Solve : Windows Server question...?

I'm planning to study Windows Server 2003 on my virtual machine. My question is, Is Windows Server 2003 SP1 obsolete? can it still be used in companies?

It is used in a lot of companies, but as previously pointed out, is obsolete. Most companies that have Server 2003 are counting down the DAYS to get to Server 2008/R2, and with Server 2012 right around the CORNER, I wouldn't RECOMMEND wasting time on Server 2003.

Solve : Export NTFS Permissions of shared folder?

Answer»

Hi,

We have the a file servers.. granted some permissions on each server. Employee in our org can ACCESS the files from network share. I want the report like , who are all the has permissions to Iterator/List the folder contents remotely. (List the SIDS with permissions that accessible by remotely)

I searched.. some one give the NTFS permissions alone.. or some one give share permissions alone. But I want consolidated the permissions report. Like

user1 --- \\file-server\folder1 -- Read -- Allow
user1 -- \\filser-server\folder2 --Fullcontrol - Allow
user1 -- \\fileserver\folder3 -- Write -- Deny

I know the point, when ACCESSING the network folder, the permissions are effect in the following order..
Consolidated the Share permissions
Consolidated the NTFS Permissions
Most restrictive permissions from above two.
Please help...

It appears that this tool may only do NTFS perms, but is WORK CHECKING out (and free): http://www.solarwinds.com/products/freetools/permissions_analyzer_for_active_directory/

Otherwise, only way I can think of is doing each separate, as described here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverfiles/thread/dd621e53-b5f1-4f59-9753-f3d482dbce04/

Solve : Windows Remote 2008 Server?

Answer»

Im useing an Admin Account to login to. I havent had this issue in a while an seemed like was the path that was pointing to it which, I had checked an is looking at the Server. I put in the a shined password an cant login an tried even changeing it to a new one only to have it still not login me in. Server 2008 - Windows XP SP 3 Remote DesktopDoes it come up with invalid password or any other error message?

And guessing Caps Lock or Num Lock is not issue when typing password? Its a combination of a number an one upper case letter an small letters. I can connect too it but, it wont take the password that I know it isThat's not what David asked...
Please read the question and supply the answer...I just wanted to note that but, no I DONT have that stuff on. Just comes up that its not the right passwordIf Num Lock is not on you wont get numbers from keypad ... if you are using keypad... If you have a key pad and want to use the numbers function it has to be Num Lock ENABLED.

One other thing to CHECK is that the Caps lock is not enabled on the computer by which you are connecting to via RDP. MENTIONING this only because a long time ago with a SOFTWARE called PC Anywhere I dealt with an issue where Caps lock was enabled on the server, so when I was authenticating to the server, as crazy as it may sound I had to have my Caps Lock key ON on my laptop to inverse the Caps lock function on the Server for lower case input. RDP and PC Anywhere are like Apples to Oranges, but its worth a try if enabling Num Lock doesn't help you.

Solve : Want to be able to have workgroups access the internet when server is off?

Answer»

I have a server running windows 2000. We have 10 computers connected to the domain. We used to use the server to share files and hold some BACKUP files. We do not need to be connected anymore. Basically, I want to do away with the Dinosaur aged server and just have each computer run independently, PERHAPS share a few folders. I have done some tests with unplugging the servers internet connection to see how the computers would react. Everything works the way I want it to (able to share folders) but the work computers lose internet. How do I set up the computers so they can interdependently access the internet without going through the server? We have a ROUTER switch. Thank you in advance!

JohnFirst, are your computers connected to the server as a domain?
Also, what version of Operating System are they all using?

If so, then each has to be unjoined from the domain and pick up their IP via DHCP from the router.

The best way is to make sure that all are on the same workgroup. Set them all to something like home or office instead
of workgroup.

Then each has to have share setup for a directory and then permissions to access have to be given.

If your router is giving out IP's via dhcp and the gateway is setup properly then each should be able to access the internet
without any problem.

RichThanks Rich. Yes, we are connected via a domain. We are all on XP Professional but the server is 2000. If I unjoin the domain will my computer automatically pick up the IP via DHCP from the router when I join a workgroup, or is this something you have to manually POINT your computer to? Also, is there a way to unjoin a domain and keep all of the settings (outlook, programs, logon info, documents, ect) the same? Thank you very much for the help.

