Quote
Suggested improvement #2: Get moar RAM
This was suggested before, but apparently money is tight.Ok thanks guys. Like always you provide a direction to go.

Makes sense to me.

BSOD.The only thing I can think of now is a software installed on your machine is causing the BSOD when TRYING to install WLM. I have a previous software installer not able to run or work after double clicking the installer icon. What I did was disabled my Antivirus(Avira) and installed it Offline. In your case, it might be ideally related. A Firewall, Antivirus or anything might be the cause. If you can specify much information on these SOFTWARES, you might be able to work around the problem if indeed you believe its only the WLM installation thats causing your BSOD. Solve : Windows Vista, slow startup/shutdown, very slow out of nowhere?

Answer»

okay i am truly sorry for the late response had to go to work im back and will work on posting everything right now like you asked. Once again i am really thankful for all your time and help! You're welcome - that's what we're here for. Let's hope we can get you back on track.i really hope so xD i have a few stupid little questions for you. well first off on this logs i have to post i downloaded the commander firewall, and its installed but its saying my defence+ is not running properly and said it was messed up during the install any idea on how to fix that? and also i am posting a few things about a couple of programs i found in my uninstall a program files i have no clue what they are or EVEN if they should be there will you help me MAKE sure they are okay? There is nothing in those instructions for Commander Firewall...did you clik the wrong LINK ?
i meant COMODO i am sorry that was my mistake in reading and spelling =[jacobey, with all the different problems you're describing, the quickest fix would be to restore the computer back to factory settings. DELL has instructions for this here:

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?&docid=DSN_336966&isLegacy=true#Issue3

This will restore the computer back to the way it was when it came out of the box. Keep in mind this will erase everything that you have saved on the computer. All of your pictures, music, etc.. will be wiped out, gone. If you have an external hard drive or a flash drive you could save some of the files that you don't want to lose before you do the restore.

You don't have to do this, but like I said, it would probably be the quickest way to get the computer back to a usable state again. If you don't want to erase everything then post your logs on the virus removal board and they will get you cleaned up. thank you jj but i have logs that i think are the problem i went to sleep last night woke up and have some logs and programs that need to be checked out. I am about to post them now thank you for the link too.

Would that be a reason for lags?Well, dxdiag says I do have 3D Accel. It says it's enabled, along with DirectDraw Acceleration and AGP Texture Acceleration. Also, I searched "nvlddmkm" on Google, and the results that popped up were pretty surprising. Alot of people using the GeForce 6600 video card are having the same problems as I am. A few people are able to fix it, but their solutions don't seem to work for others, only themselves. And on top of that, each person's solution is different than the other's. Here's one of the threads: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=38941Yeah, there has been a problem going on between Vista, and nVidia video, but I have no idea what else to advice you.I was thinking the same. From what I've seen from other people having the same problem as I have, I think I'm better off just buying a new video card. Well, thanks for all the help Broni. Solve : My Toshiba, Windows Vista is randomly shutting down.?

Answer»

Oh and I have not overclocked my computer. As I stated before in my previous post at the beginning of this thread...you can use a can of compressed air to clean the inside of your computer.

It is recommended you turn it off and disconnect all cables. Open the case...if possible...and use the compressed air to BLOW out any debris from inside the computer. DO NOT USE A VACUUM CLEANER.

Be careful around FANS...if you use compressed air around fans...you may ruin the bearings if you cause them to spin faster than they were meant to.

When cleaning...PAY close attention to dust that has a tendency to cling to heatsinks. Sometimes, compressed air will not remove the accumulation around heat sinks, because the heat has caused it to stick. Myself...I use a toothpick to gingerly loosen this dust and then compressed air to remove the loosened dust. Others may use a paintbrush...just depends on the person...or who gives you the advice.

Just be careful while working inside the computer. Protect it from ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) by wearing a wrist strap meant for this purpose...or keep yourself grounded at all times, by touching the exposed metal of the computer case.

As far as the weather goes...I was only making note that high humidity and dampness are not good for computers.take the side of the case off and blow the inside out like saviour said:) You can get a can of compressed air for about 3 or 4 dollars at radio shack. Can you hire someone to do it for you? I don't want to mess up my computer with my own clumsiness. How about going outside and using a strong fan to blow at it.A fan is blowing on it right now, we actually don't have any strong fans, the ones clearing out the flooding aren't ours.I meant instead of using a compressed air canister. Oh, ok so what should I do about the problem, is it overheating due to dirtyness? Or what?Since we cannot physically see the inside of your computer...we can't answer that question.

