Download STIES taht maked it AVAILABLE will OFTEN tempt you with other things you do not really want. Some of which have been even harmfuyll.

Cisco's Network Magic is a software Swiss Army knife for your network. Network Magic's Network Activity and Intruder Tracking are the big blades that slice away your networking confusion and provide information on all connected devices, ... New in version 5.5, Network Magic integrates with Cisco wireless routers and includes Trend Micro's Home Network Defender. And Cisco has also improved the parental controls since version 5.0, added support for 33 languages, and changed the interface's color scheme to blue. ..., the price has dropped $10 to $39.99 (direct).
Myself, I think they ought to offer it for $10 or free with a new router.
To find a free version, start with the Cisco site and see if they have an offer.

EDIT: A rival product is called sSiceworks.

Solve : Comparison Between 2 LAPTOPs?

Answer»

Should I go for Dell Inspiron 15R Intel Core i7/ 4GB/ 1TB/ 15.6" OR
Lenovo Ideapad Z500 Intel Core i5/ 6GB/ 1TB/ 15.6"I would go for the Dell. But that is just me. Depends if you need the power of the i7. The 15R is one of Dell's run-of-the-mill CONSUMER laptops and is available with anything from a Celeron right up to an i7. As a result is is chunky and not super high quality.

The Ideapad on the other hand is a high quality luxury machine so although it doesn't have the same CPU power as the Dell, it is a much higher quality machine in both internal components and build quality.

Given the choice I would always go for the Ideapad over a 15R.As Cameron says - these are entirely different systems aimed at different markets. If you're in the market for an Ideapad, you're not going to look TWICE at the Inspiron - if you're interested in the Inspiron, the Ideapad shouldn't be on your shortlist.I would always go for Lenovo.
Of course they can be EXPENSIVE but I think that their quality is really good.

The recent news of multiple Google Chrome add-ons actually being adware hosts has put the browser in a position to not only spy on users but to be exploited by malware by silent remote updates to the add-ons.

My OCR program is MIA. So I went on-line

This is from a post by Amit Agarwal

1. Google Docs – When you upload an image file or a scanned PDF to Google Docs, CHECK the option that says “Convert text to Google Docs format” and Google Docs will automatically perform OCR on the file before saving it to your account.

2. Abbyy FineReader – FineReader Online is a web-based OCR service that can instantly convert your PDF FILES and images into corresponding office file formats.

3. OnlineOCR.net – Online OCR, as the name suggests, is a cloud based OCR service that can HANDLE all common images formats including scanned PDFs. If you have multiple images that you would like to convert to text in one go, you can put them all in a single zip file and upload it to Online OCR.

Solve : Microsoft has released Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7?

Answer»

You can download Internet Explorer 10 in the language that matches your version of Windows or choose the English version, which works with all versions of Windows 7.

If you need help finding out which version of Windows you're running, see Is my PC running the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows?

Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7Thanks EF From what I've seen of IE 10 in Windows 8 on the notebook PC I bought Feb. 21, I think it has a good chance of stopping, and perhaps REVERSING, the diminishing of IE's market share. Not to get into a browser debate, but is she fast like google chrome? I remember 8 being painfully slow.I haven't tried it on WIN 7 yet but on my Win 8 it loads kinda slow. After that though it performs well. If you use MSN as a homepage or for news, sports, tech articles etc you will like it. The tiles are kind of cool.downloaded it, IE 10 for win 7 x64 runs pretty fast (I am have 2gb of ram) But for some reason the UI reminds me chromeThis is great. Will try this one. Thank you for sharing! You need to remove the Ad from your sig.As a somewhat related TANGENT, anybody hear about that "CrashIE.com" website?

Well, apparently, it causes IE to hang. It claims this is the Javascript that causes the hang:

Code: [Select]for(x in document.write){document.write(x);}

Now, in my test, this allegedly caused IE8 to "hang"; what I FOUND odd was that, when I transplanted the alleged Javascript to a separate page, I did not encounter the script problem. So, I decided to see what it was actually doing.

It appears that CrashIE actually sends an infinite LOOP JS script to any browser that identifies as IE:
Code: [Select]for(;;)setInterval("void(0)",0)

If it finds MSIE in the browserAgent, the server sends that Javascript back. It's an infinite loop and will cause any browser to hang temporarily (at least). As you might expect, putting MSIE in the browseragent of another browser happens to cause this as well. I thought it was interesting because it's trying to be intentionally misleading.Quote from: patio on April 04, 2013, 07:17:58 PM

You're completely correct on the second part, I just checked it on Chrome and it completely failed to load when I used a fake IE10 browser agent.Didn't crash FFox...but locked it up for approx 1 minute.

Small Basic.
Specifically, the version now offered by Microsoft. It is so much easier to learn than Visual Studio and its various flavors. It is simple, clean and follows modern ideas about object programming.
It is a very good starting point for anyone wanting to know more about how computers work. An it can do some rather cool things with a little effort.

Thanks though to Geek-9pm for the post.
I have always been curious as to how I might find out about programming.

I would really LOVE to be able to SET up a program for my own game that I have been thinking of for many years. MAYBE this will be the start of it. Maybe I can clone my own version of Space Invaders? hahahaha.

An interesting fact I found out some time ago, is that when starting a career in I.T., what ever the pupil learned in the first year of study, had been outdated by the THIRD year.

So never too late to have a go.

Thanks Geek-9pm. You are welcome.
Only a small group of people take interest in Small Basic. But that can be siad for a lot of tings. Apparently there are thousands of Small Basic users out there .
A Bing search on 'small basic games' gets a lot of hits.

