Answer» When I scroll down the list of contacts in Gmail I find that only part of the list is screened. Why?QUOTE from: Guzeppi on September 12, 2013, 08:07:16 AM When I scroll down the list of contacts in Gmail I find that only part of the list is screened. Why?What do you mean by "is screened"?I mean that the SCREEN (or is it called MONITOR?) does not show the full list of my contacts. The list does not show the last few contacts. Have tried to raise the page to show the hidden part of the list but the page would not budge. thks for yr patience with me. Joe (or GUZEPPI)You should see a scrollbar to the right of the contacts when you hover your mouse over them. And, you should be able to scroll the list by using the scrollbar. It looks like the image below: Thks, your suggestion worked well. Regards. Joe |

Solve : Dell w/ Win 7 to Gateway w/ Win 8? |
|
Answer» Hi anybody who might be able to help me! I previously owned a Dell and it came with a Windows 7 disk (which of course says it can only be used with a Dell). Can I use that disk and install it on my new Gateway that currently is running Windows 8? No. The Dell disk is tied to the Dell MACHINE by the OEM license. An OEM copy of Windows is permanently tied to the first COMPUTER that it was activated on, and can never be activated on any other computer afterwards. The Gateway motherboard and other hardware will not be recognised and Windows Activation will fail. Hi Susan, you can configure Windows 8 to appear just like Windows 7. The first thing you will probably want is the Start menu. You can find information about that here. Here's a screenshot of my desktop. After that it's just a matter of creating your shortcuts to your favourite programs.Of course, your apps are still there but I never use them. This is new? Windows 8.1 is supposed to have the option of doing some of the same. It is being released this month (Oct., 2013) as a free upgrade to Win8. I would recommend performing a full image backup before installing 8.1. |

