I have a client who shares a Kodak Pan xray machine with another doctor  in the same building, prior to this they were using an XP PRO box as a server for Eaglesoft practice management software, and they were not on a domain, now one DR has a Domain  server running Server Standard 2003.
Is there a way to give the   workgroup stand alone COMPUTER access to the domain? The other network is a workgroup and not a domain.
Some how they have setup 2 different network card2 with diferent ip address
ThanksWhat services in the domain are you trying to access? There's usually ways to get access into a domain, but methods vary BASED on needs.Joining the domain is easy, as long as it's XP Pro and not XP Home:

Start -> CONTROL Panel -> System -> Computer Name tab -> Change button -> Domain RADIO button -> type the name of the domain -> type in credentials for a domain admin -> wait about 10 seconds or so (less if the computer object is already in Active Directory in an OU) -> "Welcome to the _____ domain." -> "You must restart your computer for the settings to take effect." -> click OK -> when asked to reboot, say Yes. -> after reboot, log on with a domain user account.

Now if you just want the computer to have access to domain resources, but not be a member of the domain, Start -> Run -> type in the UNC path of the network share in question and click OK -> when asked for credentials, provide them -> if the account has rights, you're in!

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how long it should take for a new SSL Cert to GET to the PC trying to connect. It seems to be taking way to long? The old one did expire so, so it is CAUSING some issues.

SSL Cert for EXCHANGE 2007I found certificates should be instant, so I looked into our system and found that I needed to install it one level up, so I did that and it's FINE now.

I am getting this error when trying to start Hyper-V-VMMS.

"Cannot create a self-signed certificate. Error: 'Unspecified error' (0x80004005)."

From the research I have done the usual solutions are failing or not working correctly. If any one has experience with hyper v or has has this issue please let me KNOW some tricks I can try.Can we have a bit more info like what is your base operating system.
Is it Hyper V 2008 Server or a full Windows 2008 install.
Is it 2008 R2.it is a 2008 server running hyper-v. The vm was working until a few weeks ago. Have tried removing and re setting up the service on the system with no avail.  Have you read this over?

I feel retarded for askin but I'm stumped...

I have certain users that are apart of the  NETWORK CONFIGURATION OPERATORS and REMOTE DESKTOP USERS built-in Windows 2003 ACTIVE Directory Groups.

By adding the Users to these Groups this has no effect. So what do I have to do within a GPO to apply these settings across a domain. I know I can locally do this to each computer but I NEED these Users to modify TCP/IP and Remote Desktop into EVERY computer in the domain - so adding it locally is to much admin overhead.

XP workstations...2003 serversI don't have my vm setup to AD right now to test this out but here are two ways of doing what you're trying.

First I don't think by adding your users to the mentioned groups in AD automatically adds them to those groups in the local pcs. So if you want to add your users to those groups via policy then the one you are looking for is called Restricted Groups. This will make sure they are put in the groups in the local pcs. It's under computer CONFIG/windows sets/security sets/.

The other way is to create a domain group and then using the delegation wizard to give it the rights you want them to have. Whether or not these rights exist you'll have to find out when you use the wizard.

Last but not least, no one knows the answer to everything so you shouldn't feel retarded for asking this. Asking questions, practicing and reading as much as material as you can is how you learn your craft. Bye.Yea I already tried messing with the Restricted Groups in AD but no go...I'll try again today and reply back a little later. Thanks...Delegation wizard doesn't offer what I need. That seems to only be for AD controls, such as creating/deleting GPO's, etc.

As for Restricted Groups...
 - Created a new GPO "TESTGPO" (Enforced it in the correct OU with the users/computers)
 - Withing "TESTGPO" I added the restricted group "Group1"
 - In the "Members of this Group" section I added "User1"
  - In the "This Group is a Member of" section there is no possible way to add AD Built-in groups
With that being said...How do I give "User1" the right to only modify TCP\IP on every computer in the domain?

Again, "Group1" is a member of the AD Built-in group "Network Configuration Operators" and "User1" is a member of "Group1". I've never had to mess with the security of a group but I added Authenticated Users with Full Control, nothing.I think you're supposed to used Remote & Network groups in the GPO that you want restricted. Then you add members such as GROUP1 or USER1 into it. In this situation you don't have to worry about THIS GROUP IS A MEMBER OF. That is just for more granular control of what group it should or shouldn't belong to. We don't really need this because we already are specifying the Network Config group and its members in the first tab. Not sure if I made sense or not. But here's a quick summary:

You had restricted group being group1 > members user1 >

group is a member of > network config (which you found out can't be done)

So ...

