Solve : RaidMax Smilodon? |
Answer» Manuf. Link I just completed a new build and ordered this case out of curiosity as it had recieved good reviews mostly at gamer's Forums. Although i'm not a gamer my needs for a roomy well built case that is easy to work in made me give this one a whirl. I was not dissappointed Quote Features: I'll start with the features i love and end with the few minor quirks i didn't like... Room: Plenty big enough for my needs. 2 burners and 3 SATA drives along with an IDE i couldn't part with plus a floppy drive ( i'm a purist OK ? ) all fit nicely and i can add more down the road. Construction: Very well built steel case. Solid rounded edges and nice hinges on both sides. One of the knocks on this case is that it was heavy...i see this as a plus for me. He must have been a LAN Party gamer. Features: Both case sides open all the way down and or can be removed...this to me was the slickest feature as the build could not have gone smoother. It's a dream to have the MBoard tray lying flat for the assembly. The only drawback was the 4 pin ATX power plug from the OCZ 750W PSU WOULD not allow it opening all the way after everything was connected...this was remedied bu making an extension using a spare i had lying about. I also added an EVGA 8800 GTX video card to this and for those that have one i don't need to tell you how BIG they are...this fit suprisingly well and created no issues at all with opening and closing the MBoard side of the case. Toolless Design: Also a nice feature that i was skeptical of at first...drive installs take seconds and the plastic cam design on the drive holders themselves are sturdy and well thought out. Cooling: Best i've seen in a stock case in a long time. 120MM stock front case fan blows directly over the HDD bay...nice thinking. on the open side there is a removable rail that contains an 80MM fan that can slide into position so it winds up over the vid card. With the 8800 GTX i'm sure this will come in handy. A 2nd 80MM is well placed directly opposite the CPU/Heatsink location...also well thought out. This vents to the outside of the case. 80MM rear case exhaust fan. Cons: IDE clik rails are tricky to figure out the first time but a breeze after that. Removeable swing-out HDD box is tricky the first few times as well but fine afterwards. Rear case exhaust fan should have been a 120mm but i'm adding that later so no big deal. Plastic case feet. For a case this well thought out i'd have preferred to see rubber but again i'm replacing those myself. With the size of the 8800GTX i lose one PCI slot but this is more of a MBoard issue than a case issue. Overall: I'd recommend this case to anyone doing a new build or a first time build as well. You need room for it as it's bigger than most. But with solid construction and well thought out features i give it a 9 out of 10. patio.Wow, not bad. I'm impressed actually. Someone built something good for a change. Quote * Retractable side panel with handles for easy access and upgradesYou got me hooked into READING the entire post there. It may be because I'm not looking hard enough....but how much was it?Oooops sorry. I thought the review was running long and wouldn't fit the page so i left out some details... I grabbed it from newegg and after Rebate my final cost was $61.00 U.S. Here's what all went into the beast : ASUS P5K MBoard. Intel Q6600 4G OCZ PC2 8500 Platinum EVGA 8800GTX Vid Card OCZ Elite 800W PSU Lite-On dual layer DVD burner X 2 500G Seagate SATA 200G Seagate SATA 100G WD Caviar SATA 80G WD Caviar IDE I expect this rig to handle everything i throw at it and then some for a few years to come... Initially booted to the WD IDE that has a multi-boot DOS; Win98; Win2K setup and did the repair install to get Win2K to pick up the new hardware.....WORKED flawlessly. But i will be installing Vista Ultimate 64 Bit on the 500G seagate after i partition it to 4 X 125G. This is and has been a really fun build. I do it so many times for customers it's time i spoiled myself a little. So far no major hitches and i'm interested to see Vista Ultimate for the first time.Quote from: patio on September 01, 2008, 09:31:55 AM ASUS P5K MBoard. Woah, I'd say you'll have no problem there... Nice Update to the build... After doing a Repair install of my other Win2K hard drive to get it to recognise the new Hardware i partitioned and formatted the new 500G hard drive and installed XP on the first partition and Vista Ultimate 64Bit on the 2nd partition. Sweet ! However i do have a few Vista gripes but that's for another time...Curious... 1) Why Seagate drives? 