Answer» avg ANTISPYWARE is designed to fight trojans and avg free is designed to ffight virusesQuote from: CompGuy17 on June 01, 2007, 12:10:52 PM So..... What's the difference between AVG and AVG free? ...You don't pay for the free one, and you don't get the extra bits with the free one. Check out the AVG site. ...Google it, I'm lazy.Quote from: CompGuy17 on June 01, 2007, 12:10:52 PM So..... What's the difference between AVG and AVG free? It's like the difference between beer that you pay for and free beer Seriously Quote · AVG Free Edition is available free-of-charge to home users! AVG Free Edition is for private, non-commercial, single home computer use only. Use of AVG Free Edition within any organization or for commercial purposes is strictly prohibited. I tryed AVS and I liked it a lot better. It is completely free.Ok...I'm sorry it took so long to reply, I haven't been home for a few days. I added the Superantispyware and the AVG free edition. It cleaned out a lot of spyware (no viruses) but I have a trojan and I'm not sure how to get rid of it. Also, I suppose my computer is running better...but the things that disappeared are STILL gone. Is that permanent? Thanks for that help you guys.......(by the way)AVG Anti-Spyware is designed to remove trojans...it's a different program than AVG Free. How did you determine you have a trojan ? ?I did a scan and it said I had "one threat" which was a trojan. I guess I should get AVG Anti-Spyware EDIT: Ok nevermind, I remember now. I tried to get AVG Anti-Spyware and it said I needed Windows 2000 or higher, so it wouldn't LET me download it. So I ended up with superantispyware.superantispyware should have removed it... what was the name of the trojan?? |

Solve : IE6 conflicts with whitepages.com? |

While I FOUND a hotfix for 411.com, I cannot find a fix so that viewers can work in whitepages.com without encountering an error in IE and having IE shutdown. Solve : CPU usage tracker? |
Answer» OK i'll bite... I was originally trying to imply how retarded it is for MS to have so many different versions of the same OS. Why not just give us one OS that does what everyone needs and let the user disable the extra stuff if they find they don't like it.Actually I find it a good Idea to create more versions sow the costumers doesn't have to pay to much for the little things they need and visa verse. For Vista you can chose between: Home Basic (I do have doubts about that one.)(Doesn't have the 3D flip function) Home Premium (The first one that's actually good enough for an upgrade but I do have problems to share things with that OS) Business (Name explains itself) Enterprise (Don't know anything about that one) Ultimate (The complete version of Vista but very expensive) And I think I'm forgetting 1 but I don't know witch oneQuote from: patio on May 10, 2007, 08:10:50 AM Quote from: Sid on May 09, 2007, 04:22:35 PMWhat OS are you using? Sorry, I obviously need to learn this forums tags for sarcasm... ANYONE know what they are? My original point was to be more specific, as in Home or Pro, not just XP, as Pro has a built in performance monitor. I remember reading about it briefly, but with not having Pro, I haven't had chance to have a "play" with it, so I might have been able to pass him onto something/one more knowledgeable. |

Solve : When I scroll down (in IE,FIRE FOX,WIN EXPLORER)everything drifts right? |
Answer» Im using Server 2003 on my laptop(Thinkpap t28).I can be on the internet or in Windows Explorer or Yahoo Messenger and when I go to scroll down, everything drifts to the right. Its hard to explain. Its the wierdest thing I've ever seen.I thought it was my browser and was related to the internet but its happening when Im not EVEN on the net.Im using a Wireless CARD if that has anything to do with it.But again..the issue is after I use it for a while it'll DRIFT to the right when I scroll down and drift to the LEFT when I scroll back up and when it does this you cant read anything so I shut down..unplug the wireless card, wait a while and start over...then it'll start again. Its been happening for about a month now.Installed all updates from MS.Still does it.Should I just go ahead and go thru the 1.5 hour reinstall?I would try re-installing the video drivers before doing a complete OS re-install...Thank you.I will do that this evening.I bought this machine such a long time ago and moved from state to state so I know I dont have any of the software but if Im not mistaken I can find them on support.microsoft.com?Or should I be LOOKING for them on the IBM website? The IBM site. |

