Solve : stuck in automatic repair loop. cant refresh. cant system restore.? |
Answer»

Hi.
I accidentally removed a usb cable from a powered usb hub , and a volume slider of some other program appeared superimposed and floating above my music making program , so I restarted the pc.
From then on , it wouldnt start , and kept saying preparing AUTOMATIC repair, then reached 40% and wouldnt go any further.
After trying this a number of times , it has now changed to a blue screen with a sad face and it says " critical process died"

I unplugged my 2 external drives because they werent showing in the bios , and plugged them into my laptop to check they were ok , and im relieved to say they are.

Since i removed the drives , my desktop ( asus ) will eventually arrive at the blue recovery screen , but all these things that are supposed to help fix it , arent working.

When I try to refresh , it says the drive where windows is installed is locked
Ive tried to do a system restore from 3 different restore points and none of them have worked ( one actually cited a mozilla profile as being the cause )
Re-image wont work because it cant find the image file , which is on one of my external drives which are now unplugged.
Automatic repair diagnoses , but then says it cant repair.

I can use command prompt, and was hoping I could rename the system hive name , but the command prompt says
X=\windows\system32.
I have successfuly ran regedit from the command prompt , but to be honest , im out of my depth and dont know what im doing , but at least something is working.

From the recovery section , ive been able to run chkdsk c: r/f/x , and it replaced 2 bad clusters , and I thought it was fixed , but upon restart it just went straight BACK into the repairing / cant repair , debacle.

I had no reasons to expect anything untoward before yesterday. Solve : Windows 8.1 Malware & Virus finally removed!! Now Metro Apps Don't Work. Help!? |
Answer»

Hello,
I just went through an extensive, whole week Trojan Virus fix. Now the factory installed apps for 8.1 do not work at all. Calculator only works in the (I WILL REPEAT THIS AGAIN "Windows 7 "type" application. I cannot access PC Settings. When I CLICK on it, the program looks like it's opening and then LEAVES a grey box on my task bar in Windows 7. Windows 8.1 Search is the only one that works... which is odd.

Do you have a solution for this?

Thank you,
Soldbylinz

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Seriously. Will someone help me?1) This is a forum not a chat room. Please just POST your question and wait for a response.

2) In the meanwhile, please explain exactly what: "I just went through an extensive, whole week Trojan Virus fix" means. EXACTLY what did you do?I never said this was a chat room. Sorry you're being negative today.

I had a gnarly issue with a trojan virus as well as a ton of malware which more than likely corrupted the 8.1 applications.. Since I purchased my computer the Windows 8.1 applications have not worked and NO I WILL NOT GO BACK TO BEST BUY AND CONVERSE WITH GEEK SQUAD.

Quote from: soldbylinz on June 27, 2014, 12:22:14 PM

Sorry you're being negative today.

He is not being 'negative'. He is merely explaining to you how forums work. You ask a question and -- maybe -- someone will read it who knows how to help, and wants to help you. Posting THINGS like "Seriously. Will someone help me?" will just make you seem like a whiner with an excessive sense of entitlement, and will make your chances of getting help smaller. Also shouting in capitals like you think we're all stupid.

lol. You are taking it out of context my friend. I wrote a post about this earlier and someone in the forum SUGGESTED that I take it back to where I bought it and have geek squad and I was just stating that I wouldn't do that.
And the "Seriously" was trying to get someone's attention and see it worked Quote from: soldbylinz on June 27, 2014, 02:22:48 PM
And the "Seriously" was trying to get someone's attention and see it worked

It got you negative attention. No help posts yet...
You are correct.
Well hey, when I get a reply for help that would be awesome. What's really strange about the Windows 8.1 apps is only Calculator and the Search apps work. I cannot access anything else. Even PC Settings doesn't work. Like in my first post with the screenshot, every application (8.1) leaves a little icon on the task bar and that's it seems your account totally corrupted.
try creating another user account.
it will work.

| |

Solve : Can't figure out what's going on with playing video from FB? |
Answer»

My husband's laptop is Windows 8. The computer is a Dell, Processor: Intel(R)Core(TM) i5-3210M [emailprotected] 2.50Ghz, RAM 8.00 GB, 64-bit operating system. I hope that's all I need to tell you. The problem is when he goes onto Facebook there are videos people post (you've seen them) and sometimes they will play just fine, and sometimes they don't play at all. You can hear the sound but the video is black. I have tried to make it work, by changing how Adobe works and numerous other little things I could think of, but nothing works. I am less computer challenged than he is (but basically I am computer stupid) and I am completely stumped on this one. I use Vista on my computer and not all that familiar with Windows 8. He is using Windows Internet Explorer 10. Hoping this is an easy fix, can anyone help me get these videos to work?