Based on the information you've provided us...yes, that COULD be one of the problems. The trick, here, is to rule out one probable cause...and move on to the next.

If you're not comfortable working on the inside of a computer...then you can have someone perform this for you. Once it's done...and you're still experiencing the same issue, we can move on to the next probable cause.

It appears you're not comfortable doing this due to...and I quote you...your "clumsiness"...then I highly recommend you have someone who knows a little more about computers do it for you...or take it to a PC repair shop...and have them diagnose it for you....giving you an estimate as to what it would cost to repair...

Best of luck...

Thank you all for the information. Hopefully I can get this thing fixed.Just remember where we are if you have more questions.

For example, f/w engineers use Keil C. For Windows application, someone uses Visual C++ and someone use Borland C++ Builder. I refected this issue to my boss and he admits this issue. He hopes me to work out it.
In my mind, Kiel C being used ot develp F/W is OK. But for Windows application program, the programs created by VC++ and Buiilder can not be exchanged each other. So, it's better to unify them. If Builder is the choice, that is OK. If the choice is VC++, there is another factor needs to be considered: VC++ vs. VC#. In my opinion, there are more example programs provided by Microsoft. But most sw engineers are more familiar with C.
Could you give me some ideas about the choice among Borland C++ Builder, VC++ and VC#?Either C++ or C# would be your best choices. When working a group, personal preferences have to be set aside. Anybody who has do did work in C should be able to adapt to C++ in a short time.
POS has some low-level code, but this should be in a library and the PROGRAMMERS should use the library.
If NEED be, a HYBRID approach and be used. The greater part the code can be written in any high-level language suitable for the business. Java could be a canidate . The very special things needed for the POS hardware are placed in a library and a document is made to explain how to call things from the high-level code.
In a group, your really have to document everything.

Solve : WINDOWS, COUNTERFEIT, PARTITION, DVD, HELP!!!!!!!?

Answer»

My friend bought a Dell StudioOne 19 touchscreen Desktop with Vista in 2009 (a week before all computers went windows 7). About six months pass, when she decided to have someone she knew upgrade the system to Windows 7 Ultimate.
Six months to a year later, a msg from microsoft popped up saying that the operating system she was using was not genuine and then proceeded to give options to fix the problem by buying a valid edition of windows 7. This msg kept popping up and she would angrily click the x in the top right BOX of the window to close the msg and she was angry because she realized her friend installed a shady program on her computer...
next year, her computer started running SLOWER and system errors needed to be fixed etc. So she decided that she would proceed with the instructions when the counterfeit microsoft window msg popped up again. They told her she needed to obtain a genuine version of Windows for her computer to get updates etc. So she purchased an install disc from the microsoft online conterfeit department. She was given the option to choose between different versions: Basic, Premium, or Ultimate… If she had chose the“Ultimate”Windows 7 all she would of had to do was buy it and change the (product key number?) and it would have been fine because thats the counterfit version she already had on her desktop….Windows 7“ULTIMATE.” But to save $ she chose the PREMIUM version so she had to wait for them to send her a install disk so she could setup a "genuine but downgraded" version Windows 7.
So anyways she installed it and she thought, “finally she can have this computer performing as it was when she 1st brought it home??”
WRONG!!!! Apparently it had installed this "premium" version as a "dual-boot" or "dual-partition" start-up.. So the computer started running REALLY slow and she tryed to find out whats wrong and the only thing her or myself noticed was that the D Drive was completely full!!! We tried to defragment but nothing helped so finally we tried to "uninstall" the windows version she just put in but couldnt figure it, we had someone else try to uninstall it with no luck...
And so we are back to the counterfeit "windows ultimate" that barely works and the premium version broken and on another partition!! Now it is slower than ever, the D drive is almost completely filled up, DVD Drive DOESNT work right or is maybe uninstalled, cant download very well, tons of errors, and just doesnt run right!!! We just want her computer to run as it once did when she 1st brought it home!! Is there a way we can just reset the computer to factory settings?
Previously, I had bought a windows 7 upgrade for an old laptop that had vista on it and I noticed that the disk she recieved from the "counterfeit division of Microsoft" seemed slightly different from the install disc I had used in the past. I figured it was because it was designed to fix the problem from the counterfeit state it was in.
The computer is a "All-In-One" Dell touchscreen oh and the operating system disk which originally came with it seems to have gotten scratched not sure if it works???
Also I believe this to be important… EVERYTHING Ive tried to find out about her computer online says it is a 64-bit but "fake the Windows 7 Ultimate" is a 32-bit I know they always give you 2 discs one for 64-bit and one for 32-bit so Im assuming that is pretty important to get that right but like I said… Im not sure?? I saw one website that said her dell model comes in both…
*****I guess the question is.... How does she get rid of the counterfeit partitioned Windows 7 Ultimate(the one that's working) and keep the Windows 7 premium version the (one that she cannot even get into) and how does she reinstall the DVD burner/player on the computer (I don't know hows that got uninstalled)??

