Solve : Computer Power and Human Reason: Book Review?

Answer»

The book was written BACK in 1976. So why mention it now? Because it is still relevant, even more than before. Horrific TROUBLES have come because humans trust too much to the great power of computers. Now more and more people want computers to due things that are well DONE by REAL people.

The book was written by Joseph Weizenbau. At that time he was in the forefront of AI research using the equipment of the 60s and 70s.
The first time I saw his book I was just getting into computer programming and and set the book down. Later, I would find it was a very important classic work.

Here are some parts of the book . Introduction and chapter 10. Take a lookt:
http://blogs.evergreen.edu/cpat/files/2013/05/Computer-Power-and-Human-Reason.pdf

You can get a pauper back copy from Amazon. (English or German.)
https://www.amazon.com/Joseph-Weizenbaum/e/B001IXPUY4/ref=dp_byline_cont_book_1

If you are under 40 years of age, you should read this. And if you are over 40, it is not too late, Weizenbau goes easy on the hard stuff.
And do not skip chapters

Have you SEEN this book ?

Solve : Fre Gov Cell Phones. My Review.?

Answer» This is a review of a website.
http://www.freegovernmentcellphones.net/
Of course you can do a Google search on the topic and find dozens if not hundreds of websites that are telling you about the free government phones here in the United States.
The fact that the government phones are well-received is easy to understand. Many people have a real NEED for a free cell phone that they can use to look for work or make appointments or just contact relatives.

But it was a mild surprise to find out there are many, many very tiny companies that are participating in this free cell phone program. So I recommend this website as being possibly the best source of information about the free cell phone program. Of course, you'll want to search around and find information from other websites also. But this website is really a one-stop shopping mall for the best deals on free government phones.

The free phone system requires you to stick with one company for a one-year. So you may want to check ahead of time about what policies the companies have about lost or stolen cell phones. Some of the companies will let you replace a lost or stolen cell phone for just $20.
Be aware that this website also has quite a bit of commercial advertising. But it is a kind of advertising that is directed toward the audience. Some offer cheap phone plans from some of the major companies. So if you don't qualify for the free phone, this website is still a resource for the advertisements about low-cost cell phone plans.
Some states have added onto the federal standards and have imposed some more requirements of the free cell phone companies. In California the free data is now set at 500 MB instead of the previous 100 MB. So, you need to check to see if your mobile phone company is using the California plan to give you more free data.
Again, the full name of the website is:
http://www.freegovernmentcellphones.net/
Take a look. A lot of interesting information.
(This was done from dictation and there may be some strange grammar.)
One caveat: they don't vet the phones they hand out. This should be done especially if an older person is to receive the phone.

My sister-in-law, who is 78 and not the least bit computer literate got a free cellphone because she is on food stamps and Medicaid. Unfortunately, the phone is small with tiny buttons. She can't use it. It is just too hard for a senior citizen with vision problems and not great manual dexterity. As a result, after my husband called and worked through setting it up for her, she doesn't use it. She also locked it and didn't write down the code so I don't think she can even receive calls. (She can't afford a land line phone).

Senior citizens should actually been given bigger phones with larger buttons. You comment is valid.
First, you can call 611 on the phone and talk to the support people for the carrier. If the support is not to your liking, you can request that they free phone contract should be transferred to another company.
you may like to read this article from the New York Times:

Special phones for thee elderly do not have to be costly:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/nextavenue/2015/06/17/3-must-have-cell-phones-for-seniors/#dede98c72fd1

There is a way to get a free phone and then get a better cheap phone with big buttons. Then have them make t work with the number that was assigned to the free phone. If thee is a Metro PCS store in your area, just drop in and chat with them. Sometimes the sale people will give out free advice. Metro PCS is part of T-mobile and They have a free phone service under another name, TAG mobile.
I bought a NICE phone on-line and ordered a new SIM card from TAG for a modest cost. My monthly bill is still $0.00 for normal service.
Unfortunately, my sister-in-law can't be bothered doing this. Her usual response is either "I don't have the time" or "It is too much trouble". It then falls on my husband. (Her three children can't be bothered to help her). In fact, one of her sons bought her a Kindle for her birthday. Of course she can't figure out how to get it to work. Money would have been more useful to her.

I'm also not willing to learn how to set up a Kindle (she has no INTERNET access) and then try to teach her what to do. That would mean me driving back and forth to her apartment to get the device, figure it out, then hoping once I show her what to do she doesn't call me daily to drive over and show her again. She doesn't live close and the traffic close to where she lives is always gridlock. The government Phone program does not have tutorials for the elderly. The common adage is to let grandchild help.. A grandchild has to be in the range of 5 to 8 years of age with average IQ. For very high IQ, about 3 years old will do.

Also, siblings often do better then in laws for teaching smartphone methods. I aim SURE I have much better knowledge, but i twas my sister-in-laws ghat taught my wife, (Her sister) while VISITING here for about five days. (I was not present.)

Sorry, I am just telling the facts.

Solve : How to Synchronize Folders. Recomendation?

Answer»

From time to time the forum gets request from individuals about how to get two folders in step with the same content. Often this is some kind of BACKUP. But it can also a form of document sharing.

Principal source for this post us:
http://www.wikihow.com/Synchronize-Folders
-The above recommends use of TOOLS already in Windows.
With additional info from:
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/file-folder-synchronization-freeware
- The above recommends third-party software

For some reason not clear to me the above links do not mention :
SycToy - a free Microsoft program.
It has been reported that it does notwork one windows 8 thru 10. But there is afix for this issue. See LINK :
http://windowsreport.com/synctoy-windows-8-1-windows-10/
Quote

Usually the main issue with the Synctoy application is caused by the version you are running because if you RUN an older version of the Synctoy application it will most likely have some bugs while trying to synchronize your files even though your system does work and allows your files and folders to be saved to SyncToy
My recommendation. Before trying to write your own code, either in batch or another scrip, try USING some of the methods listed above. My favorite is SyncToy. But you have other good choices to save your time.

Earlier on this forum, SyncToy has often been mentioned as better than using your own homemade code.

Solve : Windows 10on aUSB Stick. My personal review.?

Answer» For the experiment used a $10 32 GB SanDisk from Walmart.

Windows 10 has been out for a year now and there are many things I get to learn about. One new trick was the ability to put Windows 10 on the USB stick and transported from one computer to another. In other words, a portable Windows operating system. And then I find out this feature was already in Windows 7 as well as Windows 8 and 8.1 and not just in Windows 10. However, there is a catch. Only certain versions of Windows 10 will do the portable USB trick.

Some investigation found there are third-party applications that will let you do the Windows on a stick thing with almost all versions of Windows 10 or Windows 8.
What I did not correctly understand was his need to have the Windows operating system already running on a computer before you make the USB stick with Windows on the USB. Even after reading over the articles I still didn't get it and I did it wrong.

At one point I couldn't get it to boot because I had another USB device PLUGGED into my computer and it interfered with the boot up. And then I tried it on my old computer using Windows 7 and it took the longest time to build the USB stick. And can you guess what happened? What file it did boot up it booted up in the Windows 7 and not Windows 10. That's pretty messed up because I was using a Windows 10 install ISO. So, at that point I a realized I had to pay more attention to the documentation.

So finally I did it the way you're supposed to with a third-party program. The program I used was a rather large program that does a lot of other things besides making Windows on a stick. It took me a while to figure out where the option was they needed.

Anyway, I finally got it right and it does work. But it sure surprised me. The first time you boot up from the USB drive it goes to the installation process just like your or installing Windows on the hard drive. It even asked for the product key, which I did not have. As you know, you can go ahead and use Windows 10 without the product key with some restrictions. I just wanted to see if would work, so I went ahead and finish the installation without the using a product key.

After that experience I can say that it does work, but I was wrong about saying that you could do it straight from an old computer without an operating system. That part is not true.

You have to first install Windows 10 on some type of internal storage device before you can make it run on the USB stick. And you also have to have the installation ISO available as a file during the process of building the Windows on a stick thing. Took me a while to realize that that's what they meant.

Anyway, it doesn't work. But that me tell you that you don't want a slow USB flash drive. It takes forever to install on a slow USB drive. Maybe that is why Microsoft recommends that you use USB drives that have been certified by Microsoft. I didn't, and it was very, very slow to install.

But once installed, it does put up within a reasonable amount of time and now I have a USB stick that I can take over to a troubled computer and boot up Windows 10 off of the USB stick. So it will make a GREAT repair tool for future use.

So there is my limited experience with putting Windows 10 on a USB stick. Again, I had to use a third-party software to get it to work for me. Doing It the Way, Microsoft recommends is just too difficult for me. I have a hard time with too much detail.
Quote
It even asked for the product key, which I did not have. As you know, you can go ahead and use Windows 10 without the product key with some restrictions. I just wanted to see if would work, so I went ahead and finish the installation without the using a product key.

