Solve : Outlook Exchange Server 2003 Help??

Answer»

Not the biggest Outlook buff here, this is actually the first time I've ever tried to use it. Here's my situation:

My college uses Microsoft Outlook EXCHANGE Server 2003 to provide school email access. Here is the url: http://mail.insideranken.org Is it possible to CONFIGURE my home computer and my laptop, both running Office XP, to sync with my school email? If so, what information would I need from my admin, if any, and how would I configure it?

Thanks in advance.

-RyanYou would need to know:

  • account name
  • password
  • POP or IMAPI server
  • In case of a POP connection: SMTP adress
  • What ports POP/SMTP or IMAPI use (Unless they use the default ports in case of a non-secured connection

If you want to connect to the Exchange features from your home PC, I think you'll need to set up a VPN connection to your COMPANY's LAN first. Thanks, I'll try to get that info from my IT department. I'll re-post if I need anymore HELP.

I think you can simply rip out the pins you don't need. But don't quote me on that.

if i had needle nose pliers, i might try it... but i dont. the 9 pin is just for the later version of the card that has a tv tuner built in (mine just has a next to useless 9 pin s-video plug)I believe RAPTOR was being facetious...Quote

No, I was on the phone with a senior staff member who recommended that I pull out the pins for a customer because the converter for VGA to DVI didn't fit. 4 pins too many.

But he also said that if it didn't work, the guy could come back and get a new converter. Quote

i dont see why removing the four pins wouldnt, the wires still go in the same place, they arnt needed in one area, why should they be in another?

oh, good news, job program is go, worked today. replaced a PSU with a dead fan, and a dead CD burner. also re installed windows 2000 on one, and XP on another, very simple stuff, but, heh, if it gets me out of school even ALITTLE early to deal with computers (i would rather deal with computers, they can only beep at you), then i am happy. i am going to buy another board for this PC, and use this as a multimedia centre PC (so i dont have to have all of my danged movies on my gaming PC)

i also found an old working 52x cd drive in the junk bin, was jammed, i just used the emergency release on it. it has the play\fastforward BUTTON, and the stop\eject button, so i can supply power to it, and run a cable to my amp and use it as a stand alone unit . also found an old IDE controler card (PCI), going to test it later. the shop is locally owned by the manager, he needs all the help he can get (and my wage isnt coming out of his wallet, so he cant complain, free labor to him). i am going to go on a search through his shop if he will let me for any old socket 370 boards, i can build a few servers, i have 6 old socket 370 CPU's that WORK, 1 700mhz celeron, 4 700 mhz PIII's, and one 1.4 or 1.5 ghz celeron. the PII's and the 1.4 need a home, so, i am going to GIVE them one. what i am going to do with 8 running PC's (this one, the old 370's, and my new one) i do not know, but, you can never be too prepared. once i get them built, i can put them to various uses, firewall, internet, server, ect. all of the CPU's came from HP's (odd, but TRUE).
my computer has suffered some... minor injuries since the last few crashes...

the dents where done with my keyboard (bottom corner in the pic), the half moon was done with my fist when the stupid thing fell off shortly after a crash (i had not hit it with the keyboard then, it just fell off for no reason)Quote

Solve : How do you change the Language??

Answer»

ok i'm trying to change the language to my computer to spanish so i can send it to my cousin in mexico. i tried the "regional and language settings", but it only converts some text. so i called microsoft and they said go to support.microsoft.com. i did and all i can find was the Language Interface packs. after i proved that my comp was genuine it only offers a readme file. but i can't find anywhere to download this stuff. any help would be appreciated. thanksYou can't. All versions of Windows are localized.

The only way you can ever change the language is by either buying a copy of windows XP in that particular language or by buying a newlaptop that comes with software that does allow you to choose the language...CALL Microsoft back and tell them Raptor told you that. *censored* microsoft. lol they assured me, but what would they know. thanks raptorQuote

Whoa here, bad advice given. Shame Raptor, shame GX1_MAN, shame patio. You are all sentenced to 12 hours in the guillotine, the ONE right out there on main street. Win XP (English) definitely does support other languages: List of languages supported in Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003.

Last year, a Korean friend who is a US resident has a relative visiting from Korea. He wanted to send email to Korea, in Korean. I researched the issue and learned that, indeed, Korean and many other languages can be installed on Win XP. I tested the procedure on my computer and after successfully installing Korean, I did the same on her computer. I had removed Korean but reinstalled it after reading this post. Note that this did not involve downloading anything. As I recall, I did have to insert my Win XP CD the first time I installed Korean. I'll type a few Korean characters in this message; I realize they may not display properly on your computer. Here goes: [ch48141] [ch12615] [ch12615] [ch12623] [ch12599] [ch12623] [ch12643] [ch12616] [ch12640].

The Korean visitor mentioned above had a keyboard guide and had also used an English keyboard in Korea, so he was able to compose email in Korean.

Installing Korean, or any foreign language, adds a language bar which appears in the Notification area, or it can be positioned at the top of the desktop screen. It ALLOWS the user to switch back and forth between languages by simply clicking on the toolbar. Here an image with it placed at top of the screen:

I tried installing Spanish and it did appear in the language bar. However, I saw no change in actual characters TYPED from my keyboard. I briefly searched for some info and found a reference indicating a keyboard change is needed. See The easiest way I know of to write in Spanish with Windows XP
. I did not pursue that further, but this will at least give Silencer RPMs some info with which to proceed.I'd very much like to use my copy of Windows XP in French, how do I go about doing that, Soybean?!

Edit: After a second thought:

What you're showing me is the keyboard input language... Not translation the entire Operating System to Korean.

Raptor French will cause you to Oui Oui. :-?

Oops, I see I mis-understood the original post. When I wrote my reply, I was thinking he just wanted to send email to his cousin in Mexico. But, having read it again, he apparently wants to actually ship the computer. You are RELIEVED of the sentencing to the guillotine.

You are correct about the installation I explained being the keyboard input language. With it installed, Korean will appear in any application (Word, Notepad, Wordpad, Outlook Express, etc.). But, Windows still displays menus, icons, etc., in English.

French is one of the language options for keyboard input language, if you want to do that.

Solve : MS Outlook: problems with attachments?

Answer»

Please, I need help with MS Outlook:

The problem happens when I try to send any message with a just heavy attachment (let´s say + 200K). No problem exists when the messages do not have attachments.