Solve : MS Word printing problem? |
Answer» Does your printer software have an alignment procedure? With my Canon printers, they normally prompt me to run through an alignment procedure after replacing an ink cartridge. With my Canon BJC-3000, I can also start that alignment procedure by going to Control PANEL, Printers and Faxes, selecting the printer, right click on the printer, select Properties, and then select the Maintenance tab. I have an older BJC-2000, I do not have a alignment option for it via Control Panel. So, the OPTIONS will vary, depending on your model printer and your printer software. |

I think I know what that link you gave me was for now Fed heh. But anyways, I did disable the Parallel port in my BIOS because I don't use it. I don't know why it's causing ERRORS or why it tried to start up. I don't have anything connected to the Parallel ports either. It froze when I was gaming.. :-/ |

Solve : Is there any way to change the OS language?? |
Answer» Hi everybody here! But now, the new is the manufacturer gives you a preinstallated PC, with all the OS and drivers. You only must put in a few parameteres like language, time, time zone, and so on.So, how did this error happen? Did you friend enter the wrong parameter when selecting language? I was going to suggest that your friend try to get the seller to install a Spanish version of the OS. But, apparently you've done, although I'm not quite sure what you mean by "and it´s for give them two shoots. They nor so at least understand what is the problem..." Hi Neil: I think the same as you. That is impossible to change the OS language if not buying other OS copy in spanish. But, believe me, I´m beguining to think those ultimate OS from MS Windows, Media Center and Vista, are all in "english USA" and have the same problem for non english speakers users. Soybean: "I was going to suggest that your friend try to get the seller to install a Spanish version of the OS. But, apparently you've done, although I'm not quite sure what you mean by "and it´s for give them two shoots. They nor so at least understand what is the problem..." This is not a seller´s problem, he has sell the new portable PC, has received the money, and good bye and good luck... The problem is the manufacturer, that puts in the european MARKET a portable PC without OS & Drivers installation disks. He sells you a software preinstalled PC (OS and Drivers), and this is not all... no... the hard disk of 120 GB, is partitioned by the manufacturer in four parts, one of this without format, the other three are in FAT 32, and one of this three is unnacessible by the OS because contain a "recovery system of software". This is a big sheet!!! The manufacturer hears our telephonic claims like one who hears the rain... and does like he doesn´t understand nothing. Even, we have write to manufacturers support e-mail with our claims and he doesn´t answer. And I think, soon we will be seeing this same problem not only this I tell you, but in other people that going to shop a new PC in the future. HARLEQUIN. Soybean: "I'm not quite sure what you mean by "and it´s for give them two shoots. " Yes, you are right... "and it´s for give them two shots". HARLEQUINQuote Hi Neil: I think the same as you. That is impossible to change the OS language if not buying other OS copy in spanish. But, believe me, I´m beguining to think those ultimate OS from MS Windows, Media Center and Vista, are all in "english USA" and have the same problem for non english speakers users.I don't know what you mean by "those ultimate OS from MS Windows, Media Center and Vista" but, if you're saying these versions of Windows are not available in languages other than English, you're wrong. See List of languages supported in Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 And, with any language version of Windows, other languages can be added for purposes of keyboard input, as explained in the link above. Yes soybean: But this information about languages supported is for: Windows XP Windows XP Professional Windows XP Home Edition Windows 2000 Professional Edition Windows Small Business Server 2003 Windows 2000 Windows Server 2003 Whose OS language can be in spanish, and in others... But, I´m speaking about Windows XP Media Center Edition, from 2005 YEAR and not about these other formers OS,s. I have find this: ¿Está Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 disponible en otros idiomas? Actualmente, hay disponibles versiones localizadas para Australia, Austria, China, Francia, Alemania, Italia, Japón, Corea, Holanda, Suiza y Reino Unido. I translate: Is Windows XP media Center Edition 2005 available in other languages? Actually, there are availables versions for Australia (English), Austria (German), China, France, German (German), Italy, Japan, Korea, Holand, Swiss, and United Kingdom (English). http://support.microsoft.com/kb/292246/ Better than before: Is Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 available in any other languages? Localized versions are now available for Australia, Austria, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. From: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/evaluation/faq.mspx I´m sorry for my friend, he´s so much built up one´s hopes with this XP Media Center... When I tell him there is nothing to do.... Well... he can do something... learn a little of english ... Thanks a lot to all these forum members that have helped me to ARRIVE a conclusion about the problem. In spite of, I must say, surfing by the big NET, I think is possible one spanish have a patch to modify the english OS language to spanish. Well, I think this is a lot of difficult but nothing is impossible. If this is true, I´ll tell you. HARLEQUIN.You couldn't have said it better. Hi everybody! Even if you don´t believe it, I have changed the language in the Windows XP Media Center Edition to spanish. How it´s possible?... with limitations. First step: Loading the new OS WXP MCE. Second step: Loading DONETFX.EXE (MS FRAMEWORK). Third step: Loading NDPSP.EXE (MS FRAMEWORK SP 1). Fourth step: Updating --> WindowsXPmediacenter2005-KB900325-USA.EXE Fifth step: RESTARTING the OS. Sixth step: Loading Localization pack for MS WXP MCE, who installs spanish multilingual files for Windows components. Well, all is ready now?---> NO... the OS main language is "English USA", the Help and technical support is in english, and other OS messages... What is the new then? You before had Files, Edition, Tools... and now have Archivo, Edición, Herramientas. This is the best we the spanish can do with MS WXP MCE, a OS half in english half in spanish. And thanks to the other spanish who teach me how making this change in the OS. And thanks to all of you for reading me. HARLEQUIN. Thanks for posting that info. Glad to hear you found at least a partial solution. |