Restricted group should be Network Config > members should be group1 or user1

no need for GROUP IS A MEMBER OF

I knew it would be something simple I didn't try. Never EVEN thought to add the Built-in groups to the Restricted Group GPO setting...don't ask me why. Probably would of never figured it out, considering I already had it in my head Built-in Groups couldn't be added there.
Thanks again...err I wish I had that intuition to just sit and figure these types of problems out. Overlooking something this simple is really frustrating. Not to mention, this is a setting that almost every Domain Admin should know and need.

If you're running Windows Server 2008 (R1 or R2), you can create a scheduled task based on EVENTS.

You'll have to do two things (I'm recalling this off the top of my head, so it may not be exact):

I.  Set the server to audit logon events

1) Start -> Run -> type in gpedit.msc and click OK.
2) Computer Configuration -> Policies -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Audit Policies
3) Enable "Audit Logon Events" and, I think "Audit Account Logon Events."  Click OK and close out of the Group Policy Object Editor.
4) Start -> Run -> type in cmd and click OK.
5) Type in gpupdate in the command prompt and click OK.


II. Create an appropriate scheduled task

1) MANUALLY log into your FTP server and see if SOMETHING appears in the Event Viewer under "Security."  If it does, make a note of the number and source.  Now log off.  See if something else appears.  The source should be the same, but the number should be different.  You'll need these for your Scheduled Task.
2) Start -> Administrative Tools -> Task Scheduler.
3) Create Task (not Basic task).
4) Check the check boxes that allow it to run whether or not a user is LOGGED in and run with highest privileges.
5) Under the "Triggers" tab, click "New."
6) Set the trigger to fire "On an event."  Select the source and number for the logoff event that you noted during Step 1 above. 
7) Go to the "Action" tab and select "Run a program."  Select the script you want to run.
Click OK.  Type in the appropriate user name/password to the server (one that has rights to run the task). 
9) Test it out by LOGGING in and out via FTP.  See if the scheduled task fires. 

If you wish to have me clarify some steps, let me know.  I'll check a Server 2008 machine and get the exact verbiage if necessary.

Im trying to understand what a DMZ  zone does...

I understand its an extra LAYER of proctection for a LAN from intruders trying to get into an organization externaly VIA, e-mail, web, and dns servers. These risks are PLACED into a sub-network in order to protect the rest of the network.

So in other words in a DMZ zone you would have e-mail, web, and dns servers.....is there anything else?What else goes in the dmz is really up to you and your needs for the dmz. Best thing to do is do some RESEARCH and figure out what your needs are.
In my dmz, all I've got is a single web server with only http and ssh allowed through the firewall. That's all I need. The larger IT network where I work has http, ssh, rdp, dns, email, and probably more allowed on several servers.

Can anyone help me log into Microsoft GP using a .bat FILE?  I have a file set up in which it starts the program, but then I need to enter a server, username, and password.  After I click OK, I then have to enter a DATABASE and click OK again.  Can anyone help me do this using a .bat file?

We are using a citrix environment and in one profile we suddenly are not able to open attachments in the mail. On the same machine but with a different login we are able to open them.

This appeared on this account at first on citrix 1 but now it also happens on citrx 2.

If we login with webmail we till can open them 

If we want to open mail in outlook 2000 it asks if we want to open it or save it, but neither can be doneWe are going to need a lot more information in ORDER to help you. So far, we know that Citrix and Server 2003 are involved in some FASHION (not sure how) and that you're using Outlook 2000. Not nearly enough information to figure out what the problem is.
Also, are you the systems/network administrator or is that someone else's job?

We are working with an window server and exchange, to login with tin clients at our office we use citrix to go to our windows application server.

Untill some days ago outlook and opening the attachments did work fine, but suddenly outlook doesn't open the attachments in just one profile any more. It's still working on behave of my colleges. On the internet i found SOMETHING about temp files that are too BIG or adjusting the register.....I'm not familiar at all with Citrix, so I can't really help much with that, but one thing you could try is renaming or deleting the user profile in question (C:\Documents and Settings\*user*\). It's possible something just got corrupted and is affecting the way files/attachments open.

On a Windows Server 2003 machine that I am administering, some employees have ceased using the system. In the QUOTA entries for the hard drive on the server, it states that a user has a total of 1.09GB of files on the server.

In their My Documents folder, they have 500MB of files. The rest of their files are spread over the server in many folders.