John, if the existing router set up to issue IP's then unjoining from the domain will work. BUT if your server is running DHCP and DNS, then your going to have serious problems.
If your domain is running Exchange, then your outlook will not work.
Additionally, I would be leary of unjoining from the domain as your documents will not be AVAILABLE to you as a non-domain user.

are you the administrator for the windows 2000 domain?

Rich Rich- Although not too experienced I am the administrator. Is it easy enough for me to sit at the server and find out whether we are running DHCP and DNS? I am worried that our server is soooo old that it is not going to make it very much longer. I am concerned I will show up to work one day and it will have crashed overnight. Like I mentioned in previous posts, we do not need the server any longer. I just want to set up some simple sharing via a workgroup. Any suggestions moving forward? Would I have any options if the server crashed? Thank you for all the help!

Solve : changing the welcome screen text across computers on the domain?

Answer»

Our school is running Server 2003, all of the classroom computers and laptops log into it. The previous teacher changed the welcome text to say, "...If you have any problems please contact Mr. Schroeder." Well he has left and I contacted him to find out how he changed it. He can not remember. I checked Google and was able to find how to change the text on a COMPUTER, but when I changed it on the server it did not carry over to the client computer. I rebooted both the server and the client I was testing.

Is there some other registry setting so that the welcome screen text is changed across all CURRENT and future computers that log into the server? I went to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Policies\System and changed the legalnoticetext. It was changed on the server, and manually on a WORKSTATION, but did not change when I rebooted a different machine.

What did I miss?

ThanksThat method will work fine for any individual computer, but to make it a network-wide change you should deploy it via a Group Policy setting or startup SCRIPT. I didn't see that in a quick look through the group policy reference, but it might be in there. Alternatively, a startup script to add the registry ENTRY should work okay.

Solve : Windows server 2003 drivers?

Answer»

I have a hp dx 2300 and put windows server 2003 r2 standard 32bit.
hp doesn't list any windows server divers for the ethernet controller but are there xp ones compatible with it?All you can do is TRY them...they'll either work or not.I had that same computer running with the integrated Broadcom NIC and Server 2003, also ran into same problem with finding drivers. Chipset in mine was Broadcom, had to OPEN case and look at the NIC chip to get details and research, and the Server 2003 Legacy Driver worked:

http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/netxtreme_desktop.php?legacy=1Mine has an Intel N10 ICH 7 Family LAN Controller
which I can't seem to find any server drivers forLink below is closest match I can find for Server 2003 and your Intel NIC chipset. May be worth TRYING out on your system. Sometimes its trial and error. If this doesnt work, the other thing you can do is boot the system off of a live Linux distro and look to see what Generic Driver it is using and test to MAKE sure NIC works under this generic driver. Then hunt down that generic driver for Server 2003. Lastly, sometimes you can wrap a NDIS2 DOS driver to work for Windows/Server use but thats much more involved.

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2569&DwnldID=18807&ProductFamily=Server+Products&ProductLine=Intel%c2%ae+Server+Boards&ProductProduct=Intel%c2%ae+Server+Board+S3000AH&lang=engThat driver only seems to be x64 and Itaniumx64.
The os is x86
how do I use a live linux distro to find the generic driver?
Right now i use 3 live linuxes:
Ubuntu 12.10
Lubuntu 12.04
GParted
This topic, now that i see it, should probably be moved to the drivers category.

Solve : this installation package is not supported by this processor type?

Answer»

my computer config:Intel core i5-2450M CPU.2,50 GHz,.8GB RAM,64 bit OS,Windows 7 Home Basic

I had installed Windows SERVER 2008 on different partition and TRYING to Install Exchange Server 2010 64 Bit but it errors out
"This installation package is not SUPPORTED by this processor type"

Please help me ASAPRan into a similar issue years ago with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Professional 2002 on a Celeron 733Mhz. I figured since it stated it would run on a Pentium II 450Mhz that a Celeron 733Mhz would work, but I got the same error message and Microsoft Support told me to get a Pentium Class Processor system to run it on, so $600 later I installed it on a Pentium 4 2Ghz without issues.

