Solve : Application Server Structure?

Answer»

I am stuck for ideas and can't FIND much in Google about how to organize an application server.

Currently programs with very limited access that are run from the server are installed to a directory in a mapped drive F:. The F: drive also contains restricted files for the same group of users.

Programs that can be run by everyone from the server are installed in a mapped drive G: The G: drive also contains all of the rest of the company files.

I expected to leave F: and G: for files and create a P: drive for programs. The problem I am having is:

1. Is it commonplace for everyone in a company to be able to SEE the install directory of a program?
2. I need to keep most every user from parusing the restricted programs' installation directories.

Maybe I just worked this out. If it's not a bad thing to have the entire company mapped to the P: drive then I could Share this drive with Everyone and then lock down the various directories accordingly. Also, now that I think about it, using advanced PERMISSIONS I should be able to FIX it so authorized users have full access to the directories but are not capable of moving or deleting them, right?

If my realization is right I guess my big concern is with how most companies structure their application servers - are the program directories visible? If not, how are they kept from the user's sight but still available to use?

Thanks for the help,

Solve : Antivirus for Win 2k3 SBS SP2?

Answer»

I have been directed to use CA Antivirus on Windows 2003 Small Business Server Service Pack 2. When LOOKING at the information website http://store.ca.com/dr/v2/ec_Main.Entry17c?SID=40705&SP=10023&CID=0&PID=648284&PN=1&V1=648284&CUR=840&DSP=&PGRP=0&ABCODE=&CACHE_ID=0 it STATES "Server 2003 (32/64-bit)" as a supported platform.

I am by no means a SBS or Win 2k3 expert. But they seem like they are SIMILAR enough. If a piece of software (virus scanner or not) states that it will work on Server 2003, will it then also function on SBS 2003? Or are the OS'es different enough that it wouldn't function CORRECTLY?

-thanks!Hello Redeye,

I am fairly confident that CA will work with SBS. I only say 'fairly' because I have a both 2k and SMS on computers, different of course . I havn't had a problem transfering programs between the OS's so, I don't think it will be a problem. I'll look more into it, if you want.

Have you emailed CA, they would know better than I do
Here's the link to their customer service form...

http://home3.ca.com/Support/CustomerSupportForm.aspx?lang=en-US

-Cheersilikemycomputer,

Thanks for the reply. Their online help is better if you have an account. I talked with a salesperson about their CA Antivirus for Enterprise and the gentleman told me it was fully compatible. So as long as their salesperson is on the ball, I should be good to use it.

Thanks all!

Solve : Demo versions of Windows 2000, XP Pro, Server 2003??

Answer»

Does anyone know if there are such things that I can d/l and use for free?

I've been told that I could do with experiencing W2000, XP Pro, XP Home, and (in the future) Server 2003, but I only have XP Home and W98 atm.

I've heard about trial versions you can use for 30days, and I assume they're free?

My plan is to use virtual PC 2007 from MS themselves, and just run them all (and possibly Ubuntu) as virtual machines just for experience. Obviously I'd like to do things LEGALLY, even though I could quite easily "accidentally find" a copy of those above.

Anyone got any good tips that don't include buying HEAPS of software I, personally, will never properly use? There is no such thing as a Win2K or server Edition 30 day trial...Implying I might pick up a XP Pro demo VERSION?There is a 180-day trial version of Windows 2000/2000 Server/2003 server. I got mine from the M$ site. I don't know if the 2000 Pro & Server are available anymore.

Solve : SCSI errors ??

Answer»

Hello,

I have some problems with a server. It shows errors wich I think may be related to scsi and these errors CAUSE the backup to fail due to a time-out ( according to backup exec ). In the system event viewer I find several adpu160m event id:5 errors. See below for the actual error message(s).

And in the application event viewer I also find a some errors wich may be related to this:

The server is a HP proliant ML350 G3 running Windows 2003 Small Business Server, equipped with a HP Storageworks 460 Ultrium2 and is using Veritas Backup Exec v10.0. The tape drive has its firmware up-to-date ( updated it about 2months ago ). The server doesnt have Service Packs. The problems started about 1 month after the firmware update of the tape unit ( we also had a power outage around the time the problems started, I believe 1 week after the outage ).

I've read here and there that this could be a cable problem. I have checked the connections of the cable and theyre both fine, as they should because the cable hasnt been touched in ages. This error popped up for the first time about 3 to 4 weeks ago ( I believe it was about 1 week after the power outage had occured ).

The weird thing about this error/problem is that it goes away sometimes for LIKE 2 to 5 days( backups also succeed during these days) then pops up again and backups fail again. Also the interval at wich the errors occur seem a bit strange to me. For instance yesterday, the error didnt show until 15:40. I had some adpu160m in the eventlog and at 16:47 they dissappeared again 17:27 they re-appeared.

When I restart the server the error seems to be gone aswell for about 4 to 5 days. Today i've turned off the tape unit for about 1 minute and turned it back on and the error seems to be gone again but I think it will pop up again around the time the backup will run.

Does anyone have some suggestions on how to solve this problem ?

Thanks in advance!Have a look:

Alan <>< HI there,

Thanks for your reply, but I dont have a membership to the site you posted. And im not really sure what kind of scsi controller is installed on the server, its a onboard scsi controller from HP. Device manager says HP SCSI Ultra Wide 320 66mhz scsi controller.

Solve : Temp location for downloads?

Answer»

Hi,

What's the temporary location for downloads of IE.

I was downloading some 100MB file, and while it was just saving on hardisk after full download, i mistakingly pressed cancel.

What will be the temp location of that file.

Couldn't find in the Temp internet files.

ThanksDownloaded files are usually stored in the Temporary Internet
Files folder. If you're using Windows XP, you should be able to find it in Document and Settings\the user account name\Local Settings folder.

You may have to set the folder to show all hidden files.I have already checked there.

BTW, i am using 2003 Server. Then to be perfectly honest...I'm at a loss here.Somebody wanna GAIN I hope I'm wrong, but I think you may have lost that file. You may want to consider using a download manager for bigger downloads. What kind of CONNECTION do you have?I have a broadband, so not too tension of the speed.

But just wanted to know, if it can be recovered in any case.

As i pressed the cancel button at the MOMENT it was copying the file from the temp to the DESTINATION folder. You have lost it .....Is it that simple I would say so, yes. Download managers work by saving the file to your hard drive as it downloads. Whenever a portion of the file is downloaded, it's automatically saved. Windows/IE doesn't do this; it saves the entire file at once when the download has completed. Because you didn't allow the file to save, the whole process was undone. I would suggest getting Free Download Manager and using that to download large files. It's very user-friendly.But it has to save somewhere before giving me a full file.

