Solve : How do I get rid of Windows 8? |
Answer» Quote from: soybean on April 26, 2013, 12:29:44 PM I believe Windows Live MovieMaker is a standard app in Windows 8. Do you not have it? Have you looked the "All apps" view? No, I didn't. I just searched and downloaded it. I'll check to see if I have that app. Quote from: SuperDave on April 26, 2013, 12:02:05 PM Thanks CC. I can certainly see why some people are frustrated. I just found out the Windows MovieMaker won't work on Windows 8 even though it allowed me to DOWNLOAD it.They made it even more confusing. Windows 8 calls Microsoft Security Essentials, Windows Defender; even though Windows Defender was the name of a previous product. Windows Defender is included as part of Win8 & some branded computers disable it when they install Norton Suite; then the retailer tries to sell you McAfee Suite, so Norton has to be disabled. This is an Office Depot ploy & on the computer I had to fix, they screwed it up so bad, there was no AV installed at all. Some good Q&A here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/mse-protect_start/windows-defender-and-microsoft-security-essentials/5309cb8d-02e1-40e8-974f-0dcedb9ab9fd Quote from: SuperDave on April 26, 2013, 04:11:53 PM No, I didn't. I just searched and downloaded it. I'll check to see if I have that app.In case you don't know yet, to display all apps, right click on the Start screen somewhere outside of the tiles. You'll see a bar appear at the bottom of the screen and a button titled "All apps". Click it to see all apps. Or, just type movie anywhere on the Start screen and that should bring up the button for Windows Live MovieMaker. I was able to find and download Windows live movie maker then ran the compatibility test and was able to get it to run correctly. Quote from: soybean on March 25, 2013, 06:44:09 PM Here's one REFERENCE I think you'll find very helpful. http://adrynalyne.blogspot.com/2012/09/windows-8-survival-guide-v-10.html Once I discovered I could have my old Desktop back minus the Big start MENU I was happy. I did have to add a start button but the Big Bad Start menu I don't have a problem with it anymore. I just access everything from my Desktop like I always did. |

Solve : Issues ranging from slow browsing -- To inability to open certain programs.? |
Answer» I've had my PC for, some time between 1-2 years. Over the past month or so, I've been having a huge amount of problems, which have steadily been getting worse over time. I play a lot of different games on my computer, and I browse a lot. It started with FPS drops in the games I played. Eventually my browsers started to slow. Of course, when the issues started to get a bit annoying, and I couldn't find any way to fix it, I decided to refresh my systems(Not Fully Clean the Drive). It fixed things, but only for a couple of days. And each time after the issues come back -- they come back worse. |

Solve : Looking for a link for Windows 10? |
Answer» I have Windows 8 Pro (Build 9200) Not licensed) I can't afford to pay for Windows 10. Is there a legit link out there that I can download without losing programs or ruining my laptop? I'm not too computer savvy. I just want an upgrade. Any assistance would be appreciated.Third party programs that run on Windows 10 or almost always made to run on Windows 8.1 also. So it is not CLEAR why you want to move unto windows 10 at this time. Is there some specific thing about Windows 10 you want to have? Introduction Another idea. Some vendors offer older computers with Windows 10 installed. It is legal. Microsoft gives certified vendors the right to sell a older PC with Windows 10 on it. Sounds crazy, but true. You can buy a used PC with Windows 10 for less taht the retail price of Windows 10. No joke. Search for Used PC with Windows 10 and see for your self. Example: Acer Desktop Computer $100 Just a thought. Yeah. I was having second thoughts on it after I had posted. I just wanted to have the latest version for a friend. You're right. I'd better leave it as it is. It functions properly. I think I'm going to continue to keep it that way. Lol. Thanks for your reply.Just because one forum member suggested not upgrading, you gave up on your quest? To answer your question, here is the link where you can still download Windows 10: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 As long as you can provide a valid product key from Win 7 or Win 8, you can do the upgrade for free and Windows 10 will activate. (Oops! I see you have an unlicensed copy of Win 8. Sorry, don't know where you can steal Windows 10 from, not to mention that helping you defraud Microsoft would be against forum rules). My suggestion would be to do a system image backup of the current drive, then do the upgrade and TRY IT FOR YOURSELF. If you decide you don't like it, restore from the system backup. |

