Solve : how to add hot spare into raid 5?

Answer» QUOTE from: BC_Programmer on May 27, 2010, 04:07:37 AM
Redundant Array of (Independent|Inexpensive) Disks.

Sounds like a bunch of hard drives to me.
They are physically independent. But they must work together to GIVE the system its performance goals.

A bunch of flowers and a floral arrangement are not the same
A Drive Array is not a bunch of drives.

Here is a suggested reference about a actual product.
Setting up the 2.5 TB hot-swap array
Perhaps this article will help the OP understand you can not increase the STORAGE capacity by upgrading just one drive in a system based mostly on hardware.

[Yes, you can do 3 physical drives a a virtual 5 drive array in software.Tthat is not the case here.]
I am running Server 2008 Ent and have a Raid 5 setup with 5 x 2tb drives and wish to add a 6th drive also of the same make and capacity to use as a hot spare. Can someone please explain how I do this in Server 2008.  I dont want extra space and I understand what a hot spare is but can't find how to implement it in WHS 2008.

Ok, 1) Start your own thread.  2) RAID 5 isn't a Windows THING, it's completely un-related.  Windows doesn't really "do" RAID.  3) You'll probably need to recreate the container, which means wiping the current config, which means a backup & restore will be required.  That is, unless the RAID hardware you're using supports adding disks to a RAID 5, which is what you're doing if you're adding a hot spare, which I DOUBT.  If you just want it as a spare, then you have no problems, but you will have to manually replace the failed drive, in it's slot, with the working one.  Also, you need to check that your RAID hardware supports hot spares.  Link to the new post and I'll follow it.

Solve : large hard drive support?

Answer»

Hi All,
I am looking for a way to get an old 2000 server to see a 500 gig drive. I have enabled the large drive support but the drive won't show all of its space. It is a seagate drive. I use to use maxblast and when I downloaded it I got an error. It said it wouldn't load on windows 2000 server. It is only for windows 2000 pro.

Anyone have a work around?

Thanks
You need all the Windows 2000 server updates. And even then, you may have to make an entry in the registry.
Quote

The FOLLOWING CONDITIONS are necessary for the correct functioning of 48-bit LBA ATAPI support:
    A computer with a 48-bit LBA-compatible Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) installed.
A computer with a hard disk that has a capacity of greater than 137 gigabytes (GB).
You must enable the support in the Windows registry by adding or changing the EnableBigLba registry value to 1 in the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Parameters
Read this over. It includes Windows 2000 server
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305098Howdy Geek,
I have done the registry change already and the server has all the patches and updates installed. It is a fresh install. The problem I am having is I was using a old version of maxblast to run the drive. I WENT on the web to get the new version which I did. When I run the install it stops and says that I have to call the sales office because the new version will not run on a server....only workstations.

I will try to find version 3 which I think will still run on a server.

Thanks
I have done some reading and found that the backend of the lastest verion of MaxBlast 5 is Acronis. The program is now really a disk image software. It use to be for creating a way for the older systems to read bigger hard drives.

I downloaded MaxBlast 3.6. This makes a floppy you can boot from to load the software and see the larger drives. I am going to give it a try later tonight.

Thanks
MaxBlast Minimum system requirements

Maxtor MaxBlast requires the following hardware:
• At least one Seagate Technology or Maxtor disc drive
• Pentium processor or higher
• 128 MB RAM
• FDD or CD-RW drive for bootable media creation
• Mouse (recommended).

Supported operating systems
• Minimum Windows® 2000 Professional SP 4Forget the MaxBlast software...DLoad and run the SeaTools from Seagate as they bought Maxtor and made the diagnostics backwards compatible for older Maxxtor HDD's.

I don't understand how the SeaTools will help me. The drive is fine it's just in a old computer that can't see a large drive 500 gigs.

Can seatools work with a win2000 server to see a bigger drive?

If it's the computer that can't see the drive, than I'm not sure why you are blaming Windows 2000.I am not blaming Windows 2000. I was just explaining what I tried to do to fix this. What I was trying to do was load a drive overlay program, in this case maxblast, to get the machine to run a large drive. When I tried to load maxblast 5 I got a error saying that it wouldn't run on windows 2000 server.

I found a older copy of maxblast. Version 3.6 and loaded it onto a floppy and booted the machine. I was able to load it so now I can run the big drive I wanted.

Thanks for everyones help.

Oh. A DRIVER Overlay Program.

Typically, the only people willing to use a Drive Overlay program are those that haven't before...Excellent point !

Solve : How to Regain previous IP or (Reserved IP) from the DHCP??

Answer»

Hey everyone.

We have a DHCP on our network, from where most PCs ACQUIRE the IP add. But some PC need to keep the same IP add for CERTAIN applications and frequent remote access.
Recently one of these kind of machines crushed, so i had to perform a clean Win XP Pro installation, this machine had its IP add reserved but when i joined it back to the Domain it acquired a different IP add. My question is: is there anyway i can make it acquire the PREVIOUS IP which was reserved? i do know what the IP add is.

We running win srv 2003 R2 Enterprise. all Client Stations OS is Win XP Pro SP3. The lease time is 8hrs.

Appreciate any help.
ThxWith a million combinations of #'s why fight it ? ?
Just assign it a new IP.Thanks Patio.
In fact it already acquired a new IP add, and i thought of doing the same thing, unfortunately the user who manages this PC and its respective application, said there is a strong necessity to retain the previous IP add due to various connection that this machine receives, and he does not want to go around and redo the configuration that is in place.

Since the previous IP add is reserved I'm thinking to assign it manually and see if this resolves the issue.

Will post back the outcome.

Thanks guys.Just to make sure you are saying that the address has been removed from the DHCP pool? If the address is not reserved you could have a duplicate address on the network and take both systems down.

If the address is reserved then you should be able to REMOVE DHCP from the client and assign the static address that the user is requesting. This will force the client system to only use that assigned address. If your system is so critical that it always needs the same IP address, industry best practices say that it should have a static IP, not DHCP. The DHCP server adds a point of failure that isn't necessary. Thanks guys for all your input, i all i had to do is to assign it a static IP Add, and that solved the issue.

Once again thanks.

Solve : At least one service or driver failed during system startup?

