Solve : Tapping F8 key, computer does not go into safe mode?

Answer»

Is there a known GOOD working keyboard that you can test your pc with?

It would be unusual for the F8 key to GO bad, considering it's not used that often, but it is worth a SHOT.

Solve : Computer acting strange?

Answer»

Ok thanks I didn't even think about that but I have had my computer 3 years now, so I dunno if they would do it or not.Tell them that if they do not want to then they are in direct violation of the Liscensing Agreement they signed with Microsoft when they decided to SHIP machines without a Windows CD...

This usually gets their attention.Ok well I just got off of the emachines support site and the lady I talked to TOLD me to do a system restore and I told her what I told you guys(but I tried again anyway) to do it and when it wouldn't work I told her that and she said the only thing to do was to do a full system restore and do this
http://support.gateway.com/s/SOFTWARE/Medialess/MLXPMC0/MLXPMC0su14.shtml

Should I do that (I don't want to cuz I don't wanna lose all I have downloaded the good stuff anyway) or should I just ask for the windows XP CD and do what was said above before redoing it to factory restore? Again thanks for all the advice.

EDIT: Also another thing about the problems im having is everytime my AVG antivirus does its scan it keeps getting more and more stuff to scan on it. The other day when I was installing and uninstalling stuff you guys had asked me to try it actually got it down to 700 something items to scan but now it is back over 800 again almost 900 and I haven't downloaded anything else. Would that be something to do with the spyware I had that maybe is still there.According to the link you included, the current data will be moved to C:\backup.  Applications will need to be reinstalled, but "the good stuff you downloaded" should still be there.  This might be the fastest way to GET your system back to a stable state.

IMO, you should still get a restoration disc from eMachines.  USE the line patio mentioned.     If your hard drive ever dies you'll be left without an operating system.

Ok I apologize once more but I have one last question(yes I am procrastinating I just hate having to redo things) my bookmarks will be gone along with Firefox won't they? Since I downloaded firefox after I got the computer.Open Firefox, Click Bookmarks, Organize Bookmarks, Export.  Save the Export so some sort of removable storage (USB drive, CD-R, whatever)

Solve : When playing mpg or avi files, PC 'bluescreens' and shuts off, serious error msg?

Answer»

BSOD could also be from a bad driver.

Does the BSOD reference a driver name, like something.sys?  Ok, the problem is today solved! yay. Thought I'd log in and update this topic in case someone else needs it.

Turns out it was an issue with Microsoft Runtime libraries not being current.

It wasn't overheating. I had the AMD chip up to 68c during a warm SPELL and there was not a problem, no crashing UNLESS I again tried a vid file, so I eliminated overheating.

I entered the Event Viewer after the last crash and found an error message relating to this - VC80.MFCLOC - being missing. GOOGLED it, came up with MANY possible causes but the most common was the MS Runtime Libraries needed to be installed or updated.

Visit

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9B2DA534-3E03-4391-8A4D-074B9F2BC1BF&displaylang=en

to download and INSTALL the latest 2008 Runtime components. As soon as this was updated, no more crashing...

Thanks all for your posts! off to watch holiday vids...

Wonderful
Thanks for posting back, and watch those temps anyway.

Solve : Advice wanted on partitioning a hard drive?

Answer»

Salutations,

Again, a big THANKS to everyone who helped me out.

I now have my hard drive PARTITIONED as I had hoped and am back online blasting along at  24 Kbps on my dialup connection.

I did read Eldergeek and indeed have turned to him on several occasions in time past.  Special thanks to JJ300 for a nice simple runthrough.  Worked without a hitch.

Last question regarding my reload of XP:  Should I order the SP2 CD and attempt to load SP2? I have heard conflicting advice on this issue.  Some folks say it can cause a host of headaches and problems.  Any advice greatly appreciated.

Gracias,
sampI HIGHLY recommend you get SP2 and INSTALL it.  Since you've just performed a fresh installation of Windows XP, now is the best time to install SP2.  Some of the PEOPLE who complained of problems - a very small percentage of the total population of SP2 installations, by the way - probably had some malware or other unknown problems in their systems before installing SP2 and that may have caused the problems they encountered after installing SP2.  In other words, installing SP2 on a clean system is the ideal situation.SP2 is highly recommended...it was touted as a security fix when in reality it was a major upgrade to the OS...Heh... XP has moved onto SP3'

Not sure what all it does. But I know if Explorer.exe crashes it restarts it automaticaly. I dont think that happens pre SP3.

errr.... that's happened since windows 98, actually.... Quote

But he will need SP2 FIRST to install SP3....Just saying dont stop at SP3 unless someone have a better reason.

Also I know of several programs that will not run on your comp unless you have SP2 installed.

Solve : Serious memory leak, explorer/system?

Answer»

Malware-wise, the log looks clean.

Couple more suggestions...

1. I'd uninstall AVG, which BECAME quiet a hog. Switch to something lighter, like Avast, or Avira. If you decide to do so, make sure, you use AVG Remover: http://www.avg.com/download-tools

2. Uninstall Spybot altogether, or at least permanently disable TeaTimer, which is known for hogging computers.

3. You need to update Java:
Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder

  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.
Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

4. You have unnecessary startups, so for me to see them better...

Download HijackThis:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download
by clicking on Download HijackThis Installer
Install, and run it.
Post HijackTHis log.
Do NOT attempt to fix anything!

Ok, I'll take care of it come morning; I can't stand teatimer, never was installed with spybot, I'll take care of AVG, and I have used HJT before, so I know what to look for, just only got rid of infected BS that the virus(s) left. And I'm thinking java may have been the culprit, I remember I got the infection right after using a java web page...I saw TeaTimer running.
You can safely uninstall whole Spybot. It's a tool of the past anyway.

Odd, I opted out for teatimer. SuperAntiSpyware it is then. It did the memory leak a couple minutes AGO, it was going about 30K/second on explorer and nothing was showing up right on the taskbar or anything. Restart FIXED it fine.Free version of Superantispyware doesn't give you real time protection, so when you install it, make sure, it's not installed as a startup.
Check HJT, and you may see TWO entries, one O4 (startup), and one O20 (service).
Disable both.I finally said "F" it, I couldn't even get explorer to load properly, kept crashing so I started over. I'm using different set ups with more security so this kind of thing doesn't HAPPEN. That and stop using the thing for more than a server comp. Thnx again guys! You're welcome
Don't forget to get mote RAM.Money is a little tight, just bough a terabyte hdd too for my media center, was getting a little full on the 320    But definitely is coming up

As Carbon said:
Reseat RAM. If you have more than one stick, try one at a time.
If you have only one RAM stick, and reseating doesn't help, run memtest: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic62524.html

yes i have tried that and it has 3 sticks of ramWhat did you try? Reseating? Trying them one-by-one?took one out, started the comp, took another out started the comp, and non of them worked i tried taking them out and putting it back in, still didn't work. =[I just Google a little, and it looks like there are plenty of possibilities for that error, but it's a bed time here, so I'll be back tomorrow, but for good night, you can check one interesting reading: http://icrontic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50966

LOL it's only 10:30 pm!!

ok well anyways i'll try to reseat the RAM one more time and if that doesn't work, my dad will be taking it to a tech...