Interesting... I never tried installing Windows without a product key before. I didnt know that it could be done. On the screen that asks for the product key, I have never seen a skip or activate later option. So when testing out software for example without wanting to ruin a regular system, I would reinstall and use a product key for that install for that system and not activate it for 30 days as the evaluation period and then that gave me adequate time to see if a software app was good or bad or if there were trojans or other surprises bundled with an installer without infecting or making a mess out of my actual system that I use daily.

Prior to this with XP, I use to just ghost image and reimage a system to etch-a-sketch it back clean for the next software to try with a activated version of XP Pro. For Windows 7, skipping Vista because I didnt like Vista, I have gone the installation process method and just not activated it to test and then wipe it clean. Then I started using Macrium Reflect to clone a master activated windows 7 drive to another and the master drive is placed into storage in an ESD bag and when its time to wipe the test system clean again I just clone overtop of the 2nd drive using the master and then remove the master drive and use the test drive for testing.

Software that I then trust gets added to a external drive that i have and I add a text file with notation as to if I need to deselect bundled software etc for the install. The installers and the installations are also scanned for malware too and Malwarebytes picks up on which ones have bundled surprises.

* I wish there was an ability to open an installation file and strip the bundleware and create a clean installer at times. Havent found one yet but some software I have I know has low level spyware etc and I know after installation i need to just do a clean up. Sometimes you can avoid bundled junk by making sure to get it from the creator of the software, but sometimes the creator adds stuff to the installation because that is how they make the software free, but your data collected by spyware to those who pay the company that is offering the so-called FREE software.

Getting back to topic of your win 10 on a stick, are you running it in a BartPE or Windows PE environment or is it say a Live Linux Distro with a VMware that launches a Windows 10 VM running on the USB stick? *That is sort of the only way I have seen Windows run as Windows vs a PE environment on a USB stick without illegal hackery.I did try a third-party program that lets you use a PE. But I eventually used a program that seems to have some other kind of approach. Or else it did not explain what is was doing.
Of general interest:

And there are even more. Some partition managers now include a wizard for making Windows On A Stick.

Yes, one cam ignore e the product key and go ahead and install Windows 10 for most versions. It will disable some advanced features.

I think you have to have the version installed on a hard drive before you can make the portable USB stick. And you have to have on hand the ISO file for the smae install. Version I used was downloaded a few weeks AGO and is not the same as the one I got last year. I did a clean install of the recent version.
Isn't this against the Windows EULA? Just asking.
Salmon Trout,
That is a valid question. My feeling, and only a feeling, is that Microsoft will not push to strongly enforce their legal rights until they know it is in their best interest.

Outright code stealing and bad representation, of course, will be prosecuted. But home users who just want to experiment with older computers might not be TARGETED. Unless they do something blatant.

I was wrong about how it must be installed. You must already have a PC with Windows 10 on it and activated. But how the portable device is legal is not clear to me. I haven't been able to prove that it truly is portable.

Now to that fascinating Windows to Go feature. In theory you can choose a USB flash or other external drive as destination, an Windows 8.1 WIM (Windows Install Media)/ISO file as the source, and create a live version of Windows 8.x on said external drive that will boot from any PC. In practice, my first try resulted in a program-halting error. I emailed Aomei, and they had a fixed version for download in place the next day. It worked perfectly, creating a bootable version of Window 8.1 Pro. Quick work that. Kudos.
That is the version that works best for me. Your mileage may vary. Quote from: Salmon Trout on August 03, 2016, 02:28:01 PM

Solve : Ethernet Color Codes Video. My Review.?

Answer»

Have you ever wondered how the UTP wires on the standard Ethernet CABLE are color coded? Have you every tried to replace a broken connector? Even if you have the right tool, you need to know what the colors in the cable mean. Or where each ones goes into the connector before you squeeze it.
As you have found, you only get one try with the connector. I found a video that makes it clear what you have to do to get it right.

Solve : About Comcast Internet essentials. Review?

Answer»

Using Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

My personal experience with Comcast Internet essentials.

In a word: Excellent. In fact, far above the ordinary. The technician had to come out to my house and replace a very long drop WIRE because the cable was very old and damaged. No charge and he worked for over an hour to get everything set right.

No problem with the modem. In fact, it is not just a cable modem. It is a true Wi-Fi router suitable for home use. The user interface for this router is super simple and has a graphical user interface that most people should catch onto right away. I really didn't have to look at the documentation, although I guess now I should have. Finally had to look it up to see where I could change the wireless password. Very simple, it's under the section called Wi-Fi. Don't know why I didn't think of that.
Anyway, it really works good.
As you already know the Internet essentials from Comcast is a SPECIAL deal for people who are on the low wind of the economic ladder. That's me, I've been retired now for several years and I'm living on ALMOST exclusively my Social Security. My daughter and her husband and their daughter are living with us. The grandchild goes to an elementary school that has a lunch program. So that qualifies our household to receive the Comcast Internet essentials. Now we have an Internet connection that runs about 15 Mb on downloads. Now that may not sound very fast, but consider the cost. It is just under $10 a month. Actually, $9.95 to be exact. This is the same Bill for every month and there is no contract involved and no upfront installation costs. I did not have to pay for the modem. And as mentioned, it is a new state-of-the-art modem that Comcast does use for its high-priced customers. So yes, I am extremely satisfied with the service I received from Comcast. Best deal ever. (In the past I have used Digital Path, AT&T, Comcast and my ANDROID phone for access to the Internet.
But in order to get the service in your area, the must already be an existing Comcast drop wire going to your house. So if you had Comcast a few years back and the cable is still there, you might qualify if you are now in the low income bracket and have a child in your household that goes to an elementary school with a lunch program.
Now please don't tell me this is a waste of taxpayer money. Today people have to have some kind of communication system in their home the goes beyond just radio and TV. The elementary schools are not getting into Internet for the children. Some of the kids will be expected to have their parents help them do research over the Internet on current topics that are being considered at school. Yes, there is a public library here in town. But you have to have a car and running condition to get there and back. In this COMMUNITY there are many parents that just cannot take the time to take their child to the public library and spend a couple of hours there and then drive back home. And don't talk to me about bus service. This is Northern California and this community is a semi rural sprawl with very limited public transportation.
Actually, I have no idea of how much of this is sponsored by the government. As far as I know, Comcast is footing the bill by itself. If anybody out there knows more about this, please post a comment.

Solve : Comcast Extemds Free Luch Internet for $10. My Review.?

Answer»

If a child in your home gets free lunch, your family may qualify for Comcast $10 a month Internet.
My daughter and grandchild moved in with US. I didn't have a DECENT internet connection. So I applied to Comcast fort the free lunch $10 Internet.

Woks great. Had to have tech come out and repair some old cable that had become damaged. He did his job and now I am on line with speeds up to 12 megabit. No mention of any kind of bandwidth restraint. I recommend it.

Of course this is the first day. If it fails, I will report back here .

To see if it is in your area, do search on:
Comcast Internet Essentials.
Enter your details and see if your might qualify.
Bear in MIND the program is for the benefit of the elementary school child. So get the KID a new TABLET with Wi-Fi.

Best list of good free stuff.
http://www.thefreecountry.com/
This does not seem to be a paid advertisement. Just real list of what is out there, Good, Bad and Ugly.
They also list free scripts, cheap web HOSTING and lots of things for free. And besides the usual list of Linux distros, there are other OS FREEBIES listed.
I commend this sites as your first step when looking for good free stuff. Or even bad free stuff.

The free e-mail list:
http://www.thefreecountry.com/webmaster/freeemail.shtml

Might be useful. Some of the listings are a bit old: in the "Free BASIC Compilers and Interpreters" section I looked to see what they say about FreeBasic, and saw: "At the time this was written, the COMPILER is still very new, and has little documentation.". FreeBasic v0.0.1 was released in November 2004 and at this time (nearly 12 years later) has gone through many versions (Windows 32 & 64, MS_DOS and Linux) and is considered a well ESTABLISHED compiler with very extensive documentation.

The old stuff is good stuff. In the "Information Organiser Hardware", it had the Rolodex, "as used by the new President, Mr Roosevelt".

It's not really a scare tactic because users that tun Reimage on a new machine will see no difference in performance and will ask for a refund which they get. As such, we don't want to "repair" such machines as we have costs involved in the repair and refund process.

Hi, I had someone from the technical team go over this, to clarify. Here is what he has to say:

The reason that we install something is that we need a process to run during the start-up phase. We do this so that when the machine has booted we confirm that the repair took place properly. At this point, if needed, the user may undo the repair and claim their money back if not satisfied. The user gets a refund in return for a feedback on their experience so we can perfect the user experience and the repair quality. After the first reboot this will no longer be in the start-up, for obvious reasons.