Here it might be deleted when i pressed cancel.

Is that place Temp Internet files.I think pressing cancel gets rid of it.

By the way, this is a VERY GOOD download manager.

Easy to use and very effective with a lot of different options.Okay,

Thanks everybody. You're welcome, Vibhor. Sorry we couldn't save the file; good thing you have a broadband connection!

avg ANTISPYWARE is designed to fight trojans and avg free is designed to ffight virusesQuote from: CompGuy17 on June 01, 2007, 12:10:52 PM

So..... What's the difference between AVG and AVG free?

...You don't pay for the free one, and you don't get the extra bits with the free one.

Check out the AVG site. ...Google it, I'm lazy.Quote from: CompGuy17 on June 01, 2007, 12:10:52 PM
So..... What's the difference between AVG and AVG free?

It's like the difference between beer that you pay for and free beer

Seriously

Quote
· AVG Free Edition is available free-of-charge to home users! AVG Free Edition is for private, non-commercial, single home computer use only. Use of AVG Free Edition within any organization or for commercial purposes is strictly prohibited.

· AVG Free cannot be installed on server operating systems (such as Windows Server 2003), nor can it be used for the scanning of network drives

· Scheduling options in the AVG Free Edition are very limited (only one scheduled update per day, one scheduled SCAN per day etc.)

· AVG Free Edition does not offer advanced testing options, such as automatic healing, password-protected archives reporting, adjustment of scan process priority and many others.

I tryed AVS and I liked it a lot better. It is completely free.Ok...I'm sorry it took so long to reply, I haven't been home for a few days.

I added the Superantispyware and the AVG free edition. It cleaned out a lot of spyware (no viruses) but I have a trojan and I'm not sure how to get rid of it. Also, I suppose my computer is running better...but the things that disappeared are STILL gone. Is that permanent?

Thanks for that help you guys.......(by the way)AVG Anti-Spyware is designed to remove trojans...it's a different program than AVG Free.

How did you determine you have a trojan ? ?I did a scan and it said I had "one threat" which was a trojan. I guess I should get AVG Anti-Spyware

EDIT: Ok nevermind, I remember now. I tried to get AVG Anti-Spyware and it said I needed Windows 2000 or higher, so it wouldn't LET me download it. So I ended up with superantispyware.superantispyware should have removed it... what was the name of the trojan??

Solve : IE6 conflicts with whitepages.com?

Answer»

Our staff uses 411.com and whitepages.com for skip tracing. While I FOUND a hotfix for 411.com, I cannot find a fix so that viewers can work in whitepages.com without encountering an error in IE and having IE shutdown. The error message is the standard "IE has ENCOUNTERED a problem and needs to shutdown. Sorry for the inconvenience."

Suggestions?more info plz specs on the machines?

have you tried it in another browser like firefox?Or update to IE7?If you are using Windows XP, and if the network is on a domain (not a workgroup) you should be able to control what updates pass info a system.

There is an ADMINISTRATION for the domain computers (its accessible through your web browser, but, unfortunately, I dont know the address.)
It allows you to select if you want to have the computers just access via Microsoft, or your own SERVERS, also lets you select the language.

Anyone know what I am talking about? (Starts with an S)Our staff is still using windows2000 on 11 year old compaqs. The system admin doesn't want them using firefox as some webpages can't be shown as well. IE7 doesn't play well with our PCs so that's out.Does this same error occur on all computers? How many computers are we talking about here?

I BELIEVE IE 7 won't play at all on those computers, since the system requirements are Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

Solve : CPU usage tracker?

OK i'll bite...

Humor me.XP Home
XP Pro
XP Media
XP Starter

That's without looking on the internet, I bet there are more.Media Center is not a TRUE XP...if it were there would be a legitimate upgrade path...
Although based on the same core platform there are so many differences that nobody including the Mothership can talk me into accepting it as XP.

As far as XP Starter what would that be ? ? A legitimate OS or training wheels for Vista ?XP Starter is a cut down version of XP.
As far as I can recall, you could only run a few programs at a TIME (3, I think) and it had a RAM limit (512mb?).
Can't recall anything else offhand, but it was basically a limited version of XP Home, sold to developing countries.oh, sorry I meant vista....
there's six versions of the new windows os
That's Vista, not XP.I was originally trying to imply how retarded it is for MS to have so many different versions of the same OS. Why not just give us one OS that does what everyone needs and let the user disable the extra stuff if they find they don't like it.I suppose if you were looking for every version of xp you could include
Home
Pro
Media Center
Starter
64-bit
Pro 64-bit
Embedded
Tablet
Fundamentals

for a TOTAL of... too many.Quote from: michaewlewis on May 10, 2007, 01:12:41 PM

Actually I find it a good Idea to create more versions sow the costumers doesn't have to pay to much for the little things they need and visa verse.
For Vista you can chose between:
Home Basic (I do have doubts about that one.)(Doesn't have the 3D flip function)

Home Premium (The first one that's actually good enough for an upgrade but I do have problems to share things with that OS)

Business (Name explains itself)

Enterprise (Don't know anything about that one)

Ultimate (The complete version of Vista but very expensive)

And I think I'm forgetting 1 but I don't know witch oneQuote from: patio on May 10, 2007, 08:10:50 AM

Remember there are 2 different XP's now.

There have always been two...

Sorry, I obviously need to learn this forums tags for sarcasm...

ANYONE know what they are?

My original point was to be more specific, as in Home or Pro, not just XP, as Pro has a built in performance monitor. I remember reading about it briefly, but with not having Pro, I haven't had chance to have a "play" with it, so I might have been able to pass him onto something/one more knowledgeable.

Im using Server 2003 on my laptop(Thinkpap t28).I can be on the internet or in Windows Explorer or Yahoo Messenger and when I go to scroll down, everything drifts to the right. Its hard to explain. Its the wierdest thing I've ever seen.I thought it was my browser and was related to the internet but its happening when Im not EVEN on the net.Im using a Wireless CARD if that has anything to do with it.But again..the issue is after I use it for a while it'll DRIFT to the right when I scroll down and drift to the LEFT when I scroll back up and when it does this you cant read anything so I shut down..unplug the wireless card, wait a while and start over...then it'll start again. Its been happening for about a month now.Installed all updates from MS.Still does it.Should I just go ahead and go thru the 1.5 hour reinstall?I would try re-installing the video drivers before doing a complete OS re-install...Thank you.I will do that this evening.I bought this machine such a long time ago and moved from state to state so I know I dont have any of the software but if Im not mistaken I can find them on support.microsoft.com?Or should I be LOOKING for them on the IBM website? The IBM site.

