Solve : Windows Works?

Answer»

If the issue is lack of install CD for the programs, there is another possible workaround. Not elegant, but functional. It requires you have a license KEY for the older OS and a install CD for the older OS.

The is called a "Hack", but it is not contrary to the copyright and EULA. If the old computer is not usable, and if you have a valid product key, Thee is a painful way to port the older OS onto you new computer and make a dual-boot system. You need a spare hard drive to do some testing to see if it will work for you, In fact, two spare hard drives. you need a backup also.
In general, GETTING an old hard drive is cheaper than t getting another computer by far.

Remember., I said this is a "Hack" and you are better off if you can find the install CDs for the programs. If you have the license key for a bit of software, it is legal to install it using a CD you BORROW from a member of .you local computer club. The big issue is if you are the owner of a license key for the software.

Now as for the "Hack". You install the older OS on another parson. Get is to work. Slave the old drive. make a backup of the Old OS from he old drive. Now do a restore from the backup to the new install of the old OS on the new computer. It will fail to boot right. Now repair the thing with the OS CD.
I said it was a "Hack". Wanda go for it.? Don't blame you if you don't like the "Hack". I don't either. In think it is easier to repair the old computer of replica it.

Otherwise, most programs must be install into an OS. Few exceptions. The dual-boot "Hack" is a last resort.
Will there be any compatibility issues? If so, what can be done? THANKS for your help! Solve : Documents folder has changed, can't get access?

Answer»

I tried to load a file into MS Word from my Documents folder. I navigated to the folder with Windows Explorer and it appeared that there was only one file in there: desktop.ini. I checked the folder properties and it shows up as a system folder. Solve : Speed up Windows 8 on netbook?

Answer»

I installed Windows 8 on my wife's netbook. It came with Windows 7, so from what Microsoft said, it was supposed to run Windows 8 decently cause it was made for Windows 7. After a month of using it, Windows 8 is very slow to resume from sleep, takes FOREVER to type in log in password, and even with no programs running, it takes 15+ seconds to open My Computer. I does not have recovery partition. Can you suggest me anything? In other words, you had a warning that something was wrong and nyou ndecided to try Windows 8. In general, installing a new OS is not the best way to isolate a possible hardware issue.

Frankly, the best recommendation is to get another hard drive and try to install the same OS you had before. It does not have to be a new drive, just one that works. The failure rate of Hard drives is not easy to determine. Sometimes they go for years. Solve : going back to Windows 7?

Very few of those I can find bulleted out Are what people have been complaining about. The two things people have been complaining about are:

1. Lack of the Start Menu. This hasn't been "fixed". The Start Menu was replaced with the Start Screen and it's here to stay. Others have said they miss the Start Button (Which is weird because most of those same people actually miss the start Menu, not the Button). So they attached an image to what used to be the hot-tracked start screen button.

2. It's different.

Can't really address this. The number of people complaining for the sake of complaining, suggesting the use of aftermarket tools to "fix" perceived deficiencies, etc. is astronomical. Examples are easy to come by. "Fixes" for Windows 95 that set progman.exe as the shell to "fix" Windows 95; "Fixes" for Windows XP to remove the "stupid" default Start Menu and replace it with the "more sane" one from windows 9x; "Fixes" for Windows Vista/7's menu to make it look like XP's Stupid default, etc. Given the trend and lack of any objective information, I'm forced to conclude, personally, that the noise being made about win8 is no different.

In fact, 8.1 could be considered the same as 6.1; Windows 7 made token changes and didn't even address any of the alleged 'problems' of Windows Vista; in the same way, Windows 8.1 is much the same. Token UI changes that don't actually address many of the issues but serve to disarm detractors. People didn't complain that Windows 8 didn't have heavy integration with Skydrive. People didn't complain that Windows 8 didn't include IE11. The only two that tangentially address complaints about Windows 8 are the option to Start win8 at the desktop, and giving the already present start screen button a logo. (arguably, aggregate search makes search more semantically compatible with Previous releases too).

Additionally, the reason these features were added is the same reason that Program Manager stuck around on installation media for so long. Some people don't like it. But whether people like something at first glance is wholly unrelated to whether they will like it when they actually use it, and it's also unrelated to whether that new something is actually better.I highly recommend the Start Menu 8 from iobit.com . Just be sure to uncheck any of their demo software during the installation. Their W8 Start Menu will allow you to bypass the Metro screen all together.

Why on earth M$ would remove their Hallmark "Start Button" is simply beyond reason! Fortunately there are developers who have created a Start Menu app - there are about 10 on the Internet now and I have tried several of them. Iobit's is my favorite, give it a try.

My prediction on W8 is pretty much in par with Windows Millennium which got brushed under the rug soon after it was released before XP. Vista had it's huge problems in the beginning but once SP1 was released it became a better operating system.

In both Vista and 7 the UAC can be completely deactivated. The UAC is a farce IMHO and simply ads annoyance to both systems. Just go to the Control Panel/User Accounts and disable the UAC. You'll enjoy your computer much more without it.
Quote from: SuperTweaker on July 15, 2013, 06:41:37 AM
I highly recommend the Start Menu 8 from iobit.com

Yes. Lot's of aftermarket software is cashing in on people's insecurities. Sort of like Norton's Desktop cashed in on people when the Start menu was added. Why iobit's product and not Classic Shell or StarDock's Start8, though?

Quote
Their W8 Start Menu will allow you to bypass the Metro screen all together.

Booting to the Standard desktop is available in Windows 8.1.

Quote
Why on earth M$ would remove their Hallmark "Start Button" is simply beyond reason!
The Start button was never removed. In 8.0 it had no image and acted more as a hot corner to get to the start screen. 8.1 adds the button back, it still goes to the start screen. Most people complaining about the loss of the start menu are either weird people that never actually realized that the Search feature was a million times better and faster than wandering through a billion Start menu folders to find an application. (I press windows key, type 2012, and press enter to start Visual Studio 2012 on both Win7 and Win8.

There is no arguing that this is faster than going Start->All Programs->Navigating down to Microsoft Visual Studio 2012, and choosing Visual Studio 2012. Same for applications like photoshop. Pretty much anything on the start menu is accessible via a quick search, so the only thing lost is when you don't know what you are starting.

In which case, why the heck are you in the start menu?

Quote
My prediction on W8 is pretty much in par with Windows Millennium which got brushed under the rug soon after it was released before XP.
ME was an interim release on par with Visual Basic 3.0 in terms of releasing what they had before a major rearchitecture. In this case it was the last release of the 9x line.

I've yet to find any evidence that ME had any particularly major issues, certainly none it didn't share with Windows 98SE. Most problems with Windows ME seem to revolve around the design that avoids MS-DOS mode, or, most likely, problems people had with OEM systems that can preinstalled with Windows ME.

Quote
Vista had it's huge problems in the beginning but once SP1 was released it became a better operating system.
Neat. What changes in SP1 made it better, specifically? What portions of SP1 are single-handed responsible for changing Vista from Bad to good? Just curious.

Quote
In both Vista and 7 the UAC can be completely deactivated. The UAC is a farce IMHO and simply ads annoyance to both systems. Just go to the Control Panel/User Accounts and disable the UAC. You'll enjoy your computer much more without it.

And you have just expressed how ignorant you are.

UAC is downright critical and addresses the biggest issues that existed in Windows up to that time, which was the fact that the default setup not only ran under administrator permissions, but it also made administering a Limited User Account setup difficult.