Solve : Trouble reformatting computer.? |
Answer» Boy, I'm just chock full of little problems today. Heh. My sister has a Dell Dimension 2400 with Windows XP Home Edition SP1a that she doesn't use anymore. Hoping to use it to test a few things, I dragged it out of its hiding place and set it up in my room. I don't know what in the world happened to it, but it looks like someone (her ex-boyfriend according to her) tried to reformat it and never finished the process. So, I tried completing it and I now see why this was left undone... A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. I tried disabling the BIOS memory options, but I either don't know what I'm doing or they're not available, because I can't find those. And I think the system files must have already been deleted because I can't run in Safe Mode. I just get a window saying that Setup can't run in Safe Mode and that it will be restarted. Any suggestions? I would really appreciate some input. EDIT: I tried using OS CD's from a couple of different computers just to see if anything happens, but it doesn't make any difference. The computer simply ignores them and goes to the same installation screen. It looks like Windows is installing a bad device driver: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314492 The knowledge base article recommends doing a memory dump and using Dumpchk.exe: Quote To resolve a Stop 0xC2 error message, use the Kernel Debugging tool, and create a user dump file. Thanks for the links. I read everything, but it wasn't very helpful. Not that it's a bad idea or anything...I'm just still not really sure how to go about doing this whole thing. I've never done a memory dump, so maybe that's why I'm so in the dark. From what I gather, I would need access to Startup And Recovery, correct? If so, that'd be out of the question since nothing on the computer was accessible. However, I seem to have somehow managed to reformat the computer. I hit F12 to open the Boot Device Menu and then inserted the OS CD and selected IDE CD-ROM Device. This then allowed me to delete the current OS (only partially installed), format the petition, and install Windows XP. So yay, I was finally able to get this thing working. I'm having a couple of small problems, though. I think I should be able to handle everything, but one thing I'm not sure about is the display. The resolution is currently stuck at 640x800, and I want to set it at 800x600 or 1024x768, but the computer won't let me. There isn't even an option. I didn't use this computer much before it was reformatted, but I know that it had a higher resolution. If I go into the Advanced Settings and mess around with the Adapter modes, I can set it to a higher resolution, but it greatly sacrifices the color quality (it will only run at 4 or 8 bits). Is there anything I can do? Is it possible that it's just because of the monitor? I only have the PC unit, so I'm using the monitor from an old eMachines W2247.Quote Is it possible that it's just because of the monitor? I only have the PC unit, so I'm using the monitor from an old eMachines W2247. Scratch that. I just found the Dell monitor and that hasn't helped anything. I guess it's time to start looking for video drivers... EDIT: Lucky me, I just found the ResourceCD with all of the required drivers. That FIXED my problem. Now I just need to install a few programs and figure out how to get the windows to stop opening maximized and I'll be set.Way to go, CBM! 8-) Yeah, i thought it was a bad driver. Take it easy. |