If you have quotas enabled on a Windows file server, you may need to locate where all the files a user owns are to work out why their quota just keeps going up and up (and up)…

FSUtil in Windows Server 2003 can do just that (and a lot more). Use the following syntax to find all files owned by a specific user:
fsutil file findbysid

Userid can be the user’s windows login and the PATH should be the base directory, it will recurse through sub-directories. Script it up a little and you can get a decent REPORT of quota usage by path.

There is a whole bunch of file server administrative tasks that can be scripted using FSUtil. Very, very good.

ALSO There's a small utility that searches based on owner or SID at http://www.grimadmin.com/staticpages/index.php/file-owner  and lets you export what it finds to a comma-separated text file... It is an exact match for your requirement but you need to delete them manually..

Also, this TOOL (delybown.exe) looks cool, though i haven’t tried it but if it works as advertised would definitely be useful.

 am using terminal services for the remote USERS to access my application... which i given path in the "Environment Tab" in the user properties. Now for one user they continues telling that they are unable to access application ..... i.e., they are able to login terminal services but it shows blue screen..   after this when i do forceablly  log-off or if i remove and PAST the application path in " Env Tab" then its working fine.

 am not getting what the problem...  do i need to increase RAM to come over this..

Can you go more into detail about your setup?for few terminal users we did this kind of setup... when they open the TS account  appropriate application will come on screen...    This we can achieve by giving the application path in Env tab...  we can able to set this as follows...

Active Directory  users and computers --> users --> "useraccount"--> right click and go to "properties" --> click on "Environment Tab" --> click on check box "Start with this application" --> Provide the path.

... for few users they are unable to get this application when they logged into the account..  and blue screen was showing(IE., application wasn't starting)..Check the path to make sure it is entered correctly.
What's the processor and memory usage on the terminal SERVER? How much ram is installed?Maybe the app's not compatible with Terminal Services?

After that , I log off and logon to Domain by RDP, and logon local admin but failed. Could you someone to tell me what can I do to RESET or recovery  logon local administrator without reboot.  Are you trying to log on to the MACHINE through Remote Desktop using the Local Administrator account?

That's blocked by deafult when you add a server to a domain.  There might be a way to enable the functionality remotely, but I'm not sure.

Ok got a fun problem that I might be over LOOKING something simple hope you guys can help. I have a net WORK set up for 40 people the server is Server 2003 and the terminal is running xp pro the user cannot get on the internet but can still connect fine with my mail server that is running the same software.  but all other uses that log into that terminal can access both.  help... oh yeah wanted to TELL you nothing has been changed on the server and the user's internet was work 2 weeks ago.  Check for malware on server and client?

Go to C:\Documents and Settings (Windows XP) or C:\Users (Vista & Win7), and rename her user folder. Shouldn't actually have to delete it unless you want to.
It won't remove any programs you have installed. Those should all be stored in your program files directory.

What i'm looking to do is create an application for a PIECE of software that takes a backup of all the relevant files and folders attached to the software, and relevant registry keys - so that it can be copied onto a new PC, with all the registry keys that have been backed up can replace the current ones.

What I'm thinking about is creating the interface in visual basic, and then using scripts to carry out all the procedures, rather than having to do each part manually.
Is it possible to copy the registry keys using script? If so, do you know what kind it would be? ie.e VBscript, Windows scripting, etc.

Group Policy is probably what you want to use.
In group policy editor, look for User Configuration -> Policies -> Windows Settings -> Scripts (Logon/Logoff)

in my script in want a specific command to run only once on each client. i dont want it to run everytime the client logs in..

I'm trying out windows server, want to see how it all works and get some experience. One thing I've noticed it's nothing like Windows 7, it does not automatically INSTALL everything and it doesn't seem to work with wireless.

Now I've got PRETTY much everything working from hardware except the graphics card.

I have Radeon 4650 HD and it doesn't show that the system recognizes it when I do the dxdiag. It's a 64 bit system, so I've tried the 64 bit windows 7 drivers, and it seems that it doesn't work still, but it has installed it.

So, my question is, how do I get my graphics card to work on Windows Server 2008 R2?Have you tried drivers made for Server 2008 ? ?
I believe thats what you will need to get the card working right.What is not working graphics wise?  If it is the lack of Aero - That has to be enabled first.

However please note that enabling aero.etc will cause extra overhead.I know that some Vista drivers will work in Win7 and vice-versa...

I got some errors related to usd.exe, and i cannot find anything on this. The result i had was that usd.exe is a virus, but i don't think so.
Maybe i got a HINT, the client we got had his application using Oracle Database STOP working, i don't know if it's related.