Solve : Set email on Noika 521? |
Answer» I just bought a bargain Noika Lumina 521 at a great price. And it asks me to verify the email accountant and get a code to verify that it is my account.Often when you attempt to log in on a new DEVICE you need to answer security questions or a code is E_mailed so you can verify the access is authorized.Patio: Brand new. Thanks for the manual. I am reading it now. BC: Thanks, I will try and see if I can get it to send me the code. Update. The solution was to just create a new e-mail account with Microsoft. No logical reason was apparent. But a new e-mail account did the trick. I created the new account with a new user on my desktop. Then I did a log in to the new account on the Noika Windows phone. So now it works. At $20, it was a great deal. But there is no upgrade path to Windows 10. Other than just buying a copy of Windows 10. |

Solve : Asus X550C Notebook will not boot? |
Answer» My Asus will not boot. It loops from loading and diagnostic, attempting repair, but will not load OS. trying to save Documents through safe mode but can not access safe mode.Machine stuck in "Diagnosing your PC". Asus support SAYS to hit f4 during restart for safe mode, to no avail.how old? you're going to have to remove the drive if you need personal files recovered. Just wanted to add that removal might not be necessary to gain access to the data on that drive ... as for while the hard drive might be toast.... if its not toast and you want your data recovered without opening the laptop to remove the hard drive, if your able to make a bootable thumb drive of Linux MINT for example you can boot the system off of the USB port and then have a healthy Linux Mint OS running in a LIVE environment aka LIVE Distro where this USB stick acts like a hard drive for Linux to operate and does not require an installation to the system its used on to function. Then if the hard drive is healthy enough to mount the drive which it should do automatically, you then will be able to navigate to this hard drive and then if the file system isnt completely trashed you could plug in an additional USB thumb drive while also keeping the Linux USB drive inserted for the OS to function or external hard drive in addition to Linux USB stick and be able to copy the data to external media before you go with any attempt to reinstall an OS to that drive. I have used this method with many systems with drives that spun and had partial physical damage = bad sectors or just data corruption as well as even infected systems where people needed their data and I was able to clean up the problem with the platform immunity that Linux brings with it to be immune from malware targeted for Windows and requiring Windows to function. NOTE: If a drive is encrypted this wont work without a way to decrypt the data. Linux method of access to Windows system drives that cant boot themselves to a functional OS but able to boot the system to Linux suggestion works with drives that are non encrypted. Did you create the optional system recovery media on USB stick(s) or DVD-R's to be able to install a clean OS back to hard drive? Your going to need that if installing fresh to this drive or a replacement drive. If you never MADE this media, you will need to contact ASUS and possibly pay a fee for them to mail you a system recovery media set for this specific model. If the drive doesnt spin and you need the data, then it will need to go out to a data recovery center and they are pricey. If the drive spins and Linux cant mount it there are tools out there to get the data back, but I would suggest getting assistance from a professional hands on with your drive as for one oops can wipe out your data. I have a tool that works good for crashed drives that runs under Windows which is called GetdataBack NTFS. But it cost me $79.99 when i bought this software. It was able to recover data from a laptop drive with the clunk of death which is pretty impressive, but it took almost a week to assemble the data from damaged drive to a healthy drive for 5GB of data on a 8GB drive at my prior employer where a guy dropped his laptop while it was running. Hopefully you ran some backups to other drives either CLOUD storage or external devices so that your not risking a total loss if this drive doesnt want to work with you to give up its data. Here are links about how to put Linux Mint on o USB flash drive. just easy: https://linoxide.com/linux-how-to/install-linux-mint-18-usb-flash/ more derail: http://www.linuxandubuntu.com/home/how-to-install-linux-mint-from-usb Other versions of Linux also can do the job. Most will allow install to USB. and just to state the obvious - backup, Backup, BACKUP. Quote Just wanted to add that removal might not be necessary to gain access to the data on that drive ... as for while the hard drive might be toast.... if its not toast and you want your data recovered without opening the laptop to remove the hard drive, if your able to make a bootable thumb drive of Linux MINT for example you can boot the system off of the USB port and then have a healthy Linux Mint OS running in a LIVE environment aka LIVE Distro where this USB stick acts like a hard drive for Linux to operate and does not require an installation to the system its used on to function. This is a huge