Thanks,
Desperate Mayo
Quote

Is there a way we can just reset the computer to factory settings?

She can purchase this through DELL. They sell system DVD's so that the system can be rebuilt back to like new from factory with Vista.

As far as getting Windows 7 back onto the system that she purchased a licensed COPY of, she will need a original Windows 7 Disc to install from and use her purchased key when activating ( She could borrow a genuine disc from a friend and use her key with this disc vs her friends key and be perfectly legal ). Microsoft has moved on to better things in their eyes with Windows 8, so I doubt they would be very helpful in getting a Windows 7 disc.

Quote
*****I guess the question is.... How does she get rid of the counterfeit partitioned Windows 7 Ultimate(the one that's working) and keep the Windows 7 premium version the (one that she cannot even get into) and how does she reinstall the DVD burner/player on the computer (I don't know hows that got uninstalled)??

Answer is... to boot the system off of a Windows Vista or Windows 7 genuine DVD and perform a clean install which wipes out all data when it reformats the drive. This then installs the OS clean to the hard drive.Ok. so I went on this sight and it said in RED ink that you cannot install windows if your prior windows is not genuine... It turns out I only have an "upgrade" Windows 7 disk... So I still have the counterfeit windows ultimate working and the other windows 7 is somewhere else and doesn't work and I cant even get on it.
All I would like to do now is just change it back to vista... does anyone no how to do that?? I downloaded the partition wizard and it says I have a hidden partition which contains almost everything was put on there from 2009 which would be when it was bought so how can I do this???The info on using the hidden recovery partition to restore the PC will be at the manuf. site as it's differs from brand to brand...
Make sure you backup anything important as it takes the PC back to Day One status so all apps installed after that plus all your data will be gone.
If i were you after finishing i would use the #800 number provided for MS for activation issues...most likely they will issue you a new product key.

Solve : Windows 7 does not share with XP wimpy wireless.?

Answer»

My DSL router is both Ethernet and 802.11g wireless with wimpy security. Up until yesterday both my Windows XP laptop and my Windows 7 desktop COULD share files.
There was an update for Windows 7. I let it. Later found I could no more see my XP work group. Nor could I find it.

After TRYING overt and overt and over, I tried direct Ethernet from Desktop to Laptop. No problem, *censored* it now is a new network. But I can't leave it that way. The internet does not work that way. So I disabled the Ethernet adapter on the Windows 7 PC. When I want o share files, I will enable it again.

So, from the one scenario, I guess MS has upped the security requirement for using wireless to share files. That is understandable. My security is poor.

I am just going to leave it for now. But do any of you know more about this? Has MS raised the wireless security requirement for Windows 7?Have you tried simply uninstalling the update to see if it resolves the issue?CALUM, I meant to say that I did install the update and the problem began. Also, I did not make clear that my wireless is WEP. I think that Windows 7 will not allow XP computer to join the network using WEP wireless.
There is no problem using Ethernet for a direct connection from th XP laptop to the Windows 7 desktop. Si fir biw, I will just leave it that way. Maybe later I will change my wireless to a more secure protocol.

I understand. You installed the update, then the network stopped working, right? So why not try uninstalling the update, to see if the network then works again?
However, if you can use anything better than WEP, just do that - WEP is horribly insecure and I wouldn't consider using it myself. Time to come into the 21st century and switch to WPA-2!Sometimes a Win Update will simply make small changes such as turning off file and print sharing which is the default SETTING...have you checked any of these on your connections ? ?Calum, We have a WPA-2 network with some random numbers and letters as the password, and a guest account with no password for visitors. Solve : Add new font?