Hope it makes sense.

Dear Broni,

A lot of our customers were interested in this as they didn't always have the time to wait for the repair to end. So we received a lot of requests for a reminder feature, this way we save people the hassle of having to install again. Solve : What would you recommend??

Answer»

I have a very basic knowledge of computers, my current laptop is coming to the end of its life and I need a new ONE. I WOULD like a two in one or a tablet (I'm open for recommendations for which one would be better). I need one that I can physically write with a pen with and it will convert it to typed text (I like to do creative writing but I like to physically write RATHER than type). I'm not sure whether I can get something basic and just download software that accomplishes this or if I need a laptop with these pen tech capabilities. I would also do some drawing on it and would use it for essays and such for school. Do you have anything in mind that you could RECOMMEND? I'm finding myself lost in all the options so any help you can provide would be great! What sort of budget do you have? A pen input is a specialised thing - You need a laptop that supports it out of the box, you can't just get a pen that will work. You will see cheap touch screen stylus things online but they aren't suitable for writing accurately - A laptop with a proper pen input is very similar to those Wacom graphics tablets where the pen is tracked extremely accurately and with pressure sensitivity.

Off the top of my head I can think of the Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga which provides pen input - It's a great machine but is also quite expensive. You can probably get it used for a reasonable price. There are also older laptops such as the ThinkPad x230t and x220t (note the "t" on the end of the model) which can be picked up very cheaply used/refurbished, although they are a BIT more bulky than a modern convertible machine.

Solve : Adblock Plus filters for Facebook?

Answer»

I don't use Facebook much but do use it. Facebook has been getting worse and worse about throwing junk in my face that I care nothing about and today Adblock Plus added filters specific to Facebook ads.

There are 3 options.

*Block all Facebook annoyances
*Block only sidebar annoyances
*Block only news feed annoyances

Just go here, scroll down and make your selection. If you don't have Adblock Plus installed you can get it from the official Adblock Plus website.I use adblock plus myself and have used it to disable some facebook junk. In the adblock plus options you can select "just this page" or something along the same lines so that facebook still functions, but it remembers that next time that same unwanted feature triggers it will be blocked.

I use to play games on facebook, but gave up on them. My biggest complaint is that to have a game full screen its LIKE pulling teeth as for the stupid facebook ad clutter is always trying to intrude on the display space. I found though that right-clicking on the game app you can sometimes get them to run in their own window and then this way you maximize that window and the ads are all gone etc. However the games that FB has I have learned are fun at the beginning and then all of them are designed to progress further you need to have a supporting GROUP of people, and this has given me a distaste for FB games. Some games you just want to solo play and noy have to get 5 friends in on it and then levels down the ROAD you need another 5 people to JOIN etc.

Thanks for the recommendation evil, that makes Facebook a lot more usable! And then... This Just In: AdBlock Plus Still Uses a Lot of Memory

I have been aware of an impact from ABP but didn't realize it's this bad.

yeah this is the reason I've stayed away from certain add ons. I'm not too bothered by the ads because I end up just ignoring them. Seriously, if you asked me to say at least one ad that came up during a half hour on facebook, I wouldn't be able to tell you. Either I'm amazing at just ignoring the ads, or my memory is absolutely horrendous.

But i try to keep to a few light add ons to make sure that everything still runs smoothly and I still get to do the things that I want. It's EASY to overlook the fact that most add-ons are actually the same thing as toolbars. They are compacted into a little button but that doesn't mean they have less of an an impact on performance or are any safer than a full toolbar.I installed adblock plus and now a couple days later I get this weird message from Facebook telling me it wants to scan my PC for malware lol. I have eset so I know I don't have malware. I don't think FB like adblockers stopping them from making money.

Solve : Recommentations for new laptop?

Answer»

Hello , so i got a small problem about choosing between 3 laptops and just cant decide myself :
1. Acer Aspire V17 Nitro Black Edition – VN7-792G -its with new skylake and DDR4 with gtx 960m 4GB GDDR5 and 256ssd+1tb hdd
2. Lenovo Ideapad Y700 80Q0005NBM -same spec but without the ssd
3. ASUS GL552VW-CN211D same spec +ssd but the GPU gtx 960m is with 2 GB ram

they all are around the same price +-100 euro , my question is which one is more stable and better quality i will use it most for games, i know desktop are better but because i am always on the move cant handle with the desktop pc.I'd Prefer the ASUS first, then Lenovo, then Acer when it COMES to quality. Lenovo is 2nd place because they have had some laptops with overheating issues in the PAST with Core i5 and i7s. Acer ( the new COMPANY that originated out of the ashes of the original Acer brand I have HEARD mixed quality and performance with. So its 3rd. thx for the TIP Actually, the new Asus GL552 build quality isn't considered high
Moreover, there are more options, like the Dell 7559I would go with choice 1 of the 3. You will be much happier with game load time on a ssd vs hdd. It's a night and day difference. compared to choice 3 the graphics will be better as well.

Solve : Make A Media Server for Roku?

Answer»

This is a recommendation for a tutorial on another site.
The link is below:
How to Set Up a Home Media Server You Can Access From Any Device

This is new information about how to use some new free software that will work with almost any wireless media device you might have. Not just the Roku. It even works for your smartphone.

Note: The services he recommends might have a monthly charge for some features. Read the details.

I have yet to try it all, but I seems to fill the bill for what I was looking for.

My laptop does not have a HDMI output. My 10 inch Android tablet has a HDMI port that does not work. Bummer! So I use a Roku to watch movies from Hulu or Amazon prime.

But I would also like to use stuff I have downloaded. So the need to have a home server that can send to the Roku over wireless. I have some stuff that is not available over the internet yet.

That I why I recommend the article on the How To Geek web site.
Quote

The two biggest solutions to recommend are probably Plex and Media Browser. Both work similarly, offering a server you install on a desktop PC, laptop, NAS device, or dedicated home server.
...
Media Browser offers clients for the Roku and some other TV-streaming devices, INCLUDING Chromecast support. There are also mobile apps for for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and Windows 8. Want to use it on a COMPUTER? There’s a convenient web-based interface.

Both have fairly similar features, although Plex definitely offers a more comprehensive suite of apps — PlayStation, Xbox, and Fire TV support, for example. However, some Plex services cost money. The iOS Plex app costs $5, and the Xbox and PlayStation app both require a “Plex Pass” subscription that will cost you $5 a month.
Let me know if you like.
Darn.... was hoping there was a firmware hack or something to edit Roku to add a link to a local file server or something like that. I have the Roku Model 1 and its great, but your locked to only whatever Roku wants you to see. On my BluRay player there was and ability to connect to a cast on a local media server and find it in the devices menu tree and play movies streaming over private local network. Only drawback was that the movies had to be a specific format to work and all this time I have set them up to work on portable devices as AVI and the player wanted WMV. Yet, if you plug a 32GB or smaller FAT32 external hard drive or USB stick into the rear or front USB port on the player it supported both AVI and WMV, so I ended up instead of leaving a system running as a server just selecting what movies or show seasons to add to a thumb drive and pop that onto my blueray and play them that way.

There might be additional features for Roku2 and Roku3 that I dont have. I got my Roku1 for $35 about a year ago in Oklahoma while out on a business trip and hotel tv stunk but they had free wireless. Used my netbook to change its mac address to match that of the roku and get onto their wifi and agree to the free internet access option to create the IP Lease for the Roku1 that couldnt access the hotels website to accept TERMS and conditions. Changed the mac address BACK to original mac address of netbook and turned Roku1 on and instantly had all the channels that were free until I linked Netflix and Hulu to it etc and then added Sling.

Was hoping there was going to be a jailbreaker for Roku in this to add CUSTOM links to streams and features etc. For what it is worth.
There is a Roku forum that is involved in updates to the Roku.

Solve : Recommendations for Buying a New Dell Laptop?

Answer»

I need to buy a new laptop and the more I look for one the more my head spins. I'm pretty good at using a computer but not that savvy about hardware or software with all the the factors involved. Recently I made a really bad decision when I bought a cheap All-In-One from Dell. It turned out that the processor is not powerful enough to do much other than basic emails, etc. I enjoy making small videos and using Photoshop for my own projects and I'm very disappointed that I can't do that with my new desktop.

Now, my laptop is on it's last legs and I want to make sure I don't make any huge mistakes again. I'd like to stick with Dell since my old Dell laptop was quite good while it lasted. I'd like to get the best deal I can for roughly $500-$700. I don't want touch screen. I'd like a screen that is about 17".

I've looked at the Dell site, Walmart, Costco and Amazon and I just get so confused with all the options. I'm especially concerned about the processor.

Any recommendations, advice, comments, pointing to other threads or other help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I live in Hawaii so most companies won't ship here for free. That limits my choices.