Normally, after a few seconds, the outgoing TRAY becomes empty once the message has been sent. In my case, instead of that, a sending error warning appears below at the screen and a window comes up with a text LIKE this:

“The task of sending [emailprotected] has notified the error 0x8004210B. The operation has exhausted the time by waiting for a response from the SMTP outgoing server”

Meanwhile, the message still keeps into the outgoing tray and it NEVER pass to the sent messages tray. It seems like the message has never gone out. But,… in spite of that, the message was sent out!! The addressee effectively receives it. This matter makes me CONFUSED and the worst is there is no certainty if the messages were sent or not.

I tried with re-installing the MS Outlook, and nothing happened. Then I REINSTALLED the Windows XP SP2 and the Office 2003, and nothing. Similar problem occurs when I use the Outlook Express. I have another PC in the network, with the same MS Outlook accounts, and I do not have this problem with the emails.

I also tried by disabling the antivirus (Bit defender) and/or the zone-alarm, but the problem remains.

Sincerely, I don´t know what else to do. I hope you can give me a clue. Thank you very much :-/.

Solve : Help with batch file and IF command?

Answer»

I am trying to write a batch FILE on a Windows 2003 Server that will do two things to hopefully make my life a little easier. The first thing I WANT it to do is search through a log file and see if a word or phrase exists. Second if it finds a match in the log file I want it to email the log file to me.

I some what have a working file for each piece but am unable to get them to work together. For the search piece I am able to run this:

find /i /c "test" "D:\Housekeeping Scripts\Logs\Test.txt"

I was redirecting this into another txt file where it would store:

---------- D:\HOUSEKEEPING SCRIPTS\LOGS\TEST.TXT: 0

That works, and I can email the log file to myself everytime the script runs whether it has found a match or not but what I REALLY want if for it to only email it to me if it finds a match. I can't seem to tell if find is supposed to return a result CODE or not.

What I would like to see is something like this:

if (find more than one match)
{
send me an email (have a tool for this already)
{

Was trying to just use the DOS IF command but I couldn't get it to work. It doesn't have to be the DOS IF command though but it does have to be something I can incorporate into other scripts.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Solve : RAID Problem?

Answer»

No problem.

BTW, XP x64 can SEE GPT as WELL:

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/GPT_FAQ.mspx

Sorry I didn't mention that earlier. My experience with XP x64 is rather limited (I shouldn't be surprised, either, since XP x64 is actually a nerfed Server 2003 x64...)

Either way, I'm glad you got it all worked out!So what are the imaging options on a GPT DRIVE ? ?
I was unaware that ACRONIS hates it...
And i've been singing their praises awhile.Until Acronis catches up, we're pretty much limited to Symantec Ghost Solution Suite 2.5 (Ghost 11.5).

http://eval.symantec.com/mktginfo/downloads/GSS_2.0_Vista_FAQ_Partner.pdf

Vista/Server 2008's ImageX might be another option. I haven't played around with it yet, though...

Solve : Install Windows with no CD drive?

Answer»

Good...now let's throw Ubuntu on there..... That was ACTUALLY my ORIGINAL plan ... then I decided to stick with what I know.
I'm now trying to clone the drive to a 20GB because 2GB really isn't enough ... I thought it might be, but no way.
I've failed once (tried using HDClone within WINDOWS. SEEMED to work but won't boot. I think if I ran fixmbr or something it may do, but ... no CD drive), now I brought in a floppy drive to boot from and hopefully this time it will work.

Solve : help with getting into this old server?

Answer»

It has like 4 gigs of RAM and a 3.0ghz processor but it's running on 'Windows Server 2003'.

It requires a password and I don't know what it is. It comes from a business that was taken over by the business that my dad works for and they didn't need it so he gave it to me.

I didn't need the information on there so I was going to put on a new Operating System, but when I was about to install it the setup told me there was no hard drive disk connected. But I've looked inside and there are a few of them. I looked it up and I found it was a common problem caused by incompatible drivers or something and I couldn't change the SATA mode to IDE in BIOS on this particular computer. Which I read would fix it.

I also tried using a program that would allow me to change the passwords by booting from the CD with the program on it but it didn't work because I needed to shut it down cleanly and it's not possible because I can't shut down on the login screen, the option is not selectable.

If I format the disk I'd need to install a new OS which I can't.

There isn't a guest account just an administrator.

I also can't GO into safe mode because F8 goes into some other menu that doesn't HELP.

Now I don't know what to do from here? What can I try? If you need more information ask me.Look up the drivers for the controller and upon installation of the new OS press F6 for RAID/SCSI drivers, then USE floppy drive or thumb drive to mount the hard drive controller drivers, and then you should be able to DESTROY all that data on that system, wipe it clean and turn it into a clean build.

Other easier option is install a new PCI Hard drive controller and use that to run your IDE or SATA drives and set that as the primary boot controller in the bios if you cant find drivers or a way to mount those other drives with F6 on install of OS from CD or DVD.
Hard Drive controllers are cheap usually $20 to $50 depending on brand and features.

Solve : .adm language question(registry editing through notebook)?

Answer»

Is there any way to auto CONFIGURE the state of a group policy object when creating them through notebook?

example...creating this policy using notebook and want it to auto enable or disable the state when I add the template to the administrative template in the group policy object editor.

CLASS MACHINE

CATEGORY "IPSEC Services"
KEYNAME "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\IPSEC"

POLICY "NoDefaultExempt"
PART "NoDefaultExempt"
NUMERIC DEFAULT 1
VALUENAME "NoDefaultExempt"

END PART
END POLICY
END CATEGORY

How do i get this to auto enable or do i have to PHYSICALLY go into the Group Policy Object Editor and enable or disable it? Reason I ask is that I have a lot more code to ENTER and it would EASIER to have them auto configure. (Using Windows Server 2003 Standard)

Just had WinPatrol ask if I wanted .jpg files to open with IE instead of VuePrint. Told it no.

Looks good. There are a few THINGS to take care of.

I am able to get the windows updates now.

I have resisted installing sp3 because so many people had problems with it. Read somewhere to download it to a file, burn it on a cd and reboot to safe mode and then install it. What do you suggest?

BTW--Thanks for all the help you have given me. If you were a woman, I'd give you a kiss--a man and I'd shake your hand and buy you a burger and a coke.