Answer»

Hi,
I run old dos software in windows 7 using NTVDM. It will not run full screen but if I right click on my icon - go to properties and click on "font" I can change the font which changes the size of the screen. There are 3 fonts -Consolas -Lucinda console and raster fonts. Some of these make my screen bigger but not full screen. How can I add more fonts. I am sure there is one which will do the job.
GeofflAt at this moment I am not running Windows 7. But I think the dos box fonts shou7ld be the same.

[image of my desktop running CMD on XP]
In the above, if you see it, I can make the size of at lest one font very large. I did not add any fonts, just used what was there already. Can you do that?

Yes, if I use the one you are using at size 24 the window is about 2/3 the size of the screen. At size 28 the window is full size but all the words don't FIT inside. How do you post that picture of your desktop? The DOS box should have scroll bars when nit is not full screen. I have very lo vision, so I often have to work that way. Are you able to get a size you like? I also wear 2x reading glasses and work about 10 inches from the screen.

I did a screen capture and then cropped it with a photo editor. I saved it as PNG to cut down non size. I did an FTP to my web site. Pictures I post for CH are under my CH directory. Photo bucket is just one of many.
Also, a photo can be uploaded to this forum as an attachment. Be careful about size limit. Both display size and file size. 500 by 400 looks good. At size 28 the window is full size but all the words don't fit inside. There is a bar at the bottom so you can scroll across and see the rest of the text. This is old dos stuff that runs our business. On XP it works full screen but, as time marches on, I guess we have to progress to win7. My glasses are 2.5X (maybe I am around your age) and I would like to see things as big as possible. Any ideas about adding more fonts? Why does the size of the window change when I change the font size?
Regards

Geoffl Quote from: geoffl on June 16, 2013, 05:45:31 AM
If I use the font you are using at size 24 the window is about 2/3 the size of the screen. It is on the Window Properties tab called Layout. Old Dos programs generally assume a screen 80 columns wide. What I suggest you do is make the width of the window 80 columns and the height 25 rows, and then monkey around with the font size, window width and height settings until you get somewhere, not forgetting that the maximize/restore buttons at the top right will have an effect.

Also if you uncheck "Let system position window" and set Window Position Left and Right to 0 (zero) then the window top left corner will be fixed to the top left of the screen and you can make the window grow to the right and downwards by altering the settings I have mentioned.

Don't forget to click OK after altering settings, or they won't stick.

Note: the Screen BUFFER Size width will change to reflect your Screen Width setting, and the Screen Buffer depth setting governs how far up you can scroll to see previous screen activity. Solve : Need assistance creating Windows Vista Slipstream?

Answer»

Just recently I had some clients show up with Windows Vista computers and had to perform clean installations from Windows Vista SP0 to fully patched Vista SP2. This took quite a while to perform on these lower end laptops that had Celeron 540 single-core processors. I figured that if I could install clean with a slipstream that I could save a good amount of time on rebuilds of Vista.

I have used nLite before to make Windows XP slipstreams and nLite worked perfect for XP, however to create a Vista slip stream I was directed via google to vLite. I then installed vLite and it complained that I needed to install WAIK for drivers. I downloaded WAIK for Windows XP, Vista, Server 2003 and burned the ISO to a DVD. Then attempted to install the required driver that vLite requires, but this driver is nowhere to be found on this DVD, or it is hidden under an installer executable that doesnt stand out as being the driver that is needed.

I attempted to first do this through my Windows 7 system, but found out that this can not be DONE. I saw references to people using Windows XP SP2 with vLite and being able to create a Vista Slipstream, but there was no good step by step guide on how to make it work.

So I fired up my Windows XP Pro SP3 laptop which is a Pentium III 600Mhz with 512MB RAM, which ALSO has a DVD/CD-RW drive to be able to burn a CD slipstream if it will fit on 700MB, or I could always move the ISO to a better computer with a DVD Burner to burn a DVD if slipstream is in excess of 700MB, and I installed vLite. I then attempted to install WAIK off of the DVD and I attempted installing features off of the DVD just to see if one of them had this driver bundled with them for creating the virtual environment that vLite needs to function. Even attempted to install the Windows Server 2003 utility to see if that was XP supported but not indicated in the GUI of the menu screen, but it stated that it was for Win server 2003 when I tried to execute it.

Looking deeper online I found many people then running into issues trying to get WAIK to work with vLite and I was hoping I'd find a link to this driver on one of the pages which would make vLite function under Windows XP on this old laptop so I could move forward into making the Vista slip stream for Vista 32 SP2 and Vista 64 SP2 since I have both Discs.

Has anyone here created a Vista Slipstream and if so, how did you make it, what was needed etc?