In your situation the only HIT I find online for this processor incompatibility is with people trying to run Exchange Server 2010 in a virtual environment, although there are lots of complaints of i5 having issues with Server 2008 OS.

Not sure if your running into this CPU config issue with Server 2008 http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/334844-28-2500-features-missingI am not trying to install on Virtual environment..plain setup i tried for Exchange Server 2010 64 Bit..

UNLESS I'm misinterpreting Microsoft's specs, you need a Xeon processor to run Exchange (seems strange though). Alternatively, you could run it in Hyper-V and tell it that it has a Xeon.

Solve : Please Help - Streaming with Windows Server 8/12 to Apple devices/Android/?

Answer»

I've searched for awhile now and haven't been able to come up with a solution.

I am relatively new to media streaming but I'll try to explain my situation as best as I can. My company is looking stream videos to all users that are connected to our network. Users may connect with their Android, iOS and Windows devices as well as use in Google Chrome.

For the time being, all of our users have Windows XP. (The videos are for training on Windows 7, which we are upgrading to.)

I have looked in to RemoteFX, but I found that it is most likely not compatible with Windows XP. I have tried IIS Smooth Streaming with Server 2012 but it looks like it needs Expressions Encoder Pro, which is being discontinued soon.
I have also tried Windows Media Services but I couldn't find a way to DELIVER to APPLE devices (no Chrome EITHER)

Does anyone KNOW of a solution that would fit the needs I mentioned? Thank you greatly in advance. The last time we had to pre-recorded stream a video we used the free services of Youtube. Posted a training video up on there and so all computers no matter of make etc, as long as it could view youtube it could be VIEWED. Youtube also allows for you to set permissions on the videos to that it can only be viewed by private party etc, but there was nothing confidential about it, so it was out in the open. Also shut off comments on it so that no trolls decide to post anything inappropriate there. It worked flawlessly and was FREE!

If you need a live stream to teach people, I haven't tried that out yet to assist.

Unfortunately we will not have internet at different parts of our company, so this streaming service will have to work in network.

Solve : Web Site Server ??

Answer»

Windows Server 2003 Enterprise, Im trying to setup a server to host a site from. It says that in the description that it can be used for e-commerce Web sites but, not sure what that means. Also, hardware limitations of the machine will let me probably run only this version year
E-commerce

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-commerceok, so its not good to use for just running a siteIs the website going to be open to anyone, or is it just for testing, and therefore an internal site only? No, I was going to make it Public. I know that I WOULD have to set the DHCP an everything tooAh, I was just ASKING because I would've GONE a different route if it was to be private, something easier.
I wouldn't necessarily advise running a web server from home, a) it's usually against the terms of service of most internet service providers, and b) security risks. Running a web server means opening up that server, and hence your network, to the outside world to a greater degree than just browsing. I myself wouldn't want to take the risk, not when web hosting is available for free.I didnt want to have to deal with the ad's an limitations. Also, I will have to do this at work too Standard wouldnt be good to use :/What is the purpose of this "server" going to be ? ?Just to run an host a siteQuote from: Ryuk on June 28, 2013, 09:38:34 AM

I didnt want to have to deal with the ad's an limitations. Also, I will have to do this at work too Standard wouldnt be good to use :/

You'll only get ads if you use free hosting which I would generally advise against. If you take into account the cost of electricity to run that server 24/7 you would easily be able to get a paid, ad-free web hosting plan. You would probably also want to get a static IP to run the server at home which would also cost money. This would also be faster as webservers will usually have 100mbps or even gigabit upload speeds compared to a very high end home connection which would usually get around 10mbps. You also don't need to worry about security.Yes, using Microsoft server from home is not a good idea. Except for experimentation.

Many, many companies offer very low cost web hosting at prices lower that what you pay to keep a home computer running all day and night. Typical is about $2 per month for a basic sit with most features you would like. That is right. Two dollars a month, not $20 a month some say you must pay. If your traffic is light, the low-cost host is good enough for a small business.

About e-commerce, a common practices of some professionals is to link to a more web site for the transaction. First the customer finds an item of interest, then hi clicks a button to order ad pay. INFORMATION is passed to the secure that takes his personal information and placers the order. Then it returns the customer back to the regular web site. On such service is PayPal, part of the eBay company. This is very easy to use and the merchant only pays when thee is a transaction, no month FEE required.