I'll update you guys asap if anything happens

Thanks for ALL your help

once again THANKS!

Tranc3rWhat are the specs on all 3 sticks of RAM ? ?
Download and run MemTest on each stick seperately.
Let it run at least an hour.
Any errors at all and you have faulty RAM...Ok, occording to the tech, he said the problem isn't the RAM, it's functioning properly, he tested it them on another computer.

Well that's what my dad told me, LAST night we were trying to fix the comp until like 2 am, then my dad told me to go to sleep, and he'll TAKE it to someone and it'll be fixed, and he left the house at 2 am, i have NO idea where he took it but the next day when i woke up, the computer wasn't there i asked my dad where was it and he said its at the tech and i asked him well what did the tech say was the problem? he said there was somthing wrong the HDD and he booted it, well he really didn't give me much of an explanation, but I REALLY REALLY wanted to go with him and see what the tech did and ask him more information, =[. and im not 100% sure of it's working or  if it stopped restarting until i have it.

well that's all I have left to tell you.

I was a little disappointed that I couldn't go with him! =[Keep us updated...do you have another pc running xp? you could just throw the working pc's hd in your pc as a master. run yours as a slave, and try to fix the problem that way. if you can fix the problem, at least then you could back up files and re install xp on ur drive. Quote from: h0w on August 24, 2008, 04:07:06 PM
if you can fix the problem

lol dude we have NO idea what the problem is!!

and Yes I will keep you updated so if anyone else has the same problem you guys can add this as a possible fixture.Err... I just REMEMBERED I had to update this!

It seemed that the computer's Registry was FUBAR'd and there was no other option but to reformat the computer. We got a new HDD so now the computer has two HDD. 'The old HDD's Windows folder was completely destroyed' <--- Straight from the tech (This time I was there). Thank fully the old HDD's memory wasn't destroyed with the Windows folder. Now the computer is running on the New HDD and I was able to retrieve important documents from the old HDD. Along with that, we got three year subscription to Kaspersky  for 2 computers (My dad's and my brothers [I do not need one because I am careful of what I do with my computer]).

Sorry again for the one year late reply, but I couldn't have let this thread be left alone WITHOUT an answer!

*Needed to edit Kaspersky*Wow! It took you a while....LOL
Thanks anyway hey trancer remember me? i was the one who had the same problem as yours..

well i sought the help of a friend..here's what we did..

we placed my hard disk on another pc..upon boot, the pc automatically did a check disc..then after it loads to windows..we scanned it with antivirus..then ran an error-check..to do this..go to MY COMPUTER then right click on the drive letter of the hard disk, go to TOOLS tab, then click Check Now on ERROR CHECKING..check BOTH options..then wait for it to finish..

after we've scanned at check for errors..i plugged ib back to my pc and guess what

i was able to boot in successfully..i first booted to SAFE MODE..then scanned it again just to make sure..a virus scan that is..then after that i logged on to windows normally..

hope my reply will be HELPFUL to those in the future Awesome!

Solve : Registry can not load the hive.?

Answer»

Quote from: bigal50 on February 28, 2010, 10:41:11 PM

Ive serached for my docs and pictures and they are GONE !!!!!

How did you search? random clicking through folder windows, or did you actually use the search tools that windows provides? if so, what criteria did you specify?

Allow me to re-iterate: renaming two registry files will NOT delete an entire folder tree.

What happened was that replacing the registry files meant that the HKEY_USERS hive now contained different users the it did- possibly with different user names. Either way, the point is, they had different "My Documents" folders.

Your current Account is using a empty My Documents folder created when you rebooted.

Your previous "my documents" folder is still sitting in C:\Documents And Settings\.Ok my apologies. I was  just a littel freaked out......but I found a folders with all my data. Pics, doc, Internet favorites, music etc.   So how do I get everything back in place the way it was.

When I booted I got a message that read:

Hpqthb08.exe .netframework intialization ERROR
please set registry key HKLM\software\microsoft\.netframe\installroot to point to the .net framework install locator

Does this have something to do with the issues Im am having with the data not being seeing in the RIGHT places.

Again, sorry for my rude behavior. I was just a little freak out an mad at my self for not doing back ups. If I get all this fixed I am going to back up everything ASAP!!!!!

Your data is still there. The registry replacement you made CANNOT delete user data files, only applications.Ok seems everything is there but is it possible to get things back the way they were or am i just going  drag and drop things to the new user ?

Right now I am saving whatever I can on to my usb drives for now.I told you right off the bat I could help get you back up and running but all previously installed apps would need to be reinstalled. Nothing has changed. Thanks for you help, Allan !!!!!   I will figure it out and install my applications.

But now when I boot my pc I get this message that reads:

Hpqthb08.exe .netframework intialization error
please set registry key HKLM\software\microsoft\.netframe\installroot to point to the .net framework install locator.

Whats that all about.

Start by reinstalling two things:
1) the latest .net framework software and
2) the driver for your HP printerSounds good. But where to i get  this .net frame software. Quote from: bigal50 on March 04, 2010, 12:03:41 AM
Sounds good. But where to i get  this .net frame software.

.NET framework.

From what I can tell hpqthb08 looks like it uses a relatively early version of the .NET framework: (1.1) Note that .NET framework versions are not backwards compatible- you can't  install Version 3.5 and have a PROGRAM compiled against the 1.1 runtime work.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=262D25E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displaylang=en

You can find other versions there, as well.

However- all that being said- the "hpqthb08" program is really more or less part of the cruft that HP plops on all their machines. you can remove it without any ill effects, and you will not get the message at startup, by using MSConfig:

Start->Run, type msconfig and enter.

On the "startup" tab, unselect the item that starts the program- it should have hpqthb08 somewhere in the line.

Apply, Exit, and restart your PC.

With all due respect to BC, please do NOT use msconfig to permanently alter startup items. Instead, you can download a simple utility like Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel and use that to manage startup apps. Simply uncheck the offending PROCESS. http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml Quote from: Allan on March 04, 2010, 05:38:35 AM

Ahh. Figured you had a reason
And while I agree utilities such as Autoruns are better for you and me, Startup Control Panel is nice and simple for the "average user"   But if the OP is good with Autoruns then that's great.Ok I did the Start/run/msconfig -thing and unchecked the hpqthbo8.exe thing and now i dont see see the .netframe error mesages. Cool, Thanks.

But now I'm having problems connecting to certan websites.  Some tell me I need Active-X?!
Others time i get a message the says my security setting dont allow me to view this sight.
Other time i click on a link and an internet explorer window opens and nothing loads. the screen stays white. Also everytime I try to save a website as a favorite i get a message the read something like Cant not save the file " Website name" catastropic failure.

