Solve : Windows Server question...? |
Answer» I'm planning to study WINDOWS Server 2003 on my virtual machine. My question is, Is Windows Server 2003 SP1 obsolete? can it still be used in companies?Yes...Quote from: approach_is_positive on SEPTEMBER 22, 2012, 09:42:53 AM I'm planning to study Windows Server 2003 on my virtual machine. My question is, Is Windows Server 2003 SP1 obsolete? can it still be used in companies? It is used in a lot of companies, but as previously pointed out, is obsolete. Most companies that have Server 2003 are counting down the DAYS to get to Server 2008/R2, and with Server 2012 right around the CORNER, I wouldn't RECOMMEND wasting time on Server 2003. |

Solve : Want to be able to have workgroups access the internet when server is off? |
Answer» I have a server running windows 2000. We have 10 computers connected to the domain. We used to use the server to share files and hold some BACKUP files. We do not need to be connected anymore. Basically, I want to do away with the Dinosaur aged server and just have each computer run independently, PERHAPS share a few folders. I have done some tests with unplugging the servers internet connection to see how the computers would react. Everything works the way I want it to (able to share folders) but the work computers lose internet. How do I set up the computers so they can interdependently access the internet without going through the server? We have a ROUTER switch. Thank you in advance! Thanks Rich. Yes, we are connected via a domain. We are all on XP Professional but the server is 2000. If I unjoin the domain will my computer automatically pick up the IP via DHCP from the router when I join a workgroup, or is this something you have to manually point your computer to? Also, is there a way to unjoin a domain and keep all of the settings (outlook, programs, logon info, documents, ect) the same? Thank you very much for the help. John, if the existing router set up to issue IP's then unjoining from the domain will work. BUT if your server is running DHCP and DNS, then your going to have serious problems. If your domain is running Exchange, then your outlook will not work. Additionally, I would be leary of unjoining from the domain as your documents will not be AVAILABLE to you as a non-domain user. are you the administrator for the windows 2000 domain? Rich Rich- Although not too experienced I am the administrator. Is it easy enough for me to sit at the server and find out whether we are running DHCP and DNS? I am worried that our server is soooo old that it is not going to make it very much longer. I am concerned I will show up to work one day and it will have crashed overnight. Like I mentioned in previous posts, we do not need the server any longer. I just want to set up some simple sharing via a workgroup. Any suggestions moving forward? Would I have any options if the server crashed? Thank you for all the help! John |

Solve : changing the welcome screen text across computers on the domain? |
Answer» Our school is running Server 2003, all of the classroom computers and laptops log into it. The previous teacher changed the welcome text to say, "...If you have any problems please contact Mr. Schroeder." Well he has left and I contacted him to find out how he changed it. He can not remember. I checked Google and was able to find how to change the text on a COMPUTER, but when I changed it on the server it did not carry over to the client computer. I rebooted both the server and the client I was testing. |