Thanks in advance!!!

Debby
Do you mean Windows 8.1, or is he really still using Windows 8? Is your husband's computer not getting updates from Microsoft? Now, granted, I can't say that getting all the updates will make a difference with the issue here, but the updates from Microsoft should normally be installed as they come since many of them are security-related.

To see what version of Windows he has, open File Explorer, right click on This PC, and select Properties. To see the version of IE, open IE, click on Help (on the menu bar), and select About Internet Explorer.

You might try deleting Browsing History in IE. You'll see that option on the Tools menu (on the menu bar).

Also, check to see whether he has the latest version of Flash Player. A way to do that is to go to https://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/. If the latest version is installed, you will see You have version 14,0,0,145 installedYou know what...my husband's laptop is Windows 7. I thought it was 8. Solve : Windows Login? |
Answer»

I finally upgraded to 8.1 but now I have to log in with a password which I do not want. I hate login passwords. It looks like you're hiding something which I am not.Start->Run->Netplwiz

Uncheck "Users must use a username and password to use this computer" and use OK to close the dialog.

If I recall another dialog will appear here for automatic sign in. Only thing of note is if you are using a Microsoft account to login, you'll need to use the E-mail address rather than just the username.

It didn't work. I still have to put in a password. Another thing I hate about 8.1. Can apps be deleted/uninstalled? Sorry for the delay, wanted to give this a proper test.

I was able to get a 8.1 Virtual Machine to automatically login using that method. It didn't work the first TIME though.

When I unchecked the box and pressed OK it prompted for username/password for automatic login. The username that was filled out was wrong, and I had to write out my full account name (in my case, using a @hotmail address) and of course the password. My first attempt had me enter the wrong password, so when I rebooted it didn't login automatically- but it did start off saying that the login password was incorrect. Once I repeated the steps and entered the CORRECT password, it now logs in automatically for me when I reboot it.

To uninstall an app you should be able to right-click it, Uninstall should be ONE of the menu options. Thanks B C. Solve : D:\ (folder)? |
Answer»

Now that I got the new drive running, and named it D. I added ONE folder to it, with my name on it. Clicking the problem "folder" takes me to my D drive, and if I try to restore it to it's previous location, it gives me an error. Right now. If I delete it, nothing will happen, because I can just go back and re install my second drive as D. But It won't uninstall. Well, I still need to try the uninstall program that was mentioned earlier.Downloaded and fought of my antivirus not wanting me to download the Unlocker. Only downloaded it because I saw CNET and trust them. I saw no option to use it for one particular item, and so, being willing to just start everything from scratch, if ABSOLUTELY necessary, I just let it do everything it wanted to do. That File is still there. I do have to log into everything that I was previously logged into again, though. Quote

Only downloaded it because I saw CNET and trust them.
You don't trust CNET? If I had anything on this computer other than the basic programs, and some I added, I would not be downloading willy nilly, but what have I got to loose at this point? A few more hours of tweeking, maybe.in the explorer, on the left column, right under "This PC" is listed D:\. I changed the drive letter of the disk to x, and broke the link. It was still there and when I changed it back to D, it works again. It is definately a link to the D data drive, but it is sure in a confusing location.
It may help if you can get a screenshot
Crop and save it as a good JPG. I think I know what you are saying but there could also be other details shown in an image that you don't think are significant.

Based on what you've said, it sounds to me like this item is appearing within your "Libraries" folder? Does it (or rather, did it- soulds like you've sinced wiped the drive) look similar to what I've managed to recreate in this image? (in this case I USED a Drive G:)

If it is similar to that than you managed to add the drive to one of the libraries. It would also be consistent with what you mentioned in some later replies.