))

Next?

ziggy

You can install SP3 from the Windows Update site as soon as we are done. I can't think of any reason to put it on a disk and install in safe mode.

Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall:

*AutoUpdate
*Java(TM) 6 Update 6
*Java(TM) 6 Update 7

You have multiple antivirus installed. This is never advised as it only causes problems so uninstall all but one.

avast! Antivirus
AVG Free 8.0
StopSign Internet Security <- Don't keep this one.

----------

Let's clear out the programs we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if launched accidentally. These steps will also help secure the work you have done.
.

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox
  • Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /u
  • Then hit Enter.
.
.
The above procedure will:
  • Delete:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
    • Reset the clock settings.
    • Hide file extensions, if required.
    • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
    • Set a new, clean Restore Point.
    .
    ----------

    1. Double click OTMoveIt3.exe to launch it.
Vista users right click and choose Run As Administrator
    2. Click on the CleanUp! button.
    3. OTMoveIt2 will download a list from the Internet, if your firewall or other defensive programs alerts you, allow it access.
    4. Click YES at the next prompt (list downloaded, Do you want to begin cleanup process?)
    5. Once complete exit out of OTMoveIt3

    ----------

Go to Microsoft Windows Update and get all critical updates.

    ----------

Here are some great FREE tools to help you keep from getting infected again. These tools use little or no resources so won't slow down your PC.

Concerned about Browser Security? Consider using Mozilla Firefox. With more than 15,000 improvements, Firefox 3 is faster, safer and smarter than ever before.

For Internet Explorer 7 users there is IE7Pro. IE7Pro is a must have add-on for Internet Explorer, which includes a lot of features and tweaks to make your IE friendlier, more useful, more secure and customizable.

To prevent unknown applications from being installed on your computer install WinPatrol 2008
    * Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

I suggest using WOT - Web of Trust. WOT is a free Internet security addon for your browser. It will keep you safe from online scams, identity theft, spyware, spam, viruses and unreliable shopping sites. WOT warns you before you interact with a risky website. It's easy and it's free.

SpywareBlaster - Secure your Internet Explorer to make it harder for ActiveX programs to run on your computer. Also stop certain cookies from being added to your computer when running Mozilla based browsers like Firefox.
    * Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware
    * If you don't know what ActiveX controls are, see here

Check out Keeping Yourself Safe On The Web for tips and free tools to help keep you safe in the future.

Also see Slow Computer? It May Not Be Malware for free cleaning/maintenance tools to help keep your computer running smooth.
Am using FireFox except when I update windows.

Will download the others suggested that I don't have.

Avast or AVG--which do you like better?

    Again--Thanks.

    Personally I prefer Avast.

    Your welcome.

Solve : Laptop keeps shutting down?

    Answer»

    Hello

I have a Toshiba XP Home latop which connects to the Internet via a Broadband modem. The laptop is usually connected to the Internet which runs in the background even if I am just typing in WORD.

Fairly often it will shut down for no apparent reason, but shutdown is almost guaranteed when accessing, say, YouTube. I have had to use the Toshiba recovery disk twice to 'recover' my system, but I have lost all of my programmes, files and folders on each occasion.

What might be the reason for this, please? It appears, on the surface, that this may be a hardware problem - maybe fan overheating, but shutdown occurs even when the computer environment is not warm.

I am posting below some details of my system, if these help, and would be grateful for some advice.

I am happy to invest a little money if this will improve things.

Incidentally, the CD-ROM drive does not work correctly: it sees only original CDs and not, say, Word documents burned onto blank CDs.

    SteveIs the Laptop overheating?

Most common cause for laptop to shutdown on you, especially when running an application that is CPU intensive is that its CPU reports to the main board that the temperature is too hot and it protects itself by shutting down without any ability to save anything.

Toshiba's have had a bad rash of overheats over the last few years. When the laptop shuts down like this feel the laptops bottom and sides. Is there any very hot areas. If so you are dealing with a thermal shutdown.

Fans also cause this issue when they fail, but generally a failed CPU fan will cause the laptop or desktop to boot for about 10 seconds or so and then shut down always x-many seconds in from boot when the speedo on the fan is detected as not spinning.Does that laptop restart if it locks up, too?Hello and thanks for your replies.

No, the laptop does not restart automatically - it has to be manually restarted.

Yes, DaveLembke there are a couple of hot areas, usually, when it shuts down - though not always. What's the difference between a 'thermal shutdown' and a fan problem?

Would it be an idea, if it is the fan, to remove and clean it myself?

    Cheers

    Steve

    Solve : Ad a 2003 DC to a 2000 DC system?

    Answer»

I want to add a 2003 domain controller to my existing 2000 NETWORK. I keep ending up with

"The version of the Active Directory schema of the source forest is not compatible with the version of Active Directory on this computer."

When I perfrom the forest and domain PREP, the screen just flashes, so I am not sure that those are taking as well. You can't add a 2003 DC to a 2000 domain....you can't go backwards.

You have to take the copy of 2003 server CD and PUT into each 2000 DC a you have in the root of your forest and than run forest prep. This updates the schema on the older domain to HANDLE the new objects in a 2003 domain.

Don't forget to do all your updates to your 2000 DC before doing the forestprep.....

Also this would be a good time to do disk CLEANUP and a defrag.....

I can't see the forest because of the

.. trees! Thanks, that did it for me. The only other problem I ran into was the DC was a little stubborn, so I just demoted it and all worked after running the adprep on the master 2000. Only 50 more steps and I will be done Glad it worked for you!

Solve : Wodpws Power Shell. Why doyou ignore it??

    Answer»

Inasmuch as the Batch file structure now in use in Windows dates back to NT, one would think that more users would rater use Windows Power Shell. Or hay not?
    Quote

Using a new admin-focused scripting language, more than 130 standard command LINE tools, and consistent syntax and utilities, Windows PowerShell allows IT professionals to more easily control system administration and accelerate automation. Windows PowerShell is easy to adopt, learn, and use, because it works with your existing IT infrastructure and existing script investments, and because it runs on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2003.
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa830112.aspx
So, do you use it? Do you agree that for simple tasks Batch File is better?

Curious minds need to know Reply now!.
I hate DISLIKE windows powershell. If only for the sole reason that it uses .NET... or at least is friendly with .NET classes.OH NO!
    Sorry I asked.
Because .NET is used to hide

    GOAT PORNY

    Should I ad a poll?
    huh?