2) Why not a WD Raptor - at least for the Vista boot drive? My last Raptor failed 3 weeks into the build as i was taking my time with it. I got a full refund instead of a replacement. Stubborn you could say as i love WD drives and have used them as a mainstay for years... Quote from: patio on September 16, 2008, 06:04:10 PM My last Raptor failed 3 weeks into the build as i was taking my time with it.Got it - just seemed with that build that you would have one. I've used WD exclusively for many years - yet to have a problem; but, that's just luck. I've got (EDIT - 3) raptors in mine, about 2-1/2 years and no problems. I think that it's a cheap way to get extra performance (one, not three - long story!)The Seagate was rated pretty quick in all the reviews i read so i just jumped the gun... I'll post the specs when i get caught up with things...Patio, Looks like a great MACHINE and hopefully it will give you years of pleasure. I would be interested to hear your comments re the Vista O/S after you have been usung it for a while.Holding off going to it as still most comments are not positive. may also be being influenced by the "Apple" adds on T.V. truenorthThanx Truenorth... I plan on doing a comprehensive review on Vista after about 3 or 4 months... The time lag is because i use 3 different OS's on a regular basis but that habit may have to change for the time being so i can really dig into the guts of it. I promise to be impartial as always and hopefully informative.... Or maybe i'll just play more Golf. Do you need a review on a new set of clubs or the courses in your area ? ? Willing to travel ! Patio, Thanks will keep an eye out for your Vista review. Golf? I believe that is something about whacking a little white ball around a field all day. Never got into it. With over 5 acres of property and a 115 year old house that nature keeps trying to reclaim plus all the other nonsense i manage to import (a lot of which are broken and i cannot bare to see going to landfills) i typically have a 15 item to do list everyday. But i believe it helps keep the body young and the brain active. truenorthThat may be just enough property for a Golf course ... I'd be willing to design and landscape as long as you feed me at the end of the day.... Patio, If i could persuade you to concider other endeavors (of the PHYSICAL nature) i would contemplate more than feeding you--how about adoption? truenorth |

Solve : AVG Remover - some of you didn't believe me, when....? |
Answer» ...I kept saying, AVG ver. 8.0 became a bloated program. Why not just uninstall it via the Add/Remove Programs you might say? Because sometimes the uninstaller doesnt completely remove everything. If you try to install a new version of AVG or some other antivirus, you cant because it believes that the OLD AVG is still installed. This FIXES that by running a script that removes all the registry keys that AVG left behind. AVG Remover: http://www.avg.com/download-tools I tried to tell you.... Thanks!! I updated the Removal Tools and Methods for Uninstalling Major Antivirus ProductsSure thing Special tools should be reserved for removing malware. Not a legitimate antivirus! Now you're talking... Also, I don't recall, if it was same with AVG 7.5, but, if you run GMER on a computer with AVG 8.0, its entries show there....means, it as DEEPLY built into system core as Norton, and McAfee. Thus, special tool is needed, like for any rootkit. Thought this Horse was dead already.....Never, or at least until YOU admit, AVG 8.0 is not that great NOPE...Nope to what? This is totally awesome.Quote from: tina1rules on June 19, 2009, 10:14:17 AM This is totally awesome.Tina try not to bump an older thread. |

Solve : The Case of the Killer Robot? |
Answer» I sure love the old Looney Tune Cartoons. I think Killer Robots obviously would not be good, but would be so cool to see Watch Terminator 3Killer Robot? Well, I think it's amazing!Killer Robots!Quote from: reddevilggg on February 23, 2009, 04:55:35 AM
I PREFER Terminator 2, but the robot in Terminator 3 is more deadly I agree.Case of the Killer Robot Author(s): Richard G. Epstein Richard G. Epstein, Westchester University of Pennsylvania Mike Melamed, CWRU 2000 The Case of the Killer Robot is a detailed SCENARIO that combines elements of software engineering and computer ethics. The scenario consists of fictitious articles that touch on specific issues in software engineering and computer ethics. The articles discuss programs such as programmer psychology, team dynamics, user interfaces, software process models, software testing, the nature of requirements, software theft, and privacy. A major consideration is "when is the software good enough?" The articles in the scenario begin with