Solve : MS Word printing problem?

Answer»

Does your printer software have an alignment procedure? With my Canon printers, they normally prompt me to run through an alignment procedure after replacing an ink cartridge. With my Canon BJC-3000, I can also start that alignment procedure by going to Control PANEL, Printers and Faxes, selecting the printer, right click on the printer, select Properties, and then select the Maintenance tab. I have an older BJC-2000, I do not have a alignment option for it via Control Panel. So, the OPTIONS will vary, depending on your model printer and your printer software.

Since your printer is out of warranty, I don't know what you can expect from HP as far as support goes. Probably not much, other than maybe FAQ or Knowledge Base info on their website.

Try to re-install driver.Thank you all for your help with my printing problems in Word. I think the problem is finally solved. I did realign the printer CARTRIDGES. But I think what finally fixed the problem was installing SP2 for Office 2003. I can now print from my LAPTOP with much better quality. I'm going to try fixing my desktop computer next.

This is a great website! Thank you so much.

Solve : ToolTip only partially visible?

Answer»

Hi,

On pointing mouse over any icon on system tray or task bar, there comes a tooltip which describes that application.

In my case only partial is visible, the REST goes behind the taskbar itself.
Any idea why this is happening.

Please help.Apparently, you can go to Start > Programs, right-click on a random folder, and go to Sort By Name. This is said to sometimes fix the problem. I have no idea why, but a lot of people offer it as a solution. Of course, if you have your programs LISTED a certain way (like I do), then this might not be ideal.

Other than that, the only thing I can THINK of is going to Start > Taskbar and Start Menu and deselecting Keep the taskbar on top of other windows. Of course, that also isn't a very ideal solution.

Microsoft has known about this problem for awhile (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912650) and they've fixed it for Vista, but not XP for whatever reason. You could download Discover (set it to Automatic) if you don't mind having an extra program in your System Tray.

There's a registry edit out there, but I don't know if it actually works or not. I don't have this problem on my own computer, so I can't really test it.Not working.

A bit of exception here,
Mine is 2003 Server No other CLUE I'm all out of ideas for this one, I'm afraid. I hope someone manages to help you figure this out. If I come across anything, I'll get back to you.

Solve : BSOD! WOW?

Answer»

A wait operation, attach process, or yield was attempted from a DPC routine.

Stop. 0x000000B8 (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Didn't take a SS but got the important stuff I hope..

This BSOD happened twice. I can't recall what I was doing the first the time it happened but...

The second time it happened was when I was in a game.

I put in an option in the game to Auto Join When Player Slot is Available and waited.

A slot opened and it tried to connected as usual but this time it froze right when it tried to connect into the BSOD.

I've googled the stop error and all it had was solutions for win2000 or another OS that wasn't mine, a WinXP Home.

Need some help identifying the problem thanks.

UPDATE: Happened again in the same game but this time I was able to connect all the way.

But then right when I hit (I think) the enter key to start playing, it tried to reconnect to the server again which was not suppose to happen.

Then it froze again right when it tried to connect.

I am puzzle by this problem. It like to freeze when it's loading. This time I kinda felt it was about to freeze before it froze due to the unexpected reconnect. This may GET you started.

These are generally hardware issues (which often means driver issues). The articles given below are provided more as examples of the types of situations that trigger this error, rather than concrete solutions. As a rule, be sure you have the latest Service Pack edition of your Windows operating system and are using the best device drivers and software versions. After that, do normal hardware troubleshooting for the device inplicated.
http://aumha.org/a/stop.htmI've been to the link you gave me before while I was googling for a solution awhile back.

They gave me links that doesn't correspond to my OS, computer, or gave me things I don't have, like Dell.

* “Stop 0xB8 ATTEMPTED_SWITCH_FROM_DPC” Error Message When You Use a Parallel Port Zip Drive {KB 281428} Win 2000 (corrected in latest Service Pack)
* Server Stops Responding or You Receive a Stop Error Message When You Set Up a Windows Server 2003-Based Server Cluster {KB 824354} Server 2003 (hotfix available)
* “Stop 0x000000B8” Error Message on Computer with Dell OpenManage Server Administrator installed {KB 888190} Server 2003, SBS 2003 (incompatible filter driver NEEDS updating; work-around provided)
* “Stop 0x000000B8” Error Message Occurs After You Install Tivoli Storage Manager {KB 287582} Windows 2000 (software update reqired; latest SP presumably fixes also)
* Problems With Older Version of NWFS.SYSs file in Novell NetWare Client Version 4.81 {KB 319453} Windows 2000 (update Novell software)
I tried the eventviewer and it showed:

"The Parallel port driver service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it."

I think I know what that link you gave me was for now Fed heh.

But anyways, I did disable the Parallel port in my BIOS because I don't use it.

I don't know why it's causing ERRORS or why it tried to start up.

I don't have anything connected to the Parallel ports either.

It froze when I was gaming.. :-/

Sir I have not been installing drivers and know very little about DOS what I have learned was reading and MOSTLY just typing help as for doing a CLEAN install HP will not allow it or I'm not doing it right I have 6 floppies from microsoft and it will always stop on the 4th disk with an error. when I do a system restore the C:\I386|drvapps.log and several others will say they are not recoverable when I retry it will take them but what I have learned from dealing in the registry it always has alot of keys that should not be there.Funny thing is for instance if I look at defrag right after I do a restore it shows 2 partitions for C: when I format D and clear the partition it still shows 2 for a little while and then becomes 1 I know it does not make sense but neither does alot of things with this computer. I downloaded a program from Systimarials on the desktop last night and later it disappered in thin airDummy ....do you have the 25 character M/S product key code ? Solve : Is there any way to change the OS language??

Answer»

Hi everybody here!

I have an spanish friend who has bought a new portable PC here in Spain.
Before, when you bought a new PC in any PC store, this PC came with his installation disks, this is, the OS installation disk and the drivers installation disk.

But now, the new is the manufacturer gives you a preinstallated PC, with all the OS and drivers. You only must put in a few parameteres like language, time, time zone, and so on.

My friend´s PC comes with a new Windows XP Media Center Edition, and it goes so fine, but the OS languaje is "English USA", and what does it?, simply, for example, you can open the windows help in start-help and support- and all come in english language.

Even I have changed all language features to spanish language.

I have tried to look for a SOLUTION in Microsoft knowledge database, but nothing...
I have search the web and I have encountered others with the same problem, curiously, with the same Windows XP Media Center Edition.

We have called by telephone the manufacturers technical support... and it´s for give them two shoots. They nor so at least understand what is the problem...