Solve : List of Defrag Software - Free!?

Answer»

List of Defrag Software - Free!
If you find the built-int Windows def rag lacks performance., try none nof these and see if it makes a difference. All of the items below are for Windows. Most should work on Windows 7 64 bit. (All did for me.)

1. Defraggler.
The freeware supports NTFS and FAT32 file systems.
http://www.filehippo.com/download_defraggler

2. Auslogics Disk Defrag
Another freeware compact and fast defragmentation software
http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download/

3. Smart Def
You may find Smart Defrag is a free disc defrag tool worth investigating.
http://majorgeeks.com/IObit_SmartDefrag_d5318.html

4. Puran Defrag Free
This freebie has intelligent directory optimization
http://www.puransoftware.com/Puran-Defrag-Download.html

Let others know which you like best. Or recommend another.
I miss the original Defrag that showed the blocks shuffling. The modern defrag built into windows is boring, but I suppose one reason for this may be because drives and computers have increased in speed so greatly that the screen would be flashing wild with segments of data shuffled and this might be overwhelming to the viewer ( the display from the movie wargames with all the flashing comes to mind ) and Microsoft wants something that looks smooth and not something that displays rampantly wild changes that flash by.

I haven't tried anything other than the defrag built into windows, mainly due to fear of CORRUPTING a file system, but I suppose this may be simple paranoia since anything that would corrupt a file system would have plenty of warnings on google to avoid if it had issues.

Thanks for linking these, I will try them out with my spare system sandbox that I build and rebuild frequently when testing.

*The only issue I have seen with the defrag that comes with Windows is the one that comes with Windows XP and some large files that show as fragmented, but the defrag skips because it is unable to defrag them. These files are part of World of Warcraft install that are around 1.4GB in size each. and I think there was like 6 files like this that could not be defragmented. On a 40GB hard drive when you have around 9GB fragmented of the 40GB, it can not be a good thing with 22.5% fragmentation. I suggested to my friend to upgrade to a 160GB drive in which the fragmentation % would be less based on increased volume offset between the 9GB and 160GB capacity, which if the data remained fragmented it would only be around 5.625% fragmentation instead..I use and recommend Auslogics...I was always wondering why there are no defrag tools that are as optimal as possible by booting into a live linux mode to run the defrag tool from CD or DVD direct to RAM and able to shuffle the fragmented data blocks on a hard drive without having to work around swap space of when windows is active. To me it just seems as though this process would be more efficient and as defragmented as possible when nothing needs to use the hard drive and its idle awaiting the defrag vs having windows reading/writing data on the swap space during the process of ridding the drive of fragmentation. Unless the swap function is written as such to operate at the opposite end of the hard drive such as outter platter vs inner platter to where the data in the drive that composes swap data does not conflict with static data that needs to fit better to remove fragments. Or swap space is disabled during this process to only use system RAM and avoid writing of temporary data to an area where long term data should be stored.

At least someday with SSD's eventually replacing all HDD's fragmentation may be a thing of the past.Quote

At least someday with SSD's eventually replacing all HDD's fragmentation may be a thing of the past.

Don't bet on it. With very large data STRUCTURES and weak tools, fragmentation will continue to be with us. Digital data is growing faster that software tools needed to handle it. The remedy is to use optical FIBER for everything. Except maybe the mouse.

Meanwhile, the tools is the list alcove are way ahead of the Windows defrag. Also, there are optimizations specific to windows.

Maybe so, but an SSD is MUCH less susceptible (if at all) from a noticeable slowdown due to fragmentation.
I think you missed my point.
Even in RAM fragmentation is a problem.
One may have, will have , data of different types in n RAM, During a process, some of the data is no longer needed., so its space is RELEASED to the general pool. Ideally any data array should be contiguous to reduce the need for porters to every little bit do data. This happens with strings, of course, but dynamic data types, sometimes used in modern programs, will hack the memory pool into little bits and pieces. It creates an overheard that reduces CPU performance. In a general way, this is also what happens to the hard drive. The workaround is to use huge blocks of data to avoid fragmentation. But that reduces usable space.
In a big IT data warehouse, daily de- fragmentation of some kind is needed for data that is always changing. But for us home users, daily de- fragmentation is overkill.

Yes, a faster drive is better that a slow one, given the same conditions. Speed helps. Yet a fast drive that is fragmented may not be better than a slow continuous drive structure. De fragmentation does help.Quote
Maybe so, but an SSD is MUCH less susceptible (if at all) from a noticeable slowdown due to fragmentation.

Fragmentation may STILL be present, but at this time I feel sort of the same as TechnoGeek, mainly because SSD's have no moving parts and data could be extremely scattered and fragmented between the data blocks, and as long as its properly indexed it should be able to read the data at around the the same rate, however I could expect to see a unnoticable with current hardware slow down on the writing to an SSD when its trying to fit the data best to the already existing data structure, and the more segments = the slower the write process. And with less gaps and more continuous writing the delays are reduced to a minimum.

I agree with you Geek-9pm that daily defragmentation is overkill for most home users. However if you are creating and deleting large amounts of data with video editing or anything else that works with large portions of data, you may find that you have to defrag almost daily, although for Windows 7 it has done really well keeping itself free of fragmentation issues even when working with creation/deletion of large files. Windows XP use to be a constant weekly routine to defrag with lots of data created and deleted.

Solve : My Review Rackspace Hosted Exchange?