Answer»

Hi

I have got domain environment (AD win2003 server) under Event Viewer (APPLICATION and System and DNS Server) I have got couple of Event IDs.

I know that Google is our friend but I got confused which Event IDs should I examine

The error message that I have been experiencing is the snapshot below

QUOTE

At least one service or driver failed during system startup. Use Event Viewer to examine the event log for details.

I have got lengthy Event Viewer (SPECIALLY for Applications and System but not DNS Server) therefore I did not post them

Thanks
I can upload Event Viewer if needed
I get those messages on sql servers and domain controllers when I reboot them. It never really amounts to anything on my servers. What service does it say is not starting up?You get those when a service ran out of time to start. It happens a lot with helper services not starting in time when the machine is booting.

Just GO though the list of your services and manually start the one that didn't start.

Solve : Multiple connections to a server or shared resource?

Answer»

I keep getting an annoying error message when connecting from a client pc to a admin share on a remote server.

"Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not ALLOWED. Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again."

Currently I am having to either (after getting error message) connect to the ip address or RDP to the server and stop the previous session. This is very annoying and TIME consuming to keep up. Is there any way to allow the previous connection to be replaced with the current requested connection? Are you connecting to the server with the same account each time or a different account? Also, does each account have administrative rights on that computer? If the account has admin rights, it should be able to just kick off the previously signed in user.
Also, make sure you log out (not just close) of the session when you quit unless you know you are going to sign back in with the same account. Quote from: michaewlewis on December 14, 2009, 12:48:12 PM

I think you miss understood what I am doing. I am only using rdp as a last resort to stop the last session. first I try and do

start
run
\\Server\Drive$

That will connect me to the admin share on the server and prompt for credentials. At this point I enter my admin account information and receive the error message.

I am trying to connect to the admin share on an install server. I always connect with the same account (my admin account). I have full access to the system the users have read only to a specific folder on the server. To gain access to the software installs I need to connect with my admin account. Are you logged in as domain admin or are you logged in as a user? If you're logged in as domain admin, you won't need to enter any credentials, since they're already there.
The only times I've seen the error you're talking about is when I'm logged in as a user and try entering admin credentials to gain access to a default share.  Not sure why it does that, but you can work around it by creating a share for the drive and assigning permissions to the users that need it.
crap that is what I have done...........   When I started at this office we were (around 25 cuts) running more software then we had licenses for. One of the first things I did was to take "Full control"  from everyone. That has limited the numbers back down to the appropriate LEVELS. There has got to be a way around this. I will let you know if I find something. It sounds like when you're connecting to the admin share, the PC you're using is trying to pass on the login credentials for the PC you are using, FAILING, then asking for the domain user name/password, then crapping out with the "Multiple connections..." error.

To work around this, you can either:

a) Log onto the PC you're using with the same domain user name/password you're using to connect to the admin share.

b) If the PC is not joined to the domain, then create a local user account with the name name/password, grant it local admin rights, reboot, and log in with that account.  After logging in with that account, connect to the admin share.  Enter credentials if asked.I most of the time can not just log off the user because they are in the middle of processing or such. The systems are members of the domain so creating accounts is not a valid option for me.

I was just checking to see if there was an option / setting that would allow what I am trying to do by overtaking or stopping the previous session. As far as I know, there isn't.

If I remember correctly, there's a Microsoft KB article describing this exact issue, which ends with "This behavior is by design."yes they do not want to unintentionally grant elevated permissions to a user. But,  I was hopeful that there was a way to override the default handling of the admin shares. so far I have just been doing the following   .

I know with a share you create there is the option to enable Access-based enumeration and by pass this issue. But, unfortunately I have not found a way to do this yet.

Solve : Windows server 2008 Need Help please?

Answer»

i have an old pc and my gud one now i want to put windows server 2008 on the old pc but it wont boot the cd i burned it came from dreamspark no worries and i then put the hdd in my pc and installed it on there  but when i put it back in my old pc it starts and then LOOPS before windows loadup screen i then TESTED it in my new pc were it worked just fineWhat you have EXPERIENCED is normal. If you install Windows on a PC and then take the hard drive out and put it in a different PC, it won't work. That is because each Windows installation ties itself to the hardware of the PC it is installed to.
you could use a tool like sysprep to run through the mini setup. This is how places like dell load an IMAGE with software already installed. The mini setup will detect and install all hardware that drivers are supplied for.

Solve : System time changes to 2002?

Answer»

Very strange issue where my Windows Server R2 machine changes the system time to 2002, but leaves the same day, time, and month. This only happens when the server is REBOOTED or if c:/ drive is accessed. Any ideas?I would say either a virus or a dying cmos battery.Do a virus scan on the server. If there's no viruses, CHECK to see where it is getting time UPDATES from. Perhaps the time PROVIDER is having ISSUES.

Solve : HP OmniBook 510 OS Help?

Answer»

Hello all,

I recently was given a HP OmniBook 510 "Ultra Portable" PC. It was given to me for free so I didn't really check it over for ISSUES before I got it. To my dismay, the docking pins were bent and would arch if I docked the Computer to its Base station. This would not normaly be an issue, however the PC itself has no CD/DVD or Floppy DRIVES, the base does. So now the base is rendered useless. I attempted to install windows 98 on a similar PC and then use that as a base to upgrade to XP. It worked, however when setup attempted to copy the rest of the files it failed. I attemped the same with linux and still NOTHING. I need this laptop to work, so I can use it. It does not seem that the BIOS supports native USB boot either, so my exteral USB DVD Drive is useless too. I do have 2 small home network servers, but I really do not know how to do a network install. Any and all help is appriciated!

Thanks.

I'm quite sure that it is possible to install over the network, via MICROSOFT Server 2003 Remote Instilation Services Client. Seeing as that was specificialy designed to PREFORM that very task. Also, as i said in my post, the computer does not support USB boot.

Solve : C:\windows\installer files?

Answer»

question is, are the installer files important to keep around? they're TAKING up 1.4 gb of SPACE on a 16gb drive, so I kind of want them gone if possible. operating system is server 2003 if it makes a difference. Is this installer files for your server's  hardware? You COULD write it into a CD and be in handy if circumstances need it.I don't KNOW if they're hardware install files..... it's kind of the whole reason I posted my question. I don't know what they are. The files have a random assortment of letters and numbers followed by either *.msp or *.msi
And I'm not about to copy all those files to a cd. If they're important, then they need to stay there. If not, I'm not going to try to keep track of them on a cd.