Well, the question is: Is there any way to change the OS language? Is there any patch? Anybody knows?

Thanks.
HARLEQUIN.
I don't think it is possible to change without buying a new Windows copy in your language and doing a fresh reinstall. Sorry. Hopefully I am wrong...Quote

So, how did this error happen? Did you friend enter the wrong parameter when selecting language?

I was going to suggest that your friend try to get the seller to install a Spanish version of the OS. But, apparently you've done, although I'm not quite sure what you mean by "and it´s for give them two shoots. They nor so at least understand what is the problem..."
Hi Neil: I think the same as you. That is impossible to change the OS language if not buying other OS copy in spanish. But, believe me, I´m beguining to think those ultimate OS from MS Windows, Media Center and Vista, are all in "english USA" and have the same problem for non english speakers users.

Soybean:

This is not a seller´s problem, he has sell the new portable PC, has received the money, and good bye and good luck...
The problem is the manufacturer, that puts in the european MARKET a portable PC without OS & Drivers installation disks. He sells you a software preinstalled PC (OS and Drivers), and this is not all... no... the hard disk of 120 GB, is partitioned by the manufacturer in four parts, one of this without format, the other three are in FAT 32, and one of this three is unnacessible by the OS because contain a "recovery system of software". This is a big sheet!!!

The manufacturer hears our telephonic claims like one who hears the rain... and does like he doesn´t understand nothing. Even, we have write to manufacturers support e-mail with our claims and he doesn´t answer.

And I think, soon we will be seeing this same problem not only this I tell you, but in other people that going to shop a new PC in the future.

I don't know what you mean by "those [highlight]ultimate OS[/highlight] from MS Windows, Media Center and Vista" but, if you're saying these versions of Windows are not available in languages other than English, you're wrong. See List of languages supported in Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003

And, with any language version of Windows, other languages can be added for purposes of keyboard input, as explained in the link above.
Yes soybean: But this information about languages supported is for:
Windows XP
Windows XP Professional
Windows XP Home Edition
Windows 2000 Professional Edition
Windows Small Business Server 2003
Windows 2000
Windows Server 2003

Whose OS language can be in spanish, and in others...

But, I´m speaking about Windows XP Media Center Edition, from 2005 YEAR and not about these other formers OS,s.

I have find this:

¿Está Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 disponible en otros idiomas?
Actualmente, hay disponibles versiones localizadas para Australia, Austria, China, Francia, Alemania, Italia, Japón, Corea, Holanda, Suiza y Reino Unido.

I translate:

Is Windows XP media Center Edition 2005 available in other languages?
Actually, there are availables versions for Australia (English), Austria (German), China, France, German (German), Italy, Japan, Korea, Holand, Swiss, and United Kingdom (English).

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/292246/

Better than before:
Is Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 available in any other languages?
Localized versions are now available for Australia, Austria, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

From: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/evaluation/faq.mspx

I´m sorry for my friend, he´s so much built up one´s hopes with this XP Media Center...
When I tell him there is nothing to do....

Well... he can do something... learn a little of english ... Thanks a lot to all these forum members that have helped me to ARRIVE a conclusion about the problem.

In spite of, I must say, surfing by the big NET, I think is possible one spanish have a patch to modify the english OS language to spanish.

Well, I think this is a lot of difficult but nothing is impossible. If this is true, I´ll tell you.

HARLEQUIN.You couldn't have said it better. Hi everybody!

Even if you don´t believe it, I have changed the language in the Windows XP Media Center Edition to spanish.

How it´s possible?... with limitations.

First step: Loading the new OS WXP MCE.
Second step: Loading DONETFX.EXE (MS FRAMEWORK).
Third step: Loading NDPSP.EXE (MS FRAMEWORK SP 1).
Fourth step: Updating --> WindowsXPmediacenter2005-KB900325-USA.EXE
Fifth step: RESTARTING the OS.
Sixth step: Loading Localization pack for MS WXP MCE, who installs spanish multilingual files for Windows components.

Well, all is ready now?---> NO... the OS main language is "English USA", the Help and technical support is in english, and other OS messages... What is the new then?

You before had Files, Edition, Tools... and now have Archivo, Edición, Herramientas.

This is the best we the spanish can do with MS WXP MCE, a OS half in english half in spanish.

And thanks to the other spanish who teach me how making this change in the OS.

And thanks to all of you for reading me.

HARLEQUIN.

Thanks for posting that info. Glad to hear you found at least a partial solution.

Solve : Trouble reformatting computer.?

Answer»

Boy, I'm just chock full of little problems today. Heh. My sister has a Dell Dimension 2400 with Windows XP Home Edition SP1a that she doesn't use anymore. Hoping to use it to test a few things, I dragged it out of its hiding place and set it up in my room. I don't know what in the world happened to it, but it looks like someone (her ex-boyfriend according to her) tried to reformat it and never finished the process. So, I tried completing it and I now see why this was left undone...

It just flat-out does not work. It starts off with "Setup is being restarted..." and then it goes to the INSTALLING Windows XP screen. It asks me to insert the OS CD, and when I do, it continues the installation process. But every single time, just as it's about to finish, it goes to a blue screen with the following...

Quote

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

BAD_POOL_CALLER

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows Updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, PRESS F8 to select Advanced Startup Otions, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x000000C2 (0x00000007, 0x00000CD4, 0x00340045, 0xE203970C)

Beginning dump of PHYSICAL memory
Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance.

I tried disabling the BIOS memory options, but I either don't know what I'm doing or they're not available, because I can't find those. And I think the system files must have already been deleted because I can't run in Safe Mode. I just get a window saying that Setup can't run in Safe Mode and that it will be restarted. Any suggestions? I would really appreciate some input.

EDIT: I tried using OS CD's from a couple of different computers just to see if anything happens, but it doesn't make any difference. The computer simply ignores them and goes to the same installation screen. It looks like Windows is installing a bad device driver:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314492

The knowledge base article recommends doing a memory dump and using Dumpchk.exe:

Quote
To resolve a Stop 0xC2 error message, use the Kernel Debugging tool, and create a user dump file.

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/default.mspx (http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/default.mspx)

Thanks for the links. I read everything, but it wasn't very helpful. Not that it's a bad idea or anything...I'm just still not really sure how to go about doing this whole thing. I've never done a memory dump, so maybe that's why I'm so in the dark. From what I gather, I would need access to Startup And Recovery, correct? If so, that'd be out of the question since nothing on the computer was accessible.

However, I seem to have somehow managed to reformat the computer. I hit F12 to open the Boot Device Menu and then inserted the OS CD and selected IDE CD-ROM Device. This then allowed me to delete the current OS (only partially installed), format the petition, and install Windows XP. So yay, I was finally able to get this thing working. I'm having a couple of small problems, though. I think I should be able to handle everything, but one thing I'm not sure about is the display.