the indictment for manslaughter of a programmer who wrote faulty code that caused the death of a robot operator. Slowly, over the course of many articles, students are introduced to factors within the software company that also contributed to the accident. They are shown software development as a social process. It is hoped that students will begin to realize the COMPLEXITY of the task of building real-world software and to see some of the ethical issues intertwined in that complexity. This scenario is about 70 pages long and includes some tongue-in-cheek humor. Source: http://www.onlineethics.org/cms/6769.aspxWell, if you're going to start writing about ethics, we're outta here! I shall have to look for that.Quote 1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. Not the best story but I'll keep you posted I found one but the swearing on it will certainly see me with a ban!Sauerbraten Sauerbraten is a first person shooter that offers excitement and action in a style reminiscent of Quake II. It's the not the most advanced game of it's type available, it is immersive, with an affective lighting and solid physics engine, and a great soundtrack. It's draws on the success of its predecessor Cube with extensive and original editing options. Like Cube, Sauerbraten is free, open source and runs on Windows, Linux, freeBSD and Mac OS x. Cube was a project that took the editing of 3d games to a new level, with the ability to create scenery in real time within the game. As well as general improvements to the game engine, the editing features in Sauerbraten are more advanced, with it's six-directional heightfield deformable cube octree system. Basically, this means that you can build any shape by starting with a rectangle on the floor, extending upwards to create a cuboid and PULL in different DIRECTIONS to create your shape. Rather than follow a story structure, the game is based on showcasing it's tech. If you want to enter the edit suite press the E key. http://sauerbraten.org/ Re-Vamp Win XP Although Win Vista has now been on sale for QUITE a while, most of us will only change are OS if we replace our computers. If you feel that your copy of XP has become a little sluggish and jaded or your just looking at Vista and wishing you had some of those features there are plenty of ways to help. Updated programmes A lot of the programmes supplied as standard with XP are starting to look a bit dated now, but the good news is that most have newer versions available to download from the Microsoft website. These include live messanger, live mail and a newer version of media player (beware if you have a pirate copy of XP on your system these can result in a complete shutdown of your OS. And so it should.) You can also try Powertoys which will add some functions not standard with XP including making your desktop imitate Vista. Since the launch of XP, MS has made many extra features available as powertoys. These are semi-functional in that there available to download from the MS website, but there not supported by MS. Try TweakUi (very good) Powertoys link: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx |

Solve : CCleaner updated their Analysis screen? |
Answer» I just updated CCleaner and discovered they have updated the window that displays the results of a Windows scan or Applications scan. Instead of displaying a list of all items, they now show categories of items found. This greatly SHORTENS the initial list; in fact, the FULL results will probably be a short enough list to appear on one screen. If any of these categories are double-clicked, they expand and display the DETAILS of items found in that category. |

Everybody is all, "ohh, he climbed everest, that's what made him famous!" and it is, but he was prouder of his other accomplishment, where he managed to fit 3 live ferrets in his mouth at once. Same story with good old Edmund Halley, people remember him by the comet that was named after him, and his prediction, but what he REALLY wanted people to remember was his bible mad lib that replaced all the nouns and verbs. for example: The lord is my bluish toad and my frito; he has become my favourite thing after Urkel. He is my Snookums, and I will praise him, my FATHER's Horse, and I will exalt him, except on Thursdays, which are Days of PRAYER for the great Urkel. Tradition says we must perform one RANDOM act of stupidity and then exclaim in AMAZEMENT, "did I do that?". When he was on his death bed, he realized, that if the comet did return in the time he predicted, nobody would ever remember his mad-lib involving a fictional character on a medium that was not present at the time. He was heartbroken. And to think that somewhere a doctor is looking for you....Urkel be praised! oh dear. this is going off-topic. Did I do That? At any rate, I'd like to POINT out that Snagit has been around for Ages. Great program. It's been around for ages, but never free great Find |