I will not recommend any. Thee are too many. But you do not need to pay more that $2 per month and no setup fee. Times have changed. We site space is now the best low cost bargain for any business.

Solve : Printer Issue with Windows Server 2008 remote access?

Answer»

Hi all, I have a issue which is confusing me. Basically, I have 2 network printers at work, 1 is a Brother printer and the other is an HP.
So here's is problem. The Brother printer WORKS perfectly on all computers WITHIN my work and the desktop remote access connection. However, sometimes the printer DISAPPEARS at times and to GET it working I need to restart the remote access.
Any reason why the Brother printer disappears at times with no reason?

The second issue is the HP printer. The printer works on all computers in my work but it does not work on the remote access. Do I need to install the HP drivers onto the server which I am accessing on remote access?

ThanksOnly reason i can think of would be power management...
Right clik the Brother in Contral Panel/Device Manager...and uncheck "let Windows turn this device off to save power."...

Dumb MS default setting if you ask me.

As to the 2nd question the answer is Yes.Fair enough. I will have a look at the power saver rubbish. What about if that isn't the problem? Any other fixes? An update - Installed HP drives on server and now it work's perfectly.

I STILL have the issue on 1 computer - The printers just seem to disappear? This only happens on 1 computer and not the other, maybe slow network card? I tried to do the power saver rubbish but there is no option for this. The network card itself may have that power feature...check it also in Device Manager...

Solve : DHCP Servers?

Answer»

Hi EVERYONE,

I am wondering if anyone can clear up my confusion for the following situation.
In a networking practical EXAM, 5 students had to setup their own server-client network (server 2003 and windows xp)
the TEACHER allocated each student 1 server computer and 2 client computers, and the server's ip address assigned
for each student is shown below:

student 1: 192.168.1.1
student 2: 192.168.2.1
student 3: 192.168.3.1
student 4: 192.168.4.1
student 5: 192.168.5.1

I know there are two ways to connect the client computers to the server computer:
1. assign static ip address on the client computers or
2. add DHCP server

And by assigning an ip address on the client computers can guarantee both the server and clients are on the same network.
My question is how can a DHCP server give out ip address to the client computer that was allocated to me? The server can release ip address to any other student's client computers which did not have static ip assigned.

Assumptions:
1. None of the client computers for all students had static ip assigned.
2. All computers are connected to the same switch.

I would appreciate if anyone can clear this confusion up,
thank you!Read the documentation for the DHCP device.
It will have, or should have, a limited range of address that it can align.
Also, the client mt computers must each have a unique name and each network must have a unique network name.
Example:
Range of
192.168.2.1
to
192.168.2.5
will assign a maximum of five computers. No more. But only inside that range.Hi,

Thank you for your prompt rely,
I have figured out that if there are more 1 SERVERS are connected to the same switch, it is not possible for the server assigns ip address to a specific client computer, the servers actually lease out ip addresses to random client computers in this case. Another question is would it WORKS if I assign static DNS on the client computers, will they only communicate with servers that have the same DNS??

Solve : How do Virtual Servers in an Enterprise work??

Answer»

Hi all,

This might be a stupid questions but I am a bit confused about the virtual servers.

1. Say I have 5 virtual servers in a physical server, do the virtual servers share the same IP address of the physical server? or all of the servers have its unique ip address if I want to assign static ip to them. e.g. physical server: 192.168.1.10, virtual 1: 192.168.1.11, virtual 2: 192.168.1.12 and so on...

2. Say I have 5 physical servers and on each of them I will have 5 virtual servers. Do all of the virtual servers has its own domain? do I need multiple virtual domain controller? or just ONE?

3. I want to install about 100 virtual desktops on each of these virtual servers, do i need to run (TURN ON) all of them at the same time so that users can access their virtual desktops?

4. In terms of physical networking, I understand the basic concept of connecting to a router, server and CLIENT COMPUTERS to a switch so that users can access the server and internet. But say there are 1000 employees in the company, how do i connect multiple routers, switches for each server to allow user access?

I will appreciate for your help! Thanks heaps!!

Solve : Windows 2003 and IE10?