Answer»

Here is review of Rackspace Hosted Exchange. Originally posted on my blog (Link in the Signature), but figured I would share here as well.
Quote

I had heard of Rackspace for years before running across a reason to try them out. So when the chance came I went for it and here's my story.

One day while sitting in a meeting with the “big guys”, I was pitching the idea of moving the entire companies email to a hosted Cloud environment. Our 2003 in-house Exchange system crashed. This crash wasn’t really uncommon just very convenient since it happened while I was telling everyone how bad it was. I inherited the system from my predecessors and it was bad from the beginning. The database corrupted itself once a week. The backup system wouldn’t complete which caused the logs not to clear. In return that would fill up the storage. This was a constant pain. So needless to say by the end of the day, my project idea was approved.

So I set out on the very tedious task of filtering through the plethora of Cloud based hosted Exchange solutions. I looked into about 50 of them and over about a month narrowed my choices to 5 finalist. The finalist were Office 365, PacHosting, Kerio, 1and1 and of course Rackspace. I know; I make it sound like a competition. Actually it was. You see for me to put my reputation on it I would need to be 100% confident. I looked into cost, reputation, features and of course storage. Rackspace won me over and signed up.

So I started the migration and Rackspace was great about it. They assigned a transition team to handle the migration for me. This was at no ADDITIONAL charge and they took care of almost everything. Now the migration took forever to do once it was started. Now I only tell you this in the effort of being completely honest. The reason it took forever was due to our poor database and the horrible T-1 connections we had at the time. Rackspace did a great job of watching the migration which started on Friday and lasted through the weekend. After a few forgotten password resets by noon on Monday morning the project was done.

Our service has some really cool features as well.

Outlook Web Access: Complete online email access. I love web mail access! It has all the same features as Outlook including tasks, calendar, reminders and shared features.
Office Outlook: Desktop access for some users is a must. Which isn’t a problem because Office Outlook 2010 is available at no extra charge to the users. Each user can login and download it along with a utility to setup their account for them.
Spam Filtering: Spam filtering is done using three layers filtration. Its like drinking WATER that is 99.999% percent clean, accept your reading email. (Yes I made up that stat.)
Hybrid Option: If you don’t need full Exchange email accounts, then you can use a cross between Exchange and Rackspace’s cloud based email system. An design option we actually use. We use the Rackspace emails (which are cheaper) for a few system email accounts, copier email accounts and for employees who don’t actually need an email account for company use, but need one to see their paycheck stubs. This option actually saves us a good amount of money on our monthly bill.
Directory SYNC: Password synchronization to keep the company’s on-premise Active Directory synchronized with Rackspace Hosted Exchange.
Mobile Access: Allows users mobile device access to their emails on the go. What I like about this service is the control I have. Not just any user has mobile access, but only the users I give permission to.
Control Panel: The control panel for the entire system is very easy to use and I can set my staff at different admin levels for management.
This does not include every feature they offer, just a few that I love. I didn’t even get into the archiving feature which is awesome. I highly recommend Rackspace for Hosted Exchange! We also use SharePoint and Cloud Server products.

To checkout Rackspace yourself go to http://www.rackspace.com/email-hosting/hosted-exchange/

NOTE: I am just a customer of Rackspace, I get no compensation for this review. Of course if you work for Rackspace and want to send me a check or some SWAG for my review I will be happy to accept it.
Side note. After I posted this review, Rackspace found it and showered me with S.W.A.G.
I am still just a customer, but a complete sucker for free t-shirts! They never did send me a check tho!Cool that this worked out for you. I was trying to sell this idea to the big wigs when I was in IT at my prior job. Their concern was data security, and even though its secure, they wanted to keep the exchange server local to have control on sensitive data so that there is no thought in the back of their mind that any leaks would happen.

Good to see that you were able to sell them on it. We had problems with exchange, especially back in the Exchange 5.5 days which I dont miss at all. When I left this position in 2009 they were running on Exchange 2003, and it was around then that I was trying to sell them on this idea of offsite servers for our Mail Exchange since they did not want to allocate proper funds for the IT budget.

When it came to IT, they said they wanted this and wanted that, and then oh by the way we dont want to spend money to make this happen, so other than software licensing that they were not able to weasel their way around and would painfully sign approval for purchase of, generally I was having to take normal off the shelf cheap computers that were not intended for critical server applications and make them into the needed server or even worse, take Bob's old Pentium III 850Mhz workstation with 512MB RAM that he use to use for making the store flyers with Photoshop etc, and use that for the server instead because we cant approve $700 for at the time a Core 2 Duo tower to make a better home computer grade, non-server hardware class server. And you have to use the prior Server 2000 OS from the prior server instead of Server 2003 because we need to keep costs down, yet they had sales of over 23 million and were in the black by about $700,000 above operating costs.

Then when the server crashes or lags they blame IT and not their poor choices to not get the right equipment and up to date software/OS.... I got tired of this issue and inadequate pay and found a far better job. But I am sure others out there are still stuck in jobs/careers in IT or as the role of IT in other duties as assigned to their normal title, where the businesses find the cost of IT as an inconvenience and trying to get the money to run it as it should be run is like pulling teeth and your not getting paid as good as a dentist.Quote from: DaveLembke on November 08, 2013, 01:28:05 PM

That would be my last job before this company. Server 2000 with no money to upgrade. Just bandaiding all the time. My current company is great. For the most part if I ask for the money they approve it. Just finished up a complete VMware virtualization of all of our servers including a week long Fast track course and they sent me to VMworld 2013. I just tell everyone now, if your job sucks; quit! There are some great companies out there.