Here are some error message that were in the event viewer:
Hanging application usd.exe, version 1.0.3.3, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

After the server was rebooted, there was this message:
Faulting application usd.exe, version 1.0.3.3, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.2.3790.4455, fault address 0x0001bd02.

The server is a Win2k3.

If someone can HELP me, it will be appreciated!

I'm running Small Business Server 2003, and am managing Active DIRECTORY. I accidentally failed to ADD a computer to the domain WITHIN AD, but have connected the computer to the domain. When I TRY to add the computer to the AD list, it says that the computername is already in use.

How can I reconcile this?How are you trying to join it to the domain? I've ran into the same kind of issue before, but it sounds like you're doing THINGS a bit different than I normally do.

The file temp.log resides under the folder ABC under E: drive. I want to check for the entry "A" within this file before proceeding with the next step. The script should simply go to the next step if it finds, otherwise it should exit by alerting the user.

I tried to keep one IP in Reservation (DHCP) for this server... but it showing "inactive".

could anybody tell me why its happening...

I was told by the company management, that i will be replacing one of our Network Admin who resigned, and as such i should start preparing myself to work on Win server 2003 environment.
I did a course on win srv 2003 sometime back and never REALY put it into practice and i forgot must of the things i learned since the course was more theory than practice.

A friend suggested i should use VMWARE server to get my hands on practice. I downloaded and installed vmware server, i also installed win xp pro, but i am bit reluctant installing win srv2003 due to the fact that there my be some issues i should consider before proceeding with the installation.

What i NEED to accomplish is: Install and configure win srv2003 as if it is in a company environment, install and configure AD, DNS, IIS, DHCP, Exchange server and what ever is necessary anyone can please suggest me what to include as well.

I am doing all this on my Laptop, is it possibel to run all the necessary servers and clients on this virtaul software in just one laptop as if it was in a corporate environment? If anyone as a guide on this please help. If your laptop has enough horsepower, I don't SEE why you couldn't do it. I've never done anything with Exchange before, but domain controllers (with AD, DNS, DHCP) and IIS are simple enough to set up if you use the wizard to do it.

What are the things to consider when using vmware, for this procedure?I don't usually use vmware, I use Hyper-V mostly. But, you'll need to have enough ram on your laptop to run several operating systems as virtual machines. You might check on craigslist for any old computers people are giving away if you don't think your laptop has what it takes.
It's not that difficult to install an os on a virtual machine. It's almost exactly the same as installing on real hardware. Just start playing around with settings and stuff in the virtual host. i am USING windows server 2003 ent.  i set up 2 raids one 3.5tb the other 7.0tb.  COMPUTER management shows the drive at 2.047tb.I believe your problem is directly related to this:

I am using a fax modem set up on a SBS Server 2003, and want to set it to NOT send faxes between 8pm and 8am.

Faxing occurs through Outlook: users (domain, exchange) send a MESSAGE to a 'Business Fax' contact using the Fax Mail Transport, which sends their fax to a shared fax modem on our server.

In the 'Fax Console' setup, there's a field where I can mark 'Discount Rate Hours', theoretically forcing all faxes marked 'Discount Rate only' to wait until discount rate hours to send. I don't know how to mark the faxes as such...

I'm not set on that solution, if you all have any other ideas that'd be SWELL too.

-GrahamYou could use task scheduler to run a batch file that TURNS on/off the fax service.My concern is that doing so will 'fail' faxes that are still in the queue. It is VERY important that the faxing resumes where it left off at 8am.

Will turning off the fax service cause this problem? The environement (and fax queue) are in a state at the moment where it is difficult to test solutions that could potentially cause us to lose faxes.

I guess another option would be to use a batch file to turn off the modem connection at 8pm.Once again, I believe that will 'fail' faxes in the queue, which wouldn't make that a viable option. The faxes will already be spooled (i.e. in the queue), I just need to make sure that they don't 1) get sent between 8pm and 8am, and 2) get 'failed'.Hmm, got me stumped on this one.

Why is it REQUIRED?  You could end up SPENDING a lot of time sorting this out, so you need to be 100% sure it is required, and worth your time.

Off the top of my head, how about disabling, or switching off, the modem and leaving the service on?

It might be worth doing some testing.  As a rule, if you can do it in the GUI, there is normally a way to do it in the command-line, which means you should be able to script it.

Unless your programs are several millions lines long, that won't take long enough to justify such a upgrade.

clustering is used for database servers, not for development or build machines.

program is only about 250 lines, but has to process over a million calculations.

with each calculation taking about 5 seconds because it needs to compare a result with an array with size about 270 000 using binary search.