ThanksPerhaps the WAIK DLoad in This Link... will produce better results...Thanks for the very helpful link Patio.... one thing that jumped out at me is this...

Quote

MSDN and TechNet Plus members can download a pre-integrated ISO image of Windows Vista SP1 and SP2. Just download this file and burn your “slipstreamed” Vista SP2 install disk.

Unfortunately though both memberships are more expensive than I am willing to pay. As for it would take many installs before the return on INVESTMENT would pay off the membership just to get my hands on the pre-integrated ISOs.

Also this stood out as a surprise to me that I didnt see mentioned elsewhere...

Quote
•3+ hours to integrate SP1 and SP2 into Windows Vista x86 and 4+ hours to integrate SP1 and SP2 into Windows Vista x64

I was hoping I'd be able to make one of these in less than 1/2 the time stated. I guess for now I will finish up with their computers vs wasting time with a DELIVERY deadline to meet for clean installs. I already have the service packs downloaded and can install them quickly off of a DVD, but a slipstream/pre-integrated ISO would have been faster if fast to make up.

Will dig into making this pre-integrated ISO of each when I have some spare time to tinker with this.

The biggest clarification though from TechRepublic is that its an involved process, takes a good amount of time to make each one, and I need to install Vista on the system with 2 partitions, 1 for the system to boot off of and the other to be used for the pre-integrated ISO creation!

Also I now know that the Pentium III 600Mhz Laptop with 512MB RAM will not work for making this, so I am going to have to use a different computer to build this from. I guess I will dig my project testing box, a Pentium E5400 out from under my desk where it has sat for 18 months and use this box with 2GB RAM and 160GB HDD to make these ISOs. Vista System Requirements link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919183

Solve : ASUS laptop problems urgent help needed.?

Answer»

I had a few a lot of problems with malware recently. Well quite honestly I don't know what it was. I was in school and super busy so I didn't bother checking what the problem was. I ran a malwarebytes scan a few times and nothing popped up, then I tried an anti virus scan from avast and avira but those didn't find anything either. Unfortunately in the mean time my computer was getting slower and slower. Until it was completely unresponsive. It would boot up fine, but once I logged in I couldn't do anything it simply froze. Then it got worse. I tried running it in safe mode and doing a scan from avast I believe. Then have this pre boot up scan OPTION which I figured would be best. I didn't realize the scan would take more than 4 hours; because I'm a computer newbie so I tried fixing it on my own... Then everything went to *censored*. I don't really know what I pressed but my brother typed something into a command prompt box before boot up in "safety mode with command prompt"and that brought up a system recovery option. I figured he knew what he was doing, although I wasn't to pleased about returning my asus to factory settings. Unfortunately the recovery wizard keeps prompting me that it can't recover due to some files being corrupt. The worst part is that I didn't create a recovery disk when I got my laptop. I feel like such a dumbass.

Anyway, now whenever I turn on the laptop ( ASUS model R500V) it shows a black screen that says "Windows is Loading Files" above a gray stripe running across the screen. Then it GOES into a funky blue ASUS background with various command prompt boxes in which I can't type in. They say that "Disk 0 is now the selected disk" "Partition 4 is the selected partition" Then it goes into a Recovery Wizard. Which tells me to pick between recovery OPTIONS. None of them actually make the recovery successful as all lead to a windows error box saying that some file is corrupt. That message then LEADS to a huge red Error sign on a white screen.

What do I do? Answer»

Computer Specs: Windows 7 SP1 Professional 64-bit, Gigabyte Intel Z77 GA-Z77X-UD5H Motherboard, Intel Core i7-3770K Quad-Core Processor 3.5 GHz, 14GB RAM, Nvidia Geforce GTX 570, Corsair Neutron Series GTX 120GB SSD, Western Digital 1.5 TB WD15EARS HDD, Samsung SH-B123L 12x Blu-ray disc combo drive, and a Corsair Enthusiast Series 850-Watt power supply. I'm using a bootable USB instead of a Windows CD. Havn't installed my Virus software yet.