I've been "fixing" several neighbor's new computers & the culprits have been preinstalled bloatware. Without going into details, it's just unbelievable how much stuff is installed that doesn't work or conflicts, i.e., multiple AV's. The retailer attempted to install & it failed. I am having great difficulty in downloading pictures from my digital camera to the PICTURES folder in Windows 8. Solve : Noob windows 8 (and 8.1) question? |
|
Answer» Hi So right as it starts it goes to the "Metro" screen right. My noob question is: Does it keep using your internet all the time for those apps that it shows in the metro screen? You know what I mean? Theres a weather thing, theres store, news, and stuff. If I'm on desktop, does those things keep using my connection constantly or is it just when I go to the Metro screen? Or not even then?Live tiles only update when the Start Screen is open. And even then usually they have their own caching that avoids network activity. eg. the 'Weather' app isn't going to retrieve weather information every time you open the start screen; only at most say every 2 or 3 minutes. The implication is that the Metro scene could use more of your bandwidth quota. One could wish that is not the case. But how do we know for sure? No, I did not make this up. People have been asking that question for some time. The perception is that Windows 8 does, somehow, use more bandwidth. Now for users with no bandwidth quanta, it does not matter. Here is one of many posts about this: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=350431 One poster said: Quote ... now it's no longer consuming any bandwidth. I've turned off all the live tiles. Maybe they were causing it. Anyways I'm just glad it STOPPED the havoc ...Key phrase: Win 8 eating bandwidth Another: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/ceac33dc-0790-41a0-a825-526d5571e8a8/windows-8-constantly-downloading Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 05, 2014, 01:05:38 PM The implication is that the Metro scene could use more of your bandwidth quota. One could wish that is not the case. But how do we know for sure? The difference between my post and your post is I actually verified that what I said matched my observations on Windows 8.1. I launched resource monitor and the svchost.exe process responsible for live tiles only exhibited network activity when I had the start screen open and showing; and even then it was spurious. an idle Firefox process was using 10 times more bandwidth than all live tiles COMBINED at any given time. Quote No, I did not make this up. People have been asking that question for some time. The perception is that Windows 8 does, somehow, use moreLive tiles use bandwidth. This is not surprising. Live tiles. These are visible in Task Manager's "App History" view, which allows you to see all the network activity used by the various apps. Live tile updates (eg the weather tile) would log as network activity for that tile's App. I also did my research BC. I found what other people had said. As it stands now, Windows 8 takes up more bandwidth than earlier versions of Windows. Now if anyone has lots of bandwidth, it would not matter. Or would it? Using a resource needlessly is, by any definition, bad design. To illustrate. What if everybody left all the lights on at night while they sleep, because they don't care about the wast? Some people leave their computers s on all night. So that means every so often live apps will 'ping' home and consume some bandwidth. How much? Little? Very little? Teeny weeny? Curious minds need to know.Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 05, 2014, 01:32:53 PM I also did my research BC. I found what other people had said. The information you are posting is anecdotal. The information BC is posting is verified by him. Please stop arguing in this thread. Thank you.Ok so I learned a few things here. Those stuff I was talking about are called "live tiles" and you can disable them. Alright. I was asking this is not worried about the windows 8.1 on my notebook but because my brother is a major online gaming fanatic, and he is thinking about going for windows 8.1 on his gaming PC, but he is worried about bandwich consumption once he saw that metro screen on my notebook. He can't speak very well english so he asked me to find some information about this. He thinks those "live tiles" things will make his ms (ping) go higher during online play.Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 05, 2014, 01:32:53 PM As it stands now, Windows 8 takes up more bandwidth than earlier versions of Windows.Alright. This puts you in a position to do two things. First: you need to back that statement up with actual evidence. The links you posted are to people having bandwidth PROBLEMS. This does not mean Windows 8 implicitly uses more bandwidth; you can find equivalent posts for any Windows System, going back to at least XP. Then, you'll have to explain why my observations directly contradict the statement you've made. A tall order on both counts. Quote Using a resource needlessly is, by any definition, bad design. This is yet another false premise. The network transfers performed by Live tiles are done to refresh their display; eg. the Mail Tile would update to show new E-mails. This is no different than already present software; Microsoft Outlook and Windows Live Mail will both do the same thing if kept running. Also of note is that those Live tile callbacks are not called unless the Start Screen is active. Quote Some people leave their computers s on all night. So that means every so often live apps will 'ping' home and consume some bandwidth. How much? Little? Very little? Teeny weeny? Curious minds need to know. The implication here being essentially that no other application that runs on 7 or earlier would ever perform network transfers during idle time. A foolish and demonstrably false assessment. Quote from: RoyZ on April 05, 2014, 02:30:46 PM Ok so I learned a few things here. Those stuff I was talking about are called "live tiles" and you can disable them. Alright. If you are on the desktop or running a desktop application they will not update. I don't think they would update when running a window store app, Either. Quote but he is worried about bandwich consumption once he saw that metro screen on my notebook. He can't speak very well english so he asked me to find some information about this. He thinks those "live tiles" things will make his ms (ping) go higher during online play. The Live tiles use less bandwidth than pretty much everything else I have running that uses the network. Even when Firefox is sitting and doing nothing it's using 10 times as much as the Live Tiles while they are active. The Logging I have goes on since I installed my system. The total bandwidth since the 18th of March is a grand total of 50MB used by all my Live tiles. I find it exceedingly unlikely that Live Tiles would cause network latency. If you're worried about how much data is used by Live Tiles you can turn the Live Tiles off or you can set your connection to indicate it's a "metered connection" which will limit not only the data used by Live Tiles but also will restrict things like Windows Updates to only downloading critical updates. Win 8: http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-enable-metered-wi-fi-connections-in-windows-8/ Win 8.1: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/metered-internet-connections-frequently-asked-questionsstrollin, Good links. Thanks. Quote Ed Rhee/CNETThis implicates Windows 8 could be butter or worse with regard to bandwidth. Probably butter... |

Solve : Understanding downgrade rights, Windows 8? |
|
Answer» Many do not know that Windows 8 has downgrade rights. In fact, BUYING a new legal OEM copy of Windows 8 might be the way to get a fresh legal copy of Windows 7. Of course, you can not split them and use on two desperate computers. Just one PC for the two OS. Downgrade and down-edition rights are an end-user right that Microsoft offers to customers for certain OEM products which meet the technical requirements for a Windows software downgrade. Downgrade rights are documented in the Microsoft Software License Terms that customers accept upon first running Windows and Windows SERVER software. THANKS to downgrade rights, end users who have acquired a later version of the software (such as Windows 8.1 Pro or Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard) can use an earlier version of the software (such as Windows 7 Professional or Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard) until they are ready to MIGRATE to a later version ...EDIT: Before you try this, you mus tread the information on the page in the link given above. Some conditions apply. That page also has other links relating to downgrade rights, Make sure you understand before you try it. What people need to realise though is that the downgrade rights are only valid for Windows 8 Pro which can be downgraded free of charge to Windows 7 Professional but do not apply to regular copies of Windows 8 preinstalled on most consumer level machines.Quote from: camerongray on April 02, 2014, 07:32:30 AM What people need to realise though is that the downgrade rights are only valid for Windows 8 Pro which can be downgraded free of charge to Windows 7 Professional but do not apply to regular copies of Windows 8 preinstalled on most consumer level machines. The Embargo on discussing it ends on April 4th. That is probably on or near when they will make a public announcement. Well, we finally got my friends computer upgraded last Sunday. We were going to go with 8 but when he went to buy it at the store another one of his friends that works there said he would probably regret it, go with 7, so we did. He ordered it on Amazon. The clean install went well, his scanner/printer/fax machine works now and so does his DVD drive, TWO main things he was having a problem with. So there is one less Vista machine on the planet. |