assumption since we dont know the health of the HDD... No guarantees that the data would be recoverable, hence the drive could be "toast". Just stating the facts that Linux "could" be used as a means to accessing the data and copying the data to another healthy drive if the drive is healthy enough without drive removal and without having to buy a drive dock or external enclosure or even having to add the drive to a different computer to recover data. What I shared was mainly in regards to ( correcting ) Marks statement of " you're going to have to remove the drive if you need personal files recovered" of which that's NOT the only option for accessing data on a troubled drive, and so I threw the Linux Live OS option out there as a means that doesnt require a person to remove a hard drive or in some laptops have to dismantle the system including removal of main board to swap drives as my ASUS X401A is a poor design for memory and hard drive replacement or upgrade. So others who might come across this are aware of the Linux Live OS option vs only way of getting data off a drive like this being removal and adding it into a healthy system as a slave drive or connecting to a USB drive dock or external enclosure to take a chance on data recovery as Mark was suggesting. DaveLembke, You idea is good. If he can boot from a Linux USB device, it would indicate that most of the laptop is working and the issue is likely the Hard Drive and/or the operating system. The USB boot is the less intrusive test tool. An even if the HDD is good, a backup would be a good idea. From my own experience the Windows recovery system is a high risk tool. It has the knack of sometimes making things worse. Quote From my own experience the Windows recovery system is a high risk tool. It has the knack of sometimes making things worse. This is usually when people dont read all options and fully understand what will happen and with wrong selection made then their data gets wiped out when the drive gets formatted. Not a process that should be rushed and quick clicked if you want to keep your data from getting wiped out. And yes, the USB method would also test the rest of the computer to verify that its not something else and thus limited to SATA drive controller or Hard drive, with hard drive being the most likely cause of the problem as for drive controllers rarely die .... unless liquids spilled into a laptop or physically damaged from a fall or getting crushed from stepped or sat on etc.At the risk of being cute, what was in the coffee? Sugar? Milk? Was any attempt made to remove residue after the coffee spill? Here are links with some ideas: Use a hair dryer: http://lifehacker.com/5440670/how-to-save-your-laptop-from-spills Quote There's generally no need to completely disassemble the laptop because they're designed with an eye toward ventilation. Make sure to keep the lid open as it dries out, though, so air can circulate around the keyboard.Another: https://betanews.com/2016/12/16/coffee-soda-water-spill-laptop-what-need-to-know-do/ Quote First of all, it is important to know that you need to power off your device immediately after the spill. Do not power it back on until you have cleaned it. I cannot stress this enough. If you rush it, you could fry the internals and then it's game over. So, prepare yourself for being without your laptop for at least a couple of days. Unplug the power cable and remove the battery, if possible. Here is a more complete method: http://www.pcworld.com/article/3067332/hardware/when-water-coffee-or-liquid-spills-on-your-laptop-do-this.html They warn that you have to really work to get the material out. What they do not tell you is that you may have to remove the motherboard and clean it with a solvent and let it dry. You my wish to hire somebody to do this. Alcohol can be used, be it is flammable. Yet it is my personal preference. Read on. A technician might use Trichloroethylene , which is very toxic. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trichloroethylene Quote The chemical compound trichloroethylene is a halocarbon commonly used as an industrial solvent. It is a clear non-flammable liquid with a sweet smell. It should not be confused with the similar 1,1,1-trichloroethane, which is commonly known as chlorothene.Note that is can remove water and dissolve oils. Quote Trichloroethylene is an effective solvent for a variety of organic materials. So yes, it does the job. But it is very, very toxic and should only be use by a qualified technician. Or use a newer solvent that does not have such toxic dangers. http://www.turi.org/Our_Work/Cleaning_Laboratory/Past_Projects/Trichloroethylene-and-Chlorinated-Solvents-Reduction/Ten_Tips_for_Replacing_Trichloroethylene_TCE Hope you fix it without going to such an extreme. As a last resort, sell it for parts. |

Solve : Screens display black after startup, intermittent crashes? |
Answer» Hi, this string of issues started about a week ago, maybe a bit less, and I'll recount it as best I can. It first started as I was trying to play Overwatch (though I don't think it's necessarily specific to that game). My computer started up normally, as did Overwatch. I was even able to connect to a match, but it then crashed me back to desktop during character select or shortly after the match started. |