The resolution is currently stuck at 640x800, and I want to set it at 800x600 or 1024x768, but the computer won't let me. There isn't even an option. I didn't use this computer much before it was reformatted, but I know that it had a higher resolution. If I go into the Advanced Settings and mess around with the Adapter modes, I can set it to a higher resolution, but it greatly sacrifices the color quality (it will only run at 4 or 8 bits). Is there anything I can do? Is it possible that it's just because of the monitor? I only have the PC unit, so I'm using the monitor from an old eMachines W2247.Quote
Is it possible that it's just because of the monitor? I only have the PC unit, so I'm using the monitor from an old eMachines W2247.

Scratch that. I just found the Dell monitor and that hasn't helped anything.

I guess it's time to start looking for video drivers...

EDIT: Lucky me, I just found the ResourceCD with all of the required drivers. That FIXED my problem. Now I just need to install a few programs and figure out how to get the windows to stop opening maximized and I'll be set.Way to go, CBM! 8-) Yeah, i thought it was a bad driver.

Take it easy.

Solve : Why don' you at least dual boot with Linux??

Answer»

OK, folks. I am interested in why you have or have not used Linux, at least in a dual boot configuration. To me, it just makes sense, if for no other reason than it makes you safe on the internet wihout buying, downloading updates and scanning for viruses/adware/spyware on a regular basis. You can even keep Windows if you want for those "must have" applications or games that require Windows.

You don't have to have extravagant hardware, or massive disk space or RAM, (although with any operating system more can be better!) For the most part it is free and comes in many "flavors", so there will be one for you. It networks fine, plays DVD's, burns CD's, has all the applications you could want (also mostly free!), so I just want to get an idea why more people on this board don't at least give it a try. Live CD's are available for free to let you take a look at Linux running on your machine, which writes nothing to your hard drive. In fact you don't even need a hard drive! Totally safe on the internet.

Thanks for your vote and posts. (I COVERED all of the possibilities I could think of.)

GX1I started 3 days ago and I am on the way passing to Linux. Do you have recommendations for me?
Thanks.Give me your hardware specs and how your drives are CONFIGURED as well as your goal, apps used, etc. for a knowledgable response. My computers are to old I would never know the true preformance of linux. Linux didnt use to use up alot of system resources I hear but now when I use it they have all these new fancy layout etc... Ouch for my 2MB video card. Also I have hard drive space that is to little nothing over 12gb. Maybe I can put it on my brand new laptop? Nah it doesnt have a floppy drive to reformat... Will it even work with linux? I dont know. I knoe in the future I when I get a newer computer I will try linux and be glad I will never PAY $200.000 for Microsoft Windows.. I mean $200 for a OS that is Outrageous. Dont they make enough money out of games and consoules allready.. then again you can never have to much money.I am just trying to try another OS, also Windows seems boring. No specific goal for passing to Linux. Just want to try and have more knowledge of OSs. No specific apps will run. No games! (Note that I am not interested in entertainment, except music )I am curious about installation, requiremetnts, hardware compatibility, etc... Ok I am reading books and searching for information on the net. But more exact recommendations would be better.

I will buy a new computer for the dual boot. Current PC have low configuration. So please you give me info regarding to recommended configuration.

Planning to have dual boot Windows 2003 Server and Linux (don't know which version, may be Red Hat?)
Approximate summary will be:
Intel Pentium 4, 2.6 Ghz
HD - 80 GB (Maxtor) (3 partitions probably 15,15,50MB)
RAM - 512 MB
Video - 128 MB
BIOS - Award

If Linux would produce ONE operating system instead of a plethora of systems I might then try it.

The thing to remember is that Linux is not a company. It is a kernel to an operating system. Distribuions are made based on that kernel and apps that the developers felt were relevant for their product. These may be large companies, Novell/SuSe or small one man productions, There is no overseer of a Linux project because that is the nature of free software. Some distributions are better for servers, some for low end systems, some for the latest and greatest, etc.

The fact that you recognize the value of Knoppix and use it shows it is relevant to you. Knoppix can also be instqalled to a hard drive, you know.

Quote
If Linux wants to get used properly it will have to come up with a system like Apple Mac and produce its own computer, in my considered opinion.

That is how Linux has been different. Since Apple sells the hardware and the software they control all variables, so compatibility is not an issue. You can't just SCRAPE together parts and run Apple software on it, like you can with Windows or Linux. The price of this compatibility is higher cost due to the monopoly.

Windows will run on a hodge podge of parts (usuallly) but the newer versions require more and different hardware. The licensing is what drives the cost of Windows, another virtual monopoly, and is now evident with the WIndows activation to ensure 1 copy of Windows for each machine (or it doesn't work). Ina ddition, most companies DFO not write drivers for Linux for their products so these have to be reverse engineered after the fact. (Ever hear of a WinModem that works in DOS?)

Some Linux companies, ex: Linspire have been pushing hard to get their O/S bundled with new hardware as this is how Windows got to their current status - bundling (plus they also used illegal tactics to squash the competition, but that's another story.) That is the number one reason for XP sales, they just HAPPENED to come with your new computer you bought at Best Buy. Oh and you paid for it, make no mistake about that. It just wasn't on the sales ticket.

I think there is a need for many variants of Linux, but in the end we are left with a few larger companies that will make it to the mainstream - SuSe, Linspire, Xandros, Mandriva, and RedHat obviously. Some have gone, some have merged and that will continue.

The fact that there is no huge conglomerate producing your O/S is why the price is either free or ridiculously low, especially compared to Windows, but the result of no overseeing of the "final product" can either be seen as a blessing or a drawback. Win98,

How much RAM and I recall you had a Celeron processor. You could also try using this old machine as is for a less power hungry distribution, like Slackware. Are you on dialup or cable/DSL?

Solve : Problems with saving from office to a network??

Answer»

Hello, please can SOMEONE help me??!!

I work for a SMALL charity with pc's networked in eack of their offices. A problem keeps ARISING when saving office files. Sometimes when you save a word or excel document and go back in to find it, it has disappeared. You then find lots of files with names like 869F8000, 37CD2100, 618A7100 etc. If you're lucky you will find out its the excel spreadsheet you've worked on and you can re-name it back when you open it. Sometimes though it tells you you can't save it and you try to rename it etc etc to no avail. But then when you close it another digit file has appeared in the folder and it a record of the one you opened but couldn't save! Our computer people basically don't know why its doing it and it's corrupting files! Help! The PC's are running with windows XP, and office 2003. Is it an office issues, a server issue, or our anti-virus or something. Its really driving US mad and sometime we lose data. Any ideas anyone, please??!!! I've looked through the internet but I can't find this problem. many thanks!!! SarahWhat happens if you try to save a file to the local machine and not another network location / does it happen on all machines / did it ever work right / all drivers updated / checked M$ site for known issues?