Im sure all this has to to with my system crashing a few weeks ago when I had to recover by using the copy sytem32/ commads ( excuse me for not remebering the exact commands. but maybe like all my applicationsthat that i had to relaod my internet options have to be reset

Thanks in advance. You gave have been great......

I already have all the programs you have in your signature. As I said before in this post, I downloaded all of the ones on the site I MENTIONED before.

Ewido, AVG, CWShredder, CCleaner, Ad-aware, spybot search & destroy, and kerio PERSONAL firewall. You may have them but are you running them in realtime?Well they all show up in my system tray ICON thing and if I right click it says "turn off real time protection?"So what's running in that tray?
Don't just say 'everything', give us the list?Pardon me.

Ewido, AVG, and Kerio.

Not sure if the others can be enabled to run real time.Turn Ewido off, it will die in 30 days anyway.
Activate the SpyBot Teatimer.
Activate Realtime protection in Microsoft Antispyware. Can't use the Microsoft one because it tells me my product key or whatever is incorrect.Update them all & don't FORGET to imunise in SpyBot.
Learn how to get the most out of your programs.
Read the help files. Set AVG to scan all files.

Once again patio, Bc, Allan cos some one has a go you do not like it. well FU lot

If you'll look closely, neither one of us started this post. it was started by somebody else. Not us. the fact that somebody from reimage even responded to this thread at all is rather curious, and that was my main point. Same with the previous thread. Not sure what you mean by "some one has a go". If you're going to try to get into a debate like this PERHAPS you should bring some semi-intelligent arguments, like rebuttals to the other sides arguments that actually respond to the arguments presented instead of saying "FU Lot" and presenting backwards logic where a member does more on their site then any of us do which is pretty simple logic since a good number of us don't even have accounts at his site and therefore we couldn't really do anything there, as well as the fact that being the administrator of said site it only makes perfect sense that he be doing the most for it.

All that said, I thing Quantos summarized it far better then I ever could.

Just so you know, the member you are speaking to was banned the other night for trolling.ganjaman is not Treval but he has been re-banned by Nathan. I also banned him from Tweaks for posting vile, curse laden attacks against both me and America.I've really enjoyed both of the threads pertaining to REIMAGE that Broni has been an INTEGRAL part of. The second bloke (founder?) seemed a fair bit more clued up than the first from 2 yrs ago, which is probably why he didn't stay for the full 12 rounds like the first, not quite as PUNCH drunk..... yet.

Anyways while I was poring over the multitude of responses to the software it reminded me of software being advertised here in Australia that could have been its identical twin "FinallyFast". Among other errors they actually advertised with a MAC laptop blue screening (I know, they could have been running Windows on it, but an unlikely probability). They too used scare tactics as a way of promoting their product, which of course was a repair all elixir.

I don't know, it seems there are many that promise the world for those willing to pay that fall far short of the mark. In my BOOKS thats theft no matter how good the intention.

Sorry for necromancing the subject, I just couldn't help myself.Bye bye.

Tracked it down and it is located at "C\Documents and Settings\E. Jean Ruport\Local Settings\Temp\~nsu.tmp\Bu .exe"

The first TIME I checked with Online Armor, I am sure the exe was "Au .exe."

Also, The infection on April 24 that AVG found was "TROJAN HorseDropper.Generic2.CKX" in "C:\Documents and settings\E. Jean Ruport\Desktop\a  .exe"

I find this SUSPICIOUS!

I checked it with AVG and MBAM but it showed clean in both.

As I am not able to get to Anti Virus sites on Internet Explorer could you please investigate this for me.

The OP didn't say anything about trying to impress anybody.

Indeed, just as I wasn't trying to "impress" my girlfriend when I showed her how to do it (type accented characters with a Gringo keyboard using Alt + the KEYPAD). She was doing a language course involving Italian, French and Spanish and we didn't really want to buy a special keyboard. Also she found a Web page of just about every accented CHARACTER and used to copy and paste them into documents. Once you have them in a document once, further instances can be copied direct from their earlier APPEARANCES.

Finally, we realised that if you are using MS Word, you can install the RELEVANT language and just type with un-accented characters. If you have "check spelling as you type" enabled Word will underline in red the words needing alteration and suggest the proper accented version when you right click them, like here:

The puppy linux OS would be enough for testing purposes http://www.winhelp.us/recover-files-using-puppy-linux.html?#.UEmYsJZca0RI found information on Puppy Linux and downloaded two versions and neither would load. I GOT error and install would not complete. I have not posted my issue on Puppy site forum yet, I will do that. You need to follow the instructions and create a CD. Then, you boot from the CD you created.I downloaded ISO version for CD and burned to CD using NERO Burn Image to Disc option. That should do it. The real test will be to see if the computer boots from the disk.I have been trying to boot from disc with puppy linux with no luck. I have been on Puppy forum and got many suggestions but nothing has worked. I have even tried booting without hard drive.

I am about to give up, unless someone has ANOTHER suggestion that might help me.  I really appreciate all the help so FAR and I am very disappointed that so far I have not been able provided satisfaction to those that have chipped in with advice.Did you enter the BIOS and set the CD/DVD rom as 1st boot device ? ?
When doing so the last step is to "press F10 to save changes and exit"...Yes I am well aware of how to do that and I have been booting form the cp with Puppy linux, but can't get it to load. You may have to burn the puppy Linux to a fresh CD and TRY again.
Once in awhile any CD might  not boot for some unknown reason.

I had returned to the configuration I described (SELECTIVE start up with all, I think, ticked) I shall over a period of time, try booting up as you describe (selective, boxes unticked), to identify and eliminate the problem.  This will take a while because my old PC has problems booting up (I've started getting CPU fan failure messages, although I have a brand new startech fan, and this evening either my PC or monitor has lost RED [unplugging monitor shows RGB band with 'no signal' warning though...now I suspect {hope ?} it's my graphics card....].  this in addition to simple failure to boot, a long standing problem)

Your suggestion might make sense if the same thing didn't HAPPEN with Firefox and there weren't other issues as reported in the first post in this thread.
It does make sense. It works that way. The infection is in the current user account for all browsers in stalled. Also, he can install a virgin browser and the problem goes away. (A virgin browser is one that has not been on the system. I don't know how else to say that.)Wrong...
Even if a new browser is installed on an infected PC it'll still exhibit the same slowdowns...

I was not aware that onboard video is called a video card.
In reply #41 I stated that I had also tried to run without the video card.
In reply #42 you suggested that I try another video card.

From my point of VIEW there is no inconsistency since I have no other card.

As I have no idea what you or others would consider PERTINENT information I would appreciate to hear what other information should have been supplied. Quote from: Arno on November 21, 2010, 01:03:18 PM

I was not aware that onboard video is called a video card.

Neither was I. On board video chipset, maybe.

A final wrap up.
After a few more trials the re booting started in the middle of booting for a continuous loop.

As a stop gap I got myself a $70 off lease IBM ThinkCentre 8142 which uses PCI slots so I could not use the AGP video card but could replace the 256 MB memory with the two 1GM DDR400 sticks from the OLD machine.

