Answer»

Have deleted my gmail account in error in Windows 8. Have been to the gmail help site but, although i have given them my gmail address and reset my password (which they accepted) they KEEP asking me for an ALTERNATIVE email address before recovering my gmail account.

When I gave them an alternative email address, which they insisted on having, i still could not retrieve my gmail account.

When I tried to reopen my gmail account, the only thing that HAPPENED was that the gmail CREATE AN ACCOUNT PAGE kept popping up on the monitor.

Plse help as i am at a loss and there is no way I can CONTACT gmail to explain my problem to them.

Many thks indeed.

JoeDid you access your account via web browser, LIKE most people? If so, then the version Windows has nothing to do with this. If you thought Windows 8 was significant, please tell us why.

Secondly, you need to access gmail via web browser to delete an account. So, I rather doubt you have actually deleted, or closed, your gmail account. Again, did you normally access it via web browser, or did you set up your gmail account in an email client? Many thks. Somehow, gmail returned to my computer but I don't know how. I kept on frantically
pressing buttons, and that did it!

You see, I am still a beginner in computer navigation, even though I have been practising for several years.

I am a 75-year-old pensioner, and my memory plays tricks with me.

Thank you again, and kind regards.

Joe

| |

Answer»

When I scroll down the list of contacts in Gmail I find that only part of the list is screened. Solve : Dell w/ Win 7 to Gateway w/ Win 8? |
Answer»

Hi anybody who might be able to help me!

I saw certain posts that kind of hit on this topic about downgrading but not one specifically about my issue.

Is it possible to do the following without fouling everything up? I am not liking Windows 8 (talk about not intuitive!). I previously owned a Dell and it came with a Windows 7 disk (which of COURSE says it can only be used with a Dell). Can I use that disk and install it on my new Gateway that currently is running Windows 8?

Any help you give will be very much appreciated!

Thank you,

Susan
Quote from: sbclark on October 04, 2013, 07:14:43 PM

I previously owned a Dell and it came with a Windows 7 disk (which of course says it can only be used with a Dell). Can I use that disk and install it on my new Gateway that currently is running Windows 8?

No. The Dell disk is tied to the Dell MACHINE by the OEM license. The Gateway motherboard and other hardware will not be recognised and Windows Activation will fail.

Hi Susan, you can configure Windows 8 to appear just like Windows 7. The first thing you will probably want is the Start menu. You can find information about that here.
Here's a screenshot of my desktop. After that it's just a matter of creating your shortcuts to your favourite programs.Of course, your apps are still there but I never use them.

This is new?
Windows 8.1 is supposed to have the option of doing some of the same. It is being released this month (Oct., 2013) as a free upgrade to Win8.

I would recommend performing a full image backup before installing 8.1.

| |

And even then usually they have their own caching that avoids network activity. eg. the 'Weather' app isn't going to retrieve weather information every time you open the start screen; only at most say every 2 or 3 minutes. The implication is that the Metro scene could use more of your bandwidth quota. The network transfers performed by Live tiles are done to refresh their display; eg. the Mail Tile would update to show new E-mails. Solve : VPN Trouble? |
Answer»

Hello

I'm trying to create a VPN, but I'm having a lot of trouble.
I'll tell you what I've done so far.

First, I went to Network Connections, File, Incoming New Connection, Selected my account, "Through Internet", and Allow Access.

Then I went to my reuter's (Thomson TG784n) webpage, Games and Application Sharing, Assign and assigned the PTPP server to my PC (I used the IPv4 IP), ticked the log box and clicked Add.

Then I went back to my computer, to Network and Sharing Center and Configure New Connection or Network (or something like that, my PC is not in English). Then I selected Connect to local workplace, then Through Internet or VPN or something like that (it's the 1st option), then I put my PC's IPv4, the same one I assigned the PPTP server to.
Then I went to the connections and connected to the VPN using my account Username and Password.

Then the problems started.
First, after connecting, the Ethernet connection would BECOME "Limited" and the connection would fail. After some investigation, I went to the VPN's properties, IPv4, Advanced and unchecked "Use preset gateway on remote connection'' and did the same for IPv6. Then I could connect to the VPN. In Username and Password I put the same I put when trying to connect to the VPN on my PC.