Also, a correction. The PATH is C:\Windows\inf\Installer\, not C:\Windows\Installer.you know add/remove programs? Well most of the applications in there won't uninstall if you delete those files...The path on my XP is c:/windows/installer

Solve : RAID 10 upgrade?

Answer»

the system in question

IBM server rack, 6 drive array (hot swap) RAID 10 setup, all drives are 73 gig total storage 204 gig. Server 2008 64bit, SP2

Can I replace the 6 drives with 6 300 gig drives and RECLAIM the space on the boot volume, or do I have to create another drive letter for the additional space. ONE other factor, the array is basic now, would changing to dynamic make a difference and when would this change occur, before or after the drive swap

Thanks for your helpIt all depends on your raid controller. Check the manual to SEE if it allows for expansion. I know that the Intel raid controllers I use all allow online expansion and raid migration, but I don't even know what the model number for yours is.

Solve : "ProxyDHCP service did not reply" Error?

Answer»

Hi,

I am deploying Win 7 Pro, using WDS, onto Samsung and TOSHIBA laptops.

The server is Intel i7 CPU, Gigabyte motherboard with DUAL Gigabit LAN cards and 12GB RAM - a very capable system to say the least! I have also connected 2 Netgear ProSafe 16 Port Gigabit Switches so that I can deploy images up to 30 machines at once (Cat 6e cable in use too).

I can connect and deploy these images successfully using both LAN cards, and through both Netgear switches.

The PROBLEM I am experiencing is that if I connect more than three machines at once, they remainder get the dreaded:

"PXE-E55 ProxyDHCP service did not reply to request on port 4011"

I have researched this and it suggests that I should remove the reference to 060 PXE Client within the server settings.

However, when reading the recommendations for the server settings, under DHCP, it clearly states that this option should be ticked as the DHCP server is also acting as a PXE server. Suffice it to say I deleted the reference anyweay to see what happens, and after a reboot the PXEClient property is automatically added back by the OS anyway.

I've tested both LAN cards with the Belkin network test facility and they are both fine.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?Resolved!

Ignore M$ advice and DO NOT SELECT the tick box option:

WDS> Server Properties> DHCP > Configure DHCP option 60 to indicate that this server is also a PXE server,

But instead Add 060 to the scope of the DHCP Server > Scope > Scope Options.

Sorted

To deploy this model, you can create an organizational unit (OU) structure after the forest root domain deployment is complete. Then you can restructure Windows NT account and resource domains into the forest root domain.

# Multiple domain forest. In a multiple domain design, the forest root domain can be a dedicated root used only for administration of the forest, or it can contain users, groups, and resources in addition to the forest administration accounts. Once the forest root domain is deployed, the forest owner will create one or more REGIONAL child domains to complete the Active Directory forest hierarchy. The regional domains can be created either by UPGRADING existing Windows NT 4.0 or Microsoft® Windows® 2000 domains or by deploying additional new domains.

Solve : Add "other" groups to computer when joining domain?

Answer»

I am trying to find a way to add a number of security groups to a computers Local Administrators when they are JOINED to a domain, much like the Domain Admins group is dropped into each when they are joined. So a couple of questions...

Is there a way to automatically do this when they are joined?
Can it be applied via Group Policy?

I apologize if this has been addressed, and I can't quite get the PHRASING correct to get a result on google...

Thanks! Not really sure what you are wanting to do..... Are you trying to migrate custom security groups from your DC into CLIENT computers? If so, maybe check out the Restricted Groups in Group Policy/Policies/Windows Settings/Security Settings. That MAY have what you're looking for. Not sure, though since I don't really know what you're trying to accomplish.I want to be able to add other domain security groups to the local computers Administrators group automatically when the computer is joined to the domain, just like the "Domain Admins" group is dropped in when joined. The domain security groups are global, so they should be inherited by any computer on the domain.

Now i try  to create a child domain in Active Directory.
When i open dcpromo "This server is the last domain CONTROLLER in the domain check box"
My question is how to add new child domain?
Thank you.You need to do dcpromo on another pc. You can't do it on the same ONE. That's why you get that message about being the last dc. Running dcpromo on the pc that you already ran it from means you WANT to "delete" the dc. You'll only get the option for a new child domain if you run dcpromo on a different pc. Solve : moving shares, but keeping users' shorcut the same ??

Answer»

We run a Windows Server 2003 environment (2 DC's) with multiple XP workstations, latest Service Packs.

Users all have a shortcut on their XP workstations that point to server1 for SHARED folders (\\server1\...).
We need to move the shared folders to server2, but we want to keep the user shorcuts to "\\server1" as is.
We tested with making a CNAME record in the DNS called "shared" and POINTING it to the IP of server1...Did a ping and it resolved to the correct IP address (goal was to see if we could path to "\\shared" through windows explorer, but could not."
Our intention was to move the shares to server2 and put a CNAME record called server1 that would resolve to server2's IP address. But it's obvious that wont work since our little test failed.

How can we do this, simplified. Thanks...have you checked into DFS? This is very picky about the configuration but once it is running you can modify paths without CHANGING the users short cuts or paths.

check out the link:

Yea I've looked into Distributed File System. Just wanted a quick FIX for now, plus I'm not sure how DFS would work with a Hard Drive Enclosure; yet. Ultimately that will be the way we go, again just wanted a quick fix so we can hardware upgrade next week. Thanks!

Still researching so if anyone KNOWS a way, or has a idea I can look into please post.Well after almost two full days of research there are three solutions for me, here they are for anyone with a similar issue...

1) Create alias in WINS server - server1 must be taken offline for this to work

2) Create CNAME record server1 to point to server2's IP address, then reg hack on server2
    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Lanman\Parameters\DisableStrictNameChecking (DWORD = 1)

3) Registry hack again - server1 must be taken offline for this to work
    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Lanman\Parameters\OptionalNames (REG_SZ = server1 name here)
Do believe you can make it a multiple string value if need be

Haven't tried anyone of these, but I'm sure they will do the trickWhy not map a drive on their pcs to the new share?