Apologies to Computer_Commando. Reading the detailed online IBM manual they do refer to the on board video as a video card.

Using the HDD from the condemned machine as a slave I was able to get most of my data off that disk.
Couple of days ago it started to take a couple of minutes before opening a file with Windows Explorer and yesterday morning it stated that the disk is not formatted.

I will start a new thread to FIND out if there is a WAY to get the data off there after all.

Thanks to all who have helped.

And yet work it does.

So which is it?

If it's a disk for Dell computers, I would bet you won't be able to reinstall Windows from the disk. It will look at the system you have, realize that it's not a Dell computer, and refuse to install. If YOU no what to do:then take the bios BAT out and flip it.and place it back in the holder.now replace it..you now have a clean bios..now TRY to boot..does it pass post...Ignore the above post. Solve : Remove Temporary Program Files?

Answer»

If you never hear from me again, you'll know that it didn't work.  lol.  Gonna dump them all and SEE what happens. ThanksRockey - If you're reading this then all went well and you will have your pc under control.

Post back pleaseOhhh Rockey - you've got me worried - please don't say I've stuffed you like a turkey.

Post back please!!!!Dusty - All's well.  So far everything is working.  Just busy here.  temp is empty.Rockey - that's the best news since sliced bread.  Now you will have the confidence to delete .temp files again.

I think you are running Internet Explorer.  If that's fact there is another file which you should delete occasionally.  When you surf the net IE puts an entry into a file of every site you visit.  This file just increases in size ad nauseum.  Try to locate the file:

C:\WINDOWS\HISTORY\HISTORY.IE5\INDEX.DAT

(or something close to that but must be Index.dat) and delete it.  Note that it's History.IE5 even if you are running IE.6). When I first cottoned onto this one it was over 8Mb & had entries going back almost two years..

ALL index.dat files can be deleted but you MIGHT have to do so in Safe mode.

I was having a beer and the penny dropped that you are using Win.98se whereas I was quoting the file name from XP.   The file above is 98se and cannot be accessed from Windows but can be from Dos so just restart in Dos and all will be ok.  Mebbe you'd like to check the file size before deleting (dir it).  I've edited this post.

Good luck, I enjoyed our little exchange

Dusty-Not sure I am qualified to go into DOS.  I might really mess something up.  I know how to GET there but I might never get out of there.  I am not gonna venture there today.  Busy here.Rockey - OK - enjoy yourself.Just thought people may want to know a little shortcut I have on my PC. Open up Notepad (Start > Accessories > Notepad) or any other text-editor, then go to File > Open. Make sure you are looking at All Files in the lowermost dropdown box, and then navigate to the c:\ drive. Open up Autoexec.bat and add this line:
Code: [Select]deltree /y c:\windows\temp\ >nul
This simply clears the Temp folder every TIME you start your PC. The "/y" switch simply confirms every "Do you want to Delete?" prompt and the ">nul" just stops screeds of text appearing. Code: [Select]deltree /y c:\windows\temp\ >nul

You are aware that this will cause problems with program installs that reboot the PC? These PROGRAMS usually load stuff into the c:\windows\temp directory with intent to use them on the restart, and are then supposed to clean up after themselves (few do) once the install is complete.

Better idea is to build a .bat file that you can put on the desktop or in your System Tools subfolder in Accessories on the All Programs menu, and have that include things like emptying the temp directory, history, cache, and/or recycle bin directories. Another thing is to remake the folders you DELTREE'd, for example the above code line should be accompanied:

Code: [Select]deltree /y c:\windows\temp\ >nul:
md c:\windows\temp

This prevents the system from stumbling on an absent environment object next time a temp file is made...

Solve : NTLDR? RAM? Can't seem to figure it out.?

Alright. I managed to use that site to create a disc that lets me use the Windows Recovery Console. The first command i entered was chkdsk, and it told me the drive could not be checked. I rewrote the bootsector, and was about to fix the Master boot record with fixmbr and this popped up:

**CAUTION**

This computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid master boot record.
FIXMBR may damage your partition tables if you proceed
This could cause all the partitions on the current hard disk to become inaccessible.
If you are not having problems accessing your drive,  do not continue.

I wasn't sure about that, and so brought it to you guys. What should I do concerning the MBR?

As for creating a disc that contains NTLDR, Ntdetect.com, and boot.ini, I'll do that next once I find the appropriate files and maybe a guide.

Edit: I've been reading that this Caution from the Recov Console is a sign of a bad MBR, and that fixing it fixes many problems. I just don't know if it's MY problem. Quote from: MegamanXZOBMV on June 08, 2010, 03:51:47 PM

There is one more thing that concerns me, and I don't want to waste another thread for it. Before the computer was fixed, it would boot up to that black screen with the grey/white underscore cursor and stay there. You said in the original post:  "we swapped the burnt Asus Radeon card with a Nvidia GeForce 8500GT".  Likely, that is the difference.  Without knowing the exact make & model of the card, there's nothing else to say, except that it's a Sony Vaio, which tend to use non-standard components.I see. Modern HDD are near indestructible.( Except the cheap ones I get.)

The only thing on a hard drive that NEEDS to be destroyed in order to hide the "evidence" is the internal media within the drive...not the whole drive.  The data is stored on this media magnetically. A very strong magnet can wipe a hard drive clean.

If you want to make sure you totally destroy the evidence (of course you'll ruin the drive), why not just open the drive...remove the magnet media and magnetize/shred/burn it.

CUBA!!

In the USA only people are MPAA for movies and RIAA for music (ya right like they will do anything)
And then the only way to get busted for programs and such is for the FBI to get a tip from someone.  But I doubt they would do anything either.  They are too busy to worry about that.  I think anyways

Quote

we got a lead on one of america's most wanted murderers, but this guy called todd wants to turn himself in for downloading some vanilla ice".

"Tell todd to go away- and find better taste in music while he's at it."

"what about the murderer?"

"well, I feel like a few more games of ping pong, so if we lose him just make up something about his cunning evasive manuevers or something. Also say he kept throwing bunches of kittens tied together at their tails at us. That always gets the publics goat when the fugitive uses kittens."

"Don't you feel kind of bad getting the public to do our work?"

"why would I? it's either that, or we don't play ping pong. I'm not ready to give up ping pong, *censored*.

But, I think the RIAA sued a few people, got mass negative publicity(which one would tend to get in their situation, you know, especially after sueing people that don't own a computer...) , and kind of slinked off.

Additionally- it isn't really the hard drive your trying to destroy, but rather the data. destroying the hard drive itself is simply a means to the end. Of course the optimal technique would be to take out the platters and mail them to relatives as decorative coasters, which would cause anybody trying to re-constitute your data on a indiana jones like adventure, assuming of course all your relatives have houses filled with booby traps and keep decorative coasters on a pedestal with a bright light shining down from above that when removed subsequently causes a collapse of the basic STRUCTURE of their house. Like my aunt matilda, thats where she keeps her gilligans island memorabilia. Apparently everybody is out to get it or something. She was widowed after poor old Uncle Greg fell down the bottomless pit.