Trojans are simply the 99.9% of how Windows systems get infected.

On XP, every user is an administrator. the important thing is that every application they run has full administrative privileges. So if that super happy screensaver is a trojan, that malicious code can do whatever it wants to the system. Direct disk access to write to the boot sector, changing system files. It can even install a service to run under the Local System Account, giving it even more free range over the systems internals.

Now, I don't know about anybody else, but I don't see any good reason to give those programs you run everyday full administrative privileges. Pre-Vista, Windows support for LUA existed, but was really only something that was worth the effort on Domains; it required a lot of fiddling about with knobs, dials, GPEdit, etcetera. for XP you could, for example, create non-admin accounts, but if you needed to do any admin tasks you had to log off and log back on, making it a gigantic pain.

UAC tries to address this. When UAC is enabled, when you log on, your account's Security Identifier is stripped of all the administrative privileges. Any Application REQUIRING those privileges will give you a UAC prompt (if they are written properly) or fail altogether (if they aren't) in the latter case you would need to "Run as Administrator" but you still get the UAC prompt. The point is to make sure that all the applications that run with administrative privileges have your permission to do so.

This also mitigates the problem for even those applications you might otherwise trust; in XP since everything ran with admin privileges, a security problem in Firefox, or Chrome, or Word, or Excel, or Internet Explorer, could take over your machine. A simple oversight in a javascript parser could be all that a malicious programmer needs to install a Remote Access Trojan on your system, without you even knowing it. UAC prevents this because the browser isn't running with admin privileges, so the damage can only extend to what your stripped user token is capable of, which for any sort of malicious software is usually pretty useless.

Vista's only problem with UAC is that people got so used to the prompt that they unconditionally said yes anyway, making the function useless. Win7 improved it and added more options so that more of the prompts were "important" decisions, mostly for when you ran a executable that required admin permissions for whatever reason. Then you could decide whether you were willing to hand over those abilities. UAC is sort of like a gynecologists assistant that makes sure the gynecologist (the software program) doesn't do anything inappropriate without your permission.

The fact that there was so much hate against UAC is proof that the vast majority of the userbase simply doesn't understand the difference. They don't see it as additional security, they see it as additional inconvenience, and they don't understand that to get the latter you are going to have to put up with some of the former, simply by virtue of the way it works.

False security? rofllmao! Answer»

This is how many people feel about Windows 8.
http://youtu.be/WTYet-qf1jo Absolutely everything stated is complete nonsense coming from somebody who evidently only used the OS for 10 seconds. Arguing that "A lot of people think X, so it is the correct response" is a Ad populum fallacy.Denial is strong by anyone and wants something different than what the older generation is using. W8 is not a good operating system, period.

@BC It appears that you and I will have to agree to disagree on many topics. Quote from: SuperTweaker on July 15, 2013, 06:03:40 AM

Denial is strong by anyone and wants something different than what the older generation is using.

This sentence makes no sense. How does denial "want" anything?

Quote
W8 is not a good operating system, period.
Begging the question. You cannot just assert nonsense and tell everybody that disagrees they are in denial. When valid refutations are provided you need to actually respond to them, not reiterate your ORIGINAL points and ignore it; and if refutations are invalid, you need to state why.

Quote
@BC It appears that you and I will have to agree to disagree on many topics.

No. I will not agree to disagree. I will not eat up nonsense and pretend it's is Chocolate cake. saying "I guess we need to agree to disagree" is an incredibly lazy tactic and is among the pantheon of self-defeating and dishonest statements made in lieu of an actual counterpoint.

It's lazy because all it is is mutual recognition of disagreement. But the fact is that the existence of a conversation, debate, or argument sort of shows that there is already mutual recognition of disagreement on the subject, so it's entirely moot. It's only valid for subjective cases.

It could be argued that whether somebody likes or dislikes an Operating System or Piece of software is subjective. I could agree with that.

But No. You decided it was an objective truth :
Quote
W8 is not a good operating system, period.
And that, my friend, is where we have to disregard attempts to acquiesce the existence of an argument by "agreeing to disagree" because now you are using that term not to indicate the obvious presence of mutual disagreement, but instead to try to say "we are both equally right and both equally wrong". It's a dodge, and is nothing more than the most ludicrous type of relativistic equivocation imaginable.

And to make matters worse, you aren't saying "we agree to disagree" at all; you are in fact saying that I am outright wrong about something. For example, I rather like Windows 8; I certainly find it no worse than Windows 7 for my purposes, and rather like some of the changes made. You however have unilaterally declared, in an objective fashion, that "W8 is not a good operating System period" And I'm calling you out. EXTRAORDINARY claims require extraordinary evidence. Prove your case that Windows 8 is not a good operating system, and do not deflect the argument with subjective relativistic nonsense. Present citable, reproducible information about how the OS works compared to previous versions that provide an objective measure that the new one is in all cases less suited than the previous implementation. Otherwise, your claims are nonsense assertions that could be buried in a matchbox if given an enema. I refuse to pretend that a poorly-argued position which in this case started with an exceptional if difficult to parse ad-hominem against anybody that would disagree, holds sufficient validity to even request being put on the level by agreeing to disagree. I do of course know people that do not like WIndows 8. The difference is that they fully acknowledge the subjective nature of the discussion, and they fully realize that it could very well be their own personal experience and what they are used to influencing their conclusion. Your statement here however- Objectively declaring that "W8 is not a good operating system, period" is NONSENSE because you've backed it up with absolutely nothing. Even a subjective argument at least has subjective anecdotes. You've done nothing but assert something, provided absolutely no reasoning behind the claim, made a mild if not entirely sensical personal attack ("Denial is strong by anyone and wants something different than what the older generation is using.") and then essentially asked to "agree to disagree".

No. I will not.I have to agree with BC on this - The reason many people hate Windows 8 is due to it being a big change from 7 and other previous editions. When I first tried 8, I absolutely hated it, swapped between 7 and 8 3 times before I forced myself to use 8 - After using it for a while I got used to it's differences and now honestly say that I actually prefer it to previous editions. You can't just use something for a short period of time and instantly declare that it's terrible, some things just need getting used to!

And I'm not a "Microsoft Fanboy" in fact, I use Linux as my day-to-day OS yet WHENEVER I do use Windows, I definitely prefer using 8 to 7. When I first heard of Windows XP and saw screenies and the changes that were being made, I hated it. I avoided it for years.

When I finally upgraded the windows 98SE machine I was using to XP (I forget why I decided to do so), I continued to dislike it.

The first thing I did was change everything to be as close to Windows 98SE as possible. I disabled all Luna themes, and I set the start menu to "Classic". One may strike a parallel to this with Windows 8 and people using aftermarket Start-Menu tools. Over time I came to discover that the newer start Menu actually had several benefits such as pinned applications, so I switched to that style. I also realized that despite my misgivings, painting a few bitmaps was not the "memory hog" that I originally chided it as, and switched to the XP Theme (Silver if memory serves, but eventually Royale Noir).
What changed with Windows XP from the time I originally used it to the time that I came to use it as my everyday OS? Absolutely nothing. The only thing that changed was me, and the only thing that changed me was cold hard facts, and I like to think that is the only thing that changes my mind about things now. Which is why I look at new Operating Systems and ways of doing things not with scorn, but with wonder. Windows Vista got the same treatment, since I had come to realize the "error of my ways" to turn a phrase. I bought a laptop with Vista preinstalled and had some issues with it, but I reinstalled Vista fresh and found that experience about a bajillion times more favourable, thus I learned that manufacturers were probably to blame for a lot of the complaints. I was thus quite quickly aware of how blatantly misinformed a lot of the anti-Vista posts and opinions really were. Then I watched a dramatic shift as those same people said how great Windows 7 was, and how it fixed everything wrong with it, when it hardly changed anything- it was just a re-release so that people could like Windows 7 and still hate Vista rather than admit they were wrong about Vista, because they are pretty much the same OS with a few tweaks- certainly nothing worth changing the minds of millions of people.