VS2010 limits the max process it can use to 50% of CPU max, which is good so my computer doesnt freeze but i need more grunt.

maybe i should look into using a different search method but regardless it will still take a long time without a cluster

That has nothing to do with compilation speed, then.
A binary search of 270,000 elements would only take 17 iterations. an Imperceptible time- certainly less them 5 seconds. Clearly you are doing something wrong, or not explaining something; the binary search is clearly the less time consuming part of your "calculations".
VS2010 doesn't impose any limitation on the CPU usage of your process. But with a Dual core, you are going to have to have at least two threads (one for each core). This same restriction is imposed in a cluster- you cannot have a single process suddenly parallelized simply by running it on a cluster, it needs to have discrete chunks so that it's work can be divvy'd up.
Binary search is one of the most efficient methods. From the sounds of things, you aren't using it. If it takes that long on that configuration it sounds more like you are doing a sequential search, not a binary search.

Clearly you aren't using an Actual database, otherwise you could just run a query on it. Sounds like when you say "database" you really mean "text file with data inside".

It doesn't come down to faster processing speed. It never comes down to faster processing speed.

This server was rebuilt over the weekend, so all files were restored to their new location. Which was replicated exactly the same as before the crash.

The users connect into there home Directory U:, but they are not synchronizing correctly.

Active directory SHOWS \\server\filestore\user
But when clicking on the U: drive they GET straight into the filestore folder with access to all folders.

The only big difference is the previous install was 86x and a domain controller. The new install is 64x and has not been promoted back yet.

How are you mapping the drive to the share?
How did you restore?So I never restored the files to the server. The PC's should have SYNCED up and restored there own My Documents. Active directory has U set as there home directory which I had to restore. SO the problem was that maybe 25% connected back correctly and synced up correctly. The rest didnt. So as it turned out, the other 3/2ths of the PC's had the U drive ACTUALLY mapped instead of the AD control. SO no biggy. Added a U drive delete command in my logon script and emailed everyone telling them to reboot. All problems now solved.

ok did a move about two weeks ago from an old Small biz server 2003 to  server 2008 R2  we had a file redriect going for the mydocs on the old SBS 03 server. MOVED all the files to the new R2 server and told the GP that the new home folder was on the new R2 server.  olny about half of the client computer did the switch the other half are still looking for the old server to sync offline files with and it is really lagging down their boxes they can't do anything with out the computer looking for the old share folder.  we have changed the GP to disable Offline files and have taken off the redriection of the mydocs folder. and still the computer will no update the GP even if i go into the  computer and do the /gpupdate/force it says everything was updated but still doing the same stuff. I know its not a computer problem if i log on to the computer with my account everything is updated and works like it should but log in with any of the troubled users accounts and they still look for the old server don't see any scripts running on their AD profile or anything.   I am very lost.  Oh all Cleints are running VISTA Biz with all UPDATES and service packs. 
I have never seen anything like this, ANYONE got some idea's. Might be a gpo problem. You say if you log into their PC everything works like it should. Have you tried having one of them log into your pc? What was the result? Check the gpo & its placement.

Is it configured for user or computer configuration?
Do you have multiple gpo with file redirect?
Do you have multiple OUs?
Are the users / computers in their right ou?

Do a gpresult command in one of the client pc having problems to see if the gpo for file redirect is being applied.

If all else fails save any important files from their pc & rename their user profile folder to something like userOLD. Then have them login again & see if it works. If it does then restore the files you saved earlier. I've seen this a few times and it's usually been a profile problem. Delete (or rename) the affected profile folder and the corresponding registry items for the user (HKLM\software\microsoft\windows nt\current version\profilelist\s-1-5-21-xxxxx), and try logging them in again.
If that doesn't work, remove the pc from the domain and rejoin. Sometimes the hardware password needs to be reset manually for it to resync.Ok fixed this problem just in case anyone else ever has it here was the fix I cam up with.

On my Windows Server 2008 Enterprise, the AD DS I installed hid the user accounts in someway and I can't log in to them. The files are still there and reg. files say where the files are but the login is gone.There may be a filter in place. Look for a "funnel" icon & see if it's on. If not your accounts are probably deleted. Try hitting refresh. If that doesn't work, do a search to find the accounts and locate them that way.
If you can't log in to them, they may have been deleted. Do you have backups?Neither of these work as it is a problem within Windows itself. i did not make a backup which i have learned the hard way is super important to do.