Answer»

We have a Windows 2003 Terminal SERVER environment which supports over 350 users. We have a requirement to use IE8 with google chrome pluggin and a new requirement to use IE10.
Does anyone know a way of using both IE versions on Windows 2003. I know IE10 isn't support on W2K3 so wondered if there was an virtualisation products or cloud products that would deliver this?
Thanks in advanceI SIMPLY can't understand the new requirement for IE10...don't they know it isn't supported on that OS ? ?MS have UPGRADE 365 which they only support on IE10. IE8 has PERFORMANCE issues on MS365 to the extent that its not really functional. IE10 isn't supported on the infrastructure we have and we can't upgrade it. I was hoping there would be a product, virtualised or in the cloud that would be able to do this.
Yes...a new version of Server.

Solve : Help with a simple batch file?

Answer»

Hi guys. I am trying to create a simple batch file. Batch file is going to do as follows

Once i click it, it will START the cmd in a certain location, and after that it should ask to user to execute a command within the same location. Here is what i have figure til now.

To start the cmd in certain location i have used the following command:

START cmd.exe /k "cd C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec DLO"

But when i try to get it to execute a command in that same location, for some reason it POPS up With another CMD window giving me the error sayint that this command is not recognized, obviously because the .exe file lays in the location i want cmd to start in.

Here is how my batch file looks like:

@echo off

START cmd.exe /k "cd C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec DLO"

pause

start DLOCommandu -ListMachines -V > C:\list.txt

Seriously, nobody can help?Maybe I'm necroposting... I don't think many PEOPLE look in the Windows Server section, and although you may intend to run the batch on a server OS, the QUESTION really is a generic batch one.

You don't need all those START commands.

@echo off
cd /d "C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec DLO"
pause
DLOCommandu -ListMachines -V > C:\list.txt

Solve : Batch request?

Hi I am not good with creating BATCH, I need ASSISTANCE creating one. Everytime my application crashes it leaves a log file, using that LOG file I want to restart the application by killing all processes first and then execute them again. If possible please help.

Here is what I need.

I want to create a batch which I will schedule to run every 1 minute or 2, it will check and do following:

1. Check if C:\MyFolder\Myfile.txt Exist <-- This is the trigger if log file is generated meaning the application got CRASHED, must get restarted.
2. If TRUE then kill all process NAMED as MyApplication.exe (There are atleast 4 - 5 instances running, I want to terminate all)
3. Once terminate then run three instances.
4. Run 1st instance "C:\Program Files (x86)\Application\application.exe" FirstInstance Parameters - Wait for 60 seconds

6. Run 3rd instance "C:\Program Files (x86)\Application\application.exe" ThirdInstance Parameters - Wait for 60 seconds
7. Delete C:\MyFolder\Myfile.txt
Exit

When I say Parameters my application has three different shortcuts on desktop when we execute, each have different parameters something like:

Hi,

I'm running WIN 2008 R2 64bit on an HP DL360 G7 and I'm trying to configure network teaming for LACP to a pair of Cisco Catalyst WS-C3750G-24-T-S switches.

Every time I try to open up the control panel window for the HP Network Configuration Utility (NCU) version 10.10.0.11 it errors with

Eventually after deleting the drivers for all NICs and connecting VIA ILO then reinstalling NIC drivers, Team drivers, and BIOS firmware, and rebooting it finally worked.Glad we were able to help you!

Often the solution to a problem is ---
the ability to state clearly what it sis.LOL!

Actually, you have a point.

An import part of Analytical TroubleShooting (TM) is to methodically document the Object/Defect and specify the What/When/Where/Extent of the problem, and so by posting the question on this forum forced me to use this process to demonstrate that I'm not a typical noob. By doing the required research I was able to resolve the issue for myself.

Solve : MMC cannot open the file C:\windows\system32\dsa.msc?

