Solve : dual os install? |
Answer» I want to install a new 200GB primary with C,D,E,F,G partitions. The secondary HD will have J,K,L,M partitions. I want to install a new 200GB primary with C,D,E,F,G partitions. The secondary HD will have J,K,L,M partitions. Hello Kapil, You don't mention the size of the second hard drive. Fdisk usually only allows for four partitions including the primary on each physical drive. If you really want more I would USE BootIT NG as a Boot Manager. If you set up the two drives together then C: will be a primary and all other drives following will be Logical drives in the Extended DOS partition. This is the only way to keep the drive letters in alphabetical sequence. I have XP in a dual boot arangement, as you can see, with one OS installed on Primary C: and the second OS installed on a logical drive. I would say that it doesn't matter which logical drive you install the second copy to. When you boot you should see the choice of two operating systems. Mine are obviously English or FRENCH your may show as Windows 2000 and Windows 2000 (1) I really don't know. I have just tried out Windows Server 2003 by installing it to a folder on drive F: with no change in drive letter, so if you do get a change in drive letter try installing to a 2000 Folder, on what you have now planned to be drive J: If you need drive imaging programs TeraByte Unlimited have Image for Windows and Image for DOS, as well as BootIT NG which comes together with a Partition Resizer, and the price is very reasonable for what I consider to be four excellent programs which have never let me down to date. |

Solve : Web Server Setup? |
Answer» I have Web Server 2008 setup, on a unit that we want too host a small site featuring the business that I work for. I tried too FIND tutorials on it about setting it up but, no real luck. I know that we have port the Server. I was told that IIS needed updated from 6 too a newer version but, I don't know how. I also, have test files too check once we have it running. We want it too be external. The site it's self isn't a top priority without the host too run it.Is there a reason why your not just going with a web host vs hosting your own? Is there a reason why your not just going with a web host vs hosting your own? I was also, going too put a firewall in place for things like that if it should happenFirewall may block all but some ports, BUT the ports open for the functionality of the server to host webpages on the web are an unlocked door for a hacker if your system is not hardened. Hardened as in patched and configured properly. Additionally depending on what your using for a website you can have even more troubles with injection attacks and more. Everyone has to learn sometime I guess. If you continue to move forward with your own vs paying for another, best of luck. I would have someone who is a specialist look over your server before you expose it to the web or work with you to build it up as secure as possible. Additionally for private web server hosting I feel the best ones are running with Linux OS way more secure! Years ago I use to host my own webserver with Apache running Linux Fedora Core 5 on a Celeron 500Mhz with 256MB RAM. It was secure and worked fine. I did it mainly because it was cool and it was mine. But I also was attending a college course at the time in Linux and so the professor pointed me to building it up secure. I later shut it down because it was cheaper to pay for a web host than it was electric bill for system to be running 24/7. I decommissioned the web server and then turned it into a honeypot for a while baiting hackers to learn their methods of attack and tools that they would plant etc. After it was hit by a hacker I'd Ghost image restore back to it fresh wide open for the next hacker with prior hackers work wiped clean.bob1286, you say you are a beginner. Do you have any experience with hosted web site? Here is what I have learned. A.)The host site is one 24 hues a day and they pay for bandwidth and they have a high speed interface to the network. I can not afford a 24 hours high speed thing. So I let them do it for a fraction of the cost. B.) I backup my intellectual property, my stuff, onto my local computer from time to time. If my site GOES down, I can reconstruct it in a few hours. Of course, the holst also has a backup system. C.) My domain registration is not with my web host. So if my host gets into a fight with me, I just tell the registrar to change the timeservers. Then when it is ready, I upload my stuff to a new web site space. That way they can not steal my domain names. (Which happened once.) D.)What I pay per month for web space is less than what I would pay for the electricity I would have to pay for having a commercial grade server in my home. So there you have four reasons not to run a full web server from your home. |

Solve : Version checking within administrative batch file? |
Answer» I have a need to update a main batch (.cmd) file, sub-scripts, and folders when out of date. The batch is part of an internal process that collects information off of Windows 2003, 2008 & 2012. We are using batch and a little VBS because it works on all servers that we have on our environment. We cannot install anything or utilize any tools that modify the registry. As this task was limited to windows 2003 and a few 2008 servers, an extensive process was not needed. Our success has initiated the task of doing the same on all of our servers world wide. These servers do not have access to anything outside of the coperate Intranet without considerable red tape. I realize there are many apps out there that can do this specific thing but I have been told that I will not get authorization to install any of these. Your situation is slightly odd. You dont seem to be the administrator of these systems with your hands tied from all that you cant do. There must be someone else in charge with these privileges and your trying to work around them by USE of a script. Have you gotten proper approval to create run a custom script if they have all this red tape? Running this on systems world wide, and your hands tied as they are that you cant do this and cant do that, is just fishy. Quote I have run out of time and I have waited too long to reach out for help. Soooo ... please help. Who did you run out of time to reach out for help with? The apps out there that can do this specific task are your best solution. This solution for a scripted work around would need privileges that you dont seem to be granted within the business. Have you TALKED to your boss about this situation?Judging by the nebulous query and the fact it's a workplace situation i'm not quite sure we should advise any further... You need to talk to who's in charge...have him re-define your tasks and responsibilities and we'll be glad to assist at that point. |