Then, I went on some more research and I read somewhere that L2TP works better for Andoid phones, so I went and changed the VPN type to L2TP on my PC. Error 789 happened.
I turned off my anti-virus (Kaspersky Pure), my Firewall and my reuter's Firewall off, but it still happened.

Then I went back to the reuter's webpage and created a new game or application, selected PTPP and manualy entered the ports (I used port 1701). Solve : For people who downloaded Windows 8 for $49? |
Answer»

I bought the Windows 8 download version for $49 and used it for 10 months and one day got the blue screen of death. I figured it was HARD drive failure so I bought a new hard drive, and then tried to reinstall windows 8 using the product key produced by a program that my son downloaded to reach into the bad drive and retrieve serials. The old serial didn't work so I called MICROSOFT and gave them that number and they accused me of being a thief. So I bought a new copy of Windows 8. My son checked the serial and sure enough it was fake. So either the serial retrieval program lied or somebody sold me a bad download.Quote

I called Microsoft and gave them that number and <STRONG>they accused me of being a thief.

I have yet to have Microsoft make such claims over the phone. I have gotten my license keys wrong when activating them where I get a letter written down wrong on paper or think that a B is an 8 etc and they never accused me of being a thief.

I saw that DEAL shortly after Windows 8 was released and the sales were slumped that Microsoft was offering it at the low cost to try to get takers for around $40. If not purchased through microsoft it could be a cracked beta that you purchased and the key for the cracked beta of Windows 8 was GIVEN to all who bought into the pirated OS, then I can see a microsoft employee stating that your copy is not genuine and would you like to purchase a genuine copy. However stating that a customer is a thief over the phone is strong words that would usually cost the microsoft employee their job for using such language as for it is not good for business. If you would liek to do so, you can also share information about the pirated copy so that microsoft can attempt to take legal action, however most are hidden from legal action in countries with weak software piracy laws, and out of legal reach to take legal action against. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/howtotell/cfr/report.aspx

Do you have documentation on where you purchased this to share with microsoft to offer you an activation if it is genuine? If this documentation is from a pirate distributor, you should throw away the media and buy a new copy of Windows 8. Microsoft will not cut you a break for your $49 loss and give you a deal on a genuine copy feeling bad for your situation. Its just business!

This one guy came up to me once with a laptop he bought in Singapore cheap that had Windows XP on it and all of a sudden he started getting notices that his Windows XP was Not Genuine, it had been a pirated/cracked version of Windows XP installed to a no name generic laptop. Microsoft offered people the ability to make it genuine and get rid of the blat by paying for a legal license. I directed him to MS website and he was able to make his XP Genuine by paying for it.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/help/genuine/faq

Quote from: DaveLembke on October 18, 2013, 03:04:15 PM
I saw that deal shortly after Windows 8 was released and the sales were slumped that Microsoft was offering it at the low cost to try to get takers for around $40.
Quote from: DaveLembke on October 18, 2013, 03:04:15 PM
I saw that deal shortly after Windows 8 was released and the sales were slumped that Microsoft was offering it at the low cost to try to get takers for around $40.

There was no such deal. Solve : Audio devices not functioning? |

When I try to run audacity it says:

"could not find any audio devices.
You will not be able to play or record audio.

error: internal port audio error"

Previously, my mic and headphones would work and my speakers wouldn't. Solve : Windows 8.1 will not recognize *anything* as an audio device? |
Answer»

I have an ASUS X75A laptop, with built-in sound card (a proprietary VIA model that ASUS uses; it shows up as a "dev8446"). It came with WIN8 pre-installed and I applied the free upgrade to Win 8.1. Everything worked fine for a while, then one day the volume indicator in the task bar had a big red X over it, and claimed I had no audio devices installed.

The Windows sound troubleshooter can't FIGURE out the problem -- i.e. the proper Services START up and are running.
The device drivers are all up to date and none of them show a problem.
The Sound panel in Control Panel is checked off to show disabled/disconnected devices. Says there are no input or output devices present.
The sound card is not turned off in the BIOS, in fact there is no place in the BIOS to do that.

I don't have any malware.
Nothing else in Windows is behaving oddly.
I don't recall installing anything interesting (or anything at all, actually) right before it happened, except for a MS automatic update.
I tried a restore point when it first happened, and that didn't help. The relevant ones have long since been overwritten.