Answer»

Please help me I have problem on windows 2003 server service pack 1 version 1812 enterprise edition , previously infected virus then after cleaning virus, it will not start the Operating system then I repaired the operating system. After repaired the operating system it works properly, but when I click on manage user and computers in active directory cannot open the active directory . Here it is the massage displayed “MMC cannot open the file C:\windows\system32\dsa.msc” so how to solve this problem . tank you in advance While this has not been responded to in some time, in case you are still awaiting a solution:

I would PERFORM a clean install of Server 2003. Generally repair installations will FIX for corruption by MALWARE etc, but whenever a system has been hit by a virus or malware I dont chance it with a repair install as for there is the potential for the repair installation process to skip over replacement of files that have been altered and so formatting the hard drive and then a clean install is best.

*As ALWAYS back up important data first before any format and rebuild process, however if a system was hit by malware or a virus, I'd perform an extensive virus scan of that data before introducing it back to the clean BUILD.

Solve : Dell Poweredge 2850 error?

i have no clue what this means can anyone help me. I called Dell and was unable to receive help as previous owner's account is on hold.Replace the CMOS BATTERY...Part # CR2032...with all powe removed.
Then connect power and re-boot.

Was the PC used ? ?yes the pc is usedTry the above 1st...and report back with RESULTS...
It may have been setup to boot from a Network...which means you should WIPE the HDD and do a clean install of the Windows version of youre choice...

All Drivers will be at the Dell site.Is there an operating system on the server or have the hard drives been wiped. Try putting a bootable CD/DVD in and see if it will startup from that. It's fairly common for a PC to default to network boot if there is no OS on the hard drive and there are no other bootable devices present.how do i Replace the CMOS battery?

Make sure everything is unplugged...do i have to buy a new battery?still same error

Solve : Installing custom Fonts on large server cluster - Virtual application?

Answer»

Hello all, (NEW to the forum!)

I am trying to figure out a way to install a custom font onto our large multiple farm server cluster.
I have someone who needs to virtualize Microsoft Word 2010 and Microsoft Publisher 2010 but they need to use a custom font.
Typically, as I understand it, you would install the font file either by double clicking it to install it or dumping the font file in the c:/windows/fonts folder.
The problem arises when you have multiple servers, obviously this is quite cumbersome and will be tedious to do if requested again.

So my question is there an easier way to implement something LIKE this? MAYBE through roaming profile so the fonts follow the user? Or is there another LOCATION or method to remedy something like this?

Microsoft Office 2010 suite
Virtual application environment
Windows Server 2008 R2

Any help would be greatly APPRECIATED!

Solve : ThinkServer with Server 2012?

Answer»

Would you recommend a ThinkServer TS140 w/ Server 2012? Is it too much for what I would like to do? I only need to set one up to save files remotely, remote printer plus remote desktop and maybe a domain. Could I get away with a very high end i7 or a low end Xenon? It will be used in my home only. I have regular "off the shelf type" home pc with 32 gb of storage on a 500 GB HDD, 2 gb of ram and Windows 7 Pro now, but that won't cut it for if I want to set up a domain and saving files over the network from other computers to the "server" I know 1TB or 2TB would be an overkill now, since I don't use more then a 32 GB partition.

Recommendations? (only want a Lenovo)Older equipment can be used as a server. Your stuff looks good.
A domain will cost about $10 per year.
Le's review this. You want to have your own server located in your house you want to get into it from other places while traveling. Is that tight? How much data? 10 GB? Or maybe vc20? Most people seldom have more that 40 GB of personal data.

Noways many people use a "cloud" service for remote data. I have two I got for free. I also have two DOMAINS I use separately where I could store a large amount of data. But one thing I have never tried. I have never tried to build my own server.

Do you want you to make your own server for:
- better privacy?
- unlimited storage ?
- lower costs?
- as a hobby project?
The above could all fit your needs. But be aware about the downside of have your own DIY home service.
The capital cost is high, unless you already have the hardware.
Leaving it on 24/7 without somebody in the house may present a fire hazard.
If you want it to have high speed transfers, you will have to rent special connection. Most Internet connections are asymmetrical. The speed is faster in one direction.

Having somebody else do all the work would coast about $50 per month, but with limited storage.