I have found placed on the web that show how to use the registry edit, to remove those folders, but they give a list of the ones that everyone has, and I have all of those but no others, so that was a dead end. I think I will just give up and reinstall the system. I have spent more time trying to save time, than it is worth. Thank for all your help.

| |

Solve : Windows 8.1 locked me out of my computer? |
Answer»

I need some help, please. My computer came with Windows 8 installed. For the past several months, it has been trying to get me to update to Windows 8.1. I declined the update....did not want to have to relearn a new system.

On Monday, my computer automatically updated to Windows 8.1. After the update, I was prompted to set up an outlook email account. After being asked tons of personal information, I aborted set up of the email, closed my computer for the night, and went to bed.

Upon login Tuesday morning, my "new" (unwanted) outlook email was listed as my computer login. I typed in the password that I created, and it failed to login. My old login is completely gone. I am now completed locked out of my computer.

I have contacted Microsoft via email, live chat, remote login, phone, etc. They told me that I don't have enough information about my email account to RESET the password. No kidding! The account was never even fully set up, and it was only hours old before the problem. They want proof of emails sent, folders set up.....I never even used the email. This information is impossible to provide.

Does anybody know how I can go around the lock screen, or restore my system to Windows 8 without losing my files, photos, etc.

I am so FRUSTRATED with the lack of support at Microsoft. They say this is for security. Can't someone use common sense and realize the acct. is brand new?!?!?

Thanks for any help. This is my primary computer with all of my children's schoolwork, and my work documents.

Carmen

P.S. It is a Toshiba Satellite Laptop. Just found this one that was never addressed from 5/9, and decided to answer just in case Carmen NEEDS help still.

This computer should probably be brought to a computer shop to be serviced. Windows 8 and 8.1 make it difficult to recover files.

Also as far as the 8.1 upgrade, I had a laptop with 8 that I upgraded to 8.1 and almost fell into the same trap as you with geting locked out, but I wrote everything down as I was doing it so that if something went wrong I'd have the info written down. I was able to go in and undo the Windows Live Account default of 8.1 upgrade, but it was not easy.

For the fact that you are completely locked out of your system and you probably do not have system recovery disc's or thumb drive media, it means that an ADVANCED computer knowledge individual will need to visit this system. One way to gain access to the data is to boot the system off of Linux Disc, BUT due to UEFI, UEFI blocks OS other than Windows 8 or 8.1 from running on systems if set a certain USUALLY default way. More info on UEFI here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unified_Extensible_Firmware_Interface

My laptop has the UEFI configured in such a way that if the Windows 8 or 8.1 ever had gotten corrupted, I would never have been able to gain access to the BIOS to make changes. I had to disable UEFI in the operating system to give the BIOS controls back to me in order to run an other than Windows 8 or 8.1 OS.

Is this computer still covered by a warranty?

| |

Solve : Oscillating MAC addresses? |

Solve : Windows 8.1 low memory errors and pagefile spikes? |
Answer»

Hi,

I've been dealing with an annoying issue for several months now that coincides with the upgrade to Windows 8.1, though I cannot confirm that it was nonexistent in Windows 8.0. When using intensive programs, 3D/video editing and games and such, Windows will eventually bring up a "low memory" error prompting me to close the program. With DirectX applications, namely games, DirectX crashes will occasionally accompany these errors, reporting CreateTexture2D failure. Typically the Windows error dialog can be ignored for a while.

My computer is:
ASRock Z77
700W PSU
i5 4670
8GB 1600MHz
GTX 770M 2GB

8GB memory as mentioned and I'm not planning on bumping it up for this problem considering my suspicions the problem would persist. 2GB VRAM should ALSO be plenty for my uses, as I have monitored constant underusage. I have already tried several different things, including setting static pagefile at 8 or 16GB (as well as off, in the intermediate between resetting the pagefile to defragment it, for those who may still support disabling it), underclocking/undervolting GPU and undoing overclocks, disabling hyperthreading, and running applications in 32-bit where applicable. Plenty more attempted solutions that I've attempted over the months that I can't remember from the top of my head.

However, I noticed recently that MSI Afterburner reported these errors and crashes were brought upon by an erratic spike in pagefile usage followed by an immediate drop back down the regular usage.