When ever I try to recreate the accounts, it makes the folder but adds the computer name next to it. (Ex: John.travelcomputer)I do BELIEVE that it is somewhere in the Registry or SAM FILE or both that the problem exists. The SAM file does not contain the login for the other accounts so I believe this to also be part of the problem.If you made your server into a DC it gets rid of local accounts. do you know how to bring them back, or is that not possible.so i just have to bring it back to where i purchased it? Also, before you can do anything to fix the domain logon problems with the workstations, you will need to have domain admin privileges, and based on your other post, you don't have that. You're pretty much screwed until you have that.i do have domain admin privleges..please let me know ASAPAs Geek-4pm said, we need more details before we can give you a good answer.... If we can't get more details, you can follow my first bit of advice, as it is about as descriptive as your problem.what details u required please let me know ASAP..what is your domain architecture? what version of windows server are you using for your domain controllers? when did the problem start? what were you doing when you first noticed the problem? what have you tried already?

If there's a problem with domain authentication, you can usually just remove the affected computer from the domain and rejoin it, to fix the problem, which I suggested in my first reply. Did you try that yet?

We have installed file server and Domain on windows 2003 R2 SP2. All user have joined and all MAP ready for store DATA and E-mail.
may 1 month a go We don't know why. there are sometime clients when they START open outlook(2003,2007), the outlook can't fine or access DENIED on the file stored in map drive. but folder map drive can access to file normal when explore on it. But when we try use remote desktop to remote to file server or DC until it was connect and then outlook work and can access normal.
I really don know what something occur with my server and remote desktop with mail client that access file on file server.

in general its not recommended to install file server service with domain controller on the same server!
for best practice you need to get new server for the file server

for now u need to check is there windows update installed recently and disable the bitdefender then test your outlook

after I get to work with it and window loads theres a box that says " Failed to connect to a windows service      Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service services. This problem prevents limited users from logging on to the system. As an administrative user, you can review the System Event Log for detailss about  why the service didn't respond.

for the inbound emails u can modify each USER from whom can receive emails using the active directory users and computers> specific user> "right click->properties> exchange general> delivery restriction from below group (messege restriction CHOOSE only from and Boss account to the list..

the outbound you can block it from the send connector, by creating send connector and modify the delivery restriction to REJECT by default except boss account
in this step you to use GROUPS to apply for all users

I need to install drivers that will emulate a sound card on a virtual Windows Server 2008 R2. Can anyone point me in the right direction for something I could use? I have tried VACARD09 which worked with my XP machine, but WONT work on this OS.

I use Virtual PC 2007 for all my tinkering with simulated systems. You can create multiple virtual systems networked together on a virtual network ( hardware resources permitting ) on a single system. With a system with say 4GB of RAM running Windows XP Pro, you could have say  4 copies of Windows Server 2003 running side by side with the native Win XP Pro OS in a configuration of 512MB-768MB Ram per virtual Windows Server 2003 that is running. Your CPU should be at LEAST a Dual-core or it will be pegged around 100% to keep the juggle of 1 native (real) OS + 4 virtual OS's running concurrently.

Virtual PC 2007 is free and comes in 32-bit and 64-bit option. There is also VMware, but I am not SURE of VMware is still free or not, as for I prefer the VPC2007 for ease of use. If you were to want to run Linux Servers Virtual, you would probably want to check into VMware as for Microsoft's VPC 2007 doesnt play well with Linux and its virtual hardware drivers it sets up. It can be done, but I havent had an easy install of a Linux distro on VPC.DaveLembke thank you so much its sounds promissing i I'll give it a try on VPC2007 and will get back with any issue and the experience.I have downloaded and installed VPC2007, only to find out that my Laptop HP Pavillion dv6000 does not have Hardware-Assisted Virtulization. Another thing I am trying to install win srv2003 r2 using a CD or ISO the virtual software does not detects any of that, and I get the following error Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media In selected boot device.The hardware assisted virtualization should only really be for 64bit systems. Meaning if your host os is 64bit you won't be able to run a 64bit guest. But you can run 32bit guest.

As for it not detecting the ISO & CD there is an option in the menu of vpc to select ISO / CD to boot from. You'll have to search for this option & set it to boot from what you want. Then do a restart of the vm & it should pick up.

After Struggling with VPC2007 I decided to download and try a 30 days free version of VMware Workstation 7 and this seems to be doing exactly what I was looking for, I will use it for training purpose during these 30 days when the free license expire I’ll get back to Windows VPC2007. So far VMware is doing its job.

