Solve : computer lags on desktop bootup? |
Answer» Hi, Your Specs show Windows 8 as your OS. Have you upgraded to Windows 8.1 yet? If not, I suggest you do so. That might result in some improvement. According to my ORIGINAL post, windows 8.1 has been installed already!Quote from: Allan on February 14, 2014, 05:21:16 AM Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem. tried the msconfig as you mentioned, seems to help. Do you recommend Mike Lin's startup control panel or you think ccleaner's startup enable/disable PART of the program decent enough? I'll monitor the status some more to be sure if the problem is gone or not.Startup CPL is my app of choice for getting startup apps reined in... |

Solve : Offline install of .NET 3.5 on Windows 8.1? |
Answer» Heya All! Error: 0x800f081f Personally I can't make any sense of the log file that it generates... the only thing I noticed is that there are files that say "x86_netfx4" and "x86_netfx35 [cdf|linq]" but nothing that mentions netfx2 or netfx3... :/ maybe it's bugging because there is no netfx3 file as specified by the DISM /FeatureName switch... Anyway, any help figuring this out is greatly appreciated! I'm gonna continue fiddling around to see if I can figure it out... If I get a solution I'll post it here, cause I haven't been able to find anything anywhere else! LOL! Thanks! -kyle_engineerkyle_engineer, You do have Internet, you posted here. So why not just hook that computer into your local network and do the download? There are a number of ways you can tie it to your other PC and SHARE the Internet. Which of the items below do you have? • Cat 5 cable •Ethernet card. •Simple hub. ° Router with wireless. ° USB wireless °Direct connect cable. Thee is a reason to do direct download. The site can sense what system you have and provide the correct version of the MS .NET package. Try direct download. When I say I can't connect it, it is because of company policy reasons. I would have trouble physically connecting it, but for various reasons - I won't be connecting it. Also, it doesn't need to "provide the correct version" because there is not "correct version" for Win 8.1. And since .NET isn't at all hardware reliant, it would make no difference what I'm running on... My main confusion is why it is not "enabling" as it's supposed to. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh506443%28v=vs.110%29.aspx See the "Troubleshooting" section.OK, you are right. MS says you can do it with a FULL download., Microsoft .NET Framework Client Profile OFFLINE Installer My guess is you already read that. However, that link does specify a 3.5 version issue. Quote .NET Framework development tools like Visual Studio, will not function on .NET Framework 3.5 Client Profile. Developers will need to install full .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1. Yeah, I knew about that. Thanks for the help anyway though. I was able to work around the issue fortunately. So this topic is OFFICIALLY solved! yay - kyle_engineer Try this Offline installer for .NETFX 3.5. Im build the installer from OS Windows 8.0 Link Removed... Hope this help.. |

I ENCOUNTERED no such issue as your problem but I never installed Logitech's software on this computer. Solve : windows8 single language installation? |
Answer» my laptop came with preloaded windows8 single language... i reinstalled win7 and ubuntu13.10, lost the recovery PARTITION(haven't burnt recovery partition into disks). i want to upgrade now to win8, i don't have installation disk. my frnd have the same laptop with same configurations except external graphic card(his laptop doesn't have, but my laptop has 1gb external nvidia). can i use his recovery partition to get back win8. if so, will the recovery media takes product key from bios of my laptop or not(as all win8 preloaded laptops are coming with product key in bios). my lap came with win8 only(preloaded).... i got setup file from torrents... since win8 takes product key from bios itselfI don't know whether that will work. You could try it and, if it does not work, order a recovery disc from the manufacturer of your computer, as I previously suggested. If you have to order the recovery disc, you will have some downtime unless you can continue using Win 7 while waiting on the disc to be sent to you. |

