP

This PROCESS manager allows you to quickly terminate applications, processes, windows, to start/stop Windows services and etc. ie. you may "kill" a frozen (hanged up) application, process or service by clicking on the windows TASKBAR's Task Killer icon and choosing application (process) from the menu list. You will forget clumsy key combination Ctrl-Alt-Del and STANDARD Task Manager window forever!
Features overview:

* Very fast and neat way to unload ("kill") freezed ("hanged") applications (tasks), processes or services. SHOWS tasks, windows and(or) services in popup menu.
* "Smart Kill" mode - is more safe mode to kill program than standard windows Task Manager.
* Applications memory usage control.
* Flexible settings.
* Global hotkeys.
* User firendly interface.
* Very low process usage and memory usage.
* Freeware!

If you search for easy-to-use application memory tracker and process manager don't fail to try Task Killer. There are no windows (only settings window to setup Task Killer LOOK, hotkeys etc.) - just popup menu where you will see applications, processes, windows names and services (alphabetically sorted) and their memory usage. Red colored items are hanged ("freezed") applications. You may unload them from memory by one click. Green colored menu items are system applications and services (think twice before unloading those processes)

Solve : Volumouse?

Answer» HERE

Volumouse provides a quick and easy way to control the sound volume on your system — simply by rolling the wheel of your wheel mouse. It ALLOWS you to define a set of rules for DETERMINING when the wheel will be used for changing the sound volume.
There are much more options.
I just installed it, and it works nicely.I have been using Volumouse for a few months now and it works well for me.
I have it set up for changing my volume and window transparency.

If you want a custom step size, you can TYPE in any number you want instead of SELECTING one from the drop-down menu.
For EXAMPLE, I typed in 100 for my volume step size because I wanted a finer adjustment the 500.

Solve : Free FLV Converter?

Answer» http://www.download.com/Free-FLV-Converter/3000-2194_4-10744177.html?tag=nl.e415

Quote
This free software will let you search youTube and dailyMotion videos without opening your browser and you can even watch the videos using the built-in video player. Free FLV Converter allows you to easily grab and save desired video. This software can convert the videos to Avi (xvid), Ipod, iphone and psp format (MPEG4 and H.264). This software can also convert all your videos (divx, xvid, mpeg, dvd, avi) to FLV video (Flash video) with an automatic HTML page creation. You will only have to place the files on your website to SHARE your videos with the entire world. Version 1.2.1 fixes some bugs.

Quote
Lightweight and effective, this program is a GREAT way to convert video files from Flash formats into something USEFUL beyond Web pages. Specializing in formats meant for portable devices, Free FLV Converter also supports AVI and can download embedded SWF or FLV vids directly from the Internet when you punch in the URL.

The app can also perform local searches for vids as well as convert to FLV. Hitting either conversion tab will automatically open a file browser so you can choose your victim. From there, a conversion window opens up, and you can change the basics such as settings, including output format, quality, and destination directory, as well as more advanced options like the codec, aspect ratio, and the frame rate. Tap convert at the bottom of the window when you're ready, and the Free FLV Converter works smoothly and without interfering with other programs.

Free FLV Converter does have one annoyance: When you install it, be sure to opt out of the Dealio toolbar. It's no more than a minor drawback, though, and doesn't cause problems later on. Seeing as how the app ran smoothly in the background, it's DEFINITELY a must-use piece of freeware.

Solve : PC Tools firewall bad experience - warning?