Hi all,
I recently switched Windows from my HDD (1.5TB) to my new SSD! I decided to back-up everything to an external hard drive and go ahead with a clean install of Windows 7 Pro (x64) onto the SSD. Well I've done all of that, updated all of my drivers, and transferred all of my files/excetra back to my computer using the SSD as the drive that holds windows/Users/and all of the basics, and my HDD holding everything else. My problem is that upon boot up of my computer, I have to go through an aggravating PROCESS to get it to START! When I turn it on, it shows my Motherboard screen for a few seconds (like it should), but then goes to a black screen with a blinking underscore for like 5 minutes before it shows "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". I'll press Enter and then it will load my SSD and windows will start up like normal and all is good with the world. But the whole point of my getting an SSD was to cut my startup time by a lot, not add an annoying 5 minute wait. What do I do to fix this? Thank you in advance! Try changing the boot order in your BIOS so the SSD is the first disk (With the exception of DVD/USB drives if you want to boot them automatically), this will hopefully solve the problem. What I presume is happening is that it's seeing a boot sector on your old hard drive and trying to boot that (which it can't) and then giving up.I've already tried changing the order. The SSD is set to boot first, and I've even tried manually booting it by PRESSING F12 during the BIOS screen and choosing the SSD. Both with the same result. Even disconnecting everything but the SSD still leads to the same result. It's frustrating Have you checked if there is a firmware update for the SSD or a BIOS update for your motherboard? Is the SSD in an Intel SATA port, not an add-on like Marvell or Asmedia?Try moving the 1.5TB SATA connector to SATA 3 or higher on the MBoard...Just checked for the firmware, and they have not released any yet for the Corsair Neutron Series SSD. And both my 1.5TB and SSD's Sata connectors are in the Sata 3 SLOTS :/I meant the # of the slots...that's what designates which drives try to boot at startup...You sir, are awesome! Where I had them plugged in was in slots 0 and 1, but I guess I had the number assignment backwards and had my SSD plugged in 1 instead of 0, so I switched them around and now its working properly!!! YES!!! Thank you!!! And thank you to everyone else that helped as well! Good to hear you are fixed up...Welcome Aboard.

Solve : Browsers won't load any pages! PLEASE HELP!!?

Answer»

I've been searching for a week now and still haven't found a solution to my problem.. I'm beyond frustrated

So here's my issue..

About a week AGO, my internet went down in the area. I didn't realize it was the whole area at first, I though it was just something wrong with our household internet so I unplugged and plugged our router back in [which has always worked before when we had an issue in the house] but no luck.

My PS3 was telling me it was a DNS error so I went to my router configuration and reset all the settings. Keep in mind I really don't know too much about all this stuff so I just try things I know how to do and see if it works, haha

So the next morning, I found out the internet was down in our area. That afternoon it was working again but I still couldn't connect so my brother unplugged, and plugged the modem back in and voila! it worked again.

Only problem was that half of my browsers would not load pages. IE worked, and so did Firefox.. but Flock and Opera would not connect. It was telling me it couldn't connect to remote server. I tried to install the beta of google chrome, but it said it couldn't connect to the internet to install it. And I downloaded the Windows version of Safari.. not LOADING any pages

I've searched google endlessly and done everything that people have said would work, and still nothing. Last night I updated Firefox, which was working.. but after the update it won't load any pages!! So it seems that any newly updated, or downloaded browsers are not working.

Pleeeeeease someone help me!! I would be sooooo so so appreciative!

I'm on Windows Vista Home Premium, and have turned off my firewall. I'm at a point now where I'm considering just formatting my computer. I wish I could "downgrade" to Windows XP, but unfortunately I have a newer laptop, and they don't have drivers for XP

Thanks
SarahTurn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run, type in:
cmd
Click OK.

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run, type in:
cmd
Click OK.

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and check again.Take a look at your router. Is it set to get the DNS server from your cable company? Check for typos in the IP if you had to set it up manually.

What you are discribing sounds LIKE your router has the wrong info about the DNS server it is trying to use. Your machines maybe storing the DNS IP.

check your settings on your router
reboot your modem
reboot your router
reboot your machine.
Let us know how this works for you...
Thank you both for the quick responses! Unfortunately, after trying all of those solutions, still no good. I called my brother this afternoon, he used to be pretty good with computers, and asked him if he had any other suggestions. He told me to uninstall any recent Windows updates and restart so I did that. Still didn't work. I downloaded a program called "CCleaner" which supposedly deleted any unecessary files and fixed any issues in my registry. Restarted. STILL not working.

So at this point I had finally decided that I would just format. Then I realized I can't format bc my laptop was preinstalled with Vista, so I don't have an actual Vista disc to reinstall it after formatting. *sigh*

I feel like I've tried pretty much everything. Both my brother and I are are completely confused as to why this would happen. Most places say it's probably a DNS error, but my brother said it wouldn't be a DNS error if internet explorer is still working. Is that true? I don't know.. he knows more about all this than me.