Solve : Chkflash - tool for testing USB drives?

Answer»

First off, link - http://mikelab.kiev.ua/index_en.php?page=PROGRAMS/chkflsh_en
It's a tiny program that requires no installation. You can use it to test any USB drive, whether that's a flash drive, SD card or USB HDD. There are SEVERAL different options or tests that can be run, but the primary purpose is to write data to the device, then read it back and check for any errors. This can be useful not only to diagnose a failing drive, but to test if your flash drive is the correct capacity - there are fake drives circulating, that report a capacity of say 64GB but in reality are only 2GB and thus anything written over 2GB gets corrupted.
Chkflash will also report read and write SPEEDS, and although there are better programs for this purpose (Atto, crystaldiskmark, HDTune to name a few depending on the drive and what you need to know) it's a nice feature to have as it just reports the speeds alongside the current operation. Right now I'm testing a 32GB USB3 drive I PICKED up, it's been running for 10 minutes, current speed 11.45MB/s, 33 minutes till the end of the test. That's just a write test - after this, I'll use the program to verify the written data and make sure it's all OK. The option is there to run one complete pass, one cycle, a specified number of cycles, or until an error is detected (possibly useful for write endurance tests).

There are other programs that do the same thing, I just wanted to make a RECOMMENDATION for this one as it's so tiny, yet does everything those others do. It's not something everyone will have a sue for, but it's worth keeping on one side just in case.

A word of warning - writing to the entire drive will obviously DESTROY any data on the drive. It's intended for use with a blank drive to avoid data loss, so ensure the drive is either blank, or you don't care about the data currently on it.I can definitely endorse this - I have been using this excellent application for some years, ever since I had a suspect Compact Flash card.

Solve : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Mobile has been released!?

Answer»

I haven't installed this yet. I'll give it a few weeks to see what bugs, if any, are reported. I'm a strong believer in a mobile antivirus being just an antivirus. Most of them have so many features that have nothing to do with MALWARE I refuse to advise their use. I have been happy to use Dr.Web Anti-virus Light and HONESTLY don't plan on switching. Since Malwarebytes is just FOCUSED on malware and if it proves to be stable it will be on my very short LIST of mobile AV recommendations.

Solve : Free Android cross platform texting app?

Answer»

I have been looking into 3rd party text apps that I could use on my tablet. My tablet has no data plan but I often want to text with my mobile phone number from my tablet. I have been using Viber for a few weeks and it works well for the most part but does have a few things that I find annoying. Mainly that everyone you text has to also have Viber installed and that it's a social app.

Quote

Viber - Texting, calling, photo messages and location-sharing with Viber users, anywhere!

* No registration, alias or invitations required
* INSTANTLY integrates with your own contact list
* Best-quality mobile calls using 3G or Wi-Fi
* Calls use your data plan
* Works on multiple platforms from Windows, iOS to mobile

I just discovered Mighty Text and have completely removed Viber from my devices and computer. Mighty Text is what I was looking for to begin with. A texting app, not a social app, that I can use with my tablet from my mobile phone number. It even has browser texting in the form of web text. The only limitation is you need to install the app on your mobile phone for the others (web text, tablet text) to work because Mighty Text needs access to your contacts in your Google profile.

Quote
Mighty Text - Text From Any Device

Send & receive SMS and MMS from your computer or tablet, using your current Android phone number. Messages stay in sync with your phone's SMS inbox.

* PowerView - Built for the text-obsessed. Carry on multiple conversations simultaneously in the web app and the tablet app.
* Text Directly From Gmail - SMS directly from Gmail on your computer. Just like a Google chat/hangout window.
* Phone Battery Alerts - WHEREVER your phone is, know exactly how much battery life it has LEFT from your Web App or tablet app.
* Edit Photos With Filters - Edit photos directly from the web app by adding Instagram-like filters, frames, stickers, doodle & more.
* Call Notifications - GET notified on your computer or tablet when someone calls your Android phone.
* Safe & Secure - Get peace of mind knowing that all your information is safe and secure.
* Texts use your data plan

There are separate apps for phones and tablets.
Text Messaging from Tablet SMS
SMS Text Messaging ↔ PC Texting

Solve : Thinkbroadband ping monitor?

Answer»

Link - http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping
(Requires you to sign up for a free account to use the service)

This is a little different to most product reviews and recommendations, in that it's not really a product but a service, provided by thinkbroadband.com. I don't know how well I'm going to explain this so I would recommend reading through the info on their site, but I'll give this a go.

Basically, what this service does is ping your IP every second, and store the results - minimum latency, average latency, maximum latency, and packet loss. Doesn't sound too useful on the face of it. However, put those results onto a graph - and not just any graph, a nicely coloured one! - and you have something potentially very useful. You can see how your connection changes over time, for example if your ISP implements traffic management at peak times, or when you're downloading a lot of data you can see how that affects your latency. So, how is that useful? Well, if you seem to always have problems playing online games, you can use this to determine if your connection is always bad, or if it goes bad at certain times. If you're experiencing problems with VOIP such as Skype, perhaps your issue is high packet loss - this shouldn't happen, but if it does, the graph will show this, and give you some information so you can speak to your ISP and resolve the issue. If your connection seems much slower than it should be, well, this doesn't show your bandwidth but if your latency is consistently high, this could indicate either a congested link to your ISP, or an issue on the line. Also, because ping packets are tiny, there's nothing to worry about in terms of bandwidth usage - they quote around 70MB a month. If your IP changes, you will need to update your profile to keep the graph alive and accurate.