Despite the jump to 24GB, I believe both of these instances were using either a 8GB or 16GB fixed pagefile, though this occurs just as frequently with a dynamically-sized one.

Any ideas? This is driving me crazy! This is not a cure, ,but a diagnostic method.
You system is basically stable. -Right?
You have backups of important stuff. -Right?
Do this. Partition the hard drive so you can have another OS. Likely you have an old OS lyou can use on that computer. You don't need a lot of space. about 20GB 25 GB is enough for test. Install the older OS. Expect it to mess up your windows 8 install, but you can repair Woodwinds 8 after the install of the older system.
You will end up with a dual boot. Windows 8 has a nice visual boot screen, windows 7 does not. So at this point you can boot into either system and compare performance and issues.
If you still get errors, assume that you hardware has gone bad and it was not Windows 8 that brought on the trouble.

Yes, this takes time, but it is not rocket science. Doing a dual-boot install is not so hard. It gives you a simple way to determine if the fault is with the OS and not the hardware. And it gives you a perspective about the behavior of either OS.

EDIT: Windows 8.1 can run inside of 1 GB says MS. So you can try removing some sticks and see what happens.Afterburner doesn't look particularly useful in this regard.

You can use a more full-featured tool such as Process Explorer. It shows much of the same information but can do so at the process level; the idea here being to figure out which processes are using that memory.

Based on the incomplete information MSI Afterburner shows, It looks like a memory leak- a process will continue to make allocations until an allocation fails- at which point SAID process will crash.

Monitoring the various Memory-related values in Process explorer could help find the culprit.

I suspect svchost.exe (or possibly dllhost.dll); my reasoning is that a Crashing application would normally show the standard " has stopped working" error, but if that process is a service no such error would appear- in fact, in the case of a service, the Service Control Manager will automatically restart said service.

Geek-9pm, thanks. I do indeed have a Windows 7 and XP disc on hand. I'll get it installed as soon as I have a chunk of time where I don't need my computer for work and can risk issues cropping up. Sorry I won't be able to do it sooner, since the process and potential complications (considering I still find myself fumbling with unfamiliar changes in Windows 8 ) has deterred me a little from testing another OS in a dual boot or reverting to 8.0.

BC_Programmer, yeah, Afterburner isn't too detailed and I do have better tools installed. I didn't really think about hunting down the process since I had attempted to do so earlier while the application was running but I suppose I wasn't expecting memory spikes rather than a gradual memory leak. Afterburner was simply the only thing I had conveniently open that showed this, since the Task Manager showed normal-looking usage. Next time I run said intensive programs for a decent length of time, I'll be sure to keep up Process Explorer too and get back immediately with results from this, though your prediction and explanation sounds plausible.

Many thanks to you both! Sorry that this is simply acknowledgement and gratitude of your posts; I'll actually get on it as soon as possible.Noticed unnecessarily large AMOUNTS of memory committed by svchost at the peak of spikes, as you predicted. I don't have any screen caps of it, but that led me to find very similar incidents that still seem unsolved for the original posters. They noted these errors occur especially in Windows 8.1 and only in full screen--and, indeed, after HALTING full screen use/features or switching to windowed/borderless, svchost.exe stops acting up.

Related post + similar results as mine among a few others I've read: http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=1225941

Presumably this does not occur for all 8.1 users, so I'll see if I can this time note which services were being run by the process or more exactly what is allocating all that memory. I don't think I need to investigate under other OSes to troubleshoot my hardware under these circumstances, although I intend to clean install Windows (8, 8.1) in the future to see what changes.Quote

This issue is triggered when the resolution in which the games are being played differs from the resolution configured on Windows.
If you are playing a game, say, in 1366x768, you need to change the system resolution to the same 1366x768 BEFORE opening the game. That will stop the excessive memory consumption and you'll be able to play the game fine.

(From the Microsoft Answer's THREAD linked on a post in the thread you linked)Just a quick note, though I don't have any further progress: no worries, I've already seen that resolution mismatch fix crop up in my search prior to posting this thread. It appears to be a separate issue to which that is a valid workaround with certain Intel drivers, or the like. I'm not sure if it affects me or not, but I run all my programs at native resolution, anyways. Though, perhaps it isn't as separate as I may imagine it to be.*censored*! I have the EXACT same issue on my Windows 8.1 64bit system since a week. It started absolutely out of nowhere. I can run Heaven benchmark without problem but if I play BF4 even though I have 8Gb and had a fixed pagefile on a separate hard drive, of 2Gb.. Afterburner would keep reporting almost 10Gb of "Ram+Pagefile" use and it seems like if it exceed 10Gb then I get that crash with the same error, wether I run in Crossfire "R9 280X" or not.