Solve : Outlook 2003 start up?

Answer»

I've just started trying to run Outlook 2003 and am stymied right at the start. When outlook comes up, I get a pop-up with the title "Connecting to Microsoft Exchange Server" and below that it says "Your Microsoft exchange server is unavailable"

Nothing happens when I choose "TRY again"
When I choose "work offline" I get a message "Unable to open your default email folders. Your profile is not configured"

I can't get PAST this. I would appreciate any comments, even those which PUT me in the dummy category.

There is another pop-up on the screen that says

"Configuring Outlook
migrating preferences
creating welcome page
imporing user data"

I could be wrong but, if I recall correctly, you are asked during installation of Outlook whether you are on an Exchange server. Does that sound familiar? If so, how did you respond to that during installation?I don't know the answer to that but, I'll REINSTALL later and TELL you what my response was. How should I respond?

Thanks for your reply

CecilI re installed and was not asked any questions. Its still doing the same thing after reinstallation.

CecilAre you, in fact, on an Exchange server? If so, see this: Your Microsoft Exchange Server is unavailableSoybean
That did it. I finally had to contact Microsoft and they led me through a fix. It was your thread that got me on the right track.

Solve : I'm having an annoying problem with Outlook?

Answer»

When I delete an email the subject line and sender name is still showing in my inbox with a line through it. It's like it's not DELETING the messages, it's just making them light grey (INSTEAD of black) and putting a line through them. This happens when I try to delete emails or when I try to move them from my inbox into a folder. Does anyone know how to fix this?
It just started happening for some reason, it was fine yesterday.

I've tried rebooting, I've tried everything and outlook help was useless.

This happens with IMAP mail. To purge deleted messages, do Edit-->Purge.Quote

thanks dl65, thankfully my files are safe but outlook 2002 is driving me absolutely mad!Well this always happens on IMAP accounts, whether you can see it or not. If you don't want to see the messages marked for deletion, there's a suitable option on the View menu. On Outlook 2003, it's counter-intuitively hidden under View-->Arrange by-->Current View. (What genius at MS thought of that naivgation path? Bozos!) Bear in mind that the messages will remain on your ISP's server until they are explicitly deleted ("purged") UNLESS your email client auto-deletes.

This is all because of the way IMAP works. It's by design. Personally when I'm using Outlook and deleteing IMAP mail, I first hit DELETE, and then PRESS Alt-E, Alt-S - that's the keyboard shortcut to purge. It's become a habit.Quote

As to how it changed - possibly there's a keyboard shortcut to switch to this view and you accidentally hit it.Quote

Solve : Outlook Password problem?

Answer»

I hope someone can HELP me with this Outlook 2003 (?) problem. I just got a new notebook and Outlook is refusing to SAVE my password, even though all the save password boxes have been ticked. So everytime it checks the server I am having to put my password in.

The official Microsoft site says to GO into the registry and CHANGE stuff in there, which we have done but it is still not working.

Interestingly Live Messenger is also refusing to remember the password/login details.

Has anyone come across this problem and FIXED it? Any ideas?? It is driving me nuts!

Solve : Error connecting to domain?

Answer»

Hi,

When I try to log onto my domain I get the following error message:

Windows cannot connect to the domain, either because the domain controller is down or otherwise unavailable, or because your computer account was not found. Please try again later. If this message continues to appear, contact your system administrator for assistance.

The server is Windows 2003 Server, and I have 16 PCs wirelessly connected to it (all using Windows XP Pro). All of the PCs are fully up-to-date with the latest Windows UPDATE downloads.

This error occured just after I completed restoring the PC using an image I created a few weeks ago with DriveImageXML. Obviously the program caused the error, but I was wondering if there was a way to correct the error, or will I just have to do a clean install of everything?

If anyone can suggest a solution to my problem it would be great.

Thanks 8-)Its probably because you computer has a new GUID Global unique identifier

what you'll NEED to do is remove the old computer from the DC and then try to add the computer again.

or if the computer was imaged wile it was a MEMBER of the domain you may have a problem that it thinks its a member but it has a new id that does not match up with its record in the domain, you'll have to remove the computers record of being in the domain and then ATTEMPT to add it again.

Try these things and post your results.

in the long run it may be simpler to just reinstall windows from the disk, and make sure you have all the drivers and service PACKS at handQuote

Thanks for the reply, but I've found the solution on a dirrerent forum. Here's the solution that worked for me (just in case anyone is interested):

Log in with the local admin account, dis-join it from the domain, join to a workgroup, reboot, rename computer, then join back to the domain, add the admin accounts, etc under manage, reboot, then you should be good to goWell i thoght i was suggesting that, i guess i need to work on my english skills

Solve : Folder system in windows 2003 server?

Answer»

I have windows 2003 server. Networking is on domain system. I WANT to create one folder in the server as following attributes.

- none can directly enter inside it from WORKSTATION. It should ask user name and PASSWORD to login into this folder. the users who are granted to access he may go direclty.

....................................... ....................................... ....................................... .................................
Just remove "Everyone" from that.

Those who want DIRECT access, put them in a group and add that group there.
Also add one more user, for those who are not in that gorup.sound about rightRight click the folder, go to properties and go to the securities tab. Set the users you don't want to acess the folder to deny on all sections, only giving ADMINISTRATOR (or whoever you want) full control. That should do it for you.

My emails are working PROPERLY because i am able to access them through the WEB but ideally i would rather them come through on my outlook. My server is btinternet and they say the problem isnt with them. the error messages thatcome up are as follows:
Task 'mail.btinternet.com - receiving' reported error (0x80042108) : 'outlook is unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to recieve this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).

Perhaps a test of your hard drive with the free diagnostics from the APPROPRIATE drive maker's site AND an uninstall/reinstall of Outlook are in order.Thank you so much for that microsoft link. Solve : What are these Windows telnet files for??

Answer»

I FOUND some files on a Windows Server 2003 machine.

tlntsvr.exe
tlntsess.exe
tlntadmn
tntsvrp.dll

I tried to run the executables, but the black command prompt WINDOW closed immediately. Then I ran it from the command prompt so I could see whatever error, and it said "PROGRAM too big to fit in memory."