This request should not be in this SECTION. The moderator will move it
Bu to answer your request.
This is just an opinion.
I think you should buy a good Dell Desktop and add to it a good Graphics card. You do not need a super CPU, but you do need a good Graphics card.
Having said that, avoid the low end CPUs. Don't let people talk you into getting a cheep AMD thong. Get one of the recent Intel processors. Typically a socket 1150 or better. And stay away from the all in one. Too hard to expand or repair.
Example:
Dell Optiplex 9010 Core i5 3.4GHz
This is in the mid price range for just the desktop with no monitor.
Or even the Dell Optiplex 7010 Intel Core i5 3.20GHz is a good value.
Do not bu the small SIZE units. Too hard to expand.
Just my thoughts. Sorry to be in the wrong section. I thought recommendations sounded like the right place. I see now that when it SAYS, "Do not post questions here" it meant in the thread. I thought it meant in that post. I'm a little nervous posting on this site at all because I know so little about computers compared to most of the people who post here.

Thanks for your reply but I'm stuck with the All-In-One for now.

What I'm shopping for now is a good laptop. I need to be able to move it from place to place. I'll keep the points you made in mind, though. When buying a laptop you must choose from these five:

A. Long battery life.
B. Lightweight, small size.
C. Touchscreen and keyboard
D. High performance.

You can get 3 or 4 out of five. But not all five. IMO.

Forgot to mention price.

It also comes with a built-in 720p webcam, dual microphones, and a pre-installed version of Skype, so chatting with your friends couldn’t be easier.
No, I do NOT work for Dell.
Thanks so much for your advice. I think I have enough info now to make a decision.

The offer you listed is no longer available but I was able to use the details to help me choose a Dell 5000 series 17.3" laptop from Amazon that looks pretty good for $405.58.

The reviews are good and, although the processor is only "middle of the road," the price is right. The only other complaint is that it's heavy which isn't a real problem for me since I will only use it at home.

Thanks again. Wish me luck!Quote from: jmvoya on September 23, 2015, 01:51:22 PM

Which specific machine is this on Amazon? Can you link it?It might be this:
http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-MaxxAudio-Upgrade-Windows/dp/B00XQXZM7O
But it seems the price has changed.
That model has some options. Lake a 64 GB SSD, which ups the price.

The vendors are changing prices on some of the popular new convertible laptops. Hard to keep up. The earlier link I had was from Extreme Tech and they did not update it. At one time they said it was $330 after discounts. Not Now!

EDIT: Gartnerr said prices would go up.
PC prices to go up later this year, Gartner warns
That was published back in April.
Sorry, I didn't see this earlier.

This is what I bought and the price has actually gone down slightly.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XQXZLVG?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

I have received it and have only updated to Windows 10 so far but it seems to be a good laptop for the price.

The other one (linked by Geek above) looks like it might be a little better for only a slightly higher price but it's not Amazon Prime so it would have cost a lot to ship it to Hawaii.

I plan to add some more RAM to it soon. I'd like to buy it from Amazon but I'm not sure how to tell exactly which kind to buy. Can anyone help me with that, please?

Solve : Thinkpad T410: My thoughts?

Answer»

I bought my Dad a THINKPAD T410 with an I5 520M CPU and 4 GB of ram for the low price of $100 including shipping!

My impressions with the machine are that it runs alot better then my Toughbook CF-C2 with almost the same specs!

I like it and think now it's the second best computer in the house behind my 2015 MacBook Pro i7 with 16 GB of ram (COLLEGE comp)

I don't like that the sound is so quiet on the machine even with headphones.....

Overall it's a great machine and will defiantly benefit from a SSD (need cheap suggestions please!)

Solve : finally decided.... or have I??

Answer»

I am looking at a Thinkpad E520 and E430 and it's now between the two.... both are at a good price!

The Thinkpad E520 has an i5-M540 with 4GB of Ram and 500GB 7200 HDD (I have this setup in my Toughbook CF-C2.... slower than molasses)

The Thinkpad E430 has an i3-2350M with 2 GB of Ram and 320GB HDD (maybe 7200?)

need to decide SOON and WOULD like to get your opinions soon..... For the RAM you would REALLY want to get 4gb which would put you towards the E520. The i5 M540 certainly shouldn't be slow for general use. Adding an SSD later on could also be a decent idea since I doubt your father needs lots of storage, this would make the machine a whole lot snappier.

I'd also be inclined to recommend looking at the ThinkPad T series such as the T510 and T520 (equivalent spec of the E520 and E430 respectively). The E series are good but aren't as well made as the T series. I wouldn't pay a fortune more but if you can get one around the same price I'd go for that.ok so a T410 with an Intel CORE i5 M520 4GB ram and 320GB hard driveI just bought a T410 with an Intel Core i5 M520 4GB ram and 320GB hard drive for $110 shipped.... thanks for all the information!Nice, looks good, it's a great machine!

Solve : Graphic Design Laptop Recommendation Needed?

Answer»

I'm LOOKING for an extremely light weighted laptop that's thin and PREFERABLY silver (layout similar to macbook pro)

The laptop will be used throughout college, and mainly for graphic design class using apps from creative suite such as photoshop, illustrator, and other adobe programs as well as web browsing

Mostly importantly, I need the laptop to be fast and "light weight and thin" with screen similar to retina display

Budget around $800

Any recommendation?

Solve : 21:9 Ultrawide monitors?

would LIKE to get a 21:9 ultrawide monitor for my project.... how are they? what brand would you recommend? What project is this? If you want to run one big application such as a game across it then they are great but for general use you would probably be better off with TWO separate monitors. For example if you were to want to watch a video in full screen on an ultrawide you would need to fill the whole screen (and have black bars at either side) whereas with two monitors you can make it full screen on one while doing other stuff on the other. Just SOMETHING to bear in mind with them.ok well I would have 3 display setup from my macbook pro.... I GOT a dell and my mac's internal screen which I have both plus a touchscreen or 21:9 Ultrawide monitor in horizontal ORIENTATION depending on what I could get..... I will be building a desk housing the monitors in with cooling

Solve : Boot up Anti Virus scanners.?

Answer»

A Boot up AV Scanner is a SET of tools on a CD that you can boot up on a badly INFECTED system. Some of these are really Linux on a CD tact has the ability to scan Windows DRIVES for any malware.
The ones I recommend are:

AVIRA Rescue System
Bitdefender Rescue CD
Kaspersky Rescue Disk

These are updated from time to time and you shod get a NEW copy even if you already have one. They are free, you just need a blank CD.

For more about these and other free Boot able AV tools:

15 Free Bootable Antivirus Tools

You need one of these if ever a malware cripples your system to the point where you lose control.

Solve : New MSI GT72 Dominator G-1445 Review?

Answer» link to other site review
Price: $1500 MSRP, but I've seen it for $1400 or so

In short, pros:
+ Very good temperatures, both of the GT72 body and CPU/GPU
+ Very good keyboard
+ Very good 3D performance with room for GPU OC
+ Good sound quality for a laptop
+ Nice IPS 1080p display
+ Not loud
+ 4xM.2 for storage
+ DisplayPort, HDMI, 2 x USB 3.1
+ GSync enabled by default
+ 16GB RAM
+ MXM replaceable GPU

Cons:
- bulky/big, not really on the mobile side
- not lightweight as other LAPTOPS with GTX 970M
- Did I miss anything important?

There are other laptops with such a 3D performance, but usually they lack GSync and we consider the Clevo laptops (like the P650s), no OS included in price and with 16GB RAM, the price comes close to the GT72. Also, the MXM GPU

So, bottom line, very good 17.3" gaming laptop, except size and weight

Thoughts?OK, looks impressive.
But how do I know MSI will still be around two years from now?

Attainment is from http://blog.laptopmag.com/laptop-brand-ratings
It shows that MSI came to fourth place from nowhere.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]It's just a typical "gamer" laptop - Really nothing special about it over the multitude of similar machines from the likes of ASUS and Lenovo.

It will do the JOB if you absolutely must have a laptop but in most cases you would be better off getting a desktop for gaming and a cheap laptop for when you need portability.

I wouldn't really look at it having an MXM GPU as a massive benefit other than replacing the card if it fails - MXM GPUS are very tricky for compatibility and are extremely hard to buy, even when you do find them for sale they are impractically expensive.Quote from: camerongray on July 10, 2015, 03:26:55 AM

1. Many laptops are typical. In this case, it's slightly different as you get some other stuff for the price point (though I would wait for the price to go down). Other laptops, including MSI, Asus, Gigabyte do not offer GSync and USB 3.1 currently + good thermals. Not that it's that special, but still
2. MXM GPUs are not extremely hard to buy, but they are not cheap when new and you need a bios update. However, thinking few years ahead, if your laptop still lives, you can replace your MXM with some used GPU

Anyway, it's for people to know

Solve : Third party launchers for Android?