When I first learned of Windows 8, I had my concerns. However I also realize that the people creating teh software in question are not stupid. Despite what any idiot youtuber may try to say, they are not professional designers. I'm not a professional designer. But Microsoft has a lot of them. I considered that the changes were done for a good reason; rather than dismissing the changes as being done out of malice and responding in kind, I assumed they had very good usability reasons for the changes, and did my best to embrace those changes and merge them into my workflow.

Now I have no issue moving back and forth between Win7 and Win8. Eve nin Win7 I found the win8 UI style useful, as some of it carries over in Office 2013.

I think maybe some of the problem is that while most such changes require a bit of effort, relearning, etc. people expect the improvements to be for free; or, they expect simply incremental improvements to what was already present. The problem is that such an expectation only leads to a messy System that has a bunch of features and capabilities stapled on, while not actually addressing the usability concerns of previous versions.

This isn't to say that such attempts at improving usability are always good. For example, Office 2000 introduced "Smart menus", which had numerous UI oversights that Microsoft silently acknowledged by removing that FEATURE (or at least disabling it by default) in later versions past Office XP.

In order to really understand the direction, you have to understand the problems with the Start Menu as implemented.

Now, as we all know, it was added in Windows 95. The design purpose was to make the components and installed programs easier to access while also centralizing a lot of thee system to a system-based menu. In this goal it succeeded. Detractors claimed that Program Manager did that just fine. Arguably, they weren't wrong, but the Taskbar was quite a novel introduction and made Windows computing easier, since running programs were always visible. It was like "Cool-Switch" (Alt+Tab) being available at all times. And the Start Menu was sort of like a "program manager flyout".

Naturally this paradigm pretty much stuck through to XP. XP reworked the start menu a bit to try to improve usability and of course add some glitz.

Vista is where we see the paradigm start to break down as computing changes. With massive hard drive we started to be capable of installing hundreds of applications. With XP and earlier having this many applications installed absolutely destroys the ease of use of the start menu, as the menu is forced to either create multiple columns, or scroll.

Thus Vista's Search was created. It was more or less an extension of available Desktop Extension tools (Windows Desktop Search, I believe) but built into the Start menu. IMO this is the single biggest usability improvement ever added to an OS. It found it's way into other systems like Linux Distributions too.

Very few people that use Windows 7 probably use the All Programs Menu. and if they do, they are going slower than they could be. Start Search is usually the way to go.

So where does win8 come in. well, it's a two-pronged approach to changing technology. First off, it's obvious that Touch-screens are coming around and going to be on desktops in the fairly near future, so it makes sense to start designing in a way that is compatible with that technology. Additionally, it addresses some obvious problems with the Start Menu architecture. Since it is most productive when used as Search, it is limiting that the results are confined to the menu itself. The Start Screen shows these results in full screen, allowing for far better utilization of the available space for both changing search options as well as organizing results.

That is really all there is to it. The Start Screen is a better Start Menu.Do you really have to write an essay each time you post? rofl! No one wants to read all that rhetoric. It's actually interesting because Windows 7 was cited as a success because of it's very open Beta, but Windows 8 had an open Preview and unlike Windows 7, people claim that it's "failing". Based on the aforementioned sales it's hard to really substantiate that, but there is no doubt that opinions on the OS are mixed. I'd put them about the same as Vista about the same time after it's release. The Vista hate didn't really go away until Windows 7 was released, and Win7 was really popular. It's probable that Windows 7's popularity was actually just a spring-back effect from Vista hate. Additionally, people who had from the beginning decried Vista as being- for example- "Criminal" couldn't easily reverse course on the issue, so they avoided using it or only used it with malice, in an attempt to avoid liking it and bring on cognitive dissonance. Windows 7 allowed those users to like everything they liked in Vista without admitting they were wrong. Eg, positive Windows 7 reviews after a scathing Vista review wouldn't raise as many questions as a positive Vista review following a scathing one.Quote from: Geek-9pm on July 15, 2013, 05:40:02 PM
The point is that if people can not use it, they will not.

That's an overly simplistic statement. People buying new computers get Win 8 now, so what do you think they going to do with their new computer if their initial reaction to Win 8 is one of frustration? If they are smart, they'll get some help and learn how to use it. And, once they get on the right track, many will change their initial feelings and gain a much more positive opinion about it.

I watched the first 8 minutes of the video in the 1st post here. It simply reflects ignorance and stupidity. It's an absurd, silly rant by an idiot. Several times, he said the Weather app opened and he had no idea how it opened. And, then he says he could not figure out how to close it. His ignorance is even more amazing in light of his claimed knowledge of many OS. Did he not think about getting a reference to tell him HOW to close an app that is opened in the Start screen? Unbelievable! If you listen to his ranting, on the video at about 40 seconds in, you will realize that he is just another out of work blogger advertising his work to anyone that will view the video.

Solve : Should I Convert Now or Wait until April 2014??

Answer»

Quote

Because it is a incremental improvement over the previous generation of software.

BC_P,

That might be true of other companies but this is Microsoft we're talking about, remember their Vista fiasco. Microsoft's strength is in marketing, not technology. True, Windows is the dominant OS in the world in terms of market share, but do you honestly believe that it is superior to Linux? And while you say it is an, "incremental improvement over the previous generation of software", that is really a subjective opinion on your part. While you might have had a positive experience with Win 8, others have difficulties with it. Just cos something is new doesn't mean that it's better, especially when it comes to Microsoft. Surely, Vista was not an improvement over xp. Quote from: carlito on August 30, 2013, 09:50:19 AM
That might be true of other companies but this is Microsoft we're talking about, remember their Vista fiasco.

What about Vista? You mean the part where Vista (NT6) was received rather critically, but then Microsoft was able to release almost exactly the same Operating System as "Windows 7" and it was heralded as "fixing" Vista, even though it made very few actual changes?

Quote
but do you honestly believe that it is superior to Linux?
Of course it is. For one thing it actually supports ACLs and has proper FileSystem Security, which requires you to install SELinux with Linux distributions. I like the part where Linux still cannot properly resume USB devices when you wake the system up. This is because evidently they only skimmed the USB documentation.

Further irony: The Linux folks behind this were claiming it was "broken hardware".

At the same time, Microsoft already had a knowledge base article about that exact issue with Windows Vista and in that article they readily admit that the issue was in fact Vista not waiting long enough according to the USB interface specifications, causing the device to disconnect.

*nix in general continued to blame the device. Until a few days ago when Sarah Sharp has essentially said, "oh whoops, we were wrong all this time".