Not sure of what your question is.
If you have pirated software, stop using it.
At some point, reformat the hard drive an do a full install of all your legal software. Break off any connection you have with pirate groups. Don't even look and email they send you. Change your email address. Any personal information you gave to a pirate can harm you later on.

Pirates are not good friends. They only serve selfish interest, not the freedom they brag about. Never, ever trust them. As you run away from them, look over your SHOULDER.

Also, they are predominantly upper class junior high-school kids who could easily afford the programs in question but find it far "cooler" to use their 37337 HAX0R skillz to get them for free. Of course it's really just a google search away and requires no skill at all, but they live in a social bubble, and if I was to burst it, the poor fellow would need to get a grip on reality before falling down the gaping chasm that is drug use and anti-social behaviour. Or something to that effect.

besides, who what's to dislike about pirates? Sure, I'd rather not sail with them, but They can be peacable in bars and so forth, as long as your pet woodpecker doesn't start pecking at their wooden appendages (these are pirates, after all, on the high seas)
Always preferred the term 'Buccaneer' myself.I don't believe microwaving a HDD would erase the data at all...
Probably ruin the microwave before it would the HDD.

Another quick question - or should I ask it someplace else?  I have Norton on my computer, but is it necessary with all the things MICROSOFT already has in place and if so, what all do I need of Norton's products?  Or is there a better program for the money?
In my opinion, Norton is COMPLETE rubbish.  I would remove Norton completely (if you have Norton Ghost, you will need to reinstall it) and replace it with a free program such as Avast! or AVG (USE only one!).  Not only are these programs free, they also provide much better protection.OK, great - does Norton need to be removed prior to installing one of the other programs?  And do they FILTER out spam, etc as well?  I am not at all happy with Norton. You don't have to remove Norton first, but I would suggest doing so.  I don't believe these other programs have spam filters (I don't use the e-mail features, so I'm not 100% sure), but you could use a program such as Spamihilator.

As for the dust, yeah that's what I EXPECTED, the fan.

Any other suggestions for removing it?Blow it out any way you can.
These are nice.
Hi

I am not sure if dust can really slow your PC. But one way or the other, it's GOOD to clean them out. Dust always finds its way to anywhere!

Perhaps you need to look into your harddrive. Use scandisk (or chkdsk.) and don't forget to cleanup the registry, because if you have too much junks left in the registry, it will slow down your PC.

Hope this help.

KBTW, FORGOT to mention, most softwares are really sloppy, when you uninstall softwares they always left a trail of junks behind in the registry, over a period of time, your registry is pilling up with unwanted data and slows down the PC. There is a very good freeware you can down load from CNET, it's call RegClean. Just delete every piece of unneeded junk. You can also download SystemMechinic a trial version, not a freeware, It can defrag the registry.

Is this a standard response to fixmbr?
Caution
This computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid master boot record,
FIXMBR may damage your partition tales if you proceed.
This could cause all the partitions on the current hard disc to become inaccessible.
If you are not having problems accessing your drive, do not continue.
Are you sure you want to write a new MBR?
No, not a "Standard Response".  However, since you have previously received the message:  "The Volume Appears To Contain One or More Unrecoverable Problems", that's likely what it's referring to.  Since you are having problems, I would continue.  Since it's not working, you have nothing to lose, except maybe the Ubutu boot loader, which you would have to resolve later.  I know nothing about Ubuntu.Fixmbr and fixboot were successful. When I restarted I got this message...

ntldr is missing. PRESS any key to restart.  (have not seen this before)

then after restarting:

pxe-e61 media test failure, check cable
pxe-m0f:exiting pxe rom
operating SYSTEM not found.   (had seen this prior to fixmbr and fixboot)

Tried Ubuntu, I can access what is referred to as 18.1 GB media .(properties call it vfat (FAT12)
The items inside are unopenable documents that have what look like word logos. and are called different letters of the alphabet. I tried copying them ONTO the hard drive and this did not work

My question is.

Are these my work?
If so, what has happened to them?
And can I get them back to normal?

Ok. Ive just plugged the hard drive into my home comp. And I can access F, which was giving me the I/O error before. However there is nothing in there. Is it possible that fixmbr or fixboot could have WIPED my work? Getting a bit worried now. Update:
Checked properties of F. Used space - 2.93 mb. Free 7.16 mb- so it hasnt wiped everything (or anything?) But why are the contents invisible? The Ship is Sunk
You probably lost everything.  Reinstall OS and programs.  Make sure you have all original CD's and/or drivers.
You keep no backups of your work?
You torpedoed yourself.
I keep triple backups on different media.

If conventional wisdom fails, try TestDisk data recovery.  It can be invoked from different media and different operating systems (including Windows XP).

It is also available within SystemRescueCd.
FixMBR is not a fix for lost data. It fixes a damaged MBR. Not likely to be the problem.
As patio said, do NOT use a USB adapter. They are wimpy at best.

You want to convert from 2.5 IDE to the standard 3.5 IDE connector. That way you can slave it in your desktop and see what there is to see.

Solve : VMM32.VXD  - not found?

Answer»

Buenos dias doctor!

Well, well of course it did NOT work. I have the windows 98 CD and my smart computer that is mad at me for deleting things I shouldn't have done, won't run it. All it says is that Vmm32.VXD not found.

Is there something I can type in manually to start running the CD??

Ohhh what have I done?

Thanx doc,

BeaOK.  Is that the Windows XP CD or the Windows 98 CD that you have?

If it is the Windows 98 CD, you may boot from a startup floppy disk, choose the option to enable CD-ROM support, then type D: and press ENTER.  Then, put the Windows 98 CD in the CD-ROM drive and type setup and press ENTER.

If that does not work, just let one of us know.

Buenos dias!

Hola Doc!
No, nothing happens when I put in the CD. Well, actually yes, it says could not find VMM32.VXD and VMM32.VXD is neccessary to start windows 98 ... it does not read the CD and does not ask me anything about it. It sounds like it wants to run it though! And also, when I start the computer (no dics inside) it shows the Windows 98 front page and then it goes away and that message comes that VMM.32.VXD was not found.

Is there any hope left??? I hope so...

Thankssssssssss,
BeatrizUuups, I forgot to answer that it is a windows 98 CD NOT xp. I also do not have the floppy disc to boot from. I am not sure which one you mean...Beatriz:

OK, not to worry!

There are two things you may try:

A. You may be able to enter the BIOS setup of your computer and change the boot-order setting to boot to the CD drive before the hard drive.  To do this, look for a message that appears on the monitor with you first start the computer that says something like, "Press F2 to enter setup..."  Once you get into the BIOS setup, do NOT change any setting except the boot order.  Then save the changes by pressing the F10 or some other key and exit the BIOS setup.  Then put the Windows CD in the drive and restart the computer by pressing CTRL, ALT, DEL.