Solve : For people who downloaded Windows 8 for $49? |
|
Answer» I bought the Windows 8 download version for $49 and used it for 10 months and one day got the blue screen of death. I figured it was HARD drive failure so I bought a new hard drive, and then tried to reinstall windows 8 using the product key produced by a program that my son downloaded to reach into the bad drive and retrieve serials. The old serial didn't work so I called MICROSOFT and gave them that number and they accused me of being a thief. So I bought a new copy of Windows 8. My son checked the serial and sure enough it was fake. So either the serial retrieval program lied or somebody sold me a bad download.Quote I called Microsoft and gave them that number and <STRONG>they accused me of being a thief. I have yet to have Microsoft make such claims over the phone. I have gotten my license keys wrong when activating them where I get a letter written down wrong on paper or think that a B is an 8 etc and they never accused me of being a thief. I saw that DEAL shortly after Windows 8 was released and the sales were slumped that Microsoft was offering it at the low cost to try to get takers for around $40. If not purchased through microsoft it could be a cracked beta that you purchased and the key for the cracked beta of Windows 8 was GIVEN to all who bought into the pirated OS, then I can see a microsoft employee stating that your copy is not genuine and would you like to purchase a genuine copy. However stating that a customer is a thief over the phone is strong words that would usually cost the microsoft employee their job for using such language as for it is not good for business. If you would liek to do so, you can also share information about the pirated copy so that microsoft can attempt to take legal action, however most are hidden from legal action in countries with weak software piracy laws, and out of legal reach to take legal action against. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/howtotell/cfr/report.aspx Do you have documentation on where you purchased this to share with microsoft to offer you an activation if it is genuine? If this documentation is from a pirate distributor, you should throw away the media and buy a new copy of Windows 8. Microsoft will not cut you a break for your $49 loss and give you a deal on a genuine copy feeling bad for your situation. Its just business! This one guy came up to me once with a laptop he bought in Singapore cheap that had Windows XP on it and all of a sudden he started getting notices that his Windows XP was Not Genuine, it had been a pirated/cracked version of Windows XP installed to a no name generic laptop. Microsoft offered people the ability to make it genuine and get rid of the blat by paying for a legal license. I directed him to MS website and he was able to make his XP Genuine by paying for it. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/help/genuine/faq Quote from: DaveLembke on October 18, 2013, 03:04:15 PM I saw that deal shortly after Windows 8 was released and the sales were slumped that Microsoft was offering it at the low cost to try to get takers for around $40.Quote from: DaveLembke on October 18, 2013, 03:04:15 PM I saw that deal shortly after Windows 8 was released and the sales were slumped that Microsoft was offering it at the low cost to try to get takers for around $40. There was no such deal. Windows 8 was $39.99 for an upgrade install at launch. $69.99 for the full retail version. The prices are now in fact higher now. the "$49.99 copy of windows" from what I can tell has been a scam that has been around since at least Windows XP. They are pirated Copies of the Operating System. The issue now is that the actual OS is actually very close to that price (69.99) so it seems that much more legitimate compared to when a full retail copy was $200+. BC thanks for correction... that $40 deal was for the upgrade to 8 now that I google searched to confirm. |

Solve : Windows 8 product key has too many sets of 5? |
|
Answer» I bought a hard drive from Newegg and then I bought a OEM copy of Windows 8 from Newegg to go on it. I am at the point of entering my serial which I carefully with a bright light and a magnifying glass copied the multi-colored item marked key and entered them first on paper and then into the set and now Windows tells me it's wrong. Part of the problems is that the key on the envelope (no box) has 9 sets of 5. Which of those 9 sets do I use? Newegg said I should CONTACT Mircosoft but I bought an OEM version. It's either continue or quit. No skip buttonI never said there was. You leave the key blank, Nada, zip. Then just go on. This is documented elsewhere. http://www.nextofwindows.com/how-to-skip-product-key-when-installing-windows-8/ Quote While skipping a product key during the installation is nice, it won’t get you too far as it used to be. You will need your windows 8 activated before customizing your Windows, i.e. PC Settings. If using a USB instead of a DVD, there may be other things you have to do. See the article in link above. |