Solve : Help, Distorted Characters!? |
Answer» I need help, my computer has distorted characters in it. It HAPPENS on the desktop and on webpages. I don't THINK it's a monitor problem because Windows was able to screen capture the problem. I found that it happens often on webpages, but it also happens on the desktop sometimes. Completely installing a fresh install of the computer, sometimes helps fix the issue temporarily but it occurs after a few days again. I have also tried changing the ClearType settings, but it doesn't help. Please help, I've included an attached screenshot of the problem, the problem is circled in red, thanks. 250 W PSU This jumped out at me right AWAY...Quote from: patio on December 19, 2013, 06:17:18 AM This jumped out at me right away... Solve : Can't restore backup made by 'Windows 7 file recovery' on windows 8? |
Answer» Hi, I have created a windows image backup by win 7 file recovery from control panel of win 8 and now I want to restore that backup. The Backup Files category includes individual file backups and files related to backup software. Individual backup files are often generated automatically by software programs. Backup software files include incremental backups and full system backups.Does this help any?You can use windows 8.1 disk manager to mount the vxd file as a disk drive. As shown is this utube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DxNzq2Uf2c Hope this helps. Isn't Windows 8 AMAZING, thank you Microsoft for giving users what we can easily use finely.Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 01, 2014, 02:30:38 PM You use Windows 7 to restore a image backup made by Windows 7.I have created a backup of my win 8 with windows file recovery in control panel. I also tried to restore that image from windows installation disk but it can't find my backup too. I backed up my windows drive (C). So now how can I restore that windows image backup? Quote from: Lisa_maree on February 01, 2014, 05:59:42 PM You can use windows 8.1 disk manager to mount the vxd file as a disk drive.I wanna restore my windows from that backup not to mount it. Solve : Upgraded to Windows 8.1, ruined my computer? |
Answer» About a year ago I upgraded my computer to Windows 8. This , coupled with a RAM and an HDD upgrade, made my 5 year old computer run the best that it has in a long time, and I was happy. Can you please share with us your computer make/model or if custom built the hardware specifics so we know what you are working with? A 5 year old computer doesnt state enough about it to assist at this point. Also if its an off the shelf computer, please state the upgrade info such as upgraded to 4GB of DDR2 800Mhz RAM from 2GB DDR2 800Mhz etc.No problem. It's a store bought computer, an HP Pavilion a6177c TV PC. Comes with all sorts of nice things like a TV and Radio card and such. Not the strongest hardware though... Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 with Viiv, clocked at 2.33GHz Original operating system was 32 Bit Vista. Original Ram was 2 GB Windows is installed on a 400GB harddrive. I've replaced the Disc drive once before because it stopped working. Original Videocard is GeForce 7350 LE. Since I've bought it, I've replaced the video card twice, and now I have: GeForce GT 520 with 1GB RAM 4 GB RAM (just removed the two 1GB sticks and put two 2GB sticks) And I ADDED a WD Black 1TB hard drive.Do you have the original recovery media to restore the system back to its original configuration with Windows Vista? If so, then using it to get back to Vista and then installing your Windows 8 OS again and, finally, doing the upgrade to Windows 8.1 again may be a long route to getting your system running right. Of course, you should have all your important files backed up on some external storage media. If not, you'll lose it by taking the route to restoring your system. Quote from: soybean on December 27, 2013, 08:01:53 AM Do you have the original recovery media to restore the system back to its original configuration with Windows Vista? If so, then using it to get back to Vista and then installing your Windows 8 OS again and, finally, doing the upgrade to Windows 8.1 again may be a long route to getting your system running right.I don't think that it's necessary to go all the way back to Vista. I don't have my Vista media anyway... maybe if I could just go back down to Windows 8 it'd work better.Quote from: OmriSama on December 27, 2013, 12:27:12 PM ... maybe if I could just go back down to Windows 8 it'd work better.I don't believe that is an option. Microsoft designed this update to be irreversible. When your computer was new, it had a recovery partition; this is usually drive D. Did you remove that? If you truly no longer have a way to restore Windows Vista, you can get recovery discs from HP. They will charge a fee but I believe it will be less than $20. They will need to model of your computer and a serial #. Quote care with iObit's advanced systemcare Also, avoid tools like this that promise to "Speed up" your PC, they don't improve anything and often cause a lot more problems than they solve. In fact, having your PC clogged up with tools like this can often slow it down. I'd remove all "Speed up" tools that are installed and see if that helps.Quote from: camerongray on December 27, 2013, 04:01:14 PM Also, avoid tools like this that promise to "Speed up" your PC, they don't improve anything and often cause a lot more problems than they solve. The guy above you uses it... haha. But I mean, I had those when I was on Windows 8 and my System worked fine. Everything just changed when I upgraded to 8.1 And yeah, I got a recovery partition. Never checked it out though, and I don't know how to use it.Quote What about CCleaner? The guy above you uses it...CCleaner is a safe application. Quote And yeah, I got a recovery partition. Here's some information about the Recovery partition. But you can't even use your recovery partition to roll back to Windows 8 so it's useless, just like it always has been.Quote from: OmriSama on December 30, 2013, 02:01:27 AM But you can't even use your recovery partition to roll back to Windows 8 so it's useless, just like it always has been. The recovery partition is there for a SPECIFIC purpose, which is to restore a system back to its configuration when new. So, it's definitely not useless; without it, computer users who find they need to format a hard drive (the OS partition) and reinstall their OS would have to buy a retail or OEM version of the OS. Furthermore, users should create recovery discs (CD/DVD) from the recovery partition on the hard drive so that they can restore their system if they have to replace failed hard drive. If a hard drive fails and you have not burned a DVD from your recovery partition, then you're in that situation again where you have to buy the OS. As I said in a previous post, you have the option of restoring the system to your original OS (Vista) and then doing the upgrade to Win 8 and then, if desired, another upgrade to Win 8.1. I assuming you have a disc for Win 8 upgrade from XP/Vista/7. If not, then how did you get it installed in the first place? Quote from: soybean on December 30, 2013, 08:25:25 AM The recovery partition is there for a specific purpose, which is to restore a system back to its configuration when new. So, it's definitely not useless; without it, computer users who find they need to format a hard drive (the OS partition) and reinstall their OS would have to buy a retail or OEM version of the OS.So Vista came installed with the computer when I bought it, and for Windows 8 I bought the 40 dollar upgrade and used that. I can get Windows 8 for free though, because of Dreamspark. |