Solve : Why don' you at least dual boot with Linux?? |
Answer» OK, folks. I am interested in why you have or have not used Linux, at least in a dual boot configuration. To me, it just makes sense, if for no other reason than it makes you safe on the internet wihout buying, downloading updates and scanning for viruses/adware/spyware on a regular basis. You can even keep Windows if you want for those "must have" applications or games that require Windows. If Linux would produce ONE operating system instead of a plethora of systems I might then try it. The thing to remember is that Linux is not a company. It is a kernel to an operating system. Distribuions are made based on that kernel and apps that the developers felt were relevant for their product. These may be large companies, Novell/SuSe or small one man productions, There is no overseer of a Linux project because that is the nature of free software. Some distributions are better for servers, some for low end systems, some for the latest and greatest, etc. The fact that you recognize the value of Knoppix and use it shows it is relevant to you. Knoppix can also be instqalled to a hard drive, you know. Quote If Linux wants to get used properly it will have to come up with a system like Apple Mac and produce its own computer, in my considered opinion. That is how Linux has been different. Since Apple sells the hardware and the software they control all variables, so compatibility is not an issue. You can't just SCRAPE together parts and run Apple software on it, like you can with Windows or Linux. The price of this compatibility is higher cost due to the monopoly. Windows will run on a hodge podge of parts (usuallly) but the newer versions require more and different hardware. The licensing is what drives the cost of Windows, another virtual monopoly, and is now evident with the WIndows activation to ensure 1 copy of Windows for each machine (or it doesn't work). Ina ddition, most companies DFO not write drivers for Linux for their products so these have to be reverse engineered after the fact. (Ever hear of a WinModem that works in DOS?) Some Linux companies, ex: Linspire have been pushing hard to get their O/S bundled with new hardware as this is how Windows got to their current status - bundling (plus they also used illegal tactics to squash the competition, but that's another story.) That is the number one reason for XP sales, they just HAPPENED to come with your new computer you bought at Best Buy. Oh and you paid for it, make no mistake about that. It just wasn't on the sales ticket. I think there is a need for many variants of Linux, but in the end we are left with a few larger companies that will make it to the mainstream - SuSe, Linspire, Xandros, Mandriva, and RedHat obviously. Some have gone, some have merged and that will continue. The fact that there is no huge conglomerate producing your O/S is why the price is either free or ridiculously low, especially compared to Windows, but the result of no overseeing of the "final product" can either be seen as a blessing or a drawback. I thought an anarchist like you would prefer that. Good discussion, though.Quote My computers are to old I would never know the true preformance of linux. Linux didnt use to use up alot of system resources I hear but now when I use it they have all these new fancy layout etc... Ouch for my 2MB video card. Also I have hard drive space that is to little nothing over 12gb. Maybe I can put it on my brand new laptop? Nah it doesnt have a floppy drive to reformat... Will it even work with linux? I dont know. I knoe in the future I when I get a newer computer I will try linux and be glad I will never pay $200.000 for Microsoft Windows.. I mean $200 for a OS that is Outrageous. Dont they make enough money out of games and consoules allready.. then again you can never have to much money. Win98, How much RAM and I recall you had a Celeron processor. You could also try using this old machine as is for a less power hungry distribution, like Slackware. Are you on dialup or cable/DSL? Peccavi, What isi your current hardware? Your proposed system would be more than enough. Are you on dialup or Cable/DSL?Quote
I am on dial up. And will be for a long time it seems Very expensive here DSL. I am attaching current system summary. Quote I was attacked by a penguin, when only a child. LOOOOOOOOL , attacked by the butterfly of MSN (microsoft) too? Fairly cool. |