Now here's the interesting part:

I got a cheap USB external sound card, and the same THING happens -- it's recognized, the drivers load, and it doesn't show up as an audio device in the Sound panel. Since I would rather get a root canal than have to reinstall Windows and all my software (I despise Win 8 and do not use Metro apps -- I've tweaked it so the Desktop loads automatically and I can use it like Win 7 or XP -- this means I have to reinstall everything if I do a repair installation from the recovery partition), I tried connecting a Bluetooth headset. No dice. The headset is recognized properly as a Bluetooth device; the properties indicate the system knows it's a headset -- and it does not show up as an audio device, so I still have no sound! I even tried to reroute the sound to my iPhone (there's software for that) and that doesn't work EITHER. The connection is established, but it's not recognized as being an audio output, so it doesn't play sound.

I repaired computers professionally for almost 20 years, and have never seen this problem.
Can you think of anything else I can try doing besides reinstalling Windows?I would try re-installing the sound drivers from the laptop manuf. Driver CD that shipped with the PC.Have you tried doing a system file check? sfc /scannowQuote

this means I have to reinstall everything if I do a repair installation from the recovery partition
A repair will not affect any of your important data or programs. Patio's advice about re-installing the drivers may fix it.Quote from: strollin on March 21, 2014, 07:47:03 AM
Have you tried doing a system file check? sfc /scannow

I tried that (knew there was something else I had done that also didn't work -- that was it).

Quote from: SuperDave on March 21, 2014, 12:38:57 PM
A repair will not affect any of your important data or programs. Patio's advice about re-installing the drivers may fix it.

I will try rolling back the driver to what ASUS originally had installed, and if that doesn't work, try the Windows repair.

Thanks!

| |

Solve : Screenshots? |
Answer»

Hi all...

I'm new here and not sure if I'm posting this in the right place, but I really need help with sorting this out because its driving me crazy!!

I am using Windows 8 and every time I take a Screenshot, I cannot find where it was saved.

Screenshots are supposed to be saved in a 'Screenshots' folder in pictures, for some reason I was missing that file, so I opened a new folder and named it Screenshots, but still, they are not saving there.

I have tried restore points to no avail, how do I restore screenshots saving back to the where they were originally supposed to be saved to, without putting my pc back to factory settings??

All help appreciated in advance...once again, apologies if this is in the wrong section.

Thanks...

Steve.when you take the next screen shot save it with a name you'll remember then do a search for that file. Thanks Allan...

The problem is in Windows 8, it doesn't ask you to name a screenshot or even where to save it to, it is an automatic process.

When you press the Window key and Print Screen together, the screen just dims and brightens and that's it, the screenshot is taken and supposed to be saved in the screenshot file in pictures automatically.

What I really need to know in the simplest dumb-*censored* way, is how to change whatever has altered, to ensure they get automatically saved in the screenshots folder where they should be.

Thanks again though for your input.

Steve.I was not aware of this feature - using Windows key + Prt Sc - but I just tried it and it worked just as you described. A folder named Screenshots is now in My Pictures and my first capture using this technique is there. Unfortunately, I do not know why it is not working for you.

Are you familiar with other ways of doing a screen capture? Pressing the prt sc key will capture the whole screen and place it in the clipboard. Then, you need to paste it into Paint or some other program that accepts image files and save it with a filename. Pressing Alt/prt sc captures only the active window. And, Windows 7 and 8 have the Snipping Tool which is quite handy for doing screen captures. Agree with Soybean...the Tool is in Programs/Accessories.Thank-you very much for your input guys.

Despite Microsoft's (MS) claim about ease of use, I seem to find Windows 8 rather difficult to navigate, as I did Vista.

I have as yet been unable to find anyway to contact MS to ask them about my problem and if they have a solution.

However, I tried the snipping tool and that works sufficiently for now...I will not give up on MS however, who I THINK have intentionally made it difficult to ask for help.

Thanks again for your input guys....much appreciated.

Steve. Hi guys...

Finally perseverance and dogged determination pays off and I have found the solution to my screenshots problem, the issue was a change in the registry and the wrong value number.