I'm contemplating sending it in to a local computer shop.. but I really don't have the money to do that. I'm not sure how much something like that would cost me.. I guess it would depend?Your laptop, most likely came with recovery partition, and maybe recovery DVD can be created.
What brand, and model is it?It's a Sony Vaio VGN-NR120EHow to access your recovery partition, look below:

[recovering DISK space -- attachment deleted by admin]Thank you!! Solve : Save, save as and open - details and ordering?

Answer»

Probable memory lapse here -
I am sure way back I managed on last PC to set things up so my default listing display in ''save'', ''save as'' or ''open'' was 'details - last modified'. Very often I want to see my last save and most recent file ..... and not have to select 'details' then punch the 'last modified' top bar!!

Any thoughts? I can't remember if and how!Wait a sec. I even don't understand what you're saying.Let me try again!

If I go to save, save as or open a file - the listing of existing files is either default alpha-numeric - or on occasions random. So it might start at ''a'' and on thru ''z'' etc .... folders first then files.

If I use the icon "view menu" I can select "thumbnails", "tiles', ''icons'', "list" or ''details''. I am sure I used to have a way to set default so it showed as ''details'' every time ... and with ''last modified'' showing first. Right now i have to go thru setting this up every time I go to save, open etc.

In Win Explorer if this was used in a folder it'll hold that option for the next viewing.

I often need to see my files in date order rather than name and so a default I choose that will enable this every time is useful.

If still no idea what I am rambling on about - no sweat - it's hardly life-threatening! But I am just frustrated as I am sure I used to set this up as a chosen default! Quote

If I go to save, save as or open a file - the listing of existing files is either default alpha-numeric
Where? I'm really trying to understand...LOLOh dear!!!

OK - let's imagine you have written a small txt file - you go to ''save as'' - what do you see?

I see a listing of folders and files which are usually (if lucky) an ordered list according to alpha-numeric. ''A-file.txt'' will APPEAR first and maybe ''zulu.txt'' will appear last - if I scroll across or down.

However - as I might often be wishing to save repeats of a new file - like ''newfile-01.txt - then newfile-02.txt etc ... it helps if I see my files listing as I want - which is the first to show being the ''last modified'' - and so I select it - change the 01 to 02 and off I go again! (lazy approach).

I also often want only to see my last save - so again the ''last modified'' showing as default is desirable - without having to make selections specially.

Don't worry - I might post a coupla screen grabs later to try and explain better.

C'mmon, Chris, you know better than this:
Quote
OK - let's imagine you have written a small txt file - you go to ''save as'' - what do you see?
In what program? Every program is different. Quote
In what program? If not it would be necessary to somehow subclass the dialog and set the listview style to Details- in addition to messing with the columnheaders...

I think I'll look into this, I have a feeling their likely is a registry setting that might help with this.
Hmmm - could be that I am using Windows Classic for my set up. This must be confusing the issue - sorry - had not considered the (yuk) XP 'look'..

I hate XP visuals - and so am set up looking pretty much like Win 2k.

OK - here are grabs from an OLD folder ........ so - folders appear first in listing - then alpha numeric listing of files. From the top right icon I can elect to show details - and then will see as second pic - with option to select the ''date modified". I am wanting to keep that setting as a default.

Sorry about confusion - you gotta think back to the look of '98 and Win 2k ..... should have specified this.

BC_ - see you just POSTED - yes I would expect a setting to be app specific and - sure I used to have a way to do it!!

[recovering disk space -- attachment deleted by admin]OK, this?

Well yeah - but my version!

The top right icon - get a list of files - not just folders - and select ''details'' and then punch the ''date modified'' bar - twice actually to bring latest file to top.