I could go ON and ON about this. The fact is that I've argued with Linux zealots ALL OVER the internet and very few of them can really come up with any real positives that Linux distributions have over Windows. The worst of the reasons is usually regarding Security. Linux is not "more secure" than windows by any measurement. The fact is that Linux is not a viable target, so NOBODY bothers. Not to mention that the same things that keep Linux from being a viable desktop target for Software development also keeps it from being a viable target for software with malicious intentions. Even the game developers that do "support" linux only do so half-heartedly. The Indie Game Bundle usually includes games that support Linux, but each one I've gotten maybe one out of the 4 games that claim Linux support to even work, and it involved rather good familiarity with yum and apt-get to get working. They are hodgepodge pieces of software built like a Jigsaw puzzle into systems and the only distributions that have been able to get any real traction have had huge amounts of money thrown at them and actual commercial interests vested into them (Red hat, Ubuntu). Basic functionality doesn't work half the time, requiring you to write scripts to get basic functionality such as automatic Wallpaper switching, which you get for free elsewhere. meanwhile, the APIs that you have to access to actually script that functionality may as well not even be documented. When I wrote the script to do that for Mint 12 All I could find was information on components that apparently didn't exist in Mint 12 anymore, because they changed the shape of all the puzzle pieces. I highly doubt that script would still work on the current version of Mint. Did I mention that there is never a valid upgrade path? Of course not. Everybody is totally fine with completely wiping their existing install to update to the latest version, or risk making their system unbootable by manually pointing their package manager/update manager at the repository for the latest version.

On the desktop, Linux is simply garbage. Web and Shell Servers benefit from it pretty good though- being able to use yum/apt-get to setup apache/mysql and php/python quickly and easily is pretty useful, even though you can rest assured that your distro's repository is out of date.

Quote
And while you say it is an, "incremental improvement over the previous generation of software", that is really a subjective opinion on your part.
no, nothing subjective about it. I wasn't talking usability wise, but generally speaking. The improvements to Windows 8 over Windows 7 are analogous to the improvements to Vista from Windows XP. Like Vista, Windows 8 is getting a critical reception because people are stupid and don't know what they want, as well as simply having different preferences. This doesn't dismiss the improvements made. That's why MS is coming out with 8.1, which people are already saying "fixes everything wrong with Windows 8"; just like Windows 7 allegedly fixed everything wrong with Vista, even though what REALLY happened was hardware and software vendors who were the root cause of most issues had time to catch up to the latest implementations of Driver Models and UI frameworks. It's probably going to be the same story with Windows 8.1.

I really don't need to look much further than Vista to see how stupid Windows 8 haters are. They are the exact same set of folks, in most cases, that gave Vista flak for altogether stupid reasons, and then turned around and Said Win7 "fixed" those problems, when Windows 7 was almost exactly the same system, but because it was the first MS Operating System to be given an Open Beta- and perhaps most importantly the hardware and software available for running on Windows 7 was designed by developers that had time to learn the new system, whereas with Vista you had Vista Drivers that were rushed out, you had Vista Versions of Software that was rushed out, and altogether you created a software environment that ended up being problematic, not because of Vista, but because of the software not being given time to be tested and acclimatized to Vista.

Quote
While you might have had a positive experience with Win 8
I never said I did, to be fair. I've just not had to really do anything different. In particular I like how they removed the Start Menu, because honestly that was a pile of vestigial garbage- (let me explain).

Why was the Vista/7 start menu vestigial garbage? The All Programs menu was so unusable it may as well have not existed. With XP you would drill down through a hierarchal menu to find what you needed, which was still ridiculous- but with Vista and 7 they made this even more ridiculous by putting it all into a single treeview confined into this small box in the corner of the screen, meanwhile, NONE of the program folders have icons, instead they are all folders- unlike the XP start menu which would display icons. The reason for this was because The All Programs Menu was only around for people to use that had gotten used to XP's dystrophied methodology, which itself came from the vestiges of Windows 9x which basically had to use a heirarchal layout as an improvement over the one-layer-deep Program Manager, and systems didn't have the oomph to just let you index your entire PC and search them; but with Vista they did, so you could use Start->Search.

Honestly, when I find somebody that uses Vista/7/8 regularly and doesn't use the Search features, they are simply going to end up being less productive and slower. When you use the All Programs Menu, you don't just wander through and "Browse" the programs you have- you know what you want to start. So somebody decided, "Why not just let them type what they want?" And thus Start->Search. (It's also been integrated into numerous Linux distributions, because clearly Microsoft has no idea how to innovate and Linux and OSX wanted in on their non-innovations).

Quote
others have difficulties with it.
And some people have difficulty walking down alleyways, but you won't see me picketing to make alleyways wider for them.

Quote
Just cos something is new doesn't mean that it's better
Agreed. However I think the corrolary would be to argue that just because it's new doesn't mean it is not better, which seems to be the stance upon which your arguments are based.

Quote
especially when it comes to Microsoft.
How do you figure this?

Quote
Vista was not an improvement over xp.
Surely, it was. I find it hard to find reasons how it's not.

First, XP was released in 2001, and it was released as again, an incremental improvement to the previous systems, as well as merging the consumer and NT products into one; a NT-based Windows for Home systems. We had that system for 5 years, and it did not age well. And at the start it wasn't like it was received well anyway. People complained about everything- they complained about the new Start Menu, they complained about the default theme (what was up with that anyway? It almost makes 3.1's "Hot dog stand" look tame), they complained about the Luna Theme Manager, and how it took resources, and they complained about how it was now based on NT. whine complain whine, and complain some more.

And yet, fast forward to today, and there are people heralding XP as some pinnacle of OS excellence. In particular, those that try to argue that Vista was not an improvement. it was. Objectively. There is absolutely no way to say that "Usability and functionality was not improved in Vista compared to XP" Here is why.

1. The Start Menu. Again, same thing as before. the XP Start Menu was abysmal, just like the Start Menu's before it. I find it hard to believe that I not only was perfectly willing to launch an application by SPENDING 20 seconds drilling down through an animated heirarchial menu, but that I actually didn't see a problem with it. Golly, I want to start Paint- Start->All Programs->Accessories->Paint. (Arguably you could memorize the executable names, and hope it was available as an apppath or at least on the system path). With Vista/7/8, I press the windows key and type paint. Then press enter. With XP, let's say you installed a soccer game. Damned if you remember what it was called though- I know it's in that start menu somewhere... Hmm, which company made it? Where did I put the Box for it anyway, I'm sure that will say who made it... So you end up trying to find this software product by simply searching through your All programs Menu, expanding each Company folder, seeing if it's in there, backing out, looking in another... Man, if only there was a way to automate this Searching in some way- like perhaps a small window shown on the Start Menu, which you could use to specify that you want to search. That would sure be a usability improvement, and an objectively good one...

Oh wait what? Vista added that objective usability improvement, that let's you actually find what you want by simply telling the PC what you want? If I want ot play that Soccer game by some Company who's name I never remember, I don't have to make a desktop icon or start drilling down and searching through every All Programs Entry... I just press the Windows Key and type Soccer. Oh, look, there it is.

And while it's nice to have 4GB or 8GB of RAM, it's a shame that XP doesn't really make use of that extra RAM on it's own, instead only doling out the Memory to applications through a mapped Virtual Address space. If only there was an advanced File Cache that analyzed your usage patterns and tried to prefetch Disk data into Memory before you needed it, and kept it readily available through a memory read rather than having to hit the disk. Man, that sort of fetching capability would sure be super! Oh? That was in Vista too? Egads! It's almost as if they were seeking to improve things or something!