Answer»

I don't write much anymore so sorry this is so long. I lost interest in blogging...

BACK story - I have 2 Samsung Galaxy S4's because I recently had to change mobile providers so got a FREE phone with the contract. Looking back I REALLY wish I would have gone with the LG G3 instead of another S4 (I don't much care for the S5) but that's another topic...

My non-networked Sprint S4 updated to Lollipop recently and that's cool except for the fact that it completely borked TouchWiz. (FYI - TouchWiz is Samsungs 'touch user interface' software). I still use my non-networked Sprint S4 at home with Wifi mainly as a docked Wifi/Bluetooth music player so I have really GROWN used to it to working as it should.

I have tried several launchers in the past out of curiosity but they never had any lasting appeal. Now I am forced to use one to replace my broken Sprint S4 TouchWiz. Launchers have come a long way over the years and I'm kind of glad I had to check them out again. It took a while but I narrowed the field down to two.

For a robust "free" option my choice might be EverythingMe Launcher. If you want to get lost for a few HOURS in mindless non-productive tweaking this is a good solution. The downside for me is that it's loaded with non-intrusive adware in the form of suggested apps. I MAY have went with this launcher if they had a paid version without the adware.

What I settled on is the paid version of Nova Launcher. Compared to most of everything else I tried it's more my style in what it offers and how it works. I had no problem buying the $4.99 full version before I even finished exploring the free versions abilities. To me it is that good and I don't mind helping out developers by buying the full version app when I can.

For honorable mentions and different styles of launchers check out this Android Central article. The best Android launchers of 2015I've been using the paid version of Apex Launcher for years and am very happy with it. Nova and Apex are VERY similar.I don't know why but I never installed Apex. I kept meaning to but then forgot, several times.

I think Google is feeling pressure to get their own hardware development going or at least gain a partner they can fully trust to stay with them. Samsung is Androids biggest OEM but some think they are showing signs of jumping ship and going on their own against Android and Apple. SourceIce Cream Sandwich just hit for me. Good stuff.

Now I wonder how long before Jelly Bean hits. Rumors are mid July and lucky me the XOOM is on the short list of devices first in line. :-) Did yolu see this?

Solve : Recommended Reading: Open WI-FI?

Answer»

May I recommend a article? It has some rough edges, but he hits on a very touchy SUBJECT that will INFLUENCE our future Internet access.

The term used is 'Open Spectrum'. It means Open WI-FI. Here it is not about security, but about letting anybody get into the Internet if they obey rules of common sense. Plain common sense means you do not have to pay for things that are free. Like the Air is free. Water is free. Open space is free. Common sense says that you will get thrown in jail if you use your freedom to harm others. But you never pay a fee to be a GOOD citizen.

Yes, MARCONI is credited with the practical use of radio propagation, the basis for modem communication without wires. Yet nobody today pays royalties to the Marconi family. Do they?

For a number of years the FCC of the United States has been selling VHF and UHF spectrum to the highest bidder. The spectrum used by free 802.11 devices is in the top of the UHF and into the SHF bands. It is a very small slice of the pie. It needs to be expanded in a large way.

Here is the article I want you to read:

CPU: i7-4910MQ
GPU: GTX 980m SLI
RAM: 16 GB DDR3
SSD: 500GB Samsung 850 EVO for Sager/ 500GB Samsung 840 EVO
HDD: 1TB 7200 RPM

From xoticpc.com the Sager NP9377 is $3301. From Eurocom it's $4202 with the 120hz display option I'd like. I'm also trying to GET a PRICE match plus the cost of the 120hz display option. Is there any reason to consider one brand over the other? Sager doesn't offer a 120hz display option anymore so I might go with Eurocom if they offer a price match, plus the cost of the 120hz display; otherwise I going to settle with the Sager and the 60hz display because the Eurocom configuration a lot more expensive. Thanks.

Solve : Web Of Trust?

Answer»

On a whole, I love Web Of Trust (commonly referred to as WOT). It WARNS me when I visit sites that have been rated too poorly, and I can read other users' comments on the sites. It shows up next to Google search results, and steers me away from unsavory sites. WOT, along with Firefox's Phishing and Malware protection, Comodo DNS, up-to-date antivirus software, and web-smarts (street smarts for the 21st Century) have kept my computer relatively safe over the years.

What I've noticed, is that a lot of times people only rate sites they feel are bad, to ensure that nobody unknowingly installs adware or junkware. That's great and all, but of WOT's algorithm to prevent fake ratings[1] can make it so these ratings have little-to-no effect. A prime example of this issue is the rating for Conduit.com, a site which adds (sometimes with no opt-out option, sometimes with users still opting out[2]) toolbars, junkware, and adware to users' computers (OFTEN through deceit[3]), and changing their homepage to a fake Google search (where they pump up affiliate sites in the results[4]). This site packages its software with legitimate programs like μTorrent and is known to be difficult to remove, staying on the user's computer after uninstalling the parent program, using the Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs option, and using professional software[5].

With all that in mind, one would think they would have a similar `Reputation` to Screensavers.com[6] (a common adware propagating website), but in all 4 rating categories (`Trustworthiness`, `Vendor reliability`, `Privacy`, and `Child safety`) Conduit.com scores above 85/100[7]. But wait, the people commenting tend to STRONGLY DISAGREE with this rating.

Statistics[8]:
Spam - - 1
Annoying ads or popups - - 13
Phishing or other scams - - 13
Browser exploit - - 91
Spyware or adware - - 12
Ethical issues - - 1
Useless - - 4
Other - - 9

Annoying ads or popups, Phishing or other scams, BROWSER EXPLOIT, and SPYWARE OR ADWARE should be enough on their own to put the ratings for Conduit.com down and send red flags each time someone visits the site. Something is definitely wrong here, both on Conduit.com, and myWOT.com's `Scorecard` for it. Web Of Trust's `Scorecard FAQ`[9] says that "A site's reputation is computed from ratings, not comments. Leaving a comment is completely optional and meant to provide more information," but when comments completely go against the current ratings - and are only visible when people click through to the scorecard (which is never suggested unless the site receives poor ratings) - MANY users could install adware, malware, or other junkware, when they think they are installing legitimate software because WOT says the site is `Excellent`.

I still feel that Web Of Trust should be a recommended addon for all browsers, but it is not a replacement for any kind of security software, or web-smarts.

Surf safely, my friends.

Web Of Trust download: Click HereYou have to keep in mind that the comments and ratings on scorecards are separate. Comments are just comments and have no bearing on the rating. Many, many more people usually rate websites then there are those who rate and comment so yes some sites that seem like they should have low ratings are actually pretty hard to change since obviously way more people rated positively.

I'm not surprised that Conduit has a green scorecard because it should. Conduit toolbars in malware removal forums are almost always left alone (users choice) because they are not malicious. Many people when installing something just click, click, click and don't bother to deny certain features so they call it malicious or whatever when it is actually just user error.

Quote from: Helpmeh

What I've noticed, is that a lot of times people only rate sites they feel are bad, to ensure that nobody unknowingly installs adware or junkware.

True. But there are those who rate good websites as well as bad ones. Just search for the word 'official' in the search box on the WOT Forums.

If you do ever run into a website that you know should be rated differently (either green, yellow or red) then just start a topic in the WOT Forums with your reason for disagreeing with the rating and others will join in and get to the bottom of it.

I'm just saying that 91 people commented saying it's a browser exploit; 26 that it's annoying, phishing, or a scam; 12 said that it's spyware, and 6 more for other negative sections. If 135 out of 144 total people are saying it's such a bad site (possibly more, including some of the "other" category), and that's only including people who not only have WOT, but are commenting, then MAYBE SOMETHING IS WRONG.

Maybe the site itself is totally OK, as long as you don't install their software. That seems to be the only logical explanation for why it has an excellent rating.I checked the profiles of the first 10 or so comments from the Conduit scorecard. They all had relatively low ratings activity. People with low activity have less "power" to influence a scorecard. That "power" level is reduced even more if they are rating in the opposite direction as those who have high activity scores. A high activity score means you have more "power" and can turn a scorecard from red to green or vice versa with just a few ratings from power users much easier than with even 100's of low level ratings. Its not always 100% accurate. Used along with some common since and it can be quite effective.

Solve : PDF Converter?

Answer»

I recently USED this free online PDF Converter and found it very useful.

I convert a NEWSLETTER of a local church from a Word (.doc) document to PDF and upload it to the website every month. The Administrative Assistant who WORKS in the church office actually uses WordPerfect to create it and converts it to a Word 2003 file before she sends it to me. I would normally open it on my Windows XP system, which has Office 2003, and also has PrimoPDF installed, and convert it to PDF by selecting PrimoPDF as the "printer". This works fine but my Windows XP system is having some downtime now and I needed to find another way to convert the file. My Windows 7 system has Office 2007 but, when I open the document in Word 2007, the layout GETS changed and those changes carry over to a PDF file created from the Word file.