B. You may download a boot disk and use it to start your computer. Just go to this site:

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

Then click on the link to download a Windows Me OEM boot disk and save it to a floppy disk.  Then, put the floppy in your computer and turn it on.  When asked what you want to do, choose the option to start the computer with CD-ROM support.  Then, change to the directory of the CD drive (as i SHOWED you earlier) and type setup and press ENTER.  That should do it.

Let one of us know if you need more help.

DocBeatriz:

Here are Microsoft's instructions for installing Windows 98 with a boot disk:

How to Install Windows 98

1. Insert the Windows 98 Startup disk in the floppy disk drive, and then restart your computer.

2. When the Windows 98 Startup menu is displayed, choose the Start computer with CD-ROM support option, and then press ENTER.

3. If CD-ROM support is provided by the generic drivers on the Startup disk, you receive one of the following messages, where X is the drive letter that is assigned to your CD-ROM drive:

Drive X: = Driver MSCD001
Drive X: = Driver OEMCD001

NOTE: If your CD-ROM drive is not available after you boot from the Windows 98 Startup disk, install the CD-ROM drivers that are included with your CD-ROM drive. For information about how to obtain and install the most current driver for your CD-ROM drive, view the documentation that is included with your device, or contact your hardware manufacturer.

4. Insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive, type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER

X:\setup

where X is the drive letter that is assigned to your CD-ROM drive.

5. When you receive the following message, press ENTER, and then follow the instructions on the screen to complete the Setup procedure:
Please wait while the Setup initializes. Setup is now going to perform a routine check on your system. To continue press Enter.

The instructions and other info. are found here:

Regards,
DocDoc,
no, the problem is that I do not have a start up disc. All I have is a windows 98 CD!!! Is this the end of it? My gosh, I can't believe what I have done. Again, I turn on the computer and it tells me that I am missing VMM32.VXD. If I type D: it won't do it (if that is something that makes sense, anyways. I thought if I do that it goes to the CD Rom). I am helpless, I know. I also don't receive an automatic reminder that you have written me back although I clicked it. That's why it takes me longer because I thought you hadn't written back yet. Aghh, YEAH and if I start the computer with the CD in it, it doesn't read it. I am having the feeling that I need that floppy reboot disk I don't have and this is the end of what you can do for me.  :-/ Doc,
sorry I just saw that you had written another email how to get the boot disc. Sorry, about that. I will get that boot disk thing done tomorrow and let you know how that went.
Thanks as always so much!Beatriz:

No problem!

The Windows Me OEM or the Windows 98 SE OEM will both support your CD drive.  You may download either one from bootdisk.com.

Let us know how it goes amigo!

DocDoc, can Beatriz run SFC on a '98 from DOS without a '98 CD? (I have totally forgotten what is possible with SFC on '98 )

Bea, is this an XP upgrade CD or a full version of XP with SP2? What are the hardware specifications like on the PC, processor, RAM and hard drive size?

I just finished this on another forum. maybe it wil be of use to you.

"You should boot directly to the Windows XP CD and to make this easy I use OLDBIOS.EXE
which works for new BIOS's as well.

If you download both of these bootdisk images to a hard drive and make one floppy bootdisk for each of them by double-clicking on them you will have adequate means
of doing what you want to do.

DELPART BOOTDISK & OLDBIOS BOOTDISK

When it is made just put the OLDBIOS bootdisk in the A: drive and the Windows XP CD in the CD-ROM drive and re-boot. You need to press any key to boot to the CD and then Windows XP setup should load. (Make sure that the XP CD has SP2 and that it is really clean. I GENTLY wash the CDs in luke-warm water with two drops of soap solution and gently dry them with a clean linen cloth so that there is less danger of read errors.)

You then choose to install XP and have to press F8 to agree to the EULA. When the next screen appears you will have the chance to delete old partitions and make new ones. You should then format drive partition C: and format any other partitions using XP's Disk Management.

If the XP CD does not have SP2 then use AutoStreamer 1·0 to slipstream the core files from the XP CD together with the updated files from SP2. AutoStreamer will make you an .ISO file from which to burn an XP SP2 CD and you then use this CD and not the original to do the installing. (Chose to burn a CD-ROM(ISO) in your burning program.)(I use NERO for this job.)

I install to a 10240Mb (10 Gb) drive C: and partition the drive in such a way that ALL data can be kept on other partitions to make backing up data easier.

Partitioning also means that it is also easier to make a drive image of the C: drive partition when all of the installing and updating is finished so you can use the drive image CDRs (or data DVDs) to restore the entire system in about 30 minutes should anything go wrong in the future.

Useful programs for XP include ERUNT which makes a backup registry automatically, CCLeaner to remove all junk files after installing, Disk Cleanup to remove old system restore points before imaging, and EmpTemp which will remove old system restore information in .old files.

You should also add the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service from MS which speeds up the shut-down time and makes start-up easier too.

If the old partitions will not delete using the XP CD then use the DELPART bootdisk (wxpboot.exe) to delete them.

To do this you need to boot to the Delpart bootdisk and at the prompt type: A:\>dir , (press enter) to see the list of directories. Then type: A:\>cd , delpart (press enter) to change to the DELPART directory and finally type: A:\>DELPART>delpart , (press enter) , to start the Delpart program. Delete the partitions in reverse order finishing up on the Primary drive C: (You need to press the DEL key when using delpart to delete partitions.)

Mac:

Yep! i ran System File Checker (SFC) myself on one of my Windows 98 SE systems not too long ago.  It didn't ask me for the CD, that is, not until i prompted it to replace one of the files it found.  So the CD is essential to actually replace missing system files.

Not sure if SFC may be run from the command prompt.  If it can, then it *may* work.  However, i have a strong HUNCH from Beatriz's earlier posts that she deleted the SYSTEM folder.  That's why i've suggested she reinstall Windows 98 SE.

About Windows XP, you may have missed the post where she said she was mistaken when she said she has the XP installation CD and that she only has the 98 CD.

Neat trick that OLDBIOS boot disk!  I'm going to check out that link.

Take it easy!
Doc
<--- Thinks, "Man, it's getting hot in this topic!  Did someone turn up the heat?"

<--- is wondering how Beatriz is doingMy gosh you guys...thank you all. I am being very busy these days and can't find to fix that stupid computer and I just checked what I dummie have to do next and are you guys kidding me??? I printed it all out and with a bottle of wine I will TRY to follow these steps. I think the computer hates me and does not cooperate. CD forget that, won't take that at all. So I will try these 3 mio floppy discs seems like the only thing that *censored* thing likes. Seems like this case really has gotten hot - love to see all these men trying to help me, haha! You guys don't know how clueless I am and therefore thank you so much. Ha, we have time until September when Uni STARTS again, so no time pressure, haha!

Alright amigos,
I'll be back with an update, if I don't throw that thing out of the window, on the weekend.

Yours,
Beatriz Oh and doctore,
you were wondering how I am doing...well the last thingy you told me to do before this got all heated didn't work. I forgot what it is called, that boot disc you recommended me to download. I downloaded it, but nothing happens...