That is what I want to set as default.Got YA now....Let's see, if we can do something about it.For now, I found out, that the sort order is controlled by ShellState key in:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
Default hex value of that key is:
24,00,00,00,33,80,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,0d,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
but that's probably as far as I'm able to go, unless I'll find some more info. The above is from XP. On the third try it loaded. After many attempts to load drivers and other software I thought that may be the Sony DVD was bad and changed it out. No joy, same thing nothing will load to the program. Oh, in the paper work that came with the motherboard I was told that if I wasn't going to load Vista I had to change SATA to IDE in BIOS. I did that be for I started to load XP. I decided to try and load vista to see if it would work. Vista loaded but it wouldn't start up. I did a repair from the disk and now most things seem to work. One thing that is wrong is I use a program that is called Net Waiting it wont work or let me uninstall it. I use it on the other computers and it works with them and they have Vista. I don't understand why XP wont work on this computer or why Net Waiting wont work with Vista on this computer. I relay wonted to use XP on this computer I mean I already paid for it. If I have to keep Vista on it I will have to go pick up a new copy be for the 30 days are up. This computer is meant to be a Media PC for our travail trailer. I have a WinTV card to install after I decide the way to go. Any thoughts on what is wrong or how to fix it?If XP is what you want on there i suggest doing a full format of the drive and booting to the XP CD and performing a clean install...
Make sure to visit all your manuf. sites and collect the drivers for XP especially the MBoard drivers.
These should be installed first right after installing XP...That was the problem. After installing XP it wouldn't let me install the drivers. I went to intel and got drivers for the BOARD. I first tried to install them from the intel CD. Thanks for your reply.why would it not let you install drivers ? ?

Is this a real XP CD or a copy ? ?I bought it, it is not a copy. After loading xp it wouldn't let me load the drivers from the intel CD. I don't know why that is why I am asking for help. How are you trying to get the drivers?

Also, just to be clear, what drivers are you trying to look for?The drivers came with the motherboard from intel on a CD. I also down loaded drivers from the intel site on to a CD. I did that be for I installed Vista. It took so long to get this WORKING I really don't know if I wont to change it now. In less you guys can give me a reason why it didn't work the first time. I feel at this point I am stuck with Vista. I like Vista my self. It is just I bought XP be for I ever tried Vista. I like XP and have used it for years. That is why I bought it. I guess what I am trying to say is that I really wouldn't care witch one I use except for the expense and I really don't wont to have to buy Vista when I already have XP.I'm not exactly sure but, if you installed Vista over XP because of drivers, then you could probably find those missing drivers online at the manufacturers website.Carbon I am not looking for drivers. I have the drivers. I am looking for some one to explain why XP would not let me load the drivers or for that mater any other programs after I got it installed. Was it just a bad install. If I try it again will I have problems. It is my understanding that the install should only take about 2 hours It took me 6 hours to get Vista installed.could be that there not xp compadiable. Never messed with vista myself. But did you download the right ONES for the os you want to use?The drivers that came from Intel should be compatible with XP. The ones I down loaded from Intel are according to the site. It wasn't just the drivers that wouldn't load. XP wouldn't let me load Earthlink or any other software. There would be 3 sets of drivers for what you have tried so far for that MBoard....
Windows Media Center
Windows XP
Windows Vista.

One set of drivers will not work for all 3 so i think you're managing to get the driver sets mixed up somehow...Patio, I have the CD that came with the motherboard. I down loaded from Intel the drivers for Windows XP Media Center all of them were the same for Windows XP from what they say on there site. I used the CD from Intel after loading Vista and it worked. When I had XP media Center loaded it would not load any thing from a CD. Not the drivers, not Intel not any thing. A box would come up and ask what I wonted to use to open the disk with. I went into computer and clicked on DVD drive and clicked on setup and no joy. Nothing would load. That was when I changed the DVD recorder, thinking it might be bad. That didn't work. The same thing happened. I then thought I would try and load Vista. 6 hours later I had a working OS. It hung mid way through the install and I had to go into repair computer and that took care of it. The only program that wont work on it now is Net Waiting. I can't get to work or uninstall, it is just there. I don't think that the drivers are the problem. I think some thing went wrong on the install of XP Media Center that prevented any thing from being loaded. I don't really know or I wouldn't be bothering you people about it. I guess that I will try one more time to load Windows XP Media Center and see how that goes. So as far as any one knows on here there is no reason for XP Media Center not to work on my motherboard?
Just wonted to drop you all a line to let you know what happened. I tried to install Windows XP Media Center in the new unit again yesterday. It didn't work. The why of it is that when I was asked for the SP2 disk it would not read that disk or the SP3 disk. I don't know what that is about. Any way when you click cancel and go on with the load when you get to the desk top and try to load it there you get. SRCLIENT.Dll was not found. When you try to load the drivers you get Error Code :oxeoooo227. After 4 tries I gave up and loaded XP Professional SP2 and every thing went well. The drivers loaded and all is fine. So I will stick with that. I don't know what I am going to do with Widows XP Media Center. I guess that I will have to get a hold of Microsoft and see what they say.