Solve : Installing Win 8 On 2nd Computer? |
|
Answer» I recently purchased an HP Laptop for my daughter. It came with Win 7 installed, and a SECOND disc for Win 8 updating. Would her Win 8 disc be likely to load into my desktop, or would it have been already restricted to use only in her laptop? No, it wouldn't install on another computer, and yes, it would be restricted to only update if it found an existing qualifying product, namely the existing Windows 7 installation on the HP laptop. The OP said his computer has Win 7 Pro but he did not say exactly what version of Win 7 is on his daughter's laptop. Solve : Windows 8.1 will not recognize *anything* as an audio device? |

Answer» I have an ASUS X75A laptop, with built-in sound card (a proprietary VIA model that ASUS uses; it shows up as a "dev8446"). It came with WIN8 pre-installed and I applied the free upgrade to Win 8.1. Everything worked fine for a while, then one day the volume indicator in the task bar had a big red X over it, and claimed I had no audio devices installed. this means I have to reinstall everything if I do a repair installation from the recovery partitionA repair will not affect any of your important data or programs. Why is there not any info on the charm?Did you pin a shortcut or the .EXE that launches it ? ? When I pinned the outlook 2013 app to the start in Windows 8.1 the charm did not display that it was Outlook 2013? I clicked on the blank charm and outlook 2013 opened? Why is there not any info on the charm? Items pinned to the Start screen are not "Charms"; Charms are the items you see when hovering the pointer over the top-right of the screen. The items that are in the start screen are called badges. That said, I'm not sure why it would be blank. Does the non-pinned Outlook 2013 Badge appear properly? How are you pinning it? I suspected that the problem was that it was readded afterwards, since normally the installation adds it as a Tile in the start menu. However, I found that I was able to remove outlook 2013's tile, and then re-add it again. I re-added it by using Start-Search to search for outlook and then pinning the outlook 2013 result, and it appeared pretty much as before (blue tile with the outlook 2013 icon). As others have suggested a reboot is probably a good thing to give a try, if you haven't already.Yes I had already rebooted when I first had the problem 2 days ago. I just did the search for Outlook 2013 on the START page , found the app, right clicked and pinned to start! Same result, one blue tile without any information on the tile. When I access the tile, outlook 2013 opens?? Use Explorer...check these 4 locations...when you find the .exe right clik that...or drag it to pin...the icon should show after a reboot.Quote For Win7 32 bit: |