So, I will try all the other things now and get back to you. Thanks doc!

Solve : Windows XP stalls for 10mins on startup?

Answer»

Hi all.

I've got a problem the A-team can't even solve!

Ok, I'm currently running Windows WP Professional (SP2) together with an Athlon 2600XP, 128mb Geforce 440MX g/card and 256mb of RAM. Now when I boot up it gets to the welcome page fine then up pops my wallpaper ready for my desktop to appear (icons and all that). However once the background picture appears it stays on that for about 10-15mins and only then does my desktop appear. It kinda springs into life! It's so annoying! My PC works fine after that and shuts down at an acceptable speed.

Now to remedy this I've already formatted my hard drive and performed a clean install twice. I dunno what the answer could be. Is it a windows thing? Is it a hardware conflict (Surely not as it works fine after install)? Is there files missing or settings that need updating?

Also when it's hanging on the background picture, when I go into Task Manager it just SAYS that the system is basically idle so it's not exactly being overloaded with info before the desktop appears either!

I'm really confused on this one and would like to think that there is one person who knows the answer to this or who has experienced the same problem as me! (I've trawled many a page of this forum looking to see if I could FIND a problem similar and I couldn't so maybe this is a new one on ya?)

Thanks a lot.

Any USB devices connected?  If, yes, disconnect them.  Computer has a NIC card?  Unplug and see what happens.  Check NIC drivers, you may need to download newer ones.Hi,

Thanks fr replying. I've not got any USB devices connected no and as for a NIC card. What's one of them? If it's a network card, there's one built in? Is that what you mean?

Thanks.NIC = Network Interface Card.

Network Card HelpMany machines made for XP Professional business use come with motherboards that hold 4 x 1024Mb RAM modules and are supplied with at least 1 x 1024Mb module.

So with only 256Mb of RAM I can say, quite DEFINITELY, that you are way low on RAM and probably have a huge paging file.

More RAM = less paging file. So I would MAX out your computer's RAM.

512Mb is really a minimum for XP Pro if you are doing anything serious.

A couple of weeks ago I added 256Mb to an XP machine with only 256Mb less 64Mb video inclusive, so only 192Mb.

Now with 448Mb of RAM the computer performs much better, but then it has a slow drive speed ...

Maybe your icon cache is corrupt ... ?maybe you need to disabled some starup services have a look here>http://www.blackviper.com/WIN2K/servicecfg.htmA couple of things to check if you are running on NTFS. If you have converted from FAT32 you can get 512 byte clusters instead of 4096 byte clusters. This willl slow things down appreciably.

To check this, open a DOS window (in Windows) and type chkdsk, and in the read-out you should see:

"4096 bytes in each allocation unit"

If it says "512 bytes in each allocation unit" then you need to re-format.

If your Master File Table is fragmented this will also slow you down.

Formatting directly to NTFS should prevent this from happening, but if it is fragmented and you have 4096 byte clusters on NTFS then you should use Diskeeper 8 Professional (not Home, the Professional version can be used on XP Home & Professional) and schedule a boot-time defragmentation checking the BOXES to run chkdsk and to defragment the MFT.

Hope that is of help. Quote

Solve : CD drive - M drive is not accessib?

Answer»

I'm TRYING to do a simple COPY and paste of a powerpoint presentation.

I'm trying to copy the presentation from my harddrive (C) drive to my CD drive (M).  I have a zip drive in my (D) drive.

I get this message:
M:\ is not accessible.  The device is not ready.

Please help me "make it ready".  I've tried systems/performance/file system and re-booting several times.

Please help.  It "should" be a simple copy and paste.
Thank you.You can't just copy and paste files to your CD writer from Explorer. You need to use software such as Nero or if you want a free utility TRY Deepburner (Google for it).
That function is only avaible in WINDOWS XP.

If you have Windows XP installed, donot try to save your Power Point presentation to your M: station, but drop and drag it.

Be certain that the CD you are using is completely EMPTY. Using software such as Nero can verify wheter it's empty or not for you.

You may need to download the Imapi update from Windows Update.maybe windows media player 9/10will do it>http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/using/productdoc/en/default.asp?url=/windowsxp/home/using/productdoc/en/player_overview_formats.asp   it also contains burning software...

Solve : Im having freezing problems...help please!?

Answer»

Hi, im having problems with my computer, it doesnt just freeze like permanatly.  It freezes in sequences, like for instance ill move my mouse from one side of the screen to the other, and it will stop like 4 times in SEQUENCE, i DONT understand, sometimes the computer just runs normally and i dont have this problem. Can anyone help me!! update graphics drivers....what mouse are you using and what operating system......."Sometimes"? As in "every 5 mins"? Or "Everytime I'm using my DV editing software while playing an Unreal Tournament deathmatch over the internet?"

Basically I'm saying that it sounds as if this only occurs when the PC is being strained. This happens on most people's PCs,  and the only two things you can do is upgrade the hardware or try to close programs down after yourself.Scan for viruses, trojans and spyware.

Better maintain your PC:

  • Defragment harddrives/partitions
  • remove redundant files
  • Cleanse registry
  • uninstall programs no longer needed

Remove dust from the inside of the case that may be affecting performance.

Computer Cleaning Informationso dust can make my computer freeze in sequence? No im not playing video games on itDoesn't matter wheter you play videogames or not.

If you have not cleaned your PC case for a long time then it is very likely that a lot of dust is preventing your CPU fan or any other type of fan/heatsink from doing it's job properly. How do u clean registry? With a program such as Advanced System Optimizer V2When was the last time you ran Defrag and ScanDisc?
Try that and see if it works.  A lot of times Win98 problems can be solved SIMPLY by doing a shutdown and restart three times in a ROW.

Solve : Clock losing time?

Answer»

Has anyone ever had the problem of your system losing time ? I record shows daily on Musicmatch Jukebox and sometimes i lose them due to the fact that my system clock losing time by say,,, three hours,, this happens on occasion and it has always been a problem for me,, anyone have any ideas on how to correct this ?Scan for viruses, trojans and spyware. Your CMOS battery may require replacement.

If this only affects the WINDOWS clock; double click on the clock, press the 'time' tab and see if it is properly configured when it is attempting to synchronize.

Computer CMOS informationGet a freeware time adjuster which reads from one of the many internet sites devoted to suppliying nuclear time.I think what you meant to say was 'atomic' not 'nuclear'. Ofcourse,  Canadians have always been a bit strange.. Are all your clocks irradiated?Joleen.....LOL , it seems the gauntlet has been dropped again........."Only in Canada you say".......eh

You know, there are actually websites who pay you to post 'm.