Well, I prefer non .NET solutions. I just wouldn't feel right FORCING a HUGE download just to use a utility I wrote.

COM will live on so I don't see any reason to move away from it- also it makes the smart choice and denies implementation inheritance altogether- which is a stupid OOP idea anyway, since you can't really know how to override a method properly.

Powershell, well I haven't tried it anyway so I really couldn't say.

Agree. The point I tried to make with humor is the security and privacy risk of the .NET stuff. I would not want something like that until is it compact and open source. You just don't know what is inside. I do not want to share in another man's sins, even when I don't see the sins.

Anybody else? Do you think Power Shell is OK?Actually- I think the .NET framework source COMES with the professional, enterprise and team-system versions, but I'm not 100% sure.

Solve : CD formated for Windows NT?

    Answer»

Is there any difference in a CD formatted for Windows NT verse Windows XP? I am submitting a proposal that explicitly states information " shall be read-only CDs formatted for Microsoft NT"As far as I am aware, there is no such thing as a "CD formatted for Windows NT". CD-ROMS have their own filesystem(s) which are readable by a variety of computer operating systems.

Have a read of these articles

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_9660

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Disk_Format

I guess it would be technically possibe to use The FAT or NTFS formats to format CDs, but I've never heard of it actually being done. CDs are formatted by the manufacturer.
It depends on the software you are using to read the CDs particular format - not the operating system.
By the way, XP uses the NT format.

Quote from: JJ 3000 on April 01, 2009, 01:04:09 AM

I guess it would be technically possibe to use The FAT or NTFS formats to format CDs

I don't think so. Even if an emulation of one of these filesystems were possible on a CD ROM, (how would you make it?) no computer could read it.

    Quote
but I've never heard of it actually being done.

Neither have I. Optical disks (CD, CDR, CDRW, DVD etc.) may appear to work the same was as HD-based volumes, but the underlying file systems are *totally* different, right down to the sector size. So they aren't NTFS or FATxx. As the above Wikipedia pages make clear. Optical drives use a totally different technology from magnetic hard drives and the filesystems reflect that.

hodges, are you writing this proposal hoping that "read-only CDs formatted for Microsoft NT" are somehow possible? If this idea originated with somebody ELSE, you should get back to them and get them to clarify just what they mean.

Why do you have to CALL me out like that?

There is no law of physics that prevents the CD-ROM manufacturers from adopting any file system that they choose! CD manufacturers don't want their file systems tied to Micro$oft's or (cr)Apple's, or any one elses file system. In addition, the CD manufacturers wanted non-PC devices (like CD players) to be able to read their format (ISO-9660). However it is still theoretically possible for CDs to use FAT or NTFS.Quote from: JJ 3000 on April 01, 2009, 01:50:27 AM
Why do you have to call me out like that?

I was not aware that I was doing so. I was continuing the discussion. If that involved disagreeing with you, then so be it. No attack implied or intended.

    Quote
There is no law of physics that prevents the CD-ROM manufacturers from adopting any file system that they choose!

There are "laws of physics" which mean that some methods of storing data on optical disks work well, with acceptable error rates and economically manufacturable hardware and media, and some don't, which resulted in ISO9660. NTFS and FAT32 are filesystems which are used on magnetic disks. A CD-ROM is a optical disk which cannot rely on error concealment or interpolation, and therefore requires a higher reliability of the RETRIEVED data. Therefore NTFS or FAT32 would be unsuitable for a practical data storage scheme using optical media.

Anyhow, this isn't helping the OP, which is what we are here for.

Maybe the OP merely means a CD-ROM which is readable by a computer running Windows NT, (itself a quite old operating system), or "Windows NT family", which means Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003 & 2008, Vista , Windows 7 etc.

In which case ISO 9660 would do the job.

    Quote
NTFS or FAT32 would be unsuitable for optical media.
I agree. It would be unsuitable but not impossible.

However, we are not helping the OP in the slightest by CARRYING on this technical discussion of file systems.

Hodges, what is the exact wording of the form? The exact quote was "CDs shall be read-only CDs formatted for Microsoft Windows NT" I knew of no difference in CD format for any windows version, thus the question.

Windows NT 4, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista is ISO 9660 Level 1, 2, 3, Joliet, and ISO 9660:1999.

Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME is the same expect no ISO 9660:1999 extension.

    Solve : System restore software?

    Answer»

no i can't. i did see a messege saying do you want windows to fix display settings. i clicked yes, but nothing happened. i'm going to try a safe mode restore.hi evil I had to download a new driver to get my display back. System restore in the safe mode still works, so i better quit while i'm ahead. OK while you are at a point that is working lets try to finish this up now.

Download OTCleanIt.exe and save it to your Desktop.

    • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
    • Click the CleanUp! button.
    • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
    • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
    • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it yourself.
    .
    ----------

Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one
Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will enable your computer to roll-back to a clean working state if needed.
    • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click System Restore
    • Choose the radio button marked Create a Restore Point on the first screen then click Next Give the Restore Point a name then click Create.
    • The new restore point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
    • Next go to Start > Run and type Cleanmgr
    • Click OK
    • Click the More Options Tab.
    • Click Clean Up in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created clean one.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide or Windows Vista System Restore Guide
    .
    ----------

Use the Secunia Software Inspector to check for out of date software.
    • Click Start Now
    • Check the box next to Enable thorough system inspection.
    • Click Start
    • Allow the scan to finish and scroll down to see if any updates are needed.
    • Update anything listed.
    .
    ----------

I suggest using WOT - Web of Trust. WOT is a free Internet security addon for your browser. It will keep you safe from online scams, identity theft, spyware, spam, viruses and UNRELIABLE shopping sites. WOT warns you before you interact with a risky website. It's EASY and it's free.

Solve : re-installed Windows XP & now have no sound??

    Answer»

I had this same problem with a computer I reformatted. I tried everything; updated drivers, uninstalled and rebooted. My volume control told me there was no sound device installed but my device manager said it was installed and working properly. I went to the HD site, downloaded a diagnostic disk, ran it and voila, there was my sound. Heya Dave,

Quick question... what is the HD site? Also, would that fix the error 39 I keep getting in regards to the sound?

thanks Have a look at this MSKB article:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823308/en-us

Something there may steer you in the right direction.I ran a dxdiag and apparantly, I don't have a soundcard in my computer? I am going insane.