Solve : Bulk Rename Utility? |
Answer» http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Main_Intro.php Bulk Rename Utility is a free file RENAMING software for Windows. Bulk Rename Utility ALLOWS you to easily rename files and entire folders based upon extremely flexible criteria. Add date/time stamps, replace numbers, insert text, convert case, add auto-numbers, process folders and sub-folders....plus a whole lot more! - Rename multiple files quickly, according to many flexible criteria. - Rename files in many ways: add, replace, insert text into file names. Convert case, add numbers. Remove or change file EXTENSIONS. - Check the DETAILED preview before renaming. - Rename photos using EXIF meta data (i.e. "Date Picture Taken", "Resolution" and other information embedded in all JPG photo files) Rename your holiday pictures from a meaningless dsc1790.jpg to NewYork1.jpg in a flash. - Rename MP3 files using ID3 tags (a.k.a. MP3 ID3 tag renaming). - Change files' creation and modification time stamps. - It's free. That UI is obviously designed by a developer It's... almost painful to look at, really... Kind of reminds me of this blog post: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000734.html I think I'll stick to file searching, at least for now- got to stop feature creep before it gets out of hand... Otherwise we end up with... Considering I was able to hack together the ability to enumerate Alternate Data Streams using the Backup API I can probably put some support for EXIF into BCFile... which would mean searching based on that data would be trivial. This has given me many new ideas for my library too- right now the date properties are read-only... but why not make them writable? the UI though... seriously...I have been using Bulk Rename Utility for a while now and it works well. The only problem I have had with it is that it cannot read the "date taken" EXIF data from my pictures. As a substitute, I use the "modified" date for the "Auto Date" feature.Great post thanks Broni, just downloaded and it works great. Solve : SuperF4 Terminates Foreground Processes Instantly with HotKey? |
Answer» http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/08/01/superf4-terminates-foreground-processes-instantly-with-hotkey/ The traditional way to kill hung process is to go to Task Manager, by pressing Crlt+Alt+Delete, look for that process, then selects it and click End Process button. Alternatively, you can press Alt+F4 to terminate it directly. However, sometimes it may end up the process refuses to quit, this is because this method typically asks the program to quit (it behave the same way as when you click X button at the upper right of the window) and let it to decide by itself on what to do for the next. That’s why you may fail to terminate processes sometimes by using this method. Now with SuperF4, it can force processes to terminate instantly without letting it any chance to decide what to do later. SuperF4 is a free utility that reside on SYSTEM tray silently. To kill any processes, you can press Ctrl+Alt+F4 hotkey, then the process will be terminated instantly. Besides using hotkey, it has provided you another method to kill processes by using mouse. To enable the mouse mode, press Win+F4 and you will notice that the cursor changes to skull and crossbones icon, then click on the window to terminate it. To DISABLE the mouse mode, just press Esc key and the cursor will changes to normal look. SuperF4 http://superf4.googlecode.com/files/SuperF4-1.0%20%28Installer%29.exe) consumes only 0.08 MB of your hard disk space and is able to kill all kinds of processes, regardless of hung or active processes. You may need to take note that it doesn’t prompt you to save your work before it is terminated, so please make sure that you have saved all WORKS before using it to kill especially for active processes. SuperF4 definitely will come handy as you don’t need to reboot your computer anymore whenever the hung process fails to be terminated.Cool I've downloaded thanks for that Broni. Downloaded and it works great! Make sure on vista or win 7 to run the installer as adminDon't kill your computer BTW, the above tool costs 1 gift certificate enjoy!Looks little bit fake...think, I can use it? yup!As an aside- the different between This and a regular alt-F4 is that the standard Alt+F4 sends the foreground window the WM_CLOSE message; SuperF4 get's the foreground process and forces it to close with TerminateProcess... Say, what happens if you Ctrl-Alt-F4 Explorer? It terminates that too. There should be some thing so it doesnt terminate it. Im taskbarless nowQuote from: computeruler on AUGUST 03, 2009, 09:59:43 PM It terminates that too. There should be some thing so it doesnt terminate it. Solve : New Computer - Is this a scam?? |