I tried the free version of PDF Converter and it CONVERTED the file without making any changes to the layout. To do this, I save the file outside of the email from the Administrative Assistant and then select it to upload to PDF Converter. The newsletter is a fairly large file and a few minutes will pass before the conversion is completed. The website tells me when the converted file is ready to be downloaded and I merely click on the Download button to download it. They also send an email notification that the file is ready.

The company name at the bottom of the main page for requesting a conversion is Baltsoft. Using the free conversion service requires waiting 30 minutes to convert another file. Users who want to use the service with no such restriction can chose from several paid options. See http://www.freepdfconvert.com/membership.asp for details.

Solve : iRulu 10" Android Tablet Review?

Answer»

Awhile back I bought a 10 inch Irulu Android tablet with keyboard. Overall, it has been a disappointment. Of course, the price was very low. Ir is a ice cream sandwich 4.0 version. Keyboard is optional. Haas 8 GB.

Some programs work good. The new version of Netflix from Google store is OK.
This video from You Tube echos my own observations. In short, I will keep it. But I wish I have saved my money for something else.

The iRulu 10" Android Tablet Review

Bottom line: Ten inch toy with keyboard.

Interesting review, thanks. I had never heard of iRulu before.

Personally, I think the 10" form factor is too big for a tablet, if I go that big, I'd rather have a netbook or laptop.

The price of this tablet is pretty low but I'd much rather have my Nexus 7 (Android KitKat) or my Dell Venue 8 Pro (Win 8.1). Both are more expensive but worth it to me. I prefer the smaller form factor since, IMO, they are more portable than the larger tablets.Perfect example of you get what you pay for...MINE lasted 5 months.Well, this is a review about the little known Irulu tablet.
Yes, a 7 inch android without a keyboard would have been a better chicle. But I already had a 7 inch and I though the larger size would help. The keyboard is nice, but it is not very portable. You have to have a flat surface to make it work.
The 7 inch Androids cost less and some are better, IMHO. But hared for me to use.
I want to keep the 10 inch Irulu with keyboard it because I have to have a keyboard. I don't have pointy fingers. What stops you from using a keyboard with a 7" tablet?Quote from: strollin on March 02, 2014, 10:26:56 PM

What stops you from using a keyboard with a 7" tablet?
Nothing. My old 7 inch android works OK with keyboard. But it did not come with a keyboard. The NEWER 10 inch has a nice case for both keyboard and the Android. Nice package.
To tell the truth, the old 7 inch works as good or better as the 10 inch.
I had high hopes. I thought the case/keyboard was an extra, the tablet actually came with those items? That makes the deal somewhat better.

BTW, there is an issue with the link in your first post, the link is entered as "http://ttp//www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcPtFful8bcTh" so CLICKING on it fails. You may get more hits if you FIX the link.

I've had it now for 2 months, the charger shorted out, and charging it up with a USB cord takes forever and a day, not to mention it's not compatible with many apps, and it takes forever to search the web. I wouldn't give this thing to my worst enemy. IRULU products SUCK. Never again, I don't care if it's free. Heck IRULU should pay you just for wanting to use their crappy devices.patjohn723, I can't agree more.
I stated this post last year. Many companies hav e tried to get into the tablet market this past year some are goo. Many like the iRulu, are a was for time.

Fro most topple, 6 to 8 inch is about right. The real issues are:
  • Reliability
  • Good apps
  • Display brightness
  • Battery life
  • Tech support
The Android OS lets you change font size and does a good job of word-wroap. So even people like me can use a 6 Inch tablet. That is also true of the Apple products.
Here is a recent review that I think is mostly fair.

Solve : Gaming Desktop Retailer Recommendation?

Answer»

Any particular retailer that specializes in gaming desktops that you recommend? I'm aware of new egg, best buy and tiger direct (which is the same as new egg apparently). I'm shooting at a budget somewhere between 1k and 3k.

I've edited your post. PLEASE just ASK the question without the profanity. Thank you.Its been 2 weeks, but f your still checking on this. My one friend swears that Alienware Gaming Rigs are what to go with for out of box ready to go gaming systems. You have a budget large enough to get a good HIGH end gaming rig. As for myself I dont have such a large budget and so in the past I have bought a $549 tower added RAM for $50 and Video Card for $120 putting the build at $719, and since then back in 2004, I throw about $100 a year at it to keep it modern internally. Which comes out to pretty much entirely new guts every 3 years, and this keeps me sort of balanced with the games that I want to play with my hardware not being cutting edge, but meeting the system requirements of the games to play without lag.If you're planning on getting the best bang for your buck, I strongly suggest going with a custom build versus a pre-built machine. I've used tiger direct (in store, not online) to buy the parts for my computer, and if you don't feel comfortable with assembling it yourself, I believe for less than $100 they'll do it for you. Personally, if you have a retailer like tiger direct near by (relatively speaking) then you should definitely check them out. At the very least, you can go there for recommendations on what parts you'd need for your specific price POINT and desired specs.

Solve : Any Recommendations or Reviews of a Good Boot Manager Utility??

Answer»

Hey guys, so I recently got a second SSD for my rig and I instald CentOS Linux on it. I currently have Windows 8.1 on my main SSD and I can dual boot into Win 8.1 and CentOS sucessfully. The only THING, if I want to boot in to CentOs, i have to press f8 and override the main boot option, which is not a serious issue but a bit annoying. So I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good GUI based Boot MANAGER utility that will give me the option ot select which OS I want to boot from? Something like the screenshot below:

Obvisouly rEFInd is one!

Also I have ASUS Sabertooth Z77 motherboard, which UEFI Motherboard if that affects my choices or not. (Is there a built in utility I could use that I don't know about?). No, I do not have a recommendation. But here is a reference tahtdetails some of the most popular boot loaders.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_boot_loaders
Among the best are versions of GRUB. The latest is GRUB GRUB.
Quote

GNU GRUB was developed from a package called the GRAND Unified Bootloader (a play on Grand Unified Theory[5]). It is predominantly used for Unix-like systems. The GNU operating system uses GNU GRUB as its boot loader, as do most Linux distributions. The Solaris operating system has used GRUB as its boot loader on x86 systems, starting with the Solaris 10 1/06 release
.

Many boot loaders are not ready for the UFI standard. Also note that some still NEED a MBR to function. So you have mostly versions of GRUB and the Windows boot loader and a few others conform to the new standards for hard drives.Yeah, I was doing some more research into to it rEFInd supports UEFI and so does EasyBCD, but I seen a lot of peopel having all sorts of issues with Boot Manager Utitlities/Loadeds with UEFI Firmware. I just saw this screen shot of the Windows Boot Manager giving the option to boot to Windows or Ubuntu:

hmm...I think this is for someone who wants to install two different OS on one HDD or SSD. I have both my operating system already installed on seperate SSDs. And my Linux install (CentOS 7) is already doing a Secure (UEFI) boot if I choose to boot from it.

Most of the articles I have seen are like this giving solutions on how to Multi-boot from on hard drive, not multibooting from multiple hard drives.

What I would l to do is to have Windows Boot Manager to prompt me to select which OS(and I guess which disk) to boot from, instead of me having to manually overide the the boot priority (pressing F8 all the time) and selecting which SSD I want to boot to. If Windows Boot manager won't let me do that, is there a tool out there that will let me do this reatively easily with out giving too much headaches about UEFI?I have 2 dual-booty setups and it's quick enough for me to select boot via BIOS...after a week it was automatic to me.As Patio said, if you have two separate disks, install the OS and its default boot manager to each disk individually and then use the motherboard's boot selection menu to pick which drive you want to boot - Saves massive headaches and allows you to totally nuke either drive with no affect on being able to boot the other one.Learning to use the BIOS thing is the easy way.

If you want more work, take a look at the GRUB wiki.

SuperGrubDisk.org/wiki

They suggest using a USB Flash with GRUB installed.

EDIT: The wiki requires a good knowledge of Linux. But the GRUB is compatible with all versions of Windows. The fend product can be very nice and automatic. Just takes a lot of work to set it up.

Solve : An excellent video conversion software (free Nov.24th)?