I know that there is a soundcard in this computer.Below is the dxdiag that I ran *before* I re-installed Windows XP Home. Obviously, you can see that I do have a soundcard simply by looking at it. Yes, I have issues with my graphics card.. which is what has set this all in motion.. I only re-installed on some obviously very bad advice from Warcraft Tech Support.

I have updated the drivers.. unistnalled the drivers.. updated the drivers.. uninstalled the drivers.. updated the drivers.. uninstalled the drivers... too many times.

Doing so is obviously not helping. I cannot find any info for the error code 39 that keeps popping up.

I am at a complete loss as to what to do now.

Did you do post 14 suggestions?
Just to rule out that one.Yes I did.

I went there and the thread doesn't apply to my particular problem... some of it does but it applies to a different sound card apparantly.

I can't get drivers for this model computer from the Compaq site as they are for Vista only... the computer was originally loaded with Vista.. something I changed first day I got it.. lol.. and it was working perfectly with the first install of Windows XP Home.. just this re-install has gone dodgy.

To sum it all up, while I thank you all for the help you have provided me with and I appreciate everyone's efforts, I've decided that if I continue 'tinkering' with it, I'll make matters worse so I've booked it into a repair shop I know and trust for Tuesday.

Hopefully, it'll get fixed pretty quickly so when it comes home, I'll update this thread and hopefully I'll be able to post the solution to the issues for future reference.

Thanks again Ok good luck but i think you misunderstood.
I was on about post number 14 of this thread on how to uninstall the actual card and the driver then reinstall them.
I think this may be what you are looking for but if you are fed up of messing (and my, can't it get on your nerves?) and are not confident then ignore it and get it done at the shop.

http://www.new-drivers.com/files/sound/Realtek/?gclid=CIv86v6U7JkCFRAgZwodkz59RQGod.. so sorry, I was looking at the wrong thread when answering your question just before.. lol.

I've faffed about.. taken things out.. put them back in... uninstalled.. re-installed.. just too much.

The original problem has been going on for almost 3 1/2 weeks now so I was going to have to take it into a repair shop no matter what... lol.

I am confident of actually installing the new graphics card myself.. no worries there.. but I really just need someone with more knowledge than myself to check out the rest of the computer... so, might as well get all issues fixed at once.

Thanks again to everyone who helped me... I appreciate the time and effort

Solve : Setting up Server 2003 as a Web Server on a home network.?

    Answer»

I want to Install Server 2003 and set up a web server on my home compuer.
My home network consist of 3 computers, I have cable service, I use a router to connect all of them.
Then I need to figure out how to set up dyndns so that it will stay connected.

I have a domain registered that i can put on it, and will need help with setting up dns.

I am in no hurry and will be willing to take all the time that is required to do this. I need some serious hand holding to GET there.

Is there such a person out there. I can call you on the phone to make things easier if need be.

Thanks in advance.First, you'll need to install IIS or Apache on your server. Either one will work well for most applications. IIS comes with Windows, and Apache can be downloaded alone from www.apache.org or in a pre-configured package from www.apachefriends.org.
After getting the web server working, you'll need to configure your router to forward web traffic to your web server.
After that, set up your domain name to point to the static ip address assigned to your router.Hi,

First of all thanks for the REPLY.

I think I forwarned you that I would need a lot of hand holding with this … LOL

I installed the standard version of Server 2003 on a spare computer. Everything went smoothly.

It then displayed the Manage your server window. From there I clicked on the Application Server Link and installed the Internet Information Server. I then clicked on the DNS Server Link and installed DNS. At least I think I have them installed.

Now, you say once I get the Web Server working. How can I tell if it is working?

I think I can handle the Router part but first I need to know if the web server is working, I guess.

After I figure out how to tell if the Web Server is working and I get the router configured we can work on the domain name. LOL
open Internet Explorer with another computer on the same network and type in the IP address of the server. If a web page opens, it's working. If you don't have another computer on the network, type "localhost" in the web browser on the server.
You shouldn't need the DNS server installed to serve web pages. You only need it if you're setting up an internal network and planning on using DNS in the network.Hi,

    Ok … I uninstalled DNS …

I think I have IIS working.

When I enter localhost on the server it brings up the default web site.

When I enter the Ip address of the web server from another system it also brings up the default web site.

Now in the Router I have set persistent port forwarding to the servers ip address.

Now what do I need to do ?
Find out what your static IP is from your ISP and try accessing it from a computer on the internet. Or tell me what your IP is and I can try it for you. You should be able to find your internet IP address by looking in your router for the IP address connected to the internet.

When all that is figured out, open the IIS manager and have a look around. It's pretty simple to figure out and you shouldn't have to much difficulty with it. Basically, you put all your html files in the "Default Web Site" directory and it will be available to the internet.OK …

    Now the fun starts.

I copied all the files for the web site into the Default Web Site Folder.

I can access it locally by going to the IP Address of the server, and the Index.html file displays.

I can still get to it from the server by typing localhost in.

I need to mention that this domain name shuckems.com is hosted somewhere else on the internet. I have it hosted at godaddy and it is up and working there also.

I found the IP Address of the router and tried to access it locally with that IP Address and it couldn’t find it. I then had a neighbor try it and he got (Failure to connect to the server).

I then went back to the router to see if it could be something there. Here is what it says there.

I selected Persistent port forwarding and enabled TCP inbound and outbound on port 80. There is also a selection there for private ports and I selected port 80 for that also.
Looks like this one has run it's course. Thanks for information.
    Hi,
did you manage to get your webserver working?
Im trying to do the same thing, I can access it from internal computers by typing the servers IP address in but cant access it by typing my external IP address in, also VirginMedia (my ISP) wont give me a static IP, would I be able to make it working using my dyndns ACCOUNT?

    Thanks
    steHi Stemorley,

No I didn't get it to working properly. I could connect internaly also but not externaly.

If you want to work together email me at [emailprotected] and maybe we can come up with something.

ShadowSorry I didn't reply back to your post. I remember looking at it and I thought I typed something out. Maybe I just didn't hit the Post button.
Can you access the web server from a computer on the same network? Find out what the ip address is on the server (something like 192.168.0.1) and enter that number into the browser of a neighboring computer.Hi Michae,

I am not ignoring you here, I am just trying to think this through.
When I didn't get a reply for a long time I figured that I had hit a dead end again.
I wound up formating the server and puting something else on it.