Solve : Move files to folders with same name in Windows? |
Answer» I use following command to copy files to folders with same name. Imagefiles - 2015 trips Filenames are in a format like these: Quote Imagefiles - 2015 trips - France - 01.jpg for /f %x in ('dir /ad /b') do move "%x*.*" "%x\" just cuts the first part of name of folder and says, "Cannot move MULTIPLE files to a single file" and syntax errors in some cases.do that dir /ad /b at a command prompt and you just get folders without anything else. where you have "%x*.*" that with would PARSE to "Imagefiles - 2015 trips*.*" and then you try to move it to "Imagefiles - 2015 trips\" still don't know what you are trying to achieve - do you want to move all your folder up one level? or into the same folders? the first move argument should probably be "%x\*.*" for starters. and is this done from within a .BAT file? The thread title says 'Move files to folders with same name" But the folder and file names you've provided are not the same- You want to move files that have names that begin with the same name as a folder into that folder. That's a seemingly minor detail that changes the solution a lot. Code: [Select]for /f %x in ('dir /ad /b') do move "%x*.*" "%x\" for /f uses space as a delimiter by default. As a result You'll only see the first part of the dir output line line up to the first space. basically you'll go through every folder- but the %x variable will only ever be "Imagefiles" for the set of folders you mentioned. you need to add "DELIMS=" to indicate that you don't want to split the text: Code: [Select]for /f "DELIMS=" %x in ('dir /ad /b') do move "%x*.*" "%x\" You can also get a simpler command by using for /D which will iterate over directories: Code: [Select]for /d %P in (*.*) do move "%P*.*" "%P" Thank you for your HELP and also for explanation! |

Solve : No write access to arbitrary folders in windows 8 via file associations? |
Answer» DEAR Friends, dear experts, I'm new here, sorry if doing something wrong. Try to explain in bad English. Need help with windows 8 access rigths. Any help is highly appreciated (but I do not need to be protected by anyone ELSE). My Problem: Need to write to (almost) any folder in my system. Have Installed the applications as admin, have the lnk files defined as admin, WORKING ok, BUT when I start a program by double clicking a file (via file type association), this program doesn't start with admin rights and so it cannot store the file to the desired location. I cannot restrict this access to any subfolder or subtree. And I NEED to access ALSO file shares (which works, but does not work when I login as admin). Does anyone have an idea? Solve : Having trouble with recovery disk? |
Answer» I had replaced the hard DRIVE on my computer and am following the instructions but after getting the computer to boot up to the flash drive, it gets a bit muddled after that. Instead of using the flash drive to boot up and re-install windows, it gives me about 4 choices of what to do. The procedure says to chose the boot drive but it lists several other choices, recovery device being one. It's amazing that procedures from Microsoft are so vague or are inaccurate or not specific enough to walk you through it. I've also considered the last factor that might be screwing it up... ME! I could use some help from anyone that's done this. I am doing this for a Windows 8, 32 bit Quote it gives me about 4 choices of what to do.I'm guessing this is something like "Continue", "Use a Device", "Troubleshoot" or "Use another operating system"? And you chose the second option, I assume? Quote The procedure says to chose the boot drive but it lists several other choices, recovery device being one.LET's SAY you have an Ace of Spades, a Queen of Clubs, and a Jack of Hearts. Now, a procedure says to "choose the ace of spades". I assume those instructions are reasonably clear. How is it relevant? well, what you are saying is sort of like saying in that situation that "the procedure says to choose the ace of spades, but there are several other choices, the Jack of Hearts being one". The instructions, after all, specifically tell you to choose the boot drive (the device you want to install to) because there are likely to be multiple options. (I assume when you say that it lists other choices you mean the boot drive/HDD you installed is listed appropriately)OK, let me myself be a little more clear. After starting the computer and clicking ESC to get it to open to the flash drive, it offers the following: Continue startup system information choose language --------------------- Diagnostics boot menu system recovery network boot utilities run vefi application I remember it saying to pick boot menu but maybe I need to pick system recovery because that's what I'm trying to do. Regardless, it gives about 5 options after that and that's where I'm not sure what to choose. I have to make a correction to my original post, the computer system is a 64 bit, not a 32.I'm not familiar with any Windows disc that presents those options, so I don't really know what you've got there. I suppose it is a manufacturer-constructed recovery disc.I have a homemade disk, I'm thinking I've gone down the wrong path and need to back up and start over. I found this procedure and it looks promising. https://www.techrepublic.com/blog/windows-and-office/be-ready-to-use-the-windows-8-recovery-drive/ Hey, I finally succeeded! After enough trial and errors, I did a fresh install of Windows 8. I'm a lot happier now that I've got my old computer up and running. When booting from a homemade disk, it gives 4 options and I picked Windows Legacy. I then proceeded to use "Troubleshoot" and eventually to "Reset". I then had to answer all kinds of questions like you would when INSTALLING a new copy of Windows. Thanks to BC_Programmer for taking the time to try and help, it's not easy working with a dummy like me.Kewl Beans...Kudos to BC... |