Answer»

I'm on Vista.
For last several days, at a startup, I've been getting annoying Windows warning:
An unauthorized change has been made to windows
After that, I wasn't able to open Control Panel, get Windows updates, etc.
Validating Windows at Micro$oft site, fails.
I tried System Restore, which to make me more confused, helped for a day, or so, but next time, I start Windows, message is back.
It was driving me nuts.
Search for solution, pointed me to some Vista incompatible program.
The thing was, I really didn't install anything recently, and if even so, System Restore should have helped.
In SAID period of time, all I installed were some Windows updates, so again, System Restore should have helped.
Nothing, no solution.
Finally, I found some POST about PC TOOLS Spyware Doctor, which comes as optional install with PC Tools firewall, may be incompatible.
But, I didn't install Spyware Doctor.
Finally, I've decided to unistall PC Tools firewall (which I've been using WITHOUT a problem for last 3 months), and voila!, problem goes away, Windows validates, no more warning pop-ups.
What happened, I'm not exactly sure. Either some Windows update, all of sudden decided, that PC Tools firewall is non-compatible with Vista (formally, it IS), or PC Tools firewall ran some kind of update (which I didn't notice), and made itself non-compatible.

This is just as a warning to anyone, who could experience similar problem.
All is good now, here. I installed Comodo.

Solve : GoneIn60s?

Answer» HERE

GoneIn60s recovers closed applications within one minute of closing them. Perfect for when you accidentally close one program when you meant to close another one.
GoneIn60s is a neat little program that makes those Homer Simpsonesque "D'oh!" moments where you close Firefox instead of iTunes a thing of the past. Weighing in at a hefty 206KB, Gone keeps closed programs running in your RAM for an additional 60 seconds after you hit that red X.

Once running, Gone lives in your Taskbar as a yellow lightning bolt. After you close a program, right-clicking on the icon will give you a list of recently closed programs that you can reopen, without any information being lost. Double-clicking on the icon will rescue all recently closed programs.

The program has a lot going for it. You can actually customize the TIME period, and we were ABLE to fend off losing apps for 200 seconds. Gone has a customizable blacklist of programs that you don't want it to save when you close them--it comes preloaded with Notepad.exe--and it has a "KILL windows" option that prevents it from saving changed documents. When I exited Gone, it reopened the last closed program--a strange bug, but not one that interferes with the program's effectiveness.

Lightweight, effective, and loaded with some useful features, GoneIn60s will help you keep your cool under the pressure of accidental red X clicks. That's pretty nifty. Thanks for the link.I might actually have to TRY this one out. I close things on accident all the time.

Solve : New defrag tool?

Answer» http://ultradefrag.sourceforge.net/

UltraDefrag is powerful Open Source defragmentation tool for Windows NT. It is very FAST, because the defragmenting is done by kernel-mode driver. They are three interfaces to them: graphical, console and native. The GUI is very useful, because it represents your filesystem visually as a color coded cluster map. The console is another option for those that prefer the COMMAND line. It is also allows you to run UltraDefrag from the task scheduler and scripts. Finally, the native executable will run at boot time in a manner similar to chkdsk.

The design of UltraDefrag is very simple. There are no skins, localization, or animations. It is a SMALL and powerful program!

It can be USED on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003,Windows Vista and all of the 64-bit editions of Windows. Grabbed it AWHILE ago...does a good thorough job and ain't real pretty...just how i like all my Utilities !Currently:

Solve : CSVed?

Answer» http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,68632-order,1-page,1/description.html?tk=nl_ddxdwn

View, edit, sort, export, and convert CSV files with this powerful utility.

CSV (Comma Separated Value) files are among the most common means of transferring data between otherwise incompatible systems. They are human-readable and nearly every program which deals with rows of data can parse them. However, they can be a nightmare to edit and view manually, especially if they are large. CSVED, a "cardware" program, is an extraordinary tool to view, edit, and manipulate these files. It has become part of my standard utility toolbox and I anticipate it using it daily in the future, since MANY files I work with as a database programmer come to me in this format.

The interface is easy to use, but not uncluttered. The top half of the screen shows your data; the bottom half has tabs. A LOT of tabs. If there is something a reasonable user might wish to do with a CSV file that this program doesn't have an option for, somewhere, I will be surprised. Delete a column, sort by a column, edit a single record or set a value for a whole column, even swap the negative sign from the front of a number to the back--the feature set is incredibly rich.