My plan was to set up a web server at home that would be accessable to the world and be able to put a few web sites on it. I know that there are several steps to go through and I don't want to start it all again unless I can be reasonably sure that we can get all the steps installed and be able to put a couple of web sites on it.

I am reasonably sure that you guys can get the job done and I am in no hurry. I know that if there is something that you are unsure of you will know the right people to TALK to and get it done.

Let me know what you think and if you are game I can reinstall the server software again.

    Thanks in advance

Solve : How to run login script?

    Answer»

My company is in the process of switching from one Active Directory server to another (both running Win2003 Server STANDARD). I have moved the FMSO roles, DNS and WINS. Everthing seems to be working fine. However I am having trouble moving the login scripts to the new server. The login script is being called from Active Direcory under each USER's profile tab - Login script field. I don't know if it is relevent or not but but when I run DCPROMO on the old server to remove AD I get a warning saying it can not contact any other domain severs.

I have searched online and per the advice of multiple POSTS I have placed a test script on the new server at the following locations.

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSVOL\sysvol\inwood.local\scripts
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSVOL\domain\scripts
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSVOL\domain\scripts\inwood.local\scripts

The old server's scripts are still running without an issue. They are located at the following locations.

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSVOL\domain\scripts
C:\WINDOWS\SYSVOL\sysvol\inwood.local\scriptsHave you moved your machines to the new domain? Are you running DHCP? Or static IPs? Does the machine have the new DNS server listed when you run ipconfig /all from a command line?

    Thanks for the reply.

I found that I had many issues with the config. Eventually I had an outside firm help me set it up.

I am the administrator and I'm using the administrator account, but still i can not fix this issue.
I tried to find a solution in the dell site but i did not had a success.

Also what version of Windows is this, and when did the problem start?I'm using windows XP SP2, Task manager is inactive (highlighted in gray), you can activate it with an registry KEY, but I don't have access to that because it tells me that this operation is disabled by administrator (even if I'm using an administrator account on it).

Solve : Windows SBS 2003 Problems?

    Answer»

Okay, so here's the thing. Recently, I installed Windows SBS 2003 on one of our company computers just sitting around. Took me a bit to get it working as it has SATA drives and not IDE. Anyway, it is also the DC and is hosting our internal company website with IIS6 that Microsoft so graciously provides for you with SBS. Before anyone comments on the setup it is our only computer to use for this, plus it's just a test server.

My problem is the company website. I spent DAYS trying to get it to work on the clients. Finally did after pointing the clients toward the server IP under DNS manually. I also installed a CA on the server and dished out some certificates to the clients. Don't know if that helped too, but I did it anyway. The real problem is that occasionally the website will stop functioning and I can't access it from the server, which in TURN means I can't access it from the clients either. Our domain is our_company.local. My question is why does it do this? I have also tried setting a LOOPBACK on our Sonicwall to see if that would help and it makes no difference. It is just frustrating trying to use a website that WORKS when it wants to. Just let me know if anymore info is needed. Any ideas would be welcomed. Thanks.I would add the web site in your DNS server...

Sounds like your clients are getting lost when they look for the site. A DNS entry would resolve the name and give them a IP for the site.

What ended up working was I added a host header under the IIS settings then another CNAME under DNS. I can now access the website from all clients. Why the default name has problems connecting I don't know and I don't care. This works so I am happy.Good! Glad things worked out for you.

    And welcome to the site!

    Solve : Windows server 2008 won't install?

    Answer»

I have an HP Proliant ML350 G5 server that I am trying to load Windows server 2008 32 bit standard edition on via Smart Start. I downloaded the install FILE from Microsoft's Volume licensing site. It tries to install, but after about half way, I get an error message that says: The installation was canceled...Windows could not apply unattend settings during pass (null). once I close the error message out, I get a commant prompt. The last command executed by the install is hpssbem.exe. I close out the command prompt and it reboots.
When it comes back up, I get a "DOS" window with the title of Windows Boot Manager. the window says:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
    1. insert your windows installation disk and restart your computer.
    2. CHOOSE your language settings, and then click "Next".
    3. Click "Repair yor computer."

If you do not have this disk, contact your system administrator or computer MANUFACTURER for assistance.

    File: \Boot\BCD

    Status: 0x000000f

Info: An error occured while attempting to read the boot configuration data.

Thank you for any help on this issue.Could be a bad download. Try downloading the dvd again.
you might also want to try installing without smartstart, if possible. I've never used smartstart before, so I can't help any with that. Not even sure what it does. The boot manager is due to the failed install.

What are your servers specs?I have the same issue -
I have an HP ProLiant ML350 Gneration 5 Server with Xeon Quad core, 5GB RAM, 5x 72GB Harddrives (Drives 0,1 as Raid 0+1 / Drives 2,3 as 0+1 and Drive 4 as spare for 2,3)
I have Windows Server 2008 SP2 Standard 32BitI just downloaded the latest SmartStart Version 8.30 from the HP Website, made a Bootable Disk from the ISO File -
Smart Smart does not allow to choose International English - just US, German etc.

But it finally copied the Installation Files over and then when it booted up again,
it started to expand Files, rather than BREAKING up with the Error Message - so I am looking forward to get this Install going now.

5 min later all files are copied and it finishing the Installation now - I am happy!

Hope this message helps everyone else too!

Solve : IP Address help for configuration of windows server 2003?

    Answer»
Hello, guys how are you doing? i don't have more experience for the CONFIGURATION of a windows server 2003 specially with IP Address but i know a little about IP Address classes, before i ASK a question let me give you my idea in detail
i am working in small office and we have 10 computers connected to server 2003 and the server IP = 192.168.0.1 which is class "C" and the subnet = 255.255.255.0 and there is no get way, the DNS = 192.168.0.1. right now, what i understand from this is the IP Address and the DNS server are the same, by LOOKING this configuration i thought that the IP Address and the DNS of the server are always the same. suddenly, i go to another office to meet my friend when i see their configuration of the server it is different just like that serverIP= 192.168.1.100, SUBNET = 255.255.255.0, and G.W = 192.168.1.1, and the DNS SERVER = 192.168.1.45, now my question is,
    1. what is the difference between this two SERVERS, the 1st server the IP and the DNS are the same, while the 2nd server it's IP and DNS are different?
    2. if it is possible according my configuration, suppose i have a gate way = 192.168.0.1 so, can i CONFIGURE like this? serverIP= 192.168.0.2, subnet the same, G.W = 192.168.0.1 and DNS = 192.168.0.2 is this possible?

please guys help me i am so confused about this IP Address?

    thank you very much :-

1.) On your setup the DNS server resides on the same machine as your Windows Server 2003. I'm guessing Server 2003 is setup to handle DNS requests. On the other setup the DNS server is on its own machine, separate from the gateway and server. There is really no right way of doing this, it all depends on what fits your network infrastructure.