Answer» I have been investigating many new computers lately, but the two that stuck out for me were these: The processor and graphics card together are capable of playing games such as COD 5.Sure, they're capable of handling most modern games at low/medium settings. Quote The graphics card i thought was one of the better ones from Nvidia, I know its no the 9800 GT X or anything but its not "Low" end is it? although it is quite cheap in priceIt is low end, yes. I have one in my server, so I know. As I said, it's fine for older games or newer games on lower settings, but it's a low end card. If you're not a gamer, or don't mind lowering settings, it'd be fine for you. For the price though, you can do much better I think. Quote Thanks for the tips, i will definitely look into putting one together myself (from Newegg?)Newegg seems good to me, I know most people buy from there. I'm in the UK so I can't comment personally. If you need any help or advice putting a build together do feel free to ask, some of us are also quite good at speccing out machines so I'm sure you'll get some full build suggestions too. With that in mind, do you need a keyboard/mouse/monitor/anything else other than the computer?late post yes... but anyway 9500GT is not a bad graphics card if you are command and conquer 3, AOE3, Battlefield 2 type of gamer and it requires very low power. But it's probably better to say that it's similar to an integrated graphics card, except it has descrete memory onboard .... Put one together yourself on newegg. If you want to play anything like cod5 on high then you want something better then a 9500gt. That cpu ISNT the best EITHER. If you want some help selecting parts then give me a budget |

Solve : Macrium Reflect? |
Answer» The issue of not having proper backups comes up here more than we care to see. Windows Server 2003 compatibility A few other observations: It wants to give it's own file name to each image created...make sure to create your own so they can be tracked; burned to CD/DVD etc. It wants to save to the last folder/partition it used. Not such a big deal unless you move/swap drives and partitions around as much as i do...so pay attention to where the image is being saved to. The info on using it a Bart's PE enviornment are OK but INCOMPLETE...however these can be found at the Bart's site anyways. Overall Score : I'd have to give this one a 9 out of 10 as a FREE alternative to the paid apps out there. It's a solid performer without alot of bells and whistles...just what i look for in software. Conclusion: Although for my needs the missing features are a drawback so it won't replace ATI for me but for ALL others out there that are stubborn or putting off backups you now have NO EXCUSE. Get it now. No telling how long the FREE version will be around. patio 02_19_09 Step by Step Guide Reason for edit: Tutorial added Kudos to Broni. An added tip i neglected to MENTION... Image files should always be verified by the app that created them before being relied upon as backups...most people skip this time consuming step. Always store them on a partition/drive that does NOT get de-fragmented....this will ruin a good image file. patio.See i told you people ignore backups.... remember when backing up that your reverse lights are on.Macrium Reflect suprisingly enough does this automatically...i had never seen those white lights on my hard drives prior to this...I got hit by a trailer that was REVERSING. I didn't see any white lights, then it hit me, and I did. In any case your quite right in declaring that people don't do backups. I myself am in the "too lazy" sub-group, despite losing copious amounts of work as a result of not having a backup. However you have driven me to perform this "backup" thing people speak so highly of. I better not be all sticky afterwards. I hate when that happens.Trust me...you'll do fine. No stickiness i promise.thanx for the heads up, as I suspected vista falls short on backup. love this forum....I would also like to post back... I was in fact not sticky afterwards. However I felt a certain EMPTINESS... so I ate a sandwich.PBJ ? ? With bananas ?well, actually, yes, PBJ. However this caused an interesting conundrum- I got jam on myself, and thus ended up sticky anyway.I KNEW it ! ! |