Solve : Screenshots? |
|
Answer» Hi all... Finally perseverance and dogged determination pays off and I have found the solution to my screenshots problem, the issue was a change in the registry and the wrong value number.Glad you found the solution. But, honestly, I don't see much value in the feature. You can only use the technique for a full screen capture and it does not allow you to save the image under a unique name when you capture the image. The images captured this way are simply named Screenshot (1), Screenshot (2), and so forth. So, if want to give the image files a name that has meaning, you need to change the name after the image has been captured to the Screenshots folder. And, if you do that, you've really saved no time using this screen capture METHOD, as opposed to using the more flexible Snipping Tool. Quote from: soybean on March 12, 2014, 08:14:47 AM Glad you found the solution. But, honestly, I don't see much value in the feature. Contrariwise, I find this feature (which I actually did not know existed until this thread) to be far better than the alternatives. In general, I find the Snipping tool to be the worst alternative of the three. Print-Screen+Paint/Photoshop/Image Program, where you press print screen, which puts the screen image on the clipboard and then paste and save that image in an image editor. The main problem with this approach is that it's a pain to use this for screenshotting a series of steps, either for showing reproduction steps of a problem or for documenting a series of steps. It has a huge advantage over the snipping tool, since it can capture menus and other popups that would close if any other window get's the focus. I thought the Snipping Tool would be a useful replacement for that method when Win7 was released but after using it once or twice I've never used it again. It basically only removes the paste step, and you still need to save the snipped image, which includes giving it a name. It's also not possible to use the Snipping tool to capture Menus, drop-downs, or similar pop-ups, which IMO Is a pretty SERIOUS limitation. 3. The new Windows Key+Print Screen IMO this is the best alternative, at least for me. The main thing I do for screenshots is for documenting a series of dialogs, usually when following a set of steps. And the LAST thing I want to do is screw around coming up with a name for them in the middle of doing so. I find that I have to constantly remember what exactly I was doing and what the next step was. With the new combo we finally get the functionality that Mac OS classic had in 1984 with Command+P, and IMO it's taken too damned long for Microsoft to come up with a non-retarded way of creating screenshots that doesn't remove your attention from what you are doing and require you to actually do extra work to name the screenshot, instead saving it as an image that you can deal with later the process you are documenting. Using thumbnails in the screenshots folder or sorting by date after taking a series of screenshots makes finding the series just created trivial, then I can move them to a more appropriate folder for further handling or zipping/attaching etc. There is also the case where I am testing a piece of software and want to take a quick capture of some error dialogs or problems I've found and having to either print-screen, paste, and save as for every screenshot or having to snip and choose a filename is an absolute pain in the *censored*. I Much prefer to be able to capture as many screenshots documenting something as possible, then I can go through the captured images to decide which ones are the most useful to document the issue- same story when trying to document a problem or series of proper steps. The older method makes it far more likely for me to simply document it using text which usually results in some back and forth and I have to take a screenshot anyway. Even in the general case, When taking screenshots I Much prefer the method of least intrusion such that it simply saves the screenshot and I can deal with it later, since that encourages taking more screenshots rather than less, because I don't have to break from my current process simply to give the new file a name. Anyway, I did some experiments with this new feature. When I deleted the registry key in question, it recreated it when I took another screenshot and the screenshot was saved properly. I then edited it to a large value. (1280). When I took a screenshot the new image appeared with the new number and the registry value was incremented. So I changed the value to a low value (I had several screenshots at this point, 1,2,3,4, and 1280) I changed it to 2. the new screenshot was saved as 5 after I set the index to 2. I actually wasn't able to break it, for whatever reason. I also do not have the {B7BEDE81-DF94-4682-A7D8-57A52620B86F} key in my User Shell Folders at all. The only difference I Can imagine is that I am using Windows 8.1, not Windows 8. I launched my Windows 8 VM. Looking in the registry, I Found the ScreenshotIndex key missing. Therefore, according to the article, my screenshotting feature would be broken. However, when I pressed Windows Key+Print Screen, the registry key appeared and a screenshot was saved properly. A screenshots folder was created in my Pictures folder which contained the screenshot. I changed the registry key to 512 and took a screenshot, and the new file was saved to the right location with (512). I changed it to 1 again, and when I took a new screenie it saved as (3) and the registry value was incremented to 4. Looking in the User Shell Folders key and there is no key that the article mentions. Therefore it would seem that a lot of what the article states is actually wrong. I would guess that adding the user shell folder key creates a Screenshots 'known folder' which overrides the default location that would be in My Pictures. This would fix the problem if there is an issue saving to My Pictures or if the My Pictures setting is not valid. (confirmed by changing My Pictures User Shell Folder to gibberish- screenshots no longer saved but the screen dimmed- when I added the specified key it saved again to the folder I specified.). Looking further into it, it looks like User Shell Folders supports "Known Folders". In this case, these are documented here. The guid used in the article is for the screenshots Known folder. If not present/overridden by adding an item here than the default setting is "%USERPROFILE%\Pictures\Screenshots". Note that this folder might not correspond to the My Pictures folder if the My Pictures folder has been set to another folder, which means it won't appear in the "My Pictures" folder in ones documents. (eg. if I change my Pictures folder to be in say D:\Pictures than saving screenshots will still put them in %USERPROFILE%\Pictures\Screenshots and not in D:\Pictures\Screenshots even though opening the "My Pictures" folder in Explorer will open D:\Pictures. |

Solve : Ease of Access? |

Answer» I have a huge mess on my laptop...I turned on magnifier. In trying to shut it off I appear to have hit a command to disable the mouse in lieu of the keyboard. (I did confirm that this problem was not related to the F4 button, which shuts off the mouse.) To MAKE matters worse, I accidentally turned on the on-screen keyboard--because, well, I don't REALLY know how to navigate with just arrows, I guess. OSK appears to REQUIRE the mouse to WORK, move or CLOSE. It's sitting in the middle of the screen, covering everything up and I can't figure out how to even move it without the mouse. I have been all through Microsoft's page about Accessibility and it tells me about turning stuff on but not turning it off. |