Answer» I'm thinking I read where Microsoft automatically inserts the activation code when running the recovery drive for Windows 8 and if so, I might be in luck. I went to locate it and the wife has stored so many warranties and stuff in our filing cabinets, it would take a major miracle to find the papers on my OLD computer. If Microsoft doesn't automatically fill in the activation code/product key, is there a way to bypass that or maybe get another one?See Here...Thanks Patio, I was hoping for better news but it is what it is.basically, with WIN8 and 10, during the installation of the OS, when prompted for your key, click the "I don't have one, I'll insert it later" and when you are finally online, Microsoft will automatically check its server and activate you if you pass its checks. Thanks Mark, I just FINISHED reading an ARTICLE stating the same and if that didn't work you could activate it over the phone. I'm pretty sure though if anything can go wrong it will. |

Solve : Batch renaming files? |

Answer» Hello, it is not really possible to offer any script ideas.Never stopped me before: Myscript.vbs ds = wscript.arguments(0) dj = wscript.arguments(1) nd = DateAdd("d", dj, ds) mm = month(nd) dd = day (nd) yyyy = year (nd) if mm < 10 then mm = "0" & mm : end if if dd < 10 then dd = "0" & dd : end if nd2 = mm & "-" & dd & "-" & yyyy dn = WeekdayName(Weekday(nd),true) wscript.echo nd2 & " " & dn In the last line, omit everything after wscript.echo nd2 if you don't want the short day name appended. Run it with cscript.exe //nologo and feed it 2 quoted parameters: the start date in the format shown, and the number of days forward you want a date to be generated. C:\>cscript //nologo myscript.vbs "01-Jan-2018" "6" 01-07-2018 Sun C:\>for /l %N in (0,1,30) do cscript //nologo myscript.vbs "01-Jan-2018" "%N" 01-01-2018 Mon 01-02-2018 Tue 01-03-2018 Wed 01-04-2018 Thu 01-05-2018 Fri 01-06-2018 Sat 01-07-2018 Sun 01-08-2018 Mon 01-09-2018 Tue 01-10-2018 Wed 01-11-2018 Thu 01-12-2018 Fri 01-13-2018 Sat 01-14-2018 Sun 01-15-2018 Mon 01-16-2018 Tue 01-17-2018 Wed 01-18-2018 Thu 01-19-2018 Fri 01-20-2018 Sat 01-21-2018 Sun 01-22-2018 Mon 01-23-2018 Tue 01-24-2018 Wed 01-25-2018 Thu 01-26-2018 Fri 01-27-2018 Sat 01-28-2018 Sun 01-29-2018 Mon 01-30-2018 Tue 01-31-2018 Wed |