If you encounter the same problem, click the link below and follow the instructions, I guarantee it does work:

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/windows-8-not-saving-captured-screenshots

stevo77How did the Registry get changed ? ?Quote from: stevo77 on March 11, 2014, 08:06:43 PM

Glad you found the solution. But, honestly, I don't see much value in the feature. You can only use the technique for a full screen capture and it does not allow you to save the image under a unique name when you capture the image. The images captured this way are simply named Screenshot (1), Screenshot (2), and so forth. So, if want to give the image files a name that has meaning, you need to change the name after the image has been captured to the Screenshots folder. And, if you do that, you've really saved no time using this screen capture METHOD, as opposed to using the more flexible Snipping Tool. And, if you do that, you've really saved no time using this screen capture method, as opposed to using the more flexible Snipping Tool.

Contrariwise, I find this feature (which I actually did not know existed until this thread) to be far better than the alternatives. In general, I find the Snipping tool to be the worst alternative of the three. Print-Screen+Paint/Photoshop/Image Program, where you press print screen, which puts the screen image on the clipboard and then paste and save that image in an image editor. The main problem with this approach is that it's a pain to use this for screenshotting a series of steps, either for showing reproduction steps of a problem or for documenting a series of steps. It has a huge advantage over the snipping tool, since it can capture menus and other popups that would close if any other window get's the focus. I thought the Snipping Tool would be a useful replacement for that method when Win7 was released but after using it once or twice I've never used it again. It basically only removes the paste step, and you still need to save the snipped image, which includes giving it a name. It's also not possible to use the Snipping tool to capture Menus, drop-downs, or similar pop-ups, which IMO Is a pretty SERIOUS limitation.

3. The new Windows Key+Print Screen

IMO this is the best alternative, at least for me. The main thing I do for screenshots is for documenting a series of dialogs, usually when following a set of steps. And the LAST thing I want to do is screw around coming up with a name for them in the middle of doing so. I find that I have to constantly remember what exactly I was doing and what the next step was. With the new combo we finally get the functionality that Mac OS classic had in 1984 with Command+P, and IMO it's taken too damned long for Microsoft to come up with a non-retarded way of creating screenshots that doesn't remove your attention from what you are doing and require you to actually do extra work to name the screenshot, instead saving it as an image that you can deal with later the process you are documenting. Using thumbnails in the screenshots folder or sorting by date after taking a series of screenshots makes finding the series just created trivial, then I can move them to a more appropriate folder for further handling or zipping/attaching etc. There is also the case where I am testing a piece of software and want to take a quick capture of some error dialogs or problems I've found and having to either print-screen, paste, and save as for every screenshot or having to snip and choose a filename is an absolute pain in the *censored*. I Much prefer to be able to capture as many screenshots documenting something as possible, then I can go through the captured images to decide which ones are the most useful to document the issue- same story when trying to document a problem or series of proper steps. The older method makes it far more likely for me to simply document it using text which usually results in some back and forth and I have to take a screenshot anyway.

Even in the general case, When taking screenshots I Much prefer the method of least intrusion such that it simply saves the screenshot and I can deal with it later, since that encourages taking more screenshots rather than less, because I don't have to break from my current process simply to give the new file a name.

Anyway, I did some experiments with this new feature. When I deleted the registry key in question, it recreated it when I took another screenshot and the screenshot was saved properly.

I then edited it to a large value. (1280). When I took a screenshot the new image appeared with the new number and the registry value was incremented.

So I changed the value to a low value (I had several screenshots at this point, 1,2,3,4, and 1280) I changed it to 2. the new screenshot was saved as 5 after I set the index to 2.

I actually wasn't able to break it, for whatever reason. I also do not have the {B7BEDE81-DF94-4682-A7D8-57A52620B86F} key in my User Shell Folders at all.
The only difference I Can imagine is that I am using Windows 8.1, not Windows 8.

I launched my Windows 8 VM. Looking in the registry, I Found the ScreenshotIndex key missing. Therefore, according to the article, my screenshotting feature would be broken. However, when I pressed Windows Key+Print Screen, the registry key appeared and a screenshot was saved properly. A screenshots folder was created in my Pictures folder which contained the screenshot. I changed the registry key to 512 and took a screenshot, and the new file was saved to the right location with (512). I changed it to 1 again, and when I took a new screenie it saved as (3) and the registry value was incremented to 4.

Looking in the User Shell Folders key and there is no key that the article mentions.