What do they do? I couldn't find these files on my normal Windows XP computer, can I use them to set up a Telnet Server or manage it remotely with the tlntadmn.exe? I thought Windows only came with a telnet client.Might have a look here:

http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/library/566bc823-b916-40cf-a0c0-1dedffaebeb11033.mspx?mfr=true

TLNTADMN.EXE (Telnet Administrator). USED to configure the settings for the Telnet server under Windows XP.

TLNTSESS.EXE (Telnet Sessions Viewer). Displays the currently connected Telnet sessions.

TLNTSVR.EXE (Telnet). An application that allows a Telnet terminal session with an online host.

Alan <>< Any idea how I can use them?

I read the article already, and I think it only tells you to use the command which isn't working.Telnet is inherently insecure and not an advisable service to run. SSH is best. What exactly do you wish to achieve?

Solve : Add License Wizard is missing?

Answer»

I need to add CALs to my Windows Small Business Server 2003 domain controller. I access "Licensing" in the Administrative Tools folder and it tells me to go to the Add License Wizard. I have read that the wizard is in the Server Management CONSOLE. I can find neither the Wizard nor the Console. I am beginning to have the horrible thought that I somehow INSTALLED the Server operating system incorrectly, even though I was very careful. Everything else is working correctly. The "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server" folder is also absent. SP1 is already installed. Does anyone know to get to the Add License Wizard? The ISSUE has been resolved. I SPOKE with Dell Tech Support and they had me simply insert the Windows 2003 SBS installation CD. I clicked on the "Install Now" option and the "Continue Setup" icon soon appeared on the DESKTOP. I just finished the installation that I began last June, and the Server Management console was then present along with the Add License Wizard. I added the licenses and everything seems to be working fine. The Dell Tech first told me that I would have to re-create my staff's user accounts and also rejoin all of our computers to the domain, but thankfully that was not necessary.

Solve : Problems with Outlook sending/receiving?

Answer»

I recently downloaded all of my emails from my webmail to save in Outlook 2003.
I downloaded SEVERAL accounts from the same server - most by IMAP, but the primary/default address by POP3.

Most of them downloaded okay. But when I try to download some IMAP FOLDERS or SEND via POP3, both seem to have problems connecting/staying connected to the server.
Nothing is wrong with my internet connection, and it only works some of the time, so I am confused.
what could the problem be? might it have anything to do with firewall or blocking of ports? but this shouldn't happen if the firewall is off, right???

also, when i downloaded all of my primary account's emails via POP3, and I must have had the OPTION to "delete messages from the server" selected. so it downloaded EVERYTHING in my inbox, and now there is nothing on the server - so all my folders are gone, although i didn't get a chance to download them by IMAP. this is probably a long shot, but is there ANY chance these could ever be recovered???bokchoy......Quote

Solve : Outlook 2003 - Not getting email?

Answer»

Hi everyone, I'm having a wierd issue with Outlook. My version is Outlook 2003 sp2.

For some reason, I have not been receiving mails for a very long time. (probably a month)...when I do a send/receive, the program checks for emails, and the process completes saying there are no new mail messages.

However, I have sent myself numerous emails, and have also been told by all of my friends and family that they have sent emails to me, yet I am not receving any. The program doesn't send emails to junk, nor does it act as it's scanning the msges to check for viruses on the mail server, it just acts as it checks for mail, and there are none on the server.

No error messages show up EITHER. And finally, when I log onto winXP, the beginning screen where it asks for which user I want to use and password before logging onto my desktop, shows that I have 70+ unread mail msgs. ((Not sure if it's referring to Outlook or not...because Outlook has 0 unread messages))

This is very wierd. Anyone know how to fix this? This is what I use to check business emails as well, yet nothing has come in a very long time lol Before I use to get spam DAILY!! Now I want my spam back lol

Thank you!Can you access your email messages via a web browser to VERIFY that those test messages you sent to yourself, and other email you think you should have received, are out there on the mail server waiting to be downloaded?

Many ISP's provide a webmail method of viewing your email, even if you use POP mail and normally download your mail to your computer. You might have this option but simply were unaware of it. I use my current ISP, Earthlink, and used Outlook Express for my email for many months before I realized I could also access my email via web browser. I also learned that Earthlink has a spamBlocker FEATURE which I have found quite advantageous in controlling spam.

Have tried testing your email connection in Outlook? If you go to Tools, E-mail Accounts, View or change existing e-mail accounts, select the account, then click on Change, you'll see a button for Test Account Settings. That's the test I'm talking about.

Alternatively, you might try setting up your email account in Outlook Express as a WAY of testing your email account settings. In other words, see if you can RETRIEVE email with it.

Solve : Leave messages on Server?

Answer»

I have loaded Outlook 2003 onto an XP machine on a work network and didn't activate the setting 'leave a copy of messages on the server' now when I check under Tools, email accounts, view/change, more settings, advanced tab I can't see the setting to activate this, all emails are getting downloaded locally and I don't have a backup on the server (so having to make manual backups or copies of the messages/pst file) - in typical IT fashion this has happened on a user who EVERYTHING goes wrong for so any fast help will be most APPRECIATED.
Two possibilities: remove the POP3 email account, and recreate it, choosing the correct settings this time (it's not a setting I've ever NOTICED). Alternatively (and this, in my view is by far the better option), use IMAP INSTEAD of POP3. IMAP is designed for situations where email can be accesses from more than one location/computer. The emails are all held on the mail server, until a command is given to delete them (from one of the access points).

Ask your email provider about IMAP. It is much more powerful than POP3.go to ur online e-mail account and check the POP3 settins and SMTP settings.. and look around.. Thanks for the rapid response
Im pretty sure we do use IMAP, when I create a new account I don't choose POP3 I choose exchange server and on all other email accounts the mail is stored on the server and accessed from different locations. I tried to do what you say and remove the account but when I go into Tools, Email accounts etc the account is not there to remove and re-add.
Am I doing something wrong?Does >this knowledgebase article< help you? Thanks, I saw that yesterday when I googled this issue. It explains how the emails are handled but not how to alter settings.
Appreciate your time very much. Thanks.Ultimately you may find it easiest just to reinstall Outlook for that user...?Yes I tried that at the time but I will ty it again. Thank youWhen uninstalling, ensure you also remove Outlook CONFIGURATION data (keeping the .pst file in a safe place).

any ideas? [not including beggin to my parents or boot disk ]

[smiley=dankk2.gif] in advance, Eran. What do you mean by "locked up"?I don't understand what you have said at all. How about a repost, but less dramatic and with a few more details/There are programs you can RUN on a computer to find passwords, and boot disks like knoppix to can use to change them

But why do you need to get the passwordok, i had a fight with my parents, and so, they made my account limited-meaning i cant install/open/save downloaded files, get access to control PANEL,system drives and so on...

for now, i found a way to use zip files

now, i'm looking for the admin password , to remove the limitations.
regedit also limits me for security issues, which makes my life a nightmareTake the long view, mate. Accepting the PUNISHMENT (for now) and earning their respect will stand you in much better STEAD in future.Yes, this is a chance to show your true character, ONE way or the other.