Solve : I'm having an annoying problem with Outlook? |
Answer» When I delete an email the subject line and sender name is still showing in my inbox with a line through it. It's like it's not DELETING the messages, it's just making them light grey (INSTEAD of black) and putting a line through them. This happens when I try to delete emails or when I try to move them from my inbox into a folder. Does anyone know how to fix this? This happens with IMAP mail. To purge deleted messages, do Edit-->Purge.Thanks! That worked. But how can I prevent this from happening in the first place? It's very annoying and it wasn't happening before, it just started.chicagojami..... By any chance ....did this issue start today after opening a E mail with a attachment ? dl65 Quote chicagojami..... By any chance ....did this issue start today after opening a E mail with a attachment ?lol, no. I avoided attachments today bc of the wormchicagojami..... OK ....that was my concern ......... dl65 Quote chicagojami..... OK ....that was my concern .........thanks dl65, thankfully my files are safe but outlook 2002 is driving me absolutely mad!Well this always happens on IMAP accounts, whether you can see it or not. If you don't want to see the messages marked for deletion, there's a suitable option on the View menu. On Outlook 2003, it's counter-intuitively hidden under View-->Arrange by-->Current View. (What genius at MS thought of that naivgation path? Bozos!) Bear in mind that the messages will remain on your ISP's server until they are explicitly deleted ("purged") UNLESS your email client auto-deletes. This is all because of the way IMAP works. It's by design. Personally when I'm using Outlook and deleteing IMAP mail, I first hit DELETE, and then PRESS Alt-E, Alt-S - that's the keyboard shortcut to purge. It's become a habit.Quote Well this always happens on IMAP accounts, whether you can see it or not. Ahhh, thank you! I have 2002, is the moronic path the same? Also, is there a reason it wasn't happening (or I wasn't seeing it) before and it just started showing up?Don't know if the menu option is in exactly the same place, but it will definitely still be on the "view" menu. As to how it changed - possibly there's a keyboard shortcut to switch to this view and you accidentally hit it.Quote Don't know if the menu option is in exactly the same place, but it will definitely still be on the "view" menu. As to how it changed - possibly there's a keyboard shortcut to switch to this view and you accidentally hit it. YES! That did it, thank you sooooo much! |

Solve : Windows Server 2003 - Login script for printers? |
Answer» Can I add a script to log, perhaps a policy or SOMETHING, that maps all the users who log in to the PRINTERS in the office. INSTEAD of MANUALLY going to each COMPUTER and mapping the computers, it would be nice to have a policy that does this automatically. Can this be done, if so where in the policy is this controlled. |

Solve : Add License Wizard is missing? |
Answer» I need to add CALs to my Windows Small Business Server 2003 domain controller. I access "Licensing" in the Administrative Tools folder and it tells me to go to the Add License Wizard. I have read that the wizard is in the Server Management CONSOLE. I can find neither the Wizard nor the Console. I am beginning to have the horrible thought that I somehow INSTALLED the Server operating system incorrectly, even though I was very careful. Everything else is working correctly. The "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server" folder is also absent. SP1 is already installed. Does anyone know to get to the Add License Wizard? The ISSUE has been resolved. I SPOKE with Dell Tech Support and they had me simply insert the Windows 2003 SBS installation CD. I clicked on the "Install Now" option and the "Continue Setup" icon soon appeared on the DESKTOP. I just finished the installation that I began last June, and the Server Management console was then present along with the Add License Wizard. I added the licenses and everything seems to be working fine. The Dell Tech first told me that I would have to re-create my staff's user accounts and also rejoin all of our computers to the domain, but thankfully that was not necessary. |

Solve : Problems with Outlook sending/receiving? |
Answer» I recently downloaded all of my emails from my webmail to save in Outlook 2003. also, when i downloaded all of my primary account's emails via POP3, and I must have had the option to "delete messages from the server" selected. so it downloaded everything in my inbox, and now there is nothing on the server - so all my folders are gone, although i didn't get a chance to download them by IMAP. this is probably a long shot, but is there ANY chance these could ever be recovered??? They are gone if you said "delete from the server" RE... the first issue , Is this the first time this has occurred ? Have you contacted your server ? Have you confirmed that your Email account set ups are correct ? Your Internet may be working , but that has nothing to do with your Email service ...other than you must be connected . dl65 |