For an example of what the graph looks like, click here - that's a static graph of my connection over the last 24 hours. Their FAQ section will explain in great detail how to interpret your graph, and I'm still getting used to this so I'm admittedly not the most knowledgeable, but I'll attempt to explain what this shows. I have a fairly thin green section, which doesn't spike, so I have a nice steady minimum ping, which is a good thing. The blue section also remains fairly steady, so my average latency mostly remains low, also good. You can see between 6pm and 10pm the yellow section has a general UPWARDS trend, this could be due to me downloading a lot, or it could be traffic management in place. I know I was making fairly heavy use of my connection around those times, so this is expected. The fairly random yellow spikes are also nothing to worry about, they're a peculiarity of some routers and connections. I have no red line at the top, so no packet loss, which is great. So, in short, this shows a fairly healthy connection with no issues with high latency, packet loss, or traffic shaping - hurrah!

I probably haven't explained this all too well, but hopefully this will inspire a few of you to head over to the site and check it out. There's nothing to lose by setting it up, and once done you don't have to worry about a thing, it'll keep the graph updated and keep it online for you to view at any time, so you can look BACK over past days or weeks to see any changes to your connection. Again, this is on of those tools that you may never need, but is potentially a very useful source of information (and something cool to look at).Sounds like an awesome tool I am sure people will find it useful. Thanks, I certainly hope so!
I've never come across anything similar to it so I wanted to share it with the community.Interesting... going to check this out and register with one of my alias junk e-mail accounts to avoid spam flooding my regular e-mail.

A few years ago, I was assisted here at CH with a way to log my PING output to CSV with MIN, MAX, Average. I have used this a bunch of times to graph my networks with excel graphs.

Recorded some interesting latency spikes as well as can see how my latency rises from minimum of 30ms to around 60ms through Comcast at around 9:30am each day and it doesnt drop back to 30ms until after around 10:30pm. The large latency spikes through Comcast are also in a pattern such as a large spike that always happens before the transition from 60ms to 30ms when people are shutting off their computers and are going to sleep. Not quite sure why every night there is that spike at this transition period when the connection to my ISP all of a sudden gets fewer requests for internet traffic and a sudden drop in packet volume.

One website that I was monitoring and trying to find a solution for was www.yahoo.com. If I ping it I get very bad latency. I was hoping that I would be able to ping it a few times and find all the alternate IP's they use for their domain points of presence and find one that was nice and quick among the many that are crap, and then be able to just make a hosts file entry to point directly to this IP in relation to www.yahoo.com and skip the random point of presence connection that I get from the DNS. But they are all crappy 100 to 1000 ms and sometimes request too long etc. Yet I ping www.google.com and I am getting nice and strong responses of less than 80ms and mostly 30-50ms.
Here is data I collected with my batch file that pinged and collected 1 minute log samples to a CSV file.

The rise in average latency (educated assumption is customers waking up and giving comcasts infrastructure exercise until most go to sleep.) The interval values are in minutes for each sample collected and colors are given for MIN,MAX, and Average.

I've had no spam from them, they're a respected website and have little to gain from doing so. I've received exactly two emails - one with a link to activate my account, the second confirming my registration.

The service they provide is pretty much identical to what you've set up, the advantage is theirs would be easier for a less advanced user, and that because the ping is coming from their end and not yours, it doesn't matter if you shut your PC down, as long as the modem remains online. Of course, the flipside is that yours will work even if your IP changes, so there are good and bad sides to both.

Solve : Helium - App Sync and Backup (Android, No Root)?

Answer»

I have been having a few issues with my Samsung GALAXY Note 10.1 the last few days and was hoping to find a NON-Root way to backup my non-Google and non-default app data. I wasn't hopeful. Backups with Android can be deceiving. When you see 'Backup' what actually gets backed up is just the .apk file which is what you download from the Google Play Store. That doesn't do much good for all of the hard work you have put into advancing to high levels in Angry Birds, Fragger, Greedy Spiders #1 and #2 or whatever your favorite games are. I know Titanium does this but it requires root access and I don't care to root my device just to get a backup if I can avoid it.

A little SEARCHING and I soon found a few different non-root app backups that include the data within the apps. Most are not free and I didn't really like them anyway. Until I found Helium - App Sync and Backup. Helium is free and allows you to backup your non-default apps and the app data! You can also CHOOSE to save some space and just backup the app data. Just read through the instructions and you should have a reliable backup started in no time at all. You do have to install a desktop app if you are not rooted and it takes a few more steps without root but is simple and you are walked through the process with on-screen prompts. A true app data backup without root access!

Quote

All Android users can use Helium to backup and sync Android applications.

Helium lets you backup your apps and data to your SD card or cloud STORAGE. With Helium, you can sync app data from your other Android devices-- even if they are not on the same network. Set up backup schedules with Helium, and never lose data again.

Helium also gas a premium version for $4.99 that includes a few more useful features like restoring from Google Drive and other cloud services. You can back up to Google Drive with the free version but not restore from Google Drive. $4.99 falls into my "maximum amount I will pay for an app" mindset so I'll probably be paying for that once the 'Automatic Backup schedules' is added. We all know keeping backups on the same drive/device you are backing up is kind of pointless. As long as I don't somehow accidentally format my SD Card I should be fine, for now anyway.

