However, the main PROBLEM is that you often don’t know what the original extension was. Or, what if someone sends you a file without an extension? was it a .doc file? was it a power point presentation? Who knows. This is where TrID comes in, TrID is a portable, freeware APPLICATION that can scan any files binary signature and identify the file type. EVEN better is that the application doesn’t hard code the binary signatures so you can create your own or download more. Currently, TrId has over 3000 file type / file extension definitions. TrID is available as a GUI interface, a command line interface and a online website. To use the GUI and Command Line interface versions, you NEED to download the definitions (link below) and place them in the same directory as the application. The GUI version doesn’t need you to put the definitions into the same directory, but the Command Line version does.

Answer» http://www.radarsync.com/ Quote RadarSync is a program and driver updater that scans a PC, finds and INSTALLS the correct updates for the computer. It has a database of thousands of programs which are updated daily, downloads directly from the vendor (no viruses or worms), and more. This should have been a fantastic program -- and early indications were that it was. We installed the program, allowed it to check for its own update, and set it to scan the computer. It found 34 programs and drivers which RadarSync said required updating. Unfortunately, you could not SELECT which program or driver you wished to download -- it was all or nothing. This we felt was wrong because quite often we deliberately choose not to use the latest version of a program, sometimes because the later version is not free and we have chosen to stay with the free version. After some considerable time downloading the hundreds of megabytes of programs of updates, we installed only those programs and drivers which we felt were applicabl e. We were particularly impressed with the option to create a Restore Point in Windows so we could go back to our previous version if there were problems with the new one. Having installed many dozens of the 34 suggested updates (some, to us, looked like they were the same program or driver but we diligently updated them anyway). We then rebooted the computer so that the new versions would become "live" and we re-scanned our computer. After the second scan there were now 41 items found, our original 34 plus a few more... What happened to all those updates we had already installed? Could all of them have been updated yet again? We doubt it. After about 12 hours we repeated the exercise. We then downloaded a fresh copy of the RadarSync program and tried again. Again, the same 41 items were discovered so we reinstalled most of them, and tried yet again. This time it found 39 items needing to be updated! We have no doubt that RadarSync was able to detect that we had these programs, but it was whether or not they needed to be updated which has caused us some concerns. Our download for the updates was well in excess of 450MB, so we are a little apprehensive about the ultimate value in RadarSync. It should WORK, it seems to work, but we have our reservations. This is one of those programs you will just have to try for yourself and judge if it is of value to you. We do suggest caution when allowing it to overwrite some programs which what might be paid-for versions of free programs you may already have. This includes some SE or Lite versions of programs obtained with equipment (video hardware, etc) and also updates of paid versions to a new version which REQUIRES further payment. oo nice! Interesting.....Just downloaded now... will reply once going.

Answer» HERE Quote Run virtually any OS inside VirtualBox on virtually any PC. I've been on the virtual machine bandwagon for a few years now. Installing and testing programs inside a VM keeps my work PC's OS installation safe, and I don't have to CONSTANTLY run over to my test bed to check things. How I managed to miss VirtualBox, which Sun recently aquired from Innotek, is a mystery to me. However, I'm glad I finally found it. VirtualBox is more capable than Microsoft's Virtual PC 2007 in most respects and a bit friendlier than VMware's free VMware Player and VMware Server--though it proved a hair glitchy with removable media and peripherals at times. By more capable than VPC 2007, I mean that VirtualBox supports operating systems other than Microsoft's,as well as USB and SATA, which VPC 2007 does not.. The latter TWO features are part of closed source editions, but there's an open source edition of VirtualBox for developers that's also free for the download. As to more friendly, I found the VirtualBox tabbed startup/control dialog easier to intuit than VMWare's, and when minimized, VirtualBox's VM icon is different from the VirtualBox control panel. Virtual PC 2007's are identical, and I'm forever wasting time clicking on the wrong one. On the other hand, with Virtual PC 2007 you can drag virtually anything between the host OS and guest OS (the one you're running as a VM)--an extremely handy feature--while VirtualBox only ALLOWS cut and paste of text. One thing it took me a while to hunt down was any type of Save/Load function. You must invoke VirtualBox's Virtual Disk Manager then "add" a new drive, which is a bit unintuitive in my book. But the kicker is, you can open existing VMWare machines with VirtualBox. Hence, though at first blush it might appear that it has little communal support, you have access to a whole host of guests (saved VMs), so to speak. Other than the weak cut-and-paste with the Windows version (there are Linux and Mac versions of VirtualBox that I've yet to try), my only minor complaint about Virtual Box is the USB support, which in my hands-on was a bit iffier than VMWare's. It took me several tries to get some devices to work, and instead of the little host-OS-system-tray-tooltip-bubble you get with VMWare, you get the full-blown "Add New Hardware" wizard with multiple dialogs you must step through. I also received one or two error messages within the guest OS window (XP SP2 in this case) though after a couple of restarts, everything worked okay and continued that way. VirtualBox is tough competition for Virtual PC 2007 and VMWare. It's free, fast and supports every OS I want to install (you can even attach images of boot discs like Acronis True Image or R-Drive Image and boot from them). It seems stable enough so FAR, and in my book it's definitely a keeper. B, you may just have surpassed Patio with this one! (SHHH...don't tell him I "said" that.) The question arises, does it support virtual discs?