Solve : Leave messages on Server? |
Answer» I have loaded Outlook 2003 onto an XP machine on a work network and didn't activate the setting 'leave a copy of messages on the server' now when I check under Tools, email accounts, view/change, more settings, advanced tab I can't see the setting to activate this, all emails are getting downloaded locally and I don't have a backup on the server (so having to make manual backups or copies of the messages/pst file) - in typical IT fashion this has happened on a user who EVERYTHING goes wrong for so any fast help will be most APPRECIATED. |

Solve : COM Server application permissions...? |
Answer» Hi. The machine-default permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID I went to the help link and it states: Quote User Action There is no localserver32 value under the CLSID in the registry, as suggested, so I go to Localservice INSTEAD. The value I get when getting the data value is HWDeviceCustomProperties. I then goto DCOM config, and there is no HWDeviceCustomProperties in there, nor is there any instance of the CLSID code. I really don't know where else to go to fix the problem. My PC doesn't restart, my network connection just dies, and to access the internet I have to reboot to be able to connect again. Sometimes its 10 MINUTES, sometimes it lasts a couple of hours. A few days ago I could stay connected as long as required, but not now. Happened on my previous windows install, happens on a fresh windows install... My PC specs, from what I can remember: Processor Model : 1x AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ Speed : 2.01GHz Model Number : 3800 (estimated) Mainboard System BIOS : Phoenix Technologies, LTD 6.00 PG System : MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD MS-7125 (Can't remember the exact name, packed my box away) Mainboard : MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD MS-7125 Total Memory : 2GB DDR-SDRAM Chipset 1 Model : Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Athlon 64 / Opteron HyperTransport Technology Configuration Front Side Bus Speed : 2x 1005MHz (2010MHz data rate) Total Memory : 2GB DDR-SDRAM Memory Bus Speed : 2x 201MHz (402MHz data rate) Video System Monitor/Panel : Plug and Play Monitor Adapter : Radeon X1900 Series Adapter : Radeon X1900 Series Secondary Operating System(s) Windows System : Microsoft Windows XP/2003 Professional x64 Edition 5.02.3790 (Service Pack 1) Network Services Adapter : Marvell Yukon 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Belkin ADSL Modem with Wireless_G Router)Check this out: http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=10016&eventno=4718&source=DCOM&phase=1 BTW, I notice you only have SP1 on your system. Have you tried updating to SP2? Alan <>< Thanks for the link. Tried it yesterday but you have to pay to view the solution. Was kinda hoping for a free solution. On X64 it only SP1 is available, so I'm stuck with that, but it is fully up to date from Windows Update. Quote The problem is caused by a mismatch of files that occurs when you install Microsoft Internet Information Services. This problem occurs if you install IIS from an installation point that is not running Windows Server 2003 SP1. See M908181 for details on this issue.Quote See M895200 for a hotfix applicable to Microsoft Windows XP.Quote M555099 has information on this event. Those links seem more like what I am after, but you gotta pay to view them.PS. I noticed I was getting an IPSec entries before each of these ERRORS: Quote The IPSec driver has entered Secure mode. IPSec policies, if they have been configured, are now being APPLIED to this computer.Event ID 4294. Anyway, I followed the help link and there was no info on the problem. It did give me another link to try which produced: Quote 1. Delete the local policy registry subkey. To do this, follow these steps: a. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.So I have done that, and will now leave the PC on whilst going to work and see if problem persists. (PS. Just posting all the info in case anyone else has similar problems, then they can find it easily VIA search. I'm not spamming, honest )Nope, made no difference |

Solve : Allowing Standard user on the AD to edit registry? |
Answer» Hi. What is the easyest way to allow a group to write unrestricted to the registry. You're joking, right? If you're going to allow any kind of write access, it must be to a very limited portion of the registry. Fire up registry editor (as a domain & local PC admin); find the subkey you're happy to allow access to; right-click; choose "permissions".Kool. Ill give those ideas a shot today. Thanks for that. Also its 2000 server. (standard not advanced) |