Solve : Disk Quota Help??

Answer»

I have a question..

i am running windows server 2003, i have like 10 users.. and i've MADE home folders and set quota's on their home directory.
Now that works but i have another question.
I have also made other maps on a different PARTITION.. i got like 5 maps and i have set the disk quota's to 50 MB max.
I dont WANT EACH user to be able to write 50 MB to those maps, i want the maps to be 50 MB all together.. so 50 MB is available for ALL users. So i dont want each user to be able to write 50 MB.

Can anyone help? I have GOOGLED alot and searched in the faqs but i couldnt find anything..

Help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.!

Gucciluchave you set the disc quota on the share? Try limiting the share quota to 50 MB.

go into disc management then the quota tab. I'm not 100% sure since I haven't OPENED up my server book in years. However, I believe this was a limitation of server 2003. It's on a user basis rather than folder basis.

Solve : Recovery Partition Not Recognised Using MDT & WDS?

Answer»

Hi Everyone,

Apologies in advance for the length of this POST, but I want to get as much info across as possible.

My company has purchased thousands of Acer laptops, that we will sell to selected customers only. Acer will not provide us with the master image of these MACHINES (nothing new there where Acer is concerned!!).

This should not be a problem anyway as I am using ImageX to capture the images I need. I am wanting to deploy the SYSTEM images I capture back onto refurbished/repaired machines using Server 2008 R2, Windows Deployment Service and the Deployment Toolkit 2010.

Server is configured with WDS, WSUS, DHCP and DNS.

I have created a PE disc, booted from this on the reference machine and used ImageX to make copies of the recovery partition and the OS partition. I have then copied these over to the deployment share on the server. No problems so far!

Now, when I use MDT to import the images it can see the OS image and imports that fine. It can see the recovery image, but after it imports it, it fails to list it in the operating systems list - it just doesn't list it anywhere. However, if you go into the operating systems folder of the deployment share, where these images are STORED, it does have it in there. Curious?

I've used the Task Sequence section to format the hard drive and create TWO partitions. The OS is being installed onto the first partition and has been marked as 'Boot'.

I can use the LiteTouchPE  file through WDS to deploy just the OS and any updates needed - everything goes through great. But it just won't allow me to add the recovery partition to the deployment.

As I can do all of this I can safely say there are no network issues, no admin restrictions issues or server issues.

I've used three brand new out-of-the-box Acers to create the images needed in case one was corrupt.
I've tried to capture the OS and Recovery partitions separately and then add them as separate images through MDT.
I've also tried to append the recovery.wim image to the OS.wim image but then MDT won't see the 'whole' image after it's been imported.

I've started to pulling my eyebrow hairs out now as none are left on my head!!

Beers on are on me for anyone who solves this!

Solve : Where does Network shared file goes when deleted?

Answer»

Hi guys,
One of my network users accidentally deleted one of our company file shared in our server. Where does it go? is it recoverable?

ThanksFiles deleted from a shared folder are NOT sent to the recycle bin anywhere.

Your best option would be to literally shut down the share and run a file recovery program.

Additionally- make sure that when you allow write/delete ACCESS, the users given that access are going to act responsibly with it- Don't, for example, give somebody who always comes in to complain about "lost files" that you find in their recycle bin ability to delete files. if you right click the shared folder is there a previous versions under properties?? If so should recover it
maybe...

OR try active undelete (google it)I agree with BC here...
If the network is set up properly the files are only gone on that workstation and reside on the server...

two problems with that being that they might not be using Vista, as well as the fact that I don't believe that it keeps shadow copies of entire folders.

Now if the server is running Vista, their might be previous versions of the deleted file, which I believe you meant to say anyway.

From what I can gather- the scenario is this:

we have a Server, running an OPERATING System we can only guess (probably some form of windows?) which is sharing folders over a network.

one of the workstation users deleted a file from the shared folder (preventable by changing security settings on the server to deny delete access to the share by users). Now is there a way to get it back?

Files deleted from a share by a remote user aren't sent to either machines recycle bin. The only recourse in this instance would be to use a recovery application, as indicated.

vista?? if Shadow Copies of Shared Folders feature is not ENABLED on server your correct..otherwise
it should be recoverable..IMO

agreed I just assumed w2K, W2003, W2008 server...yup some are still running older servers so...lesson is don't assume anything...BTW..is there a vista version server out yet...!!??

never mind...guess it's W2008SP2...I think so, not sure though- I think Server 2008 is essentially the "vista" version.

or maybe Vista Business? Quote from: wareup on December 02, 2008, 07:51:52 AM

It goes bye-bye.  There is no recycle bin for network shares.

As others have mentioned, Shadow Copies would be your next best hope.

If no Shadow Copies, then restore from backup.

If no backup, then use an undeleter.

If an undeleter doesn't work, then you're screwed (and if there are no backups, someone should be fired...)

Solve : Setting up Server 2003 on virtual pc 07.........cannot connect to internet?

Answer» HI all, I'm hoping you can help me with something ive been struggling with. Please bare with me as i am a networking newbie but trying to put together a home network for learning purposes. I have two machines that i will be dealing with but so far the issue i have is just with ONE, for which i installed virtual pc 07 on to of xp. On the virtual machine i want Server 03 so i installed it on the virual machine. I know one of the best practices when installing an OS is to get updates right away so i tried that and my problem is i cannot connect to the internet. Page cannot be displayed error. My LAN connection looks good. I did reinstall from ISO but i didnt THINK that would do it. Would you guide me in the right direction? Like i said im a newbie so this may sound easy to some of u but ive grown frustrated.....please help!!!

rhoadsDid you set up LAN on the virtual machine itself?
Being as I dont have it installed right now, I cant tell you how to get there. However, its under some sort of configuration. Remember, the virtual machine must be off before you can configure those options.

Also, check the device manager and make sure that its detecting the device in the virtual machine. Yes, I do have a LAN connection on the virtual machine. I have the icon in my tray on the bottom of the screen. My configuration looks good.....i think.....with preferred dns pointing to the IP ADDRESS. I believe i tried changing it to the loopback address just to see if that had anything to do with it but no luck. I can ping myself, my gateway(router), an outside ip address such as google. Stumped.