Solve : Web Site Server ?? |
Answer» Windows Server 2003 Enterprise, Im trying to setup a server to host a site from. It says that in the description that it can be used for e-commerce Web sites but, not sure what that means. Also, hardware limitations of the machine will let me probably run only this version year I didnt want to have to deal with the ad's an limitations. Also, I will have to do this at work too Standard wouldnt be good to use :/ You'll only get ads if you use free hosting which I would generally advise against. If you take into account the cost of electricity to run that server 24/7 you would easily be able to get a paid, ad-free web hosting plan. You would probably also want to get a static IP to run the server at home which would also cost money. This would also be faster as webservers will usually have 100mbps or even gigabit upload speeds compared to a very high end home connection which would usually get around 10mbps. You also don't need to worry about security.Yes, using Microsoft server from home is not a good idea. Except for experimentation. Many, many companies offer very low cost web hosting at prices lower that what you pay to keep a home computer running all day and night. Typical is about $2 per month for a basic sit with most features you would like. That is right. Two dollars a month, not $20 a month some say you must pay. If your traffic is light, the low-cost host is good enough for a small business. About e-commerce, a common practices of some professionals is to link to a more web site for the transaction. First the customer finds an item of interest, then hi clicks a button to order ad pay. INFORMATION is passed to the secure that takes his personal information and placers the order. Then it returns the customer back to the regular web site. On such service is PayPal, part of the eBay company. This is very easy to use and the merchant only pays when thee is a transaction, no month FEE required. I will not recommend any. Thee are too many. But you do not need to pay more that $2 per month and no setup fee. Times have changed. We site space is now the best low cost bargain for any business. Solve : ThinkServer with Server 2012? |
Answer» Would you recommend a ThinkServer TS140 w/ Server 2012? Is it too much for what I would like to do? I only need to set one up to save files remotely, remote printer plus remote desktop and maybe a domain. Could I get away with a very high end i7 or a low end Xenon? It will be used in my home only. I have regular "off the shelf type" home pc with 32 gb of storage on a 500 GB HDD, 2 gb of ram and Windows 7 Pro now, but that won't cut it for if I want to set up a domain and saving files over the network from other computers to the "server" I know 1TB or 2TB would be an overkill now, since I don't use more then a 32 GB partition. Power turned out to be the big differentiating factor on our Home Servers. While the dual-core Intel machine drew a meager 49W at idle and 70W under load, the quad-core Athlon was a juice guzzler in comparison--pulling 71W at idle and 90W under load. While it's true that it's a little unfair to compare power use between a dual-core and quad core, the performance (in video transcoding and network transfers) and price are close enough that we're comfortable making the comparison. And, the fact that the Intel machine was fast enough to do what we wanted while pulling less power was enough to make it the winner of our Windows Home Server test.Does that help? would like a prebuilt one... i can get one with an i7-4790, 4 gb of ram and a 1TB hdd yes i would like to access my files away from home... server 2012 lets you create your own domain... i don't like and trust cloud storage, costly for more then the standard amount of storage (GOOGLE charges for more then 10 GB i think) Is this purely for file storage? How many users are you planning? An i7 would be extremely powerful and likely a lot more than you would need if it is just a few users using it as a fileserver. HP Microservers are good value options and are very power efficient. You may want to look at something a bit cheaper (i3, PENTIUM, Celeron) as an i7/Xeon could be a lot more power than you need. You may also want to consider Linux as a cheaper alternative to Windows Server which is very expensive. When you say a "domain" are you referring to a Domain Name or an Active Directory Domain, if the latter, why do you need this for a home user? I would also highly recommend getting one with a pair of hard drives and running them in RAID, you are running the machine 24/7 so you'd want some sort of redundancy on the hard drives.I only will have 6 or 7 computers accessing the server but not all at the same time If I should go with a pentium or something then how would a core 2 duo from about the very beginning of the vista era (c. 2008) with 4 GB of ram do? I could get one for about 35 dollars IBM monitor, mouse, keyboard, and computer but is a Lenovo/IBM ThinkCentre and not something like a ThinkServer or ThinkStation but runs Vista Business. They claims it could run Windows 7 and Windows 8 is Windows 7 with a different interface, so I think Server 2008 or 2012 would work I don't like Linux at all either An older machine like that would be fine as long as it can fit a pair of hard drives so you can RAID them - You would also need to factor in the cost of Windows Server 2012 for it. I'd also recommend the HP microservers - They are reasonably priced, power efficient and designed for 24/7 operation. They also have space for plenty hard drives.Do not read this is you really hate Linux. LINUX HOME SERVER GUIDE You don't have to like Linux to use it. Linux is well fitted to low-cost server. It works well both on a local network or on the Internet. At one time near half of all servers were SING some form of Linux and Apache. And not just because of cost. The software is well supported. Is this to be mostly a server for people on the campus or facility? How often would users have to get into the server from across town or across the state? Because in some places a local company can help you with a fast WAN to cover a limited region of a city. Just saying....Well I finally got a ThinkCentre to work with Server 2012 after all the trouble... might need to get a larger hdd as it looks to have been on a server for quite some time in it's life do to the extremely small hdd for Windows Vista (when it used to have Vista) it has 4 gb of ram though, which may or may not be so good.... came with monitor, mouse and keyboard all which match the computer.... 35 dollars for allQuote from: Geek-9pm on December 11, 2014, 07:11:09 PM Do not read this is you really hate Linux. I got one of the only ISP in my area and I got the 4th or 5th speed up from the bottom... fast enough for me to watch youtube videos in 720P (I would like to watch one of the people I subscribe to in 4k but it's not a necessity) |