2.) Yes. That shouldn't be problem.
thank you very muchOn your 2nd server it means you have another machine setup as your DNS that is why they have different DNS server unlike your setup that you're dns is same as your server. For me if your Server is also your Domain server its good to have one of your dns server to the domain server for easy validation.

for your question, that is perfectly OK.

    good luck

    ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest

The first command enables network access for Guest, the two subsequent ones change two different policies to allow network access for Guest.

    WHAT? yeah it worked
i dont have that pro now

    Solve : windows 2003-system space?

    Answer»

when i installed Windows 2003 i noticed that it only left 20gigs for the system files. how do i increase that without reformatting the machine or messing it up. it has 2 terabytes in the machine. i am a newbie at this server thing but so far it is running great.

    can someone lelp

    Thanks

WobblesI usually use Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery to redo partitions. I'll make an image of the system and then restore it to the same drive, modifying the partition size. This method makes the most sense to me, because you want to have a backup of your system before PLAYING with partition tables anyways.
You can also use something like Partition Magic to resize partitions.
Personally, I don't make my system partition for server 2003 any bigger than 20-30 gb. server 03 doesn't need that much and I usually tell all of my server programs to store data on a separate partition. That way if the system has problems and needs to be restored, the data for the programs isn't touched.
My recommendation is to keep the system partition the same size and use the rest of the space for data on a separate partition.thanks for RESPONDING to me, but when i am tapping into the server from a remote location i cant get my programs as it says does not have enough space. and when i checked it LAST night it only had 466mb left.. i dont know what happened?? i Figure i would give the system 50gigs. i can always add another hard drive for more space.. as far as i know i only have system files and drivers. all my programs are on other drives. like i said i am new to this.. so do i have to back up everything before i mess with this.. its running nicely i realy dont want to mess with it. and when i was loading win03 i dont REMEMBER it asking me what size partition i wanted. normaly i dont partition drives i leave them WHOLE. thanks for your help!!

...then again, that might actually be the PLUS program...Correct.
That is the difference between yours and the Pro version...I appreciate it.

    Solve : Overide user password?

    Answer»

In between programmers on the software right now and the updates are information based. I dont know wht the original programmer never just created a SQL table for it. The REST of the program is. Ok, well I appreciate you taking some time out to reply. Thanks!just looked over this again, can't say I know of a solution, especially if you need access to their profiles to make the changes... you could, theoretically maybe make two users and then edit one of the profiles SETTINGS so that it points to the same folders, REGISTRY, etc by creating hard-links to the other users folders/registry hive files... but it seems a bit dangerous (DELETING the one account deletes the files from the other, too) and might cause other issues as well.Chris, do you know where the updates apply? Is it in the registry?

Why not use the netlogon scripts to run the updates as the users log on, and flash up a message to let them know what's GOING on?I have tried that, but sometimes the updates just need to be watched over in case of failure. I do this for other upgrades. I am just gonna keep up with I have been doing until I get new programmer here to fix where the item is upgraded. THe items needing upgraded is data information that has been hard coded into the software, it really just needs pointed to a SQL database. I created me a new test enviroment yesterday and am going to attempt the programming myself, I hate programming things, but I believe this is the best solutions now.If you need to "watch" installs in an automated fashion, you could do worse than learn AutoIt, which is a small step removed from full-blown programming: http://www.autoitscript.com/

Solve : Does Active Directory Restored in ntds.dit file Only??

    Answer»

Hi, guys how are you doing? please i need your help with the following questions about AD restored files.

In my company the server that we have is "HP Proliant DL380" which is DHCP and it has two primary partition Drive ' C' capacity= 39.0GB, free space = 18.6GB. Drive 'D' capacity = 164GB, free space = 155GB. this partition was done by some one before i goined to the company. but if i were, at least i would chose drive 'D'. Right now what i am trying to say is, in this server we have SQL server 2005 is installed and applications such as VB6 windows APPLICATION, .NET windows application and Web Application are Running. ( softwares, for reception, Accounting, HR, cashier, Medical Record, department, SMS.....) and also Norton antivirus-Corparate edition. take a look for the following Active Directory is restored in C:\windows:\NTDS

    1. ed0000D.log = 10,240kb
    2. edb.chk = 8kb
    3. edb.log = 10,240kb
    4 edbtemp.log = 2,048kb
    5. ntds.dit = 12,304kb
    6. res1.log = 10,240kb
    7. res2.log = 10,240kb
    8. temp.edb = 2,064kb

    I have the following questions

    1. Does AD restored in ntds.dit file only? What about the other files in there? What is the most important AD file need to take care?
    2. What capacity do I need for AD restored files?
    3. What should I do after the Drive "C" is full? Is it possible to transfer AD file in to Drive "D"? but in drive "D" also there are shared Applications and some files.

Please guys help me i have only 18GB LEFT in Drive "C"

    Thank you guys
You could start by zeroing the log files...Since they're two different partitions, rather than two physical drives, you could use EASEUS to resize the partitions...of course it would have to be done after business hours...

I wouldn't mess AROUND with changing Active Directory locations. You'll have a HUGE mess on your hands if things go wrong. Hello, guys how are you doing?

Rob Pomery says " You could start by zeroing the log files..." first of all i have no experience i mean i don't understand what youi are saying? could you please explain and how to do it?

Killerb255 says " Since they're two different partitions, rather than two physical drives, you could use EASEUS to resize the partitions...of course it would have to be done after business hours... "
i have already downloded the software partition and tried in my standalone PC, i think it is fine. but before i jump to the server; i have questions about the Primary and logical Disks
    1. as i said i was tried in my machine and selected one primary HHD which is 76gb and resized to 35gb buring this process, i found only two options i.e the primary and logical partition. So, i selected the Logical. is it correct? could you please expalin that indetail? how to do it?
    2. after this partition, when my HDD "c" is full then do you think it will redirect to this Logical Drive automatically? or i have still another process to do it?