Solve : IIS??

Answer»

Just installed the express edition of SQL Server, and it's telling me that I don't have an IIS. If I knew what the *censored* that was, I would get one. COULD someone tell me what it is.
I think it has to do with server side application (Like Windows Server 2003) but could be wrong.
IIS is Internet Information Server, Microsoft's web server. It isn't free!

What do you need SQL express (MSDE) for? Can you USE MySQL instead (free)? You could then ALSO use Apache web server (free).I'm trying to teach myself SQl server for my job. We use it as our database server and use it to link to our website to get our reports and data to our customers.
It's a PAIN in the *censored* i know, but it must be learned unfortunatly.I've got a notion that IIS is an INSTALLATION option on XP Pro. Goodness knows why, because XP Pro isn't a server O/S; but if you have XP Pro installed, go to Add/Remove Windows components. You should see it there.

Solve : check the LAN connection?

Answer»

Hi,

I was wondering if ANYONE might be able to HELP me here. Recently, i noticed that the network connection on my computer desktop goes off and back on again in a BLINK of the eye (very quick). This happens very very rarely. I would say "every now and then". Unfortunately, this computer(or called mail-server) is used to host emails. This brought to my attention when i was trying to send email to someone using outlook 2003 and it immediately bounced back saying "we do not relay [emailprotected]". As soon as i closed up the outlook application and open it up again, the mail went thru with no drama.

I'm still guessing here. I still haven't confirmed as to what caused this problem. But for now, i suspect the connection on the mail-server.

My question is if there is some sort of software that ALLOWS to check the LAN connection. And it'd report to you if the connection went down or rather.

Any ideas?

Thank you very much in advanceSorry, I'm not clear about your setup? Are you saying that the computer you work on also functions as a mail server? What sort of setup do you have? What size LAN? Many hubs? Routers? Etc.

Solve : COM Server application permissions...?

Answer»

Hi.

I was having problems with my PC and network connection, so I reinstalled Windows, did all of the critical updates from Microsoft, and problem still here.

I get a DCOM error in the event viewer.

Message is (to help if someone does any future searching):
Quote

The machine-default permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{555F3418-D99E-4E51-800A-6E89CFD8B1D7}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE SID (S-1-5-19). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

I went to the help link and it states:
Quote
User Action
Verify that the user has the appropriate permissions to start the DCOM server.

To assign permissions

Using Regedit, navigate to the following registry value
HKCR\Clsid\clsid value\localserver32
The clsid value is the information displayed in the message.
In the right pane, double-click Default. The Edit String dialog box is displayed. Leave this dialog box open.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Component Services.
In the Component Services snap-in, expand Computers, expand My Computer, and double-click DCOM Config.
In the right pane, locate the program by using its friendly name.
Right-click the program name, and then select Properties.
On the Security tab, in the Launch and Activation Permissions group box, select Customize, and then click Edit.

There is no localserver32 value under the CLSID in the registry, as suggested, so I go to Localservice INSTEAD. The value I get when getting the data value is HWDeviceCustomProperties.

I then goto DCOM config, and there is no HWDeviceCustomProperties in there, nor is there any instance of the CLSID code.

I really don't know where else to go to fix the problem. My PC doesn't restart, my network connection just dies, and to access the internet I have to reboot to be able to connect again. BTW, I notice you only have SP1 on your system. Have you tried updating to SP2?

Alan <>< Thanks for the link. Tried it yesterday but you have to pay to view the solution.

Was kinda hoping for a free solution.

On X64 it only SP1 is available, so I'm stuck with that, but it is fully up to date from Windows Update.

The problem is caused by a mismatch of files that occurs when you install Microsoft Internet Information Services. This problem occurs if you install IIS from an installation point that is not running Windows Server 2003 SP1. See M908181 for details on this issue.

See M817065, M913119, M919090, M919592 and M920720 for additional information about this event.

Those links seem more like what I am after, but you gotta pay to view them.PS. I noticed I was getting an IPSec entries before each of these ERRORS:

The IPSec driver has entered Secure mode. IPSec policies, if they have been configured, are now being APPLIED to this computer.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.p
Event ID 4294.

Anyway, I followed the help link and there was no info on the problem. It did give me another link to try which produced:

1. Delete the local policy registry subkey. To do this, follow these steps: a. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
b. In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\IPSec\Policy\Local
c. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
d. Click Yes to confirm that you want to delete the subkey.
e. Quit Registry Editor

2. Rebuild a new local policy store. To do this, follow this step:a. Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 polstore.dll, and then click OK.
So I have done that, and will now leave the PC on whilst going to work and see if problem persists.

(PS. Just posting all the info in case anyone else has similar problems, then they can find it easily VIA search. I'm not spamming, honest )Nope, made no difference

Solve : Allowing Standard user on the AD to edit registry?

Answer»

Hi.

We have a Server environment here, runnnig Active Directory. One of our Legacy applications that we use writes to the HKLM section in the registry. Only standard users will use this application, and cannot WRITE to the registry.

What is the easyest way to allow a group to write UNRESTRICTED to the registry. Im sure its in GPEdit.msc (Group policy editor) somewhere, but to be honest Im not 100% sure how to do it. Im from back in the days on Poledit.exe

Thanks In Advance

-EddieIs it Server 2003 or 2000? Windows made some pretty significant changes from 00 to 03, especially in the GPO part of AD.

I just went to open up my evaluation version of 2003 server and it told me the time [180 days]had run out... So I need to reinstall it.

If you open it up it's pretty intuitive. Actually, you have a boatload more options than Poledit EVER GAVE you. It's fun ...so have fun

Alan <>< I'm REINSTALLING 2003 server now.

1. One of the first things do to (in the MEANTIME) is create an OU (Organizational Unit) and put all the users that you want to be able to edit the registry in there.

2. Step 2 is on the way

You didn't say, is it 2000 or 2003 server? :-?

What is the easyest way to allow a group to write unrestricted to the registry.
You're joking, right? If you're going to allow any kind of write access, it must be to a very limited portion of the registry.

Fire up registry editor (as a domain & local PC admin); find the subkey you're happy to allow access to; right-click; choose "permissions".Kool. Ill give those ideas a shot today.

Thanks for that.

Also its 2000 server. (standard not advanced)