On the other hand I appreciate if someone posted some tips to successfully run a Domain with at least 3 servers and 5 clients. I tend to run, (DC, Exchange 2003 and File Server) all server OS is W2K3 and XP on Clients, I want to perform all this on My Laptop's Virtual Machine assuming its in a real corporate world

I'm curious about why you would want to run a simulation with old technology. Why XP and 2003? Since it's just a simulation, download the trials for Windows 7 and 2008 R2.
About running vpc2007 on your laptop.... you don't need hardware virtualization to run vpc 2007 or virtual server 2005, you just need it to run the latest version: windows virtual pc. Did you try it and it didn't work?
Another good ALTERNATIVE, if you ever get hardware that supports virtualization, is Hyper-V Server 2008R2. It's free and you can manage it with an MMC snap-in in Vista or Win7.Michaewlewis thanks for the input, the main reason of using old platform is that, i haven't got hold of the new windows platform, i tried downloading windows server 2008 but my Internet Connection is limited, so for now i am stack with the old platform. As to VPC2007 i was using a wrong boot media, no wonder i was getting boot error messages, but now i am still exploring VMware as i am preparing myself to get a High Speed Internet Connection to start downloading all these trails.

If I run this file, my ZIP folder does the unzip action.
But I have to unzip a folder with the zip as a file in that folder.

So I can drag and drop a zipfile to the .bat file without problems but i can't drag and drop a folder with thee zip file in it directly to the .bat file. Can ANYONE help me to MODIFY the script ?

I am working with a computer recycler and a machine is causing me mild grief. It is an IBM x-series 206, running server 2003. As part of our process we WIPE the drives, reinstall and try to sell them. Keeps all those nasty metals out of the landfill.

Anyway, I went into the bios and changed the first boot device to the cd, second was the floppy and third the HARD drive. Put the wiping cd in the drive, exited the bios and it booted into Windows.

Checked again and the first was still the cd. Changed the cd for a newer dvdrw, check the bios again, put the cd in the drive, exited the bios and it booted into Windows. Burned a new cd with the same results.

I could simply switch the hard drives, but that seems a little defeatist to me. I really want to find the setting that is PREVENTING my booting from the cd.

What am I missing?Replace the CMOS battery...it may not be retaining the changes upon reboot....

Checked again and the first was still the cd. Changed the cd for a newer dvdrw, check the bios again, put the cd in the drive, exited the bios and it booted into Windows. Burned a new cd with the same results.

What bootdisk are you using and how did you create it ? ?

You can't simply "copy" a bootable CD...doesn't work.

Product key for for MS products is not on the CD. It is inside an INSTALLED copy of the software. It was on the original package or or box. The user puts it in at install time.
You can retire it from a backup that had been made of the entire system.

Try looking for unattended text file on the cd when open look 2/3rd down you will find your cd key
Best way to look for unattended.txt is press letter U on your keyboard til you find this file.

My client has got this domain ‘line.com.au’ hosted with the below hosting provider

Nameserver1 : silver123.server.com


Nameserver2 : silver123.server.com


And exchange server 2003 for the mails


Everything was working fine.




Today he got a new website called lakmos.com and hosted with a new hosting provider which is :


Siteground.com


And the Nameservers were changed from silver123.server.com to ns1.sitegound.com And from silver123.server.com to ns2.siteground.com


Since sitegotund.com does not register a domain name that ends with .au, therefore -not sure(guessing)- the guy who designed the new website registered the domain name ‘lakmos.com’ as a new domain and has pointed the old domain ‘line.com.au’ to ‘lakmos.com’ VIA Nameserver1 and Nameserver2 as explained above.


In the web browser if you type in :


http://line.com.au or


http://lakmos.com


Outcome same website



Now my client has an issue the mail does not work.


On the Exchange server 2003 ‘Forward Lookup Zone’ I had changed 4 ‘records’ (ftp Host(A), list Host(A), list Mail Exchanger (MX),www Host(A)) from pointing to the old ip address that was BELONG to silver123.server.com (202.45.65.70,,,,,not real) to the new ip address that is associated with ns1.sitegound.com (172.14.56.70,,,,,not real)


But still emails does not work.


What do you think I have missed ?

I've never used Windows Home Server so I'm not the formost expert on the OS, however based on some of the comments from other posts, and some of the links posted here, here it sounds like there are some limitations and compatibly issues.

Right. So the sales of the Home Server will not undermine the main revenue. The Home Server will be bought by individuals who build there own PC. So this will be gravy for MS, inasmuch as it is not really a whole new product for the MS development people. It consists of parts of stuff they already have.