Solve : DOS sort command? |

Answer» Have tried the DOS sort command on both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 and it doesn't work on either version. Anybody know what's going on?Insufficient information. How are you using it, what were you expecting, and what do you get? (The sort command is available in all versions of Windows, as WELL as in MS-DOS.) The most simple command, i.e. sort filename produces nothing ..... just get a new line. Can't be the file I'm sorting cause the cat command works just fine. A sort command line that includes redirection symbols such as < > or - , produces an error message indicating they are unrecognizable. So, i would assume the command is there but the instruction for its use are just so much barf. Cat is not a native Windows command. What OS are you running? Have you munged your PATH environment variable? What happens (copy and paste the command window text) when you do these things? Solve : Multiple OS installers in single bootable External HDD? |
|
Answer» Hi guys, Looks like Grub4DOS would work but would take some time to setup and I believe it would require you to modify things each time you added a new ISO. A small amount of time to set up, and a simple edit to the menu.lst file when a new ISO is added, but to set against those things, it's free and you can use any pen drive or USB hdd you have lying around. I do agree the Zalman product looks very useful. I found some Amazon reviews that make interesting reading. Since jhay_e03 already has a drive that he wants to use, Grub4DOS is probably the better solution. I do love my Zalman though, I can carry a whole arm load of installer disks around in a 2.5" external drive.thanks Salmon and Strollin, I will try your suggestions and hopefully it will work on NTFS type of Volume. My another concern is if Grub4DOS and Zalman can support NTFS file type because I've tried Xboot but it doesn't support NTFS. anyways, please give me time to try those suggested apps and I will keep you posted. thanks guys, really appreciate it. Regards, KhraieyscaelQuote from: jhay_e03 on February 24, 2014, 05:56:20 PM My another concern is if Grub4DOS and Zalman can support NTFS file type Grub4dos supports booting an ISO on a volume holding an NTFS file system, but bear this in mind: I believe the OS inside the ISO needs to support NTFS natively so Windows disk images will be OK but you may have a problem with some Linux ISOs. My Zalman is formatted with the NTFS file system and doesn't care what file system the OS within the ISO supports. As mentioned earlier, the Zalman appears to the hardware as an external optical drive with the selected ISO image mounted as if it was a CD/DVD in the drive. As long as the machine it's plugged into supports the ability to boot from an external USB device it works.Quote from: strollin on February 25, 2014, 11:28:19 AM My Zalman is formatted with the NTFS file system and doesn't care what file system the OS within the ISO supports. Neither does grub4DOS; however an OS booted off the ISO may, or may not be able to 'see' the volume CONTAINING the ISO, depending on whether that booted OS can read the file system installed on that volume. |

I usb BOOTED my PC .and installed windows xp on an unallocated space(not c; drive). after windows xp was installed, i rebooted my pc, i got surprised that dual boot menu was not visible. and the only operating system listed was win xp(when f8 key is pressed). also the c drive on which windows 8 was installed, was shown as"system"disk and other as"boot"disk (G: drive of windows xp sp3). tell me what is wrong and what to do? , also please i already have installed most programs and i'm in no mood to run"setup xp sp3"again. note; i am deaf, and sorry if my english is bad.Quote windows 8 (developer preview)How can you be using windows 8 (developer preview)? Do you mean Windows 8.1 or later? I don't believe any developer preview will function normal since Windows 8 was officially released over a year ago. Unfortunately, I believe you will need to reinstall Windows 8 to get out of the conundrum you now have. And then, you will need to take a different approach to Windows XP. If you have two hard drives, you could INSTALL Windows XP by unplugging your Win8 HDD until you're done installing XP. After that, you can use your motherboard's boot menu (often called by pressing F11 during POSTing) to choose which HDD to boot from. Alternatively, you could install Windows XP as a virtual machine running under Windows 8, by using virtual machine software such as VMware Player or virtualbox and then installing Windows XP as virtual machine. soybean is right. If you want to move on, forget Windows XP. Now here is some information you may want to know. For those people who have to have XP on a machine that has Window 7 or 8 and just one hard drive there is a way that works. XP must be installed first. Ignore people who tell you other wise. Just do it that way until you understand what is going on with he Windows boot thing. Later, ypou can make your one exception rules. After installing both Windows XP and the next Windows OS, either 7 or 8, you must make a image backup of the partitions. If the Windows XP install goes bad, you have to use the partition recovery to recover just the XP partition only without CHANGING the boot information. I stress this only because at least one tool I know about wants to put the boot information back to the standard XP boot method. That would destroy the Windows 7 or 8 boot information. And no, you can not fix it with boot.ini options. The better alternative is to have two serrate, physical boot devices. Here is a phrase for a search on either Bing, Google or Yahoo. boot XP from a flash drive I have my computer set up with dual boot XP and Win8. Here's some information about how to do that. |