Quote
Helium Premium Features:

No Ads
Android to Android app sync
Automatic Backup schedules (coming soon!)
Cloud backup and restore
* Dropbox
* Box
* Google Drive

P.S. Be sure to remove the USB cord from the computer/tablet/phone before starting your backup or you will get an ERROR with no explanation as to what HAPPENED.

Solve : PNY 64GB flash drive $17.93?

Answer»

I too have a pile of flash drives from 64MB all the way to 32GB in size as gathered through the last 10 years. I have since put most of them in a upside down DVD Spindle cover that became a good table top bucket for them, and my pens, and random screws and jumpers etc.

One feature I miss that they have done away with in all the modern ones I have seen is the LED to glow and show if its powered or not as well as the blink when its being used. I had one the one day that is a newer type without LED and it was connected and then I went to transfer a file and it wasnt there, nothing to look at on the device to see if its mounted anymore but the computer itself under my computer in Windows etc. In the end I found out that a small fuzz ball had made its way into the plug and was causing an intermittent connection. In which this new flash drive which also is 99% plastic vs the metal outer USB port also came with no cover so as it shifts around in my pocket, lint gathered in the USB 2.0 slot of it.

Now I check them and blow them out like you had to do with the NES game cartridges before each use if they dont have covers. *Someone needs to market USB covers that fit all USB 1.1 and 2.0 device male plugs. I only buy them with LED indicators & retractable covers.Yeah, the Magnum is ANOTHER top contender in the reviews I linked to, but is beaten by the Sandisk. I agree the pricing for the 64GB versions is high, but worth it if you need that speed. I'm planning on picking up the 32GB as it seems better value for money.
I just have a USB2 combo card READER that does everything - I transfer, at most, a few hundred MB of pictures off my camera's SD card once every few months and it's fast enough for that. Plus, I won't have front USB3 ports, so a USB3 reader would require me leaning over the top to plug it in, which makes me sound very lazy (not far from the truth) but there you have it. I can see the advantage if you have a higher end camera, maybe one that shoots in RAW so the files are pretty large, and you have a lot to transfer, and $10 is pretty reasonable.Quote from: DaveLembke on September 18, 2013, 05:14:55 PM

Now I check them and blow them out like you had to do with the NES game cartridges before each use if they don't have covers.

"Blowing" on cartridge GAMES ruins them. The moisture in your breath both condenses onto the colder metal contacts and corrodes them over time. In some cases the moisture is enough to make a electrical connection with the other component and so seems to be "fixing" the problem. But the moisture sticks around and eventually corrodes the metals it comes in contact with. Some people I knew followed a predictable pattern. Their game would stop working and they would keep blowing on it and that would make it work, then one day it would stop working and they would use rubbing alcohol to clean the contacts. What they didn't realize is that they were actually not cleaning off "gunk" they were cleaning off the oxidized metal. Eventually some of their games became completely unusable because the traces literally had been completely cleaned off by the pattern of blow->corrode->remove->repeat.

There are many cases on nesdev and other sites where somebody's game has become unusable through corrosion and the only thing every single one of them had in common was that they frequently blew on the cartridge to "clean" them.

Worse still, with the American Toaster NES, most connection problems were due to the 72--pin connector. When you pushed down on the cartridge it pressed against the pins. Over time metal fatigue would prevent the pins from going back to their original position, and games would stop working. People would then press down harder on the cartridge, bending the pins further. Eventually all Toaster NES's 72-pin connectors become completely unusable as a result. Thing is, people would blow on their cartridges, thinking it was the cartridge causing the problem, and not the idiotic design of the Toaster NES. (Get a top loader and watch as all your games magically work on the first try).

Blowing on a USB connector would probably have the same effect over time. It will also have the benefit of corroding your ports as well, but I imagine people might replace there systems and peripherals frequently enough for this to not matter.

No, i read it on another forum, but to me, it doesn't quite make sense as there are 4 hold down hooks in the motherboard. My heatsink uses 2 and there are 2 free. Looks like a different heatsink design may be used. Would the PC know what was used AUTOMATICALLY?? I've never seen anything in BIOS to change which heatsink type is used........thought you guys might know. I was just curious as i have never read that or come across it before...so i don't know if it's balderdash or not.

As to your issue See Here...

Their thermal pastes are considered some of the best so i would think their adhesives are probably just as good...

That's odd....It WORKS for my 3 computers. Before, just after install, I could drag & DROP taskbar buttons and if I held down a HOTKEY I could do the same with Notification Area icons. After I rebooted for an unconnected reason, I can move them, but when I drop them, they spring back to their original positions as if attached with elastic.

I have XP Pro with SP3 installed.

I usually wind up uninstalling these things after a few days anyway.

Works well here on 2K, XP, and Vista.I used it once for several weeks with no issues, fantastic program.
It then decided to cause major issues which meant that only around 1 in 5 boots was successful. Uninstalled it and all has been well since, but I won't be taking it back.

Solve : 18 Features Windows Should Have (but Doesn't)?

Answer» Some of the coolest OS features are nowhere to be found in Windows XP or VISTA. Here are 18 brilliant features that Microsoft should beg for, borrow, or steal--plus tips on how you can ADD many of them to your PC now.

Love it or hate it, Microsoft Windows is the world's most dominant operating system. But when you look at some of the hot features found in competitors such as Linux and Mac OS X, both XP and Vista can seem a little incomplete.

From intuitive interface features like Apple's application dock and Cover Flow to basic media capabilities such as ISO burning, Windows often falls short on built-in goodies. And some features that other operating SYSTEMS offer by default-- such as 64-bit processing and business-networking tools--require a premium-version license in Windows.