As for SJRick, did you solve your problem? I don't think LOOKING at Joleen's nudies will solve anything.Well for now it seems to work ok,, but time will tell ,, it always seems to HAPPEN when i dont want it to,, so I will let you guys know,,

by the way,, since i have you all riveted to this post,, let me ask another hardware question,,

I just bought a KVM switch and was wondering if anyone knows of anything that i can use to share a set of speakers as well,, i dont think using a simple splitter from Radio Shack will do the trick due to the interference,, was just curious if anyone has any ideas. You may wish to replace the CMOS battery before it decides to fail. How old is your mainboard? The board isnt two yrs old,, it should last much longer then that.,, considering the size of it,,  but like I said,, i will wait and see what happens,, time will tell,  pun intendedMy mainboard is less than a year old and allready I have a dodgy CMOS battery. The most common cause of a PC clock losing time is due to the battery needing to be replaced.Batteries have a shelf-life. So if they use a four year old battery in the manufacture you can expect to get one years use from it.

A new one is not expensive.

Solve : Kernal.32.DLL error on Internet Explorer?

Answer»

When I SIGN on the Internet and the Home Page comes up this error appears suddenly and ask you to either send or not send a report to Microsoft. No matter what you click it will not let you access the internet or remove this error message.

Any thoughts on how to fix or get rid of this error on IE. Thje computer is a Dell the operating system is Windows 98.

ThanksOpen Internet Explorer Options in the control panel and delete your home page URL.

To open IE click on the Windows Update link on your Start Menu and see if it will connect with the Windows update site.

If your system needs updating then is the time to do it.Mac this did not work. I got the same error message when I tried to connect to Windows update. This computer is being used by my daughter in College and only happens when trying to connect to her high SPEED service. When she brought it home our dial up service worked FINE. Any other options?Double check your connection settings. It will be different for dial up and lan. But your best option is to deep six IE and get another browser such Mozilla or Firefox. I'd bet this IE6. Though it sometimes works on W9x, it is problematic. IE6 doesn't like W9x.Not sure if connection settings is a problem since i can get Home Page to come up. Error arrives shortly after. Will try this though. How do you deep six IE6 and add Firefox? What steps need to be taken? Thanks Quote

Hello Burly, Sounds like something is identifying your browser to me. A Trojan or Hijacker. But only on the LAN/DSL connection.

Try running SpyBot SD, AdAware SE, and SpywareBlaster. (I also use AVG Free edition anti-virus and the free Edition of Zone Alarm.)

All programs are freeware and I use them all even on XP Professional.

You may get a situation where one of the anti-trojan programs damages the winsock if there is a Trojan interfering with it. The cure is to uninstall and re-install the DUN (Dial-Up-Networking) in Windows Components under Add-Remove programs.

One of the main reasons why '98/98se "doesn't like" IE6 is that IE6 is a bigger program and most '98s need more RAM for todays internet use.

You can easily find it a struggle using 64Mb (way too low) 128Mb (barely sufficient) but when you go up to 192Mb or 256Mb things start to get better.

Another thing which can slow down '98 is cluster size. If the defrag is painfully slow (you should use the defrag.exe from ME, btw, or Raxco's PerfectDisk, or Diskeeper for 9x) then check to see the cluster size by running chkdsk in a DOS window.

The default cluster size for FAT32 on drives under 8·0Gb is 4096 bytes, but '98 can work much better on 8192 byte clusters.

You would have to re-install if that is the case and force the bigger cluster size by using:

A:\>format c: /Z:16

With XP using format /fs:ntfs gives you 4096 byte clusters anyway on all drive sizes, but you cannot use NTFS for '98. (BTW)

The real answer is to upgrade to XP Home if the computer is compatible as XP's architecture gives a LOT more in the way of system resources.

I see XP Home on offer at US$69.99

http://www.buysoftware.ws/pd_microsoft_windows.cfm.

But do the PC Pitstop compatibility test if you are thinking of going this route and beware the media descriptor problem which can make older floppies unreadable.

The cure is to format new floppies in an XP machine and copy the old floppies to them in a '98 or ME machine.

Also try adding Delindex.bat from www.burzurq.com to her bootdiskette and running it from the prompt in case there is something in the TEMP or Temporary Internet files folders affecting the connection, a bad .js script or somesuch.

A:\>delindex , and press Enter to read the screens and R to run delindex.

Here is some more info on these errors: http://aumha.org/a/kernel32.htm

Another problem with IE6 is upgrading from IE 5·5.

It is better in my opinion to remove IE 5·5/IE6 completely and start over with a clean install of IE6.

The IE6 download is bigger than for other operating systems as it includes components need for '98, so INSTALLING from a CD is not always a good idea.

I use a special means of downloading IE for specific Operating Systems in particular languages:

(NOTE !!! Set up a DOWNLOAD Folder at C:\DOWNLOAD first of all !!!)

The file ie6setup.exe is specific to the operating system AND is ... ALSO ... language specific.

You have to START by downloading ie6setup.exe for YOUR operating system & LANGUAGE into the C:\Download folder.

(You can do this for other Operating Systems on other computers if you burn the entire program to a CD-R or CD-RW.)

The C:\DOWNLOAD folder HAS to be opened to FULL screen before typing the download command into the Run window.

1./ Download the IE6 SP1 Installer from the MAIN WINDOWS DOWNLOAD site:
   http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en IE6SPI DOWNLOAD

2./ Choose the language which you require at the right side of the page.

3./ Download the installer (APPROX. 480+Kb) into the: C:\DOWNLOAD folder, and open the folder to  FULL window.

4./ Go to Start> Run>: cut & paste this line into the Run window, then press OK

      C:\Download\ie6setup.exe /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E"""

5./ In the download window which appears, choose the operating system which you want to put IE6 SP1 onto and choose the:
C:\DOWNLOAD path, in the top window, then press enter.

All of the IE6 SP1 cabinet files will now download into this folder and you can then either install, or burn to CD.

6./ Remove your old IE completely from your system, either by uninstalling in Add-Remove programs, or by using:
    http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html  IEradicator for a clean install of IE6 SP1

7./ Run scandisk & and defrag.

8./ Run ie6setup.exe to install IE6 SP1 to your system.

9./ Now fully update your system at the Windows Up-Date site for ALL system-critical and security up-dates:
    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com Windows Update

10./ NOTE: Just copy and paste the above line. Otherwise you can get the syntax wrong.

11./ In IE, Tools, IE Options, Advanced, & under "Navigation" Uncheck:

"Activate install on demand" [Other] , and, "Activate install on demand" [Internet Explorer]

In IE6 Tools, Options, General, set the History to the number you require (I use zero) then open Settings
and set the Temporary Internet Files cache to 20Mb or less.Mac, thanks for help. I plan on going up Wednesday to look at the computer. I think I will get on dial up and install ad-aware and run it and then try to see if her lan connection will work without that error. I will also try the unistall/reinstall of DUN to see if that works. If not I may just reinstall W98 over top of existing. Is this a option?A clean install is a better option as over-installing can mess up an updated system.

With a good clean install, especially on a partitioned drive, you can then image the OS drive (C: ) and in future you can just format c: and restore from the image CDRs.

It is what I do which means that I can format and restore drive C: in under 30 minutes.