There are a number of articles about how to build your own home server.
Build an Awesome $500 Windows Home Server
Quote

Power turned out to be the big differentiating factor on our Home Servers. While the dual-core Intel machine drew a meager 49W at idle and 70W under load, the quad-core Athlon was a juice guzzler in comparison--pulling 71W at idle and 90W under load. While it's true that it's a little unfair to compare power use between a dual-core and quad core, the performance (in video transcoding and network transfers) and price are close enough that we're comfortable making the comparison. And, the fact that the Intel machine was fast enough to do what we wanted while pulling less power was enough to make it the winner of our Windows Home Server test.
Does that help?
would like a prebuilt one... i can get one with an i7-4790, 4 gb of ram and a 1TB hdd

yes i would like to access my files away from home... server 2012 lets you create your own domain... i don't like and trust cloud storage, costly for more then the standard amount of storage (GOOGLE charges for more then 10 GB i think)

Is this purely for file storage? How many users are you planning? An i7 would be extremely powerful and likely a lot more than you would need if it is just a few users using it as a fileserver. HP Microservers are good value options and are very power efficient.

You may want to look at something a bit cheaper (i3, PENTIUM, Celeron) as an i7/Xeon could be a lot more power than you need. You may also want to consider Linux as a cheaper alternative to Windows Server which is very expensive.

When you say a "domain" are you referring to a Domain Name or an Active Directory Domain, if the latter, why do you need this for a home user?

I would also highly recommend getting one with a pair of hard drives and running them in RAID, you are running the machine 24/7 so you'd want some sort of redundancy on the hard drives.I only will have 6 or 7 computers accessing the server but not all at the same time

If I should go with a pentium or something then how would a core 2 duo from about the very beginning of the vista era (c. 2008) with 4 GB of ram do? I could get one for about 35 dollars IBM monitor, mouse, keyboard, and computer but is a Lenovo/IBM ThinkCentre and not something like a ThinkServer or ThinkStation but runs Vista Business. They claims it could run Windows 7 and Windows 8 is Windows 7 with a different interface, so I think Server 2008 or 2012 would work

I don't like Linux at all either An older machine like that would be fine as long as it can fit a pair of hard drives so you can RAID them - You would also need to factor in the cost of Windows Server 2012 for it.

I'd also recommend the HP microservers - They are reasonably priced, power efficient and designed for 24/7 operation. They also have space for plenty hard drives.Do not read this is you really hate Linux.
LINUX HOME SERVER GUIDE
You don't have to like Linux to use it.
Linux is well fitted to low-cost server. It works well both on a local network or on the Internet. At one time near half of all servers were SING some form of Linux and Apache. And not just because of cost. The software is well supported.

Is this to be mostly a server for people on the campus or facility?
How often would users have to get into the server from across town or across the state? Because in some places a local company can help you with a fast WAN to cover a limited region of a city.
Just saying....Well I finally got a ThinkCentre to work with Server 2012 after all the trouble... might need to get a larger hdd as it looks to have been on a server for quite some time in it's life do to the extremely small hdd for Windows Vista (when it used to have Vista) it has 4 gb of ram though, which may or may not be so good.... came with monitor, mouse and keyboard all which match the computer.... 35 dollars for allQuote from: Geek-9pm on December 11, 2014, 07:11:09 PM

Can anyone advise me.
nickie, you should probably be more DESCRIPTIVE about your overall goals. If it's just to connect that machine to the internet, what it's telling you is that you have your network connection CONFIGURED to obtain an ip address automatically. However, in order for it to do that, you need to have a DHCP server that can assign an ip address to it. Usually broadband routers or gateways will have a DHCP server built-in. If you know your network does not have a DHCP server, then you must configure the ip address manually like the message suggests.

Without using aliases, you can use the same options with the CLASS command. For example, CLASS Win32_Process GET Name, HANDLE, PageFaults. You can add folders to EmpTemp as you like.

Install and Share a Fax Printer for Network Users

Applies To: Windows Server 2008 R2

When you install the Fax Server role, if you have not attached a fax device to the computer, a local fax printer connection, Fax, is automatically created in the Printers folder in Control Panel. If that fax printer connection becomes corrupted or is deleted, you can create a new fax printer connection by adding a new fax account. If you have installed the Fax Server role and already have a fax printer installed, you should follow the steps in this procedure to share the printer so that users can connect.

This procedure describes how to create a new fax printer, and then share the printer so that your users can find it.
To create and share a new fax printer

1.

Click Start, click All Programs, and then click Windows Fax and Scan.
2.

Click Tools, and then click Fax Accounts.
3.