We took a good look at a variety of OSs, from the Mac to Linux to PC-BSD and beyond, and we rounded up a list of our favorite features--few of which come standard in any version of Windows. We even considered some operating systems of yore, and recalled a couple of cool features that Microsoft still hasn't caught on to. Some of these features simply aren't available for Windows at all, owing to the way the OS is designed. But you can add most of them to XP or Vista with the help of third-party applications, and we'll show you how to get them.

1. Expose

Available on: Mac

It's an elegantly simple IDEA, and it has been available on the Mac since 2003. When you want a clear view of all the application windows that are open at any one time, you just press F3, and a ittle feature called Expose arranges them all as thumbnails spread neatly across your screen. Click one, and it pops to the front while the rest snap back into position BEHIND it.

With the release of Windows Vista, Microsoft deployed a feature called Flip3D that attempts to simplify window management in a slightly different way. Flip3D lets users flip through three-dimensional renderings of whatever windows are open on the desktop, but it doesn't offer nearly the same instantaneous visibility that Expose does.

Fortunately, a few downloads can add Expose-like thumbnails to your Windows machine. One little tool called iEx for Windows does the trick for free; but the installation is a little awkward, as you have to drag the downloaded files into the correct folders on your PC. A more refined program, TopDesk, installs automatically in XP and Vista--but it will set you back $20 after the 14-day free trial.

More: http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,145118/article.html?tk=nl_cxanwsokay, I can see how a few of those features would help windows a little. but the story is obviously written by a mac fanboy trying to say how much better mac is than windows. he disguises it a little by mentioning linux a few times, but you can see right through it. about half of his "recommendations" are just dumb.

Solve : aMSN 0.97 (beta) (MSN Messenger/Windows Live Messenger clone)?

Answer»

A nice little alternative to MSN Messenger (Windows Live Messenger).

Available from: http://www.amsn-project.net/
Available for: Linux, Windows, OS X, and FreeBSD. Source also available.

Download: 7.6MB

Installation: 24MB
Took about 10 seconds to install.

No ads, slightly smaller than MSN/WLM (24MB vs. 30MB), multiple account logging, tabbed message window (ONE window for all conversations), webcam support. I've been using it for a long time with no problems.

The only negative things I have found with it:
Sometimes it won't LOG in on the first try (or the second), but MSN/WLM does that sometimes too.
No voice support (yet).

Note: This is beta software. Some users may experience issues in RUNNING this software.

Great APPLICATION!!

Moves files really fast, EXTREMELY easy to use (simply open application to defrag) and it comes with a screensaver that DEFRAGS your computer while the screensaver is running. I'm happy with it.

Download it here.I use it, too.Does it use the same efficient techniques as windows defrag? Can it also defrag other partitions? Thanks for the info, will check it out...It's better, then Windows defrag.Quote from: pcsourcepoint on January 15, 2008, 06:31:54 PM

Sorry for the bump, I just found it somewhat funny that the WORD "efficient" and "windows" could appear in the same sentence, REGARDLESS of context.

Solve : ObjectDock?

Answer» HERE

Jealous of that slick Mac interface? Check out ObjectDock, a free utility that replaces the Windows Taskbar with a colorful, animated dock similar to the taskbar in Mac OS X.

ObjectDock displays icons for currently running applications and can hold quick-launch icons for your favorite programs. As you pass the cursor over each icon, ObjectDock magnifies it and displays relevant information, helping you FIND what you need even when you're running several programs at once. An attractive clock rounds out the toolbar. The tiny utility comes with a dozen attractive SKINS, and users with slow computers can reduce the animation quality to increase speed.

There is one major drawback: the lack of a system tray. There is a free, imperfect docklet plug-in available from a third-party provider that valiantly tries to remedy the problem, although it's a bit buggy. You can also upgrade to the PLUS edition for $20, which includes system tray SUPPORT, tabbed docks, support for multiple docks and multiple monitors, and other features.

If you're dissatisfied with the Windows Taskbar or just want to spice up your Desktop, ObjectDock makes a very good, no-risk choice.

I don't understand this...Doesn't the speed depend on your Internet connection?

Many users seem to find previous versions of Firefox slow to load compared with some other browsers. This partly depends on how many extensions you have enabled. You can even get a Firefox Preloader which runs at system STARTUP and loads certain parts of Firefox in memory so that the user has less time to wait when they first run the browser. Allegedly Firefox 3 is a big IMPROVEMENT in this area. Oh right, I thought you meant the browsing was 2 times faster. The time taken for Firefox load is indeed related to how many add-ons you have.

I haven't tried Firefox 3 yet, how the memory usage?Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on May 23, 2008, 01:55:01 AM

Solve : Forum Additive?

Answer»

Just ran across and installed this. It works here. Looks useful....

https://addons.mozilla.org/it/firefox/addon/4667

Quote

With Forum Additive you can monitor a lot of threads of different forums.
When one or more thread/s has a new replie/s you will be noticed of this WHIT a popup and/or sound and/or status bar notification.

Now Forum Additive work good with this forums:
> vBulletin
> SMF
> phpBB and phpBB XS mod
> Invision Board
> Forum Free
> punBB

Sounds promising, i'll give it a try

Edit: For some reason, I can't configure it...Once installed, if you want a shortcut to it right click an empty area of the address bar and choose customize then drag and drop the FA shortcut there.

If you open FA you can select Edit > Configure for the settings.