And boy, I sure liked listening to Music on my XP machine, but I sometimes played games too and I had to fiddle with the Game Sound menu and tweak my sound player so I could get the right mixing. Man, if only there was a way to CONTROL Volume on a per-application basis. What? Vista added that too? And it revised the Sound subsystem so that crappy Sound Drivers couldn't cause a blue-screen since they ran in User mode, and only the Sound Mixer Component ran in Kernel mode? Geez it's almost as if they did usability studies or read the Microsoft Connect submissions!

XP's LUA was crappy and pretty much not really usable- First nobody used it, because they just used the default administrator account, and second even those that knew LUA was a good idea couldn't be bothered with the hassle, even with Fast-User switching it was still too much trouble- I want to install an application- Darn, no permission... I guess I need to log off, log in as admin, install it, log off, and log back into my limited account! Would be cool if the Operating System had some capability that would allow me to run a Limited User Account, but have a secure prompt of some sort when I needed administrator permissions, and then at that point it could run that thing in that administrator context.

Oh what? That is what UAC does? Amazing. (Speaking of UAC, UAC is one of the first things Vista haters will point at- apparently they don't realize that the entire reason that XP is such a RAT's nest is because absolutely everything runs in the context of the administrator account and has full control over everything. That little piece of javascript that was able to use a Firefox Buffer overflow vulnerability to execude arbitrary machine code in the context of the Firefox process sure loved having administrator permissions, since it made it so much easier for it to install that backdoor as a service under the LocalSystem Account.
Why was Windows 7 successful, where Windows Vista wasn't? I sort of explained that. Win7 was merely a set of UI tweaks and more or less a re-release of Windows Vista, with a new name to abandon the mental baggage and negative mindshare that "Windows Vista" had accumulated. I find it hard to believe people when they say that "Windows 7 fixes the problems of Vista" when all I see are some Window management additions, a slightly wider Search Results in the start menu, and the Superfetch starting with a lower priority from the OOBE.

Quote
but do you honestly believe that it is superior to Linux?, Of course it is

Wow BC_P, I didn't expect such a long winded, almost knee-jerk, defensive reaction to my simple points. Your argument about Linux being garbage on the desktop is simply due to your own biasness towards Windows. I admit that I've never tried Win 8 and I doubt that you have ever tried Linux. I do like Linux a lot, but I don't consider myself a Linux zealot. I use both Linux and Win 7. But I still maintain that Windows' strength is due to marketing rather than any technical superiority over Linux. Linux has a much higher learning curve than Windows simply because it gives you more control over the machine. It is geared more towards high-end users, geeks as they say, rather than Windows is. Yes, Windows is dominant in the desktop and laptop market but that is due to Microsoft's marketing strength. However, in the server market, Linux is king. Almost 90% of all Internet servers in the world run on Linux, due to the fact that it is less prone to crashes than Windows.

One point about Win 8 is that it was basically designed for the tablet market in order to compete with the Android OS, which dominates that market and also the smart phones market. It is an interesting point that Android is a Linux variant. Quote from: carlito on August 30, 2013, 01:26:49 PM
is simply due to your own biasness towards Windows.

Right. It is totally not at all based on personal experience from running Linux for several years (Slackware, Gentoo, Mint, and Fedora, though I can't recall the order I actually used them. I recall Gentoo's tenure being rather short, though. (almost felt like a waste after going through all that compilation, really).

Quote
I use both Linux and Win 7.
So do I; Currently my Desktop runs Windows 7, and my Laptop Runs Windows 8.1. The laptop Previous ran whatever Linux distribution I was experimenting with at the time. My arguments against Linux are not "knee jerk" reactions because I'm steeped in the Windows concepts, but are based on personal experience through a variety of distributions, as well as personal attempts at making a piece of software that works on a variety of different distributions without requiring that recipients compile from source, which is practically impossible. It's great for people that like to tweak and fiddle with configurations, and settings, writing scripts and small programs to customize your experience, etc. But at some point I realized I was spending a lot more time making Linux work than I should need to. I also got bit on more than one occasion by the lacklustre power management facilities and particularly the aforementioned USB disconnection bug, though data loss was minimal. The best usage I got out of the laptop when it had Linux installed aside from basic Browsing capabilities (using Firefox version 3, which the package manager said was up to date DESPITE this being around the time Firefox 14 was released...), was installing a MySQL database and using that for software testing.

Quote
But I still maintain that Windows' strength is due to marketing rather than any technical superiority over Linux.
On what do you base this, though? How can you maintain a stance in a discussion/argument/debate (whichever you want to call this ) without presenting evidence supporting that stance?

But let's look at it. Of Course Microsoft is a company that is run by sales and marketing. This is not unique to Microsoft. Do you think Google hired Eric Schmidt because of his mastery of Page Ranking or Map Reduce? Did Apple re-integrate Jobs to the board of directors because of his contributions to RFC1553? All large computer corporations are run by these sorts of people. Sun was run by Scott McNealy, who followed his family's tradition of selling Big Iron. His "Big Iron" was simply in Computers, not cars. Sub wasn't run by Bill Joy; or by Andy Bechtolsheim, or Vinod Khosla. Why not? Because as a company, without sales, you are dead.

The bigger issue is that in terms of this particular argument, there are two cretinous assumptions. The first is that the Sales/LOB portion of the business makes any real decisions about the software; they don't. They make business decisions. Usually these are far removed from the software itself. The guys in charge don't care if it follows POSIX standards or anything like that. They delegate. Their talent is in being able to find talent and delegate tasks to that talent in a way that let's all those involve contribute using their particular strength. If you get crappy software from a company, it's not because of salesman. There is no correlation between the number of salesman in a company and the quality of the product being produced. You get crappy software not for these reasons. When you get crappy software, it's because it's written by people who don't know what they are doing. eg: Sarah Sharp and Greg Kroah-Hartman, who are very likely EXAMPLES of the Peter Principle in action. Sometimes the product ends up being a WordPerfect, or an Excel, or an Early Netscape. More often, it turns into a rushed, botched Job... because they don't know what they are doing, and they don't know how to find and apply people that do know what they are doing; either because they've become a victim of Dunning Kruger (eg. Mark Shuttleworth), or because they have the social skills of Richard Stallman (eg Richard Stallman).

The secret to good software isn't even a secret. You simply find the right number of the right people with the right capabilities, in the right environment,(including testing and other boring stuff)- and you'll end up with a product that works and looks reasonable.

The alternative approach results in software like GIMP.

Quote
Linux has a much higher learning curve than Windows simply because it gives you more control over the machine.
I didn't say anything about Linux's learning curve. Fundamentally it's "learning curve" comes from being steeped in the logic of the 1970's, where a CLI was good for everything. User interfaces are an afterthought when it comes to *nix systems, by design; the CLI tools come first, and the GUI tools that run on various desktop environments simply call those Terminal Programs. (My personal favourite was when the package manager was messed up, Synaptic Package Manager doesn't fix it itself. It knows Exactly how to fix it, and helpfully tells you to run "dpkg --configure" but for some reason isn't able to do that itself. Anyway the highlight there is that the package manager itself is just a UI shell around apt-get and dpkg (or, on non-RPM systems, Yum/ports). The CLI versus UI debate is ancient; those on the side of the CLI claim that while the commands can seem arcane, they also give a lot of power to the user. Whereas the UI proponents (and tbh I tend to lean towards that side, though I imagine that should be fairly obvious too), insist that a well designed GUI can be equally as powerful as a CLI, and far more accessible.