Solve : Services.msc not Responding? |
Answer» HELLO Everyone Hope everyone is doing well. I have an issue with the services.msc not responding as soon as it opens, now I cannot manage any services. It does not give any error messages either. The machine is running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard. I have CHECKED for viruses, came out clean on both scans. I have run regsvr32.exe jscript.dll as well as regsvr32.exe vbscript.dll, but nothing seems to be working. While searching for a possible fix I found that the Help and Support option does the same thing. Im starting to think that it could be caused by a Windows update, but I am not sure when the problem started or which update could be the problem. Any advise\ ideas are more than welcome.... Im getting desperate. Thanks to all 1) Does the same thing happen if you access via ADMINISTRATIVE Tools? 2) Does the same thing happen in safe mode?ALLAN is on to SOMETHING....rite clik Command in the Start menu and select Run as Admin...then type in services.msc and hit Enter. Thanks for the replies! Running it from admin tools or any other way gives the same results. I have not yet tried from Safe Mode as I have not been allowed much downtime. I will give it a try tonight and revert back. Thanks again! |

Solve : Server 2008, Restrict User's from Drives? |
Answer» I know that when you share drives on a network that you can set it spefic to everyone on certain USERS but, how do I set it to certain users that have like active directory on the server. Is it the same as a regular share? Some say, myself included, saring a drive is not a good IDEA. Instead prepare a drive or partition to have just one directory and share taht directory. Yes, that is not a requjirement, just a way to keep on's sanity. That allows lfor yhou to creat another directoru in the future with differnet restrictions. Re: Server 2008, Restrict User's from Drives Which users? How many? Where are they? If you mean users on the machine itself: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/816302 HOW TO: Manage GROUPS in Windows Server 2003 Quote Groups are Active Directory or local computer objects that can contain users, contacts, computers, and other groups. You can use groups to do the following:Is that it? Could you explain clearer who you want to share it with, anyone that has an AD account on the server? If so, there should be a group for something like "Domain Users" - This is all users in active directory. The only thing is that I don't have the clients joined to the domain, cause, of networking hardware changes and they all have there own local which, when they go to see the drives on the server, I don't want them to have access PROVIDED that it's not the right user. I did MAKE separate groups and assigned it to the shares but, I think that I may of overlooked something.Another waste of our time. Closed |

Solve : How do I revert to a previously saved version of a Word document?? |

Answer» I had two versions of a document saved on my computer; one on the desktop, one in a file folder in My Documents. I thought I was working with the document in the file folder in My Documents (we'll call it the "My Doc" file), but I was ACTUALLY working with the desktop file (Desktop). I WANTED to update and save My Doc while keeping the other version (Desktop) as it originally was before the update (making a sort of archive of progress with the document). But, INSTEAD of doing that, I got confused and saved Desktop as the changed, new version, and then, in a effort to make sure I was SAVING the right document, did a Save As and saved (and replaced) the My Doc file. Each file system has a maximum number of clusters it can support. Selecting 512 bytes would limit you to relatively small disk "volumes" since the supported volume size is "max_nbr_clusters times cluster_size". Solve : ms-dos copy command? |
Answer» Hello All, I am a newbie and I have some strange errors. One of my end users are using the dos copy command on a windows 2000 server copying to a windows 2003 server. When he copies a text file from one server to the other, some of the data is being corrupted. It normally is just 1 0r 2 characters that change. This text file is then encrypted to one of our clients but they've been complaining that we are sending them bad data. This process is normally automated and runs by itself. We may run this process 50 times and get 5 or 6 bad copies. Have anyone ever heard of anything like this, we called MS and they did not really have any answers. If the file has a "." it will be changed to a "/" or vise versa. I am at my wits in because we can not find the source of the problem. Everyone thinks its the copy command, we even substituted to the move command and it ran fine for 2 weeks and now we just found out that we have SENT them another bad file. We are grasping at straws here. If anyone has a different SOLUTION or heard of this before please let me know. Additionally I would like to run the copy command without xp_cmdshell (creating a job /batch file and schedule it using Windows task scheduler) The command shell acts as the interpreter for batch files. Windows will open a command shell whenever a batch file is run, the scheduler and the run box are not exceptions. You can however bypass the command shell by using any of the windows script languages (vbscript, jscript, rexx, python and many more) The is a vbscript solution: Code: [Select]Const FOF_CREATEPROGRESSDLG = &H0& strTargetFolder = "D:\Scripts" Set objShell = CreateObject("Shell.Application") Set objFolder = objShell.NameSpace(strTargetFolder) objFolder.CopyHere "C:\Scripts\*.*", FOF_CREATEPROGRESSDLG In this example, d:\scripts is the target folder and c:\scripts is the source folder. Save the script with a vbs extension and run from the command prompt as cscript scriptname.vbs PS. The progress bar is built into the CopyHere method. Note: script uses mapped drives but should work with UNC tagging also |

Solve : Intermittent slowness with Web App running on local server? |
Answer» Small business, using a web app on local server. (SBS 2003 with all patches, etc) The server was setup by the web app company. The server is a domain controller. All PCs are on the domain, using domain logons. We have problems where there is very slow response from the APPLICATION...sometimes. This happens all the TIME from one particular XP client and also working directly from the server, but maybe to a lesser degree. Typing in boxes in the forms were sometimes excruciatingly slow. As you type, the text doesn't show up right away, but seems to stay in a buffer and then shows up seconds later. Also, pressing buttons doesn't always have an immediate effect - sometimes you wait seconds before the effect of the button press happens. |

Solve : Windows Server 2003 + IBM Server? |
Answer» Hi there, I have an issue with my IBM Server (System x3400). For some reason, it turns on the sleep mode, and I don't know how to restablish it to normal mode, because the power switch buttom LOOKS LIKE doesn't work in this mode. I'd tried to move with the keyboard and double click with the mouse and nothing. The only way to turn on again is using a several solution: "Disconnecting the power AC supply cable" and CONNECTING again before 20 seconds. This is the only way that it works, but no other. |