Therefore it would seem that a lot of what the article states is actually wrong. I would guess that adding the user shell folder key creates a Screenshots 'known folder' which overrides the default location that would be in My Pictures. This would fix the problem if there is an issue saving to My Pictures or if the My Pictures setting is not valid. (confirmed by changing My Pictures User Shell Folder to gibberish- screenshots no longer saved but the screen dimmed- when I added the specified key it saved again to the folder I specified.).

Looking further into it, it looks like User Shell Folders supports "Known Folders". In this case, these are documented here. The guid used in the article is for the screenshots Known folder. If not present/overridden by adding an item here than the default setting is "%USERPROFILE%\Pictures\Screenshots". Note that this folder might not correspond to the My Pictures folder if the My Pictures folder has been set to another folder, which means it won't appear in the "My Pictures" folder in ones documents. (eg. if I change my Pictures folder to be in say D:\Pictures than saving screenshots will still put them in %USERPROFILE%\Pictures\Screenshots and not in D:\Pictures\Screenshots even though opening the "My Pictures" folder in Explorer will open D:\Pictures.

| |

Solve : icons not responding? |
Answer»

I did read three pages but found nothing much for my q so I'll ask it in a new post.

In Win 8-I just got the computer-HP Pavillion Slimline, 6 G ram, AMD quad core processor @ 1.5 GHz-the little icons at the BOTTOM of the screen do nothing when I click on them(usually), nothing except open a small screen shot which then reverts back to the original ICON.

I don't KNOW if something is wrong or if it's meant to be that way and I just don't know how to use Win 8. I've read and watched the vids on using Win 8 a few times but I was relieved to find nothing in the original box like a 200 page user manual.

But on the icons if I restart the machine then they work as a previous Windows version user would expect them to work. They actually open the thing they refer to.

And another thing of beauty happens when I restart. What I see is like Windows 7 or Vista with icons along the side that really work, an address bar at the top and the time and date showing at the bottom. After fooling around for a while looking for files or on the web the Win 7 screen is gone somewhere and it's back to icons that do nothing much.

It looks like there are two choices of home screens, the Win 7 or the new, is that what they mean by Metro? I've had touch screen devices for years and now I have an iPad which I'm learning to use and I love it but Win 8, I don't know.

I've come across a dnload called Classic Shell but I'd rather learn Win 8 unless it's disfunctional. Things like Classic Shell sound like an invitation to more confusion. Someone said once you learn 8 it it's pretty nice.

Oh and I did find how to change my homepage to Yahoo whick I'm used to but that too goes away and it's back to MSN homepage with no address bar or back button etc. But again if I reboot then things are much better. And one more thing-I can't even use Yahoo MAIL when in that Metro mode because if the page isn't totally locked up it's so slow as to make it useless. Yahoo mail is normal on my other internet devices/computers. I greatly appreciate any advice. Solve : Multiple OS installers in single bootable External HDD? |
Answer»

Hi guys,

I would like to ASK if it is possible to load multiple windows OS installers on a external HDD? I have searched a lot of sites but it doesn't give me what I want. Can you guys help me with this?

Regards,
Khraieyscael Could you describe the reason for needing to use this?
Hi Salmon,

I bought an external HDD and I want to use it to be my one-stop shop OS installation disk on different types of OS. I will create 2 partitions on external HDD, the first one will be the OS installers (bootable) and the other will be my personal data. I want to use that method to get rid of my DVDs and to use single drive instead using flash drive and reformat it every time I will perform OS installation. Is there any WAY to do bootable external HDD with multiple windows installer images? thanks guys.

KhraiyscaelI don't know how you can use your existing hdd to hold many bootable installers. However, a company CALLED Zalman makes a line of external hdd cases that have the ability to emulate an optical drive. I have one of these and have dozens of ISO images on it. I can select any of the ISOs stored on the disk and can boot from the selected ISO. Plugs into a USB port and appears to the system as an external optical drive. WORKS with Windows, Mac and Linux ISOs.

See here: http://www.zalman.com/global/product/Product_Read.php?Idx=750

I currently have the ZM-VE200 and just ordered the ZM-VE400.

You can boot from ISOs mounted on a USB flash drive or HDD using a tool called grub4DOS

http://www.themudcrab.com/acronis_grub4dos.php

Looks like Grub4DOS would work but would take some time to setup and I believe it would require you to modify things each time you added a new ISO.

With the Zalman, there is no setup, copy the ISO to the drive and it's ready to use. Quote from: strollin on February 24, 2014, 06:23:47 AM

Looks like Grub4DOS would work but would take some time to setup and I believe it would require you to modify things each time you added a new ISO.