The program is also capable of changing the separator from a comma to a tab, pipe, or a user-selected symbol, as well as many other manipulations. It can also export to XML, and this was the only feature I found which was "quirky". The XML file it output seemed well-formed when I opened in a text editor, but it could not be read by Microsoft's XML viewer due to an invalid (blank) encoding type. Removing the ' encoding="" ' TAG in the XML file header fixed this problem and the file then opened perfectly.

I tested the program with SEVERAL CSV files I use in my database work, and it opened even the largest (15 megabytes) quickly and smoothly. If you work with CSV files at all, I strongly recommend this program.

Solve : Free Utility Backs Up Frequently Changed Files?

Answer» http://www.mogware.com/FileHamster/

Most users have learned to regularly save documents while they are CREATING them. While this prevents you from losing your work, it has the disadvantage that each time you save you write over the previous version and so can't go back to an early revision. You can get AROUND this by using different file names each time you save but an easier way is to USE the free FileHampster program that automatically time stamps and stores copies each time you save. Furthermore, it allows you to annotate each copy so that your revision versions are fully documented. There are some nice plug-ins too, including one that allows you to use a third PARTY DIF program such as WinMerge to view the differences between versions.

Solve : Stickies?

Answer» http://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/stickies/

What is Stickies?

Stickies is a PC utility I WROTE to try to cut down on the number of Post-It® notes I was leaving stuck to my monitor. It is a computerised version of those notes.

The design goal behind Stickies is that the program is small and simple. Stickies will not mess with your system files, or write to the registry. Stickies stores all information in a single text-based ini file.

Stickies will never support animated dancing figures, or PLAY "Greensleeves". They are instead yellow rectangular windows onto which you can put some text notes. Once created, they will stay on screen until you take them away. Just like a real sticky piece of paper.

Main features:

* Once on screen, stickies will remain where placed until closed, even through reboots
* Stickies appearance can be customised; fonts, colours and buttons MAY be changed, and styles saved. Stickies can be resized.
* Stickies can snap to each other and to the sides of the screen to keep them neatly lined up
* Stickies can be attached to a web site, document or folder so they only show when it's on screen
* Stickies can be transferred from one machine to another either over a TCP/IP network connection, or by using an SMTP mail server or MAPI client:
o Hierarchical friends list, which may be automatically transferred from other friends
o Play a sound file on receive
o Signature for transmitted or emailed stickies
o Favourite friends, and custom lists can be made
* Stickies can be hidden for a certain period, until a specified date and time, or to wake every day, WEEK or month, to act as reminders.
* Stickies can have alarms set to ensure you notice them at a point you choose
* Stickies can be transferred to and from your Palm or PPC PDA.
* International language support
* Stickies works with Windows Vista
* Stickies is small and simple, it writes to a single text file, and does not alter the registry
* AD network administrators can use Group Policy to control settings
* ...and Stickies is completely FREE!

Solve : Firefox Environment Backup Extension?

Answer»

I just used it, and it works very nicely. It's Firefox add-on, not like standalone Mozbackup, and it doesn't support Thunderbird, but regarding Firefox, it has much more options, including scheduled backup. You don't even have to close Firefox, like with Mozbackup.

Backup or move all of your Firefox settings with this invaluable little utility!

These days, many of us have built a small world into our browser--a world of bookmarks, visited links, stored passwords, and form DATA. LOSING that can be CATASTROPHIC, and moving it can be nightmarish. The Firefox Environment Backup Extension, or FEBE, promises to eliminate that nightmare.

FEBE is trivial to install, and, once in place, needs only a save directory specified before it can do its work. Incredibly rich in options for such a seemingly simple program, it allows the user to do everything from setting scheduled backups to creating custom backup configurations.

The program works, it is nonintrusive, and it performs a very useful function with very little hassle. Anyone who uses Firefox for anything but the most casual of browsing would do well with this program.

Note: This link takes you to the vendor's site, where you can automatically install the file into your browser.

Requires javascript to be on to DLoad...