Solve : Return addresses on Outlook?

Answer»

I have yet another problem to tackle .

We are running Exchange 2003 on a Windows Server 2003 server with active DIRECTORY.  Our USERS run either Windows 2000 or Windows xp using either Outlook 2000 or 2003.

I have been ASKED to get mailbox x to forward all incomming mail to mailboxes a, b, c & d. That part I can do at the server end of things.

I am to set up things so that when the users reply to the emails, their replies will appear as to have come from mailbox x, where the customers originally sent them to. This is the bit I cannot figure out how to do.

Please can anyone help?

ThanksI'm not AWARE that any active forum MEMBERS have expertise in Exchange, but I could be wrong.  I found two sites you might visit:

Compaq system bios D14 (01/08/2003)
Compaq Ultra3 Bios 3.02.01
2001 Adaptec

Dual core 2.3 GHz
4GB RAM
2 Internal Fans
1 External Fan
2 PMM's (Processesor memory modules)
1 PCI-E 64bit-wide SCSI HDD Smart Array ADAPTER [space for 6 drives]

6 SCSI drives [38.2 GB]
1 IDE Seagate HD 40GB
1 Dvd Writer

Boots cmos fine.
Memory check works.
Dual cpu's are found. Correct frequency speed.
F9 for Bios Settings.
All settings are optimized default. IDE HD is found.

Boot sequence
1. IDE HD
2. CDROM
3. PCI-E SCSI Smart array adapter
4. Floppy Drive

I copied files to IDE HD from windows xp disc (I also tried vista and windows 7)
The problem is when the windows disc wants to reboot it REBOOTS then starts up but does not automatically continue setup.
It states that the server is currently configured for windows.NT/2000.
I went into bios settings and changed OS selection to other OS (and also tried OS/2)
Yet still it boots and instead of continuing installation tries a 'PXE NIC' Boot [then searching for DHCP connection.]
I have tried changing boot sequence, reinstalling the disc again then changing the OS selection every way I can yet it still refuses to continue the installation using the IDE HD.
I've tried using different IDE HD's. I've also tried to boot without the Smart Array PCI-E adapter still yet it changes nothing.
The motherboard has no damage i'm aware of, the server has never been dropped, in fact for it's age, is in nice condition.
No dust Build up,
There isn't much else I can do. No one in my class for Polytech can figure it out.
Any ideas?

Is there something stupid i'm doing?  Sorry if double post isn't allowed..

But I may try installing windows 2000 or .NT  as the OS selection in the Bios states as options.

Or even an ubuntu live CD could be the way to go, since my PC actually picks up the HD, this may be a good workaround.the Optical Drive should be the HD in the boot order.

for some reason it's falling back on trying to boot from the network. You could disable that feature. Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 30, 2010, 03:19:03 PM

the Optical Drive should be <before> the HD in the boot order.

for some reason it's falling back on trying to boot from the network. You could disable that feature.

I have changed the boot sequence to every possibility I can and it does not change the effect.

Also the PXE/NIC boot or whatever it is, I can disable it, but then it skips booting from the network then says 'system disk error'.
I know with system disk error, it's indicating that the HD has either no system files to boot from and/or means that it is not configured for the server pc. also that the boot sequence needs to be rearranged. As I mentioned before I have changed around the boot sequence in many different ways previously.

Also I booted the recovery console from the windows disc to..
FIXMBR
and
FIXBOOT

Yet It still refuses to boot.

I'm at my whits end with this server. There really is nothing I can think of.
The jumpers are all set correctly, everything is plugged in correctly.
It seems so strange. 2 things here...

1) Why are you not booting to an OS CD to facilitate a proper install on this machine ? ?
2)What drive are you intending to install to ? ? 1 of the SCSI drive araay ...or the 40G.

The system disk error is because the installation is not completing upon re-boot and you have no proper OS install...

At any rate BC is correct...boot to network should be temporarily disabled until the OS is installed properly...
It's not needed. Quote from: patio on March 30, 2010, 04:42:43 PM

Sorry but it seems like you haven't Quote
'I copied files to IDE HD from windows xp disc'

Woah... you're serious? you just pretty much XCopied the disk contents to a hard drive and expected that to work? It doesn't and it won't.

FIXBOOT and so forth won't work to fix it since the CD doesn't boot to a Windows XP system until after it copies most of the files to the HD and restarts the machine.I suspect it uses some sort of custom boot sector. Quote

Guess i could say the same.

You cant install an OS from the same HDD the install files are written to...

Yeah? I've mentioned that. And It was a proper installation.
It never finished it's work after the re-boot...so it can't be a proper install...

If in fact you WANT to install to the IDE the SCSI array should be disconnected...
Then the install should be done properly by booting to the XP CD and letting it complete.
Once everything is up and running then you can add the SCSI array and all necessary drivers afterwards....Okay I'll try state my problem again,

When I said I copied the os files to the HD, I meant..

I booted the OS installation disc, and I partitioned the HD and the disc then COPIES the OS files to the HD.

Now the problem is, after it copies the files it needs to reboot. Right?
Well my server reboots, but it does not continue installation, it just boots the disc again.

and like I said before I've tried different ways of booting from optical drives, to Hdd's.

sorry if my post seemed vague.Dis-connect the SCSI araay...
Eliminate the network boot option and try again...I have to ask....after the CD runs the install and then does the reboot do you see a note that says something like....Press any key to boot from the CD......

If you do are you pressing a key?

Umm yes I do press a key.
And then I've tried waiting, which also does not start installation correctly..
meh. It's pretty messed up.Format the drive and start the server install.....

when you get to the reboot and see the note "Press any key to boot from the CD...." Do not hit any key. Just let the machine go....

What I think is happening is it does the first half of the install and does a reboot. By you hitting a key it starts the install over. If you do not hit a key the machine starts the second half of the install.....which needs the CD to be left in the machine.

So the bottom line is wipe the machine clean by formatting it and start the install and let it reboot. Don't hit any key...just let it go. It should boot from your hard drive and read and install the rest of the files from CD.

You should be doing this without any other items in the machine like patio said...unplug the SCSI and anything else except the CD and the IDE hard drive.

Good luck...