THANKS guys and God bless you
What Rob meant by zeroing the log files is to clear them out. Start -> Programs -> Administrative Tools -> EVENT Viewer. Right-click on Application, left-click "Clear log files," when asked to save them, say Yes and save them somewhere, repeat for the Security and the System log files.

As for partitions, there are two kinds: a Primary Partition and an Extended Partition.

An extended partition can have 1-4 Logical Drives. In a nutshell, think of a "Logical Drive" as a partition-within-a-partition. Only Extended Partitions can have Logical Drives. Primary Partitions can't.

If your C partition gets full, the excess does NOT "spill" over to another partition. You'll have to resize the C partition then.

I'm 100% sure the C partition is the Primary Partition and the D partition is the Logical Drive in the Extended Partition. Why am I 100% sure? You can't boot Windows from an Extended Partition/Logical Drive.

Some other things you need to consider:

    1) Are we dealing with a single drive or a RAID array?
    2) Are we dealing with Basic Disks or Dynamic Disks? (right-click My Computer -> Manage -> Disk Management -> right next to each drive letter it'll say either "Basic" or "Dynamic") Oh! i am so sorry, this is always what i am doing? i thought it was different and was just thinking about ntds files only. what i am doing is, every three days by accessing the event viewer and then i make clear(clean) an application files. but i don't save them. why i should save them? is there any problem with that?

2nd thing, when i see the disk management says these two partitions drives are " Basic"

thanksQuote from: yonee on July 12, 2009, 11:15:26 AM

Oh! i am so sorry, this is always what i am doing? i thought it was different and was just thinking about ntds files only.

    Huh?? You lost me there.

The reason for clearing log files in the first place is to free up disk space. Your concern was the disk space on C, and clearing out your log files is one way to address this somewhat.

Yes and no. It depends on if something were to go wrong with the server, and you need to look back at those old event logs to find out what it was...

    Quote
2nd thing, when i see the disk management says these two partitions drives are " Basic"

Good. Dynamic Disks are a pain for partitioning software to deal with.

You still didn't answer whether this server has only one drive or a RAID array. A single drive is not a good idea because if that drive dies and the last backup is not current, then you'll have MUCH bigger problems than just the amount of space the C partition has...

A RAID array can be set up in one of several ways, but I'll list three of the most common:

RAID0: Disk Striping. Two or more drives are involved. The data is written across all the drives evenly. However, if one drive dies, all the data is lost! NOT a good idea to use on a server without something else constantly backing up the array's data!

RAID1: Disk Mirroring. Two or more drives are involved. Each drive is an exact copy of the other. If one drive dies, the other drive still has a copy of all the data. Replace the dead drive with a new one and the new drive will be a copy as well.

RAID5: Disk Striping with Parity. Three or more drives are involved. The data is written across all the drives evenly, and contains information which can be used to rebuild if one drive were to go bad. Again, replacing the dead drive with new one will cause the information to be striped across it as well. However, more than one dead drive at the same time will probably ruin your day, as that means everything's most likely gone...

Of course there are nested RAID scenarios like RAID 10, RAID15, or RAID51, but from what you're telling us, I don't think your server has that many hard drives to support a nested RAID array.
Hi, guys how are you doing?

i have tried what you saying but it doesn't support nested RAID array.

thank you guysQuote from: yonee on July 11, 2009, 11:57:39 AM

the size of the ad restored files are too small to worry about and would be pointless to move.
Why are you worried about only having 18gb of free space on your C drive? How quickly is it filling up? Where is your SQL server saving its data (C or D drive)? Where do you store your web apps?

Solve : Didn't see a forum for Windows 2000 server family os?

    Answer»

    Hi,

Brand new to the site...I lost my Windows 2000 server family disc.

I have a boot error and I know that it is not my hard drive because I HOOKED it up to my other computer as a slave and it works fine.

So is there anywhere on the net that I can download it and burn it to disk so I can fix it.

Some one told me technet but I can't seem to find it there. Actually now I see that Technet has it but I don't want to pay $350 to join the site. I ALREADY have it and have my key. So it isnt a licsensing need it is just the install so I can fix my boot error without a re-install. I'm glad to hear that you found a solution, let us know how it works for you.Actually I havent found it yet. Just wondering where I can download it so I can fix the issue without paying.

I mean $350 is more then the OS costs new. With a new key.

Which like I said I have my Key just misplaced the disc. I am sure I have it somewhere but we just moved and it's probably in one of the hundred boxes in my garage.

I might have to just tear though all those boxes unless one of you guys knows where I can download it. You can't download 2000 for free.Try booting from live Linux CD and using the repair tools? I've had some success with GParted - once the partitions are recognised, you can right-click on the partition and attempt a repair. (It may be that there is "damage" in the boot AREA.)

What is the boot error, by the way?CHECK out some of the computer repair shops in your area. See if they have a windows 2000 server cd that has the same part number as what is on your sticker.
Example: The CD will have something like "Part No. X05-07185" and the sticker will have "X05-54512" if both the cd and sticker have X05, or X11, or whatever, you should be able to reinstall with that cd.
But if you're just WANTING to repair, and not reinstall, then any cd should work.

    Solve : dos shutdown command?

    Answer»

I am trying to shutdown 157 windows XP WORKSTATIONS using the following bat FILE.
"shutdown -r -f -c " Automatic system restart has been called for by the system administrator. Shutdown will BEGIN in 30 seconds".

Can I use wildcards and the -m \\abc** for system names.

Example "abc**" for system named abc01, abc02 ect.
I only want to shut down and restart certian pc's in the domain.

The domain server is running Server 2003.

ThanksYou can't use wildcards for the shutdown command, but you could probably do something like this in a batch file:

    Code: [Select]@echo off
    for /f "tokens=*" %%a in ('net view ^| findstr /i /b "\\\\abc"') do (
    echo Rebooting %%a
shutdown.exe -r -f -m "%%a" -c " Automatic system restart has been called for by the system administrator. Shutdown will begin in 30 seconds"
    )
As with all batch scripts, this should be tested in a controlled environment before run on a live network.