Quote
It is geared more towards high-end users, geeks as they say, rather than Windows is.

No. the problem with Linux is that it's not geared for anybody at all. The things that make Linux seem "geared" for advanced users are what we call "flaws", and the fact is that if those responsible for the system actually had a clue what they were doing and really wanted more market penetration, they would stop seeing those flaws as a design strategy. If you want to get anything done in Linux, you are almost always going to need to drop to Bash. (unless you just want to browse the web and stuff, I think it works for that- just stay away from the package manager, lest you corrupt it and it tell you to run "dpkg --configure"). But the thing is, having to drop to bash is not a purposeful design choice made at some point to "gear" the system to advanced users- it's a design oversight that is still required because nobody has actually looked at it and said, "golly, it's 2013, we shouldn't have to use a 40 year old Software interface method".

Quote
Yes, Windows is dominant in the desktop and laptop market but that is due to Microsoft's marketing strength.
I'd say it's because Linux and OSX are practically unusable to the masses. OSX has faltered because Apple is (reasonably) concentrating on it's cash cow, which is mobile devices, and Linux wasn't designed, but more cobbled together by basement Aspies over a few decades. The result being that "all the flaws are features" such as the fact that you are basically required to have at least passing familiarity with Bash to get along. That leaves Windows, which is actually backed by people that do market research, case studies, and Usability research. Mark Shuttleworth's "usability studies" are usually based on him using something for 40 minutes, though he only really uses it for 20 minutes and for the other 20 is saying what a waste of time such studies are- he knows usability- you know he was in space?

Quote
However, in the server market, Linux is king. Almost 90% of all Internet servers in the world run on Linux, due to the fact that it is less prone to crashes than Windows.

Linux is only stable as a server if you never, ever update it. Resist the urge to naively update your system. The ratio for servers hovers 60%/40%, though it depends heavily on where you get your statistics. (that is from W3Techs)

Quote
One point about Win 8 is that it was basically designed for the tablet market in order to compete with the Android OS
No, that is Windows RT. If you want to split hairs, though, Microsoft was already in the tablet market with Windows CE in the mid 90's, but the hardware simply didn't have the Oomph and we didn't have the communications architecture we have today.

Quote
It is an interesting point that Android is a Linux variant.

Not that interesting. Linux is pretty much just the kernel. Google was gracious enough to remove the Stallman *censored* from the system, so at least we won't hear him asking us to call it "GNU/Linux/Android" or something. Even though it uses a Linux Kernel, Google doesn't mention it explicitly anywhere. It doesn't really matter what the Kernel is. The bulk of the engineering behind the System was done by Google, and to my recollection most of their efforts are closed source, proprietary components. (This includes I believe the Dalvik VM).

The more interesting bit is that while Linux advocacy folks will be quick to mention Android's market share and then label Android as a Linux distribution, when Android is shown to be cracked wide open and rootkitted or some malware that installs to Android systems is made public, many Linux folks will crow about how, "well, Android isn't really Linux". Anyway, Android has a completely different design and marketing philosophy and community than Linux. If anything, Android is successful because of Google's Marketing and Design, not because it happens to use a specific, heavily modified variant of a Open Source Kernel.

Besides, in all of this, where is the Love for FreeBSD Just re-partition your hard drive, download a free trial of Windows 8. It is an easy install and you can dual loot into the old system. They give you 90 days to decide. And you can always add whatever Linux at anytime.

If you have three computers and three e-mail addresses, you should be able to keep going with windows 8 well into nest year. I think.

Solve : I accidently saved a .txt file with different text and need the old version back?

Solve : Windows 10 64-bit Technical Preview?

Answer»

I've been using this for about 10 days & I think it's going to be a winner. It looks more like Windows 7 than Windows 8. MS has admitted that Win8 was not the rave success they had hoped for. Maybe that's why Microsoft skipped over calling the new version Windows 9?
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/preview

I'm booted to it now using a 3rd hard drive, boot selected from BIOS. Only big issue was getting nVida drivers to install. MS driver max resolution was 1280x800, monitor is 1600x900.

Used this procedure:
1. Downloaded driver from NVidia.
2. While booted to Win7-64, started install to get file folders extracted.
3. Moved folders to Win10-64 TP.
4. Booted to Win10-64 TP
5. Opened Device Manager--Display Adapters--Microsoft General Driver---Update Driver
6. Select NVidia folder.I have been testing it for about a week myself. Both 32 and 64 bit versions.

Only issues I have had so far are 2 older ( Pentium 4 and Pentium D ) computers and the EDIT command from command shell crashing on the 32 -bit with NTVDM problems.

I havent tested yet on new hardware, but BC tested the EDIT from command shell and it behaved for him.

Would I buy 10? ...... Probably Yes. However Windows 10 doesnt have any bells and whistles that 7 doesn't already have that I need, so there is "no urgency to have to upgrade".

I am hoping that when they release Windows 10 that they have some sort of incentive offer out there to get it as cheap as they were with Windows 8 when they were practically trying to give it away at $39 at one point for the upgrade edition.

Only complaint I have with 10 is that as far as stand alone offline use.... it definitely wasnt really designed to be run offline, so many features are broken offline because the features require online access. Additionally I am not a fan of having to use a Windows Live account to authenticate with my home computer. I still like the good old user name and password that is local.

When testing the 32-bit offline, where the Pentium D was never connected to a network or internet, it was nice that it was happy with a user name and password such as user Dave and password as ApplePie123

BUT with the Pentium 4 which was connected to the LAN and Internet, Windows 10 32-bit detected this at the get go and immediately wanted me to use Windows Live Account authentication with no option for a normal user name and password.

I havent tested yet what happens when introducing the offline system to network or internet connection as to if it will then default to wanting a Windows Live Account for local authentication and passthrough authentication of the web features on the cloud etc. There is no requirement to use a MS Account in W10 (or W8 either). I run all my Win 8 and Win 10 machines using local accounts.Quote

There is no requirement to use a MS Account in W10 (or W8 either). I run all my Win 8 and Win 10 machines using local accounts.

From my experience with Windows 8 after the 8.1 upgrade it is then that the default that Microsoft wants you to use is the Windows Live Account, and you then have to manually change it back to a normal local password that is not a Windows Live Account. I didnt see that they made it a choice to deselect the Windows Live Authentication with Windows 8.1 when upgrading.

As far as Windows 10, I didnt see any choice to use a normal user name and password on the system that was connected to the internet while installing 10. It seems like only the offline system automatically chose to go the route of local username and password, but that because an Internet connection was found with the other, it went the path of a mandatory Windows Live Account authentication.

So maybe with Windows 8 to 8.1 upgrade as well as Windows 10, if a live internet connection is found its the default to make you create a Windows Live Account or use an already created Windows Live Account, but if you upgrade from 8 to 8.1 or install 10 clean with a system with no internet connection, it then defaults to a local "classic mode" username password.

Now I want to be home on my test system to connect that Offline Pentium D to the internet and see if it then wants to upgrade the authentication to Windows Live or if it will stick with a normal username password. Very Curious if they are forcing it upon people to instead use the Windows Live Account for authentication.

I also want to see if Windows 10 will install to Pentium III 1000Mhz Laptop with 768MB RAM even though the RAM doesnt meet the minimum requirements of 1GB and the GPU might also be missing from supported graphics chips given its age.