Solve : Tablet that can run Excel with macros? |
|
Answer» I’m looking to buy a tablet that will run Microsoft Excel with macros. All I need it for is to print invoices (the invoices are designed using macros). It should be as small as possible (no bigger than 8” if possible). I am not particular about anything else (brand name, look, system, etc). Any ideas? It will have to be a tablet that RUNS Windows 8. So forget either Android or Apple. And yes, Microsoft has its own Surface tablet, which is not doing so well. For what it is worth, here is a bit about current Windows 8 tablets. One of the tablets in that article is the Dell Venue 8 Pro. It might be a very good choice for you since it comes with the 2013 version of Home and Student OFFICE, which includes Excel. Newegg.com is currently selling it for $290. See http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834300179I have a Dell Venue 8 Pro and can verify that it comes with the full version of Excel 2013 and can run macros. I'd recommend GETTING the 64G model instead of the 32G since, as shipped, the 32G model has very little free space on the C: drive. |

Solve : Weird sound behavior and mousepad? |
|
Answer» Okay so I just upgraded downgraded to windows 8.1, and for all you guys reading this in windows 8: don't get 8.1; you will be sad. Anyway, so I GOT 8.1 and now my increase volume button is kinda.... I'm not sure if I should say MALFUNCTIONING or what but it's incrementing the volume by 4 instead of 1 when I try to turn the sound up. I'm not sure if Microsoft wanted to make LIFE easier on my lazy American *something* or what but it's annoying and I wanna know how to make it go up by 1 instead. New driver? Some secret sound card option? Help please. |

Solve : Permission from Administrator? |
|
Answer» My computer OFTEN tells me I cant do something and that I need permission from the Administrator. I am the administrator and have full control. HOWEVER when I set the permissions to full control I got a series of error messages that said basically failed. Yet it CLEARLY shows a tick in Full control box. What should I do to PUT things right. I recently (yesterday) done a full wipe and re install of Windows 8 after saving all my files to an external drive then putting them back later, could this be anything to do with it. (I have full control of the external drive) |

Thanks for telling me.Trying to bump again. Has anyone else experienced this before? If it's a new computer why not go back to the retailer? If you formatted as you stated above and it still happened you're doing something wrong in Setup...u can get rid of this problem if u have a linux bootable disk or any WINDWS bootable disk process 1: using windows bootable disk: boot from from bootable disk and click on repair your system. it may say not-compatible. open command prompt in repair tools now type [ren C:\windows\system32\sethc.exe sethcbak.exe] without braces. if it has done successfully done type [copy C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe C:\windows\system32\sethc.exe] without braces.. if u were struck with commands or opening command prompt post here now boot to ur os when logon screen appears press shift key 5 times(if hotkeys are switched off u can FIND on left edge of logon screen enable them and click shift key 5 times, ) this'll open u command prompt. now type [net localgroup administrators username /add] without braces. use account username instead of username in the command if it contains blank spaces keep the complete username in inverted commas ... now again boot from the bootable disk/usb and enter cmd as stated above and type the following commands [del C:\windows\system32\sethc.exe] without braces followed by [ren C:\windows\sethcbak.exe sethc.exe]. remove the bootable disk and enjoy ur admin account. if u got stuck with any problem post here. i'll tell u how to do that using ubuntu bootable disk [edited by Allan]I had MUCH the same problem so I chose to reset my Gateway N570P13 system using a backup USB drive. The USB drive boots ok, but when I click "Refresh Your PC", it says that my drive is locked and tells me to unlock it and try again. Going to a command prompt and trying "unlock" yields an invalid cmd. I even tried to load an Unbuntu 13 iso but the computer wouldn't load it either. BTW, the Gateway is fairly new so I wiped all my data files before trying the above reset. What am I doing wrong? Gateway's CS was little help. Tnx |

Solve : Multi-booting XP and Windows 8 help? |
|
Answer» Hi folks. Recently finished by first PC build and works GREAT, however I'm having quite some trouble installing Windows 8 on another partition. I've successfully installed XP which is working great, but Windows 8 refuses to install on another partition, coming up with a pop up saying it cannot install here as there is already a MBR Partition table there, and that it needs a GPT disc. Here is a layout I have used. You need at least 160GB drive to be piratical. Are you saying some hard drives are pirates? Can you identify those rascals? I want to steer clear of them. Seriously, what is a piratical drive? Quote from: soybean on February 17, 2014, 07:43:55 AM Are you saying some hard drives are pirates? Can you identify those rascals? I want to steer clear of them.Just one picture found. The Piratical Drive-by: Dirk Flinthart November 24, 2010 http://www.angelaslatter.com/the-piratical-drive-by-dirk-flinthart/ All this nonsense aside Tyrone...is there an option for adding a 2nd HDD ? ? This would be the cleanest solution...all you do is select which drive you want at boot time via the BIOS... Let us know.I have a dual-boot machine with XP on the C drive, Windows 8 on the D drive and lots of storage on the E drive. XP has to go on first then Win8 goes on another partition of the same drive. |