I'll pass for now.Get it from the official addon site instead if you're worried about turning on Javascript.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2109

Its companion extension CLEO is brilliant as well.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2942
It allows you to to pack several extensions into one xpi. So when someone wants all or some of your extensions you can just give them one file ready for installation. Well, one main thing I like about it, I don't have to remember to run Mozbackup, once in a while. Now, I have a backup DAILY.

Solve : DriverMax?

Answer» http://www.innovative-sol.com/drivermax/index.htm

Note: DriverMax only works on Windows Vista, Windows XP and Windows 2003 (all service packs).

DriverMax is a new program which allows you to easily reinstall all your Windows drivers. No more searching for rare drivers on discs or on the web or inserting one installation CD after the other. Simply export all your current drivers (or just the ones that work ok) to a folder or a compressed file. After reinstalling Windows you will have everything in one place!

Most of the situations when Windows is running slower are caused by faulty driver installations. Windows stores all versions of OLDER drivers just in case you want to go back; sometimes it messes up older versions with more recent ones. The Export Wizard will only export the drivers you select by copying the NEEDED files to a folder or a compressed ZIP file.

After reinstalling Windows all drivers will be back in place in less than 5 MINUTES - sparing you of searching, inserting disc after disk and losing precious time. The Import Drivers wizard allows you to install all the drivers that you exported earlier. The entire operation might take up to 5-10 minutes.

Just one single computer RESTART will be required after all drivers are reinstalled!

DriverMax is able to display a complete report of all drivers (versions, release dates) installed on your system. This feature can also be very useful when you want to analyze the differences between the drivers installed on different machines.

After installing, and opening this program, click on "Claim your free registration code".al right i'll check it outanother AWESOME research!Way to go BroniVery nice Broni!Thank You Broni....

Solve : Alternatives to Acronis...?

Answer»

I keep seeing users refer other members to Acronis...

While this may be a good alternative for drive IMAGING...has anyone considered the FREE alternatives?

Acronis isn't free...and it's better for drive imaging as opposed to simply formatting and partitioning.

If you're looking for free drive imaging software there's always...

Drive IMAGE XML and HD Clone Free EditionSnapfiles says so it must be pretty good.
Anyone care to try it Love the rolling eyes...

I have tried both...my personal favorite...and one I'd highly recommend: HD Clone Free Edition.

BTW...no adware/spyware...guaranteed.I also prefer HDClone to Drive Image....

And BTW i'm the one who keeps recommending Acronis ! !

Guilty as charged.

But seriously for 30 Bucks shipped and with all the additional Features not found in an open source product i still think it's a SOUND recommendation.

patio.LMAO...

I thought it was you...

Just wanted others to know there are FREE alternatives.

No harm...no foul.I got Norton Ghost free the last time I bought an HDD.Acronis Features Page...
More than one page.
I still say for 30 Bucks shipped it's the best out there.

I like and use Free alternatives to every App there is...but not when it comes to my data.Quote from: patio on August 25, 2008, 07:31:29 PM

I like and use Free alternatives to every App there is...but not when it comes to my data.

Why's that? Do you think "free" programs that OFFER the same thing don't live up to Acroinis' standards?

I can understand your statement if you're used to the program...and can swear by it. However, the way I look at it...if a free program can do the same thing...why spend the money?

That's like telling someone who's paying for Norton Internet Security...not to try other free malware protection.

Don't get me wrong...I'm not trying to start an argument here. I just wanted to know why you'd not be willing to use freeware when it came to your data.Visit the link and find a freeware app that can do what it does including incremental backups; backups to FTP; backups by set directories; scheduling etc.....

Trust me...it ain't out there.

Did i mention 64Bit as well ? ?Then some people are more just comfortable knowing they have live support which doesn't come with the free software, on top of the extra features Patio mentioned. 30 bucks isn't much for peace of mind.I agree...

Granted, HD Clone can't do what Acronis can, however, there are alternative versions available, as well...at a cost to the CONSUMER:

http://www.miray.de/products/sat.hdclone.html#versions

I'm not knocking the Acronis program...it does have more bells and whistles and is a proven piece of software.