In Fax Accounts, click Add to open Fax Setup.
4.

On the Choose a fax modem or server page, click Connect to a fax modem.
5.

You may be asked to install a modem. To do this, follow the instructions in the Add Hardware Wizard.
6.

On the Choose a modem name page, type a name for the fax modem, and then click Next. The default name is Fax Modem.
7.

On the Choose how to receive faxes page, click the option that you prefer.
8.

The new fax modem should appear in Fax Accounts, under Account Name.
9.

Then, to share the printer that has been created, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
10.

Under Hardware, click View devices and printers.
11.

In the list of printers, right-click Fax, click Printer properties, click the Sharing tab, select Share this printer, and then type a name for the printer that you want your network users to see.
12.

If you want to enable users with computers running different versions of Windows to use this printer, click Additional Drivers to install the needed drivers.
13.

In Additional Drivers, select the check box for the architecture that you want to support. You are prompted to provide a path to the driver. Provide the path to the %windir%\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\prnms002.inf* file on a computer that is of the architecture that you want to support.
14.

To confirm that the files were copied properly, in Windows Explorer navigate to %windir%\System32\spool\drivers\ and look for the folder that contains the files for the selected architectures.

Can bring up the printer but scan is non responsible when i try to send a fax the Windows Fax. I can wait it out and it takes about 10 minutes and then the it sends the fax. The fax server works fine on all our other machines XP and Server 2003, but they all use fax console instead of Windows fax and Scan. Anyone have any ideas, or is there a way to install fax console on windows 7.No luck either with fax console. Maybe perhaps try using an alternative, such as RingCentral Fax or Home Office Internet Fax? I've used both before and they seem to work pretty well, and in the same ways console should work. Just an idea!Continuing the thread that will not die...Well done its a great job done by person who made this SITE.Quote from: tcrush on March 25, 2011, 04:06:30 PM

If you think Windows Fax and Scan may be the source of a problem with sending a fax, you can write a script that uses the Fax COM objects FaxComEx.FaxDocument and FaxComEx.FaxServer to attempt to send the fax.Quote from: RobertL on February 28, 2011, 07:04:32 AM

Solve : Operating system upgrade failed?

Answer»

thank you for that advice, i am well AWARE of that.
I would make a copy of the 2003 Server CD using NERO. Copy to HDD first and then to a new good quality CDR using data verification and see if the new CD is any better.

I have XP on drives C: and D: and had Server 2003 INSTALLED to a folder on drive F: for a while.ok i might GIVE that a try thanx MAC.

Solve : Dual Boot?

I have windows x64 installed on my pc, but it does not work right for all 32 bit applications. I WANT to install winxp 32 bit on my external hard drive so that I can run both. Is there any way to fool the bios into thinking that the external hard drive is internal (winxp cannot be installed on externals)? Taking the HDD out of the external case is not an option as I have to return it to its owner sometime in the future. It is a 100gb QueM3 firewire driveAre you trying to install windows on an External hard drive because you are going to connect it to another computer.... That wont work on the newer version of windows cause, I trued it before. It will give you an error message cause the DEVICES ex. video card, sound card. Will be diffrent then what it has stored. Id you just want to install 2 diffrent OS, I recomend you have an Old OS install first then install the new OS as new clean install instead of update. That really would work better. I Don't think Windows will work on external hard drives because 1. You always have to transfer infomation back and FORTH and a USB firewire can only go so fast. 2nd. If your wire becomes loose or falls off for some reason it will hurt the computerno, I just wanted to use the two different operating systems on my one computer so that I could run all my old 32 bit apps. I dont believe that there is any way to repartition my existing hard drtie without losing everything so I want to install the second os on my external. How is your drive partitioned and how much free-space does each partition have?

I have XP on drives C: and D: as you can see at left. I have also had Windows Server 2003 running in its own Folder on the F: drive.hello mac,

xp allows you to use multiple o/s on your pc.
what you need to do is create as many partitions on your disk as o/s you wish to install.

i.e 3 o/s = 3 partitions.

then install each o/s to a partition.

when you "boot up", xp will ask you which o/s you want to run.

give it a try,

regards pcbuilder
That is what I am doing now...

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professionnel" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