It's very annoying, I never had this before when I had a SLI of GTX670 and the first week I had my new 280X I didn't have any issues too. The game only use 2Gb of Vram out of 3. Seems like there's just a leak for no reason.

| |

Solve : Minecraft and Windows 8? |
Answer»

I play the game Minecraft on my laptop, and I enjoy playing multi-player games with it. I used to have a Toshiba laptop though I'm not sure what operating system it had. When I played on the Toshiba when I'd be moving in the game I could click just fine and it'd work. HOWEVER, I recently bought a Dell that uses Windows 8 and when I'm standing still in the game I can click and it'll work just fine. However, when I'm moving in the game (holding down one or two of the KEYS a, s, d, or w to do so) when I click the player doesn't respond to the click. Normally he'd swing the item in his hand but his hand doesn't move at all. The rest of the game works just fine, it's only that one aspect. I think it may have something to do with the mouse settings but I know nothing about computers so I'm not sure. How might one correct such a problem? There was a bug patch for game issues with Windows 8. Which may have actually been part of the Windows 8.1 upgrade.

I bought an ASUS Laptop with Windows 8 and had some issues with ( different game ) World of Warcraft controls which only happened when I was using a combination of keys on keyboard with mouse at the same time. I heard about Windows 8 having bugs with games with controls and that there was a patch that Microsoft released that fixed a known issue. I fully PATCHED Windows 8 and it was still acting up. I then upgraded to Windows 8.1 for free and still had issues.

I then tried a different USB mouse and still had the same issue with different brand mouse. With no CURE in sight to this issue, I downgraded to Windows 7 64-bit on this same laptop changing nothing else with it. Installed World of Warcraft and then fired up the game and the control issues were gone... YAY I can finally play the game without control problems.

It seems as though it may be more of a driver issue than Windows 8 or 8.1 issue though because I had friends in my guild who also were running Windows 8 with World of Warcraft and they didnt have these combination keyboard/mouse control issues when both were used at the same time.

So you can try performing all Microsoft updates and see if that fixes it. You can also check with Dell to see if there are any driver updates to PERFORM to fix for problems. You can also try upgrading to Windows 8.1 and see if that fixes it..... but in the end, the fix may be downgrading to Windows 7 like I had to do to fix the problem.I'm fairly certain this is a touchpad setting, such that it disables itself while you are typing. Purpose being to prevent the common problem where you will be typing away and then suddenly your wrist brushes the touchpad enough to register a tap-click and then you are suddenly typing somewhere else in the document.

On Windows 8 you can access this setting by pressing the Windows key, then type "touchpad" in the search. The first result should be "Choose whether to have a touchpad delay" and should bring you to a configuration page that allows you to set the delay to "None".

| |

Solve : Ordered Windows 8.1 - What Else Will I Need?? |
Answer»

I apologize for asking such an amateurish question. I want to install Windows 8.1 on my computer. I intend to replace my existing OS (Ubuntu-Linux) with Windows. I do not have any other Windows related discs at all. When I receive the "full version" of Windows, will I have everything I need to get on the internet so I can start downloading the other software (iTunes, MMO games etc.). Is there another disc I will need to buy? Does Windows send what I need all in the same package? I ordered it from Amazon and the description wasn't very detailed. It's been a long time since I ordered anything like this. You might need some device drivers such as audio, video, network adapter, etc. A visit to the website of the manufacturer of your computer to search for drivers for Windows 8 is generally a good step to take in situations like yours. If you do that before you install Windows, you'll be better prepared to install Windows and quickly get your SYSTEM running well. But, you should still open Windows Device Manager panel after installing Windows 8 along with any drivers you had already downloaded and INSTALLED to see whether all devices are working properly. Device Manager will flag any devices with driver issues by displaying a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in the triangle. The reason I switched to Windows 8.1 is because I was having continuous crashes and restarts with Windows 7 that was probably due to a bad driver update. This problem seemed to worsen day by day until finally I could no longer load Windows. I received the Windows 8.1 disc and it installed fine however the software that you access via the user interface that comes with Windows such as the video player, picture viewer etc would not open when I clicked the icons and did not run at all (I think that's separate from the problem I have now).