I think you nailed it Spoiler. I was having the same thought. The only time you need to press a key when you see that message is the very first time you install the os from the cd. After the first reboot you no longer press a key because you do not want it to boot from the cd again. You want it to boot from the hard drive instead. Even though you may have the hard drive set to boot first, if the pc detects a cd and asks you to press a key you are bypassing that. You are stuck in an endless loop of your own doing. However, I don't think you need to wipe the drive and start over since you already have the files copied to it. Just don't press a key. But if you want a FRESH new install then wipe it.

PS - I just noticed he hasn't replied in about 4 days so I guess that solved his issue. No sorry spoiler I don't think I made myself understood.

When you say do not press any key when it brings up the 'press any key to boot from cd'

Clearly, I already know that.

It then boots from HD like said but the thing is it refuses.
fullstop.

Solve : Unique Disk ID change for Windows Home Server?

Answer»

Looking for a way to change my Unique Disk ID on a cloned drive to match the original to fix a stupid problem with Windows Home Server where the Unique Disk ID has to match or Home Server Breaks.

The Unique ID of the 80GB Drive running happily with Home Server is A4E19DC0
and the Unique ID of the 160GB Drive that boots Home Server, but complains about issues is ID 49AF49AF.

Windows Home Server's DiskPart utility is version 5.2.3790.3959 and I have seen where version 6.0.6002 has a Uniqueid disk id=A4E19DC0 feature to change the 49AF49AF to A4E19DC0, BUT I do not have Diskpart version 6.0.6002 available.

Does anyone know how I can change this with version 5.2.3790.3959 or some other utility. Below is a screen shot of the issue. *This is different than the Volume ID which would be xxxx-xxxx in which C: and D: have a Hex Volume ID.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897418.aspxThanks Allan for your SUGGESTION...HOWEVER it appears that it is no longer available as per.... NewSID has been retired and is no longer available for download. Please SEE Mark Russinovich’s blog post:

I am guessing that Maybe MS may have been involved in pulling it off the web.

* Update is that SINCE my last post i was able to use a laptop running Windows 7 Home which has Diskpart version 6.x.xxxx and it has UniqueID command. I then ATTACHED my hard drive as an external and got to it via these commands

C:\>diskpart
Diskpart> select disk 1
Diskpart> uniqueID disk id=a4e19dc0
Diskpart> detail disk
*which displayed that it took the change from 49af49af to a4e19dc0
Diskpart> exit
C:\>

So i was able to finally get the Unique ID changed. I then booted up MS Home Server and half the problem was gone. That is it believed that the original hard drive was now attached so the majority of the errors were gone, BUT it still had errors in which it appears that the database of MS Home Server was malfunctioning.

I then attempted to perform a repair installation to fix this since the Database Repair tool in MS Home Server didnt fix it even after reboot, and after the repair installation I was back to square 1 in which I found out that Windows changes this UID when it installs the GUI on Hard Drives and now the UID was 89c089c0 and all the original problems were back where it sees the 160GB drive and shows the 80GB drive as MISSING.

So after wasting 6 hrs on this ripping my hair out I took a break from this madness. I find it rather frustrating that you cant create a recovery backup image of a this server to use in case you actually have to recover it.

So I guess the original issue of changing the UID of the HD has been resolved and now I just need to give MS Tech Support a call to see if they have a clue as to how to implement a backup deployment strategy with MS Home Server.

I have used Ghost 2003 for every MS OS and this is the only OS Yet to PUKE on Cloning Drives due to a design by MS that causes the Cloned Copy to Fail. Windows 7 was even able to be cloned as well as Server 2003 at my workplace.Yikes!  What was your final solution?  Any luck with this?  Sent you an email as well.

Thanks!

Solve : Windows Deployment Services?

Answer»

Hello!Any Help PLease.I new To server.
My problem Is I cannot Deploy Windows XP,from server Windows deploy service.
I have 2 pc and one server. When i try BOOT from network onboard( network integrated into the motherboard)
On clients pc I choose 1boot FROM NETWORK IN BOOT.

ERROR: Novell NETWARE Ready Firmware v1.00 (940809) Then the following
RPL-ROM-ADR: 0011 5baXX xxxx
RPL-ROM-IRQ: 5
RPL-ROM-FFC:count  2 3 4 5 6
Insert Boot media in selected Boot device and press a key(i try to use 2 pc and the same error)

NOW, WHEN I INSERT New NETWORK CARD IN PCI SLOT WORK FINE.And i deploy IMAGE to any pc.just pressing f12.
My question is: Its possible to deploy image to client pc, witout newtork card.I just want use my network integrated into the motherboard.
Or i have to buy for each client pc new network  card.

ANY RECOMENDATION PLEASE.Thank you.

In order to boot from network the NIC has to have a PXE option. If it doesn't then it can't boot from network. So it appears that the built-in NIC doesn't have this option and the one you put in does.

Solve : credentials to join domain?

Answer» HELLO!
I new to Server. i have one question.
i have 1 server.now a join 2 pc to domain of this server.
when ask me for credentials to join domain.I should entered the same name and password when i login to server RIGHT???
So My Question Is SO NOW MY PC USER USE THE SAME LOGIN AND PASSWORD WITH SERVER.  IT'S POSSIBLE TO CHANGE OR LEAVE LIKE THAT.
every body can access MY SERVER NOW?
 Thank you.
Are you teaching yourself how to use windows server? These are REALLY basic questions that are taught in self study books.

When you join a pc to a domain you are asked for credentials. These credentials must be from any "domain administrator". If you are logging in to the pc and the server with the default administrator ACCOUNT with the same password then yes that name can access your server DIRECTLY or remotely. Just change the password for the account in the server.Note: You can't use the local admin account from the server to do domain admin stuff. Make sure you're using an account with domain admin rights.

Solve : 2 Problems: computer restarts and updating?

Answer»

Hey guys having some problems with my computer and hoping you can help.  Problem number one is my computer keeps rebooting during the start up process.  I can get the computer to go past its POST check, to the windows welcome SCREEN, click on a user, the computer will partially load it start up programs and then REBOOT.  Never experienced anything like this before.  I have disabled all start up services and programs through msconfig except for those that have to be there of course.  Is this a hard drive problem?