Solve : icon changes by itself? |
Answer» I have a folder on my desktop that I use for my personal things. I have noticed here lately that the icon changes by itself to the same icon from one of the other folders icons that are there. I have changed it back only to have it change later. I have a habit of putting the icon for each folder in that folder. Does anyone know how to correct this? Is this a company computer or once was a company computer? Reason why I ask is that I have seen rules where changes aren't SAVED on logoff/shutdown and its because the computer was configured to dump these changes. However I have also seen where the folder icon with thumbnail IMAGE changes as a result of whatever pictures reside within the folder, if thats what your referring to. Such as my folder with digital pictures from camera as more are added and one of them is alphanumerically the top of the list in name it will then take the thumbnail focus on the folder icon. One way around this so that that doesnt change would be to name a image 0000000.jpg for say a jpg image you want to be always in view in that LITTLE thumbnail view of the folder icon. All other FILES saved there should follow that alphanumerically and so it will stop the changing as long as something isnt named in front of this alphanumerically. This is not a company computer nor has it ever been. I have an icon editor and I created this icon from scratch for this particular folder. This is the only folder that the icon changes on. It changes to one of the icons that are already displayed on the desktop. It's sort of RANDOM. I have changed it back 4 or 5 times only to have it change again. |

Solve : can't finish install? |
Answer» I was doing a reinstall, going from Windows 10 back to Windows 8. I had already formatted drive. I got busy and when I CHECKED the PC I saw that it had turned off (or so I thought). So I tried to restart it. I GET the error msg that states the install can not finish in safe mode, please restart computer. I click on enter but Zit just keeps going back to that MESSAGE in a loop. I have a set of recovery disks but I can't get them to autorun. I tried recovery but it only gives Windows 10 as an option and when I formatted those files were lost or no longer can be found. I've tried changing boot order, nothing. In theold systems I could click on F8 and msybe get out of safe mode but I can't bring up that menu. No system restore available, don't KNOW what if any dos COMMANDS might make the recovery disk autorun. I don't know how to word the right dos command. Help! |

Solve : Windows 8 Surface RT completely out of space after failed Windows 10 update? |
Answer» OK, so I have a Window's Surface (the first model that was released) and it says Windows 8 Pro on the back. It was working fine for a while but around the time when Windows 10 was being released I signed up for the update. I didn't know at the time that it didn't support Windows 10. I tried to run the update multiple TIMES, but it failed each time. Shortly after, I ran out of space on the computer. I tried deleting my apps that I didn't use and I tried the whole thing where you go to Properties of Windows (C:) and click Disk Cleanup, but that didn't do much to help. It still ranges from about 200 MB to 30 MB of free space, to the point where Google Chrome gives me alerts saying that it lost the web page because there is no memory available. I've tried looking everywhere on the internet but couldn't find anyone with the same problem. If anyone could point me in the right direction for help or advise me on what I should do so I can use my computer again I would be so grateful. If you need any more information about my problem I'd be glad to GIVE it but I'm not very computer savvy so I just tried to put everything I could THINK of into the QUESTION. Also, I don't know if this is relevant but the available space it says currently is 60.4 MB, total space being 50.5 GB, and the largest folder I could find in Windows (C:) is a folder labeled WINDOWS that takes up 41.8 GB on the disk (just plain size it says is 42.3 GB). Thanks again so much.I would check at the manuf. site or in your Manual if it has a hidden factory restore partition... That takes the device back to Day 1 status. NOTE: Everything gets wiped so you will need to backup the data you want. |

Solve : Windows Wont Start? |
Answer» I recently, moved a build out of an old Case an into a new one an had no issues with wiring it up with no real hassle. When I go to turn it on, starts up an gets stuck at the WINDOWS Boot Loader Screen an just stays there. I attempted to do a REPAIR but, it's not able to an says that the drive is locked an needs to be unlocked. I used Hiens an MARKED it as a Active Partition but, still get that error message. I can't get into Safe Mode using F8 an seems like you have to use differnt keys now. It's running a scan an repair from the Windows 8 Disc but, it don't seem to go beyond that an says 100% complete |