I installed my software which included: Bit Defender, Malwarebytes, iTunes, Steam gaming platform, 3 mmorpg games and SnagIt screen capture software. SHORTLY after this I experienced the same problem when I had Windows 7 which was a worsening series of crashes and restarts at startup that eventually MADE Windows unusable. Because this occurred even after changing to a more recent version of Windows, I am assuming it is a bad driver update. You gave me good advice when you suggested going to the Device Manager. I CHECKED it and everything was working properly. Gradually, over a couple weeks, Windows 8.1 eventually had the same issues as Windows 7 at startup (crashes and restarts) As of now, Windows 8.1 will open but hangs and eventually restarts. Clicking on a dialog box or icon will freeze the process and make it necessary to power off using the button.

The repair tool on the Windows disc functioned but could not solve the problem. so I went to a system restore point by using the Windows disc. This didn't change things either. Windows would seem to load and bring me to the desktop but the icons were not accessible. It was hanging then eventually crashing. I did not have time to get the exact error code because it disappeared before I could write it down. It was something like this: NO PAGE ERROR avc3.sys. After system restore, a "installing updates" message appeared. So it is probably reinstalling a bad update even though I changed my setting to disable auto-updating. The Bit Defender indicator showed a red warning that said it stopped checking for updates or something to that effect.

I am trying to remember what update I installed before this started. I have been only installing the "critical updates". I think the last one I installed was a security related update to the Silverlight movie player but it may have been something else. I have been installing these updates via the Bit Defender interface that informs me they are "critical".

| |

Solve : Where is the "Shut Down" button for Windows 8? |

If wireless, try an Ethernet cable for awhile to allow time to get familiar with using Windows 8 on the Internet.

Do either of you know how to browse the web with Windows 8? Hughesnet does not require a user name and password. I checked with them after her computer asked for that info. Where Windows 8 is concerned, I am green as grass so it was a matter of trial and error navigating my way through it. I did MISS the more centralized information that comes up with the START button on Windows 7 Pro. And, Alt/F4 is also a keyboard shortcut to close an open program. So, if a program is open and has focus when Alt/F4 is used, it will close the program, not shutdown Windows. A subsequent Alt/F4 could then be used to shutdown. Thank you all for your input. Sometimes I REALLY, REALLY miss my old 486 with Windows 3.0 Computers were simpler then. Solve : no control over CPU activityI? |
Answer»

I have recently acquired a new HP 2000 with windows 8 installed,a AMD E1-1200 APU with Radeon HD graphics 1.40GHz, 4.00 GB (3.60 usable) memory, and 64bit OS, x64based processor. I hope I have included the required information in order to deal with my problem easily. Now, the problem as best as I can describe it is that the CPU usage is off the charts no matter what I wish to do with this computer. I tried using the task manager to cipher out the bad actor with no positive results. It seems to recycle itself back to 99% on the CPU monitor. The number of processes and backgrounds are astoundingly high and I don't know why. My acer windows 7, which I still have, as never done this kind of act before. Any way, at this point, I just can't use my new laptop due to this problem. I have been helped from here before and was sincerely grateful as I will be for this situation of mine as well. Thank You and your time is greatly appreciated.
Welcome to CH. Lots of good volunteers here will try and help.
High CPU usage is NOT normal with Win 8. When idle it is about the same as windows 7 , unless something strange is going on.

You said new. How new? You need to take it back right away.
It may be hard to believe, but even the best makers of PCs have lemon once in awhile. It happens.

If it is new, .you must get in contact with the vendor or maker as soon as posible.
Which process us using the cpu?If it's new, it's under warranty. Call HP about this. They should help troubleshoot the problem. If they ask to remotely connect to your computer, I think I'd allow that in this case.

The culprit COULD be their software; HP installs some software on their computers. One of their programs/apps is HP Support Assistant. When I bought my HP laptop in EARLY March 2013, that software was causing some problems. I called HP. They had me uninstall it and download and install the latest version. That solved the problem.