To watch a thread right click the thread title and MAKE your selection. Quote

It look/ss like whoever wrote that/this summary had/s a thing for slash/es. They used half of them WRONG..... Lol, I believe he used a translator and some of the characters didn't format correctly. Or it is an odd writing style...Looks like a great tool, assuming it's not abusing the servers it's looking at. Would hope it's just checking RSS feeds related to the posts and not querying the pages being looked at every few minutes for updated posts. It seems to give instant notification. I will get the Forum Additive notification before the email from being subscribed to the posts.

If it is a problem let me know - delete this post - and I will stop using it I'm sure it wont be an issue. Seems like a well-written add-on and I added it but I can't restart Firefox yet so haven't really got to play with it. As long as it's not querying the server every few seconds it wouldn't be that much different then you visiting the site and checking for updated posts.

Pretty impressive THOUGH that you're getting notifications in the program before your e-mails.

Cool!

Yep, when I hit the Post button from this post it will pop right up. Comes in handy for WATCHING threads across the net without being subscribed to them Finally restarted my Firefox and was able to play around with this add-on. Looks promising, has already come in real useful on on other forums. Yep, however it works is above my knowledge but it is impressive how fast the notification comes

Solve : Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector?

Answer» http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,77196/description.html?tk=nl_ddxdwn

Quote
If you're a frequent user of Wi-Fi hot spots, you'll find this free software an invaluable tool, especially if you need to troubleshoot connections. Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector FINDS nearby Wi-Fi networks, gives an extraordinary information about each, manages your Wi-Fi connections, and monitors and reports on network speed and performance.

For each network that it finds, Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector tells you whether it's encrypted or not and if so, what encryption it uses; the signal strength; manufacturer of the router; what channel and frequency it uses; and whether it's an access point or a peer-to-peer connection--and more as well.

To HELP troubleshoot, the software also displays your IP address, information about your adapter and IP configuration. In addition, it PINGS your CONFIGURED DNS server and gateway to make sure they're active and alive.

There's plenty more here as well, including a speed tester. The software is a more POWERFUL version of Xirrus's free Wi-Fi Monitor, which runs as a Vista gadget. Both pieces of software are immensely useful for people who frequently connect to Wi-Fi networks.

Installed, and runs perfectly fine on my Vista.
Very nice program.

Looks good. Plenty of wireless hotspots back at home. Will be back in about 2 weeks.

Solve : FoxArc Screen Capture - easy to use?

Answer» http://www.sofotex.com/FoxArc-Screen-Capture-download_L96737.html

There are many free screen capture SOFTWARE tools AVAILABLE in the market such as Greenshot or Lightscreen and etc but in case you are not fully satisfied with any of them, now there is another one very simple yet useful tool, named as FoxArc Screen Capture that can help you simplify the whole screen capturing process.

Basically there are only four buttons on the main interface that allows users to specify how the screen capture mode is going to be. Users can select to capture the whole Windows or Desktop screen by clicking on ‘Get Window’ or ‘Get Desktop’ button. The most useful one is the ‘Get Region’ function that allows users to customize the capture region by simply controlling the keyboard or mouse for quick snapshot whenever there is a need. Once activated ‘Get Region’ function, a coordinate will be displayed and users can mouse it to the DESIRED position and fix it with the left button mouse click or space bar press on keyboard, followed by a mouse drag to the specific snapshot region for quick snapshot. After completion, just click on ‘Export Picture’ and users can proceed to save the snapshot into favorite formats such as jpg, png, bmp, tiff, pcx and etc.

The software utility is compatible with Windows 2000, XP and VistaThis is probably a stupid question but:

Does it support Dual-Screen Capture, like it Capture the contents of Both screens as a single picture?I just checked, and no, it won't capture dual screen.Alrighty.What does the Trap PrintSc button do?

FoxArc Screen Capture looks like a nice screen capture enhancement for Windows XP users. For Vista users, the benefit may not be very SIGNIFICANT, since Vista has the Snipping tool which FEATURES the ability to select a specific region and allows saving in various formats.

Solve : How to Create and Use a Password Reset Disk in Windows Vista?

Answer» http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/how-to-create-and-use-a-password-reset-disk-in-windows-vista/

Forgetting your password can be an extremely frustrating situation, but you can prevent the situation entirely by creating a password reset disk.

The Password Reset Disk is essentially a small file that can be used to reset your password, even if you have changed your password since creating the reset disk. This can be extremely valuable for preventing any embarrassing situations.

Naturally, you should store this in a very safe place, since it can be easily used by anybody to reset the password and gain access to your account.

Of course, Windows has supported the use of a Password Reset Disk for a while, but Windows Vista makes it really simple to use since you can use a USB Flash drive to store the reset file instead of a floppy. This should be in the FAQ database...and stickied...

Solve : Vista Backup and Restore?

Answer»

I planned on doing a well thought out Review on the Vista Backup and Restore feature built into Vista...

After 5 tries all unsuccessful with the exception of the last ONE i am so aggravated that i won't post what i think of it...other than if you are serious about Data backups then find a third-party utility such as Ghost or Acronis True image.

I gave this PLENTY of effort because it's a feature that should have been built into Windows long ago but they failed miserably in my mind.

P.S. Don't ask about the FILES and Settings WIZARD either...I've had this page mentally bookmarked if I ever found the need. http://www.techsupportforum.com/content/Software/Articles/169.html

Not sure if this is a good method or not. Thoughts?DLoaded and tested the .ISO...works great.

The Backup/Restore feature is for creating an image of a working machine...
I've given up and gone back to my trusted Acronis True Image. Quote from: patio on March 08, 2009, 08:58:45 AM