My original post was only to inform those who are looking for alternative "free" drive imaging software.

I've used HD Clone...and it does what I want it to do...at no cost to me. Should I decide I need a better package...I, too, would probably prefer Acronis, as well. And i wasn't knocking the Free choices you posted...i've used them both.

After all i did admit initially to being the "Acronis Preacher" ....no ? ?

Why yes, you did...and I just want you to know that it wan't just you doing the preaching, either.

And again...no harm...no foul.

All the best, patio...

Solve : e-cards from http://www.jacquielawson.com/?

Answer»

With the Christmas holiday approaching, I thought I would post this. Shortly before Thanksgiving, I decided to subscribe to online cards from http://www.jacquielawson.com/ for 1 year. The cost for 1 year is $12, $18 for 2 years. I come from a large family (siblings, nephews, nieces, cousins, etc.) and thought I might use this as a substitute for regular cards. I'm thinking of it as "green" initiative, a way to reduce paper use while also saving some money. I realize this may not appeal to everyone; some or many of you will prefer the traditional card.

http://www.jacquielawson.com/ had 137 cards, as of the date I subscribed; they are classified into various categories. The artwork is simply delightful.

Here are some of the features of the service:

  • Can select a deferred date for sending a card
  • Email notification/confirmation that a card was sent
  • Email notification that a card was viewed by the recipient
  • History of sent cards and cards viewed cards can be seen by logging on to the website
  • Cards pending (to be sent at a future date)
  • Sending an initial card to a new recipient adds the email address to an online address book (convenient for future cards to that person)
  • When sending a card, a text box is displayed where you can enter a personal message
  • Cards can be previewed
  • Screensavers ( I haven't tried any of them, but they use the same delightful artwork as the cards)

How can they be certain that the recipient got AND opened the email? The same way viruses can be activated when you open the email? The response to the member indicating a recipient has viewed the card is based on viewing the web page constituting the card, not the email message. The email notification sent to a card recipient is a simple text message with a link to the card. Quote from: Helpmeh on December 07, 2009, 07:58:36 PM
How can they be certain that the recipient got AND opened the email? The same way viruses can be activated when you open the email?
Most email clients have the option to notify you when the recipient has READ the email anyway.Personally I find e-cards impersonal, a LAZY man's solution, and "too easy". In my opinion there should be some time and effort involved in sending someone a greeting card, otherwise it's meaningless.Quote from: Allan on December 08, 2009, 05:54:57 AM
Personally I find e-cards impersonal, a lazy man's solution, and "too easy". In my opinion there should be some time and effort involved in sending someone a greeting card, otherwise it's meaningless.
I understand your point of view but here's my perspective on this. As I said, I have many relatives to whom I send, or should but occasionally forget to send, a card. So, this requires taking the time to visit a store that sells cards, selecting cards for each intended recipient, maybe writing a personal note in the card, putting in the envelope and sealing it, buying stamps if I have none on-hand, putting a stamp on it, and mailing it. The cost of cards is, IMO, disgustingly HIGH. Many of them are $3 or more. And then, you NEED postage to mail it.

So, the $12 subscription for the e-card service can quickly be recouped; just a few of them, in place of traditional cards will have recouped the subscription fee. From that point forward during the subscription year, I'm saving money each time I send another card since no ADDITIONAL cost will be incurred.

And, I'll say again that the quality of cards from jacquielawson.com/ is exceptionally good. Other e-card services are available, including some free ones, but they are not nearly as nice as jacquielawson.com/. The artwork, animation, and music background in each card is excellent. So, I'm banking on recipients being happy with the quality of what they see.

One final point: I would not necessarily use an e-card in all situations. For example, I don't think I'd use it for a wedding card. Newly weds may want to keep wedding cards for years for sentimental reasons. Another case might be sympathy cards in recognition of the loss of a family member. And that's fine. It's just something I can't see myself doing, that's all.