A small amount of time to set up, and a simple edit to the menu.lst file when a new ISO is added, but to set against those things, it's free and you can use any pen drive or USB hdd you have lying around. I do agree the Zalman product looks very useful. I found some Amazon reviews that make interesting reading.

Since jhay_e03 already has a drive that he wants to use, Grub4DOS is probably the better solution. I do love my Zalman though, I can carry a whole arm load of installer disks around in a 2.5" external drive.thanks Salmon and Strollin,

I will try your suggestions and hopefully it will work on NTFS type of Volume. My another concern is if Grub4DOS and Zalman can support NTFS file type because I've tried Xboot but it doesn't support NTFS. anyways, please give me time to try those suggested apps and I will keep you posted. thanks guys, really appreciate it.

Regards,
KhraieyscaelQuote from: jhay_e03 on February 24, 2014, 05:56:20 PM
My another concern is if Grub4DOS and Zalman can support NTFS file type

Grub4dos supports booting an ISO on a volume holding an NTFS file system, but bear this in mind: I believe the OS inside the ISO needs to support NTFS natively so Windows disk images will be OK but you may have a problem with some Linux ISOs.

My Zalman is formatted with the NTFS file system and doesn't care what file system the OS within the ISO supports. As mentioned earlier, the Zalman appears to the hardware as an external optical drive with the selected ISO image mounted as if it was a CD/DVD in the drive. As long as the machine it's plugged into supports the ability to boot from an external USB device it works.Quote from: strollin on February 25, 2014, 11:28:19 AM
My Zalman is formatted with the NTFS file system and doesn't care what file system the OS within the ISO supports.

Neither does grub4DOS; however an OS booted off the ISO may, or may not be able to 'see' the volume CONTAINING the ISO, depending on whether that booted OS can read the file system installed on that volume.

| |

Do you mean Windows 8.1 or later? I don't believe any developer preview will function normal since Windows 8 was officially released over a year ago.

Unfortunately, I believe you will need to reinstall Windows 8 to get out of the conundrum you now have. And then, you will need to take a different approach to Windows XP. If you have two hard drives, you could INSTALL Windows XP by unplugging your Win8 HDD until you're done installing XP. After that, you can use your motherboard's boot menu (often called by pressing F11 during POSTing) to choose which HDD to boot from. Alternatively, you could install Windows XP as a virtual machine running under Windows 8, by using virtual machine software such as VMware Player or virtualbox and then installing Windows XP as virtual machine. soybean is right.
If you want to move on, forget Windows XP.

Now here is some information you may want to know. For those people who have to have XP on a machine that has Window 7 or 8 and just one hard drive there is a way that works.
XP must be installed first. Ignore people who tell you other wise. Just do it that way until you understand what is going on with he Windows boot thing. Later, ypou can make your one exception rules.

After installing both Windows XP and the next Windows OS, either 7 or 8, you must make a image backup of the partitions.

If the Windows XP install goes bad, you have to use the partition recovery to recover just the XP partition only without CHANGING the boot information. I stress this only because at least one tool I know about wants to put the boot information back to the standard XP boot method. That would destroy the Windows 7 or 8 boot information. And no, you can not fix it with boot.ini options.

The better alternative is to have two serrate, physical boot devices.

Here is a phrase for a search on either Bing, Google or Yahoo.
boot XP from a flash drive
I have my computer set up with dual boot XP and Win8. Here's some information about how to do that.

| |

I disabled the two finger gestures and it WORKS okay, but I'm realizing how much I took the scrolling for granted. Side bars are really annoying guys If anybody knows how to fix that I'd really appreciate it.
I'm running a Windows 8.1 64 bit OS from DELL with some kinda synaptics driver dealy-o for my mouse. I'm not sure what kinda sound card or sound drivers I have but if you guys needa know what they're all about, I can probably get those.
Thank you for reading, any help is appreciated.

| |

Solve : Lost administration rights? |
Answer»

Hi, people.

I got a new HP a few weeks ago (brand new). It's running windows 8.

My PROBLEM is that I lost my admin rights very quickly, despite only having 1 single account. I created an admin account (so I had 2) and that account could download and install everything. My first and only admin account kept giving me the message when trying to install programs: windows could not access the specified device path or file.