Second I know for a fact that this is a legit copy of windows xp however I can't update my computer.  And no this question has nothing to do with how do you get around legitcheck.  Everytime I go to the windows update site, or just plain or microsoft.com, be it manually or by using the update button I can get there, it tires to check the software and comes back with the express or custom options.  From there no matter what I do I get a page displayed that says "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below MIGHT help you solve the problem."  Of course we all know how much of a help $icrosoft is so trying to get some help here with these since they can't/wont.

dxdiag to follow in the next post and yes I know my drivers are way out of date I can't update them without having either SP2, or SP3, or .net framework 2.0 etc. etc. etc.  The only way I can log on is through safe mode so the results of my dxdiag might be a little off.

Thanks

Sorry for the multiple dxdiag posts cn't get it all on one for some reason Quote

I have disabled all start up services and programs through msconfig except for those that have to be there of course.

How do you know which services are needed or not ? ?
Did you have a list from somewhere ? ?
This may very well be the source of your issues...Thanks for the reply Patio.  First off I didn't disable anything until I started having problems, and then when I did I started disablining nonessential services and start up apps from there, as well as other trouble shooting techniques.  In ANSWER to your question as to how do I know what can be run and what can't I have been a tech for about ten years (freelancing right now my own business) with certs in A+ Net+, MSCE, Unix, Linux (redhat), Server 2003, CIW, and Security+.

Ya ya I know a guy with that much know how should be able to figure it out but hey sometimes we all need a hand.  I can't determine what is causing my computer to randomly reboot.  I have never run into a problem like this during my time as a tech and the usual sources (friends also in IT) are unavailable working on contracts out of the country right now.  I suppose I should have put this in my other post but I did a complete reformat of the hard drive and installed a clean copy of xp after having these issues so I am as sure as I can be it is not a software related issue.

Any thoughts?  Thanks again.
I'd turn off 'Auto Reboot on System Failure' then see what the bsod says.
You could also check the Event Viewer logs for hints. Quote from: Fed on November 16, 2008, 03:24:50 PM

Agreed.
The next 3 culprits in no particular order would be CPU fan, HDD failure or possible flaky PSU.
If the fan works properly then move on to the HDD...DLoad and run the free diagnostics from the manuf. site...
As to the PSU borrow a known good one of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there for 24 hours...
Good Luck and let us know.Ok couple of quick observations as I log in to check out replies.

One I thought possible HDD or PS failure to.  According to my bios readings everything is were it should be voltage wise temp wise etc on the PS.  A power supply on the fritz though doesn't quite seem to jive with the problem.  POST is fine, startup is fine, windows welcome screen is fine, desktop, starting to load up startup items and then somewhere in there is when the computer reboots evertime.  This is why I disabled everything in msconfig thinking that there was some service or applet causing a software conflict.

A power supply on the fritz though doesn't quite explain why my OS is stable in safe mode.  I have been on the computer for 5 hours now in safe mode and no issues.  Also did swap the PS just to check and appeared to be no problems as in no changes from before.

I have had spontaneous reboots of computer's from faulty HDD usually just after POST and usually owing to dust getting into the HD case.  I have never seen a computer reboot as far into the startup process as my computer is currently getting and it be a HD issue.

Unless I am missing something it doesn't appear to be HDD or PS related.  As far as the CPU goes everything there appears to be where it should be.  Fan speed wise, voltage wise etc.  BTW this system is a non OC'd system so there aren't any issues there.

I can't see a RAM issue never had a computer boot at all if it bad RAM.  Video card works fine.  Pulled the MB just to give it a visual inspection.  Ya know sometimes if you get a power surge or the like you can find black burn marks on the MB.  Everything looks ok no broken pins, connectors, etc.

I can't see a software conflict as this is a fresh copy of xp.  Could be missing something there though I suppose.  Maybe something that didn't copy during install or something.  Usually get an error message though when something like that happens.

Going to try Fed's idea and see what happens.  Also going to run the HD diag. and see what happens there anmd let you know.  Other thoughts?

ThanksSince you removed the MBoard double check to see the heatsink/fan combo are seated properly.
Just as i typed that i realised this would result in shutdowns...and you have restarts....DoH.

It is sounding more like a Windows/or software issue. The fact it runs fine in safemode without restarts could also point to a driver conflict since safe mode will use minimal drivers ...any new hardware installed lately ? ?

I also thought a corrupt Profile may do this. Create a new profile and boot to it in normal mode to eliminate this as a possibility.

Just throwing out ideas in general that you can easily test on your end.

Solve : Corrupt login profile?

Answer»

Hi,

When a boot my system, occasionally it says your profile can't be read and is corrupt.
It LOGS with a temporary profile.

However, I can get it back by logging off a couple of times or by rebooting.

How can i fix this?

THANKSI found this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151That article says how to create a new user having a profile of an old user.

In my case my own profile gets damaged sometimes.
Backup shouldn't solve the purpose as the files will be the same in backup also.

Any ways to repair the profile.Sorry, I read it too quickly.

Can you possible try a System Restore to before the problem?

Any recent changes? (downloads, installs, hardware changes, ect...)Minor changes might have happened.
Therefore no idea of which date should i pick the system restore.

Also how do i verify that it has safely worked.
As the corrupt message doesn't come every time. When did this whole problem start?Carbon gave you very good idea.

This is not true.
Every profile contains some system files, and your data files.
When a profile gets corrupt, that means its system files got corrupt, not your data files.
When you create new profile, it creates new system files, and then you can move old data files from old profile to a new profile.

Best explanation i've seen in AWHILE...It started a month back.

Ok, so you mean to say create a new profile and copy over the data to that ONE and then rename it to original name, right?

How do i find out, which files i have to leave?
i.e. the system files

If that's the reason, can't i copy over the system files from some other profile to here. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on September 08, 2008, 03:10:27 AM

It started a month back.

Click Start then All PROGRAMS now move to Accessories and then System Tools and select System Restore at the bottom.

Now pick a date before the problem started (say about six weeks ago) and restore your computer to that time.Don't want to use the system restore.

Many minor modifications have been done on the system during a month's time and I don't want to loose them.

That should be the last option if nothing worksWhen was your last restore point?Where is the restore option is Windows Server 2003 sp2?