Predictably, MS profits will go up, not down, by lowering the price of a niche product that failed to enter the mainstream channel.

I have a Dell server with win 2k3 loaded onto it. Over the last couple of days, it has started beeping constantly. The BEEPS start when the os get's to it's LOGIN screen and continues until it's shut down. It is still stable. I have booted it into knoppix and no beeps and very stable. I have run the mobo's diag's and all passed (With no beeps) then booted into the os, as soon as I got to the login screen, the beeps started. It's very frustrating. The beeps are coming from the mobo's ONBOARD speaker. I have cleaned all fans and heatsinc's which were all good anyway and there is 18g's of free hd space on the c: part. Any ideas?Hey Craig,

2) It is better to load on protocol, TCP/IP only.

3) If you have mixed network
, setup WINS server or install NetBIOS over
TCP/IP on W2K/XP instead of loading NetBEUI.

4) Also make sure that Domain Controllers register their DOMAIN<1C> NetBIOS
names with the WINS Server.

5) The fix is to use hybrid node instead of p-node or m-node.

6) If the network is configured to use for NetBIOS name resolution but the
client hasn't been set manually, it could be set through a DHCP release
option 46.

I am trying to append the current date to the end of the file name and I am using bat file script to do it. For example, I have the file 1.txt and when I use the script, the file name should be renamed as 1_29_09_2011.txt.

The script works good in Windows 7 and Windows 2003 Enterprise x64 Edition SP2.

However, for Windows 2003 Standard Edition SP2, the output I am receiving is 1_09-2011-.txt

The below are the contents of the bat file script:

On the system that is acting up, have you VERIFIED the output structure of %date% such as running echo. %date% from command shell to make sure its the correct structure format, same order as the other SYSTEMS that work correctly. To me it looks like your system that is acting up for this batch is not the same %date% output structure?

Your example of what you should get shows DDMMYYYY and your undesired output is showing MMYYYY missing the DD ( Day value)

Set up your list in a file. Ex:

The way to grab the substring is in the second line. What it is saying is SET the SUB VARIABLE to the SUB variable offset by 0 characters for 3 characters. Essentially, take the first 3 characters of the sub variable (which was previously set to be the customer string) and make them the new sub variable. This only works if you know that you are always GOING to use the characters at specific positions within the string. If what you are looking for varies in it's location, it will take some different coding to get it. Please let us know if this is the case.

NTFS permission can be a headache times and that's exactly what i am going through right now.
Here is the situation i am facing: We running windows server 2003 in our domain with a file server where we have a shared folder CALLED All Employees and each user or employee has his own folder inside this All Employees folders. What we want is that every user can gain access to the All Employee´s folder but should not access another user´s folder.

So what i did was to assign List Folder Content permission to the Domain users group for the root folder in this case the All Employees, since all the Domain users are part of the Domain Users Security Group. This worked just fine, but the problem is that the permission i assigned to the parent folder (All Employees) is propagating through to all child folders enabling all users traversing to another user´s folder, even though they cannot open the files but they can see what is in other employees folders. Our aim is to restrict users from accessing a fellow employee´s folder after they gained access to the root folder (All Employees) the respective user should only be able to access his folder. By the way we have over 250 users. 

     I would follow these steps:

First, REMOVE the permission from that top-level folder.
Second, select all individual users' folders; CHOOSE properties-->Security-->ADVANCED.
Third, uncheck the "inherit" option and apply.
Fourth, switch the permission back on for the top-level folder.  This time it won't propagate down through the directory tree.

Are u saying i must first remove the Domain user Security group from the parent folder? when you say select individual user´s folder u mean i must go the advanced property for each user´s folder, if so, ins't there a way to do this collectively INSTEAD of going through 250 folders individually, its quite burdensome.  No - remove List Folder Content permission from the parent folder.  (first step)
Then, within that folder, hit Ctrl-A to select all sub-folders and continue as above.  (second step)  This will make the change to all folders simultaneously.

Does that help?

Pls i need help! i have just cleaned the disk on my computer and installed Windows XP home edition on it, symantec anit-virus and stuff..i can logon to the computer, everything works fine, i am using a D-link adapter and router which is called airplusg+...and a ZynXel modem...we have a wireless connection, and my computer tells me that i am currently connected to our network. it tells me in the taskbar... and i got a good connection, but when i try to KLICK on internet it doesn't work... ive tried /IPCONFIG and /Iprefresh....but it tells me that i cannot connect to the DHCP-server....any clues? also when i try repairing my wireless internet connection it cannot REFRESH IP adress..It's ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew...