Answer»

I do not normally suggest computer software unless it is a direct result of a member's quest for something. So this is a first.Today's offering on the site "giveawayoftheday" is featuring a video converter by a company "*SPAM URL*" whose products i use often and can highly recommend . I currently do use their *SPAM URL* Total Media Converter but this today offering is their most current and comprehensive video conversion software that they produce. The reviews have it at 81% satisfaction rating. So for those of you looking for a very good (and easy to use) video conversion program this could be it.
http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/
truenorthThis is another of those *SPAM URL* products which uses the well known open source FFmpeg video converter. This is disguised in the install package and the files in the final program folder. As with all the others, it is in violation of the GPL because it neither acknowledges the use of FFmpeg nor does it include the source as the GPL requires. Also Aieesoft breaks the GPL by seeking to impose its own copyright restrictions on a product whose heart is pirated. Aieesoft has a somewhat bad reputation for shenanigans of this type. If you want to get FFmpeg with a GUI front end, there are plenty of GPL-compliant honest programs such as Handbrake and WinFF. Having said all that, it does actually work, but that it only because FFmpeg is so good.

ST, Very interesting comments. I would have thought that "giveawayof the day" would have been aware of that and considered their offering on it's basis. As i said i do use other of their software and have been extremely pleased with their PERFORMANCE. As I'm sure you know this product as is the case in all others i believe (not only those of *SPAM URL*) have PAID for versions of the same software that are available from their products web site. While I'm not intimately aware of the ins and outs of the software production companies and their "shenanigans" it seems to me that giveawayoftheday and *SPAM URL* itself would be wide open to legal product infringement if they offered propitiatory software of another company. We see evidence of those suits all the time in the media. What i do find fascinating is how my inclusion of the name *SPAM URL* in my original post is now changed to "*SPAM URL*" truenorthGiveaway Of The Day have been giving away Aieesoft products for years. They also give away Easeus, clone2go, and many other products which violate the GPL. The idea is to create publicity and hopefully get people to upgrade to "premium" versions. It is very hard to get such violators to stop. Open source authors do not generally have big cash resources like big commercial software companies do. It seems like Truenorth does not wish to accept what I am saying, but it is true.

There are many reports of GOTD violations, even on their own forums...

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/7351
No! No! ST you misrepresent my thinking. I do NOT say that which you relate is untrue. I only find it bewildering that *SPAM URL* which appears to be a legitimate company offering a multitude of product IE: http://www.*SPAM URL*.com/product-video-w.html
would still be in existence if they offered for sale products known to contain illegal content which they do NOT posses the right to use. It may be but i find it strange. In this case today the product offered is the 1st displayed on their page i have linked and it IS (according to their portrayal) the premium of their line for the function it does. So i don't think their motivation is to offer a lesser product in order to induce you to upgrade to a "premium"product. But if as you say often shenanigans are at play in these offerings i guess only time will tell if that is so in this case. I can only relate as to my personal knowledge (though it certainly has limitations) that my experience so far with their products has been very acceptable and that which they offer has performed as it was stated to do.truenorthSalmon i was unaware that Easus also fell into this shady area of Author's...

As of now i will stop recommending the Product as i have in the past...

Thanx for the heads up...Further to the ST observations re *SPAM URL* and this specific offering. I have just gone to the computer which i did download the aforementioned product today. When i click on the open program (version 6.3.26) and select "about" it clearly indicates that this program is under copyright 2008-2012 by *SPAM URL*. Would not the copyright process require the company to clearly demonstrate that it was an original work and did not infringe on the propitiatory property of someone else? Isn't that a condition of copyright granting?truenorthAnyone can write whatever they like in a copyright notice. It does not necessarily give it legal force. There is no "copyright process" such as you imagine. Copyright is not "granted".

Quote from: Salmon Trout on November 24, 2012, 01:15:11 PM

Anyone can write whatever they like in a copyright notice. It does not necessarily give it legal force. There is no "copyright process" such as you imagine. Copyright is not "granted".

Indeed. Copyright is essentially automatic; the License of a piece of software gives you rights to the software and/or it's accompanying source code. GPL, for example, is called "Copyleft" because it's license actually gives you more freedom than the "default" copyright license that would be attributed if there was no explicit license with the software.

For example, my Programs usually have a Copyright notice on them. Copyright is automatic when you create something; if I write a program, I own the copyright to it. However- just because my about boxes say "Copyright 2008-20012 BASeCamp Corporation" (or whatever) doesn't mean that I followed a copyright "process", nor is it even a guarantee of, well, anything. Even if there was a "copyright process" as you (Truenorth) envisions it, they wouldn't have legal control over what get's put in an about box. A person or company willing to lift GPL code and use it for-profit in their own Applications probably wouldn't have any qualms about circumventing a hypothetical "copyright process" and just putting a copyright notice in the software anyway.

In some ways these violations illustrate one of the bigger problems with GPL, and, to be more specific, copyright; if a piece of GPL'd software is having it's license infringed, who enforces it? Somebody has to pay lawyers and essentially file suit against the infringing party. the FSF does try to be a sort of mitigating force in doing this and making sure Copyleft licenses are not violated, but they can't be everywhere at once; and fact is that in many ways Copyright is something that really only benefits the companies that can afford to prevent infringements of their IP.

I disagree with the GPL, myself, and instead prefer to use a BSD/MIT license in my own programs (the ones that are OSS anyway). But the license chosen by the developer of a piece of software is something that should be respected by other developers, and what these companies are basically doing is stealing code from other developers and outright infringing the license of use that the code is provided under, and trying to make money off of it, while ignoring all the terms of the license. They do this not because they didn't notice. They know exactly what they are doing- they do it because they can turn a profit and they know that the people who's code they are stealing don't have the means to do anything about it.I find the discussion around this thread very intriguing (and also quite enlightening as i am learning more as it evolves). Though not intended to be misleading words i have used do not entirely represent the reality of what the process and/or what the consequences of what copyright is, mean (in the legal sense). Yes all things of creations by an individual (and even then there are some exceptions) are indeed automatic. However in my own pursuit of additional knowledge (beyond that which is generously being provided by other members) seems to indicate that the "process" of copyright protection is greatly enhanced by the registration process. Which is i gather more onerous than just the creation of the largely original work. The registration process seems to hold more weight and adds to the legal validity should the need arise. So i feel that my use of the word granting would be more appropriately associated with the registration process.Because in countries that offer this option there are conditions required before registration is completed. Of course it would be extremely naive of me to deny the existence of fraud in terms of copyright infringement but within the constraints identified by BC i am certain those with the means/knowledge/inclination can and do pursue theft of copyright material. We witness it all the time and i'm sure many a law firm rely heavily on application. By the way i still like and intend to use the *SPAM URL* products i have and i hope their statement re copyright is a valid and true one.truenorthhttp://www.mail-archive.com/[emailprotected]/msg08607.html

The facts here.

1. They are using ffmpeg. ffmpeg falls under GPL. GPL requires that the source code of a product be distributed with it.
2. They do not provide the source code.

They are violating the GPL, there really is no question about it. According to the thread/mailing list I link above, it also uses Qt, but provides no information that it's using it, the use of which is also governed by the GPL. It also steals code from memtest86. (avformat-52.dll) contains resource strings and code from memtest86.

Their x264 codec (marked as "cuda support" by the program) is stolen from VLC.

Quote
i hope their statement re copyright is a valid and true one
It's not. As above: they use various bits of other Open Source projects with the sole purpose of trying to glue them together and make a profit off the work of others.

If you want to confirm that the copyright is not "registered" you can easily search for registered copyrights- they are a public record. Of course, if they had registered the copyright, they would have the copyright registration ID on the about box as well.

So, just to reiterate:

1. The product does use GPL code. There is no question about this, and it's easily confirmed by just looking at the resources and even just by way of the libraries shipped with the product.

2. the GPL license requires you make source available to your customers with the product or to include a written offer. This is not optional, and they do NOT do this. Violation 1. They don't even mention anything about GPL, of which the entire GPL license is supposed to be included withe any product that uses GPL code. Violation 2.

This is not exactly atypical, about 80% of the "Video converters" and "DVD rippers" you can find online do this; they outright steal GPL'd code, ignore the license, paste it into a GUI (almost always made using yet another Open Source product) and then try to pass it of as their own (just LOOK at the EULA for one of their programs- does it mention anything about the GPL? Of course not. Heaven forbid people find out they can download and use a Free Video converter, rather than buy or use this shareware.

THAT IS... by the way, what it is. It's a shareware product. Giveaway of the Day doesn't give away free programs, these things normally cost money. That's Violation 3, since the GPL specifically states that you can only charge, at most, for the cost of distribution media.

Honestly it's worse for the CONSUMERS; looking at their site, they normally charge 35 dollars for this product, which is nothing more than a repackaged Open Source program. The authors of the OSS software don't really lose anything, it's the people who's wallets they are draining that really lose.