Any guidance would be appreciated.Members of this forum are kind of reluctant to help anybody with password issues. Don't matter what model Geek...we don't assist with it.Understood. Solve : Command prompt- altering file titles? |
Answer» HI everyone! I am brand brand new to messsing around with command prompt, though I've already accomplished a few tasks with it. I work for an office that gives us no administrative access and I can't get any additional software which makes some tasks horribly tedious. ONE project I have coming up involves adding the word "inactive" to the FRONT of thousands of PDF file names, all scattered among hundreds of folders within a single master folder. I've seen sites that suggest there is a way to use command prompt to batch prepend file names, but so far nothing I've tried has worked. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to add to the front of all of the PDF file names stored in a master folder? Basically, I have files with numerical file names like "12345" and "123654" and I NEED to rename all of the PDF's as "inactive 123456" or "inactive 123654" so that we keep the file on record but can instantly identify it as an old form that's not to be re-used. So I have a folder on my HD "form library" that's got LOTS of subfolders in it. I need to be able to rename every PDF file in all of its subfolders. Thanks for your help! AliceCan you explain more your aim with an example, i mean what did you have like folder or subfolders ? and where are located all your PDF files ? What did you expected as output name of your PDF files and so on... For example if you have a PDF file named Sample.pdf ; you want to rename it as Prefix_Sample.pdf or something else ? Your Prefix = inactive so the new name becomes like that inactive_Sample.pdf ?Here is a short batch that gives the names and paths of all PDF files. Code: [Select]DIR *.PDF /B /S >LIST.TXT The /B option gives a brief for of the path and file name. The /S option does all directories below the current. The LIST.TXT will have the list of all the files. Hi Just copy and paste this code with your notepad or notepad++ and save it as Rename_PDF_Files.bat and drag and drop your master folder over it Code: [Select]echo off Title Rename All PDF files in folder and its subfolders with drag and drop Mode con cols=75 lines=20 & color 0E set "Drag_Dir=%~1" set "Ext=pdf" set "Prefix=inactive" IF ["%Drag_Dir%"] EQU [""] Goto:Error 2>nul cd "%Drag_Dir%" && Call :RenamePDFfiles || Goto:Error pause Explorer "%Drag_Dir%" Exit ::******************************************** :RenamePDFfiles for /f "delims=" %%I in ('Dir /a-d /b /s "%Drag_Dir%\*.%Ext%" ^| findstr /I /V "%Prefix%"') do ( Rem find all pdf's with a name does not containing the characters "inactive" and rename them. echo "%Prefix% %%~nxI" Ren "%%I" "%Prefix% %%~nxI" ) Exit /b ::******************************************** :Error Mode con cols=75 lines=5 & Color 0C echo( ECHO You must drag and drop a folder on this batch program ECHO to rename all the PDF files Timeout /T 10 /NoBreak >nul Exit /b ::***************************************** |

Solve : Acer laptop takes 15 minutes or more to boot? |
Answer» Hello , i need help to figure out how to fix this super slow startup issue. This laptop takes at least 15 minutes to load before it gets to the log in SCREEN.. it was doing fine about a week ago where it would get me to login screen less than a minute before. EDIT- update on the Time jumping issueSo, is your problem solved? I hope the fresh restore doesn't include AVG...they have really gone downhill in the past few years... On top of the fact of being discovered as a data-mining component in their PACKAGE...thee1995, Do you have another PC you can Use to make a USB boot diagnostic tool that boots up an alternative OS? Here is what I MEAN: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2054425/pcs-fail-be-ready-with-the-best-boot-drive-programs.html Quote When your PC stops booting, a boot drive is the electronic version of a defibrillator. If you can boot your PC, you can detect bad memory, chase bad sectors, change passwords, and recover data ... all the things you need to get the machine back to normal. ... make the boot drives you need. Can that work for you? Quote from: soybean on December 03, 2016, 09:07:50 AM So, is your problem solved? no , the main problem which is the slow startup is still here, i'm just providing updates on what is currently happening in this laptop elsewhere to give as much information as possible, also i get windows/system/rundll32.exe error as well now for Runtime errors.. and the time jumping issue happens as frequently as once EVERY half an hour approximately Quote from: patio on December 03, 2016, 09:11:35 AM I hope the fresh restore doesn't include AVG...they have really gone downhill in the past few years... by fresh restore did you mean system restore or resetting the laptop? if u meant resetting the laptop, then no , this laptop does not come with AVG installed , it has Mcafee live security right now Quote from: Geek-9pm on December 03, 2016, 09:30:28 AM thee1995, Do you have another PC you can Use to make a USB boot diagnostic tool that boots up an alternative OS? well i havent run anything like that before so i dont have any experience on how to do it , but after i read the website , im running a chkdsk first StartupLite Download StartupLite by MalwareBytes to your Desktop. Doubleclick StartupLite.exe to launch the program. Ensure the Disable box is checked. Click Continue. A pop up message will tell you the unecessary startup items in your list have been disabled and ask you to restart your computer. Re-start your computer. boot to safe mode. How long does the boot take? Quote from: Allan on December 04, 2016, 10:59:03 AM boot to safe mode. How long does the boot take? same as normal boot , also 15 minutes or more before it gets thru the acer logo Quote from: SuperDave on December 04, 2016, 10:53:04 AM StartupLite i downloaded the program, but when i launch it , it says "no unnecessary startups found" and the continue button cant be clicked..It's not anything starting with your system. If it takes 15 minutes to get to the Acer logo it's likely a hardware problem. I suggest you run diagnostics on your ram and your hd.Still under Warranty ? ?...if so i'd demand a replacement... |