Solve : Internet Connection Problems Proxy Server? |
|
Answer» My daughter accidentally deleted Wingate 7 from our new computer. I downloaded Wingate 8 and now my computer won't connect to the Internet, says there is no response from the proxy server. I've changed from wireless to Ethernet and still no change. I don't have the money to get it fixed professionally and would prefer to fix it myself. Lol, you scared him away.. You are new here...you responded to a 1 1/2 Month old Topic... Think about it.Im sorry... must have got carried away scrolling down the list Quote You are new here...you responded to a 1 1/2 Month old Topic... Quote Im sorry... must have got carried away scrolling down the list Dont WORRY too much about that... it was only really 19 days ( 10/31 to 11/18 ), not 1.5 months. Quote Lol, you scared him away.. Only suggestion I have regarding the post is while humor to posts may be funny, as well as we all jab each other every once in a while due to typos in spelling etc, its best not to post a comment that is not really beneficial to anyone who may find this through a google hit etc. It wastes space and detracts from the professionalism of the site. But this is not to scold you at all by any means. I welcome anyone who wants to help others here as well as those in need for help. Some comments you may see however are like "Here we go again" with people who ask for help but you can swear they are going out of their way to post for assistance and intentionally leaving out specific details so that what can be solved in 1 response is dragged out to 18 responses for additional info as they play games to hook you in to make you chase your tail trying to come to a solution for them in which they may not even really have this problem, and they plainly are getting kicks out of making you scratch your head and leading you on further etc. We have had people here act this way and no names mentioned, but all of us here who have been here for years know of the past problems with reoccuring intentional time wasters. Sometimes they get banned and other times we see their posts and ignore them after making taking a quick peek to see if after crying wolf for so long that maybe they actually have a real problem this time and their post / trap that is waiting to hook someone sits at 0 responses until someone gets lured in and taken down the path of frustration when there is likely never to be a solution to the posted question to that is EXTREMELY lacking in specifics. And even when posting a list of questions with every specific detail required to post a final post that has a solution to their problem, they dodge this because it goes against the game that they are playing! Fortunately their are only a couple of individuals that I have had to just ignore and the good majority of people are posting real problems and looking for real help vs trying to catch someone into their trap and waste time of everyone who gets hooked into the trap. Glad to have you with us, and I hope to see you helping others here if you are familiar on a subject matter that has beneficial info to share to all readers. Thanks for the informative reply and welcome. I think this topic should be closed now, to many replies with nothing to do with the question. |

Solve : Change Windows 8 to Windows 7??? |
|
Answer» I am probably asking a question that was once answered but maybe someone can help me. My 10 year old got a desktop PC (HP Pavilion Slimline 400) last week for her b-day. It came loaded with Windows 8. YUCK!! Can anyone tell me how/if I can "downgrade" to Windows 7 without having to pay anything. Please help. You need a Windows 7 DVD. You would then FORMAT the drive and install Windows 7. You're better off leaving it alone.Start with Classic Shell to make it look like Win7 or WinXP. All I would like is for everything to look like Win7...Classic Shell does that.I'd personally suggest just getting used to Windows 8. About 45% of the interfacing is the same... It's really just some of the Metro menu stuff and a few of the settings that are awkward at first... But yeah... once you're used to it it's pretty nice. That said, you can use ClassicShell as recommended, however I'm personally not really into off-brand stuff that modifies the OS... personally. If you really want to revert to Win 7, you'd have to do it as Allan said... but you would need an OS disk and a key. |

Solve : high cpu, disk, memory usage on windows 8? |
|
Answer» so I just bought a new computer.
... I think my specs should be good enough to not have problems with streaming and opening normal programs. So, you feel that it's too slow not only on the Internet but also when just using programs on it. Is that RIGHT? Can you mention some specifics? When starting your computer, how long does it take to get to the Windows Login screen? Please give one or more examples of slow program launching. Did you notice a difference after using drivertuner 3.5? What make and model is your computer? Did you consider checking the manufacturer's website for updated drivers, INSTEAD of using drivertuner 3.5? DriverTuner is probably the issue here...just sayin. |