Their technique is effective- basically TAKE some Open Source product, make a program around it, and release it at cost. Then, their army of spammer minions spam forums, blogs, etcetera to make sure they are higher on the search results, and unwary victims buy the product.
Thank you for your input BC and ST as well. Lest there be even a modicum of doubt it certainly was NOT my intention when i offered the suggestion i did at the outset of this thread to become a part of "their army of spammer minions". I honestly believed i had found a good program that others might benefit from. I am contemplating contacting the software company in view of my new found knowledge but i assume i would have as much effect as trying to persuade a stick-up artist to find a better calling in life.truenorthThere's nothing wrong with posting links to giveawayoftheday.com's offerings. I do it once in a while when there is a product I think others should know about. You weren't aware of the issue - and even if you were, the software is still available for public download from a legitimate site.

Solve : Computer System?

Answer»

I need information about ONE computer system that is used for high performance workstation for huge satellite image processing for my project proposal. I want to know about the hardware's or software's that can cover this type of system.I use to WORK for a business that was now bought out by Tom Tom.

As far as satellite image processing... I am GUESSING that the images are not your own but that you would be USING Google Earth images etc as for its very very costly to have direct satellite image processing to capture your own as WELL as this type of processing is governed by gov identities who protect ( censor ) imaging of certain areas which are classified, off limits to viewing to public.

To know what hardware/software you need I would need more info on what you are exactly doing.

What satellite image source are you using?

What are you doing with the images in which they would need editing to add info or indexing for a database etc?

Is your end product going to be web based to where you also need to have the hardware and software to offer the services or is this mainly private research in which others contact you to put together a package of an area of interest of which your mainly just gathering and presenting info?

Any other info you can share to explain what your needs are and this project which is very vague in what you want to do?we are just doing a research about types of hardware uses for satellite image processing and there is no propose for the system.
what types of hardware and software are needed to support satellite image processing.
we need to know the requirement about workstationSurely asking us to do it for you defeats the whole point of the project. We aren't here to do homework for you.

Solve : Windows 8 Update Notifier?

Answer» EDIT: The newest version of Windows 8 Update Notifier has more controls then the earlier version I originally posted about in this topic. You can now just check a box to have it run at startup and to install Windows Defender updates.

Windows 8 does not alert users to new Windows Updates like previous versions of Windows. Some people like Windows to "be quiet" and not alert them to updates for various reasons and Microsoft decided to stop the alerts in Win 8. For those of us who do rely on notifications to important Windows Updates this is a good free solution. Patch Tuesday is pretty easy to forget about especially when we have never needed to remember it, until now.

Quote
Windows 8 Update Notifier Homepage

Windows 8 do not offer a desktop notification about new available Windows Updates. You can choose the OPTION "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download them" WITHIN the Windows Update Settings, but you will not be informed about new updates via a popup on the desktop (as it was in windows 7). Only on the logon screen you can see a hint in the bottom right corner.

Windows 8 Update Notifier does not install or run by default at startup so be sure to see the documentation page for install instructions and Screenshots if you prefer to have it running all of the time.

The instructions just tell you to PLACE the WindowsUpdateNotifier.exe in your Startup folder located at:
C:\Users\{User Name}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Simply Cut/Paste or Copy/Paste WindowsUpdateNotifier.exe into the Startup folder.

Once I ran this software I was informed that I had 6 Windows Updates waiting to be DOWNLOADED and installed.
  • If you are using Windows Defender (the default AV in Win 8 ) the notifier will alert usually twice a day. It can be annoying but the good thing is you will always have the most recent AV updates as they are released.
  • Windows 8 Update Notifier is just a notifier. You have to manually open Windows Updates and download/install them.

Solve : Microsoft utility to mount ISO disk image files for Windows XP?

Answer»

If you are still using Windows XP, you may wish you could moist ISO images like in Windows 7 or 8. Some time back MS released a utility that makes it easy for die-hard XP users.

I used it and can say it works good. Saves time and yup don't wast a CD or DVD making a physical copy of the image. And it runs faster than a physical CD.
Here is the link:
http://www.winbeta.org/news/microsoft-releases-free-utility-mount-iso-disk-image-files-windows-xp-vista-and-7
Follow the link to the MS site. You need to have a new folder to unzip the files.
Read the read me file. You have to copy a sys file into the system32\drivers
Give it a try.

Correction: If you are using Windows 7, Windows Vista or are still too stubborn to move from Windows XP, Microsoft has released a tool that lets you mount ISO files like you can on Windows 8. Windows 7 does not have the capability to mount ISOs, that came with Windows 8 - The closest that 7 has is the ability to burn ISOs to disc WITHOUT any extra software.

Microsoft did not release this tool for "die-hard XP users" (although you are clearly saying this so you can hold on to some fake belief that MS still want to support XP), they released it for all Windows versions that it would be compatible with and that will currently still be in use. Did you just read the title, get to the bit where it said "Windows XP" and just stop there rather than also reading the bit that states "Vista, and 7"?MS is late to the party with this utility SINCE there have been 3rd party utilities such as Virtual CloneDrive and daemon Tools available for a long time.I stand corrected.
Another thought. If you have a Windows 8 PC on your network, you can use it to open an ISO image and copy the contents to another PC on the network.

Well maybe they aren't keen to include free software with Windows lest the makers of the similar software throw a fit and file an anti-trust lawsuit. I have used deamon tools , lite version. works great and free tool. it does REQUIRE a reboot after install (not Microsoft PRODUCT)

Solve : Auslogics Disk Defrag Touch?

Answer»

Auslogics has has always been a top developer in my book and they have now stepped up to the plate with Auslogics Disk Defrag Touch. This is designed for touch screen but also works as desktop software for Windows 7 and 8. 100% free.

I don't have a touch screen and it works just like a Windows 8 app. In desktop mode move your MOUSE to the top of the screen to Close the app.

I don't defrag very often. HDD's are much more efficient these days and to me they don't seem to need nearly as much maintenance as they used to. I may not keep it but I enjoyed checking it out.

Sadly not XP COMPATIBLE ... For some reason Windows XP systems with World of Warcraft installed ( around 25GB of game files ) has a 6GB section that is fragmented in red according to the Windows XP Defrag tool, yet multiple attempts to defrag this haven't resolved it.

Fortunately the game operates correctly, but the heavy fragmentation isnt ideal for system/game optimization.

Things I have tried:

1.) Normal Defrag of C: with 45% free space
2.) Move game from C: to external HDD, then defrag C: and fragmentation is gone, reintroduce the game back to C: and fragmentation is back for 6GB of data. The 6GB of data seem to be large files that make up the core of the game files. ( My thought here was that removal of the 25GB WOULD leave a hole behind, and the defrag would smooth over this hole in continuous data, then adding the game back, it should fill into available open blocks and be less fragmented. But this is not the case.)

* I pretty much have lived with this as oh well it is what it is. The good thing is that this is no problem with the systems I have that have SSD's where fragmentation isnt a concern. The original Auslogics works fine on XP...solid app...been using it 5 + years now since i found it.
That is unless your runnin touch screens on XP...Interesting to see someone releasing this. I don't really see how it will last - Laptops with touch have a touchpad that people will likely use more than the touchscreen and tablets without a touchpad will tend to run on SSDs therefore won't require defragmentation.Quote from: evilfantasy on May 23, 2014, 10:54:57 AM

I agree but it will take years and years for SSD to become the norm. Just think how many billions of non-SSD DRIVES have been and are still being produced.

Solve : Universal USB Installer 2014?

This Open Source tool falls under the GNU General Public License Version 2
Source Code is made available at time of download, from the official UUI PAGE:

My recommendation is to use this program to install Linux on a USB drive. It lets you pick the ISO file to use. If you don't have it, it will link to the site for the official Linux ISO needed for the USB flash. (You will need to remember where the download was saved.)
I TRIED it on Puppy Linux and if booted right up whit no problem. I have yet to try thy Ubuntu or many other versions that work with this installer
Booting up a Linux bistro on a Desktop or LAPTOP is quick WAY to see if there is a hardware problem. If Linux can boot it, it must be working.
It will fit on even a small USB flash drive. This is a good tool, and I have used it many times myself, however its unfortunate that if the Linux Distro your trying to install to a USB is not included in the lengthy drop down of distro versions to select from, and you try to use the Other Linux option, I haven't had any luck with getting any Other Linux distros to work with that option.

If you are using a more common Linux Distro to push to USB stick it works very well.

It MAY have been Morphix that gave me problems.

Solve : BluetoothPortable Keyboard for iPhone, Smartphone?

Answer» Recommendation.
Yes, this is a FLEXIBLE Keyboard for iPhone or Smartphone. It connects via Bluetooth.

Best of all, this generic ITEM was very low price. It has a recharge battery that APPARENTLY keeps a charge nfor several hours.
The Bluetooth is easy to set up, but if you power of either the phone or the keyboard, you lose the connection and you have to enter the FOUR DIGIT code again.

Here is a link to a larger picture of the thing on my desk.

The unit is made for the iPhone, so the special keys do not work on other phones.
I really like it!