Solve : Having an absolute nightmare with windows 8. Plaese help =(? |

Answer» Im a musician and make music on my pc. I had xp and it served me well for years , but due to the software increasingly becoming more CPU hungry , I've been forced to upgrade , so I bought myself a new asus base unit on 26/12/2013 , and for 1 week installed lots of VSTs to try and get my new pc set up the way my old laptop was. . The new PC is 15 days old today and im having loads of problems. I'll try to keep it short and to the point. 1. when I tried to install a particular vst , in the space where I had to enter my serial number , it wouldn't let me and said "log in as administrator". I am the only person using this computer , and I am set up as an admin. When I investifated "user accounts" and "permissions" , it says I have "full control" but there is a box at the bottom which is greyed out , called "special permissions" and I cant tick it.Windows does not set you up as the admin account. Vista,7, and 8 attempted to fix the critical security problem of XP whereby all programs had full control over everything. The common misconception is for people to think theyhave been limited in what they can do, "golly I own this computer of course I'm an admin" type THING. But the capability exists to prevent any program from running amuck on your system, since you need to explicitly run the program as administrator. Whatever program is installing your VST needs to be run as administrator. To do so right-click it's icon and select "Run as Administrator". You should be able to install stuff now. Quote 2. All of a sudden , windows explorer hangs when exploring either of my 2 external drives , but only when I get down to 3rd level files. When I right-click a file to select "play using windows media player " , the right click menu doesn;t appear and the green search bar s taking forever , stops , and hangs.I'd be inclined to suspect the Drives are on their way out, personally. It may be a case of taking ownership of the files. Here's a way to easily add that to Windows 8. In this case you would want to right-click the HDD (after adding the above) and "take ownership" of the drive. Other considerations: What file system are your externals using? If they are FAT32 I would almost guarantee drive problems and you should run a disk check on them. Depending on the contents of the folders in question, Windows might be generating previews or thumbnails or something. You an disable it by running: Code: [Select]regsvr32 /u shmedia.dllin an elevated command prompt. (My method is to press the windows key, type cmd, rightclick cmd.exe, and select "Run as Administrator" to get an elevated Prompt). Quote windows media player has stopped working , and when I try to play music files with the built-in asus player ( which the files are associated with ) it tells me I have to update in the store , so...the store loads , I try to update it and it kept saying pending. Eventually it said installed , but still doesnt work because explorer keeps scanning my drives and hanging.this seems to point towards corrupted data on the drive (especially if it's using FAT32). Quote 5. I thought " yeah , i'll set it back to that system restore point I made where everything was working fine " , so I opened sys restore , and my restore point had been replaced with one the pc made itself.....yesterday.That's odd. I have restore points going back about a month on my laptop. (Also running windows Can you briefly explain what VST is? Does VST mean Virtual Studio Technology? Generally, for your purposes, is a VST a plugin to Windows Media Player or some other media player? Approximately how many plugins do you need? You mentioned a "built-in asus player". Is this strictly software, or does this include special hardware? With Win XP, was Windows Media Player your primary tool for listening to music? Do you, or did you, use special software for mixing elements of music? Are you actually running Windows 8 or 8.1? |

Solve : Windows.old folder automatically deleted? |
Answer» I have installed Windows 8 Pro (and then upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro) on a partition that already had a Windows installation on it. It saved the files from the previous install in a folder named Windows.old (as it said it would). Windows 8 has a new Timer feature which will delete Windows.old files automatically after a period of 4 WEEKS since upgrade.http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/1cc46980-d18e-4aca-ad09-8792f2969e1b/missing-windowsold-folder-after-upgrade?forum=w8itprogeneral http://windows8-drivers.com/windows-8-drivers/windows-old-files-are-deleted-automatically-in-windows-8/ Well that caught me by surprise. Here's hoping they remove the feature in future revisions of Windows or actually prompt the user to ask if they want to remove it or not. Well, I had old files in there that I still want that aren't backed up: what's the safest approach to getting them back at this point? I have not turned on my computer since this happened for fear of somehow making it harder to recover (if it comes to it, I'm hoping there's a "reverse" FUNCTIONALITY but guessing that there isn't). Thanks in advance for any suggestions or help.1. if you have not done any disk cleanups then software like Recuva may be able to get the deleted folder back. 2. You may have an old System Restore that contains the data you want. NOTE: I have not done these things, but I Googled and found this page which contains links to some free apps http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-1654029/restore-windows-folder-windows-deleted.htmlYes System Restore won't fix this, unfortunately. Also, this was not a 'Disk Cleanup' as in that post, but instead something that apparently mimicked this as PART of something called 'Timer'. Recuva is my last resort, but probably going to have to be my solution. I shall give it a day to see if anyone's got any other suggestions, but at this point I won't be surprised if there are no other suggestions. Thanks for the reply.BTW, love the signature Salmon, very funny... |