As Allan mentioned, look in Task Manager and see what process is causing heavy consumption of CPU resources. Well, It seems to be the norton anti-virus with the most / highest cpu numbers. I have installed Iobit and Malwarebytes anti-virus and Iobit fighter2 , and system care6. What would be the best combination of security because norton will be uninstalled never to return? Thank youRecently acquired brand new ( clean ) or used ( could be malware on it from prior owner etc )?

Have you left the computer on to run through to the end of the CPU hogging process and come back to it later to find that its idling and ready for use?

This APU is not very POWERFUL at 1.4Ghz and I have seen slow APU's cause a computer like this to run SLOWER than death for SAY the first 5 to 10 minutes or longer if a virus scan starts and runs. I have avoided buying slow APU's because of what I have seen in the field working on them. They are designed to be low cost, power efficient, cool running, and unfortunately slow when it comes to APU's that are lower than 2Ghz in speed. I have seen some desktops with APU's that are decent gaming machines but they are not low cost laptops or computers with weak APUs.

I have an older laptop that runs about as slow as my friends newer APU laptop. Mine is a Dell Inspiron Celeron M 1.6Ghz running Windows 7 32 bit on 2GB RAM ( single-core ) and his is a ASUS AMD C30 APU 1.2Ghz on 2GB RAM also running Windows 7 32-bit. Both laptops you have to turn them on and walk away for a good 5 or 10 minutes as for the APU and CPU are busy getting Windows 7 and all services to their idle state in which the computer use is acceptable. Trying to do anything during this time when its still loading services, performing quick scans, etc will make for frustration and applications hang because the CPU and APU are both at 95-100%Quote from: tidas1118 on September 07, 2013, 02:00:20 PM

Well, It seems to be the norton anti-virus with the most / highest cpu numbers. It came with Norton Internet Security and it ran quite well. Norton even displayed its CPU usage right on its own main screen; this mirrored what Task Manager showed for Norton. I would have kept Norton when the 60 day free trial period expired if I were going to use a paid antivirus app. But, I installed avast Free Antivirus, which I had been using on my Windows 7 PC.

I had an issue with HP Support Assistant, one of the HP programs installed when I bought the laptop. Solve : Help: Recent Build, HDMI Connection to LG-TV, No Audio? |

Quote

Drivers should all be up to date, as I've recently updated everything. Also, only using Windows 8, not 8.1.

There is a HDMI Audio Driver for this card through nVidia. I'd verify you have latest driver. As referenced here: HTTP://www.tomshardware.com/forum/350326-28-sound-issue-hdmi-output-nvidia-audio-driver

Thinking your card may be using a driver that doesnt have the audio driver portion to it maybe. Just a guess. If you have another device that can take a HDMI input to test audio, I'd try that out too to rule out TV issue. I also heard something a long time ago about some HDMI cables being problematic for use with both Audio/Video/Remote Control Data streams. Looking on google trying to dig up info on that, but if you have a HDMI cable to try in place of this you can try that too.

This below is not windows 8, but windows 7 with similar issue and they found issue which may be same with your win 8 machine config.

http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-637759-no-sound-on-lcd-tv-with-hdmi-cable-windows-7

| |

Solve : Locked out of computer; Windows 8? |
Answer»

I use an HP laptop that has Simplepass (swipe your finger and it automatically remembers passwords). I downloaded Windows 8 and my simplepass would not work. I uninstalled the current simplepass drivers I had to reinstall the correct version of simplepass for Windows 8. Before I could reactivate/download the new simple pass, I walked away from my computer and it locked. Simplepass was the only way I had into my computer. I never had a real password that I typed in. So now it is prompting me for my password, but I never created one. It gives me the option to use the fingerprint option (simplepass), but since I unistalled it obviously it does not work. I cannot get into my computer. What should I do?

Thanks!!Obviously you have access to another computer. So as is often the case when using a program specific password that needs to be changed (or has been forgotten) there is NORMALLY a protocol with the service provider (in this case simplepass) that once you jump through their security process hoops you should be able to be reinstated. When it turns on, it says press esc to start mode. Then I click startup mode, but safe mode is not an option. I am not that familiar with safe mode.