Solve : Batch File and WMIC command? |
Answer» Hello, The Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC) is a command-line and scripting interface that SIMPLIFIES the use of Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) and systems managed through WMI. WMIC is based on aliases. Therefore MS is your best source of information. https://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/wmic.mspx Quote Without using aliases, you can use the same options with the CLASS command. For example, CLASS Win32_Process GET Name, HANDLE, PageFaults. However, you must determine the name of the class from other SOURCES. To do the equivalent of the alias Where clause, you must use PATH Win32_Process.Description="explorer.exe".Hope that helps you. |

Yeah, sometimes it's the simple things that stump US... Install and Share a Fax Printer for Network Users Applies To: Windows Server 2008 R2 When you install the Fax Server role, if you have not attached a fax device to the computer, a local fax printer connection, Fax, is automatically created in the Printers folder in Control Panel. If that fax printer connection becomes corrupted or is deleted, you can create a new fax printer connection by adding a new fax account. If you have installed the Fax Server role and already have a fax printer installed, you should follow the steps in this procedure to share the printer so that users can connect. This procedure describes how to create a new fax printer, and then share the printer so that your users can find it. To create and share a new fax printer 1. Click Start, click All Programs, and then click Windows Fax and Scan. 2. Click Tools, and then click Fax Accounts. 3. In Fax Accounts, click Add to open Fax Setup. 4. On the Choose a fax modem or server page, click Connect to a fax modem. 5. You may be asked to install a modem. To do this, follow the instructions in the Add Hardware Wizard. 6. On the Choose a modem name page, type a name for the fax modem, and then click Next. The default name is Fax Modem. 7. On the Choose how to receive faxes page, click the option that you prefer. 8. The new fax modem should appear in Fax Accounts, under Account Name. 9. Then, to share the printer that has been created, click Start, and then click Control Panel. 10. Under Hardware, click View devices and printers. 11. In the list of printers, right-click Fax, click Printer properties, click the Sharing tab, select Share this printer, and then type a name for the printer that you want your network users to see. 12. If you want to enable users with computers running different versions of Windows to use this printer, click Additional Drivers to install the needed drivers. 13. In Additional Drivers, select the check box for the architecture that you want to support. You are prompted to provide a path to the driver. Provide the path to the %windir%\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\prnms002.inf* file on a computer that is of the architecture that you want to support. 14. To confirm that the files were copied properly, in Windows Explorer navigate to %windir%\System32\spool\drivers\ and look for the folder that contains the files for the selected architectures. Answer» I have windows x64 installed on my pc, but it does not work right for all 32 bit applications. I WANT to install winxp 32 bit on my external hard drive so that I can run both. Is there any way to fool the bios into thinking that the external hard drive is internal (winxp cannot be installed on externals)? Taking the HDD out of the external case is not an option as I have to return it to its owner sometime in the future. It is a 100gb QueM3 firewire driveAre you trying to install windows on an External hard drive because you are going to connect it to another computer.... That wont work on the newer version of windows cause, I trued it before. It will give you an error message cause the DEVICES ex. video card, sound card. Will be diffrent then what it has stored. Id you just want to install 2 diffrent OS, I recomend you have an Old OS install first then install the new OS as new clean install instead of update. That really would work better. I Don't think Windows will work on external hard drives because 1. You always have to transfer infomation back and FORTH and a USB firewire can only go so fast. 2nd. If your wire becomes loose or falls off for some reason it will hurt the computerno, I just wanted to use the two different operating systems on my one computer so that I could run all my old 32 bit apps. I dont believe that there is any way to repartition my existing hard drtie without losing everything so I want to install the second os on my external. How is your drive partitioned and how much free-space does each partition have? |