Solve : Laptop - extremly slow when booting up - no longer run OS? |
Answer» Hello there, Start by downloading either the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool or the Windows 8.1 Media Creation Tool. Once the file has downloaded, just double-click it to start the tool and then click “Yes” to give it permission to make changes to your PC. When the tool starts, click “Accept” to accept the license terms. Note that the Windows 8.1 version of the tool does not ask you to accept license terms. Here is the link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8ISO The download is about 3 GB. After download, you use a ISO burner to burn it to a BLANK DVD. Thereafter you can use it as a Windows 8.1 install DVD. Expect the download to take 45 minuets. How that is of some help for you. I know I read the article The problem is as follows At the moment the laptop is installing Windows 10 which makes me unable to do anything else. The laptop don't boot up at all. So I can't use the repair from CD feature.Another problem is I already formatted the partition where my old operating system was installed in order to install Windows 10 and the program will require Windows 8.1 CD serial number which I don't have I just want to say that I do really appreciate all the effort that you are doing in order to help me out. Thank you very much. Quote from: hamada147 on December 23, 2016, 07:39:43 PM Another problem is I already formatted the partition where my old operating system was installed in order to install Windows 10 and the program will require Windows 8.1 CD serial number which I don't have Your Win8 Key is on a sticker on the laptop...if you dont see it on the case check inside the battery compartmentOr sometimes its in the Owners manual...but with laptops it's usually a sticker...A couple of things. 1. Formatting the hard drive is not needed. The install will provide a way to re-format the drive or a partition, whatever is appropriate. 2. You can do a full install of either windows 8.1 or Windows 10 without the need to enter a product key at the time of install. It can be postponed up to 30 days. The free upgrade for regular users ended back in July. Some users can get free upgrades to Windows 10 in some special cases. But at least on on-line company offers a super cheap Windows 10 product key. The regular price is now about $60 more or less. And that is only the key, no help at all. If you buy the full pro version of Windows 10, you can downgrade to Windows 8.1 from Windows 10. But only one machine, not two on one license. Dud you get the windows 10 install to work at all? BTW: Even if you boot up in Linux, you can still download the ISO image of Windows and burn it to a DVD inside of Linux. Quote from: patio on December 23, 2016, 09:09:27 PM Your Win8 Key is on a sticker on the laptop...if you dont see it on the case check inside the battery compartment I checked every where for the serial key but came empty I asked around and was told that in order to get the laptops to an acceptable price the companies here in Egypt install the OS once with its recovery system but doesn't give the serial number which is why I can't find it anywhere. The Windows 10 installation failed for some reason or the other without any error messages I know that I need to format it in order to install a new OS so got out the Hard drive put it in a small device which reads the data from the hard drive and using a usb wire I plugged into another laptop So now I can read all the data that my hard drive has and as of now I'm copying all the data to it. Then I'm thinking of completely formatting the hard drive and all its partition then start fresh from the start like it's a new laptop. The important thing I managed to retrieve all my data. Next I will use Geek-9pm in order to format all the partitions and hopefully fix the hard drive in doing so.Once you get to the point where the PC boots from the Windows 8.1 DVD, the rest is easy. Here is a very simple tutorial that goers step-by-step. http://www.dummies.com/computers/operating-systems/windows-8/how-to-install-windows-8-1-from-a-dvd-or-usb-drive/ May I suggest that you install without the product key. It may be possible to obtain and enter a product key later. http://superuser.com/questions/498436/install-windows-8-without-a-product-key Hope this will help. |