Today, I tried deleting AVG and for some reason (after reboot) it worked! I could install/download everything.
Then I decided to download AVG again to keep my computer safe, and after the installment I got that annoying message again when trying to install a program (like Chrome).

So I once again deleted AVG and rebooted, but now it still doesn't work. I can give myself admin rights by right clicking it and going to permissions, but I need to do that with basically everything - and it actually also keeps me from running certain java applets.

What do I do? I formatted my computer 2 days ago and I've only download simple programs like java and such.. and AVG anti virus. BumpPlease don't bump threads less than 24 hours old. Solve : Multi-booting XP and Windows 8 help? |
Answer»

Hi folks. Recently finished by first PC build and works GREAT, however I'm having quite some trouble installing Windows 8 on another partition. I've successfully installed XP which is working great, but Windows 8 refuses to install on another partition, coming up with a pop up saying it cannot install here as there is already a MBR Partition table there, and that it needs a GPT disc.

Now, I've tried installing it by wiping XP completley, leving all the HDD space for W8, and installs a bit better, I can reach its start screen. But I was hoping to have them both on the same HDD.

Is there a way to get around this at all? I have heard of partitioning software, perhaps that may do the trick.

Thanks for reading. I do it. You must use perforate partitions.
Here is a layout I have used. You NEED at least 160GB drive to be piratical.

10 GB unused . 50 GB primary 50 GB primary

The remainder of the disc is an extended partition with one or more logical drives.
I first install Windows XP on a primary partition, but not the unused space.

Next I install l Windows 7 or 8 on other large partition.

That should work for you.

What do you mean by perforate partitioning?

I should probably say that my Windows 8 is an OEM version and is 64 bit. My XP CD is Service Pack 3 32bit, and my HDD is 1TB. What the *censored* is a perforate partition??Sorry
I meant to say distinct basic primary partitions. Not dynamic partitions. The simple partitions must divide the disc physically.
You can use a free partition manager to do this.
Unfortunately, some of these have a steep learning curve. Make a bad choice and you loose what your have. But you should be able to use the disk management tools in Windows 7 or 8 to "shrink" a partition. Used correctly, you don't loose programs or data.

Again, I recommended two e primary partitions and the rest can be logical in the extended. If possible, leave some free space at the start of the disc. But that may not be needed.

I hope I can help you.
Quote from: Geek-9pm on FEBRUARY 15, 2014, 08:54:11 PM

Here is a layout I have used. But this is not to scold you at all by any means. I welcome anyone who wants to help others here as well as those in need for help.

Some comments you may see however are like "Here we go again" with people who ask for help but you can swear they are going out of their way to post for assistance and intentionally leaving out specific details so that what can be solved in 1 response is dragged out to 18 responses for additional info as they play games to hook you in to make you chase your tail trying to come to a solution for them in which they may not even really have this problem, and they plainly are getting kicks out of making you scratch your head and leading you on further etc. We have had people here act this way and no names mentioned, but all of us here who have been here for years know of the past problems with reoccuring intentional time wasters. Sometimes they get banned and other times we see their posts and ignore them after making taking a quick peek to see if after crying wolf for so long that maybe they actually have a real problem this time and their post / trap that is waiting to hook someone sits at 0 responses until someone gets lured in and taken down the path of frustration when there is likely never to be a solution to the posted question to that is EXTREMELY lacking in specifics. And even when posting a list of questions with every specific detail required to post a final post that has a solution to their problem, they dodge this because it goes against the game that they are playing!

Fortunately their are only a couple of individuals that I have had to just ignore and the good majority of people are posting real problems and looking for real help vs trying to catch someone into their trap and waste time of everyone who gets hooked into the trap.

Glad to have you with us, and I hope to see you helping others here if you are familiar on a subject matter that has beneficial info to share to all readers.
Thanks for the informative reply and welcome. I think this topic should be closed now, to many replies with nothing to do with the question.

| |

About 45% of the interfacing is the same... It's really just some of the Metro menu stuff and a few of the settings that are awkward at first... But yeah... once you're used to it it's pretty nice.

That said, you can use ClassicShell as recommended, however I'm personally not really into off-brand stuff that modifies the OS... personally.

If you really want to revert to Win 7, you'd have to do it as Allan said... but you would need an OS disk and a key.

| |