Quote
System requirements

Basically, if your PC can run Windows 8.1, you’re good to go. Even if its not realistic to run a specific OS on such a slow CPU and limited RAM, its neat to know if it will work or not. I started doing this back in Windows 95 when installing Windows 95 to an old Everex 80386 SX 16Mhz with 4MB RAM, 512k VRAM Oakes Technology ISA VGA Card, and 80MB HDD that was a loud drive when the arm was moving inside with the heads on it. Windows 95 on this old beast tested around 1999 would just groan with hard drive activity for a good 3 minutes to load Windows 95 mainly because it was likely using a chunk of the drive as virtual memory for 95 to function with just 4MB RAM...LOL This curiosity also pushes the limits of older hardware with newer games etc... such as lets see if a specific game will run with a very weak CPU, but powerful enough graphics card to render the games graphics etc in which the most common issue you run into is either the game pukes stating you need a better CPU or the BUS bandwidth limitations of a weak CPU are slowing the GPU down too much to function, etc.I keeps crashing on my end...
Brand new fresh install on a newer 500G HDD.
Gonna wipe it and try a new install.During install, when prompted for MS account info, click "Create account". On the next screen, near bottom of screen is the option "Use local account". It's that way in both W8 & W10.Quote
During install, when prompted for MS account info, click "Create account". I gave the install my Windows Live Account credentials which I created for my WHS a couple years ago, and it ran with that without having to create a new 2nd Windows Live Account, since that is what I thought the Create Account was going to lead me to, with only option to create a Windows Live Account that I already have and dont need a 2nd Windows Live Account. I will blow away the install and reinstall to check this out. Solve : sound distortion when program opens?

Answer»

When i open or swap a web page such as this site. my music program distorts.
It seems to be more prominent when the pictures download. The curser flutters and stutters it means the loading program is draining power from the operating system. If you have some application that is taxing the CPU hard then i can see that being an issue possibly. Also, This CPU in this system is not the worst that is out there.

I'd look at the power management features and make sure that the CPU is set to maximum processing power vs green mode. If its set to green mode to clock the cpu slower to stretch battery life you can have issues just like this. If the problem happens more when on battery power vs connected to outlet then its very likely that this is the problem.

I have a Netbook that runs on an Intel Atom processor which has the processing power of like a Pentium 4 - 2.53Ghz in comparison of SYSTEMS. If I have my battery life set to the max by setting it to be as green as possible, the system has issues playing music videos through youtube etc. But if I set the power options to maximum performance I am then able to play videos with no problems including netflix streaming through it.

I have my netbook set up to maximum performance when on wall power and maximum performance until battery power reaches 30% in which it goes into green mode and I know I then need to get to an outlet to recharge it. I also have an optional mode to make it run green from 100% battery power down to 12% power in which it is set to shut itself down to get 10 hrs of battery life with computer on if need be.checked all that but no luck i'm afraid Thanks for your responce.try to replace or update the sound driveroh yeah baby. working i feel a little foolish but hey you got it THANK YOU! i was very upset about this. Question. why would my new lappy have the driver installed already. Could it have been removed by my uploads.. Learning allways learning Thanks again. Just tested again before i posted disappiontment it did work but this morning i turned it on and back to normal _______________________Why so i did it again loaded drives all up to date but stillllllll. Please help.

As the program opens my computer goes blurt... blarp... derrrrart....jerrrrkkkk! Just say'in.

The first thing I did is to partitioning the hard drive with EaseUS Partition Master. After that, I want to create a USB recovery drive but I found out that I was unable to do so.

When I launch the recovery drive program build in in Windows, I found out that the "Copy the recovery partition from the PC to the recovery drive" option has been grey out. If I continue the program, it would shows "We can't create a recovery drive on this PC. Some REQUIRED files are missing".

This worked fine for him:
Quote
1. diskpart
2. select disk 0
3. select partition 1
4. assign letter=R
5. exit
6. reagentc.exe /setreimage /path R:\Recovery\WindowsRE /target C:\windows

I get to step "3. select partition 1" fine but at step "4. assign letter=R", I get: "There is is no volume selected". Doesn't say on the disk management but on EaseUS it does.400Mg sounds small for that...however if you insist on doing this via command prompt point it there and see if it continues...
The easier solution would be to follow the Manuf. guide for a factory RESTORE...

NOTE: All data will be gone so do your backups 1st.Haha, I don't insist on anything. I just thought that if i t solved the same problem for someone else, it would do the job.
However, I heard that EaseUS likes to mess up Recovery Partitions and might the reason why it doesn't work....Worst case scenario is you can order the recovery DVD from the manuf...So this is the solution to the problem, for later reference:
(Credit goes to genet from eightforums)

Quote
You must change the OEM partition to the Recovery partition.

diskpart
select disk 0
list partition
select partition # Note: Select the first OEM partition: select partition 1
set id=de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6ac
select partition # Note: Select the second OEM partition: select partition 6
set id=de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6ac
exit

Case closed and thanks for the help ^^

Solve : Windows 8 crashing randomly??

Answer»

So I've begun to notice a problem with my laptop. Not sure what's causing it. Let's say I go to make a meal or take a shower. I've been finding that if I do so, I might come back and WINDOWS has crashed. The only way to fix it is to literally hold my power button and reboot that way. I hate to have to do that but there is no way to get my laptop working again unless I do so.

I'm running W8 64 bit w/ 8 gigs ram. Intel i7 3632QM @ 2.20GHz.GeForce GT 650M.

When this happens, I tend to have Skype, Steam, and my browser (Firefox) running. Which is pretty typical throughout the day. I'm wondering if it's steam because before it has happened when I left steam as the main window and left, especially if my laptop went to sleep. But it'll do it even if Firefox is the main window so I'm not really sure. Wondering if it's connected to my FPS issues I've been having with GTA: San Andreas. But that's another topic. Use Task Manager to monitor processes running; it may give you a CLUE about what program/app is causing the problem.

Also, do you have any malware protection apps (MALWAREBYTES Antimalware, SUPERAntiSpyware, etc.) installed? And, what about antivirus software? Does this only occur if you leave the computer? And what do you mean when you say it Crashes- do you mean it Blue Screens?

If so, it is almost certainly a DRIVER problem. And since it only occurs after leaving it for a while, it may be (and I am somewhat guessing here) that the laptops power-saving features such as sleep are activating and a driver for one of your devices doesn't like it. You mnight have picked up a new driver via Windows Update or something.

If they are blue screens, however, you can use something like BlueScreenView to SEE them. If you aren't receiving blue screens it would help if you detail what you mean when you say it is crashing.

The mouse pointer is on the screen but that is it. If you bought this at a brick-and-mortar retail store and the store allows returns within 2 weeks or some certain (find out if you don't know) and the time period has not ended yet, I would take it back to the store and request an exchange or refund. Or, perhaps allow them to repair it; in this case, make sure it's working right when you get it back.

If returning to the seller is not an option, I'd immediately contact the manufacturer. Of course, be sure to do this while the computer is under warranty. I messed with the power options, sleep and screensaver settings. No more blue screen. Still kinda wonder about that. Thanks!Where is the Solved button?Return it for a replacement...then we'll mark it solved... ...but it's working so well now ...Then stick with it...
Topic starter should show a solved Tab at the bottom of the screen...
Cheers.

Solve : Disabled Service causing Major Problems?