Why do you refuse to listen, and do as told?
If you go to the link, Carbon provided at the very beginning of this thread, and READ, it explains everything.
If you did right away, this thread would be only 3 posts long, not 13.

Solve : Window 2008 Domain migration?

The company intend to upgrade the Win 2k to Win 2K8

I upgrade the AD migration on the workstation, I create the old DNS as a forwarder the DNS record to new Secondary DNS (New DNS record ). The workstation as a DHCP CLIENT, the problem is the DHCP don't know which one is new DNS or Old DNS. I don't know how to make the workstation get the new DNS record from Secondary DNS.

Do it any experience system administrator face this problem and RESOLUTION? SINCE I'm having TROUBLE understanding exactly what you're asking, I'll just provide you with some links that I used when I migrated to 2008. My migration was from 2003 to 2008, but most of the information should be good. It will hopefully provide you with a starting POINT for more help.

Solve : Restricted access still domain user able to change shared printer property?

Answer»

Hi

Within Active Directory environment (win2003 server) I have GOT 11 DOMAINS users.

A new network printer Samsung CLX-6210FX installed on the server 2003 and shared

On the server right click Samsung  Printer  > Properties  >  Security tab for the group “Everyone “  set as below

http://i46.tinypic.com/qobogo.jpg

Although “ Everyone “ group has been given permission for print only , why would a domain user still be able  to change the color as in the snap shot (for a client PC) below

http://i48.tinypic.com/2nkkw94.jpg

Thanks
Seems to me like changing the color printing option is part of printing, which is allowed. What you might find is that the changes users make are one-time only i.e when they go back to the printer properties after changing a setting, it has reverted back to its original value. Alternatively, it is possible that the changes they make only apply to the user that made the change rather then every user of the printer.Late to the party, but here's your answer:

"Print" permissions will grant access to "Printing Preferences."

"Manage Printers" will grant access to "Printing Defaults."

Those options you mentioned are under "Printing Preferences."

One season late, but hey, someone might find this useful. If you have access to it, the Microsoft 70-270 book goes into Printing permissions quite deeply.

But as others have said, this looks like a NORMAL function of "printing".

The manage printers permission lets you customise printer settings, like ports and things.

The manage documents permission lets you pause or delete files in the print queue.

I don't think any of the print level permissions will give you the control you're after.  It might be possible that there is an add-in PACK for GPO that you might be able to use.

Sleep doesn't work in batch.

Anyway, why do you want to do this?  What purpose will it serve?

You might be able to do it using the "ping sleep work-around", but again, I don't really understand why you'd want to do this...

An explaination of the "ping sleep work-around":

Useing the ping command in the following way can effectively mimic the desired output of a "sleep" command

ping 1.1.1.1 -n 1 -w 1000

NOTES:
1.1.1.1 MUST BE AN INVALID IP ON YOUR NETWORK
The number following "-w" is the number of milliseconds to "wait", therefore 1000 = 1 second, 5000 = 5 seconds.
The "pinging 1.1.1.1 with ..." dialog STILL displaysping 1.1.1.1 -n 1 -w 1000 > nul

will not display the "pinging 1.1.1.1 with..." part.

Solve : Bat file failure?

Answer»

I'm executing a DOS bat FILE on Windows 2003 VM (virtual machine) from a Power Builder application.  On the development VM the bat file executes OK.  On the production VM, the bat file fails.  It does not appear to be a permissions problem.  But, if you go to a DOS prompt on that machine, not all DOS commands are available.  Is there something that would make the DOS environments different on the two machines?

I think VMWare handles USB quite well, but I don't know from first hand experience.VMWare handles USB better then any other Virtual Machine I've used.it might help if we could be told what commands fail! Possibly the development VM has Resource Kit tools installed?

Solve : Exchange 2003 Global Address List problem?

Answer»

We have one Windows 2003 domain, one Exchange 2003 server, and one Exchange organization. This is our first and only Exchange server and it is a separate computer from the Domain Controller. We have one user account here whose name does not appear in the Outlook address book while the book is accessing the Global Address List. The name does not appear while USING Outlook Web ACCESS either. The name does appear, however, on the Exchange Server when previewing the Global Address List. The user account is an old one and is not configured to hide its address. It has not appeared in the GAL since we started using Exchange about 1 1/2 years ago. All other ACCOUNTS, older and newer than the problem one, do appear. I have had the Recipient Update Service update and even rebuild, but this has not HELPED. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!check the all users list you should fine the e-mail address there update your server pack and it should resolve this problemThat is weird that only 1 email has this problem and that updating Recipients doesn't make it show. The only thing I could think of is to DELETE the mailbox for this user and recreate it. The Topic is 5 years old and he's no longer a Member...

NOTE: When you see a poster's name in black they have closed their account.

Solve : Windows 2000 Terminal Server RDP Question?

Answer» HI Guys,

I have set up a Windows 2000 Terminal Server SP4 which works fine. One annoyance I have at the moment is the 8bit colour depth that the RDP clients receive. Most applications LOOK a bit odd.

Windows 2000 Terminal Server uses RDP Version 5.0 which to my knowledge restricts RDP clients to 8bit (256 Colours) Colour depth. RDP Version 5.1 uses 24bit colour depth (to my knowledge) and 5.2 - 6.0 even more.....32bit I think Windows 2003 server uses.

My QUESTION is.......

Are we able to update the RDP version from 5.0 to 5.1 on Windows 2000 Terminal Server? I would hope I can because at the moment the clients are pretty useless.

Thanks,You probably don't want to hear this (especially after three months of your TOPIC being unanswered), but Windows 2000 has NO support from Microsoft and little-to-no support from other vendors either.

Depending on the specs of the server itself, it may be best to just upgrade to Server 2003.  Server 2008 may be a STRETCH, though.Just so you know this is not possible with Server 2000. You are limited to 256 colours.

Solve : Dns Redirection?

Answer»

Hello,

I'm trying to get users to AUTHENTICATE themselves through my locally hosted WEBSITE before accessing the internet. I've SPENT awhile looking into dns redirection and it SEEMS to be the way to do it.

I've managed to redirect someone from google to my website by creating a forward lookup zone, What I'm wondering is how can I redirect all the traffic to my website?

Thankyou, Any help is Appreciated