What appears to have happened is that I aquired a *minor* virus of sorts that wouldnt let me start Malwarebytes( and Chameleon didn't work ). So I decided to take matters into my own hands and go through and find suspicious programs, PROCESSES, and services. The last part is where the problem lies. It appears I have dissabled some important services and for some reason Windows didn't feel like telling me they were important. My Main Problems is that any time I "run as Administrator" it crashes the application that I was currently in. As you can imagine this is a paradox considering that to start the service again I'm fairly sure I need to run as Administrator. I believe one of the important services I disabled was AppIdSVC. Solve : Wireless adapter loses connection?

Answer»

I'm having trouble with my adapter LOSING a connection. I found a help page the other day, that said to uncheck the option "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" under the Power Management TAB, and under the Networking tab of the Wi-Fi Properties, to uncheck the "Internet Protocol Version 6".

Well, I did both...wireless connection does fine for a longer period of time, but it still disconnects. I have to resort to restarting, as the troubleshooter is "crap shoot" as to fixing the connection.

So, ...I found a topic for this off of a previous post on this forum, but, the topic said to look for "Speed", "Link", or "Media Type" on the Advanced tab for the network card. I am using Win8.1, and there are no options for the THREE types (see attachment).

Which of the properties types do I use to make the card to stop checking the connection speed?

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Can a weak signal from the wireless router cause this?Your question is about the wireless connection to your laptop. Is that correct? And when you use a direct connection with a cable from your computer to the router or modem, it works fine. Is that right?
So then, you want to know if there's a way to reduce wireless failures . In general, wireless failures are caused by interference from other devices, such as a microwave oven or some other home appliances that generates quite a bit of radio noise. Also, your neighbors may have wireless devices using the same CHANNEL number as yhou. The remedy is to move off of that channel. By at least two to reduce interference. For example, if you neighbors on channel 7, you would like to use channel 10. So there would be two channels and between. If you are in a very crowded urban area that may not be possible.
Also, how far the wireless radio signal has to travel through walls, furniture and appliances can make a difference. Bear in mind that some of wireless devices cause mutual interference. For example, to laptops, side-by-side may interfere with each other's ability to connect to the router. Separating the two computers by about 2 m or 6 feet should be enough to cut down on mutual interference.
Yet another problem is not really the wireless connection itself. The interruption is the modem having a bad connection with the remote server. If that is the case, no ADJUSTMENTS to the wireless settings will resolve the issue.
Here on this forum. There is a search option on the upper right area of your screen. You then enter a topic. There and find lots of related articles and posts that the form has collected. You might try using the search term "wireless dropout."
Hope you find this helpful.
EDIT:If none of this helps, here is another thing to read:
Improve Your Wireless Connection
Quote

Use P2P Software Responsibly
Performance tests on the residential wireless network indicate that certain programs, mainly peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing applications consume an excessive amount of network resources, resulting in overall loss of speed and reliability.
I just changed the channel on the router. I'll see if that helps. Thanks Geek-9pm!

Solve : Windows 8.1 Automatic Repair Loop?

Answer»

Daughter calls me at work to tell me her computer (not sure specifics, I know it's a Dell Ispiron desktop and came w/windows 8 installed) is STUCK in an automatic repair loop and she can't do anything. I did some research, and this seems to be a problem which has surfaced after the LATEST windows 8.1 upgrade. All my research points to her NEEDING to use a disk to boot and then there are some steps to follow. I don't think she has a disk, but i know there are ways to DOWNLOAD those, what i can't find, is how to get to the boot screen or menu, or if i insert a disk/usb will the computer boot automatically from those devices? I know usually hitting f12 or f8 or something like that will do it, but i can't find that works in windows 8. Any suggestions are helpful. Thanks
In Windows 8 it's Shift +F8 for safemode and the advanced boot menu.

You'll still have to find out how to enter the BIOS however to set the boot order...Thanks for the info, after a few attempts I was ABLE to get in and find the bios settings. got some weird preassesment screen first, but I just tried again and hit f12 and found what I blv I was looking for. One of the fixes I found on this problem was to change the boot #1 from uefi windows boot manager to the hard drive where the operating system is. My ignorance shows, cuz I'm used to things like a C drive, but that particular option wasn't listed. It did list internal ODD devices, and I wondered if that could be the same thing? This problem seems to have impacted a lot of people and my research doesn't point to one solution so I was going to try that but thought I'd ask if I was on the right path or not.

My daughter is trying to find her product code for windows 8, it's not on her tower and she can't find some of the paperwork which came with the system. So she may end up calling the manufacture and have them send her a disk, not sure yet.

Anyway, is internal ODD the same as the "C" drive?

Thanks for all the help.ODD devices.
Optical Disc Drive
Oppositional defiant disorder
Odd future is a music group

Thanks for the info. I tried doing the ODD thing but still went in to the automatic repair loop, so we're gonna work on finding her product key and getting a disk and working from there. thanks for all the help.I believe a repair can be done without the product key.
But you already tried that and got a loop.
Still, If you have another computer, you can make a copy of the HDD diagnostics software from Seagate and put it on a CD. It will boot from the CD. Normally the Seagate diagnostic does not destroy data but will identify issues with the hard drive. But it is not sure that it is the hard drive. It might be some other kind of hardware issue.
But here is a link to the Seagate site. You want the program that can boot and run without the Windows System working.
http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/
Try the one that says 'Sea Tools for DOS'.
Hope it helps.

okay thanks, i'll give it a try.

Solve : Suspicious of everything?

Answer»

On the 4th of July my laptop started BEEPING and I lost control of it for a long period of time. The next day (5th of July) I got a call from 'Microsoft' telling me that my license ID or something was hacked and being used for illegal activities. The man told me all sorts of scary things like I could potentially be sued, that my microsoft ID would be suspended and I wouldn't be able to use my computer again. He showed me that I have some sort of trojan horse 'cr' something or the other. He did a WEIRD test thing to prove that he was from microsoft. I believed him and I bought malware protection from Malwarebytes as he directed me straight there.

I found out that microsoft do not call people up and that this person was most likely a scammer. But now I have no idea what to do, I don't know if they can still access my computer and my details despite my anti-malware being active. I do scans with malwarebytes and windows defender and they all say that my computer is fine. But for some reason the beeping happened again even after my malware was installed.

I'm just not sure what to do, I emailed malwarebytes and they gave me a link to a scan but my computer blocked it. I just don't know what to trust, what step to take.
I've had my laptop for less than six months, I really don't want to have to buy a new one but I just can't trust that there isn't someone(s) monitoring what I do or that can take control of my laptop. I can't think of an ALTERNATIVE. First, as you have learned Microsoft doesn't call people. And NEVER allow strangers to access your system.

Second, neither MalwareBytes nor Windows Defender is an anti virus app. Do you have an anti virus app installed and always resident in the background?

Third, do you have a Windows dvd? If so, I'd suggest you start from scratch. Format your drive and reinstall the OS. Alternatively, does your laptop have a recovery partition? If so, utilize it to return the system to "as shipped" state. Then INSTALL an AV and use some COMMON sense in the future.
My common sense flies out of the window when I panic! Anyway, thank you and I hope it works Quote

Second, neither MalwareBytes nor Windows Defender is an anti virus app.
In Windows 8 and 8.1 Windows Defender is an AV and anti-spyware app.Unplug the router/modem...
Do all your work at the local Library...
Problem solved.Someone can only do hacking when you are online. Just reformat your laptop. Please ignore the advice above...
